24+ Advanced Learning Loans have been introduced to help you cover the course fees for full and part-time courses and training at Level 3 and 4 e.g. A levels, Access to Higher Education courses and Level 3 and 4, Certificates and Diplomas.

How much will the loans be for? For all eligible courses the loan will be up to 100% of the cost of the training, including course and material fees. This could be anywhere between £300 and £4,000 depending on the individual and course.

Who are the loans for? You can apply for a loan if:

Do I need to apply for a loan for each year I am studying? No. You will have one loan to cover the whole length of your course - you don’t have to reapply each year. ‘One course - one loan.’

• You are aged 24 and above at the start of your course • You are studying at Level 3 and Level 4 in further education and training • You are resident in the UK for the last three years • You have not previously had a loan to do the same type and level of qualification. The loan is available irrespective of your current employment status and the loan will not be means tested or subject to any credit checks. When applying for a Level 3 or 4 course you will have the option to: a) Pay the course fees yourself b) Have an employer/sponsor pay the course fees on your behalf c) Apply for an Advanced Learning Loan to help pay for the course fees. How will the loan work? They work in a similar way to the current Higher Education student loans system and you can apply for it through the Student Loans Company. The payment for the course fees will then be made from the Student Loans Company directly to the College. How do I apply for a 24+ Advanced Learning Loan? Step 1: Apply for your chosen course direct to Stephenson College. Step 2: If your application is successful, please request a 24+ Learning and Funding letter which includes details of how to apply. Step 3: You will need to complete an online application form.

What will I have to repay and when? There are no repayments until after the course is completed and you are earning £21,000 or more. Repayments will start from the April after you have completed or left the course. Repayments will be automatically deducted from your earnings through the tax system. There will be fixed repayments of 9% of your salary above the £21,000 threshold, irrespective of the loan balance. Any outstanding loan balance will be written off after 30 years. Therefore if you earn £25,000 a year your loan repayments will equate to around £360 a year or £30 a month. These repayments will be linked to earnings rather than loan amount, so regardless of how much you owe, the payments will be the same. What support is available for me if I’m studying an Access to Higher Education course? If you take out a loan to pay the course fees for an Access to Higher Education course, on completion of your Access course and Degree, the Student Loans Company will write off the amount outstanding on your loan for your Access course. How do I find out more? Contact Student Services on 01530 836136 ext 220 or email services@stephensoncoll.ac.uk Alternatively visit the National Careers Service at www.nationalcareersservice.direct.gov.uk or www.gov.uk/advanced-learning-loans/overview

APPRENTICESHIPS

TRAINEESHIPS

How do I become an Apprentice? You must be 16 or over, living in England and not in full-time education. There are also flexible entry requirements as Apprenticeships are not just focused on academic achievement but are much more practical based. If you are not employed we will match your details against any vacancies we have on file while you also apply for jobs.

What is a Traineeship? Traineeships are unpaid training programmes that allow you to enrol on a course and get work experience without affecting any benefit you may be claiming. Stephenson College will meet all transport costs to college and employers will provide all travel costs to your place of work and food and drink.

Why become an Apprentice? You will be working in a sector you enjoy while also getting paid, receiving a minimum of £3.30 per hour.

What does a Traineeship involve? • Work preparation training at college to prepare you for your working environment and improve your confidence. This will include developing your CV and interview skills.

With this great foundation to build on you will have a wide range of options available to you in the future.

• Specific development of your English, Maths and IT skills tailored to the needs

We have Apprenticeships available at both Coalville and Nottingham Campuses. These include: accounting, beauty, brickwork, construction (contract operations), engineering, fitted interiors, motor vehicle, animal care, brickwork, business & administration, carpentry & joinery, child care, customer service, electrical installation, hairdressing, health & social care, horse care, IT Users, maintenance operations, management, painting & decorating, plumbing, property services (letting of residential), property services (sale of residential), teaching assistants, team leading and warehousing & storage.

• Health and Safety training specific to the company/sector you will be working in.

We work with large organisations including Vinci, BAM Nuttall and Interserve on Advanced Apprenticeships level 3 in construction and the built environment. We also work with employers in the motor vehicle industry such as VOLVO and Renault in advanced HGV. Block and day release programmes are available. WHAT’S NEXT? Checkout the vacancies on our website www.stephensoncoll.ac.uk or call the Apprenticeship Helpline on (01530) 519 001. Alternatively visit www.apprenticeships.gov.uk

of the company you will be working in.

• A 10 week, high quality work placement offering you a great insight into the company’s operations. You will also undertake the company’s induction programme and get your own personal work buddy/mentor. At the end of the work experience placement you will get an interview with the company, if vacancies are available. In addition you will receive a reference, a certificate of achievement and an exit interview. What are the benefits of a Traineeship? Taking part in a Traineeship will put you in a better position to compete for an Apprenticeship or other jobs, as you will gain genuine employability skills and actual work experience to add to your CV. Is a Traineeship the right opportunity for me? If you are motivated to work and ready to start a career, yet restricted by a lack of skills and experience, this is exactly the opportunity you need. You may be eligible if you: • Are aged 18 to 23 • Do not have a Level 2 qualification (equivalent to 5 GCSEs) • Are unemployed or working less than 16 hours a week 19
