Uniquely located on the campus of Iowa State University, our facility is a stunning combination of the visual and performing arts. With outstanding acoustics, the 2,700-seat, state-of-the-art concert hall is often applauded by the artists who grace our stage, as well as our audiences who enthusiastically return year after year to experience the entertainment provided only by live professional theater.

Helpful Hints for Your Experience In Case of an Emergency Doctors, parents or guests expecting phone calls are advised to leave their seat location (located on ticket) with the appropriate parties and with the Guest Services Desk, which is located in the main floor lobby.

The emergency telephone number during performances is 515-294-2313.

Smoking Smoking is prohibited in Stephens Auditorium and on the surrounding grounds.

Finding Your Seat / Late Seating Seating begins 30 minutes prior to curtain time. Late seating is subject to the discretion of the staff and according to the artist’s contract.

Refreshments Food and drink is generally allowed in the auditorium with the exception of symphonic performances.

Cell Phones and Electronic Devices Audio or visual recording devices and all photography are prohibited during performances. Please turn off all cell phones, beepers, video games and other electronic devices prior to the performance. All electronic devices are to be disabled during the performance.

Accessibility Features Wheelchair seating and special seating for the hearing and visually impaired is available.

Parking Stephens Auditorium has convenient parking in lots adjacent to the building. Lots A-1 and B-3 are reserved for Performing Arts Fund Donors who contribute $300 or more. Parking for mobility-impaired guests is available in Lot F located west of Stephens Auditorium.

Medical Assistance If you have a medical need, please notify an usher. Medical services are provided by Mary Greeley Medical Center.

Headphones with infrared listening devices are available for use at no charge at the Guest Services Desk.

American Sign Language interpretation may be arranged at least one month in advance of performances.

Pre-Show Dinners: We offer a pre-show meal prior to five shows in this year’s season: Once, Under the Streetlamp, Close to You! Music of the Carpenters, Chicago and National Symphony of Ukraine. Educational Experiences for Youth Youth Matinee Series Parents and educators know that helping a student develop creativity and imagination is one of the most important things they can do.

Helping to complete the education formula, our Youth Matinee Series energizes, engages and enhances the overall learning process for students through the magic and wonder of live performing arts produced by professional touring artists.These performances enrich students’ lives and illustrate the dynamic relationship between literature, social studies, history, science, math, world cultures and the performing arts. The Youth Matinee Series is underwritten by the Martha-Ellen Tye Performing Arts Institute endowment.

Martha-Ellen Tye Performing Arts Institute The Martha-Ellen Tye Performing Arts Institute was established through a generous endowment by long-time Marshalltown resident, the late Martha-Ellen Tye. It brings a unique blend of arts experiences to students of all ages through matinee performances, teaching activities in schools, demonstrations and workshops. Now in its 16th year, the program has served more than 200,000 students in grades PreK-12 from across the state of Iowa.

Mrs. Tye believed strongly in the power and importance of arts education and vigorously supported programs that develop the “whole person — body, mind and spirit.” The Youth Matinee Series is underwritten by this endowment, which allows us to keep the price at $4.

The Stephens Street Team The Stephens Street Team unites the Iowa State Center and ISU by celebrating the importance of the arts in our lives. Its mission is to promote the arts to ISU students through unique marketing efforts and special events. The Stephens Street Team will plan events and lead marketing activities and develop creative ways to reach out to the student body at ISU about the incredible, affordable and accessible activities at the Iowa State Center.

Activities may include planning on-campus promotional activities or philanthropic events that relate to shows, assisting with performance day activities, sidewalk chalking, flyer distribution, presentations to campus organizations about our Performing Arts Series and more!

Standing OVATION 2016–2017 SEASON

Semi-Toned is the University of Exeter’s infamous all male singing sensation. The group has been at the forefront of British a cappella for several years: winners of the Voice Festival UK, the Edinburgh Fringe Bobby award and now the champions of BBC2’s show The Choir: Gareth’s Best in Britain. Semi-Toned also made the front page of Buzzfeed in 2015 with their debut music video ‘Rich Man’.

This will be their third tour of the USA. Reviews from last year’s tour, Game of Tones, hailed them as an “international success” (The Viking News, Valhalla). Praised for their creativity, uniqueness and vocal acrobatics the group embraces music of a variety of genres to ensure there really is something for everyone in any of their shows.

In Semi-Toned presents: Sing Theory the group’s 12-strong ensemble take the audience on a thrilling journey from the 70’s through to the present day, all via the medium of music – and completely unaccompanied. The show promises to give audiences more of what they love; the same humour, innovation and musicality that is synonymous with the boys in burgundy. And if that wasn’t compelling enough, the group is also renowned for its dancing ability: watch as they shuffle in Lindy Hop, drop to Beyoncé and do the Macarena. The show contains a little something for everyone, with landmark songs of the recent decades including Toy Story, Stevie Wonder and Kanye West…

SEMI-TONED BIOS

Rob Akerele-Miles Studying: Law, 2nd Year Voice Part: Bass 1 A seasoned vocalist, Robert has been singing for as long as he can remember. He hopes to pursue a career in Opera once his time at university is over. For the time being, however, Robert spends most of his time reading, rarely found without a book in hand. He also plays touch rugby on the weekends, proving that some of Semi-Toned can indeed do sports. As well as rugby, Rob enjoys a spot of tennis on the courts from time to time.

Ted Bartram Studying: English and Drama, 3rd Year Voice Part: Tenor 2 Ted has always loved to perform. As a boy he would often dress in imaginative and bizarre costumes for the amusement of his friends and family. This passion for theatricality eventually led him to join a local musical theatre company.

He went on to star in Guys and Dolls and Les Miserables, among others. Having had very little exposure to a cappella music before coming to Exeter, Semi-Toned has become the defining aspect of Ted’s university experience. He is currently applying to drama schools to pursue his greatest ambition of becoming an actor.

Alfie Davies Studying: English, 1st Year Voice Part: Tenor 2 From the humble hamlet of Guildford, singing has been Alfie’s hobby since he first performed James Blunt in a school assembly at age eight. With a background in musical theatre and barbershop, Alfie was delighted to have stumbled upon Exeter’s boys in burgundy, taken with the group’s lively atmosphere and varied arrangements. When he’s not singing, Alfie listens to Bon Iver, watches Wes Anderson films, and struggles to cook anything that surpasses the complexity of a stir fry.

Henry Edwards Studying: English & Drama, 2nd Year Voice Part: Bass 2 As an Old Etonian who grew up in the rolling countryside of Warwickshire, Henry fulfils the quintessential English stereotype. His masculine bass sound is oddly juxtaposed by his somewhat cheeky and theatrical personality.

Henry is this year’s Tour Manager, making him the chief organiser for the group’s USA tour and Edinburgh Fringe show. Having recently passed the selection course, he now also has a promising career as a Warfare Officer in the Royal Navy ahead of him. In his little spare time, Henry enjoys directing theatre.

Ludo Graham Studying: Modern Languages, 1st Year Voice Part: Baritone Ludo was recruited into the group by old schoolmate Henry and decided to leave his choral roots for the exciting new prospect of a cappella. He also has a natural skill to never be quiet; he can always be heard singing. He juggles Semi-Toned rehearsals with his acting pursuits and can often be spotted around campus in a wide variety of garish items of clothing.

Sam Harper Studying: Drama, 3rd Year Voice Part: Tenor 1/Vocal Percussion Born to a lowly farm hand, Sam has sacrificed almost nothing to pursue his passion of singing. When he is not singing or playing the guitar, you can find him surfing or playing rugby. Fostering a penchant for the limelight from a young age there is really nothing he loves more than performing. The powerhouse of the group, Sam’s soaring tenor notes can often be heard clearest among Semi-Toned’s vocals.

Greg Munday Studying: Physics, 1st Year Voice Part: Tenor 2 Coming from the far off place of Ireland, Greg began singing in chapel and chamber choirs. Despite this classical training, a cappella lured him in. He has quickly adapted to the Semi-Toned performance style and is loving the new velvet jacket. Greg can usually be found surfing or stressing over unnecessary first year physics exams. He also champions being the only member of Semi-Toned able to grow a full beard.

Duncan Payne Studying: Biological Sciences, 3rd Year Voice Part: Tenor 1/Vocal Percussion Easy to spot as the only blonde member of the group, you will either see him belting out high tenor parts or making strange drum noises with his mouth. As this year’s Musical Director, Duncan is always pushing the group on, delving into previously unexplored musical genres and continuing the incredible progress Semi-Toned has made over the last few years.

Sylvan Rackham Studying: Engineering, 3rd Year Voice Part: Baritone Sylvan’s relationship with music has taken many forms starting with suzuki violin at age three; singing started to take precedence when he became a Cathedral Chorister in his home town of Durham. At university, he sought a musical outlet and stumbled upon a humble group of singing men in burgundy who offered him a place in their travelling band.

Over the last two years he learned the tricks of the trade and is now this year’s president.

Much like Donald Trump, this was mainly due to his $60 million campaign budget.

Charlie Rockall Studying: Engineering, 2nd year Voice Part: Tenor 2/ Baritone Hailing from Surrey, Charlie started his musical career very young, playing through a variety of instruments before landing on singing as his tool of choice. Joining Semi-Toned in September 2016, he has quickly grown accustomed to the style of the group and can proudly say he has made some amazing new friends along the way. Musical inspirations include Kendrick Lamar, Radiohead, and David Bowie.

Jacob Storey Studying: Mathematics, 1st year Voice part: Tenor 1 Jacob came from Grantham in Lincolnshire to study at Exeter, and found to his delight that he could continue singing a cappella as he had in his home town. Having learned to play the piano from age 12, Jacob found he could also sing a bit, too, so decided to pursue this as well. His musical interests range from jazz and blues to the likes of Coldplay and James Blunt.

Ed Jillings Studying: Classics, 4th year Voice part: Tenor 1/Vocal Percussion Born and raised in the idyllic Kingston-Upon-Thames, Ed spent his formative years as an angelic choirboy.

However, since joining Semi-Toned way back in 2011, Ed has been led astray by exposure to disco and funk, and even had to retake a year after spending a whole semester sitting in his room and listening to James Brown. Ed is the oldest and therefore wisest member of the group, with six years experience to boast of. We are beginning to wonder if he will ever leave the group…

ACT ONE Tom Joad is paroled after four years in jail. He meets Jim Casy, a former reverend familiar with the Joads, and together they learn the rest of the Joad family is planning to move west for work. Tom reunites with his family as they’re departing, despite Tom’s parole restrictions.

Shortly into the journey, Grandpa dies from a stroke and Rose of Sharon frets over her unborn child while Ma tries to remain optimistic. Later, at a roadside camp, a worker returning from California tells the Joads that livable wages don’t exist in California, and that he’s going back to the Dust Bowl. Ma worries about keeping the family together.

Once they reach Colorado, Noah leaves the family to make his own life, which devastates Ma and Pa. As the Joads cross the desert, agricultural officers try to inspect their truck, but Ma panics and persuades them away. The next morning, the family arrives in California, and Ma reveals that Granma died before the inspection. The Joads continue on to bury Granma.

ACT TWO The family arrives at a temporary “Hooverville” camp full of laborers looking for scarce and underpaid work. Tom suggests protesting, but another laborer, Floyd, warns him that the police jail labor organizers. Meanwhile, Connie and Rose of Sharon fight about the poor living conditions. A contractor arrives looking for laborers, and when Floyd argues, a sheriff arrives. They fight, and Tom punches the police, but Casy accepts blame so Tom won’t return to jail. The police threaten to burn down the camp, so the Joads leave without Casy or Connie, who has run away.

Some time passes, and the Joads arrive at Hooper Ranch for work. Tom sees a picket line where he reunites with Casy, who went to jail and learned the power of organizing for positive change. Casy tells Tom that the Hooper Ranch wages won’t last. The picket line gets busted and Casy is killed in the fight. Tom, enraged, fights Casy’s killer, and returns to his family with a broken nose. Ma tells Tom to run away. Tom is inspired to continue organizing, and leaves.

More time passes, and the Joads live in a boxcar by the river. Al announces his pending wedding to the girl next door, and Ma fears losing another family member. A storm begins, and Rose of Sharon goes into labor while the river rises and the men try to build a dam. Rose of Sharon’s baby is stillborn and sent down the river. The family walks to an abandoned barn on higher ground where they meet a child and her sick father. Needing nutrition to survive, Rose of Sharon nurses him from her own milk.
