Introduction “The Tourism Management programme has built up a special reputation in the tourism industry. Employers appreciate the good balance between academic knowledge and practical skills. They not only notice this balance in the attitude and self-confidence of students graduating from Stenden, but also in their job performing skills.” “We are proud that our programme was accredited by the International Centre of Excellence (THE-ICE) as the top in the Netherlands and as the second-ranked educational institute in Europe. THE-ICE is an independent accreditation organisation specialised in tourism, hospitality, culinary arts and educational events. We also have the quality mark Sustainable Higher Education, with care for the community in the destination areas and the effects of tourism on culture and the environment as key areas. Both certificates illustrate the programme’s level of ambition. This will be to your benefit; during this programme you will develop into a manager who knows to find his or her place in his or her field with an open mind, anywhere in the world.”

PERSONAL DEVELOPMENT

Unleashing the potential of each student - that is our mission at Stenden University of Applied Sciences. At Stenden you receive personal support and a myriad of opportunities to work on your personal development and expand your horizons. We offer you a programme that stimulates inquisitive and inquiring minds. During your studies you will develop three skills in particular that help you make a difference: › Understanding tomorrow’s challenges › Intercultural skills and the ability to operate in an international environment › Cooperating and creating with others.

FARAI SIBANDA

“I experienced PBL as a very useful learning process. It teaches you to take the initiative and solve problems efficiently and effectively, while gathering knowledge.”

“Tourism Management is an international experience. You study in a multicultural environment and learn about the history and customs of different countries. The programme works closely with Stenden’s research institutes in the field of tourism, including the European Tourism Futures Institute. The curriculum therefore has a strong research component, where you learn to address and solve cases at an academic level.”

PROBLEM-BASED LEARNING: THE KEY ELEMENT

Problem-based Learning (PBL) is one of the key elements of Stenden’s education and is quite different from traditional teaching. It takes a little time to get used to, but after the first few sessions, students are always enthusiastic about this way of learning. Small groups of students meet twice a week to work together. Graduates acknowledge the value of PBL during their internship and career. Apart from PBL, lectures and workshops are offered as supporting classes for students.

FROM GERMANY

SINA EHRESMANN

“The TM programme at Stenden University of Applied Sciences was a great experience to kick-off the international career I had always dreamt about. In my current position as International Sales Representative at the Estrel Berlin I benefited from the diverse learning content, the international approach and intercultural skills taught during the 4-year program and have put them into practice while dealing with a variety of different clients.”

FROM COLOMBIA

Year 2

In the second year, the focus of the programme will shift to the organisation. You will learn how organisations are set up, how they work and what leadership styles suit them the most. This year offers deeper insights and helps you discover what your specialisation in Tourism Management will be.

Tourism Organisation Tourist Destinations Foreign Language

Own initiative Leading a tourism organisation will be the focus of the second year. You will study subjects such as Human Resource Management and Tourism Operations. Working on real-life cases will make students aware of the demands of the tourism branch and what it takes to be a successful leader in this dynamic environment.

TOURISM INDUSTRY FACTS As a future tourism professional it is important to really get to know the industry. That is why in the first year you will be introduced to important aspects of tourism and the companies active in the tourist industry, from the local to the international level. Sustainability is an important theme in the tourism industry and therefore part of the programme.

DESTINATION The tourist destinations will also be discussed extensively this year. You will learn to look at these from a management and marketing perspective. Which natural and cultural resources does a destination have? And how do you make sure you use these resources in a sustainable way? Studying a second foreign language, such as Spanish, French or German, will also be an important part of this year.

DAILY BUSINESS The second module focuses on business processes and management tasks. For example, Organisation & Personnel 1 will introduce you to organisational structures, decision-making processes and policy areas in the tourism industry. What does a manager do during the day? We will take you through a typical working day for a manager in the industry. The next step will be to explore the world of marketing, where you learn to develop a fully-fledged marketing plan, including a financial plan.

FROM GERMANY

FIELD TRIPS As a tourism student you will not just stay in Leeuwarden. The programme has three field trips this year. For example, a tourist product will be researched in Brussels, such as visitor management: how do tourists find attractions and accommodation in a town and how do you guide their search? In the Costa Brava region in Spain you will discover how an international destination deals with tourists. At the end of the year you perform as an independent tour operator and hospitality service provider and organise a short trip for your fellow students.

RESEARCH ON LOCATION This year concludes with the production of a tourism product for a specific target group. You develop this product together with your team. Most subjects in the first year last for one module but some of them take longer. For example English, Business Economics and Management Skills, which are important subjects for a future manager.

GRETA KOENTJE

“TM at Stenden is a pleasant surprise in every sense of the word. When I first arrived here, I had no idea what to expect. In the meantime I can say that I am pleasantly surpri sed by everything here at Stenden: the facilities, the content of the programme, the group work, but also the proactive attitude of the students. I do not see myself studying anywhere else.”

FRANCISCO BOTERO BERNAL

“I chose the TM programme at Stenden because of the international ambience at the university. I believe that the PBL system is in the best interests of students and that it gives us real-time learning experiences. The programme emphasises the managerial aspects of the tourism industry in an intercultural environment and we apply the methods and instruments that we have learned.”

Research options Research is an important part of the Tourism Management programme. From the start of the first year students will develop research skills. The complexity of research questions increases as the programme progresses. The research programme has a high level. The programme works closely with its research institute ETFI (European Tourism Futures Institute). This institute specialises in the development and application of scenario planning for the tourism and leisure industry, both today and in the future. It aims to create a common vision of all key stakeholders by actively involving them in the co-creation and implementation of scenarios.

CENTRE OF EXPERTISE LEISURE, TOURISM & HOSPITALITY (CELTH) Stenden is a partner in the CELTH. The CELTH is focused on developing and spreading knowledge about leisure, tourism and hospitality to make sure that this domain will be better equipped to boost sustainable economic development.

Year 4

In the final year of the programme you will do a seven-month internship, which you will conclude with your dissertation. This tough and exciting year will prepare you for a career in tourism.

The final steps

Students will carry out a large research assignment this year. Groups of four or five students will be working on a research of their choice. It is important to develop inquisitive research skills such as a critical perspective, but also to learn how to process data in statistics and formulate a proper research question. Previous students have researched tourism flows, the role of social media in the tourism industry and the impact of events on the environment.

YOUR STEP INTO THE PROFESSIONAL WORLD Take everything you learned on board and move on to the next level: your internship. Under supervision of the internship organisation and Stenden you will work in the tourism industry for seven months to master all aspects of your future profession. The work experience you obtain will open up more opportunities to find a position after graduation. Many potential employers appreciate this experience and see it as an important added value.

MINORS Students choose a minor in the third year. Examples of minors offered by Tourism Management are: › Community Based Tourism (Thailand), covering small scale tourism in developing countries in collaboration with development organisations and the tourism industry. › Heritage Experience Management (Leeuwarden) focuses on the management of natural and cultural heritage. As well as researching the tourism possibilities, students also focus on maintaining and protecting this heritage. On behalf of local companies, students work on, for example, the development of an app or an experience related to heritage. › Outdoor Leadership and Adventure (Leeuwarden) focuses on planning and guiding/managing outdoor activities such as climbing, mountain biking, survival, etc. You learn in practice what it takes to be an entrepreneur in this industry; how do you set up a business, what does it mean to be a leader, what problems, opportunities and challenges do you have to face and how do you handle these? You also learn to understand, develop and deploy sustainable tourism products and innovative strategies. › International Destination Branding (Qatar) explores how events are used to create a brand identity and make a destination competitive. › Online Marketing and Revenue Management (South-Africa) is an introduction to online marketing and revenue management, pricing and channel management, the related online systems, and above all, the relevance and application for small and medium-sized entrepreneurs in the tourism industry. › Tourism Geography & Planning (Leeuwarden): a new pre-master programme on Geography and Tourism. The programme consists of two minors and a dissertation and is offered in cooperation with the Rijksuniversiteit Groningen (RUG). After completion of this premaster programme and the Bachelor Degree, students can directly enrol in the Master of Science programme Cultural Geography offered by the RUG.

“A student can actually be a part of the organisation, that is great.”

The dissertation crowns your studies. Many students carry out this assignment during their internship. If you write your dissertation during the internship, your employer has a say in the choice of subject. If you do your research outside of the internship, you decide on the subject together with your dissertation supervisor.

“Manon Kouveld is currently doing an internship with us in the product development department. One of her tasks is to develop and provide Neckerman branding material for several destinations. It may sound simple, but it is a hell of a job to do each year. And I have to say I think it is the first time everything was done before the May holiday period, from flyers and beach flags to mascots. That is well worth a compliment.”

GRADUATION ASSIGNMENT The dissertation showcases your ability to analyse the tourism industry at an academic level and translate it into problem definitions and solutions. When necessary, your dissertation supervisor will assist you, but most of the work is done independently. The assignment will be a deepening of the knowledge you have gained and shows how you apply that knowledge in practice. For example, a student recently mapped the influence of sustainability on choices tourists made at the German holiday park where she was doing her internship. This not only demonstrates how the dissertation provides you with an interesting closure of the programme but also looks good on your CV. Many graduates start working with their internship companies after graduation.

“I find it very pleasant that Manon has no permanent assignment for the internship. Students often have a mandatory assignment that they have to work on for a day or a day and a half. This requires necessary guidance and time from our side. Manon can really be a part of the organisation the whole week, and can take on fun projects. For example, she was actively involved with our efforts to make hotel owners aware of the importance of online reviews, like Zoover. She also helps us to think about how we can use customer satisfaction for our marketing with NPS (Net Promoter Score). She has a good level of theoretical knowledge and there is some more exploring to do in practice. She has the opportunity to do that with us.”

INTERNSHIP POSSIBILITIES Tourism students from Stenden can be found at large companies in the industry. Students recently did their internships at: › TUI (in the Netherlands and Germany) › Brewster Travel (Canada) › South America Tours (Ireland and Scotland) › Magnetic South (New Zealand) › Hilton (Doha, Qatar) › Jenman Safaris (South Africa) › Iberinbound (Barcelona, Spain) › Holland America Line (Rotterdam) › Original Travel (London, UK) › Kuoni (Amsterdam) › Thomas Cook (Hoofddorp) › ATP (Schiphol Rijk)

After completing the minor Tourism Geography & Planning and your Bachelor’s degree, you can directly start the Master of Science in Cultural Geography at Rijksuniversiteit Groningen.

“I was interested in management studies that focused on tourism in an international environment. That’s how I came to Stenden. Work ing with the PBL method in small groups was so refreshing! No great big lecture halls. And Leeuwarden is just the right size – everything is accessible by bike. I graduated with an MA degree and now I am work ing for the UN agency responsible for the promotion of sustainable and universally accessible tourism. Specifically, I work in the Market Trends department – we provide the public with market intelligence including the latest tourism market trends, short and long term tourism forecasts and knowledge on specific market segments and source mar kets. My studies at Stenden taught me to work well in teams as well as on my own and to take the initia tive. My advice is to find an intern ship in an area you are interested in and make the most of it.” In partnership with

Spa & Health Business Concepts in Thailand Together with a friend I decided to take the minor Spa & Health Business Concepts. No better place than Asia to do that. When we arrived, a couple of Dutch and German students were about to leave. They gave us some tips & tricks. After checking-in we went directly to one of the tourist attractions: the Chatuchak market. We tasted Thai food for the first time and that was mind-blowing. This experience is still the first thing that comes to my mind when I look back. It was also great to discover the many possibilities for trips, for example to one of the gorgeous islands, I have never seen anything like that.”

“I chose four Tourism Management courses and one Business Management course. I really learned a lot from the Korean style of teaching and the subjects. Although all of these subjects were new to me, I nevertheless managed to handle them in the best possible way. The classes, students and professors were amazing, and I definitely enjoyed my time at the Kyung Hee University. Korea, especially Seoul, was amazing! I was directly drawn to the fascinating and interesting culture and language. The people were the nicest I ever met and Korea is also very safe with a low crime rate, so whenever I walked around the city I felt safe. I highly recommend to take the opportunity to experience Korea. You will meet people from all over the world and interesting Koreans who will be friends for life!”

this is stenden With its Dutch campuses in Leeuwarden, Emmen and Meppel, Stenden University of Applied Sciences is a dynamic and truly international institution. Stenden is one of the most popular European study destinations with approximately 11,000 students, 25% of whom come from outside the Netherlands. Service management is our core discipline and we are Europe’s largest university for hospitality management & tourism management studies. Stenden also offers management studies in the fields of leisure, business, logistics, retail and media and entertainment. The programmes are designed and constantly evaluated by an advisory board of industry leaders to ensure that they continue to meet industry needs. You will have the opportunity to spend a half or full semester at one of our four campuses abroad, go for a paid internship in the third and/or final year of your programme or join our exchange programme by studying at one of our partner institutions. We have over 100 partner institutions in over 40 countries, including the USA, UK, Canada and France. Stenden’s roots go back as far as 1845. “In my fourth year, I got a great opportunity to take up an internship in the States at The Standard, New York. It was an amazing experience in the Room Division department. I spent one year learning and working in the operation department, and now I’m working at The Ritz-Carlton Shanghai, Pudong, as a sales executive. Although it’s a new challenge for me, I am confident and looking forward to taking my next step using all of my Stenden experience.” XIAOXIAO YUAN, CHINA

“I’ll be doing my work placement in Dubai with Chartebay, an Italian company with branches in various countries. I’ll be working on my graduation thesis, developing a marketing and sales plan, and helping to recruit new customers. We’ll be doing this by organising events and trade fairs, and by visiting parties and hotels, delivering presentations and establishing connections with potential customers.” LISETTE KOOPS, THE NETHERLANDS

High quality and affordable education “Working in a team gives me the opportunity to improve my team spirit and the freedom to express my opinions, interact and discuss with others, and sometimes even be inspired by them. This process is simply amazing, since you realise that you are not alone on the road of acquiring knowledge, but sharing it with people from all over the world.” AOWEN FAN, CHINA

All programmes at Stenden meet the quality standards established by the Dutch government and its quality and accreditation assurance body. The Accreditation Organisation of the Netherlands and Flanders (NVAO) is the independent accreditation organisation set up by the Dutch and Flemish governments with the primary goal of providing an expert and objective judgement of the quality of higher education in the Netherlands. Another advantage of Dutch higher education is its affordability compared to other countries, such as the USA, UK or Switzerland, which have relatively higher university tuition fees. Dutch higher education also has an excellent reputation.

The Stenden Learning Companies: Theory meets practice

The in-house Learning Companies are professional training enterprises for specific Stenden degree programmes. Here, you will not only receive regular tuition, you will also benefit from training in a professional organisation, working on real assignments from external customers and gaining invaluable hands-on experience. The Learning Companies include our four-star Stenden Hotel (incorporating restaurants, a conference and events centre and the university canteens) and a studio for media productions. Each programme has its own dedicated Learning Company or dedicated practical component. The combination of academic and practical/managerial experience not only ensures that you will gain knowledge but also essential skills in your work field. Since this is exactly what employers value, as a Stenden graduate you will be assured of a strong position on the international job market.

Internships

Internships provide an essential link between education and employment. An internship usually takes place during the final year, forming a transition phase from graduation to employment. As a student of one of Stenden’s Bachelor programmes, you will spend a significant portion of your studies following a paid internship. Stenden maintains strong links with business, giving you access to internships in countries such as the USA, UK, Canada, Germany, France, Spain, the Netherlands and other countries all over Europe. As an intern, you will put your skills and knowledge into practice, gaining work experience within your field of study. A significant number of students are employed by their internship employer, so you may find that you can start your career immediately after graduation.

Problem-Based Learning

Problem-based learning (PBL) is a key element in Stenden’s education and is a quite different approach from traditional teaching. You will meet twice a week with other students in groups of 12 to 15 and work together on cases and problems reflecting real-life situations. Your PBL sessions will be guided and supervised by a Stenden tutor to ensure that you meet your learning goals. Stenden’s graduates look back on their PBL sessions with great satisfaction, acknowledging their extreme usefulness in their careers. In addition to PBL, each programme includes workshops, lectures and presentations, offering you a diverse and challenging learning environment.

International Applied Business Administration

Introduction International Applied Business Administration is a fascinating and rapidly changing field both in education and the industry. Professional management calls for in-depth knowledge, skills and an appropriate attitude. The Stenden International Applied Business Administration programme sets out to give students precisely those qualities. Recent research has shown that the skills we teach in our programme match well with job descriptions related to business administration – students are gaining the skills required for their field of work.

BACHELOR OF BUSINESS ADMINISTRATION (BBA) FULL-TIME LEEUWARDEN BALI

Career prospects

“You could say that IABA is a business administration programme with a lot of practical assignments. That appealed to me. You learn to solve professional cases. At the same time you practise working together in a team and you find out what role suits you best. The programme gives insight into the way managers think about a company. That is knowledge future employers will appreciate.”

The International Applied Business Administration programme prepares students for a position in senior management. As business administrators, graduates are required to ensure that the part of the organisation they are responsible for performs well. Whether they work in ICT, purchasing, finance, facilities management or administration, these managers have to know what is needed and how the department can contribute successfully to the greater company objectives. A typical graduate of this programme is able to identify problems quickly and enjoys solving them effectively. International Applied Business Administration is an ideal all-round management programme focused on the internal organisation of a company. Graduates take on positions such as: › BRANCH MANAGER of one of a company’s locations, responsible for the day-to-day running of the branch. › PROJECT MANAGER for a profit or nonprofit organisation, ensuring that a project runs smoothly from planning to execution to evaluation. › BUSINESS CONSULTANT within a company or with an independent consultancy

Curriculum

THE PROGRAMME Starting a degree is like entering a company; in the first year, students enter as new employees, growing gradually within the organisation. When they enter their second year, they take on the role of a manager with a responsibility for ensuring that the organisation runs well and looking into how processes can be improved. In the final phase of the degree programme, students further explore the role of a manager, examining the additional factors involved and the skills necessary. Each module contains various forms of assessment in line with the requirements of the body of knowledge and skills needed for a particular profession. In order to complete the degree and graduate successfully, students are required to do a paid internship to demonstrate their competitive edge in the real business world. After graduation, approximately 80% of our students find employment immediately.

“International Applied Business Administration is a fascinating and divergent field of study.”

“Leeuwarden is a nice, quiet place to study if you come from a noisy, crowded city. I worked in the family business in Nepal and wanted to polish my management skills and get some experience of how business is done here. I think my studies at Stenden have augmented my knowledge and skills greatly and I am happy to know I can go back to Nepal and put them to good use.” SAROJ RAJ SHAKYA, NEPAL, ALUMNUS INTERNATIONAL APPLIED BUSINESS ADMINISTRATION

Information Technology

Introduction For those interested in gadgets, games and computers, the Information Technology programme at Stenden is appealing. With this degree, students can continue in any direction in the field of information and communication technology. The first year enables students to discover their strengths and areas of interest before choosing a specialisation for the second year. Information Technology is a practical and rational course.

BACHELOR OF SCIENCE (BSc) FULL-TIME EMMEN

“I really like the system. You are made aware of everything that is needed to do a project and taught to reach out in order to get what you need. This makes you an independent person. Excellent practice.” HAFIZ ABASS, GHANA

Students will first gain an understanding of how perimeter defences work and then move onto the scanning and attacking of networks. Of course, no real network is harmed during this programme. In addition, students will learn how intruders escalate privileges and which steps they should follow to secure a system. CEH consists of several core modules designed to facilitate a comprehensive ethical hacking and penetration testing training.

› DEVELOPER of new electronic payment systems or popular games, or in the field of web development. › IT CONSULTANT working either on a selfemployment basis or for a company.

Whatever the direction chosen, the chances of finding a job after graduating in IT are excellent.

CERTIFIED ETHICAL HACKING Eager to learn how perimeter defences work and how to scan and attack (virtual) networks? Want to learn more about how introducers escalate privileges and how to secure a system? Then this minor might be an excellent choice for you. CEH is a comprehensive ethical hacking and information systems security auditing programme that focuses on the latest security threats, advanced attack vectors, and practical realtime demonstrations of the latest hacking techniques, methodologies, tools, tricks and security measures.

The Information Technology programme is ideal for those who like setting up and maintaining business networks, developing games, websites or videos, or even developing software for mobile devices and technical applications. The programme gives students the knowledge and skills to become software developers, programmers or systems engineers. Information technology jobs use a universal language in a world in which automation and digitalisation are increasingly important. We have contact with many professional companies where students can do their internships, such as Microsoft, Google, Sara Lee, ING Group, ABN AMRO, Atos, Logica and many more.

Information Technology gives huge opportunities for an international career. Graduates in this challenging field of work could take on a position as: › SOFTWARE ENGINEER developing specific software for companies and institutions, so that their clients can be better served and their market share increases.

“The role of technology is changing; it’s no longer a support role. It’s front and centre, driving business performance and enriching people’s lives like never before.”

THE PROGRAMME The Information Technology programme in Emmen offers a state-of-the-art programme in Software Engineering. In the first year, the foundations are laid with subjects such as programming languages, networks, databases and web technology. Alongside the technological subjects, students are taught communication skills for an international environment. Students also learn the different aspects of information technology and how to work in small groups on real case studies. In this process, there is significant and informal contact between students and teachers. In the second, third and fourth year of the programme, students specialise in software engineering, following an internship and completing the course with a final project. A degree in IT will give students considerable work and career opportunities. IT is used in businesses, institutions and government organisations to make work processes, communication and the development of new products and services more efficient. Graduates may also start their own businesses or become selfemployed – the choices are practically unlimited.

“Information Technology is not just about IT. It is much more. Actually, it is IT management. You work on your oral and written communication skills, and learn how to organise and work together with people from all over the world. I think that is fantastic. And I also think that we learn what international companies are looking for. They may outsource programming, but they will keep managing a project themselves. The programme really changed me, also because I chose to follow a programme abroad. I opened up a lot more to other people and developed a broader view of IT. I want to work in an international environment. No better place to start than in an international study environment.” PASCAL GROSS, GERMANY

International Business and Languages

Introduction The International Business and Languages (IBL) programme at Stenden is offered at our Emmen campus. The programme is based on the international environment and the role of international business relations in the current and future global marketplace. Graduates of this programme are equipped with the skills needed to grow from starting positions in International Business.

BACHELOR OF BUSINESS ADMINISTRATION (BBA)* FULL-TIME EMMEN

Career prospects

“I have two reasons for studying IBL at Stenden, Emmen. My father’s business is an inspiring example and my natural gift for languages made the choice an obvious one – the IBL programme corresponds exactly with my ambitions and career aspirations.”

KRISTINA BASKAKOVA, RUSSIA, FIRST YEAR STUDENT INTERNATIONAL BUSINESS AND LANGUAGES

Curriculum

Graduates with a degree in IBL could take on a position as: › INTERNATIONAL MARKETING MANAGER, considering the strategic application of marketing techniques, the market approach, the definition of target groups, and so on. › INTERNATIONAL ACCOUNT MANAGER, responsible for all international contacts between the company and particular clients or client groups.

MINORS IN THIS PROGRAMME As all IBL students are abroad throughout the third year (one semester study abroad and one semester internship), there are no minors for the IBL programme in Emmen. For their study abroad, IBL students can opt for one of our wide range of exchange programmes or go on Grand Tour. An exchange programme gives students the opportunity to take courses not offered at their home campus. They benefit from studying in a new environment, meeting new people and experiencing different cultures. It is an excellent way of combining study and travel. As for the Grand Tour, the combined programme offered in Bali and Bangkok is popular among IBL students. The diplomacy minor in Bangkok is also highly valued. There is also an entrepreneurship minor in South Africa, and of course, IBL students can also follow business courses at our campus in Qatar. The range of possibilities available through our Grand Tour programme gives you great opportunities to discover more about yourself and your role in the global community.

› EXPORT MANAGER investigating and advising on opportunities for exporting products or services. › INTERNATIONAL MANAGER OF CORPORATE COMMUNICATION responsible for internal and external corporate communication, determining the communication programme and expounding communication in different cultural contexts.

› International Law › International Economics & Finance › Modern Foreign Language A › Research Project: To explore beyond frontiers

* In the near future a different degree can be applicable as a result of new legislation.

INTERNATIONAL IBL students study abroad for six months and preferably do their internship abroad as well. In the fourth year, students focus on their International Marketing and Cross Cultural Management major, working on a real business case for a company active in international business. During the second semester, students carry out their graduation project and do research on international business subjects. However, there’s also the possibility of carrying out research in the Netherlands.

International Business and Languages is a commercial programme with a strong focus on intercultural communication. If you want to be successful in business in an international work field, then this is of unique importance. Our students are known to be entrepreneurial and adventurous, and they love to spread their wings. On completion of the International Business and Languages programme, graduates can find work in profit or non-profit organisations; either in the Netherlands or abroad in international business, or communication. International Business and Languages can lead to good career opportunities for those with a head for business and a heart for culture.

MILENA ANTONENKO, UKRAINE, FIRST YEAR STUDENT INTERNATIONAL BUSINESS AND LANGUAGES

“I checked out many universities in the Netherlands before deciding to do IBL at Stenden. It was the right choice for me because I want to find out more about marketing and business economics as well as learn several languages. Currently I’m learning German so that’s good for making friends with the German students here and the marketing course is very useful for understanding people’s behaviour. My advice is to enjoy, travel and grab all the knowledge you can get.”

THE PROGRAMME The Dutch economy thrives on export. To keep stimulating export, businesses need well-educated people who can prepare and export products and/or services. They also need people who can do business on an international level, speak foreign languages and function in cross-cultural environments. These are exactly the characteristics IBL students possess, as the IBL programme is based on three pillars: International Business, Languages and Cross-Cultural Awareness.

A bachelor’s degree in International Logistics Management enables students to take on the management of essential business processes. Graduates are able to oversee aspects such as the optimal flow of goods, planning, warehousing and transport, or manage a production department. The International Logistics

“I knew I wanted to study in the Netherlands and because I like to organise things I chose International Logistics Management. It is a really good programme. Due to the many inter national contacts, both in class with students from different countries and through internships, it offers the possibility of building an international network.”

There is significant demand for International Logistics Management graduates, both in the Netherlands and abroad, so graduates could take on a position as: › LOGISTICS MANAGER PLANNING, steering and coordinating the processes within a company in order to keep quality high but costs low whilst ensuring goods are moved and stored efficiently. › PLANNER responsible for the correct and timely delivery of orders, managing stock, monitoring transport costs and planning and liaising with carriers. › SALES MANAGER responsible for the sale of products and services and in

are naturally interested in subjects such as trade, economics, purchasing, business economics and administration, business processes, marketing and the legal aspects of logistics.

PRACTICAL EXPERIENCE The knowledge acquired in the first year represents the basics for the main phase of the programme. During the subsequent three years, you will build up knowledge and experience, for instance, through projects investigating the logistics process from raw material to final product. Throughout the entire programme students work in small groups on real business cases, bringing theory and practice together in a challenging and enjoyable way.

“Logistics management is underestimated. You can really improve a company, make it more efficient or more sustainable. The Netherlands are good at logistics. That is why I wanted to study here. I like the programme. It really introduces you to the real world. For example, we did a Smart Factory Challenge in which we had to compete with professionals. We didn’t win, but it was very interesting.” THERESA LEITNER, GERMANY, SECOND YEAR STUDENT IN INTERNATIONAL LOGISTICS MANAGEMENT

GRADUATION WITHIN A COMPANY The main phase of the programme includes an internship. It forms an important part of the course, enabling students to apply their knowledge and experience to practice. Rewarding and enlightening, the internship is excellent preparation for a career, giving students the chance to find out about the various professions and positions in the sector and discover what profession would most suit them. The programme finishes with a practical final project centred round a particular problem. This is undertaken within a company or organisation – possibly even a future employer. Minors play an important role in gaining further depth and specialising in a specific field of interest. Within logistics management, students can follow minors such as Green logistics.

These are just a few examples, of course. Some students get jobs as production managers or logistics consultants, working either for a company or in a freelance capacity.

Curriculum

“Deciding on your major is always a jump into the unknown; at least it was for me when I chose Logistics Management in Emmen. However, now that I have graduated and am working in business, I am very pleased with the knowledge I acquired and the opportunities I have been given. In fact logistics is a very interesting subject and important in China. I work in my father’s business now – a wine company with a warehouse and stores – so I apply my knowledge and skills every day.”

THE PROGRAMME The International Logistics programme has two phases, namely the foundation year (the first year) and the main phase. During the foundation year, students are introduced to the various aspects of the logistics process, from marketing, production and logistics to internal organisation and purchasing. They develop skills in logistics, communications and commerce – in short, a diverse range of subjects.

Logistics Management is a broad professional field in which economically oriented logistics experts focus on process optimisation in organisations and chains.

“The Marketing programme is very broad. As a result, you get a good overview of developments in international trade. You can add your own accents with the choices offered by the programme, and you’ll learn to work with students of different nationalities. An excellent preparation for an international career.”

Students can also choose from a broad exchange programme. This allows the programme to further match an individual’s preference for a particular industry or region. By following parts of the programme abroad, students also gain useful international experience, which increases job opportunities in international trade. The exchange program provides an excellent opportunity to combine study and travel. PBL CASE In problem-based learning you will work on a real-life case. This case offers a mix of business and pleasure in which you can put theory into practice. One of the cases is an export or marketing plan for a food manufacturer that wants to conquer a new market. The research is prepared in Emmen. During an excursion to the new export country, students investigate how consumers react to the new product and determine what would be the best way to introduce the new product.

“Markets are changing faster and consumers continuously expect new products and services. This is what is so interesting about marketing. How do you ensure that you are leading the way in the use of new marketing techniques and that you serve the modern consumer optimally? We have noticed that the professional field needs students who are aware of the latest insights, especially in the area of e-marketing.” GERT-JAN HUMMEL, SENIOR LECTURER

Students receive a solid grounding in marketing communication, new earning models, the use of social media, socially responsible entrepreneurship and communication. In addition, students gain practical experience in the leisure industry working in the various sectors of event management, tourism, sports, arts, culture, recreation and media. During the second year students work one day per week for half a year for a leisure company to gain real life experience. The third year focuses on strategic management and networks directing followed by six-month optional minors as specialisations. In the fourth year, students are required to complete an eight month international or national internship. Students complete the programme by writing their thesis. THE PROGRAMME Sustainable tourism lies at the core of this programme. Students learn to prioritise the needs of the community and the environment at a tourist destination, and they learn about the impact tourism has on different cultures and examine which economic factors play a role. Once again, there is no theory without practice. The first year already includes a visit to a European city and a rural tourist area is included, followed by a field trip to the Mediterranean in the second year. Students are introduced to all aspects of a managerial position and are taught how to market a product or service using specific marketing tools and to put theory into practice. To connect theory to the real world, students practise and work with a management simulation game in the third year. During the final year students undertake a seven-month paid internship within an industry-related company and write their bachelor’s thesis. Upon graduation, graduates receive the title Bachelor of Business Administration. With this internationally recognised title, graduates are able to find work anywhere in the world.

MINOR Stenden has a major-minor structure. Although the major is the main focus of the programme, students can deepen or broaden their knowledge by following a minor. Tourism Management offers minor programmes in: Community Based Tourism (Thailand): covering smallscale tourism in developing countries in collaboration with development organisations and the tourism industry. Heritage Experience Management (Leeuwarden): focuses on the management of natural and cultural heritage. Think of climbing, mountain biking, survival, etc. You learn in practice what it takes to be an entrepreneur in this industry; how do you set up a business, what does it mean to be a leader, what problems, opportunities and challenges do you have to face and how do you handle these? You also learn to understand, develop and deploy sustainable tourism products and innovative strategies. International Destination Branding (Qatar): explores how events are used to create a brand identity and make a destination competitive. Online Marketing and Revenue Management (South Africa): introduction to online marketing and revenue management, pricing and channel management, the related online systems, and above all, the relevance and application for small and medium-sized entrepreneurs in the tourism industry. Tourism Geography & Planning (Leeuwarden): a new preMaster’s programme on geography and tourism. The programme consists of one or two minors and a research dissertation. Stenden is offering this pre-Master’s in collaboration with Rijksuniversiteit Groningen. After completing the pre-Master’s and the Bachelor’s degree, you can move directly into the one year Master of Science in Cultural Geography at this university. Service provision is an integral and vital part of all business activity, which has now extended to banking, retailing, hospitality, insurance, and healthcare. More than 60% of the European workforce and 80% of the American workforce is currently engaged in a more broadly defined service sector. Creating service orientation is also high on the agenda of the public sector and traditional production industries. The main challenge in service management is building the organisation’s structure, strategies, processes, and culture around the customer. It involves a change of focus from products to customers. Understanding and creating customer expectations, creating employee commitment, and turning the physical environment into an effective ‘service scape’ are all elements of effective service management.

“I wanted an English programme in the tourism field, an international student body, and a programme with a focus on strategy, analysis and planning. I think I got what I wanted and more. The programme is dynamic and affordable and I can easily travel to other countries from here. The lecturers know I want to get the best out of myself; they are professional and they treat us as equals during class discussions. You can get knowledge from books, but I’ve also got a great deal out of the personal development programme here, and from the opportunities to increase my experience and grow as a person and as a professional.” ABYATAR ABYATAR, INDONESIA, STUDENT OF THE MASTER’S PROGRAMME IN INTERNATIONAL LEISURE AND TOURISM STUDIES

COURSE CONTENT The English language is naturally the central focus of the course, with the aim being for students to achieve an IELTS 6.0. The course is given by teachers from different cultures who are mostly native speakers, qualified and experienced in second language teaching. You will benefit from their expertise and their understanding of the complexities of learning a second language at a high level, as well as the latest technology. The classes include speaking, listening, reading, writing, grammar, vocabulary and business English, as well as general IELTS exam skills. At the end of the course you will take an on-site IELTS exam. PROBLEM-BASED LEARNING The course also includes lessons in problembased learning (PBL). PBL is a problem solving method used extensively at Stenden, with the aim of helping you to develop your skills in critical thinking. Dutch culture, teaching styles and learning styles may be very different from what you’ve experienced in your home country. Consequently, PBL lessons also pay attention to more general study skills, so you’ll learn how to cope with the different styles of teaching and learning at Stenden. The information about the Dutch culture and cultural differences also incorporated into the lessons will help make it easier for you to settle in. PERSONAL COACH You will be assigned to a teacher-mentor who will be responsible for guiding your academic progress throughout the course. The teachers will regularly discuss your progress with you and will intervene in time to offer guidance and avoid problems. ADMISSION To follow the English Language Course, you will need: › A high school graduation diploma from an accredited institution. › An IELTS score of at least 5.0 or TOEFL scores of 500 (paper-based), 173 (computerbased) or 60 (internet-based) or a Cambridge ESOL score FCE-C.

the netherlands

International by definition

International trade has been the cornerstone of the Dutch economy since the 17th century and the country has remained open and internationally-oriented to the present day. Located in a delta where several major European rivers flow into the North Sea, the Netherlands was ideally situated to become a centre of trade and transport. Today, Rotterdam is the largest European seaport and Amsterdam Airport Schiphol is one of the four main European airports. The Netherlands is one of the world’s top ten biggest exporting nations and logistics and distribution are key strengths in an economy rated as the 16th largest in the world, in a country with only 17 million people. As well as having its own major homegrown multinationals, the country hosts the main European distribution centres and EMEA offices of an array of major international companies, all of which offer attractive internship opportunities. As well as being a hub for European and intercontinental travel, the Netherlands benefits from its dense and efficient road and rail networks. This, combined with the fact that the country is little more than 300 km long from north to south and 250 km wide from east to west, makes it easy to get around.

“The amazing international environment and the friendly people made it very easy to settle.” AYUDH BHATTARAI, NEPAL

The colour orange

The Netherlands is a constitutional monarchy in which the House of Oranje [which translates to orange], currently headed by King Willem-Alexander, plays a largely symbolic role. There is great public enthusiasm for the traditions associated with the monarchy, such as King’s Day on April 27, when the whole country takes to the streets decked out in orange for a gigantic party. The same happens when the national football team does well, for example during the 2014 FIFA World Cup.

New York City started out as a Dutch colony called New Amsterdam

The Netherlands is the most active European country on Twitter

The Netherlands has been open to people of non-Dutch origin for a long time. It is attractive because of freedom of thought and religion as well as commerce. Today it is home to over 190 different nationalities. This cultural diversity has made it an environment where knowledge, ideas and cultures from all over the world come together. Another distinctive characteristic of the Dutch is their openness in personal interaction and their direct way of acting and speaking. Dutch society is relatively non-hierarchical – for example, teachers tend to be very accessible and are truly interactive with their students – which can help students really get the most out of their studies. Holland is also a safe country by international standards, with low levels of violence and street crime.

English widely spoken

Thanks to the country’s international orientation, other languages are widely spoken – familiarity with French and German is common and it will be hard to find anyone who does not speak English. In fact, approximately 90% of the Dutch population speaks English – a percentage not found anywhere else in Continental Europe. It was therefore obvious that the Netherlands would become the first non-English speaking country in the world to offer course programmes taught entirely in English. At Stenden, these programmes are delivered in part by native English-speaking staff to maintain the highest teaching standards.

Whenever we talk about transport, we cannot forget bikes. The Netherlands has significantly more bikes than people (work that one out!), with thousands of kilometres of cycle lanes and traffic lights just for cyclists. Given this infrastructure and the fact that the bulk of the country is as flat as a pancake (also a local specialty), bikes are the ideal way to get around over short distances, for example in a student town. Of course, they are also eco-friendly and help you to stay in shape!

dynamic student towns leeuwarden

Leeuwarden has been proclaimed European Capital of Culture 2018, which is nothing short of a dream come true. This title generates energy, creates dynamism and is a clear expression of Leeuwarden’s ambitions.

LEEUWARDEN Leeuwarden is situated in the north of the Nether lands, about 140 km north-east of Amsterdam and only 100 km from the German border. The Wadden Sea (UNESCO World Heritage) and its four islands are a haven for both pristine nature and water sports, and they are within 20 km of the student city Leeuwarden. The historic city centre of the ‘European Cultural Capital 2018’ not only boasts a captivating cultural heritage but also numerous cafés, boutiques and small shopping streets. With its small canals and bridges, Leeuwarden is also known as ‘the Venice of the North’. The lively city hosts no fewer than 25,000 Dutch and international students attending the city’s three universities. About 25% of all students are foreign, making Leeuwarden a truly international student town. All of the facilities that you could wish for are there, including gyms, cinemas, theatres, bars, nightclubs, department stores and a shopping mall. Because of the city’s size and the excellent cycling network every location in Leeuwarden is easy to reach by bike. Everything you might need is nearby, but there is also much to do, see and experience further afield. Fast train services link Leeuwarden to Amsterdam and Schiphol Airport, Groningen Airport Eelde, and the rest of Europe. Leeuwarden is a perfectly-sized, dynamic and international student city, full of warm-hearted people who welcome students with open arms.

THE CAMPUS Stenden currently has more than 11,000 students attending from 85 different countries and employs 1,000 members of staff. Professors maintain the essential link between the programmes and the professional field through applied research. Stenden Leeuwarden is housed in a modern building with stateof-the-art teaching facilities. You can make use of a fantastic open study space with ICT and conference facilities, as well as a special ‘Knowledge Boulevard’, a library, hairdresser, bank, job agency and a canteen where you can enjoy organic dishes from all over the world. The University Sports Card gives you access to a wealth of sports facilities at an affordable price.

EMMEN Emmen, a town with roughly 110,000 inhabitants, lies in the north-east of the Netherlands. The city is a few kilometres away from the German border and therefore part of an active trade community with Germany. The centre of the town hosts WILDLANDS Adventure Zoo Emmen, one of Europe’s finest and most-visited zoos, where you can see animals roaming free over large areas. Sports lovers are well catered for with 13 sports centres and 8 swimming pools. A single sports card gives you access to all of the sports facilities at an attractive price. Emmen is a friendly, laid-back town, but there are still plenty of bars and cafes for a night on the town. You will have no trouble finding accommodation – Stenden operates several student residences with fully furnished rooms. Emmen’s local economy offers plenty of opportunities for internships and some good prospects for graduates of economics.

Leeuwarden, The Netherlands “Truly an international student town!”

emmen

“Leeuwarden is an attractive and cosy student town, filled with positive feelings. There are a lot of things to do on the weekend. What I like most is getting around the city by bike. For students who like an active lifestyle, Leeuwarden offers many indoor and outdoor sport facilities.” MARTIN KUSNEDELCHEV, BULGARIA

Between 2014 and 2019, but culminating in 2018, Leeuwarden will step onto the European stage with at least 40 major cultural events, in cooperation with other cities and areas, both nationally and internationally. The central theme is the connection between the people of Europe who seek to share ideals and build a better future together, one with improved employment, economy and education, with enhanced links between culture and nature and a greater understanding of each other’s identity and diversity.
