10 › WHY STENDEN?

“We carry the world in our hands.” Nowadays, we have access to the entire world 24/7, 365 days a year. Our smartphone, tablet or laptop allows us to buy products just as easily from America, Asia or Amsterdam. Digital innovation has an enormous impact on the world in which we live. Consumers, customers and employees are flooded with information on a daily basis, and are increasingly discerning in their demands and expectations. How do you ensure consumers spend their time and money on your products? How do you bring products and concepts to the attention of international prospects and customers? Marketing is about gaining consumer loyalty for your brand or product, and about building and maintaining relationships. The foundation of your strategy is to build a powerful brand by carefully listening to customers, and by thoroughly analysing and compiling valuable information. GERRY GEITZ, DEAN MARKETING

“The advantage of Problem-based Learning is that you can apply all of your knowledge. I can learn from my fellow students, share experiences and just have a good time solving the cases. For me, PBL means creativity, communication, learning and experiencing.”

Studying at Stenden PERSONAL DEVELOPMENT

Unleashing the potential of each student - that is our mission at Stenden University of Applied Sciences. At Stenden you receive personal support and a myriad of opportunities to work on your personal development and expand your horizons. We offer you a programme that stimulates inquisitive and inquiring minds. During your studies you will develop three skills in particular that help you make a difference: › Understanding tomorrow’s challenges › Intercultural skills and the ability to operate in an international environment › Cooperating and creating with others. PROBLEM-BASED LEARNING: THE KEY ELEMENT

Problem-based Learning (PBL) is one of the key elements of Stenden’s education and is quite different from traditional teaching. It takes a little time to get used to, but after the first few sessions, students are always enthusiastic about this way of learning. Small groups of students meet twice a week to work together. Graduates acknowledge the value of PBL during their internship and career. Apart from PBL, lectures and workshops are offered as supporting classes for students. LEARN IN PROJECTS

Each study year at Stenden consists of four periods of nine weeks. During each period or module you will work on a theme with a close link to the real world. You will be introduced to all aspects of the theme through different subjects. These subjects therefore change per module, depending on the knowledge and skills you need for a certain theme. PERSONAL COACHING

At the start of the programme, you are assigned a coach who will personally guide you during the entire programme and will help you to think critically about yourself, your way of learning and your future career. NORA DIMACHE

As a “fresher”, you’ll master the basic marketing tools. The first year of the Marketing programme focuses on both the theoretical and practical sides. You’ll learn how to make a professional Prezi presentation, gain negotiating skills and learn how online marketing works.

1

Year 1 The first steps into the international and digital world of marketing

The study programme: what is in store? FIRST YEAR In the first year you will get acquainted with all the aspects of international and intercultural marketing, notably at executive level. The year is divided into four periods in which you’ll work on a project that enables you to apply your acquired theoretical knowledge. For example; “Innovate don’t imitate” is a project in which you’ll improve an existing product. As a marketer, what can you add to the process of innovation? How do you present and conquer the market with this renewed product? The fourth period is all about online marketing. How do you communicate through websites and social media? What other online resources are available? This programme unleashes your creativity.

LARISSA WIEDEMANN

“Globalisation increases opportunities and competition.” Increasing speed, flexibility and efficiency; these are the key words in the 21st century. Especially in the last two decades, globalisation has increased the connectivity and interdependence of the world’s market and business, and made it easier for people to travel, communicate and conduct business internationally. This not only implies increased opportunities, but also increased competition. I therefore chose an international study program and an internship at Lufthansa Cargo, a leading international company in Germany. Studying at Stenden prepared me very well for my internship in the area of Product Management, which is interfaced with many other departments like Law and Marketing. Not only do I have the competitive advantage I gained from learning different approaches through PBL sessions, but I also improved my communication and intercultural skills.

Year 2 International marketing research Strategic (export) marketing Marketing communications

The second year will go into more detail. When you bring a new product to a foreign market you need to know about international laws and marketing. You will explore the possibilities and obstacles through investigating actual cases.

Take a closer look… SECOND YEAR After the foundation has been established in the first year, you will deepen your knowledge on subjects such as international market research and strategic marketing. In addition, you will further develop your understanding and application of communication strategies whilst at the same time improving your level of English. Consumer behaviour and international law are also major subjects, as is Customer Relationship Management (CRM). You will learn about big data, data analysis, Google Analytics, consumer behaviour and psychology. In short: the main focus of the second year is on what current marketers need to know specifically. Exciting international field trips are part of the programme, as well as presentations by guest lecturers from international businesses and universities.

Want to travel the world? Each year more than 400 students choose to go on a Grand Tour to one of our campuses in South Africa, Qatar or Bali. They become acquainted with different cultures and customs. Stenden’s Grand Tour is based on the idea of acquiring knowledge and coming to understand other cultures, countries and people. You could also opt for an exchange programme at one of our partner universities in Europe, the USA, Asia or Australia, just as about 200 of our students do every year. The exchange semester takes place in the third or fourth year and lasts one semester.

THIRD YEAR Do you want to explore the world? This is your year! You can do both your minor and internship wherever you would like! It’s your choice. Amsterdam, Hamburg, Beijing? Would you rather study in Chicago? Or do you prefer to stay in the Netherlands? No problem! Throughout your internship you will work in a company with an international environment, operating on an international scale. The minor enables you to study certain aspects of marketing in depth, or to expand your knowledge and skills at an international partner university in Finland or Vietnam. PASSIONATE ABOUT TRAVELLING OR HORSES? Would you like to work in the travel and event industry? Are you passionate about horses? Stenden gives you a chance to become both a marketing professional and a specialist in one of these specific fields. For year three you can choose to make events or the equestrian world your subject of study within your Marketing programme. International Travel Trade & Event Marketing is about creating inspiring events and experiences for the sustainable tourist industry and about creating innovative marketing, sales and branding concepts to sell these experiences. Equine marketing offers you unique opportunities to learn all about events and marketing in the equestrian world. What sets this world apart from other industries? What do you need to know about this world to set yourself apart as a marketing professional in this field?

The Netherlands The Netherlands – or Holland – has been open to people of non-Dutch origin for a long time. Today it is home to over 190 different nationalities and hence one of the most international countries in the world. It is a safe country by international standards, with low levels of violence and street crime. Dutch society is relatively non-hierarchical. For example, teachers tend to be very accessible and truly interactive with their students, which can help students really get the most out of their studies. Last but not least, almost everyone in the Netherlands speaks English!

ANGELA DENKHAUS, FROM GERMANY

“International Relations teaches you to understand the diplomatic, political and economic world from another point of view. It also teaches you how to adapt to living in a South East Asian country, how to deal with customs, regulations, behaviours and traditions, and learn the basics of a completely different language. In other words, it’s an excellent opportunity to get out of your comfort zone.” “My personal highlight was experiencing the Thai culture. The festivals, the food, the language, the traditions, everything is just so different from everything I’d ever known in Europe. I loved travelling, seeing the beautiful country and meeting the Thai people. I noticed that the differences between being a tourist and actually living in the country are immense! People treat you very differently when you speak the language a little, whether you just want to buy some fresh fruit or give directions to a cab driver.”

Grand Tour The Grand Tour offers you the possibility of studying at our international campuses in the Netherlands, South Africa, Qatar, Indonesia and Thailand (www.stenden.com/grandtour). With an exchange programme you have the opportunity to take courses offered at a foreign university and learn from different professors (www.stenden.com/exchange).
