June 14, 2018 marked the start of our 2018 STEMworks™ Internship! Our interns were given the opportunity to network with industry professionals during our 5x5 session, where the interns learned about their current profession and what inspired them to choose their career. They were also advised to keep an open mind and be flexible as plans for the future may change.

Our interns were also introduced to Lynda.com, an online learning platform where students can learn and obtain new skills through videos taught by industry experts. This gives students the opportunity to be self directed learners and obtain online certifications.

Knowing how to “brand” yourself is important to show that you are the right person for the job you’re applying for! Interns learned that appearance and communicating through body language is a crucial part in making first impressions in the workforce. Another key point in marketing yourself is understanding how to capture the attention of future employers through resumes and cover letters.

In any work environment, you will encounter problems and are expected to formulate solutions. Using the Engineering Design Process, our interns were challenged to utilize their soft skills and cooperatively direct an Ozobot around the islands of Hawaii.

My project involved working with a team to promote the overall STEMworks™ Internship Program. Using software such as Photoshop, Illustrator, After Effects, and Final Cut Pro, as well as online services like Constant Contact and Qualtrics, my team produced the STEMworks™ Stories Newsletters and Videos showcasing the 2018 interns and their experiences in their host companies.

During my internship, I visited a variety of host companies, allowing me to network with potential employers, many of whom I could offer my digital media skills for their future projects. I plan on using this experience in college and in future employment.

Being a STEMworks™ intern allowed me to make connections with individuals and companies that I would have never thought I would encounter. This opportunity provided me a new experience, environment, and workflow that goes beyond what a typical classroom offers.

The experience and knowledge I gained from this internship will propel me far into my career. Besides networking with people and industry partners, I learned how to become proficient in industry standard programs such as Civil 3D and Blue Beam Revu.

Eunice Hanaya Gaper Civil Engineer Assistant, SSFM International Kauai High School

My major project during my STEMworks™ internship career was to update the sewer systems for the Hale Kupuna Heritage Home.

I used AutoCAD and Civil 3D to design the plans for the kitchen, employee restroom, and laundry. Having to do these tasks pushed me to improve my efficiency as I sketched my drafts.

This experience will definitely have significance for my future plans in life, such as college and further internships in the following years. On another note, I can also share my experience with other students to encourage them to seek out these precious opportunities that are practical for their own futures.

Being a STEMworks™ intern entitles me with a great opportunity to shed light on my future through the exploration of a career path. I am able to immerse myself into a profession and gain important lessons that are scarce to receive elsewhere.

Assistant CAD & Graphics Technician, Alexander & Baldwin Kihei Charter School

My project involved utilizing industry software, such as ArcGIS, Microsoft Excel, and Autodesk Civil 3D, to create and edit a series of maps representing the Alexander & Baldwin land on Maui and Kauai. I also located and preserved government placed triangulation stations across Maui.

The skills that I learned from this internship program are lifelong, especially considering that I intend to eventually work in a STEM career. Additionally, the STEMworks™ Live weekly meetings have given me an in-depth look at resources that will help me beyond what I have learned with my host company.

Being a STEMworks™ intern means that I am one of a select few students who are able to have an opportunity to explore their career interests and gain job experience while still being a high school student. It also means that I can say I’ve worked with a reputable company and learned from industry professionals.

I worked on a slew of different projects and tasks ranging from georeferencing maps to finding governmental triangulation stations. To complete these tasks, I utilized industry software such as ArcGIS, Civil 3D, Microsoft Excel, and Adobe Acrobat. My skills in these programs have drastically increased from the start of the internship, and I am learning much more on a daily basis.

I can use my experience gained from the STEMworks™ Internship and apply it to my future career. When I enter the workforce, I will have a better idea of how I am supposed to behave in a professional work environment. Also, I will benefit from the skills I have learned in Microsoft Excel, regardless of the career path I choose to follow.

Being a STEMworks™ Intern is a chance for me to develop professional skills and to get out of my comfort zone. Interning at Alexander & Baldwin is a valuable experience that I will benefit from for years to come.

Programmer, Air Force Research Lab Maui High School

My project with Air Force Research Lab (AFRL) consisted of scripting a planetarium presentation that incorporates the culture of Polynesian wayfinding. In doing so, I was also able to learn a new programming language, as well as gain a better understanding of the stars above us and, overall, our universe. During my internship, I used programs such as Sublime for coding, Nightshade for the commands used in the planetarium, and Google for research.

I will use the experiences gained from my internship in the future as a reference to help determine what I want to do versus what I wouldn’t want to do. In addition, this internship has made me aware of new job possibilities and fields that I never knew existed.

Being a STEMworks™ intern means gaining real-world career experience under a controlled and exciting environment. The STEMworks™ Internship program has given me the opportunity to surprise myself.

Kawena Kekuewa

Marketing Specialist and Videographer, Condominium Rentals Maui High School

As the marketing specialist and videographer at Condominium Rentals Hawaii (CRH), my project consisted of brainstorming how to market the company’s name to guests and condo owners via the web. Our project goal was to not only make sure that Maui and Kauai visitors received all of the information necessary to prepare for an island visit, but to also be able to trace that information back to CRH. Through this STEMworks™ Internship program, I’ve learned a lot about how companies promote their names to customers, whether it’s obvious or not. I will definitely be using this knowledge in future jobs and for myself in general.

Being a STEMworks™ intern gives me the opportunity to use my skills in real life situations. This internship has also given me challenges to learn new programs and graphic skills.

Ranch Hand, Double D Farm and Ranch, L.L.C Mililani High School

I worked on many projects during my STEMworks™ internship including utilizing equipment such as a pickaxe, shovel, and saws to reduce invasive species (i.e., California grass and Autograph trees) overtaking the garden; transplanting potted plants in the ground; and helping to take care of the three horses, four sheep, three geese, silky chicken, three kittens, and a wild pig with her four piglets on the farm. My final project will involve preparing the farm for an upcoming event that will be a fundraiser for Susan G. Komen and the farm.

After my STEMworks™ internship, I plan to use my experience in the classroom. I’m in the Natural Resources Career Pathway at my school and am about to enter a program called, “Future Farmers of America,” - a program where students use the school day to study for competitions. I will be able to show my classmates the techniques that Double D Farm and Ranch uses to manage their farm and showcase my understanding to my teacher. I also plan on going back to the farm as a volunteer on the weekends.

Being a STEMworks™ intern means gaining experience in the field you aspire to pursue in the future.

B r a n d o n M a rc o s IT Support, Kukui IT Kauai High School

During my STEMworks™ Internship with Kukui IT, I worked alongside IT Support members of the company helping local schools troubleshoot and fix software and hardware issues on their computers and school network.

We also imaged and prepared a hundred new laptops which will be used for the next school year.

My experience with Kukui IT will aid me in preparing for life after high school as I plan in majoring in Information Technology or Computer Engineering.

The technical skills and people skills will also provide me with foundational knowledge for future careers in the technology industry.

Being a STEMworks™ intern allows me to fully explore my interests in technology and engineering while having the opportunity to immerse myself and help my local communities. This is the first step towards a possible lifelong career.

Digital Media Specialist, Cyanotech Kealakehe High School

My STEMworks™ Internship project was to create a virtual farm tour for my host company Cyanotech. I learned new video/audio editing software such as DaVinci Resolve 15, and I improved my video editing and photography skills. I also learned the inner workings of a company that follows Good Manufacturing Practice (GMP) policies in order to maintain strict product quality.

I will be able to use my new and improved skills in the future to not only gain and maintain employment. Because I always enjoy taking photos and videos, I hope these skills will help me get a job or obtain a major in graphic design.

Being a STEMworks™ intern means the ability to improve one’s skills with real life experiences. Not only does each experience inspire each one of us to follow a STEM career, but it gives high school students an experience that many will not be able to obtain until college. The STEMworks™ Internship program prepares us to understand how a workplace functions and how to balance our social lives with our work lives.

I love being in the STEMworks™ Internship program. What I experienced for my internship is something that many people do not have the opportunity to do. I love medicine and being in this program has allowed me to get a head start in the field. I learned how to talk to patients, and how to take vitals using all of the advanced technology that we have at the Lanai Community Health Center.

As I plan to join the Coast Guard and enter into the medical field, I will be able to use all the knowledge I learned from the STEMworks™ Internship program and my internship to follow my goals. I will use the tips-and-tricks that STEM taught me and become a better person through my career.

Being a STEMworks™ intern means that I have responsibilities.

It means that I am a part of a great program that allows high school students a chance to start chasing their dreams early on. My STEMworks™ internship projects include creating new print designs, producing merchandise, and creating an online store for my host company, MyLei/Molokai Nui A Hina Project. To create the store, I helped coordinate and run a photo shoot; used Wix to upload all of the products, including the product descriptions, prices, sizes, and colors; and I helped design the overall aesthetic of the website.

I aspire to be an independent multimedia artist and an entrepreneur.

This STEMworks™ Internship helped me become immersed in different aspects that I would be doing if I achieved my goal. It gave me a taste of what it would be like to be an entrepreneur and an artist and helped solidify my goal.

My STEMworks™ project has two main goals: the first goal was to create competition guides that future students working with my mentor, Dr. J.D. Armstrong, can use to enter the science research competitions I have entered previously. The second goal was to continue my astronomy research project, which focuses on runaway and hypervelocity stars.

As I’m heading to college this fall, I know that the skills I have gained through this STEMworks™ Internship will be crucial. The technical skills will help me with future projects and has built my resume for future employment. I have also learned so much through the STEMworks™ Live webinars, such as applying to jobs and tips to make my college transition go smoothly.

Being a STEMworks™ intern means having the opportunity to get a taste of what working in the field would really be like, but as a young high school student. A lot of people do not have the opportunity to build these professional working skills until college-level internships or later in their career. It’s amazing that we have gotten to start developing these skills already this summer!

My STEMworks™ internship project included creating a computer program that can help astronomers find and predict the next transit of an exoplanet from just one set of observations. I found this project fun and challenging to try and learn the math and figure out how to automate it.

The improvements I have made to my programming skills are always going to stay with me. It was also very valuable to be able to witness what it feels like to have a job in astronomy.

Being a STEMworks™ intern means that you are someone who not only has skills in technology, but also has the passion to develop those skills further. The internship has been a learning point in my life as it has exposed me to the real-world experience of what a job feels like and has allowed me to use my skills in a practical sense.

I have been using Final Cut Pro to create a promotional video for the Maui Food Innovation Center. I filmed on-site at many different locations and edited at home. The STEMworks™ Internship program is exciting in many different ways because I have the opportunity to gain real-world experience. My STEMworks™ experience was entirely hands on and I was completely in charge of what I wanted to do.

I will use my experience from the STEMworks™ Internship program to continue to build my professional network. I have gained a list of contacts that may be useful for me in my future career and also in extracurricular activities.

Being a STEMworks™ intern means that I am provided new opportunities and networking connections. Not only that, but I get to serve the community while gaining experiences for myself.

My STEMworks™ project was mainly focused on rat lungworm disease, while working on aquaponic systems. During my internship, I was able to improve my listening and presentation skills.

I will carry on my experience from this STEMworks™ Internship by informing people about the rat lungworm disease. I will also continue to utilize the presentation skills that I learned during STEMworks™ Live in school.

Being a STEMworks™ intern means that I have the opportunity to experience a real life job and learn more from this program. I have responsibilities and things to accomplish; therefore, I will do my very best. I learned a variety of different skills such as perseverance, organization, and efficient planning during my STEMworks™ Internship. I also learned how to use several new equipment such as a water testing device that can determine the water’s pH as well as different pesticides used in the aquaponics system.

The experience I have acquired from the STEMworks™ Internship allowed me to bring the basic knowledge of aquaponics and farming to use at home and hopefully to Nevada where I plan to attend college after graduation.

I worked with data from different Maui County medical facilities and compiled them into files that would later be uploaded and imported to a medical map as data points on ArcGIS for my STEMworks™ Internship. My mentor and I created a story map that is easy to operate and understand when someone is looking for a certain medical field, being anything from physical therapy to hospice.

I will take what I gained from the STEMworks™ Internship Program back to school. I am an upcoming senior and within my STEM class, my teacher will have us create projects within ArcGIS. Now that I have a better understanding of ArcGIS than I had before, if anyone in my class is having problems, I can confidently help them.

Being a STEMworks™ intern means that I attempted to work in a field that I might possibly be involved in someday. The STEMworks™ Internship Program has given me experience in the real world career. It has given me opportunities to network with industry professionals that have all had a STEMworks™ experience in one way or another.

During my STEMworks™ Internship, I learned how to properly market products, how to use Adobe Photoshop and Illustrator and learned the CAD development tools within Illustrator. I also learned marketing skills such as how to catch a customer’s attention and how to sell the product within a minute.

After my STEMworks™ Internship, I will use this experience and work ethics in my upcoming education in college and career.

Learning these responsibilities will better me as a student, and an employee as a whole. Learning how to network will greatly help my chances of getting a job after college, and it will help me gauge the real world as I enter it.

Christine Davis Chief Marketing Officer, qubedup Kihei Charter School

At my host company, qubedup, I worked on marketing, social media managing, logo designs, created designs for products, and worked on innovative fashion technology. I learned so much about marketing, selling products, and designing throughout my internship, and I acquired new skills in CAD modeling through tutorials from Lynda.com, which I used as a reference to construct logo designs in Autodesk Fusion 360. As for product managing, I used GIMP and Google Slides to create designs, uploaded those designs to RedBubble as an art portfolio for qubedup.

The experience I gained from participating in the STEMworks™ Internship Program has helped me solidify my goals for the future and potential career paths. I will be continuing to work with qubedup after the internship program is finished. I hope to contribute greatly to this company, as well as continue to improve the skills I gained through the internship program.

Being a STEMworks™ intern means to be a part of a network of passionate individuals in the STEM education movement. It means dedicating myself to interesting and innovative work, and changing the world through STEM.

Sophia Davis Chief Technical Officer, qubedup Kihei Charter School

My STEMworks™ Internship projects were several notably different yet connected projects. My first project was a smart lei, a unique Hawaiistyle wearable technology with various lights and sensors that react to the world around it. The second was creating digital designs that have an extra story or layer for our Redbubble portfolio and other print on demand merchandise services. The final project is designing and coding a special web app for qubedup that has a connection to some of our designs.

After my STEMworks™ Internship, I want to use what I learned about marketing, graphic design, and web app design to improve upon a personal project that I’m very passionate about. For my senior project, I taught computer programming classes at my high school and created a coding club. However, my dream is to build upon that and create an interactive and intuitive web application that will help students at Kihei Charter School learn about how awesome coding is. I’d also like to make a fun social media presence for the web application to get the students more interested in it.

Finally, I’d like to use the professional development skills I learned from this internship to pursue more amazing opportunities and internships in college.

Being a STEMworks™ intern means learning a variety of skills and trying on many different “hats.” It means getting to learn both technical and professional skills and having hands-on experience in a real workplace. Finally, it is an opportunity to learn more about a new career path from amazing mentors who are very knowledgeable about the field and want to help you succeed.

Justin Hanks Automation Engineer, Monsanto King Kekaulike High School

I interned at Monsanto last year and my project consisted of prototyping with Arduino boards to create a temperature sensor and moisture probe. This year, my project was to redesign the SCADA which the updated moisture and temperature probes feed into in order to create a more professional system. Being able to come back and see the development of my project from last year has been amazing.

The experience I gained from my STEMworks™ Internship will help me in my job because of the real-world problem solving skills that I gained such as troubleshooting. I plan on becoming a computer engineer and will be designing and working on projects like the moisture probe and integrating them with software. Another important skill that I had the opportunity to experience was that maintenance, which is surprisingly complicated.

Being a STEMworks™ intern is that STEM is all about exploring Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math, and the STEMworks™ Internship gives you the opportunity to explore different jobs, technologies, and software. It means taking a hold of my future in my career pathway,

Amanda Schiff

Graphic Designer, Canada-France-Hawaii Telescope Kealakehe High School

Over the duration of my STEMworks™ Internship at CanadaFrance-Hawaii Telescope, I worked on a variety of different graphic design projects all related to the company’s outreach program. I worked on creating business cards, sticker designs, t-shirt designs, and several other various graphics that my mentor determined needed revamping or updating.

After working as a STEMworks™ intern at CFHT, I know what to expect when it comes to being a part of a real workplace environment. I was exposed to a range of interactions that has helped me become stronger at networking and knowing how to further advance opportunities. Through my internship, I have also become much stronger at graphic design work, since I was presented multiple opportunities to practice and try out new design styles through the different projects I worked on.

Being a STEMworks™ intern means having the opportunity to get a preview of a real-world job environment outside of the high school classroom. These types of experiences are incredibly valuable to the student because they are able to apply their existing skills to real world projects through their internship projects, as well as gain knowledge about STEM field careers and industry-level technology.

Research Assistant, Maui Nui Seabird Recovery Project St. Anthony School

I learned how to gather data on different types of seabirds by traveling to Ho’okipa and Molokini during my STEMworks™ Internship. I gained more knowledge about how seabirds are important to the Hawaiian Islands. I also learned how to use Autodesk Fusion 360 and made a 3D printed part to enclose and angle a solar GPS tracker for pueos.

After completing my STEMworks™ Internship, I plan to further my work in graphic design and videography. I will be able to help other businesses with 3D printing or designing products in the future.

To me, being a STEMworks™ intern means I have the opportunity to get involved with something I may further pursue. I am able to work alongside a company and understand how they manage while helping them to improve their business.

I worked both on-site and at the Goodfellows Bros., Inc. office, working and modifying plans, and delivering them to either the construction teams or the buyers/owners during my STEMworks™ Internship. I learned how to use CAD, specifically in a business setting. I learned how to work with drone software, hardware, Trimble equipment and software that helps with GPS and plans.

After the STEMworks™ Internship Program, I would like to immediately use the engineering business practices for my robotics team at my school. I would also like to use this experience to broaden my skills beyond working with computers so that I have many different specialties in the technological career world.

Being a STEMworks™ intern means having an opportunity to learn about STEM and going into a work environment to gain real-world experience and helping out the community and/or business. It means properly setting up for your future.

During my STEMworks™ Internship project as an Engineering Services intern, I learned and completed a wide variety of tasks on different programs with the goal of facilitating efficient and planned field work for construction projects at Goodfellow Bros., Inc. I used Autodesk programs such as AutoCAD and Civil 3D to create roads and sewers for an undisclosed project, a sewer system and blasting pattern for the site of the new Kihei High School, and compared surfaces of areas. I also used Trimble Business Center to analyze drone data like point clouds and mosaics collected with a Phantom 4 Pro Obsidian drone.

The STEMworks™ Internship was extremely valuable to me for two reasons: I gained an understanding of how to use the Autodesk programs and what applications might require them and that I can put my firsthand knowledge of the programs down on a resume. I can also decide whether or not I want to pursue a career that would require me to use those programs.

Being a STEMworks™ intern means that I have been given a fantastic opportunity by MEDB to gain real-life work experience in a STEM field and figure out what I want to do with my career. Social Media Strategist, DevLeague Moanalua High School

I worked on producing content for DevLeague’s social media, mainly Instagram, for my STEMworks™ Internship. I learned how to use Canva, Adobe After Effects, Photoshop, and do a competitive brand analysis. By using Canva, I was able to make sample designs.

I also did research on competitive companies and how to use social media for business.

After completing the STEMworks™ Internship program, I will use what I learned in my classes in high school as I am going to be a junior as well as after graduation. Using the skills that I gained during the inernship, I will use the software to make sample projects, edit pictures, invitations and so much more.

Being a STEMworks™ intern means being a leader and a hard worker. It also means that you are a strong, smart person who is not afraid to try and learn something new.

During my STEMworks™ Internship, there was no set project while working with Cassie. Instead, we did a multitude of work all over Maui. I filmed small highlight reels of the weddings we went to and edited them. I would also edit photos for Cassie using Adobe Lightroom CC. While working with Cassie, she advised me to utilize my current skills to find a side job while I’m in college, which is something I am considering. There were also a lot of great presenters during the STEMworks™ Live. I especially loved Rob Oshima’s use of quotes during his presentation. He quoted: “Experience is what you get when you didn’t get what you want,” which I see as, “take as much opportunities that you can get.” Doing this will provide insightful glimpses of your future. I also enjoyed Paul Nowak’s presentation since I love reading. Learning how to speed read will help me manage my time more productively in college.

I consider the STEMworks™ interns to be pacesetters. We are the group of kids who are leading the current generation when it comes to STEM related fields.

Kia’i loko, Hui o Kuapa Molokai High School

My STEMworks™ Internship as a Kia’i loko at Keawanui Fishpond included work with volunteer groups, maintenance of the fishpond and yard, eradication of non-native species on both the land and in the fishpond, and to inspire and educate others about the importance of protecting our land and natural resources. Our two biggest ongoing projects are the eradication of the jellyfish that have invaded our pond and setting up our oyster farm.

I plan to use this experience to enhance my resume by adding the skills, knowledge, and confidence I have learned during the STEMworks™ Internship.

I will also use what I learned not only in my next internship opportunity, but in my everyday life, school, college and my career in the future.

To me, being a STEMworks™ intern means being a leader, and someone who is interested in learning and exploring for the benefit of their education and life now, and the future.

I created videos to promote Da Kitchen and created more of a social presence for them during my STEMworks™ Internship. Before opening, I go in and film the most that I can. On other days, I am editing and getting feedback from my mentor, Ke’ala Richards, on aspects that I can change in the videos.

Because of the STEMworks™ Internship Program, I have learned many new facets about myself and filming in a restaurant environment. One thing I learned is that in certain areas it can be hard to get a particular shot that you have in mind. I can take that with me in the future by remembering that I can’t always get what I want, and I have to work with what I have.

To me, being a STEMworks™ intern means an endless opportunity and experience. Throughout the internship so far, I have learned new sides about the profession that I enjoy and more about myself.

For my STEMworks™ Internship project, I worked as a website designer to create a website for a non-profit organization, edit the #ShopSmallHawaii website, and improve the gallery page of the Patsy T. Mink Center for business and Leadership (MCBL) website, using SquareSpace. I attended meetings with MCBL clients and worked with my host company team to plan and execute the YWCA Girls’ Summit Youth program. I also designed the journal pages, flyer, and youth logo for the program.

From this STEMworks™ Internship Program, I gained communication, marketing, web design, user interface and teaching skills that will prepare me for college and a future STEM career. I explored a career focusing on human-computer interaction, empowering girls, strengthening communities, and standing up for social justice while gaining employability skills with STEM industry connections.

Being a STEMworks™ intern means engaging in the community with real-world opportunities in preparation for a STEM career.

Sales is like the interview process. Be able to sell yourself and have the ability to talk confidently since “you” are the product.

Robb Oshima also talked about finding great mentors. Seek those who have the same interest as you. They contribute a lot to your success. Mentors aren’t fully aware of how much their guidance helps students - you are the best person to bring this to their attention.

Thriving through Entrepreneurship Austin Alimbuyuguen, Filmmaker

At 21 years old, Austin has earned many state and national awards demonstrating that age is never a limitation and showing young students that they can achieve their goals and exceed their expectation through hard work and passion. He also emphasized putting yourself out there and taking theopportunities given to you. You might not get paid, but your efforts, hard work, and “quality” of your work will be recognized.

What Am I Worth?

Sean Leslie, PayScale

Talking about how much you’re earning is always a sensitive subject. Sometimes we’re not earning how much we’re actually worth. Sean Leslie, a senior content strategist at PayScale, emphasized that it’s okay to negotiate your pay. You do not have to always accept what is being offered to you.

Don’t undervalue yourself! Studies show that 75% of the people who do negotiate end up getting a higher salary.

Speed, Comprehension, and Retention Paul Nowak, Iris Reading

Reading faster and remembering more can boost your productivity! Paul Nowak, founder of Iris Reading, emphasized that the key parts to boost your productivity is practicing your speed, comprehension, and retention. To improve your speed, you want to go through speed drills. With speed drills, you want to purposely read faster by moving your eyes faster. He also provides tips and tricks for students preparing to take the SAT and ACT.

College Admission and the Common App Ruben Yamada, Hawaii Pacific University

There are many misconceptions about the Common App that prevents students from utilizing it. Ruben Yamada, an assistant director of admissions at Hawaii Pacific University, shared that the Common App allows you to quickly apply to over 750 different institutions. He also advised students to not be afraid to apply to private schools; private schools often have institutional aid which means attending a private school could be the same cost as attending a public school.

Annette Lynch, MEDB’s High Tech Maui Presenting infront of a huge crowd is always intimidating and can be very overwhelming. Annette Lynch, a TEDxYouth Coach and MEDB’s High Tech Maui project assistant, helped our STEMworks™ interns with their presentation skills. She pointed out that the three areas to work on when preparing for a presentation are: your confidence, message, and delivery.
