STEM Work-Based Learning Ahead!

This year, thirty-three high school students, college students, and young entrepreneurs representing the most promising STEM talent across the State of Hawaii will be presenting their innovative projects at the 2019 STEMworks™ internship Showcase on July 26, 2019 at the Maui Research & Tech Park on Maui!

Participating schools and institutions include Bryn Mawr College, Freelancer, H.P. Baldwin High School, Henry J. Kaiser High School, Kauai High School, Kealakehe High School, King Kekaulike High School, Lanai High and Elementary School, Maui High School, Maui Prepatory Academy, Moanalua High School, Molokai High School, Seabury Hall, University of Hawaii, University of Hawaii Maui College, and University of Portland.

For the past six weeks, STEMworks™ interns have been busy using industry standard technologies to develop a meaningful service learning project to improve their community. The STEMworks™ internship is designed to prepare students with real-world, hands-on career exposure, college and employability skill building opportunities, and industry networking experiences.

Along the way, they worked hard at raising the level

of their creative and critical thinking, as well as their professional and software skills.

For over two decades, STEMworks™ and its partners have delivered a highly successful internship program that has consistently aligned the abilities and interests of Hawaii’s students with industry professionals throughout the islands.

The experiences continue to provide invaluable work-based learning for STEM students not only to explore and expand into career pathways, but also to secure viable job opportunities.

Our 2019 STEMworks™ internship had 20 females and 13 male interns selected for internships at 24 host companies and organizations from every island across the state.

This STEMworks™ internship was enhanced with weekly professional speakers, training sessions, as well as STEMworks™ “LIVE” webinars. All were designed to inspire and build professional skills in interviews and resume branding, elevator pitch, exposure in free tools, college admissions, life skills, work ethic, financial, and more!

Summer Adventures in Healthcare In June, students from Maui, Moloka’i and Lana’i took part in Summer Adventures in Healthcare. The three-day event was presented by the Maui County Healthcare Partnership (MCHP) and Maui Economic Development Board’s (MEDB) STEMworks™. MCHP, originally launched in March 2017, is an alliance of healthcare organizations across Maui County− coordinated and staffed by MEDB. Together, they are motivated by the shared needs of the County’s numerous participating healthcare providers.

“The state of Hawaii has a shortage of physicians right now and an even greater shortage in most other health professions,” said Lalaine Pasion, STEMworks™ Project Manager. “The MCHP event introduced Maui County middle- and high-schoolers to the healthcare systems within their communities.” 7 out of the 130 students were eligible for the STEMworks Internship Healthcare in partnership with the Maui County Healthcare Partnership.

Fueling their curiosity for possible careers, the students toured local healthcare facilities including Maui Memorial Medical Center (MMMC), Hale Makua, the Pacific Cancer Institute, and the University of Hawaii Maui College Nursing Program. Throughout the event, mentors and volunteers created inspiring and memorable experiences for them. Participants learned essential life skills with a variety of medical instruments and hands-on practices. They met with patients, took vital signs, and learned how to cast a broken arm. Additionally, students joined a public health team designed to combat malaria around the world. They learned how to extract DNA from a strawberry and how it relates to vaccinations.

The final day of the Summer Adventures in Healthcare experience featured six hours of CPR, First Aid, AED, and HIPAA training and certification. This valuable hands-on experience provided us with skills we can always use to save lives. STEMworks Intern, Kazzandra Anthon said,” I’m thankful to MCHP and MEDB for this opportunity to learn about possible healthcare careers right here in Hawaii.”

We kicked-off this year’s STEMworks™ internship on Thursday, June 6, 2019! Our STEMworks™ interns from across the state were able to have one-on-one conversations with 30 industry professionals. They were encouraged to push their limits by setting their goals higher and higher! They were also able to talk to business professionals while expanding their network!

“Branding” Yourself!

Traci Rosario, National Board Certified Teacher “Branding” oneself is being able to capture the attention of your future employer with your cover letter and resume. This is an important skill to have that can help you advance to the next level of the hiring process. STEMworks™ interns learned the importance of appearance, proper communication, maintaining professional relationships, body language and nonverbal communications. Make your best first impression to anyone!

Our interns have a wide variety of interests pertaining to STEM which helped them when it was time to pair up and revise each other’s resumes. With their different strengths and weaknesses, they were able to help each other on writing, designing, and encouraging one another to not be afraid to show their skills on their resumes!

Learning the Engineering Design Process!

Our interns were also introduced to Nepris! With the help of Nepris, Moloka’i intern Peyton Gillespie and Maui intern Kalila Philips wowed their “real life interviews” from experts like Tiffany R. Paige, J.D., from Mississippi College School of Law, and Anthony Russo from Capital One! The mock interviews provided our interns new opportunities of connecting our young people to high level companies’ human resources departments who provided useful feedback to the individual and all our interns.

Challenges arise in any situation, whether on the job, at school, or simply at home. It is our responsibility to produce solutions to solve the problem! Through 8 different groups, our interns created skits that demonstrated the different steps of the Engineering Design Process, facilitated by STEMworks™ Program Manager, Melinda White.

STEMworks TM provides a Dynamic Career and College Awareness Webinar called STEMworks TM “Live”. These interactions are designed to complement the internship experience while preparing students for a successful future.

What is a vital record? A vital record is “a record of a life event: birth, marriage, civil union, and death” according to Kalani Holokai from the Hawaii State Department of Health. These records are stored in Honolulu and you can request for a copy online! Kalani walked the STEMworks™ cohort through the Vital Records Portal and highlighted important pieces of information the Department of Health needs to fulfill your request.

LEHIWA ALBINO MENTAL HEALTH INTERN, NAPU’UWAI HEALTH CENTER MOLOKAI HIGH SCHOOL, MOLOKAI

#EDUCATIONISKEY My name is Lehiwa Albino! I interned at Na Pu’uwai for my STEMworks™ Internship. Napu’uwai is a native hawaiian health care system that provides services for Molokai communities. They offer free lomilomi, an adult day care, counseling, and a lot more. What I enjoyed about my STEMworks™ Internship is that we got to work with our kupuna. When we go in to the day care they are happy to see us and it makes me feel good. The project that I did was about Teen Health. I chose this project because I wanted to do something that our generation could relate to and it interested me.

My STEMworks™ Internship project is on teen health. I came up with five topics that teens struggle with. The topics I chose were suicide, sex/STD, alcohol/drug use, stress, and anxiety. I am hoping to educate people on these topics. During my STEMworks™ Internship I developed many new skills such as learning how to work in a professional setting.

Being a STEMworks™ Intern means taking on responsibility. We learned how to manage time and be responsible for our homework and weekly reports.

PARKER ALMEIDA

RESEARCH AND ANALYTICS INTERN, MEDB FOCUS MAUI NUI SEABURY HALL, MAUI

#FIRSTTIMEFOREVERYTHING Aloha, my name is Parker Almeida, and I interned at MEDB working with Focus Maui Nui. Focus Maui Nui is a community outreach nonprofit. I helped my host company by doing the more tedious work and organizing data so it is easier to present and read. I helped my community by organizing their responses into spreadsheets and graphs so they can be presented to the Maui County Council. My favorite part of my internship is getting to make a difference in the community. In the future I would like to focus on cleaning the oceans and making our community a cleaner and better place.

My main STEMworks™ project is organizing and adding new information into Spreadsheets for the Maui County Data book. I had to clean up the data taken from the West Maui Affordable Housing survey and the 2016-2018 Maui Fair surveys using Survey Monkey and Excel. Then I generated and analyzed graphs. The purpose of generating graphs was to analyze percentages and changes on data based on things like location, ethnicity, etc.. With the West Maui Affordable Housing Survey, we used the graphs and data to present a statement at the West Maui Affordable Housing County Council meeting.

Being a STEMworks™ Intern means a lot to me as it helps me get involved with my community. Being in the STEMworks™ Internship Program also showed me the value in the people behind-the-scenes of a small nonprofit organization.

KAZZANDRA ANTON OUTREACH WORKER, MALAMA I KE OLA HEALTH CENTER H.P. BALDWIN HIGH SCHOOL, MAUI

#BELIEVETOACHIEVE Aloha! My name is Kazzandra Anton. I interned at Malama I Ke Ola Health Center, a community health clinic who’s staff works diligently to provide affordable healthcare to Maui’s underserved population. Thanks to my amazing mentors, I was able to expand my knowledge on diabetes as well as a variety of other medical conditions and understand the workflow of different healthcare workers. My favorite part of my internship was the opportunity to expand my network and meet many astounding people who are truly passionate about what they do, which included outreach with Risa and patient care with Dr. Laird. As I continue my journey delving into the medical industry, I hope to become a biomedical researcher and conduct experiments using stem cells and gene editing tools such as CRISPR-Cas9 to benefit our health.

As a STEMworks™ Intern at Malama I Ke Ola Health Center, my project was on the coordination of care elements around diabetes, which included outreach with Risa and patient care with Dr. Laird. While working on my project, I learned how to navigate through electronic medical records on Centricity, properly use a stethoscope, take patient’s vitals, and how to identify and control diabetes. I was also able to improve my communication skills, expand my knowledge, and prepare myself for my future in the medical industry.

Being a STEMworks™ Intern means that you are driven to learn, gain new experience, and take advantage of the opportunities that can help benefit your future and your growth as a person, even if it means going out of your comfort zone. But, the most important thing is to believe in yourself and not to doubt in your abilities because you will never be able to achieve your dreams if you don’t believe in yourself.

STEPHANIE BADILLO WELLNESS COACH ASSISTANT, LANAI COMMUNITY HEALTH CENTER

LANAI HIGH AND ELEMENTARY SCHOOL, LANAI

#STEMINTERN2019 Hello, my name is Stephanie Badillo and I interned at the Lanai Community Health Center. Lanai Community Health Center provides health services to the people in the community by providing health and wellness services. One thing that I enjoyed about this internship was working with all the different departments within the Health Center and networking with everyone. My project is to incorporate technology into the fitness classes. With this project LCHC and I hope to make it quicker and more efficient for the current and future wellness coaches to input and keep track of data. We also hope to make it an easier way for participants to sign into classes. In the future I would like to be in a career where I get to help people like possibly become a nurse or a doctor.

My STEMworks™ project is a way to turn a paper and pencil sign in system to an online system using Rhinofit. I used a lot of different Google Applications to keep my thoughts and progress organized. During my STEMworks™ internship I learned that it is important to be able to adapt, especially since I had the opportunity to work with many different people who do many different things.

Being a STEMworks™ Intern means being exposed to many opportunities. Throughout this entire STEMworks™ internship I have been so lucky to not only meet, network, and strengthen bonds with people I also got to be part of many different projects.

MARIGOLD BALDONADO CHIEF VIDEO EDITOR, GOODFELLOW BROS. MAUI HIGH SCHOOL, MAUI

#INVESTINGINTHEFUTURE Aloha! My name is Marigold Baldonado and I interned at Goodfellow Bros. Goodfellow is a construction company here on Maui who shapes our community one project at a time. At Goodfellow, I was assigned to help my mentor and my fellow intern Jeremy with GBI’s new training courses. I also got the chance to help out AJ Nithianantham with editing a project video. Being able to tell what day it was every week was probably my favorite part of the internship. This summer is a memorable one, and I am thankful for the opportunities given to me. In the future, I want to become a film editor and get my hands on post-production. This internship contributed to that dream, and I am grateful.

For my STEMworks™ project, I utilized Adobe After Effects and Final Cut Pro to animate and produce projects assigned to me. When I wasn’t editing I got to learn office etiquette and skills through Litmos Dojo. Through Litmost and Rise 360 I was able to create multiple training course and modules for GBI. Being a STEMworks™ Intern means surrendering your summer to hard work and dedication in hopes to gain skills and other knowledge. It also means taking every opportunity you have and making things happen instead of waiting for things to happen.

LLOYD BEDIAMOL DIGITAL MEDIA INTERN, INTENSE MOTORSPORTS MAUI MAUI HIGH SCHOOL, MAUI

#STEMWORKSTIMETOSHINE Hi my name is Lloyd Bediamol and I interned at Intense Motorsports Maui(IMM).

IMM is and automotive company and the do things like alignments, lift kits, tire and rim changes and much more. What I enjoy about doing this internship was learning about the the tools at my disposal like Linkedin Learning, Canva, and Adobe Premiere Rush. I really enjoyed doing my projects because I got to design t-shirts, and make their ads for them. In the future, I want to be doing things along the lines of graphic design and maybe learn how to do animation.

My STEMworks™ projects consisted of creating ads, t-shirt designs, and taking photos for IMM. The softwares that I mainly used were Adobe Photoshop and Adobe Illustrator. Some things that I learned from Joseph, my mentor, was to keep t-shirt designs simple and in a t-shirt design use 2-3 colors because of the cost.

Being a STEMworks™ Intern to me means opportunity. This STEMworks™ Internship gives us, the STEMworks™ Interns, hands on experiences that will help us get in to the career of our choice. Being a STEMworks™ Intern has helped me sharpen my skills and has also showed me how to use more tools that I will use.

CELINA BRITO

AGRICULTURAL TECHNICIAN & AGRONOMY TECHNICIAN ASSISTANT, MAHI PONO

KING KEKAULIKE HIGH SCHOOL, MAUI

#GATEOPENER Alohe e, my name is Celina Keala Brito. I interned at Mahi Pono for my STEMworks™ Internship. Mahi Pono is a farming company that is transforming approximately 41,000 acres of vacant former sugar cane land into a thriving diversified agriculture. I had the opportunity to work with Foraging and Rotational Crop Operations and Ranch Operations. What I appreciate from this STEMworks™ experience is the many sides to maintaining a prosperous agriculture beyond planting a few plants and running heavy equipment. Now I feel I can better plan my education pathway to support my goals to advance sustainable agriculture and protect our natural resources.

My STEMworks™ Internship project was to assist the Forage and Rotational Crops Manager with soil testing and forage sampling. We use many tools to extract the samples, dry test and analyze data.

Being a STEMworks™ Intern helped me to connect what I am learning in school with real life experience. It opened my mind to new ideas and more appreciation for learning.

JOSIAH CASTILLO MEDIA INTERN, MEDB AMOS MAUI HIGH SCHOOL, MAUI

What I enjoyed about my STEMworks™ Internship is the hands-on work experience that it provided. My project was to make a 3-4 minute video to commemorate the 20th anniversary of the AMOS Conference. I was tasked to do so in After Effects and it was very challenging. In the future, I want to pursue a career in cinematography.

I used After Effects for my project to do motion graphics for my mentor’s videos. What I learned from this STEMworks™ Internship is how to better work with clients and that communication is the most important role of working on a project.

Being a STEMworks™ Intern means that I am further prepared for the future jobs that I may take. Giving me a hands-on work experience taught me valuable lessons and how to interact in the community.

#BRINGINGIDEASTOLIFE Aloha, my name is Joanne Chi and I interned at 3D Innovations. 3D Innovation is a prototyping and product design company on Oahu that aids other individuals or companies develop their ideas from concept to product. I’ve worked on multiple projects during my internship ranging from creating advertising graphics, manufacturing and distribution research, to 3D modeling and design.

In the future, I hope to combine my interest with engineering and medicine to pursue a STEM career.

My STEMworks™ projects consisted of creating digital advertising graphics, compiling information about manufacturing and distribution, and starting 3D modeling and design. I created advertising graphics on Canva, used google sheets to compile distribution information, and learned how to use a 3D modeling software called SolidWorks for the first time ever.

Being a STEMworks™ Intern represents an amazing opportunity to explore STEM related careers and endeavors. I’ve had the honor of exploring my interests and gaining job experience while still in high school.

GRAPHIC DESIGNER & VIDEOGRAPHER, CYANOTECH KEALAKEHE HIGH SCHOOL, BIG ISLAND

#PURSUINGMYPASSION Aloha! I am Kea Clebsch, and I interned at Cyanotech as a graphic designer and videographer. Cyanotech is a 90-acre farm on the Big Island that cultivates Hawaiian microalgae. Their two products, BioAstin and Hawaiian Spirulina, are made from microalgae that is sustainably grown and processed on the farm and sold all over the world. I was welcomed onto the marketing team to help communicate to the public what the company does and who they are. I absolutely loved my internship at Cyanotech, and I really enjoyed the time I spent there. The farm was just such an inspiring place to be, and I learned a lot from the work I was doing. I found a strong passion for videography through this experience, and it inspired me to continue growing as a videographer and editor and to pursue it in the future. In the future, I see myself making videos that raise environmental awareness or that bring exposure to non-profits that are making a difference in the world.

My STEMworks™ Internship projects were to create two 30 second commercials for their products that they could put on Amazon and to storyboard a video that tells the story of their farm. I digitally storyboarded the videos, presented them to the marketing team, filmed footage, and then edited the videos. I also got to create a t-shirt design for the company’s farm tours, Through these projects, I really improved my videography skills through as well as technical editing skills in Final Cut Pro. Being a STEMworks™ Intern means taking advantage of meaningful opportunities. As an intern, I have learned about a work environment at a very young age, I have made connections with people in the work industry, I have found a career path that I am passionate about, and I’ve become a better version of myself.

#LEARNBYDOING Hello, I’m Ethan Covello and I interned at Pacific Point. Pacific Point is a quickly growing salesforce consulting firm that helps their clients implement salesforce into their companies. My STEMworks™ project was to create a slide master on Powerpoint, which allows for Pacific Point employees to create presentations using the template.

The aspect I enjoyed most about my internship was being a part of a real company and seeing all of the nuances that go into making the company function. In the future I would like to get a degree in mechanical engineering and use that degree to build and design products that will further humanity.

Throughout my STEMworks™ Internship I mainly used PowerPoint, because my project was based on this program. But in order to remedy the certain lack of features on PowerPoint, I used Adobe Photoshop, Microsoft Excel, and Microsoft Word. Through this internship, I gained skills that will help me present, network, use technology, and understand and implement feedback.

Being a STEMworks™ Intern means that I’m gaining real world experience that will better prepare me for my future. It means that through working, I’m developing new skills that will further me in my career, such as networking skills, technological skills, and presentation skills.

#COMPUTERSARETHEFUTURE Hello, my name is Dalson Cua, and I am interned at Kukui IT. Kukui IT is a company that specializes in implementing information technology for private and small companies.

Their main focus is to solve their client’s issues with solutions that are effective and costefficient while also providing great customer service. The thing I enjoy most about my STEMworks™ Internship is that all the work I did was hands-on, as my project was to set up new computers for teachers and students at different schools on Kauai. What I liked about the STEMworks™ Internship was working with the equipment, in this case, the computers, rather than just shadowing my intern and only watching what they do. In the future, I want to be somewhere on the west coast as some sort of computer engineer.

My STEMworks™ Internship project was to set up brand new laptops for different schools around Kauai by cloning them and making sure that the laptop is ready before the school year begins. These laptops would be used by students and teachers, but for teachers, we transferred their data from their old laptop to their new one so no important data was lost. Some tools that I used during this time included CloneZilla, Ninite, and I got to become a lot more familiar working with Windows 10 overall.

Being a STEMworks™ Intern means that I am lucky that I was given this wonderful opportunity to get a close-up look at something I might consider pursuing one day.

Being an Intern was an honor as I got to expand my network and got to meet so many great people, while also preparing myself for the future.

#WONDERFULTIME Hello, my name is Chae’nel Deluna. I interned at Na Pu’uwai, a Native Hawaiian Health Care System. They help Hawaiians with their health conditions. During my STEMworks™ Internship I really enjoyed communicating with other people. Talking to other people really helped me improve on my communication skills. I got to interview many people and learn about their jobs and what they do. I also enjoyed creating a jeopardy game.

The jeopardy game is a fun and creative way for people to learn about teen health issues. This STEMworks™ Internship gave me an idea of what it will be like when I start working. In the future I want to go to college. I’m hoping to be a nurse or a dental hygienist.

My STEMworks™ Internship project is on teen health issues. Lehiwa and I created a PowerPoint using Prezi. We also created a jeopardy game for the up and coming 9th graders. When we go back to school we will play this jeopardy game with them. We want them to learn about teen health in a fun and creative way.

Being a STEMworks™ Intern means that I got chosen for this great opportunity to develop new and professional skills, gain job experience. I got to learn about the different types of careers out there, and to also prepare myself for my future.

I enjoyed my STEMworks™ Internship experience because Goodfellow Bros. is a great company and this experience provided me with an opportunity to learn something new and experience what it is like to be in the workforce. I always knew that I wanted to pursue a STEM related career, and this experience has given me even more insight into the field of engineering.

The goal of my STEMworks™ project is to assemble a company training program for the newer employees, whether it be through videos, slides, or courses. While doing so, I have learned how to use Microsoft Visio for the creation of flowcharts.

I’ve also learne Litmos to organize the data and assign courses and Storyline 360 to create captivating video/slide presentations.

Being a STEMworks™ Intern means possibilities. There is so much things to learn and with the right opportunity, the possibilities of improvement are endless.

#REACHINGNEWHEIGHTS Hello, my name is Dominic Flavin. I interned at Malama I Ke Ola Health Center.

They are a community clinic funded by the government to provide health services to those in Maui’s community that need the help. I enjoyed meeting new people and learning new things. At the clinic, I helped Dr. Russell talk to patients about the need of colon cancer screening. I aspire to be a doctor of myself in the future, so this internship was a huge step in the right direction.

My STEMworks™ project here at MIKO has included 2 main things, those being talking to patients about getting colorectal screening, and creating a pamphlet about colon cancer. I’ve also been helping out Dr. Russell and his team as well as learning about things concerning health outside of my project. I’ve learned to use a new program called Centricity as well.

Being a STEMworks™ Intern means that I can learn about things that I’m interested in outside of school. It also means I can meet new people and make new connections in the healthcare field.

#ALWAYSWORKINGTOGETHER Aloha! My name is Peyton Gillespie and I interned with Hui O Kuapa at Keawanui Fishpond. This being my second year with STEMworks™, my internship involved the continuation of mini-projects that I had helped start last year. These mini projects include but are not limited to: starting up and running an oyster farm, dealing with an invasive jellyfish problem, and building a mini fishpond to be used as an outdoor science classroom to study the ecosystem. I enjoyed the responsibility of restoring and maintaining a cultural site; it really gave me the feeling that my work was significant and made an impact. In the future, I see myself being anything from an actor to a lawyer or a talk show host, but I do know for certain that whatever I become, the skills I have learned through the STEMworks™ program will be with me all the way.

During my STEMworks™ Internship, I worked with groups, volunteers and gained leadership, public speaking, farming, and natural resource management skillsets.

Qubedup is a company that has created a project around my Graphic Design skills to design shirts and a logo for a new company. During my STEMworks™ Internship, I have learned new skills in creating designs that are more geometric compared to the free-flowing work I illustrate on the daily basis. I have also learned how to develop new fonts within a program called Procreate to design mock logo designs.

#DESIGNABETTERFUTURE Aloha, my name is Alex Macaraeg! I interned at Mahi Pono for my STEMworks™ Internship. Mahi Pono is a farming company committed to transforming Central Maui into a thriving hub of diversified agriculture. During my STEMworks™ project, I enjoyed how different it is from your typical engineering job by going out into the field instead of just staying in the office all day. In the future, I hope to become a robotics engineer.

My STEMworks™ project was to design and create a front guard for Mahi Pono’s new tractors. The tractor guard is supposed to protect the radiator and the front axle of the tractor without hindering the movement or accessibility of the tractor. I first had to measure dimensions for the tractor guard, then had to CAD it out. Once the dimensions were measured, I had to design the guard. After the design was approved, I would move on to fabricate the guard and hopefully attach it onto the tractor.

Being a STEMworks™ Intern gives me the opportunity to experience the workforce in STEM. This STEMworks™ experience allows me to apply my skills to issues in real life and help others.

KALILA PHILLIPS AUTOMATION ENGINEER, BAYER H.P. BALDWIN HIGH SCHOOL, MAUI

#JUSTFIGURINGTHINGSOUT Aloha, my name is Kalila Phillips and I interned at Bayer Maui. Bayer is an agrobiotechnology company that is all about science for a better life. The company breeds different types of corn to satisfy customer needs worldwide to partake in relieving world hunger. I enjoyed learning about agricultural based technology and how this knowledge is integrated into modern day farming.

I also enjoyed experiencing my first work environment and being able to participate in team projects as well as working independently. My STEMworks™ project is about water conservation and I hope that it can successfully help farmers use their water responsibly worldwide. During my STEMworks™ internship, I got to learn more about programming microcontrollers in circuit boards and learning different programming languages such as Python and C++. I have always preferred working on hardware over software but now I can confidently say that I enjoy doing both. I got to learn about SCADA/HMI which are design software for data monitoring. In the future, I hope to work in medical aspects with technology to help create a better world and future.

For my STEMworks™ Internship project, I created a screen using an HMI that displays radio transmission feedback for the irrigation controllers in the farm to the gateway. This project prepared me to know the fundamentals of Python and data designing. After that, I created two weather stations equipped with a multitude of sensors and a client based screen that displays the data as well as the ability to automatically shut off irrigation controllers if an x amount of rain occurred.

#LEARNTOCREATE Aloha! My name is Joyce Rosabia and I interned at Cyanotech Corporation, the producers of microalgae for its products BioAstin and Hawaiian Spirulina. I enjoyed almost every aspect of the STEMworks™ Internship opportunity, from designing for various purposes, to saying good morning to my fellow team members, to eating lunch with my partner Kea. Most importantly, I enjoyed the continuous learning and refinement of my skills in fields I was already familiar with and new fields I would have never thought I’d have a chance to work in. Although I do not see myself in a similar position I interned as, I do see myself utilizing my new found appreciation for the arts and refined skills in the future.

During my time as a STEMworks™ Intern at Cyanotech, I designed graphics and images for T-shirts, a Hawaiian Spirulina stamp, social media posts, and concept designed a gallery wall space for the office. As the social media & graphic designer, I utilized Canva to design posts, Adobe Photoshop & Illustrator for graphics, and HootSuite for scheduling and social media analysis. Although I was familiar with Canva and Adobe Software, I became more efficient in these platforms by utilizing templates and presets and using HootSuite to determine how design and the time of day affect post activity. I have developed a new creative mindset that places what viewers would like to see rather than simple aesthetics, confidence when communicating and presenting in front of others, and an understanding of the importance of preparation and research - especially when planning future social media posts.

Being a STEMworks™ Intern means being open to continuous learning to better prepare yourself for the future. As an intern, you have been presented an opportunity to learn and create, and it is our job not to let that go to waste!

#OUTREACHFORTHESTARS Hi! My name is Amanda Schiff, and I interned at Canada France Hawaii Telescope (CFHT) as a graphic designer/videographer. I worked primarily at the telescope headquarters in Kamuela on the Big Island. CFHT is an astronomical observatory located on the summit of Mauna Kea dedicated to providing state of the art observations of the universe for astronomers across the world. My STEMworks™ projects all related to the outreach aspect of the company, and included t-shirt design, creating informal handouts, typesetting business cards, and creating staff profiling videos to be posted on social media. These projects helped CFHT with their company branding and community involvement. In the future, I would like to have a career that is related to computer science, ideally with a focus on graphics/web design.

My STEMworks™ project primarily related to creating materials to be utilized by the outreach department at CFHT. One of my projects was using Adobe video editing and animation software to create a series of staff introductions for social media. I also worked with Adobe Photoshop and Illustrator to create various graphics for my host company, such as a trifold handout that briefed the capabilities of the instruments at my host company.

Being a STEMworks™ Intern means having the opportunity to make a positive impact on my community and the world around me. I get to use my skillset to work on real, significant projects while still in high school, which also gives me the opportunity to get a head start on planning what it is I want to do for my career.

TAYLER SIMINSKI QUALITY AND RISK MANAGER INTERN, MĀLAMA I KE OLA BRYN MAWR COLLEGE, MAUI

#SERVINGTHEUNDERSERVED Aloha mai kākou, my name is Tayler Siminski and I interned at Mālama i ke Ola, Maui’s community health clinic located in the old OOKA building. The clinic was founded in 1993 to help Maui better serve underserved populations. During my short time at Mālama i ke Ola, I have been able to see first-hand how many lives have been, and will continue to be, impacted by this clinic. look forward to the prospect of coming back and working here as a physician one day and providing equal opportunity healthcare to Maui County.

Only 10-20% of healthcare is actually health related—the rest of a person’s care is influenced by social factors. Yet, in the U.S., there is only one standardized form to collect this data: the Protocol for Responding to and Assessing Patients’ Assets, Risks, and Experiences (PRAPARE). These “social determinants” are a new idea in the world of healthcare. My goal for my STEMworks™ project was to help close that gap. I worked with my mentors, Irene Bala, Mary Martin, and Dr. John Vaz to pull reports on patients in i2i and Centricity. Newer patients were given intakes with SDoH questions, so for them, I transcribed the data into their EHR. For established patients, I flagged their charts so that they would be given forms and asked the questions at their next visit. There are many questions asked, but I focused primarily on housing stability, access to adequate food and water, and access to transportation. This data collection, in particular, housing status, was very important to the clinic because they are currently working on getting a grant from HMSA. Being a STEMworks™ Intern is about growth and personal development. It’s about opportunity and understanding how I can better impact my community. At the same time, it is also about teamwork, and uplifting my fellow interns and being excited about their STEMworks™ projects.

The STEM field is innately competitive, so being part of a cohort that embraces the success of their peers and seeks to grow by learning from the experiences of others is a refreshing environment to be a part of.

ARCGIS STORYMAP DESIGNER & FIELD INTERN, MAUI NUI SEABIRD RECOVERY PROJECT

KING KEKAULIKE HIGH SCHOOL, MAUI

#STRIVEFORMORE Aloha, My name is Kali Grace Spalding and I interned at Maui Nui Seabird Recovery Project (MNSRP). The concept of MNSRP was founded by Dr. Fern Duvall, a current Department of Forestry and Wildlife (DOFAW) Science Leader. Dr. Duvall hired Jay Penniman, the current Project Manager of MNSRP, based off of Jay’s previous experience with seabirds off the coast of San Francisco. MNSRP hopes to provide safe, secure land for seabirds who reside in Maui Nui to live and breed. Additionally, they aim to provide a home to birds who are displaced as the Northwestern Hawaiian Islands (NWHI) sink below the sea. I enjoyed absolutely everything about my STEMworks™ internship. I worked in the office as well as out in the field, so I’ve learned a lot about new technology and the land. The MNSRP staff are the most brilliant people that I’ve ever had the honor of meeting. They’re all so incredibly knowledgeable and I’ve learned so much from them. I wouldn’t trade my experiences here at MNSRP for the world. After spending the summer with them, they’ve broadened my horizons greatly and I could see myself in wildlife conservation in the future.

During my time at MNSRP, I expanded my knowledge of ArcGIS and learned about various technologies used in the field. Jenni Learned, my wonderful mentor, truly taught me so much about different applications for GIS. Jenni, along with the other staff at MNSRP, also taught me about burrow scopes, song meter collectors, and much more.

Being a STEMworks™ Intern means being a leader of the future. The STEMworks™ Interns are incredibly fortunate to have been given this wonderful opportunity, so we should all use it to our advantage and help serve others in the community who may not have had the same opportunities as us.

EVAN SPARKMAN VIDEOGRAPHER, MAUI FOOD INNOVATION CENTER UNIVERSITY OF HAWAII MAUI COLLEGE, MAUI

#PLANAHEAD Hello, I am Evan Sparkman and I intered at Maui Food Innovation Center (MFIC), MFIC’s mission is to build a stronger Maui Niu by supporting local food businesses. My project was about making a video about Justin Orr, the owner of HI spice. I want to be at either a videography company on Maui or freelancing some videos for non-profit groups and showing it to the public, to show them how much they do and how the community can help.

My STEMworks™ project during my internship is to create an “A Day in the Life of Justin Orr” video. I interviewed him to see what his day to day life is like along with his highs and lows. We chose Justin Orr since he is one of the newer graduates of MFIC, and his business is starting to go off. I am making two different videos one to be posted on MFIC site and one to be posted on Social Media. I am helping MFIC by showing that one of the more popular, local business originally came from my host company.

Being a STEMworks™ Intern is helping me to further my career to become a videographer, which means a lot to me. It is important that I was a part of the STEMworks™ Internship because it is helping me grow my skills with full-on public videos.

BREANNA MARIE TAGUCHI MEDIA AND ENGAGEMENT INTERN, BLUE ZONES PROJECT CENTRAL MAUI

#CAPTURINGSTORIES Aloha, I’m Breanna Marie Taguchi, and I interned at Blue Zones Project Central Maui. Blue Zones Project is a community-led well-being initiative brought to Hawaii by HMSA. With a mission of a healthier and happier Hawaii, we work with organizations to implement best practices from the Blue Zones - areas in the world where people live the longest and happiest. I enjoyed that we were always always doing something new. I never thought I would be learning so much about healthy and active lifestyles, working in the garden at Wailuku Elementary, and learning so many new things that I wouldn’t have learned if not for this internship. In the future, I am considering going into the cinematography field. From the STEMworks™ Internship, I’ve also been thinking about marketing or advertising. I overall in the future want to capture and share the stories of those from around the world.

My STEMworks™ Internship project was to help capture the stories of businesses that have transformed. I filmed videos of transformation, meaning I filmed stories of companies around Maui and saw the changes they’ve made to become a healthier and a happier worksite. While completing these projects, I learned many things that I didn’t know about storytelling and used those new tactics and skills I’ve learned to complete these projects.

Being a STEMworks™ Intern means so much to me, and I am so grateful to have had this opportunity. While working this internship, I learned new skills, met new people, explored new career fields, worked in new environments, and overall just had a fantastic summer and would do it again.

JENNA TAKATA ENGINEER, KAUAI ISLAND UTILITY COOPERATIVE KAUAI HIGH SCHOOL, KAUAI

#EMBRACETHEUNCOMFORTABLE Aloha! My name is Jenna Takata and I interned with the Kauai Island Utility Cooperative on the island of Kauai. KIUC is Kauai’s electricity provider and I worked on programming protective relays to enhance grid stability. I personally enjoyed the challenge of learning about the advanced electrical concepts that come into play with protective engineering. I will be attending Rice University in the fall and I plan on continuing to pursue a career in Electrical Engineering.

I hope to someday aid in our transition to renewable, sustainable energy.

My STEMworks™ Internship project focused on the role of a protective relay in electrical transmission systems. My mentor, Cameron Kruse, taught me about the many components involved in relay programming and how engineers keep the grid safe. I learned how to communicate with the SEL relays using Tera Term and AcSELerator, and I worked with Cameron to come up with settings.

Being a STEMworks™ Intern meant an opportunity to grow. I now understand my strengths and weaknesses and I was able to work on my technical skills as well as my “soft skills” throughout this internship.

ZACH TEAGARDEN COMPUTER SCIENTIST, INSTITUTE FOR ASTRONOMY KING KEKAULIKE HIGH SCHOOL, MAUI

#STEMISTHEFUTURE Hi, my name is Zach Teagarden and I interned at the Institute For Astronomy (IFA).

Here, scientists research many celestial bodies and astronomical phenomena. I enjoyed learning about the work that established astronomers do. I am glad that I was given the opportunity to enrich my understanding of the universe and make valuable connections.

I hope that I can use the connections that I have made and the information I have accumulated from this internship to aid my future career in STEM. During my STEMworks™ Internship, I had two objectives. The first of which was to write a Python program for Dr. JD Armstrong which he would use to optimize the process of decompressing data. My second task was to work on my research project with a central focus to test the theory of Modified Newtonian Dynamics (MOND). This supposition states that in certain situations, F=MA does not hold. MOND is an alternate explanation to the widely accepted theory that dark matter accounts for missing mass in the Universe.

Being a STEMworks™ Intern is valuable because it allows students like me to learn about what it is like to go into a particular STEM related field and see what industry professionals do for work. Being a STEMworks™ Intern takes work and dedication in order to fully understand exactly what it is like to enter the STEM career field.

#LIVETOLEARN Hi, my name is Allyna Teppang, I interned at the Lana’i Community Health Center on Lana’i (LCHC). LCHC is a health center that offers health care to the families on Lana’i ranging from physical and mental well being. During my STEMworks™ internship at LCHC, I was able to learn and shadow medical and dental assistants and wellness coaches. I liked how we were able to see different parts of the health center and also be a part of it. With my STEMworks™ project we hope to help give ideas of healthy eating, more use of the health classes at LCHC and educate about the decrease of cultural foods in the community. In the future, I hope to have a career as a nurse in the state of Hawai’i.

For my STEMworks™ Internship project, I needed to create the E Ola Kino Survey, to give to the students of Lana’i High and Elementary School. We would be asking the students about healthy eating, physical activities and cultural foods. I got to use Google Slides, Google Forms and Zoom in order to complete my STEMworks™ project.

Being a STEMworks™ Intern means being part of the movement towards the future where technology becomes more advanced. You are going to become part of the group of people that will change technology.

BRENT TORRES CIVIL ENGINEER INTERN, SSFM INTERNATIONL, INC. KAUAI HIGH SCHOOL, KAUAI

#BALANCEDLIFE Aloha! My name is Brent Torres. I interned at SSFM International on Kauai. SSFM International is a civil engineering consulting firm that provides services to the U.S and overseas. During my STEMworks™ internship, I have been exposed to both the administrative and hands-on practices of civil engineering. During field work, I followed an inspector as they complete their daily construction inspections. I got to observe recent developments that aim at urbanizing our rural county, while preserving its historic roots. In the office, I get to practice the administrative side of civil engineering. This includes reading the Requirements and Specifications book that serve as the encyclopedia of each project. This book allows me to have a better understanding of reading construction plans. Further, I was tasked with completing construction management documents. At SSFM, I have learned to achieve a balance between work and life. I will remember this lesson as I aspire to become an electrical engineer in the future.

My STEMworks™ project has led me to work with all documents within SSFM which then are documented within a construction management software called Newforma. Further, in order to sort through construction documents and file these forms, I have used the software programs Google Sheets and Microsoft Excel. I also used Bluebeam Revu, which is a PDF document reader and editor similar to Adobe Software.

Being a STEMworks™ Intern is unique from the rest in their drive to solve problems within their community through STEM disciplines.

TRENTON UCHIMA ARCHIVE AND INVENTORY SPECIALIST, MAHI PONO KING KEKAULIKE HIGH SCHOOL, MAUI

#MAPSCANNER Aloha, My name is Trenton Uchima and I interned at Mahi Pono. At Mahi Pono, they manage the water resources here on the Island of Maui. I really enjoyed learning about the history of the irrigation ditches that help to supply the island with water. My STEMworks™ project was to digitize old maps that Mahi Pono had in storage. My project will be very useful to the company as this will preserve the documents and make them more accessible for internal use. In the future, I plan to study engineering so that I can be a part of an engineering feat such as the irrigation systems.

My STEMworks™ Internship project at Mahi Pono is to digitize and archive the numerous documents of the Irrigation Ditches that they maintain. Additionally, I had learned how to use Google Earth to create a digital map of the numerous reservoirs around the island.

Being a STEMworks™ Intern is a once in a lifetime opportunity that has allowed me to learn and see things very few individuals are able to see. This opportunity is a valuable experience and one that I will never forget.

JORDAN VAUGHN DATA ANALYST, HAWAII COMMUNITY FOUNDATION MAUI HIGH SCHOOL, MAUI

#BROADENYOURHORIZONS Hello! My name is Jordan Vaughn, and I interned at the Hawaii Community Foundation (HCF). HCF is a tax exempt nonprofit, autonomous, publically supported, institution with a long term goal of building permanent funding for multiple charitable interests for the benefit of residents. This, for example, would be providing scholarships to college students. I enjoyed being able to look at this data in a whole new way than previously, seeing the trends really had my gears turning within my head. I absolutely loved making graphs and seeing how they played out. In the future, I want to pursue Theatre and Astronomy, however this internship has sparked a new passion which might make its way into my future plans.

My STEMworks™ Internship project for the Hawaii Community Foundation was I analyzed data, made graphs, and created brochures. I did this for both MEDB as well as the scholarship program. This helped them better understand their demographic as well as persuade others with their numbers.

Being a STEMworks™ Intern has given me an outlet to let both my creativity and analytical side intermingle. To me, interning is an opportunity to expand one’s self and seize new, brighter opportunities.
