As the school year ends and summer vacations begin, all good educators review the past year, analyze test results and then plan for the next school year.

Typically, teachers are rarely satisfied with results.

This year at St. Edmund, the end of year feeling is the same and very different.

While we take pride in the fact that so many of our seniors were accepted to and, in many instances, received scholarships from their firstchoice college and in the fact that many of our students scored very well on IB, AP and regents examinations, there is the feeling that one more student could have achieved more. The difference this year is that we have recognized very clearly that success is not measured merely by college acceptances or test scores, but by the growth of the entire person. While

we have always known this at some level, the tragic and untimely death of John Malazzo has focused our attention on what is really important.

John died the week before graduation where the band traditionally plays. Two seniors stepped forward and volunteered to conduct the group. When told this would be difficult as they would be processing in and out with their fellow graduates while the band was playing and while dealing with their own grief, they responded instantaneously, “We won’t walk. It’s not about us, it’s about Mr. Malazzo.” When the student body was called together as a family to be

informed of Mr. Malazzo ‘s death, scores and scores of students asked various faculty members to go over to the Church with them and pray.

At the wake, dozens and dozens of alumni came to pay their respects. While there, all were concerned not with themselves, but with comforting Mrs. Malazzo and the extended Malazzo family.

One of John’s musician friends complimented the faculty, to me on how well and naturally the faculty were caring for the students as if they were their own children.

So while our hearts are heavy, and we are in mourning for the loss of such an outstanding

teacher and great Christian gentleman, we can take great and justifiable pride in how the St. Edmund family has reacted to this tragedy.

Clearly, they have learned lessons that go beyond the classroom and are at the core of life itself.

They have demonstrated by their actions that they understand what it means to be good Christian, contributing members of society.

May our Merciful Lord, bless each and every one of you. I’d ask that you continue to keep St. Edmund and the Malazzo family in your prayers.

New BOARD

ChairMAN Fr. Edward Brophy has retired as Pastor of St. Edmund Parish and as Chairman of the St. Edmund Prep Board of Trustees after ably serving in both capacities for fourteen years. Fr. Brophy is now a senior priest at St. Edmund Parish and will continue with parish duties.

During his time as Chairman of the Board, Fr. Brophy oversaw many exciting changes at the Prep including the introduction of the International Baccalaureate Program, the construction of the new wing, and the celebration of the school’s 75th Anniversary which included the creation of the Emmaus Society.

We thank Fr. Brophy for his many years of service to St. Edmund Prep and wish him well in this new phase of his priestly ministry.

On June 30, 2014 we welcomed Fr. David Dettmer (pictured below) as he became the Pastor of St. Edmund Parish, and assumed the role of chairman of our Board of Trustees. Born in Columbus, Ohio and raised in Brooklyn, New York, Fr. Dettmer attended St. Teresa of Avila School and Cathedral Prep High School, both in Brooklyn, followed by Cathedral College in Douglaston, New York. He is an alumnus of the Pontifical North American College and the Gregorian University, both in Rome.

Fr. Dettmer was ordained for the Diocese of Brooklyn in 1980 and assigned to the parish of St. Rosalia-Regina Pacis. After completing five years at the parish, Fr. Dettmer was assigned as chaplain at Xaverian High School, a post he held until 2005.

In June of 2005, Fr. Dettmer was assigned as a Parochial Vicar of St. Bernard Parish in Mill Basin, Brooklyn. He then moved to St. Luke Parish in Whitestone, Queens, where he served as Parochial Vicar. Fr. Dettmer served as a member of the Board of Trustees of Xaverian High School from 2009 to 2014.

We warmly welcome Fr. Dettmer to our St. Edmund community and we look forward to his leadership as we continue St. Edmund’s tradition of excellence in Catholic Education.

FR. BROPHY RETIRES AS PASTOR

CURTIN ‘82 WELCOMED TO BOARD OF TRUSTEES St. Edmund Prep recently added a new member to its Board of Trustees, Francesca Curtin ‘82. Francesca Curtin is currently a Managing Director and Global Head of Financial Institutions Risk Management at Citi. In her 17 years at Citi, Francesca has held a multitude of leadership roles in the organization. Her previous work experience includes various capacities at JPMorgan Chase, HSBC, and Salomon Smith Barney.

Ms. Curtin received her Bachelors of Science from New York University – Stern School of Business.She currently serves on the board of the Union Settlement Association and is also a Risk Advisor to Pro Mujer – a microfinance organization with operations in Latin America. She also volunteers her time with Habitat for Humanity and NY Cares. We welcome Ms. Curtin to the Board and wish her well as she works to further the mission, programs and values of St. Edmund Prep.

STAGE GETS “ALL SHOOK UP”

BAND PLAYS NYC FOOD FESTIVAL

On April 4-5, 2014, the St. Edmund Prep Theater Club performed its rendition of Joe DiPietro’s musical comedy, All Shook Up. All Shook Up cleverly combines elements of William Shakespeare’s Twelfth Night with the music of rock ‘n’ roll legend, Elvis Presley. Set in Anytown, U.S.A. during the 1950s, the town’s inhabitants find that they are leading boring lives until a mysterious stranger visits and provides a new outlook on life through his music.

On Sunday, May 18th the Badinage Ensemble performed for the NYC International Food Festival on the 55th Street Stage on Ninth Avenue Manhattan. This festival is in its 41st year. It is the longest running and continuous food festival drawing over 200,000 visitors over the weekend. We are scheduled to open Sunday’s Food Festival at the same location next year.

Under the direction of Ms. Peggy McEvoy and Mr. Scott O’Donnell ‘06, the Club developed one of its most successful musical productions to date, performing in front of sold-out audiences both nights of its run.

The cast, which included roughly thirty students from all grade levels, regularly met throughout the fall and winter to hone their acting and singing skills. Their hard work resulted in a wonderful performance that showcased their talents in singing, dancing, and acting.

The Festival blends international cuisine, art, music and soul in a unique neighborhood offering everything from Cajun to Asian. It is family friendly including games, rides and entertainment for all.

BLOOD DRIVE HEROES HONORED

CLASS GIFT MADE AT 100 NIGHTS

The Bob’s Discount Furniture High School Heroes Scholarship Program awards scholarships to high school seniors who demonstrate a high level of dedication and leadership in support of the American Red Cross blood program. With 70% of eligible students participating and 258 units collected in 2013-2014, St. Edmund Prep was the Grand Prize winner in New York State of eight $1,000 scholarships. This years’ recipients donated 5 or more units of blood or red cells during their time at St. Edmund Prep. The Class of 2014 marked 100 nights until graduation with a special dinner served to them by members of the Prep faculty. The 100 Nights Dinner recognizes those who have participated in the Senior Class Gift Campaign. With over 87% of the class participating, the Class of 2014 raised money which will be used to beautify the main entrance of our school. This marks the fifth straight year that the senior class has made a gift to St. Edmund upon graduation.

CLASS OF 1964 CELEBRATES GOLDEN REUNION

It was over fifty years ago this year that St. Edmund High School underwent a major change in its educational philosophy.

On the occasion of the school’s 25th Anniversary in 1957, in reaction to the changing role of women in society, the decision was made to make Saint Edmund a four-year academic high school and to use parish property to construct a new building for that school. Plans were made, funds were raised, and ground was broken for the new building in the spring of 1960.

The first class to spend four years in St. Edmund High School entered in September of 1960. In 1964, this class of young women graduated, prepared to either enter the work force or attend college.

St. Edmund Prep was thrilled to recognize this milestone by hosting a golden jubilee liturgy and luncheon celebration on May 2nd.

Over sixty members of the class were able to spend the day to reconnect and reminisce about their glory days in the hallowed halls of the new building. “Only seniors were allowed to use the front door!” “You were not allowed to carry your book bag on the right side of the staircase so as not to mark the new walls!” “Remember the dances in the cafeteria?” Laughter and good cheer filled the room and the ladies were especially thrilled to have Sr. Margaret John and Sr. Alice Therese present to thank them personally for their wonderful teaching talent and dedicated service. A number of the attendees recalled these teachers as their inspiration for their nursing careers and educational pursuits.

Those in attendance were able to learn a bit more about the present day St. Edmund, with current students offereing tours of the building and current administrators shared the new educational vistas their alma mater strives to achieve.

In particular, one alumna described the day as being “filled with love, pride and so many memories…So grateful and proud to be part of St. Edmund’s legacy.” – a sentiment shared by so many on that glorious day.

Most of us will recall the passion of President Kennedy’s “New Frontier” and his quest to lead the charge in space exploration. At that time the best and brightest in our country were called to use their talents and skills as a means of propelling the nation forward as a global leader. Over the past decade, a renewed call has been issued to increase the pool of candidates devoted to the study of science and mathematics.

In 2001, Judith A. Ramaley, a former director of the National Science Foundation was credited by many educators with being the first person to brand science, technology, engineering and mathematics curriculum as STEM. It was swiftly adopted by numerous institutions of higher education as well as the scientific communities as an important focus for education policy and development.

competitiveness and the related need for education programs in support of future generations. Numerous foreign countries have shown advancements in STEM industries and the training of highly qualified personnel. Grave concern has emerged over this trend.

A growing number of educators across the United States are determined to make STEM education a top priority so that US students move to the forefront as innovators and global leaders in these areas. St. Edmund Prep too has heard the call and is bringing focus to these key educational initiatives.

STEM is a curriculum based on the idea of educating students in four specific disciplines — science, technology, engineering and mathematics — in an interdisciplinary and applied approach. Rather than teach the four disciplines as separate and discrete subjects, STEM integrates them into a cohesive learning platform based on real-world applications. In fact many in the field are now moving toward the use of the term STEAM

(Science, technology, Engineering, Art and mathematics) as it becomes more and more apparent the importance of design in innovation and building.

St. Edmund Prep’s administration and faculty too, have grappled with increasing the interest and hence, the scores of our students in key STEM areas and is making some curricular changes to incorporate STEM education initiatives.

With just 6 members and a shoestring budget, the first year was dedicated to building a Robot and explaining the ins and outs of Robotics competition. There are many components to these competitions and crucial roles each individual must play to reach success. Team members assume the key roles that come naturally to them. The project manager works with the group to outline goals, oversee the budget and fundraising, work on community outreach, as well as keeping the team on schedule.

Builders brainstorm ideas with the help of designers to determine whether their ideas are successful in both form and function.

Next, programmers input code utilizing RobotC to bring the team’s creation to life. Drivers then practice scoring on the field built by the group in preparation for competition.

Three years ago, Science teacher Erica Barbieri joined our ranks and decided to organize a Robotics Club for our student population.

Ms. Barbieri’s previous experience with the organization U.S. FIRST (For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology) allowed her to serve as an excellent mentor to our fledgling club. The mission of U.S. FIRST is to inspire young people to be science and technology leaders, by engaging them in exciting mentorbased programs that build science, engineering and technology skills,

The second year, the team was ready to compete. There is much more to the robotics arena than shifting gears and getting your robot to perform rote commands. Each team is not only given specific tasks to have their robot perform, but they must do so in tandem with another team from a different school in each round. This involves working with a group of individuals unknown to you and developing strategy and solutions with them. What makes this process even more intriguing is that in the next round, you may actually be competing AGAINST your previous alliance. Now, you must look at your previous teammates and discover the weakness in their team and/or robot and exploit the weakness. Robotics truly is the sport of the mind!

This year, the Robotics club took on a life of its own, with its own members initiating a new club, the STEM Robotics Club. This extracurricular group was open to all members of SEP who were interested in learning more about STEM, or those just interested in seeing how the team’s robot progressed. The team was quite successful in competition, winning numerous awards. Among them: The PTC Design Award for Brooklyn. This award recognizes design elements of the robot that are

both functional and aesthetic. All successful robots have innovative design aspects; however the PTC Design Award is presented to teams that incorporate industrial design elements into their solution.

The FIRST Tech Challenge Winning Alliance Award won in Brooklyn and New York City. This award is given to the winning alliance represented in the final match.

Last, but certainly not least, the team won the INSPIRE Award for Brooklyn. The Inspire award is the most prestigious FTC award and is given to the team that truly embodies the ‘challenge’ of the FTC program.

The team that receives this award is chosen by the judges as having best represented a role model FIRST

Tech Challenge Team. The team that receives this award is a top contender for all other judging categories and is a strong competitor on the field. The winning team will receive an automatic invitation to participate in the next level of competition.

These wins earned them the opportunity to participate in the FTC East Super-Regional Championship this spring in York, PA, a huge accomplishment for a program only in existence for two years.

With success, comes increased demand.

Next year, St. Edmund will offer a Robotics class to our students. This in-depth multimedia curriculum developed by Carnegie Mellon Robotics Academy introduces students to the fundamentals of STEAM learning. Students collaborate in small teams to experience project management, lab safety & problem solving, TETRIX-based building & NXT programming utilizing RobotC. Students will partner with the Design class in occasional form vs. function design challenges and for critiques.

There is the promise that this Robotics class will become the “farm system” for our future Robotics competitors.

The next generation of Science curriculum standards is moving from “chalk to talk” and the Prep Science Department is embracing the

STEAM applications, we believe we are instilling the necessary skill set for our students to be successful in the world. Most employers want workers who are able to reason and solve problems using some math, science, or technology knowledge.

Think STEM is just for geeks?

Not true! Many workers in STEM fields use “soft” skills at work as much as they use math and science.

These skills include, communication and collaboration, creative abilities, leadership, and organizational skills.

Once a student arrives in the classroom, they are given a problem or task to perform and, working as teams, they must develop trial & error solutions to the task at hand. While there may have been some initial hesitancy to the ‘flip,” science department teachers believe the students are much more engaged and this new method challenges them to make inferences and apply the knowledge they gain through practical applications.

The shift in paradigm also required us to re-consider our AP offerings.

While AP Biology and AP Chemistry are still requirements for the medical field, STEAM professionals need to be

mindful of the environmental impact of their designs and innovations, again looking at form vs. function and being cognizant of how these innovations will enhance, change or harm the environment.

As STEAM-based careers increase, the environmental impact on humans will also intensify.

This course will educate students about these impacts and will explore responsible solutions. This will be accomplished through lectures and lab activities. Students are expected to be pro-active learners.

A central part of our mission at the Prep is to prepare our students for college and beyond.

As you can surmise, all professions require these skills and talents. At the Prep, we strive to educate the whole person, to be a premier institution which produces a college-prepared and career-ready student population. We recognize the importance of incorporating these ideals for all students, not just the mathematically and scientifically gifted.

We are taking the initial steps to introduce these concepts to all our students through STEMbased initiatives and look forward to expanding our offerings for the benefit of all students.

CREW COMES TO ST. EDMUND PREP

St Edmund Prep is proud to be the first Catholic High School in New York City to offer competitive rowing.

The Crew team, made up of eight dedicated students, began an intensive training program in March 2014 under the direction of Masters Coach Marice Love and in partnership with ROW NEW YORK. The team worked out indoors using portable ergs to prepare for two regattas this past spring. These races took place on April 22nd on the Harlem River (sailing from the Peter Jay Sharpe Boathouse

in Manhattan) and May 29th on Meadow Lake (sailing from the World’s Fair Boathouse in Queens).

The Eagle rowers will begin competing in the Metropolitan Interscholastic Rowing League in the fall of 2014. Members of the Inaugural St. Edmund Prep Crew Team are Kevin Llama ‘14, Anthony LiBassi ‘14, Martin Witkowski ’14, Benjamin Kelk ‘15, Tyler Reynolds ‘15, Shelby Lau ‘15, Amanda Mattioli ‘16 and Diana Sprance ‘16.

JV SOFTBALL COACHES TAKES DIVISION HONORED

The Girls Varsity Softball team captured the CHSAA City Championship with a 14-3 victory over St. Catharine’s Academy on Monday, June 2nd. The Eagles finished the season with a perfect record and the Division “A” Championship. Congratulations to the team, Coach Rowena Motylewski and Asst. Coach Scott O’Donnell ‘06

The Boys Varsity Basketball Team won the regular season Division championship and advanced to the CHSAA semi-finals. The Boys Freshman basketball team won both the CHSAA regular season and Intersectional Championship.

The Girls Junior Varsity Softball Team returned to the Prep after a two-season absence and enjoyed immediate success, winning the CHSAA BrooklynQueens Championship over Bishop Kearney on May 21st.

CLASS OF 2014 Shows meaning of Family One hundred seventy-nine students joined the ranks of the Prep alumni at the 80th Commencement Exercises on June 14th at Brooklyn College.

This commencement ceremony proved to be like no other. Normally this is a day of joy and gratitude as students, their families and the faculty and staff of St. Edmund Prep celebrate the many accomplishments and academic achievements of the graduating class. Yet this year, the occasion was also bittersweet as students, faculty and staff rallied from mourning the loss of their beloved music teacher, Mr. John Malazzo, who died suddenly on the morning of June 9th. The day also served as a solemn reminder of their dear friend and classmate, José Rodriquez who collapsed during basketball tryouts his sophomore year and was taken from their ranks much too soon.

However, the Class of 2014 displayed its resilience and strength as these, and other obstacles have moulded them into the fine young men and women they are today. As Kevin Kenna, the Salutatorian, cited in his remarks,” Looking back, the Class of 2014 is an extraordinary graduating class.

This class has been through more hardships than any group of young men and women should have to endure, yet we have somehow always managed to push through adversity… St. Edmund Prep is truly a family for this reason…through the good times and the bad; we have always managed to stand together as one.”

Since the inception of the band program, our Commencement exercise has always showcased a rousing musical performance by our Badinage Ensemble. This year was no exception as Seniors Emily O’Regan and Doug Maffia (pictured right) stepped up to the plate and assumed leadership of the ensemble, running daily practices and conducting the band’s musical selections the day of graduation. There could not be a more fitting tribute to Mr. Malazzo than his students, playing his favorite musical selections. Emily, Doug and the ensemble

members truly deserved the standing ovation they received that day. We are sure that Mr. Malazzo was beaming with pride.

Valedictorian Peter Clarke, who is heading to Brown University in the fall, used these difficulties as a battle cry to inspire his classmates to pursue their dreams despite life’s twists and turns, “We will face obstacles and adversity in the future. However, if we keep our eyes set on our goal – the goal to treasure our individuality, to accept ourselves completely, and to do what we love, we will succeed. If we persevere, overcome the obstacles that life will hurl at us, and emerge stronger than we were before (just like we have been doing for the past four years), we will succeed.” Peter’s passion and message resulted in an immediate standing ovation led by the Class of 2014. It was a memorable and poignant moment on an emotional day.

We too, wish the Class of 2014 all the best and we are sure they, as Peter Clarke, Valedictorian said so eloquently “will soar above the storms and excel like the true St. Edmund Prep eagles they are…”

TEDALDI TEACHING FELLOW

ORKIS TEARS UP THE COURT

Anthony Tedaldi ‘06, will fulfill a life long dream of becoming a high school teacher as he has been accepted to the University of Michigan as a Woodrow Wilson Teaching Fellow. The Woodrow Wilson Teaching Fellowship recruits individuals with backgrounds in the STEM fields (science, technology, engineering, and mathematics) and trains them to teach in high-need secondary schools in Indiana, Michigan, Ohio, and New Jersey. At Michigan, Tedaldi will earn a master’s degree in secondary education and will teach in a high-need school in the Ann Arbor area.

Tedaldi earned a bachelor’s and master’s degree in chemistry from St. John’s University.

Yuliya Orkis ‘11, is a force to be reckoned with both on the tennis court and in the classroom at Brooklyn College. Undefeated in the CUNY Athletic Conference in tennis singles, Orkis’ record of 16-0 allowed her the opportunity to compete at the USTA/ITA division III Women’s Northeast Regional Championships. She performed tremendously, losing in the semifinal round to the #1 seed. It was the first loss of herr entire college career. She has been named the CUNYAC Player of the Year for three years while maintaining a near perfect GPA as well. Her prowess in the classroom as well as on the court has earned her multiple ScholarAthlete awards. Way to go Julia!

SEP ALUMNI BECOME AUTHORS Bess Catanzarita Cunningham ’73 has recently published a book which chronicles her struggle with Obsessive Compulsive Disorder. Since childhood, she has suffered with severe OCD, anxiety, and depression. In desperation for relief, Bess spent 10 years researching and experimenting with little known, unconventional, all natural self-help methods that work as well as prescription drugs. After being in a living hell, Bess remains OCD free and is enjoying her life. Her book, OCD & Me, My Journey Through Obsessive Compulsive Disorder, is her personal story that many people can identify with.

Today she is President of Landing Gear Inc, and has a small chain of retail clothing stores. Recently she edited a book, A Lost Art (Reflections of a Dermatologist.) None of this would be possible without her conquering her severe OCD, which she did alone and without medication.

Christopher Sanchez ’01 and his mother, Susan Tenteromano have coauthored a children’s book entitled Child Baker to Culinary Chef. The tome tells the story of Chris’s growth from a young boy who liked to bake with his mother to a master culinary chef through recipes. They hope to inspire the tradition and joy that is shared when families bake together.

Over the years, Chris has interned and grown as a chef at some of the city’s most impressive eateries such as the Park Avenue Café, Bouchon and Eataly! He and his mother recently opened Le Petit Bakery on Myrtle Avenue in Brooklyn. As Chris tells it, he and his mother have wanted to open a nice neighborhood place where family and friends could enjoy fine baking and good company. This friendly, welcoming atmosphere has resulted in a loyal customer base and business is going very well.

GIVE BACK LORRAINE BUCKLEY SCHOLARSHIP Eric Koza, an eighth grader from Our Lady of Grace grammar school, is the recipient of the Lorraine Buckley Scholarship. Mr. Charles Buckley established this scholarship in memory of his wife Lorraine at the school where their son Gerard Buckley grew as a teacher and administrator.

Mrs. Buckley was a long-standing and beloved member of Our Lady of Grace’s faculty for many years who passed away after battling breast cancer. The award was presented at the incoming Freshman brunch and was presented by Mr. Buckley (pictured right), at the Freshman Brunch this past May. Eric will join the class of 2018 in the Fall.

SR. MARY PETER AWARD Paul Fraschilla ‘15 is this year’s recipient of the Sr. Mary Peter award, a scholarship fund established by the class of 1966. The award honors Sr. Mary Peter who was a beloved faculty member here at St. Edmund from 1959 to 1974 who died shortly before the class of ’66 celebrated their 40th anniversary. Paul is an active member of the Varsity Baseball Team, Emmaus Retreat Team, and he is a participant in the Summer Outreach Project. CATHEDRAL CLUB SCHOLARSHIP The Cathedral Club of Brooklyn is comprised of Roman Catholic professional and business leaders of Brooklyn and Queens. The Club annually sponsors many religious and social activities including a scholarship program. The program provides assistance to needy deserving Catholic high school students in our Diocese. Gerard Rehill ‘17 has been selected as the recipient of the Catholic Club Scholarship and was recently presented with a check by James McHugh, a Cathedral Club Board Member and Co-Chair of the Scholarship program.

MCMAHON SCHOLARSHIPS Mr. William McMahon continues to be a gracious benefactor to the Prep.

Once again, Mr. McMahon has awarded three $1000 scholarships in memory of his daughter Patricia who attended St. Edmund High School and was tragically killed in a car accident during her Sophomore year.

ATHLETIC HALL OF FAME INDUCTEES SEVEN NEW MEMBERS TO BE INDUCTED NOV. 7TH

St. Edmund Prep is proud to announce its second class for induction into its Athletic Hall of Fame. Nominations have come from near and far making it quite difficult to select our newest members with such a strong field to choose from. The induction will take place on November 7, 2014 in the Oak Room at Buckley’s Restaurant at 7:00 p.m. More information will be available this fall.

Mary anne marshall ‘89 Mary Anne Marshall was a 3-sport varsity athlete, playing volleyball, basketball, and softball during her time at St. Edmund. She excelled in basketball, accumulated over 1000 points, and served as captain of the basketball team in both her junior and senior years.

Sister Denise mccarthy, op One of the most recognizable names in St. Edmund history, Sister Denise McCarthy, OP was an enthusiastic supporter of Tiger athletics. She was a fixture at volleyball, basketball, and softball games as a scorekeeper and statistician for many years.

Jeanne Sullivan Toomey ‘78 Nominated as a coach, Jeanne Sullivan Toomey ’78 was a gifted athlete as a student at St. Edmund in the ‘70s. She returned to St. Edmund in the ‘80s where she coached varsity basketball for a number of successful seasons, garnering the respect and admiration of her players

Robert Wiatre ‘00 Rob played basketball for 4 years, serving as captain in both his junior and senior years. He graduated from SEP as the all-time scoring leader. He was the Sister Denise Student-Athlete of the Year as well as the class Valedictorian.

Christopher Wright Chris Wright served as head coach of the girls JV softball team from 1987 to 1989 and the varsity Softball Team from 1990 through 1999, winning the 1993 division championship. He was the athletic director from 1994 to 2001, overseeing the introduction of the boys’ sports teams.

1978 Girls Varsity Basketball Team Having won five straight division championships, the 1978 squad solidified its record of distinction, winning back-toback Diocesan championships in 1977 and 1978.

1997 Boys Varsity Baseball TEAM The 1997 Varsity Baseball Team was the first boys’ team in school history to win a City Championship. The Eagles won 13 league games and a division title on their way to an exciting City Championship win over Salesian.

3-ON-3 TOURNAMENT

On May 3rd, the St. Edmund Prep community came together to honor the memory of Joe Romano, who passed away in the summer of 2013, with a 3-on-3 Basketball Tournament. Joe was a dedicated coach at the Prep for more than 15 years, where he was a fixture with both the basketball and baseball programs. It was a fitting tribute to Joe to be remembered during an athletic event that saw over 60 alumni and dozens of parents and friends compete, cheer, and reminisce about a great coach and a wonderful man.

Each participant received an official Joseph Romano 3 on3 tournament t-shirt, food and beverages.

Two winning teams were awarded the coveted Joe Romano Champion long-sleeved shirt. In the competitive division, Chris Bernard ’03, Andy ’03 and David Louison ’11, and Matt O’Neill ’11 emerged victorious while Joe DeLea ‘06, Anthony Mottola’07 and Joseph Grillo ’05 were the winners in the recreational division.

This tourney will become an annual event at the Prep, as a way to carry on Joe’s legacy. The next Joe Romano tournament is scheduled for Saturday, May 2nd, 2015. Mark your calendars and gather your teams for a new SEP tradition!

Mourning the Loss of a

Beloved Teacher

On June 9, 2014, the St. Edmund Prep community was stunned to learn of the sudden passing of John Malazzo, our beloved music teacher. Mr. Malazzo is survived by his wife, Jeanne Corr Malazzo, a St. Edmund Prep Guidance Counselor, his father Charles, two brothers Gary and Ronald and his sister, Linda Lieberman.

John Malazzo was a gifted musician and began playing instruments when he was very young. An active member of the St. Camillus Band in the Rockaways, he was remembered for his daily rendition of the Star-Spangled Banner on his trumpet to begin the school day in grammar school.

He studied music at Brooklyn College where he received his BA and MA in fine arts. Mr. Malazzo was a trained classical singer as well as a Master Trumpeter.

He was invited to participate in the prestigious Aspen Music Festival and School, an international destination for classical musicians, music students, and music lovers. More than 630 music students from more than 40 U.S. states and 36 countries go to Aspen to play in five orchestras, sing, conduct, compose, and study with approximately 130 renowned artist-faculty. Students represent the field’s best talent and Mr. Malazzo was one of the best.

Mr. Malazzo performed in many different arenas. He was a pit musician on Broadway; performed in various ensembles; and toured Europe, playing at various classical and jazz music festivals, where he received many accolades.

However, music education was his true vocation and he was thrilled to share his love of music with his students.

Our Principal, John Lorenzetti, met Mr. Malazzo at Nazareth High School in the late 1980s. At that time, Nazareth’s musical program was decimated by budget cuts. Once boasting a faculty of three, John Malazzo was hired to resurrect the struggling program to its previous golden standard. John Malazzo seized the challenge and was able to create a high quality program.

Fast forward to September 1995. Mr. Lorenzetti was appointed Principal at St. Edmund Prep. During Mr. Lorenzetti’s first few years, Mr. Malazzo would contact him from time to time, offering to come to the Prep to

begin a music program here. Mr. Lorenzetti refrained, as the time was not yet right to begin a new music program.

One spring day in 2002, a hulking presence appeared in the doorway of the Principal’s office. It was Mr. Malazzo. As Mr. Lorenzetti recalls, a resume came floating on his desk and the booming voice announced, “I have resigned my position at Nazareth. I would like to work for you. Here is my resume and your last chance…the rest of my resumes will be in the mail tomorrow.” Mr. Lorenzetti hired him on the spot. It was the continuation of a very fruitful musical partnership.

Once again, Mr. Malazzo found himself charged with creating a new music program. He was starting his tenure at the Prep without one stitch of sheet music, not a single music stand and absolutely no instruments. Armed with his talent, tenacity and the support of the administration,

he built a music program from scratch. He was able to use his personal musical contacts to arrange for the rental of instruments and bartered for sheet music and stands. The old home economics room became the band studio and despite the awful acoustics and presence of stovetops and kitchen cabinets, band rehearsals began in earnest in September 2002. The band performed for the first time at the Christmas assembly where it managed to play a few Christmas carols. The final note was greeted by a standing ovation by the entire student body and Mr. Malazzo’s hard work was rewarded with a standing ovation by his fellow faculty members at the faculty Christmas brunch. continued on page 24

Remembering John Malazzo

Since those beginnings, the band program has grown by leaps and bounds with a wide range of musical groups.

The concert band, the badinage and chamber ensembles, the Pep band and Jazz band have brought music to our building and spirit to our events. It has become one of the Prep’s trademarks as our students are asked to perform at tree-lighting ceremonies, nursing homes and community events. The variety of venues continues to grow as our reputation precedes us. All of this is because of Mr. Malazzo, his talents, his dedication and commitment to our students.

John seemed most proud of the number of students who entered our building without ever having played an instrument – usually half of all concert band members.

At band performances, he would often ask students to raise their hands if they had any prior experience before coming to the Prep. He wanted students and parents to understand that it was never too late to nurture a talent and gain the discipline and joy which comes from musicianship.

Perhaps one of our students said it best when speaking of Mr. Malazzo and his impact on their lives. Kevin Kenna ‘14, said, “His love for teaching music and the attention he paid to the lives of his students outside of the classroom taught me to always do more than is expected of me. So I will do more, as we all should, if not for ourselves, but for him, for his memory and for his love of music.”

His example, dedication and devotion did not go unnoticed. When addressing his classmates at graduation Valedictorian Peter Clarke ‘14 said. “...the best outcomes are achieved when we are fully invested in what we do. There isn’t a person who better demonstrated that than, Mr. John Malazzo. He strongly showed what it meant to be yourself and to follow your dreams. By doing so, he created a powerful legacy that has touched so many of us now and will continue to touch many in the years to come.”

So we thank God for the gift that John Malazzo was to the Prep family. While it will be difficult to fill his shoes, music will fill our hallways again – John Malazzo’s living legacy to us all.

This year the Student Council, led by James McGlashin ‘14, Kevin Richardson ‘15, Tyler Reynolds ‘15 and inspired by Assistant Principal and History teacher, Mrs. Allison McGinnis, decided to undertake a project to honor the military alumni of St. Edmund Prep. The Wall of Honor will honor and memorialize all St. Edmund alumni who went on to serve our country in the armed forces. This mural will be painted by St. Edmund students and located on the second floor of the new wing. The design will feature the American flag as well as the flags of the armed forces, the Coast Guard, and the National Guard.

FAMILY DAY

Bright, sunny skies shined on SEP’s second annual Family Day on Saturday, May 17th. This unique event allowed students, their families, faculty, staff and alumni to connect and celebrate the Prep. St. Edmund Prep students manned the game booths as neighborhood children participated in traditional carnival games. Victory Entertainment kept the music pumping and students clamored to participate in the balloon toss and pie-eating contest. The highlight of the day was the dunk tank featuring Dean of Students Mike O’Brien and faculty members Scott O’Donnell ’06 and Joe Romano ‘04.
