THE 2021/22 SKI SEASON KICKS OFF WITH BIG CHANGES TO THE STEAMBOAT RESORT BASE AREA 10

It’s been years in the making but Steamboat Ski Area is finally getting a major facelift. Last summer, the first phases of the 10-year master plan broke ground, kicking off $135 million in major resort improvements to take place over the next two years. “We are zeroing in on wrapping up the first phase of our Full Steam Ahead project,” says Maren Franciosi, Communications Manager for Steamboat Mountain Resort. “The work that was completed this summer will make way for the future.”

The project broke ground last April when the gondola

Off the slopes, the Steamboat Corporation is proud to announce its biggest wage increase in history, as well as the opening of an employee childcare center. “We’re really working on a lot of employee-focused initiatives,” Franciosi says. “That’s one way we can approach sustainability, in sustaining our team and keeping people here working for us.” The company is also committed to going plastic-free at the resort this year and was one of the first Alterra resorts to hire a sustainability director, Sarah Jones. Overall, things are looking up, or full steam ahead. It’s been a long time coming, Franciosi says. “We’re finally getting that facelift that will live up to our reputation as a world-class resort.” // fullsteamahead.steamboat.com

High buyer demand and low inventory continue to be factors in rising prices. The steep decrease in the median days on market for a property in Steamboat clearly depicts just how strong the buyer demand is. With low inventory and such high demand, particularly in prime locations, there continues to be an upward pressure on price-per-square-foot in residential properties.

SIMPLE & AFFORDABLE WAYS TO REFRESH YOUR HOME

Whether you’re putting your home on the market or just want to hit the reset button on your interior without breaking the bank, no need to take out a home equity line. There are several ways you can freshen things up without spending too much money, says Lindsey Jamison, Partner and Lead Designer at Rumor Designs. “I’ve moved a lot in my adult life, so even as an interior designer who is used to large-budget projects, I have discovered ways to make improvements without spending too much.” The first thing to do, Jamison says, especially when listing your home for sale, is to declutter. “It feels good to get rid of things you don’t need anymore, and gives you a fresh start, and it’s free. I’m a big fan of working with what you already have—it can make a difference.”

1

FIND A NEW ARRANGEMENT.

“The first thing you can do without spending anything is to rearrange the furniture,” Jamison says. “Chances are you’ve had it set up a certain way for so long that just moving things around a little bit will make a big difference.” She suggests moving couches to the other side of the room and changing the chair layout while still maintaining a nice flow. “Try changing the layout of your rugs—put it at an angle instead of having it symmetrical with your sofa.” Or spend some money on new rugs and throw pillows and get a big return on investment for a fresh pop of color.

2

THE MINOR THINGS ARE MAJOR.

Interior designers are trained to see the smaller details most people wouldn’t even think of, but collectively, those details make a difference. “There are so many minor things you might not even notice, like outlet covers that might be cracked or broken,” Jamison says. Replacing old dingy covers with new, bright white covers will provide the overall space with a fresh feel. Other small things that can make a big difference are changing out cabinet hardware in the kitchen, bathroom, or even on an old antique piece. “Dated hardware can be heavy and clunky. You can freshen up your cabinetry with brushed nickel or brushed brass, which is coming back right now.”

WALLPAPER, REINVENTED. It does require an investment, but wallpaper is incredibly versatile and effective when it comes to updating a space. “It’s a big design element that we’ve been using a lot. It adds a layer of sophistication and texture to any room,” Jamison says. She suggests using it for an accent wall in the bedroom behind a headboard, on the backs of shelves, or in the bathroom. Wallpaper with a natural weave like grasscloth provides texture and comes in many colors; vinyl is best for bathrooms because it’s easy to wipe down and can handle moisture. “Wallpaper comes in many price points, but if you are on a budget, you can achieve the same effect with paint,” Jamison says.

4

FIRST IMPRESSION IS EVERYTHING. “The entryway is your first impression, so you want something nice to see right away,” Jamison says. Start with the front door. “Bold colors like red and orange are popular right now, but even a fresh coat of paint can do a lot.” The entryway is the first thing you see when you come through the front door, so it’s important to consider. “You want a welcoming landing space, maybe with a console and table lamp with a pretty mirror if your space allows it.” Organizing the space is equally as important and can be achieved easily and on a low budget with hooks, cubbies, or benches that have storage. “Not everyone has a custom mudroom, and people who live in the mountains tend to have a lot of jackets and gear,” Jamison says. “Whether it’s custom or something you purchase online, smart storage is the key.”

5

IT’S ALL ABOUT ACCESSORIZING. Bookshelves are a great place to start when it comes to refreshing your space with a new look and some accessories. Jamison suggests restyling bookshelves by decluttering, “taking what you have and rearranging it or flip your books around and put a stack of books with the paper facing out.” Accessories are another inexpensive way to spruce up a space. “Swap out picture frames and add nice matting, or create a gallery wall, which are really popular right now. Don’t be afraid to mix in artwork; kid’s artwork can create a fun, playful feel.” //rumordesigns.com

COMING DOWN THE MOUNTAIN THE OFFSLOPE GUIDE TO WINTER FUN IN STEAMBOAT

26

|

S T E A M B OAT S I R .C O M

What is there to do in ski country if you’re not skiing? The answer is, plenty. In fact, Steamboat has so much to offer off-slope, chances are you won’t be able to get it all in. That’s exactly the reason so many people come for a vacation and end up staying for life. The truth is, winter has just as much to offer in terms of outdoor activities as summer—you just need a few extra layers. Here’s our list of ways to play in the snow, no lift ticket required.

1

GET YOUR NORDIC ON

If you’ve never tried Nordic skiing, the truth is, if you can walk, you can cross-country ski. Better yet, Steamboat has a wide variety of cross-country ski trails and Nordic centers where you can get everything you need to get started, from equipment rentals to lessons. Whether you prefer classic or want to give skate skiing a try for a higher intensity workout, there are several options. Try the Steamboat Ski Touring Center, where you’ll find 15 kilometers of groomed trails including a blissfully flat beginner loop. The trails wind across meadows, into Aspen groves, and along Fish Creek. Hearty homemade lunches and snacks are available

YUP, EVEN IN WINTER

Steamboat lives up to its name as Bike Town USA so much so that most people can’t part with their bikes, even in winter. Fat bikes, or bikes made with extrawide, extra-knobby tires and gearing specifically to ride on snow open up a whole new way to explore in the wintertime. Ideal for snow-packed backroads and trails, fat bikes can be used on most Nordic center groomed trails, BLM land (think: roads that are closed for the winter but are still packed from snowmobile use), City of Steamboat Trails, Stagecoach State Park, Routt County Roads (rural roads that are popular for gravel biking in the summer are perfect), and US Forest Service Lands. Bike rentals can be found at most local bike shops

large soaking pools in addition to a covered four-story water slide (Warning: it’s fast, dark, and will get your heart pumping!). The pools have been here for over 100 years, enjoyed by the Ute Indians who first settled in the area and then later the homesteaders. Recently upgraded amenities include locker rooms, fitness classes and gym, café, and retail, so mom can get her workout in while Dad takes the kids for a swim.

You can’t visit Steamboat Springs without gaining some understanding and context for where the town got its name. Start by visiting the famous Strawberry Park Hot Springs and soak while basking in the views in this remote and pristine setting. Heated restrooms and changing areas are available on-site as well as massage and overnight lodging. Reservations are required, so

BROWN RANCH TO PROVIDE THOUSANDS OF AFFORDABLE HOUSING UNITS FOR STEAMBOAT’S LOCALS The challenge of finding affordable housing for workers in mountain towns is nothing new, but pandemic trends have created a perfect storm for what has become a true housing crisis in Steamboat. HOMEGROWN SUPPORTING LOC AL RANCHERS WITH THE COMMUNITY AGRICULTURE ALLIANCE When the Steamboat Gravel bike race (SBT GRVL) is held every summer, hundreds of cyclists are herded along the rural county roads of the Yampa Valley, much like the cattle who have occupied this land for generations. That’s one of the reasons why the Community Agriculture Alliance, a non-profit whose mission is to promote and support agriculture in the Yampa Valley, hosts ranch tours for cyclists. “They’re out riding on gravel roads past ranches, admiring the fields of hay and the cattle grazing, and we want them to know what they’re seeing, and vice versa. We provide education programs and events for riders and also let ranchers know when they can expect to have hundreds of cyclists on the roads,” says Michele Meyer, CAA Executive Director. important to facilitate local food production,” Meyer says. “Now we have a retail market with 80 different farmers and ranchers and hundreds of different seasonal products.” The retail market started seven years ago but has grown exponentially in the last year alone, in part due to Covid. “Pre-Covid, the market was doing $2,500 a week in sales with 50 customers, and literally within one week of March 2020, we went to $10,000 a week in sales with 150 customers,” Meyer says. “We have sustained that growth and continued to get more people to connect with their food, with local farmers and ranchers, and with our organization through this market.” In 2020, the retail store grossed $330,000, and

those funds went directly back to producers. “We never intended to be managing a retail store when we started out, but we are happy to fill this middle man role on behalf of farmers and ranchers. We’re helping them sell their products locally and to diversify their revenue.” In addition to community outreach and the retail store, CAA also offers education programs both for agriculture producers and local professionals. “Water is critical, so we do a lot of education, outreach, and programs to make sure local farmers and ranchers are getting their water, advocating for water, and having access to water,” Meyer says. “Without water, there is no agriculture.” Water, more vital than ever after consecutive years of drought, has curbed hay production, forcing many ranchers to import their hay. “The impact of the drought has changed the economics of farming and ranching,” Meyer says. CAA also offers land stewardship classes in partnership with CSU Routt County Extension, for new land owners and real estate agents, who can earn professional education credits. “If real estate agents are educated and informed about land ownership in Northwest Colorado, we’ll have more informed landowners. They are the first point of contact,” Meyer says.

and its community. “Sometimes agriculture is equated with big corporations, but that’s not what happens here in the Yampa Valley,” Meyer says. “These are multigenerational families who live and work here. They are trying to keep the legacy going, and it’s hard work.

Ultimately, it’s about preserving the legacy of ranching

Warner’s Minnesota accent still lingers. It has of way of making everything she says sound lyrical and upbeat, even when she’s being blunt. The self-proclaimed ski bum first came west in the 70s, doing stints in Aspen, Sun Valley, and Steamboat before returning home to finish college, but she couldn’t stay away from Steamboat for long. “I had a Bachelor of Arts degree and oh boy, there I was, still cleaning toilets.
