Principal’s Message

2023 has been our Year of Fraternity. Walking together in solidarity, as parents, students and teachers we have a common goal to support our students to become young people with the capacity to self-regulate their emotions and their learning. We work with your daughters every day to build their social-emotional and academic skills. Our scriptural focus 1 Corinthians 2:12, “understand the gifts bestowed on us by God”, requires self-awareness and then generosity of spirit to share those gifts within our St Clare’s and wider community. There have been so many examples recently of students and staff sharing their gifts. On Friday, we celebrated the academic gifts of our students from Years 7-11 over the last semester. All students have worked to learn and apply new knowledge and develop new skills. For some students in some subjects this has been a real struggle. But a reminder, if you are not being challenged, you are not learning. Real growth as a learner is not about avoiding or eliminating challenge; it is about building strategies to overcome them. The award winners are celebrated because they have successfully grappled with challenges over the last semester. They have either gone on to achieve excellent academic results or they have demonstrated commendable growth in their learning or their disposition towards learning. We also celebrated a range of major awards for students who have gone above and beyond in sharing their gifts within the St Clare’s community over this year. It was wonderful to have the opportunity to say “well done” to students before the break. Thursday’s Christmas concert was a lovely, joy-filled celebration of song, dance and community. That our 2024 Year 12 Student Leaders returned to MC and perform in the Christmas concert is a testament to the strength of student leadership we have coming through the ranks. Earlier in the week we had our End of Year Advent Mass, and our Year 7-9 Student community shared a prayerful time in liturgical celebration and we were all appreciative of the vocal gifts shared with us there. Last Tuesday was a proud night for both teachers and parents alike. The Year 12 Formal was a fitting celebration of our students’ last 6 years of schooling and the completion their secondary education. It was a wonderfully relaxed evening with the girls, their partners, parents and teachers enjoying the company, food, band and atmosphere provided by being at the Arboretum. It was lovely to hear from those who took the time to thank the teachers for their dedication in teaching and supporting these girls. There are so many opportunities for our young people moving out into the world next year and we will shortly know and celebrate the achievements of our Tertiary Package students when their final results (ATARs) are released. I wish all our families a wonderful and blessed Christmas, not forgetting that the birth of Jesus, God coming to us as human, is a miracle and a message of love and hope for us all. Christmas blessings to you and all your loved ones. Ann Cleary Principal

7-11 Awards Assembly On Friday the College held our Semeseter 2 7-11 Awards Assembly. Congratulations to all students who received recognition. It is affirming of their hard work and dedication and students can be very proud of their achievements. The College also wishes to acknowledge those students who have not qualified for an award. Languages Italian Venetian Mask-making Year 7 Italian students have spent the last 2 weeks researching Carnevale, a traditional Catholic event famously celebrated in Venice each year. Students also created their own Venetian masks from scratch out of papier-mâché, painting and decorating the mask in the style of their choice. Gelato Messina Year 7 Italian students were also able to celebrate the end of a year together by enjoying some gelato at Gelato Messina in Kingston. “The trip to Messina Gelato was highly enjoyable and well-organized. It taught us a lot about responsibility in public, whilst also giving us a fun day out with our peers” “I really enjoyed the trip to Messina Gelato. It was well-organised and an overall fun afternoon out with my friends and other peers. It was also a valuable lesson about being responsible in public” Il Colosseo Italian Street Food Year 8 and Year 10 Italian students were treated to an authentic Italian lunch at Il Colosseo Italian Street Food at Fyshwick markets. The students got the opportunity to use their language in a reallife situation, ordering their pizza in Italian. This delicious lunch was a fitting way to end the year together. Thank you to the staff at Il Colosseo for allowing the students to put their studies into practise, and for a delightful lunch! WAATI Italian exchange program The following Year 10 and 11 students (Siena Goodwin, Olivia Hicks, Chloe Roughley, and Lauren Russell) are participating in the WAATI Italian Exchange program and departed to various parts of Italy on Sunday 26 November. They will spend two months living in an Italian family and attending high school, fully immersing themselves in the Italian language and culture. We look forward to hearing about their experiences in the new school year.

French

The Year 7 and 8 classes enjoyed looking at the film Ride Above (French title Tempête = storm) which had been presented at the French Film Festival at the beginning of the year and later came out as a DVD. Born and raised with horses, Zoe leads a happy life at her parents’ racehorse stables, driven by the dream of someday becoming a jockey like her father. Then the students completed a booklet to reflect on the themes, the characters, the settings and the events in the film and linked it to a game. Year 7 students worked on a Ride Above goose game, and Year 8 have been working on transposing the different ideas of the film in a card game. Year 9 and 10 students looked at the film The Kitchen Brigade/ La Brigade (2022) also shown earlier in the year in the French Film Festival and worked on a booklet to reflect on the film. This film explores the world of French gastronomy while also tackling issues of social justice and inclusion through the story of Cathy. Pétanque On Friday 24 November Year 7 and Year 8 were surprised with the visit from Rob and his great team of Canberra Pétanque or jeu de boules game, mostly known in Australia under its Italian name bocce. The word Pétanque comes from the French Pieds tanqués, which means feet next to each other when throwing the ‘boule’. There is also a squared boules version with wooden blocks which can be seen on the clickview clip: https://clickv.ie/w/qjIt The students thoroughly enjoyed discovering the rules of the game and we also noted that Mr Chifley seemed to have a je-ne-sais-quoi with this game: he won all games! Ultimately, the idea is to one day bring a delegation of Canberra Catholic schools to one of the international competitions of Jeu de boules or jeu ce boules carrées (squared), so we’ll invite Canberra Pétanque again… and let’s get training!

12

Canberra Pétanque meets 5pm during summer months and 2pm in other months, every Sunday at the Weston Park Boulodrome, Yarralumla. Club also plays on Saturdays at Tuggeranong Town Park. Club also plays on Tues and Thurs afternoons, at Weston Park, commencing at 5pm. New players welcome with family. Sometimes kangaroos come and join. That must be pretty spectacular!

In the Classroom Year 11 and 12 Design and Textiles, Semester 2 2023 This semester in Design and Textiles the Y12 and Y11 students collaborated to design and make a garment for their final assessment Project. The brief provided the students with an opportunity to consider sustainable textiles practice, use a white satin fabric that was collected from a reuse facility in Canberra and apply technology appropriate to design their idea into reality. The garment was to incorporate a cultural inspiration, design elements and principles that challenged the girls creative thinking. They set goals, worked to a schedule and collaborated while using technical skills to construct the garmet through pattern making, reading a commercial sewing pattern and appling techniques such as gathering, draping, hand beading and fabric manipulation. The two garments explored their design vision and application to achieve these unique products. They are to be commended for the challenges they encountered and work to complete. Creative and Critical Thinking Day Over 40 students participated in Creative and Critical Thinking Day on Thursday 30 November in the San Damiano Learning Commons. They were able to choose from activities such as Chess, Jigsaw building, Lego systems and Dungeons and Dragons. The activities are designed to challenge the girls to use their critical thinking skills, develop creativity and solve problems in teams. In industry people do not work alone and teamwork is a valued skill. All students had to play and learn as part of a team today. The Jigsaw crew decided after lunch that combining teams to solve a problem provided more skill and solutions. The Lego teams investigated mechanising their designs that were based on creative thinking to change current Lego designs. The Dungeons and Dragons campaign saw the death of many dragons and elves as the girls shared their powers and survival skills.

The students playing chess experimented with 4 player chess and strategy. Robotics students worked with a senior IT student to learn about the importance of following instructions and learning the basics before modifying designs. Creative and Critical Thinking Day happens every semester. Keep an eye on the SEQTA splash page for the invitation to sign up.

In the Classroom Maker Space programs: Jewellery Workshop Students from Years 7 – 9 participated in a jewellery making workshop as part of the Maker Space programs. They visited Venetia Major Bespoke Jewellery in Hall to begin their day. Venetia generously gave her time to propose a design activity for the students to take existing gems and redesigning jewellery for a client. She then demonstrated how she works with tools and answered lots of questions about her work, training, certification as a gemmologist and how she works with precious metals. The students then returned to school to design their own copper jewellery using and led by Madeline Cardone, learnt how to use saws, drills, engravers and tools associated with metal work. •

Summer said: the day has been education, fun and interactive.

Eloise said: visiting the bespoke jeweller gave me an insight into what we could do after school with career paths in jewellery. I was inspired to make my own jewellery back at school.

Amelie and Edith said: the day was education and fun. Best birthday ever.

Millie said: It was a very good hands on experience in the jewellery making work environment.

Zara said: Today was a good day to express your creativity and plan and design on paper before making something bigger.

The College expresses its gratitude to Venetia Major for her time and tour of her workshop. If you would like to support a local business that supports our students please consider Bespoke Jewellers in Hall. Mrs Juliette Major Leader of Learning - ICT Innovation

Year 8 Religion Year 8 Religion have been learning about the Holy Trinity this term. Their assessment task was to come up with a creative representation of the Holy Trinity. We had a range of insightful and thought provoking submissions for the task. The aim of the task was to find an object that was three in one, like the Holy Trinity (which is made up of the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit). For example, an egg has a shell, an egg white and an egg yolk. Of course, all their creative representations could never fully encapsulate the mystery of the Holy Trinity. The girls had a lot of fun thinking outside the box to come up with their creations. Their rationales also revealed that they learned a lot about the unique relationship between the three persons of the Holy Trinity. The connected with teachings of the Saints and the Catechism to express their learning about the relationship.

Celebrating Our Achievements Olympic Change Maker Award Congratulations to Ava Boyes (year 12) on being awarded the Australian Olympic Change-Maker award for 2023. The award recognises students who demonstrate the Olympic spirit of friendship, sportsmanship and striving for excellence both on and off the playing field; through leadership and driving positive change in our College and local community. Olympic Change Maker nominees across Australian schools are invited to take part in a virtual forum to collaborate with Olympians and other young leaders around the nation. Ava epitomises the Olympic spirit and is an excellent leader at St Clare’s College. As a player, she has achieved outstanding results in interschool sport. This year she received the Most Valuable Player award for our senior representative teams in both basketball and netball. She has also achieved excellence in basketball at elite level, representing the ACT at the national championships. Her skills and abilities have been recognised internationally and she has received a College Basketball Scholarship to the USA for next year. While her on-court skills and abilities are incredibly impressive, her contribution to our College community and sports program have been equally valuable. She has been an exemplary role model and leader in her position as College Sports Captain. She has assisted with many formal and informal sports activities and initiated ways to involve students in sport. She is an inclusive leader who promotes healthy participation, fun and good sportsmanship in all she does. She has also shown her commitment to junior students through coaching of weekend netball teams for a number of years. She is an incredible role model for our students and embodies the sporting values of the College and the Olympic spirit. Congratulations, Ava!

Sports Person Of The Year The Junior and Senior Sports Person of the Year awards were presented to two students who represent the sporting participation, achievement and values of St Clare’s College. To be eligible for the award, students must have: • Represented the College in at least three sports events • At least one of the events must have been a team sport • At least one of the events must have been at the Associated Southern Colleges Championships in Athletics, Cross Country and/ or Swimming • The student must have displayed the values of the College, including sportsmanship and respect for others. The elite sporting achievements of students are considered, but the main focus of the award is on a student’s willingness and pride to represent the College in various sports. The recipients of the Sports Person of the Year (Senior and Junior) are selected by a panel of staff who have supervised sports events, in consultation with Health and Physical Education staff and College Leadership. Senior Winner Congratulations to Sarah Bennett (Year 12) on being awarded Senior Sports Person of the Year. She represented the College in 10 events this year across a variety of sports including: Australian Football, Cross Country, League Tag, Netball, Rugby Union and Swimming. Sarah won the College Age Championship in swimming, as well as the School Sport ACT Age Championship. She broke an ACT record in the process for the 50m backstroke. She also finished in the top 3 of the School Sport ACT Cross Country championship. She has achieved excellence in her elite sporting pursuits outside the College at Swimming Australia and Swimming NSW events, and in State League ACT Netball. It is not only Sarah’s sporting prowess across multiple sports that has earned her this award. She has been recognised by staff as consistently displaying great cooperation, encouragement of teammates and an outstanding attitude and application in her representation of the College in sport. She was also awarded with the University of Canberra Sports Prize for commitment towards her academic studies, whilst excelling in sport and engaging in our College community. We are a proud partner of the University of Canberra through our engagement in the St Clare’s College Ignite Sports program, which provides alternative pathways into university whilst pursuing sporting endeavours. The University generously awarded a certificate and $500 prize to Sarah. Congratulations, Sarah!
