Principal’s Message

Today is World Teachers’ Day. It is wonderful that there is a day designated for the affirmation of teachers, recognising their essential role in the development of young people; not just here, but globally. Pulling inward from that global perspective, we should recognise and give thanks that we live in a privileged community in a privileged country. St Clare’s College proudly takes its place in Canberra as a Catholic all girls’ school, in contrast to other regions where openly declaring a religious identity AND educating young women would be restricted or banned. “As the unsung heroes behind every student’s success, educators tirelessly persevere, often facing long hours, enormous workloads, and at times, low morale. Yet, their unwavering commitment to ensuring young people succeed well into the future is a testament to their indispensable place in society.” B. Henebery (27 Oct 2023) World Teachers Day: Hats off to our unsung heroes. The Educator K/12 (theeducatoronline.com) Over the last two days, we have been celebrating our teachers. Friday, being our 2024 Year 7 Orientation Day, was always going to be a hive of activity with an additional cohort on site. We therefore treated teachers with a before school coffee van and morning tea on Thursday. A highlight of Friday are the personalised bookmarks made by the seniors and presented to teachers at morning tea, and the distribution of gratitude cards. Students were invited to write comments of gratitude to any teacher who has made a particular impact on their lives this year. It is a real privilege and joy to have read some of those comments and know how sometimes the smallest of actions have the largest impact. Some students signed off on their comment; others remained anonymous. Either way, teachers have been touched by receiving these affirmations for the hard work they do every day with our students. I appreciate our partnership with parents and one avenue for parents to contribute to the College has been through their participation on the College Board. Catholic Education Canberra Goulburn has undertaken a School Board and Community Council Review over the course of the year. This has now concluded and a move to a School Community Council model across the archdiocese has been endorsed by the Catholic Education Commission and Archbishop Christopher. This change reflects the significant changes that have occurred over the last few decades in families and schools, and the complex nature of current regulatory requirements. “The focus of the School Community Councils will remain on parents and carers and members of our school communities working together with the Parish Priest and school staff to make our schools the best that they can be. This may be by supporting the Principal to make strategic decisions about the school, promoting our school within the local community, participating in community or fundraising activities, or strengthening our relationships with our local parishes. Supporting the Principal and Parish Priest in the development and promotion of Catholic identity, the ethos and mission of the school will continue to be a cornerstone of the work of our School Community Councils.” R. Fox (23/10/23) Letter to All School Boards, Community Councils and P&Fs. Despite this change causing a level of uncertainty, I remain grateful to our current Board for their ongoing support, input and perspectives on how we manoeuvre through this transition and the operational considerations required. All schools are expected to have completed their transition to the new model by the end of Term 1 2024. We will advise further details once we have navigated the transition process. Ann Cleary Principal

Captains’ Corner Hello everyone and welcome back to the final Term of the year! Throughout the year, there has been an abundance of events and fundraisers to get involved in amongst the St Clare’s community and give back to those less fortunate. While the last three terms have been jammed packed with all things Social Justice, it is important to end the year on a high note and continue to work toward achieving tangible and visible change.

Welcome to the final stretch! In 2023, we as a College made so much progress in excelling the sporting life of students (and staff) at St Clare’s, and so many of our students made some amazing accomplishments in their own respective sports. As the 2023 school year comes to a close, it’s important we reflect on the year that was, and recognise our students’ efforts and successes.

In Term 3, the Social Justice Team held a Mission and Ministry focus week which included numerous activities such as a lunchbox concert, a book swap, games, and gratitude activities. In Week 6, Japara and Wibalu held the third Charity Day for MacKillop House as well as Daffodil Day. Other events included Twilight Retreat, Father’s Day Raffle for Catholic Mission, and R U OK Day.

This year, to celebrate these successes, we have several events to recognise the College’s sporting triumphs. On Thursday 2nd November, we will be holding the Weekend Netball Presentation in the College Hall for our 19 teams that competed at Southern Canberra Netball Association this past Winter. That same evening, we are holding Celebration of Sport night, which will commence right after the Netball Presentation. We are lucky enough to have two guest speakers join us that night: Abbie and Ella Ryan! These sisters are St Clare’s alumnae and both previous Sports Captains! The theme for the evening is Jeans & Jerseys, with many awards to be won, trivia to be played, and prizes to be handed out!

In Term 4, the Social Justice Team is encouraging staff and students to donate items as a part of Donations Week, with our meetings being utilised to continue knitting. These last weeks hold many opportunities to give back and practice kindness in the College community, providing chances for staff and students to promote the Social Justice Team’s focus: “from little things, big things grow”. Mackenzie Graham Social Justice Captain The final term of this year is going to be exciting for everything Faith and Community! We started the term with our annual Twilight retreat which was an enlightening evening with many students and staff attending. The evening was filled with lots of activities such as Ice Breaker games, self-reflection questions, small group work and finishing with a beautiful liturgy. Youth Ministry will continue until Week 5 this term and everyone is welcome in W212 on Thursdays during lunchtime. We will be finishing off the term with a thank you afternoon tea with all the other Mission and Ministry groups on Friday 27 October. A massive congratulations to the 2024 Faith and Community Captain Julia Norgrove! I would like to say a big thank you to the amazing St Clare’s Youth Ministry team and a very special thank you to Mrs Manning. Thank you STCC!

As much as I am sad to be finishing up my time as a Clare’s girl and 2023 Sports Captain, I am so excited to see what next year brings for sport at St Clare’s, led by our amazing 2024 Sports Captain, Ashley Patton! Keep pushing through this final term girls, we’re so close to the finish line! Ava Boyes Sports Captain

Tidings – 2023

Hello everyone, and welcome to the last Term of 2023! We only have a few weeks left of the year to go (particularly Year 12), so let’s finish with a bang! In Term 3, the Sustainability Committee arranged several sustainability-fuelled events for the College, such as the collection of plastic lids from soda, milk and water bottles to donate to Lids 4 Kids, with the additional benefit of removing this plastic from landfill. During these remaining cold winter months, the Committee held viewings of the ABC’s War on Waste, where students were able to snuggle up with blankets and learn about ways our society needs to improve in managing our waste, as well as initiatives people around Australia are taking to mitigate these issues, therefore inspiring us to consider how positive changes could be made at school.

Taking inspiration from War on Waste, the Sustainability Committee is holding a waste audit during Week 3, where we will inspect the contents of our waste bins at St Clare’s to determine areas the school is doing well in managing and reducing waste, and ways we could improve our performance. We will also be wrapping up for the end of the year, so there will be celebrations to come. If you want to be involved in these activities, drop by the Sustainability Committee! Congratulations to Jessica Schishka on being elected as our 2024 Sustainability Captain, I know that she will do a great job in leading the Committee next year. We are eager for more students to participate in the committee, so bring a friend and try it out! Abigail Cubitt Sustainability Captain

In the Classroom STCC In our first competition since the pandemic the SWITCH students in Year 7 won the 2023-2024 VEX IQ Teamwork Champion Award at this week’s VEX IQ Regional Finals for Canberra and Goulburn. By ranking with great teamwork and high scores consistently throughout the day, their scores were combined with their programming and driving skills so that they made it through the finals. Elaine and Imogen teamed up with their alliance partners from Goulburn High School to finish in first place. Bianca and Olivia finished 4th in the Teamwork Challenge and both teams are congratulated on their wonderful efforts. Planning for 2024 has already begun! Shoutout to our colleague David Kurthi at Daramalan High School for hosting the event and Bailey from St Mary Mackillop College for volunteering as a referee. Juliette Major Leader of Learning ICT and Innovation St Clare’s has been granted the opportunity to participate in a program through ACT Table Tennis. Table Tennis Australia has introduced a Para Spinneroos program that has been offered to St Clare’s College students. The program aims to inspire kids aged 5-18 to try the game for the first time and gives them the space and freedom to grow to love the game. The students that have attended have had an amazing time, filled with laughter and enjoyment. Belinda Maher Leader of Learning Inclusive Education

Languages Year 10 Japanese This term the Year 10 Japanese class have been exchanging letters with a school in Higashikawa High School in Hokkaido, Japan. In the letters they introduced themselves and discussed their town and part time work. On Friday 20 October they had they first zoom call with the class. During the zoom call, students introduced themselves and asked questions about their hobbies, interests, favourite bands, etc. The Japanese students had designed a quiz to test our Year 10 students on their cultural and vocabulary knowledge. Our students only got 2 incorrect answers and were very pleased with their knowledge. 1. Japanese people eat bear and 2. not all Japanese schools wear uniforms. Some Primary schools don’t wear uniforms. The students were very excited to talk to real Japanese students in order to practice their Japanese. We willl definitely try to zoom with the class again and keep exchanging letters. Year 7 Japanese At the beginning of term the Year 7 and 10 Japanese classes received replies from our Japanese sister school, Matsumoto Kokusai High School in Nagano. They were very excited to receive their first letter addressed to them and are in the process of writing back again. We will also be writing nengajou (New Year cards) to send before the end of the year. Year 8 French For their speaking task, the year 8 French classes had to introduce a celebrity from the Francophone world and imagine what activities they would do on the weekend from their research. To help them prepare and remember their speeches they prepared a visual as an aid for the assessment. Here are some examples: Lisa Bourne Leader of Learning Languages

Mission and Ministry Mission and Ministry Twilight Retreat The final term of this year is going to be exciting for everything Faith and Community! We started the term with our annual Twilight retreat which was an enlightening evening with many students and staff attending. The evening was filled with lots of activities such as Ice Breaker games, self-reflection questions, small group work and finishing with a beautiful liturgy. The theme of the night corresponded with our liturgical theme for 2023, “Understanding the gifts bestowed on us by God”, and a more in-depth look at our College emblem which symbolises the 12 gifts of the Holy Spirit. We had many Alumna ex-students and the MGL sisters join us during the evening to share their testimonies on how they apply the gifts of the Holy Spirit to their everyday life.

Music Ministry

Donations Week

Music Ministry has had a fantastic year. We were able to add more instruments into our ensemble as well as add a new song Lighthouse to match with our liturgical theme this year. We also were able provide beautiful music for all of our Masses this year particularly on St Clare’s day. Along with Emily and Evie we are so grateful for the year that we have had and are so excited to see what happens next year. Thank you for an amazing year, it has been a privilege to be in the role of Music Ministry Captains especially myself over the last two years. Good luck next year, Sophie!

In Weeks 1 and 2 of Term 4, students were encouraged to donate items ranging from books, clothing and toiletries, to support Home in Queanbeyan, MacKillop House, Marymead, Karinya House, and St Vincent de Paul Society. This was an excellent opportunity for the College to come together in support of these charities, which will be distributed to the following charities in the upcoming Charity Assembly to show our appreciation for all the work these charities do to support the Canberran community.

Audrey Keillor Faith and Community Captain

Mackenzie Graham Social Justice Captain Kipara and Wirana House Charity Day In Week 1, Kipara and Wirana partnered up to support the wonderful charity, Marymead. Throughout the week, there was a fun codebreaker activity for students to complete during Pastoral Care in order to learn more about Marymead. On Wednesday, we held a bake sale and prepared sausage sandwiches, nachos, and Zooper Doopers. On Thursday and Friday, students participated in bracelet making for the children at Marymead so they can have a personal item to call their own. The week was a huge success, and we are so grateful to everyone who helped bake goods and donated items to support Marymead.

Class of 1990 I left St Clare’s in 1990, and went to ANU to study Arts/Science, although I did a double major in psychology. I was invited to do further study and completed a Masters of Clinical Psychology in the second year they were offered at ANU. I am now a registered Clinical Psychologist. I have done all kinds of things with my qualification, including helping children and families with mental health difficulties; counselling and therapy with adults; supporting trans people with assessments to assist with gender-affirming treatment; supporting parents of children with disabilities; managing mental health promotion, prevention and early intervention projects; teaching primary

health care workers to support perinatal and infant mental health; and teaching the new generation of psychologists on their clinical placements and while they are in the workplace working towards registration. I have worked in rural areas and big cities and have now come back to Canberra to be near family and friends. It has been challenging and a lot of fun, and I still have quite a few friends I made while I was at St Clare’s. Now I am working in the Community Sector, where we are putting together a range of services for all ages in the Canberra community. A degree in psychology can take you to lots of different places!
