Principal’s Message

We are on the home run for 2023! Our senior students have now completed exams (Week 6) and our Year 12 students have fulfilled all elements necessary to complete their secondary education. To help them celebrate this significant milestone, Year 12s submitted suggestions for fun activities to see out their final week of school. Given that they still needed to focus on learning for the final lessons, and exam preparation, these activities needed to be fun, without impacting their ability to focus on their academic targets or causing disruption to other students or the smooth running of the College. I want to publically acknowledge and commend all our Year 12s: they entered into the spirit of celebration with joy and collegiality. The ‘bling’ on their uniforms for a day was something to behold, and while sequins, feathers, gems and ribbon doesn’t sound restrained, their creative efforts brought joy to the whole community. There was the lunch BBQ we hosted for both St Clare’s and St Edmund’s and the Friday breakfast cooked by our maintenance and teaching staff. Students projected into the dress code of their future professions and brought their materials to school in “anything but a school bag”. The last week culminated in the final Year 12 assembly and, as expected, brought the mixed emotions of joy of the end of schooling and sadness at ….. the end of schooling. While some Year 12s feel it is a time of loss of connection with their peers and their teachers, they are all welcome to stay connected through our Alumni and this is a time when social media is a real positive, allowing the girls to stay connected with their cohort and with other students. We will finish the celebrations with the Graduation on 28 November and Formal on 5 December. Not forgetting that final official certificates will be released by the BSSS and can be collected from St Clare’s on Tuesday and Wednesday, 12 & 13 December, between 2:00-5:00pm. Our Year 10 students enter their exams this week (Week 7) and we celebrate the end of their junior schooling with a High Tea at the Hyatt the following week. I encourage each Year 10 student to reflect on one or two Year 12 students they know (a connection that will be greatly enhanced from 2024 with the vertical pastoral groups) and reflect on the efforts and successes of these girls brought about through dedicated study; contributions to the life of the College e.g. through sport, social justice, arts; and their pride in the College. Each student in Year 10 is a valuable contributor to the St Clare’s community and I hope that their focus continues to the final date of school for them – 29 November. There are a number of special workshops being run after exams that aim to further our students’ knowledge and skill in how to study effectively (so important when Year 11s have ‘free’ lessons), to research and understand senior processes. There are also critical dates for data checking exams and finalisation of Year 10 Certificates. It can be a bit of a struggle for students in Years 7-9 to remain focussed when there are events, celebrations and departures of the older girls. It is important that all students attend school every day (bad habits can be created very easily) and they all need to be in the best physical and mental state to be successful learners in the final weeks. To assist our dedicated teachers and Pastoral Care leaders, it would greatly assist if parents could ensure: •

No phones in bedrooms at night time – some families have an 8pm curfew for phones to be on the kitchen bench

Ensuring the girls eat breakfast before heading to school

Catch the earliest school bus that gets them most quickly to school – minimize time at interchanges

I hope to see you at one of end of year functions. Invitations to our end of year Advent Mass and our final Awards ceremony will be with you shortly. Ann Cleary Principal

SWITCH I do not joke when I tell my friends and colleagues that I have the best job in the world. When I began my time at the College I started a journey to ensure that the young women we work with had opportunities to enter a pipeline that can lead to a career in STEM. The national shortage of women in STEM industries is a driving force for the work I do. Luckily anything to do with STEM is FUN! The students I work with have the support of my colleagues and the leadership of the College as they pursue avenues in a variety of STEM activities. Close to my heart is SWITCH. SWITCH is the St Clare’s Women in IT and Communications Hub. Formed in 2014, the extra-curricular club provides students with an opportunity to work on technology projects, enter competitions and learn with each other as they explore STEM skills and concepts. The opening of the Maker Space in the San Damiano

Learning Commons has provided a home and resources for SWITCH projects. SWITCH provides a pathway to careers in STEM and an opportunity for students continue working with technologies if their elective rotation in Digital Technologies is complete. In 2023 SWITCH has grown to 17 members with space for more. Students have opportunities presented to them such as the VEX Robotics competition, ACTURA Space and Ocean Schools, International Women’s Day Technology luncheons, the NRMA Future of Transport Challenge, entry in the AIIA iAwards, running workshops in robotics for our feeder schools, the Australian Science and Engineering Fair, as well as interstate and international travel opportunities. The SWITCH team has previously won regional robotics championships, qualified for, and won national competitions and volunteered at international events.

In 2022 the team won the She Maps Drone Tournament of the Year. This years’ success has included the Year 9 members winning the ACT iAwards with their “Light up the Roads” concept to illuminate handheld road signs for traffic controllers. The Year 7 students won the Teamwork Champion award at the VEX IQ regional competition and have now been invited to the US Create Open Robotics Competition in Omaha, Iowa in 2024. There is joy and freedom in an allgirls environment where students have the chance to experiment and learn without pressure and with support from other like-minded students and teachers. These opportunities wouldn’t be possible without the strong support St Clare’s College has from industry mentors and partners. The SWITCH students know they have people in industry to look up to and seek advice from. Mrs Sarah Louise Macdonald from Synergy Group has been mentoring the young women at the College for many years and has been one of our students’ strongest supporters. Sarah Louise has even personally donated funds to support international trips to ensure the students’ costs are lowered as they explore the opportunities to them in other countries. She provides advice, encouragement and makes connections with industry for our staff and our students. Mr Greg Boorer from Canberra Data Centres has generously provided funding this year to assist the SWITCH teams to attend the National iAwards and is again providing support for the Year 7 Robotics team to travel to the United States in 2024 for the US Create Open Robotics Championship.

16

Tidings – 2023

The cost of travel is one of the most prohibitive elements of interstate and international events and without the support of industry partners like CDC the teams would be unable to attend. The students see the impact that the support of the IT industry firsthand and feel that the work they do is important and valued by the people that they will possibly be seeking employment with in coming years. Dr Megan Clark AC is Chair of the Advisory Board of the Australian Space Agency. Dr Clark has provided personal support for the students who will be travelling to the United States in 2024 and send the following message to the students: “Congratulations to you all for winning the Canberra Goulburn Teamwork Championship in VEX IQ regional finals and earning your place to compete in the US Open Robotics Championship in Omaha, Iowa in 2024. I hope you enjoy working together and solving some really tough challenges. It is good to push ourselves to do the hard things. When we master those hard things we can then use them to make the world a better place. I hope you bring the best of yourselves and of Australia into this international championship. I look forward to hearing of your achievements.”

Our students have support as well from WIC (Women in ICT) and are invited to attend their events and participate in their work experience programs. The students see strong role models who continue to advocate for women in the IT industry. Elaine Ohlmus and Imogen Polden are the students who won the VEX IQ Regional Teamwork Championship and have been invited to the US. They said the following about the support provided by our industry mentors: “It’s a big opportunity to be able to travel to the United States and compete over there. It’s great that a role model has sponsored us to be able to travel. It’s very exciting!! We are inspired to do things in STEM and then we want to be inspiring to others.” - Imogen “It’s awesome having a strong female figure like Dr Clark support us to become strong female figures just like her. Her support is helping us travel and turn our work in robotics into something that we can use to help other people.” Elaine

“Thanks to Mrs Major’s Women in Stem club, I discovered my passion for building things. Academically I always struggled with math but when it came to building and coding, I was addicted, as I’m sure Mrs Major would second that. The trip to ACTURA Space School was like basically a “finally” moment when I knew this is what I want to do. I bought a NASA hoodie and a snow globe from the trip which sit on my desk or I wear sometimes to remind me what I’m working for. The idea of space travel and exploration are so mind boggling incredible and I want so much to be a part of that project. Despite my academic and personal setbacks, I think just seeing what my future is going to be, has made me so much more passionate than anything and my heart is entirely set on going back as an employee.” In 2024 SWITCH will celebrate its tenth year. All students are welcome to join and work with us. SWITCH meets in the Maker Space on Monday at lunchtime. Juliette Major Leader of Learning – ICT and Innovation

Mandeep Kaur is a St Clare’s alumni now studying robotics engineering at RMIT. She recently wrote the following about her opportunities in SWITCH.

The Canberra Southern Cross Club Community Rewards Grants provided quarterly sponsorship to assist the teams with registration costs and robotics parts. CSCC Members can elect to support the St Clare’s SWITCH Robotics Team with their membership and 7.5% of members’ spending at the clubs goes towards the community rewards grant. Grazing at Gundaroo has a personal connection to the College with Kurt and Tanya Neumann’s daughter being part of SWITCH. Grazing assisted with sponsorship for team tour shirts when the students travelled to Adelaide for the iAwards National event.

Mission and Ministry On Wednesday 25 October we held our annual Charity and Leadership Handover assembly. Each charity that we have supported in 2023 was given a token basket of donations from the House Leaders, Vinnies Captain or Social Justice Captain. Throughout Weeks 1 to 3 of this term we have been collecting suitable donations for Home in Queanbeyan, Karinya House, MacKillop House, Marymead and St Vincent de Paul and gaining points towards the Spirit Cup. We thank the College community for these generous donations that were gratefully accepted by each of our charities along with money raised throughout the year. We look forward to working more closely with each of these charities along with the Farm at Galong, Caritas Australia and Catholic Missions in 2024. On Friday 27 October all students involved in Mission and Ministry activities throughout 2023 came together for a Thanksgiving Afternoon Tea. Each Mission and Ministry team – Music, Social Justice, Vinnies and Youth Ministry presented an overview of the years activities followed by thank you‘s to our Year 12 students and in particular our outgoing captains; Emily Holdom, Evangeline Osborne, Sophie Smith for Music, Mackenzie Graham for Social Justice, Claudia Osborne for Vinnies and Audrey Keillor for Youth Ministry. On behalf of all members of these teams we thank them sincerely for their dedication, commitment, enthusiasm, and determination to make these teams function so successfully within our community. You have all been inspirational leaders and your legacy will live on within our community for many years to come. We also took time to welcome our incoming captains Imogen Baggoley for Music, Georgia Andrighetto for Social Justice and Julia Norgrove for Youth Ministry. We wish then every success in 2024 as they take on these important roles within our community. Marie Manning Mission and Ministry Coordinator

End of Year Arts Exhibition If you encountered a life-sized cardboard whale to crawl inside, creative remakes of popular films, and a menagerie of mythical creatures, you may have wandered into the San Damiano Learning Commons last week. The end of year exhibition remains the highlight of an eventful year that allows us to recognise and celebrate the work of our Media Arts, Photography and Visual Art students. From thought-provoking installations, traditional artworks, photography, and film, students proved that art can be a powerful medium for communicating meaning, building bridges and breaking barriers. Each piece reflected not only the technical skill but also the deep emotions, social commentary, and personal stories of the artists behind them. I would like to personally acknowledge the amazing Visual Arts Department, Adam Buck, Olivia Lebihan and Heidi Strachan. The team worked tirelessly to ensure the success of this exhibition while I was on unexpected leave. Special thanks also to Phil Coe, Cherly Talbot and the Maintenace Team, MJ Logan and The Learning Commons staff for their assistance in this massive endeavour. At St Clare’s College, we are privileged to be a part of a community that values and supports the creative arts so highly. Finally, a huge congratulations to all our talented artists, photographers, and media makers. May your artistic endeavors continue to inspire, provoke thought, and bring joy to those who have the privilege of experiencing your work. Larinda Knight Leader of Learning- Visual Arts

Performing Arts Year 12 Drama Performance On Friday 3 November, the Year 12 Drama class presented their senior Production. The students that presented created a phenomenal performance. The production elements, characterisation and execution of this piece were at such a professional standard, you would think that it was a professional touring group performing. Congratulations to these students!

Combine Colleges Band Our Combined Colleges Band had an open rehearsal in the main quad to share their wonderful sounds with our wider community. It was a lovely way for both staff and students to start their day and celebrate all the hard work our band had been putting in behind the scenes. We are looking forward to more open rehearsals in this space!

Year 8 Reflection Day On Wednesday 1 November, all of Year 8 participated in their reflection day based on our Liturgical Theme “Understanding the gifts bestowed on us by God”. We started the day with some “get to know you” activities followed by a very interesting seminar presented to us by Becks from Your Choicez. The seminar focussed on the importance of establishing strong, healthy relationships in our lives and covered a range of intriguing topics like staying safe online and showing empathy towards others. The afternoon session included an inspiring video, “The Butterfly Circus,” all about overcoming challenges, followed by group discussion on the gifts and fruits of the Holy Spirit.

Mrs Manning led us in a liturgy where we picked a fruit of the Holy Spirit that we need to work on and made a commitment to act this out in our daily interactions. We finished the day by creating personalised bags to put our Vinnies Christmas gifts in for Vinnies Joeys. All in all, the day was a huge success! Julia and Georgia Year 8 SRC

Senior Performing Arts Trip Our annual Performing Arts excursion took the senior dance, drama and music students to Sydney to view Disney’s Beauty and the Beast and the 20th anniversary performance of Wicked the musical. Each year this trip offers our students the opportunity to view live works that combine all skill sets taught in the classroom and seen through to a professional setting. It was a thoroughly enjoyable experience for all! Floriade This year St Clare’s College had over 90 students perform at Floriade. Dance students from Years 9-12 (including Mrs Pearce’s Dance Ensemble) presented their student led works, inspired by this year’s theme “Floral Wonderland”. Our combined college Band also performed a number of pieces they have been working on over the last year. This performance was a first for some of our students and we are incredibly proud of how brave they were in front of a live audience. They represented the very best of our wonderful school.

The painting workshop was led by Mrs Katrina Cambridge, Teaching and Learning Officer for Aboriginal Education at Catholic Education. We painted gum leaves using a variety of colours and techniques, which were arranged into the beautiful artwork (pictured). It was a fun, relaxed afternoon focused on friendship and sharing of culture. Michelle Burg Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Contact Person

Defence School Mentor In Week 5, the St Clare’s Defence community encouraged the school to join them to craft poppies and write postcards to deployed personnel. The poppies were displayed on the windows of the Learning Commons and we talked about the sacrifices made by serving personnel to step out of their day to day lives and be deployed. On Friday the 10th, the school commemorated Remembrance Day by taking part in a whole school service and a minute of silence led by Year 8 students, Charlee McIntyre, Julia Butler and Matilda Rootes. At lunch on Friday there was a military display which allowed students the opportunity to explore some of the equipment used in World War One and compare it to some items that are issued today. The memorabilia was generously lent to the school by the Australian War Memorial. Thank you to the students that created the poppies, they made a beautiful display. WAATI Italian exchange – Sending program The following Year 10 and 11 students are participating in the WAATI Italian Exchange program and will be departing to various parts of Italy on Sunday November 26th. They will spend two months living in an Italian family and attending high school, fully immersing themselves in the Italian language and culture. We would like to wish Siena Goodwin, Olivia Hicks, Chloe Roughley, and Lauren Russell the best of luck as they embark on this exciting adventure.

Name: Alessia Di Antonio

I also speak/ know: English (learner) Why I became a language assistant: The love for my native language and the curiosity to learn about other cultures around the world led me to this country so far from Italy. I have always wanted to travel and get to know new places, looking for situations where I could get involved and that would help me hone my skills. Teaching is a path that, in addition to great challenges, offers me extraordinary opportunities for personal enrichment and enormous rewards every day. The most interesting part of my work is undoubtedly the comparison and search for strategies to adopt to best transmit the language to students. I hope that in these months I can be a valid resource to help spread the teaching of the Italian language and culture as best as possible.

VET Update

University of Canberra Explore Day – May 2024 We are hoping to be able to take all Year 10, 2024 students to UC for a day of exploring UC campus, courses and university life which proved to be a valuable experience for many of our current Year 10 students this year.

I take this opportunity to wish Bridgid Sutton, our Leader of Learning – Vocational Education and Training all the best as she pursues her passions and interests at a new school. She will commence her new role at the end of November. Bridgid will leave a large gap in our VET support but should students need assistance this year, please direct queried to Trish Brown: careers@stcc.act.edu.au Trish Brown LOL Career and Future Pathways

Weekend Netball WEEKEND NETBALL SEASON 2023 We are extremely proud of our weekend netballers who took to the courts this winter season at South Canberra Netball Association. This year around 180 students played weekend netball across 19 teams, making it the College’s largest cocurricular program. Around 70 volunteer coaches, managers, umpires and staff supported the program and enabled the girls to play each week. The season took place from April to September, without a rain cancellation (or COVID lockdown) in sight! Thank you to our families for their spirit of cooperation to field teams each week, especially when teams were short of players. Special thanks to our coaches, managers and umpires for the time, energy and dedication you give to our players. You are the reason they have the opportunity to play and your efforts are much appreciated. Many thanks to the staff who have organised and supported the program and volunteered their time on Saturdays to support teams – Mrs Sepi Hawke, Mrs Lisa Bourne, Mr David Garrity, Mr Sam Lewis and Mr Josh Freeman. We acknowledge and celebrate the achievements of all teams. We had teams qualify for five out of the seven intermediates and cadets division grand finals – an incredible effort. Special congratulations to our grand finalists: STCC Orioles (Intermediates 2a), STCC Tactix (Intermediates 2b), STCC Steel (Intermediates 3), STCC Giants (Cadets 2) and STCC Firebirds (Cadets 3). An amazing grand final day saw Tactix and Magic claim victories; while Orioles, Steel and Firebirds were valiant runners-up. A great night of celebration was had at the Celebration of Sports event at the College on 2 November, where teams and families came together to celebrate season 2023 and the award winners across all teams. Award winners are listed below. Congratulations to all players and coaches for a great season. Best wishes to our graduating Year 12 players, thank you for your participation and contribution to weekend netball over the years. We look forward to seeing everyone else again next year.
