THE LRC CATALOGUE HAS A NEW USER INTERFACE!

WHAT IS THE LRC CATALOGUE? The LRC (Learning Resource Centre) catalogue is an online list of all the resources in the College’s LRC.

WHY SHOULD I USE THE LRC CATALOGUE? To find resources in the LRC! Knowing how to use the catalogue helps you to search for resources effectively - no need to browse the bookshelves for relevant resources, or queue at the issue desk just to check the availability of a book!

The ability to effectively find and search for relevant resources is a crucial skill for successful independent study at university level.

ACCESS TO THE LRC CATALOGUE College Portal Click on the ‘Learning Resource Centre (LRC)’ link You’ll be taken to the St Charles LRC/Library website. Click on the second link to access the LRC catalogue.

HOW TO SEARCH FOR RESOURCES Book Search by Author Click on the ‘Build a search’ button

Enter the author’s name in the ‘Author’ field, e.g. ‘Malorie Blackman’ and click on the ‘Go’ button.

NB: Searches are NOT case sensitive, so you can enter words in lower case.

The author search for ‘Malorie Blackman’ returns 14 results. However, if you were to enter the author’s name into the main search box, you would get 15 results. This happens because the author search has found all of the resources with ‘Malorie Blackman’ as the author ONLY whereas the main search box finds the name in ALL areas, e.g. author, title, keyword etc.

Book Search by Title Just like the author search, click on the ‘Build a search’ button, enter the title of the book, e.g. ‘The Great Gatsby’, and then click on ‘Go’.

NB: ‘The Great Gatsby’ is entered as ‘great gatsby’ without ‘The’. You can search for titles by omitting articles such as ‘A’, ‘An’ and ‘The’.

UNDERSTANDING YOUR SEARCH RESULTS ON THE LRC CATALOGUE When you click on an item in your search results, the shelf location of your resource can be found after ‘Shelved at’. On the next page, Pearson Edexcel A-level politics: Political ideas is shelved at 320 MOG which means you will find it in the politics section (320) under MOG which is the first three letters of the author’s surname.

All books have a spine label attached showing their shelf location.

NB: Check the ‘Availability’ of your book. This record shows there are 2 books, but 1 is ‘On Loan’ which means it has been borrowed. There is now only 1 copy of the book available on the shelf.

The available book is ‘Reference only’ which means it can only be used in the LRC and cannot be borrowed.

Each subject based resource is assigned its own shelfmark, e.g. 320 MOG, which is shown on the spine label.

HOW THE LRC IS ARRANGED To ensure that you find resources effectively, the LRC uses the Dewey Decimal Classification (DDC) scheme to organise its materials. The DDC scheme arranges resources numerically. The information below shows some of the different subject areas.
