Students hit the stage While Suzanne Cory High School’s upcoming performance of ‘Working’ drew inspiration from the Studs Terkel book of interviews with American workers, the schools musical production director Helena Hall says the audience can expect a more “localised version”. The original story aimed to highlight workers often taken for granted such as school teachers, phone operators, and waitresses. Ms Hall said the school’s production will combine the original script with new stories. “I have interviewed six local (Melbourne and surrounds) workers from a range of different professions and then used their responses to write new material for our students to perform,” she said. Ms Hall hopes localising the story will help the audience to better connect with the material and ideas in the show. “How often do we stop to think about the people who built the room we’re sitting in? Or who made the clothes we wear?” ‘Working’ will be performed from August 4-6 at Suzanne Cory High School in Werribee. Charlize and Nakeisha preparing for ‘Working’.

Outer suburbs affordable The outer suburbs, including Wyndham Vale and Werribee, are still ranking as some of the most affordable areas in Melbourne, Real Estate Institute of Victoria (REIV) data reveals. According to the REIV, Wyndham Vale recorded the municipality’s highest house price increase in the three months to June, with the median price rising 7.9 per cent to $580,000. Despite the rise, the suburb’s median price is still significantly less than the metropolitan

Melbourne median on $1.08 million. Reliance Manor Lakes director Taney Jain said a high infrastructure growth in the area could be behind the 7.9 per cent increase. “There’s a lot of development in terms of new shopping centres and new schools being built around,” Mr Jain. “[There are also] so many other developers around Wyndham Vale, all these developers are contributing to infrastructure growth.” Other suburbs to record a quarterly price increase include Point Cook (2.5 per cent, median price $770,000) Tarneit (0.7 per cent, median $665,000) and Hoppers Crossing (0.4

per cent, median price $653,000) Williams Landing, Manor Lakes, Werribee and Truganina listed price declines at -14.7 per cent, -4.3 per cent, -3.2 per cent, and -1.3 per cent respectively. The median sale price for Williams Landing was $751,000, $646,000 in Manor Lakes, $600,000 in Werribee and $648,000 in Truganina. Mr Jain believes increasing interest rates contributed to many people being “spooked” away from the housing market. “That actually scared off the people … the last interest change was a 50 [basis] point
increase, which has brought the official cash rate to 1.35 per cent,” he said. “The people who want to upsize, they are scared that if they sell [their homes] and buy their next property, of course they’re going to get a price cheaper, but they’re going to pay the higher interest rate as well.” REIV president Richard Simpson said Melbourne had recorded an “over 23 per cent increase in home prices over the last two years”. “As expected, we saw a slight decrease in metro Melbourne as the market adapts to the current rising interest rate environment.” 12557818-HC29-22
