Metro to the rescue

A much-loved Yarraville cat, Mooncake, has been rescued by Metro train workers after wandering from his home. Mooncake was spotted injured near Seddon train station. A driver alerted authorised officers who found Mooncake and drove him to U-Vet Werribee Animal Hospital where he underwent emergency surgery for a fractured skull and jaw. Mooncake lost an eye, but his owner says he is recovering and adapting well. Lesley Friend said she wanted to thank Metro’s train driver and authorised officers for saving Mooncake. “We’re very thankful that we got Mooncake back and that he’s alive and that he [the train driver] basically saved his life,” she said. “He’s a big part of our family.” Metro’s Wayne Boyd said the safety of all public transport users, including cats, was a priority. “We saw that little Mooncake needed immediate help and didn’t waste any time,” he said. “I was really pleased when I heard that Mooncake had pulled through.” Goya Dmytryshchak

New million dollar suburbs By Goya Dmytryshchak Altona and West Footscray have joined the million dollar club, with the median house price cracking $1 million. The May median house value for Altona was $1,022,585 (up from $983,599 12 months ago) and $1,018,794 (up from $919,227) for West Footscray, CoreLogic’s Million Dollar Markets report for June shows. “The current upswing in the Australian housing market has produced some extraordinary results,” the report states. “In the 12 months to May 2021, national dwelling market values increased 10.6 per cent,

marking the highest growth rate since July 2010. “The value of the national dwelling market hit a record high in January 2021, and has continued to hit a fresh record high each month since. “The wealth effect of house value increases has likely been a key component of elevated consumer confidence, and Australia’s economic recovery from strict social distancing restrictions through 2020.” Altona and West Footscray made the top 40 million-dollar markets in metropolitan Melbourne. West unemployment rate rises By Alesha Capone Melbourne’s west recorded the highest unemployment rate within the metropolitan area during April, according to the Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS). About 42,100 residents of the western suburbs (8.8 per cent) were unemployed during April, compared to about 35,700 people for the same time in 2020. The south-eastern suburbs had the next highest unemployment rate, with about 26,200 people (5.4 per cent) out of work in April.

In June last year, businesses in the 3029 and 3030 postcodes, which includes Hoppers Crossing, Tarneit, Truganina Derriumt, Point Cook, Werribee and Werribee South, lodged a combined total of 6953 applications for the federal government’s JobKeeper wage subsidy program – the highest number of applications in the state outside of Melbourne. The JobKeeper subsidy ended in March, although a media release from the ABS said that “the end of the JobKeeper wage subsidy did not have a discernible impact on employment between March and April”.

During the first COVID-19 pandemic lockdown last year, the Wyndham Park Community Centre (WPCC) in Werribee established the volunteer-run Birdcage Community Store for residents in need of food and other necessities. WPCC manager Greg Ferrington said that in the past 12 months there has been “a dramatic increase in the number of people accessing our community store due to loss of work or a reduction in their hours”. “The impact of the pandemic on Wyndham was significant as many community members

work in the service industries,” he said. Mr Ferrington said other Wyndham centres have also experienced an increase in the number of residents needing access to food. WPCC is rolling out a community pantry program across its fellow neighbourhood houses, community centres and some schools. “We saw these pantries as a way of supporting these community members, for a day or two, until they could get to a more established food program elsewhere in the city,” Mr Ferrington said.

Western Health and Djerriwarrh Health services will become one, with the state government approving an amalgamation of the two services. The two health providers announced in March they had agreed to a voluntary amalgamation, which was ticked off last week. It follows two years of extensive community and staff consultation across both health services and communities. It is hoped the voluntary amalgamation will ensure a greater co-ordination of health services across the west, improve access to health services while focusing on the community’s future healthcare needs. Western Health and Djerriwarrh Health Services currently service the healthcare needs of 985,000 people from Footscray and Williamstown to Bacchus Marsh, employing more than 7600 workers across 13 sites. The new health service will operate Sunshine Hospital, Joan Kirner Women’s and Children’s Hospital and the Caroline Springs Community Health Centre and the proposed Melton Hospital. As part of the merger, $5.5 million will be invested to redevelop the Grant Lodge Aged Care Facility in Bacchus Marsh. All Djerriwarrh staff will have continued employment. Health Minister Martin Foley said the merger comes after a long and mutually beneficial partnership “It will deliver more services and better care for Melbourne’s growing west.” Tara Murray

Briefs Appeal follows toddler death Police are appealing for footage after a 19-month-boy was struck by a car in Altona and later died in hospital. Police believe he was riding a scooter along the footpath in McAlpine Court when he was hit by a slow-moving vehicle pulling out of a driveway about 9.15am last Wednesday. New justices of peace sign on By Goya Dmytryshchak Hobsons Bay is getting 20 new justices of the peace, (JP) taking some workload off the police. Their appointments will be celebrated with a tour of Williamstown Police station next month. Westgate Royal Victorian Association of Honorary Justices co-ordinator Loretta Cormack oversees document signing stations at Williamstown and Altona police stations, Altona RSL and Altona Meadows library.

“The Department of Justice and Community Safety has rightly noted that we do need a new infusion of JPs, particularly since the police are tied up with other things,” she said. “The appointment of more JPs in our area is long overdue. “They will play a big part in the future of providing services for the Hobsons Bay community. “We’re there as a courtesy and we take an awful lot of work away from police – we relieve them so that they can get out and do the job they’re supposed to do instead of

signing paperwork. “They tell me that we do a lot of work and we take a lot of work off their shoulders.” JPs offer their time voluntarily. People may access the services of a JP by attending a document signing station or contacting an individual JP in their area.

Children from Gowrie Clare Court kindergarten have helped create a new frog pond area with more than 500 plants on the bank of Stony Creek in Cruickshank Park. The new area, at the Drew Street footbridge at Yarraville, aims to create new habitats for frogs, birds and other animals. It forms part of plans to restore the habitat and biodiversity, being undertaken by Maribyrnong council, Melbourne Water and the Environment Protection Authority. The area around the pond, filled with aquatic and semi-aquatic native plants, has been fenced off to help protect wildlife. Mayor Michael Clarke said the initiative followed recent work undertaken with Melbourne Water to build a footbridge over Stony Creek, near Cala Street at West Footscray, and plant 4000 natives. “Cruickshank Park is a much-loved open space in our community and I am thrilled to

Family violence referrals soar By Goya Dmytryshchak and Alesha Capone Family violence referrals from Victoria Police to Women’s Health West reached record highs during the COVID-19 pandemic. WHW, which services Maribyrnong, Hobsons Bay, Brimbank, Wyndham, Melton, Moonee Valley and Melbourne, received 13,272 police referrals between March 1, 2020, and February 28, 2021 – the most it has ever received in a 12-month period. This was an increase of 12 per cent from the same period in 2019-20, when WHW received 11,830 family violence referrals from police.

WHW chief executive Robyn Gregory said it was important for people experiencing family violence to know they could seek help during the pandemic. “Violence is never acceptable in the home and a pandemic is not an excuse for violence,” she said. Laverton Community Integrated Services chief executive Michael Pernar said his charity, which provided crisis intervention services, had been overwhelmed by family violence reports. “What we’re really seeing is a lot of domestic violence that seems to just be scrubbed under the carpet,” he said.

“When someone’s in a domestic violence [situation], they know that we’ll be compassionate, that we’ll walk them through it, link them to the appropriate agencies – but the sad thing is those agencies are inundated.”

Family violence incidents reported to police for the year to March rose from 917 to 933 (1.7 per cent) in the city of Maribyrnong and dropped from 1102 to 1064 (3.4 per cent) in Hobsons Bay. Hobsons Bay recorded 459 breaches of

Man jailed over Footscray bashing By Goya Dmytryshchak A man has been jailed for two and a half years and faces deportation to South Sudan for bashing a man at Footscray. Ngor Akok was this month sentenced in the County Court after pleading guilty to recklessly causing serious injury and committing an indictable offence on bail. Akok, 20, attacked the victim, 34, last September. In his sentencing remarks, Judge Justin Hannebery said the victim suffered life-threatening injuries, was hospitalised for seven months and is now cared for by his mother.

“The victim in this matter was at a rotunda in Railway Reserve, Footscray, with one other person,” he said. “At 4.13pm, you entered that rotunda with another person and yelled aggressively at the victim and his companion. “You pushed and pulled the victim and grabbed him by the arms. He covered his face and tried to walk away, but you followed him. “At 4.17pm, you struck the victim to the left side of his head, caused him to drop to the knees. “You punched him three times to the head. It was these blows to the head that caused the serious injury. “You also made an attempt to kick the victim

to the stomach, but it is unclear if that kick connected. You then grabbed the victim in a headlock. Whilst holding him in this position, you kicked his legs out from underneath him, [causing] him to fall to the ground. “The victim’s companion told you to stop. You left the rotunda and walked towards Footscray train station. “The victim was helped to his feet and was walked by his companion to Nicholson Street, Footscray. “The victim was found at approximately 4.55pm laying on the ground in a laneway with his eyes closed. He was not moving or making any noises.”

The injured man was taken to Footscray Hospital and then transferred to The Royal Melbourne Hospital, where he twice underwent skull and brain surgery. At the time of offending, Akok was on a community corrections order for charges including unlawful assault and breaching a family violence intervention order. He was also on two sets of bail for possessing cannabis and shop theft. Akok must serve one year and nine months before being eligible for parole. He is in Australia on a humanitarian visa, which will be cancelled unless the relevant minister intervenes.

Need a coat? Maribyrnong libraries are sharing some warmth this winter with their Need a Coat campaign. People can drop off and pick up coats as part of the council’s annual coat drive. Maribyrnong council is calling on community members to drop off unwanted winter woollies at one of the municipality’s five libraries. Mayor Michael Clarke said the campaign was a way for members of the community to support each other. “Our community thrives when we support each other,” he said. “As we head into the colder months, the Need a Coat program is a great way to get behind and support your neighbour. “I encourage you all to dig into your wardrobes and pull out those coats and jackets that have already served you well, and give

them a new life with someone in need.” Now in its third year, the Need a Coat drive enables pre-loved garments and smaller items such as beanies, gloves and scarves to be passed on to someone in need. Anyone needing a coat can pick one up from the racks at Footscray, Braybrook or West Footscray libraries. People can also donate coats, jackets, scarves and other winter clothing. Coat racks are now available at Braybrook and Footscray libraries and will be at West Footscray library from Monday, July 5. By Goya Dmytryshchak A West Footscray Filipino international student has started a social enterprise after losing his job during the COVID-19 pandemic. Ryan Sta Maria had been studying commercial cooking at William Angliss Institute when the coronavirus hit and he lost his job in a pastry shop. “When I realised I didn’t qualify for any COVID relief and losing my job in June, I was faced with some of the effects this pandemic has had on us all,” he said. “But I also believe the pandemic brought opportunity to me – it taught me to be more fruitful and be more resourceful in my everyday life.

“Everyone has their own struggles … we all pray and do our part for it to be over, we all try to continue as best we can with what we have. “Everything happens for a reason. As Churchill once said, ‘An optimist sees opportunity in every calamity’. “I choose to be that optimist by using my time to start a small online business after losing my job. “I have kept myself afloat and have already gained a great reputation within the Aust/Filo community.” Mr Sta Maria established social enterprise, Spice of Life Gourmet, selling gourmet tuyo [dried fish] and other Filipino products. “The main difference to other for-profit businesses is that I commit part of Spice of Life

City of Maribyrnong residents will have their recycling and food and garden waste bins inspected between now and September. The council will be doing “visual checks” to “identify common recycling issues, and help residents avoid making mistakes with their recycling and waste management”. Tags will be placed on bins to advise residents of misplaced items. The council said when the wrong items were placed in bins, it could contaminate the whole load and send it to landfill. Common contaminants include plastic bags and soft plastic packaging, broken glass from cups, glasses and mirrors, electrical waste, batteries and textiles. Food and garden waste bins are currently an opt-in service but will be rolled out to all single detached dwellings (houses) later this year. Construction continues at the Williamstown Road interchange During 2021

West Gate Tunnel Project crews have been building foundations to support two new ramps above the Williamstown Road interchange. The new ramps will connect the West Gate Freeway to Hyde Street and take trucks off local roads by providing a direct connection to industrial areas in the inner-west. What’s happening next Crews are moving into the next major stage of works which will require regular overnight closures of the interchange. Closing the interchange will provide crews the space they need to safely set up and operate the crane and for large trucks to deliver the bridge beams onto site. Campaign to curb knife crime By Tara Murray Crime Stoppers Victoria, police and medical professionals are calling on young people to think about the consequences of carrying a knife. A joint campaign, ‘Lose the Knife, Not a Life’, highlights several incidents where a young person has been seriously injured or killed due to knife violence. A teenager has been charged with murder after the stabbing of 17-year-old Bless Mulukwat Akoch at Eagle Stadium in Werribee

in May, while 11 teenagers are facing murder charges following the stabbing of 15-year-old Solomone Taufeulungaki in Deer Park in June last year. Crime Stoppers Victoria chief executive Stella Smith is asking young people to stop picking up a knife. “If you use a knife to hurt someone, that person will either retaliate or suffer a serious injury,” she said. “Either way, two young lives are at risk. One is at risk of ending up in prison and the other is at risk of being killed.”

As part of the campaign, the Alfred Hospital has released a video to help young people understand the serious health and safety risks involved in carrying a knife. Alfred deputy head of trauma Dr Meei Yeung says despite what young people may think, there’s no such thing as a safe stab injury. North West Metro Region Assistant Commissioner Luke Cornelius said one life cut short is one life too many. He called for parents to talk with their children if they do come across a knife.

“Police will catch them sooner or later and they will be in serious trouble,” he said. “Worse, if they use it, the consequences are devastating – for the victim, the families and even for the young offender. “Carrying a knife for self-defence is illegal. Bringing a knife to a fight is illegal. Using a knife to threaten someone is illegal. “The odds are that if a young person has one on them, sooner or later they will use it. Play, cafe combination People are being encouraged to play and dine out in Maribyrnong these school holidays, with some cafes near popular parks offering discounts. The Victorian Senior of the Year Awards are part of the annual Victorian Seniors Festival. The festival featured as a “reimagined” special for 2020 as a response to the COVID-19 pandemic. The reimagined festival took physical distancing into account, and was broadcast straight into people’s homes. The festival featured 131 video performances, and interviews with 146 performers, and had more than 160,000 virtual visitors to its website. The festival will be back in person in October 2021, to celebrate award recipients and their achievements.

or more than 20 years, the Victorian Senior of the Year Awards have celebrated the efforts of older Victorians to support, assist and encourage others within their communities. Disability, Ageing and Carers Minister Luke Donnellan said the awards will hold a “special meaning” in 2021, following the COVID-19 pandemic during which many seniors managed to maintain their involvement in community service despite lockdowns and uncertainty. “The Victorian Senior of the Year Awards is our opportunity to celebrate the invaluable contributions senior Victorians make to our state,” Mr Donnellan said. “It is more important than ever to thank these incredible seniors for sharing their skills, experience and time with the community.” Award categories include: Premier’s Award for Victorian Senior of the Year; Promotion of Multiculturalism Award; Healthy and Active Living Award; Ageing Well Award; COTA Victorian Senior Awards; and the Veteran Community Award. Peter Burquest was the recipient of the 2019 Veteran Community Award and is a Vietnam War veteran. He was nominated as an acknowledgement of his volunteer service to the Australian veteran community and his commitment in supporting young Victorians who come from underprivileged backgrounds. Mr Burquest said he was surprised to be nominated for the “great honour”. “There are so many people in the community looking after our senior citizens on a voluntary basis,” he said. “I’m a little bit humbled by [the award]. “I’m enjoying what I’m doing, and I think whilst the award was a bit more than I was expecting myself, it’s good for the community,

and nice recognition of the work I’ve done. “Many people are as worthy of such an award similar to this, if we just look at the bigger picture.” Mr Burquest co-founded the Caroline Springs RSL Sub-branch, which he said was the beginning of his extensive involvement in the community. “That was the yardstick that kicked me off on being involved with more senior veterans,” he said. “The RSL’s been really important for me in keeping up with the community. “We have quite a number of senior members on our list – war widows and ex-service persons – many who are not required to pay membership.

“Seniors have made an important contribution to communities, they have been integral in the development of this country and we, the country, owe a lot to them. “They’ve paid their taxes, they’ve done the hard yards, they just sometimes need some help, and we should be available to make that happen. “COVID has presented some real challenges, for our more senior socially-isolated group particularly, but we’ve been there to assist via our welfare visits/phone calls and small food packages during the long lockdown.” The sub-branch now boasts 258 members, and a turnover of about $300,000 a year. Mr Burquest said establishing the sub-branch from the ground up was “probably my greatest

community achievement”. “The development of the RSL was a hell of a ride for me in the early days, for nobody had any experience in starting a sub-branch,” he said. “Having started a brand new RSL, and not taking over something already established, it proved to be quite difficult. “Our purpose was to assist young troops returning from Afghanistan [and] Iraq as well as the roles mentioned above.” Each award nominee receives a certificate acknowledging their work. Award recipients are honoured at Government House at the Victorian Seniors Festival in October each year. Nominations for the awards close on Friday, July 9. Work-related expenses on the radar The Australian Taxation Office (ATO) expects work-related expenses will reflect the change in many people’s work situations during the COVID-19 pandemic. “Our data analytics will be on the lookout for unusually high claims this tax time,” ATO’s assistant commissioner Tim Loh has said. “We will look closely at anyone with significant working from home expenses, that maintains or increases their claims for things like car, travel or clothing expenses. “You can’t simply copy and paste previous years’ claims without evidence.” The ATO advises that some unusual claims may be legitimate, and people with evidence to explain the claims have nothing to fear. It acknowledges that tax rules can be confusing and mistakes can be made. To claim any work-related expense, you must have spent the money yourself and not been reimbursed by your employer. The expense needs to be directly related to earning your income (not a private expense), and you need to keep relevant records, such as receipts.

more enlightened countries. It can be raised manually. The original Audi TT was offered with 1.8-litre four-cylinder engines, in either light-pressure or high-pressure turbocharger. The higher-powered variants have the traction advantage of Audi’s quattro all-wheel drive. The capacity of the four-cylinder unit was increased to 2.0 litres using a turbocharged with the second-generation TT. In December 2004, a 3.2-litre V6 was squeezed under the bonnet of the Audi TT coupe, but not the roadster. The V6 also received the quattro system. A five-cylinder 2.5-litre RS engine with quattro was added to the range late in 2009. Straight-line performance is good in even the smaller-engined models due to the TT’s relatively light weight. A six-speed manual was used in TT quattros from the start. Front-drive cars had five-speed manual gearboxes until August 2005, when a six-speed manual arrived. No automatic transmission was offered until

March 2003, when a six-speed torque-converter auto was offered with the low-pressure engines. A six-speed double-clutch (S tronic in Audi speak) is fitted to the Audi TT 3.2 quattro. Early generation double-clutch gearboxes can be painful at very low speeds, such as when parking. Test drive one in stop-start conditions to see what you think. Audi TT is a high-tech car and should only be serviced and repaired by professionals. Good amateurs can tackle some of the routine maintenance work should they be so inclined. Spare parts prices aren’t cheap, but are in keeping with others in this class. Check on insurance as premiums vary quite a bit, though this seems to be settling into mid-range figures in recent years. Check the engine starts quickly, even when it’s stone cold. If there are any doubts try to arrange to come back first thing in the morning to have it completely cold.

Gearchanges should be reasonably light, but remember the gearbox is a long way from the shift lever. This can give it a slightly spongy feel in older models. Look for signs of previous crash repairs. A ripply finish in any of the panels, or a mismatch in paint colour from one section to the other are fairly easy to spot. If there’s the slightest concern about possible crash history either get a full professional inspection - or find another TT. Check the roadster’s roof seals correctly when it is closed and that it doesn’t have any tears or cuts. Look at the carpets and the floor under them for the slightest sign of dampness. Uneven tyre wear at the front possibly indicates hard driving, or it may mean the TT has thumped kerbs. Both cause for concern.

The very stylish Audi TT was launched in1998. It had fascinating style and created a great deal of attention, from the motoring press and car lovers in general. The domed exterior lines of the body carry through to the cabin, with large circular dials and ventilation outlets. Audi TT first reached Australia in May 1999. The second-generation TT, introduced Down Under in November 2006, wasn’t as striking in its shape. That changed with the launch of the third generation here in February 2015, seeing the TT go back to a restyle of the original. Used versions of the first-generation Audi TT are getting on in years, but one with a clean service record and sensible driving is worth considering. Despite having the underpinnings of a VW Golf major repairs can be expensive. Audi TT is great fun to drive but, in the front-drive models feels more like a warm hatch than a full-on sports model. The third generation was launched in 2014. It is based on the Volkswagen Group’s MQB platform.In the early years there were several fatal high-speed Audi TT crashes in Europe, principally in Germany. These were caused by a design flaw. The aerodynamics weren’t quite right and the problem was exacerbated by the TT’s very short wheelbase. Later models were modified in their suspension and have a rear wing to push the tail to the road at speed. The wing spoils the purity of the visual effect in the eyes of TT purists. Lexus upgrades the LX 570 By Ewan Kennedy, Marque Motoring Lexus has upgraded and given a facelift to its LX 570 S SUV. A block-mesh insert for the spindle grille replaces the previous wire-mesh insert. This gives it a similar pattern to that on the flagship Sports Luxury grade of the Lexus RX. The front bumper skirts have also been revised, with horizontal lines removed from the outer section of the skirts. Again, following others in the Lexus range, two-tone wheels with a silver fascia and gloss black inserts similar to those in the Lexus LC sports car. It has a moulded ‘S’ badge on the tailgate. Exterior colours include Sonic Quartz and Starlight Black. Inside, the luxury semi-aniline perforated leather trim is available in Black or, exclusively for this model, a rich burgundy colour named Garnet. Shimamoku Grey ornamentation is also unique to the LX 570 S. The Lexus LX 570 S has a 5.7-litre V8 engine with 270kW of power and 530Nm of torque, and an eight-speed automatic transmission. It can tow up to 3500kg (braked). All that power and towing ability means that it has twin fuel tanks that hold 138 litres of petrol.

Monaro Maro wins a thriller By Tim O’Connor In a period when Long Forest trainer Andy Gath is searching for his next great squaregaiter, Monaro Maro reminded everyone of just how good she is with victory in a thrilling and action-packed IRT Australia Matriarch Trot. The race at Tabcorp Park Melton had been billed as a beauty since the release of the fields early in the week, and it delivered in spades with early and mid-race moves setting up a good speed at the top end. And it was Monaro Maro who benefitted, with driver Kate Gath following up Pink Galahs when she eventually worked to the lead, parking outside for the last lap. Mattie Craven’s charge shot for home approaching the final turn, allowing the Gath Racing runner to drop in behind for a breather before peeling back out, hitting the front and staving off a wall of horses. The daughter of Superfast Stuart denied Keayang Livana back-to-back wins in the race, with Margaret Lee’s mare flying home for second ahead of third-placed Illawong Stardust. Amazingly, just 3.8m separated the first six trotters across the line. Despite the Group 2 success, Gath felt Monaro Maro wasn’t at her absolute best and expected a spell to be on the cards. “I think maybe if she was at her best, she probably would have won a little bit easier. She got around at the perfect time – even though Pink Galahs went in front of her and did have to make her work a little bit harder – but once we got there we could walk after that and she was able to win the race,” the star reinswoman said. Monaro Maro, who prevailed in a mile rate of 1:58.6min, has now won 18 of 69 career starts for close to $200,000 in prizemoney.

SPORT Young academy stars join state netball squads Two Maribyrnong Sports Academy students have been selected in the starting squad for the Victorian under-17 netball team, which will play at the national championships in Tasmania in July. Year 12 student Kiralee Collings and year 11 student Akira McCormack were selected in the under-17 state team, while Montaya Sardi was selected in the under-17 development squad. Collings outlined her journey. “I started off playing at Sunbury Netball Association where I had played domestic and then progressed into the Sunbury rep team under-11s, she said. “I then went to a development City West Falcons VNL camp for under-11s where a squad was selected for 12 players to play in a tournament coached by Marg Lind and Nicole Richardson, who at that time were the head coaches of Maribyrnong Sports Academy Netball program. “In year 7, I trialled for the under-12 School

Sport Victoria state team and unfortunately missed out. A few years later, I tried out for the under-15 team and made it. “I was named captain and we came away with a silver medal. That was the best experience. “I have made lifelong friends from other states and I felt so honoured to be wearing the

navy blue representing my state. “Maribyrnong College has really influenced my journey in netball, with all of the amazing coaches that I have had (Eloise Southby and Brooke Littlepage). These two coaches have helped me with my skills, attitude, leadership and fitness. Without them I wouldn’t be where I am today.” McCormack said she “fell in love with netball straight away”. “At the age of nine, I was selected in my first rep team, Westside Saints, and then at the age of 12 I received a scholarship at Maribyrnong Sports Academy,” she said. “I believe this has helped me with my netball, “There are a number of things that I have accomplished: Victorian Netball League at the age of 15, zone academy at the age of 17 and in the Central West Victoria zone for three years from 2018-2021, and most recently selection in the Netball Victoria under-17 state team.” Sardi said her netball career started at age 11,

when she filled in for a netball team at Hoppers Crossing Netball Club. “I then realised how much I enjoy playing netball,” she said. “After a year, I started playing at Altona for Sanctuary Lakes, when I won best and fairest. “It made me realise that I love playing this sport and I want to further my journey in netball. “In year 7, I was accepted into Maribyrnong College Sports Academy where I have been able to improve my skills and be the best possible athlete, coached and mentored by Eloise Southby. “Maribyrnong Sports Academy has helped me improve my ability to play netball at a higher level and love to sport that I play.” Victoria hasn’t won the championships since 2014 – South Australia has dominated, winning four of the past five championships. Winning return to the court

By Benjamin Millar Western Jets rising star Jemima Woods has taken a big step on the path to the AFLW, snaring a highly sought invite to the competition’s key pre-draft talent showcase. The gun Bacchus Marsh teen, who has also pulled on the jersey for the Western Bulldogs VFLW, is one of a handful of NAB League players invited to attend the AFLW Draft Combine, which puts prospects through their paces prior to the NAB AFL Women’s Draft at the end of July. Woods, 18, said she is excited by the opportunity to demonstrate she can mix it with some of the game’s best. “It was pretty surprising as not many girls got picked this year,” she said. “At the start of the NAB league season it was my goal to get to this point, so it feels pretty good.” The journey for the talented forward and midfielder stretches back to involvement in Auskick around the age of five followed by steady progress through her teens. She said people’s attitudes to women’s football have come along in leaps and bounds during that time. “It was so weird, when all the girls actually started playing and the AFLW took off it was suddenly cool to play now,” she said. “That was a big change, all the girls were playing netball and basketball and stuff and now they’re playing footy as well.” Woods said she still enjoys watching the elite men’s teams go round, but the chance to see women living out her dream at the top level is a real inspiration as well. “It’s cool because earlier you just had to watch the boys play, which was cool as well, but watching the girls play you get more of an idea of what the game is like at that level.” Woods is now setting her sights on taking her own game to that level as early as this summer, hoping to catch the eye of recruiters at the draft combine. “My game has definitely improved the second half of the season, I moved around positions a bit, moved a bit more in the midfield, and that’s worked well for me,” she said. “I still like to play in the forward line though, swapping into the midfield.” Woods said her VFLW experience has also been a great opportunity to mix it with some of the game’s best. “A lot of the AFLW girls are also rotating through that comp, so it’s been really cool training with them and playing with them,” she said.

City West Falcons returned to the court in fine form in the Victorian Netball League championship division, with a big win against the Aerials. After nearly a month off due to the COVID-19 lockdown, the Falcons were keen to get back on court last Wednesday. They started a bit sloppy before stepping it up in the middle two quarters to take control of the game. The Falcons switched things up in the last quarter as they ran away with a 66-33 win. Falcons coach Marg Lind said she was happy with how the team returned to the court. She said the group had trained a bit during the break over Zoom and outdoors, with its country and city players splitting into different training groups. “The break did us good,” she said. “I thought all three of our teams looked pretty good out there. The championship side looked really good in the second and third quarters after a sloppy start.” Jane Cook shot 45 goals from 47 attempts. In the last quarter Lind moved her to goalkeeper. “She’s still potentially someone who could develop in that role, with a shortage of tall keepers at the higher level,” Lind said. “She did quite well. We’ll look at that more in training.” Lind also switched the mid-court around, with Montana Holmes going back in wing defence and Emma Walters getting some time at wing attack ahead of the national championships. It was a hat-trick of wins for the Falcons, with their division 1 and under-19 sides also claiming the points. The division 1 team had to survive a last quarter comeback, winning 63-57, while the under-19s were dominant in a 54-33 win. Lind said a lot of unknowns remain about the rest of the season and the side would need to continue to be adaptable. “They are proposing to go into pools,” Lind said. “We’ll get to the halfway mark and then every club is ranked on their three sides and will be placed in pools and then qualify for finals that way. “It is what it is, we’re still getting to play netball.” Tara Murray Jemima Woods has been invited to attend the AFLW Draft Combine.
