Brace for impact!
Geelong’s Big Freeze raised $55,000 for Fight MND, an increase of 30 per cent from the inaugural event last year.
The Drysdale Football Netball Club event, which coincided with home footy and netball games against Newcomb Power, attracted a crowd of about 4000 on Sunday, June 4.
The tally tally places the Hawks on top of the sporting clubs ’ladder’ nationally for funds raised at DIY Big Freezes fundraising platforms.
Hosted by Bay 93.9’s Mark and Millie, sliders braved the icy waters all in the cause for fighting MND.
“Every slider bought something special on the day, but the one thing that was in common, in the theme of the Fight MND Foundation, and the wishes of the great Neale Daniher, it was all in,“ organiser Graeme Reid said.

Call for stabbing vision
By Jena Carr
Police have increased patrols in South Geelong and put out a call for home security vision following a stabbing this week.
A 73-year-old woman received stab wounds to her back and hands during a “random“ attack on Mundy Street on Tuesday, June 6.
Police allege a 32-year-old South Geelong man stabbed the woman several times before fleeing the scene on foot, leaving her to seek help from nearby residents.
Geelong criminal investigation unit Detective Senior Sergeant Mark Guthrie said the attack was “extremely random” and encouraged people to remain aware of their surroundings.
“We have stepped up patrols in regard to the incident,” he said. “Yes, we have made a quick arrest in regards to this one, but there are still patrols in that area.
“If anyone does have cameras around (South Geelong), please have a look around 7pm and contact us if they can or contact
Crime Stoppers.”
Thewomanwaswalkinghomefromafamily member’s house along Mundy Street near the corner of Bellarine Street about 7pm on Tuesday.
The man was arrested and charged with an intention to cause serious injury and faced Geelong Magistrates Court on Wednesday afternoon.
Detective Senior Sergeant Guthrie said the man never spoke to the woman and was arrested on the night of the incident.
“This one is concerning in regard to the randomness of it,” he said.
“She’s been able to make her way to a residence close by where she saw a light on, and they’ve provided her with First Aid.
“All knife incidents and reported offences with knives or any weapons is concerning.“
Geelong University Hospital said the woman was in a stable condition on Wednesday afternoon.
Anyone who witnessed the incident is urged to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.

Greater Geelong City Council Extraordinary Vacancy
An extraordinary vacancy has occurred in Windermere Ward within Greater Geelong City Council due to the resignation of Councillor Kylie Grzybek on Monday 29 May 2023.
The vacancy will be filled through a countback of the formal ballot papers cast at the last general election in October 2020. Running to beat cancer
A Torquay man will tackle 22 kilometres to raise money for prostate cancer research and has already passed his goal.
Brendan Merriman’s campaign is part of the Prostate Cancer Foundation of Australia’s (PCFA) Perfect Match for Men’s Health Week, running from June 12 to 18.
Mr Merriman said he had raised close to $1230, more than double his original $500.
“I’ve done my 22km in very short sprints because I’ve got a broken foot,” he said.
“I’m just doing a walk when I can and I’ve been at it for a couple of weeks now, so I think I’ve done close to 34km now.”
Mr Merriman said he was inspired to raisemoneyforPCFAafterlosingfriends and family to prostate cancer.
“A number of my mates and associates inthelastcoupleofyearshaveeitherbeen diagnosed with or died from prostate cancer and one sadly suicided,” he said.
“Three of us went to get ourselves checked within days of each other. One of them has since died of prostate cancer, and the other one had his prostate removed.”
One Australian man is diagnosed with prostate cancer every 22 minutes, while 170 men are diagnosed yearly in Torquay and the wider Geelong region.
Mr Merriman said it was important to help raise awareness of the disease and remove the misconceptions surrounding how the cancer is identified, which is through a blood test.
“They don’t actually do a physical examination anymore until your bloods are too high,” he said.

Planting for biodiversity
Lake Connewarre will soon sprout new plants thanks to volunteers’ work celebrating World Environment Day.
Conservation Volunteers Australia (CVA) held a Let’s Plant day at the lake’s Douglas Street site on Wednesday, June 7, two days after World Environment Day.
Project officer Leah Edwards said local experts in land management had thoughtfully chosen the plants the volunteers would place at Lake Connewarre.
“These plantings aim to create and enhance habitats suitable for the diverse bird life associated with Lake Connewarre,” she said. “They were selected based on their compatibility with the natural habitat of the surrounding wetland ecosystem.
“AmongthespeciesintroducedwereAcacias, Banksias,andvarioustypesofWallabygrasses.
“By incorporating these specific plants, we seek to foster a harmonious environment that supports the natural ecosystem and promotes biodiversity.”
Ms Edwards said she loved events like the planting day because it was a “genuine and down-to-earth experience”.
“It’s all about the simple joy of being in nature, getting your hands dirty, and enjoying the company of our community,” she said.
“People find happiness in taking part in small acts to help our planet, like planting trees, without any grand expectations.
“It’s a wonderful opportunity to come together, enjoy the outdoors, and make a positive impact on our environment.”
Ramsar Convention on Wetlands secretary general Martha Rojas Urrego said looking after the local environment was important.
“The health and well-being of the world’s wetlands are central to planetary and human health,” she said.
“Ourabilitytosavetheworld’swetlandsrests on our capacity to foster greater consciousness and understanding of the multiple benefits that these momentous, life-supporting ecosystems provide from every vantage point.”
see it go, the exciting part is that we have this amazing new facility not far away.
“The Northern Aquatic and Community Hub is going to be incredible, and just like Waterworld, it will very quickly become a cherished place for our local community.”
Waterworld was famous for its large outdoor waterslides, which were removed in 2018 to make way for the new Barwon Health North healthcare centre.
Sincethattime,Waterworldhascontinuedto offer a range of swimming and gym facilities
for members and visitors.
These services will all be offered as part of the $65.6 million Northern Aquatic and Community Hub when it opens early in 2024. The City’s Swim, Sport and Leisure team will operate a pop-up gym facility for Waterworld members at the nearby Corio Leisuretime Sports Precinct on Anakie Road until the NorthernAquaticandCommunityHubopens. Support for local jobs
By Cr Trent Sullivan
Ensuring a constantly shifting economy meets the needs of the local community is among the biggest challenges of population growth.
Geelong’s modern economy has been one of the country’s success stories, with both the number of jobs (125,000) and annual output ($39 billion) soaring in recent years.
But with more people moving to the region over the coming years, we need to ensure the right jobs, the necessary infrastructure and services, and a skilled workforce are in place.
Council is continually working with a range of partners to leverage and promote our competitive strengths, and to prepare residents to find local jobs in a changing economy.
It is about identifying the current opportunities, andlookingaheadtohelprealise the potential of emerging and diversifying industries.
And it is about bringing through the next generation of workers, and linking them to existing employers.
As part of this work, the City of Greater Geelong recently partnered with The Gordon to host an Apprenticeship and Traineeship Support Forum.
Theforumaimedtomaximiseapprenticeship and traineeship participation, increasing retention rates, and assist in meeting labour shortages in the region.
Young jobseekers and their families were able to meet apprenticeship providers, group training organisations and employers to learn about the state of the jobs market.
Small to medium-sized businesses learnt about the benefits, responsibilities, and process of taking on an apprentice or trainee.
They also received an understanding of the ongoing support and incentives available.
The forum is part of the wide range of work the city does to support small business, innovation, and entrepreneurship.
For 12 years, the city has run the Geelong Small Business Festival.
In an exciting development for this region’s largest dedicated business festival, the Geelong Chamber of Commerce is taking the lead to deliver the event this year in August.
The partnership between the city and the chamber has been formed based on the shared goal of cultivating economic prosperity and a thriving business community in Geelong.
The event remains open to operators and entrepreneurs from all industries, and for businesses of all sizes.
Attracting thousands of participants every year, the festival aims to provide insights,
resources, and practical strategies for navigating the evolving business landscape.
Outside of this, the City’s Business and Industry Experience team is working to ensure businesses can take advantage of the wonderful potential of the upcoming 2026 Commonwealth Games.
The delivering a local supplier engagement program, to make sure local suppliers are up to date with the goods and services opportunities on offer for the Games.
There are now more than 1200 opportunities for local companies to secure contracts, with a number of major construction projects for competition venues already out.
Businesses should register at tenders.vic.gov. au to stay updated as new opportunities reach the market.

Cat Curfew Review
When we reviewed our Domestic Animal Management Plan in 2021, the community had a lot to say about unwanted cat behaviours and cat curfews.
One of the strong themes to emerge was the preference for cats to be contained to their owner’s property 24 hours a day, due to the various impacts they may pose on neighbours, wildlife and the environment.

Councillors face library grilling
By Justin Flynn
Efforts to save Highton, Geelong West and Barwon Heads libraries ramped up this week after concerned residents grilled council members at a special meeting on Saturday, June 3.
The packed out meeting at Geelong West Town Hall was attended by mayor Trent Sullivan and councillors Melissa Cadwell, Eddy Kontelj, Jim Mason, Ron Nelson and deputy mayor Anthony Aitken. It came after the mayor restricted question time to the allotted 45 minutes and responded with a blanket statement at the May 23 council
meeting, leaving many of the specifics of the questions unanswered in relation to the libraries.
Some angry residents were ejected from the chamber by security after voicing their frustration at not being able to pose their questions directly to councillors.
After the council’s draft budget left Geelong Regional Libraries Corporation (GRLC) with a $762,000 funding shortfall, GRLC announced it would need to close the three libraries.
“I certainly appreciate the passion for our region’s libraries,” Cr Sullivan said.
“OurdiscussionswiththeGRLCareongoing and we are getting much closer to agreement
about how they can operate all of our region’s libraries with the level of funding available, without the need for service reductions.
“We reiterate that in a very challenging economic environment where we’ve made tough decisions across our operations as part ofourproposedbudget, wehavefoundanextra $240,000 for libraries in 2023-24. Our council invests more in libraries per resident than almost any other council in Victoria.
“Our costs are rising at double the rate cap, meaning we’ve had to find savings and efficiencies across our entire budget. We are asking our service providers to do the same.
“The GRLC also indicated they expect to
receive no increase in state funding to cover the new libraries or CPI increases. All tiers of government are under budget pressure.”
Save Highton Library group’s Anne McMahon praised the councillors who attended the meeting, but said most were disappointed by the responses some of them gave.
“We left with the bulk of us feeling like they are not going to give way,” she said.
“We don’t want to have to keep coming back year after year. We felt we didn’t learn anything new and didn’t think a whole lot of new ground was covered.
“We just have to keep the pressure up.”
Geelong residents rally to ban new coal and gas
Geelong environmental activists raised awareness for climate change at a No New Coal or Gas rally a day before World Environment Day.
Organiser Sarah Hathway said the rally received a good turnout of close to 60 on Sunday, June 4.
“We went for a march along Eastern Beach from the Carousel up to the Ferris Wheel and came back,” she said.
“We had a good contingent of anti-war and peace activists that captured that anti-nuclear and anti-war sentiment and why that’s relevant for World Environment Day.
Ms Hathway said she thought it was important to identify the local and national environmental issues and inspire governments to make changes.
“It seems at all levels of government, we’re still not doing enough to address climate
change,” she said. “We still don’t have a decision on whether Viva’s gas import terminal will go ahead in Corio Bay.
“If Viva isn’t successful, then another
company called Vopak is proposing a gas import terminal just around the corner of Werribee.
“Our state government have announced
some pretty good emission reduction targets, butwedon’tfeellikethosetargetsareachievable if projects like Viva or Vopak go ahead.”
A Viva Energy spokesperson said it was taking significant steps to reduce its carbon footprint.
“Theroleoftheproposedgasterminalisn’tto increase the amount of gas people use,” it said.
“It is to ensure that people who use gas today can continue to access a reliable supply when needed.
“Viva Energy’s proposed gas terminal is consistent with Victorian legislation and policy in relation to climate change.”
The rally also heard from many speakers, including Western Victoria Greens MP Sarah Mansfield and former Animal Justice MP Andy Meddick.

THE PLATYPUS GUARDIAN
ABC TV, Tuesday, 8.30pm
How much do you know about Australia’s most mysterious and strange native animal, the platypus? You’ll be captivated by this tale of two creatures – one man, one mammal – facing their mortality. When Hobartian Peter Walsh (pictured) received a life-changing medical diagnosis, he found comfort by the Hobart Rivulet, where he “befriended” a platypus he named Zoom.
Good versus evil, man versus animal… this morbid, scenic miniseries starring a menacing Colin Farrell and Jack O’Connell (pictured) wraps up tonight with a masterful flourish, leaving viewers with a chance to defrost – and a lot to reflect upon. Following a mid-19th-century whaling expedition in the Arctic, this unique series’ utterly compelling performances, along with its magnificent backdrop, make for some harrowing scenes. Tonight, Sumner (O’Connell) is nursed back to health by a missionary priest. Returning to Hull, Sumner sets out to find Baxter (Tom Courtenay) and start the next phase of his life.

Lexus SUV shines ever brightly
By Derek Ogden, Marque Motoring
More than 20 years ago Toyota lit up the automotive world with the introduction of the Prius petrol / electric hybrid car. The sedan’s asymmetric hybrid fuel saving system became the mainstay of the automobile maker’s electric vehicles, even becoming the power plant of choice for taxis around the world.
Needless to say, this did not go un-noticed withToyota’sluxeautopartnerLexusplugging in to the development for its range of saloons and SUVs. Latest model to take the petrol / electric path is the fifth (fourth in Australia) generation RX SUV.
Thehybrid makesupeightofthe14variants on offer Down Under and comes in front- or all-wheel drive. Prices start at $87,500, plus on-road costs, for the RX350h Luxury FWD and top out at $126,000 for the RX500h F Sport Performance AWD.
The Luxury grade as standard has bi-LED headlamps, daytime running lamps, front and rear fog lamps, heated and driver’s side auto-dimming exterior mirrors, rear privacy glass, roof rails and 19-inch alloy wheels with a five-spoke design combining a bright machined finish and dark grey metallic surface treatment. Despite being well equipped for the price, there is a choice of two enhancement packs to add further to the ownership experience.
For example, the test vehicle, an RX 350h Luxury AWD, was fitted with Enhancement Package 1, which consists of Panoramic roof with slide, leather-accented upholstery, driver’s seat memory, easy access entry (seat and steering wheel), heated and ventilated front seats, high-grade instrument cluster and head-up displays, touch sensor-type steering

The Lexus five-years unlimited kilometre warranty applies to all RX models. Capped price servicing has been extended from three to five years and is set at $695 for each scheduled service, with intervals set at 12 months or 15,000 km. At the rear, the new LED tail-light signature of the Lexus SUV line-up is defined by a full-width LED light along the tailgate, flanked by L-shaped tail lights. L-E-X-U-S lettering, no longer the ‘L’ badge, runs across the tailgate in keeping with the current automobile fashion, while muscular wheel arches taper towards the roof to give the new RX a sporty stance.
Interior
As well as the sophisticated cabin styling we have come to expect from Lexus, and the latest in equipment, the new RX has taken on extra width, and wheelbase has been increased, freeing up more space for occupants.
All Luxury grades include heated, eight-way adjustable front seats with two-way power lumbar adjustment, synthetic leather trim, three-zone climate control with air purification, auto-dimming rear view mirror, carpetfloormats, fourcupholders, cargocover and power tailgate. Audio aficionados need to shell out for the higher Sports grades to take advantage of 21-speaker Mark Levinson premium surround sound.
The info system offers in-built satellite navigation, DAB+ digital radio and Lexus Connected Services, providing further convenience and peace of mind. Five USB-C ports are scattered throughout the cabin, along with two 12V sockets and one USB-A port to support multimedia connection and smartphone charging.
Engine and transmission
The heart of the hybrid powertrain is the RX 350h featuring Lexus’ signature series-parallel
hybrid system teaming a 2.5-litre aspirated petrol engine to either one or two motor generators, depending on front or all-wheel drive configuration.
Tuned to produce 140 kW at 6000 rpm and 239 Nm between 4300 and 4500 rpm, with the hybrid unit, maximum combined power output is 184 kW. The petrol engine drives the front wheels via an e-CVT, with a six-step sequential mode.
Safety
Lexus Safety Sense+ active safety features are included across the RX range, including the pre-collision system with intersection collision avoidance support, emergency steering assist and low-speed acceleration suppression, lane departure alert, dynamic radar cruise control, lane tracing assist, parking support brake, blind spot monitor, plus rear cross-traffic alert. New is a driver monitoring camera which keeps track of the driver’s concentration, warning of any lapse. All new-generation RX models feature safe exit assist, incorporating new electrically activated door handles which detect cyclists or vehicles passing close to the vehicle and keep the door shut.
Driving
A lightweight permanent magnet synchronous motor is housed within the transaxle, capable of producing an instant 134kW / 270Nm, improving acceleration from rest.
A second motor generator is placed on the rear axle, providing eFour all-wheel drive in low-traction conditions. This is tuned to produce 40 kW and 121 Nm.
The RX 350h employs a newly developed nickel-metal hydride battery, placed under the rear seat, which with Improvements to motor technology, have almost doubled top speed in EV mode from 68 km/h to 125 km/h.
With the downsizing of the petrol engine from a 3.5-litre V6 to a 2.5-litre four-cylinder unit, fuel economy has also improved, with the RX 350h AWD claiming as little as 5.4 litres per 100 kilometres and CO2 emissions of 123 g/km. The test car, on recommended 95RON petrol, averaged 7.4 litres per 100 kilometres in varying driving conditions over a week.
Driving aids have been built into the body design with the front edge of the bonnet raised to make it easier for drivers to note the vehicle extremities, while the height of the bonnet bulge has been optimised to help the driver pick the right line on cornering.

Giselle still kicking and saving goals
Geelong footballer Giselle Harris has played andlovedtheworldgameforoverfourdecades.
Starting out as a 11-year-old in Port Elizabeth, South Africa, the now 55-year-old grandmother of three has shown no signs of letting up, still pulling on the boots for Barwon Soccer Club in the Geelong Region Women’s Division One competition.
Furthermore she is also pulling on the goalkeeping gloves in 2023, admitting she has no problems being in between the sticks.
“Football is my outlet, I’ve played since I was a child,” she said.
“I love competing and just love the feel of the game. I don’t mind playing in goals now, as I’ve played in that position in mixed indoor leagues, where we’ve won quite a few titles.”
Football is a family affair for Giselle, with her husband Dale and her son Tristan also at Barwon. Dale coaches the senior men’s team, winning a State League title last year, with 18-year-old Tristan joining the team this year after playing at the NPL level with local powerhouse North Geelong Warriors.
Giselle and Dale first met through football back in 2002, and fittingly their lives revolve around the world game.
“I met Dale at soccer 21 years ago and we got married on a soccer field in 2008,” she said.
“My eldest son is named Diego (after Diego Maradonna). Football continues to be an intricate part of our lives everyday.”
Through Diego, 36, and her daughters Simonne, 34, and Stephani, 29, Giselle has been blessed with three grandchildren aged between 11 and 22 months, all of whom will undoubtedly be brought up with a ball at their feet.
Despite a busy life – she works as a sonographerandradiographerduringtheweek
– Giselle still looks forward to playing every weekend, and admits the 2023 World Cup is exciting especially since South Africa and the Matildas will be taking part.
“I love the progression of women’s football most of all and am just proud of how far women’s football has come,” she said.
“From us digging trenches in Port Elizabeth to physically plant our soccer posts, to the grand stadiums women play in today, it’s been brilliant to see how far the women’s game has come.
“It’s exciting to watch the Matildas and South Africa in Australia and New Zealand in a World Cup.”
HerBarwonteamissittinginfourthposition so far in 2023, with Giselle keeping three clean sheets in six games.
“Yeah it’s been pretty good,” she said.
“Barwon is a great club to be a part of, and hopefully I have a few years left in me.”
Itpromisestobeanexcitingyearforwomen’s football, and with the World Cup less than 50 days away, there will be plenty of heroes out there inspiring girls and women to play.
But it’s everyday heroes like Grandma G who are the heart and soul of the game in Australia.

Surfcoast’s good form continued in Section 5 when Jan Juc upset Drysdale in the first-semi by four games. The sets alternated through the day, but Gayle Roche helped her team over the line winning her three sets.
In the second-semi, counterparts Surfcoast Torquay set up an all Surf Coast grand final with a win over Ocean Grove. The teams split the first two sets, but Torquay pushed ahead winning two tie-breaks, then with Loretta Fisher winning her third set with Clare Green, the result was beyond doubt, and the win ultimately sealed, four sets to two.
Section 8 was the final set of semi-finals, where both matches were decisive. Fishos waste no time getting out
ON THE BITE Peri Stavropoulos
With a good break in the weather over the weekend anglers wasted no time in getting out for a fish with some fantastic reports coming through.
Inside Corio Bay continues to fish well for land based and kayak fishos getting stuck into the usual resident species of fish in the area (pinkies, flathead, trevally, salmon and snotty trevalla).
Wagim Walk has been a popular location with anglers casting soft plastics finding plenty of action on offer.
Offshore saw some brilliant fishing this past week with anglers getting stuck into great numbers of gummy sharks, school sharks and snapper. Anglers fishing 35 metres out the front of Torquay were having great success with fresh salmon yet again proving to be the best bait, squid has also proved lethal.
Paternoster rigs are a perfect rig to run as it allows your bait to sit up off the bottom and snags.
With a short break in the weather, lots of anglers flocked down the west coast in search of tuna with lots of reports of school fish and barrels on the chew, Portland and Apollo Bay were the two standout locations.
Trolling skirted lures and divers have been working best, when there are big work ups dropping pillies or casting lures into them is a very good tactic to get a bite.
The Barwon Estuary has been loaded with silver trevally, eps, salmon and mullet. Anglers casting soft plastics, fly and bait have all been getting amongst the action with plenty of fish spread right through the system. Up higher towards the thunderbolt has had some reports of anglers picking up some mulloway which is epic to see. Anglers pulling up on the bank and fishing the tides with fresh squid and plenty of patience have been getting some impressive results of fish to 85cm.
Wurdiboluc Reservoir has had some fantastic fishing this past week also with large numbers of redfin and lots of brown trout on the move. The east and west rock wall have both been producing fish with redfin to 43cm and trout to 4lb being landed. Shallow jerk baits have been working a treat for both species.
4, and with Beni Turkson winning her two remaining sets, stayed in front, booking a place against Aireys Inlet next week.
Clifton Springs had better success in Section 6, coming from behind to topple Drysdale by seven games. Drysdale was ahead three sets to one and by two games leading into the final two sets, but Carol Spivey and Jan Whitmore blasted a 6-0 win while on the other court
Vicky and Sarah Winship followed suit winning 6-3, keeping the Springs’ chances of a
premiership alive.
The closest match of the day was in Section 2 when Point Lonsdale hosted Winchelsea. The teams split the first two sets with Winchelsea ahead by two games, then split the middle sets with teams tied on games with two sets remaining.
Anne Hainsworth and Val Wilson won the fifth set for Lonny 6-1 and despite Andrea Spiller winning her third set for Winch 6-4, the game difference had Lonny ahead by three.
The Hopkins River has also had some good reports come through of black bream and eps on the move, with a comp held on the weekend we had plenty of reports come through.
Fishing with baits like scrub worms and freshwater yabbies worked really well and so to did casting hard body lures and soft plastics.
