Checkmate By Hugh Pearson Pakenham Secondary College’s chess team placed third in the 2022 Victorian Schools Secondary Girls Chess Finals on Wednesday 5 October. Pakenham Secondary College principal Aaron Smith commended the students and gave praise to the school’s “outstanding chess program”. “This excellent result shows that our chess program is growing from strength to strength,” Mr Smith said. “We congratulate our Year 8 team for their wonderful achievement in the recent Chess State Finals.” Pakenham Secondary was awarded third place, missing out on second in a tie break. The Year 8 students have been mentored by teachers Sergio De Lima and Christian Ampongan, who have been running the chess program over the last 12 years. Pakenham residents are bracing themselves for potential flash flooding, with up to 50mm expected today, Thursday 13 October. The Bureau of Meteorology (BOM) put Southern Victoria on initial flood watch ahead of a cold front and low-pressure system with widespread heavy rainfall expected on Thursday. In Pakenham, there is a very high (near 100 per cent) chance of rain. Heavy falls are possible, most likely later in the day or at night.
