Train push picks up steam
Victorian commuters could experience a major boost in metropolitan train and tram services under a plan released by the Greens in the lead up to the November state election.Trains would run every ten minutes or even less across the majority of the network from 7am to 7pm, seven days a week, and most would run every 10 minutes in the early morn ing and Tramsevening.would run at peak-hour frequency all day from 7am to 7pm, and every ten min utes during off-peak times on every line except the Cranbourne, Williamstown and Upfield lines. The plan has been independently costed by the Parliamentary Budget Office and would require $821.5 million over the forward esti mates.Currently, commuters can wait up to 20 minutes for a train or tram across Melbourne. Victorian Greens transport spokesperson Sam Hibbins said that was not acceptable.
The massive boost to train and tram services is in addition to the Greens’ recently announced plan for solar-powered, high frequency bus networks across Melbourne and regional cities. More trains will be arriving and departing Pakenham under a proposal by the Greens. 196128
The massive public transport boost is part of the Victorian Greens’ push to support people to make the switch to climate-friendly transport.Withtransport being Victoria’s biggest growing source of carbon emissions, increasing the frequency of trains and trams will help reduce emissions from petrol-guzzling cars and make it easier to get around, the Greens said. The Greens would also fast-track the planning of new tunnels and tracks needed to increase peak-hour services across greater Melbourne and regional Victoria.
Designs finalised for new Narre Warren Train Station
“A massive increase in public transport services will make it easier for people to switch to cheaper and climate-friendly transport,” he said.“More trains and trams will cut climatedamaging transport emissions and make it easier and cheaper to get around our city.”
The State Government is one step closer to removing level crossings along the Pakenham Line, with final designs released for Webb Street and a brand-new Narre Warren Station.The875m elevated rail bridge will remove the level crossing and increase safety, ease congestion and allow more trains – changing the way people move around in the southeast for years to come, the government said.Around 13,200 vehicles use the Webb Street level crossing each day, with the boom gates down for up to 40 minutes during the morning peak when up to 25 trains pass through.Withthe Metro Tunnel opening in 2025 meaning more trains, more often, the boom gates would be down for significant periods throughout the day if not removed, the government said. Since 2012, there have been at least 19 near misses recorded at the level crossing. Community feedback has helped shape the project, which will deliver better acces sibility and facilities for the new Narre War ren Station and forecourt, the government said.Upgrades include elevated platforms with access via lifts and stairs, seating and improved lighting, and a secure Parkiteer bicycle cage, bicycle hoops and landscaping.
The new station design highlights the history of the area and features a wave-shaped exterior surrounding the central staircases, while new bus bays on Webb Street will be longer and wider to ensure traffic isn’t blocked.Shared pedestrian and cycle paths will connect the station to Narre Warren village, and a signalised pedestrian crossing will be installed onWebb Street to create better connections in the area. Transport Infrastructure Minister Jacinta Allan said the Pakenham line would be levelcrossing free by 2025.

By Cam Lucadou-Wells An 865-metre spur-line railway track has been completed in the South East, as part of the Port Rail Shuttle Network (PRSN). The $28 million track via the Cranbourne line will link a massive intermodal freight terminal in Bayliss Road, Dandenong South to the Port of Melbourne. The work was done as part of the Level Crossing Removal Project and $1 billion upgrade and duplication of the Cranbourne line. In total, it is expected to slash 175,000 truck trips on the Monash Freeway and suburban roads each year, and to cut freight transport costs by up to 10 per cent. Ports and Freight Minister Melissa Horne said the project was designed to help cope with the growing “Victorian freight task”. “Rail must and will shoulder more of the heavy lifting to keep our economy thriving.
Salta founding director Sam Tarascio has pushed the vision for 18 years as an answer to road freight and congestion. He recently said it would be a “major godsend” for a precinct filling with importers, exporters and major distribution centres such as Amazon, Bunnings and Woolworths. As part of the PRSN, other freight hubs in Altona and Somerton will also connect to a new rail terminal at Port of Melbourne. By 2050, the Port Rail Shuttle Network is predicted to move 30 per cent of Melbourne containers by rail to terminals in Dandenong South, Altona and Somerton.
“Over his time at Wyndham Torquay, Ramada Phillip Island and ClubWyndham Dinner Plain, our food and beverage ratings and profitability have improved and guests have consistently left positive reviews mentioning Tom by name,” Mr Cullum said. “At just 23, Tom is an impressive talent who we are proud to have as part of our team and we are thrilled to see him recognised by his“Tompeers.is a great example of how hospitality as a career path can provide opportunities for people with skill, ambition and the right attitude.”Asfood and beverage manager, Tom has mentored an expanding team at onsite restaurant and bar FlameTrees and has also driven growth in onsite conferencing and events like trivia nights and musical bingo. Cardinia Shire’s Emerging from Fire exhibition is a visual reflection of the 2019 Bunyip Complex Fires which features photographs taken by community members and first responders of the fire’s response, relief and recovery efforts. Council developed and curated the exhibition in partnership with the Community Recovery Committee following feedback that residents wanted the opportunity to capture and reflect on their experiences as a part of their recovery. Spectacular students take part in annual perfomance
“It’s been great because the students really take ownership over it. We just facilitate it but the kids steer the direction,” he said. “It’s great to give them the opportunity to even just being able to wear cultural dress, they just love it and take that pride in being able to demonstrate that.”

The Narre Warren South teen is one of 3000 students from 200 Victorian schools participating in the event, which is back live for the first time in three years. It will be performed to an audience of thousands at John Cain Arena on Saturday 10 September, and later watched by thousands more when it is broadcasted on television. Featuring daredevil skaters, skipping teams, acrobats, hip-hop dancers, giant puppetry, and circus acts, talented vocalists and musicians will perform songs from artists such asThe Beatles, Dua Lipa, StanWalker and Kate Bush in this year’s event with the celebratory theme, ‘Time to Shine’.

The State Schools Spectacular is set to light up John Cain Arena on 10 September.
For Ashley, who is in her final year at Narre Warren South P-12 College, the spectacular is familiar“Everyterritory.yearhas offered me something really special. My first year was amazing because I was only 8 years old and in the VSSS Choir,” Ashley recalled. “When I was offered a principal role for the first time, I was so proud of myself, but being a principal vocalist and principal dancer in the one show is just amazing. “I love the professionalism of the show and being able to bring both my genres to the show is an honour.”
ready for showtime
By Eleanor Wilson Ashley Lucey-Jannert may only be 18 years old, but she is about to star in her 10thVictoria’s State Schools Spectacular.
The show, which has been a tradition in government schools since its inception in 1995, is not short of South East talent, either. Performers of all ages and abilities will grace the stage, with schools such as Hampton Park Secondary College, Cranbourne West Secondary College, Lyndhurst Secondary College, Nossal High School, Berwick Lodge primary school, Kambrya College, NarreWarren South P-12 College and Hallam Secondary College.
By Jonty Ralphsmith and Eleanor Wilson Ten students from Hallam Secondary College are vying to be part of the Haka performance at theVictorian State Schools Spectacular later thisHallamyear. was one of three schools that took part in the performance at the last event, in 2019, and there are now students from five schools – including nearby Narre Warren South P-12 College and Cranbourne East Sec ondaryHakaCollege.involves traditional Maori performances that symbolise strength and unity.“For a lot of them, it is the first time they have ever done anything like that and they don’t realise how empowering it can actually be,” teacher Karlene Morgan said. “We do talk a lot about our ancestors of the Haka as well, and how when we’re out there, we do represent them, so it gives them con nection to their family and in general because it is for any newcomer to Victoria.”
The choir will hit the stage at the State Schools Spectacular to perform a customised version of Bigger by Maori artist Stan Walker.“We’ve changed the altered the version to include a verse in Te Reo Maori and a Samoan verse. To sing in native language and wear designed traditional culturally significant dress gives the students a large platform to demonstrate their culture.”

Local teenagers
Unlike the performance in 2019, females will be involved this year, with eight of the ten from Hallam being females. “It is very empowering as well for our young female students to be involved in that. “A lot of them saw the Haka two years ago that our boys did and wanted to be involved in it the following year and some are very angry now that the girls can do it because they missedAlongsideout!” the Haka performers, the event will feature a performance by the Pasefika Choir, a group made up of 40 Pacific Islander students from schools including Cranbourne West Secondary College, Narre Warren South P-12 College, Monterey Secondary College, Lyndhurst Secondary College and Hampton Park Secondary College. Head of instrumental music at Cranbourne West Secondary College, Shane Chidgey said the Pasefika Choir had been great for students and school staff.
Ashley will star as a principal vocalist and principal dancer in the show, something she hopes to pursue after she graduates high school.“Ideally I’d like to be a musical theatre performer on cruise ships,” she said. Fellow participant is Nossal High School’s Alex Wilson, who is embarking on his first State Schools Spectacular, as a trombone player in the orchestra.
He said the Pasefika Choir has also assisted in student engagement at the schools. “Some of the kids might disengage in an academic sense, but having an opportunity to celebrate their culture and collaborate that culture into a school environment - they start to shine,” Shane said. “It also allows teachers to view them in a different light and not only allow students to celebrate culture but it educate staff about the culture of these students.”
“I’d heard about [the event] before and I’d seen people from my old school participate, but I didn’t know it was something anyone could participate in,” he said. “It’s been a really fun experience and we’ve received a lot of one-on-one practice from the trombone tutor so I’ve been able to develop my abilities as well as general skills and playing in a large 80-piece orchestra,” he said.“It’s also good to have a break from schoolwork and have a chance to enrich other other areas of life. “I’ve seen a lot of the performers researching and it’s just amazing to see so many wide ranging skills being utilised from puppeteering to acrobatics. I’m sure it will elevate the final performances to amazing levels.”

Describing the event as “one of the greatest experiences of my life”, Alex said the production had been a reminder for him to try new“I’vethings.learnt so many skills and it’s enriched my life in so many ways so I’d just like to just encourage people to give it a shot,” he said. “Even if it’s not the spectacular, try new things, new instruments.”

By Marcus Uhe Sophie Bowden is taking her passion for arts and crafts to the next level by establishing her own small business. In the lead-up to Father’s Day, the 10-year-old’s packs come complete with a notepad, texta, two stickers and a plain coaster.Theidea is for fellow kids to make their own creative gifts for their dads.
“We thought that if we make them on special occasions, it gives the gift a hook,” Ms Bowden said. “We’ll do Halloween packs for Halloween, with hooks for doors, glue and glitter to create a Halloween sign.”
Stepping up for a cause
GoFundMe pages have been established for members of the community to contribute to theirAmongendeavours.thechosen organisations were Family Violence and Housing Support Ser vice WAYSS, Solider On, the Cranbourne Food Truck and Ronald McDonald House. “Kids in term two learn about community issues,” VCAL teacher Shaun Thomas said. “This year we focused on cost of living and everything that’s going on in the world, and how it affects homelessness, domestic vio lence, drug use, etc. “Each group had to write a letter to the council to get facilities donated for the day. “They had to write a letter to the principal seeking support for the barbecue that’s going to be run for kids to eat. They had to liaise with the organisation that they were working with to get approval to fundraise for them, as well as run a social media campaign.”
A number of local businesses and organisations have thrown their support behind the concept, including the City of Casey, who donated the use of the Hunt Club and facilities, and local businesses such as Brians Gourmet Meats in Lyndhurst who have contributed supplies for the barbecue.
On Thursday 6 October the participating students will descend on the nearby Hunt Club Oval for four hours of exercise, music and good vibes at the culmination of their community project.Thestudents have been arranged into small groups across the cohort and were told to se lect a local charitable organisation based on their studies earlier in the year.
Investigators from the Dandenong High Risk Driving Unit have arrested an alleged recidi vist hoon as part of Operation Achilles, laying more than 260 charges for dangerous driving and a raft of theft from motor vehicle offences across Melbourne’s South East. Police allege the 22-year-old Rowville male was involved in a series of intentional highrisk driving events across Dandenong South andThisKeysborough.includestwo separate‘hoon gender reveals’ where the accused allegedly performed burnouts near crowds of people to emit clouds of pink or blue smoke, which revealed the gen der of his soon to be born children. These events allegedly took place on 10 July this year in Keysborough and on 5 July 2020 in Dandenong South. Sergeant Paul Holtzinger from the Dandenong High Risk Driving Unit said there were more appropriate and safer ways to announce the sex of a child. “If you’re celebrating an impending birth and want to reveal the gender of your child, pop a balloon or cut a cake,” Sgt Holtzinger said.“Don’t tear up our roads and recklessly put your family and friends in danger of serious injury or death.

A further three arrests were made in connection to the catalytic converter thefts on Thursday, including: · A 27-year-old Cranbourne North man who is expected to be charged with 64 offences, including theft from motor vehicle, possess proceeds of crime and commit indictable offence while on bail.
· A 25-year-old Seaford man who is expected to be charged with 63 offences including theft from motor vehicle, theft of motor vehicle, possess proceeds of crime and commit in dictable offence while on bail. In addition to the catalytic converter thefts, police will also allege the 22-year-old Rowville man and 25-year-old Seaford man stole a 2002 Holden Commodore sedan valued at $8500 from a Doveton address in May 2022. Sgt Holtzinger said the thefts present a serious danger to the theft victims and their vehicles.“Catalytic converters are an essential part of a vehicle’s exhaust system and when stolen, they cause significant inconvenience for car owners and huge repair bills.
The Ronald McDonald House carried a particular significance to the cohort following the loss of a classmate in 2021 who had spent time at the facility during his battle with Leukaemia. One person from the group must be running at all times for the duration of the walk and the campaign must be supported with information fliers on their chosen charity and social media posts.
“Most of what’s in the pack were her suggestions,” Sophie’s mother, Maria Bowden said.“Originally we were going to buy little cards for people to write in but they’re not as easy to get hold of. “These coasters are a perfect idea. A cup of tea, a beer - you can put anything on a coaster.”Sophie has long held a passion for drawing, with Maria recalling her spending hours watching online tutorials and mimicking what the experts produce. By turning her passion into an entrepreneurial venture, she’s learning the ins-andouts of business, including profit and loss, costs, shipping and promotion.
Police also seized another two vehicles as part of these warrants, taking the number of vehicles seized on Thursday to 14. In addition to this, police seized a trailer and three engines they will allege have either been stolen or are proceeds of crime. Since July last year, Operation Achilles has resulted in more than 240 offenders being charged for hoon driving, over 1400 charges being laid, and more than 155 vehicles being impounded across metropolitan Melbourne.
By Marcus Uhe Cranbourne East Secondary College students are raising money for a range of charities as part of theirVCAL students’ walkathon project.
The Rowville man was also charged in relation to three additional hooning incidents in Dandenong South between 28 April and 4 July thisTheyear.22-year-old male was arrested on Thursday 18 August and is expected to be charged with 48 offences in connection to this offending, including reckless conduct endangering life, reckless conduct endangering serious injury, driving in a manner dangerous and improper use of a motor vehicle, police said. During the course of their investigation into the hoon driving events, investigators from the Dandenong High Risk Driving Unit will allege they became aware the 22-year-old male from Rowville and three co-offenders were stealing catalytic converters from vehicles across Dandenong, Cranbourne, Mordialloc and Cheltenham between May and August this year. This resulted in damage to more than 70 vehicles, totalling up to $300,000 worth of repairs. Police will allege the group then on-sold the materials for their own personal financial gain.As a result, police said the 22-year-old Rowville man was also expected to be charged with another 213 offences in connection to these thefts. This is expected to include theft from motor vehicle, theft of motor vehicle, criminal damage, handle stolen goods, going equipped to steal, possess proceeds of crime, breach of bail conditions and commit indictable offence while on Policebail.seized 12 vehicles from Rowville and Bayswater connected to the alleged offender, including several Holden Commodores. Police will allege these vehicles were either connected to hoon driving events or proceeds of crime generated by the theft of catalytic converters.
Young girl, big business
News of the venture is attracting global attention – a friend of Maria’s from the UK purchased two packs last week to be posted to her grandchildren who live in Sydney.
While students will not be graded on their financial contribution or distance covered in the walk, prizes are on offer for milestones of distance and money raised. Mr Thomas said the competitive spirit is alive and well amongst the students.
At $5 per pack and factoring costs, she’s got some savings to do, but she’s committed for the long haul. To stay across her endeavours or to purchase a pack, find the Blind Bight Community Noticeboard on Facebook and search for Sophie’s DIY Designs.
Facing 260-plus charges
“If they walk one kilometre but manage to raise $50, and four other people do the same, that’s $250 and $250 that the charities didn’t have beforehand. It’s just about, at VCAL we really try and create community–minded kids to think a little bit more about others and not themselves.”
“Police will not stand for this and anyone caught stealing them can expect to be hit with serious criminal charges.”
“My kids love a challenge and a bit of banter but there’s also plenty of healthy encouragement to push each other to perform better and raise as much as they can.
“There’s no set distance component because it’s the first time we’re doing it, so we’ll see how it goes. It’s more about the kids getting an idea of a sense of accomplishment for doing something for someone other than themselves or a charitable cause.
· A 24-year-old CranbourneWest man charged with 69 offences relating to theft from motor vehicle and possess proceeds of crime. He has been bailed to appear before the Dandenong Magistrates’ Court on 20 December.
“It’s not only bizarre and illegal behaviour but has the real ability to turn a moment of celebration into tragedy.”

The Rotary Club of Pakenham has run debu tante balls for more than 30 years, catering for generations of families in the district. This year’s group impressed with their enthusiasm and dancing ability - from the very first awkward training session to last Saturday night where they displayed their talent. And they all looked stunning in their formal attire.Country towns traditionally had a ball season, with the debutante ball being one of the first to present the “coming out” of the young adults of the district. Balls were important social events for a district with a number of groups undertaking the event.Adebutante ball is one of the first occasions where the young people have the opportunity to get out of their day-to-day clothes and dress up in formal clothes they haven’t had the op portunity to wear. The event builds confidence for the future in what they wear and how they present them selves. For the 28 young adults who participated in the Rotary Debutante Ball held at the Pak enham Racecourse on Saturday 20 August, it was a night they will cherish and remember forever.Thedebutantes and partners were presented to the Rotary Club of Pakenham president Terry Williams, his wife Alwyn and to relatives and friends present on the night. As each young person entered the room, the MC for the evening, Rotarian Steve Fisher, gave short personal highlights and aspirations of each one to the very receptive crowd. The first dance set included the Charmaine, Tango Terrific and the Jive. Later in the evening, their talents shone with March On, The Evening Three Step, the Gypsy Tap and the Samba. An encore of the Cha Cha Slide was a highlight – especially when the guests for the evening joined them on the floor. During the evening, dance teachers Shane and Heather were acknowledged for their skill and persistence in preparing this year’s deb set - the first in three years. Pauline Morris was especially thanked for her ongoing commitment and assistance over the 10-week training session and on the night. The dining room at the Pakenham Racecourse was the venue for the evening, with pink balloons and an extra large, temporary dance floor.

In working with business leaders, we some times use personality profiling to enable a better understanding of their own natural be havioural preferences, i.e. the things they do naturally well and the sort of things they might struggle with. This approach typically associ ates a person with a profile type that has certain discernible characteristics such as introvert vs extrovert or being well organised and detailoriented as opposed to being a big picture, cre ative person who thinks outside the square. Depending upon the nature of the leadership role, the specific characteristics that a person naturally possesses may make them more, or less, naturally suited to that role. However, once leaders are aware of their natural behavioural preferences, it is quite possible to work on those that are hindering the desired leadership characteristics and so, to some extent, good leadership can be said to be Frommade.a personal perspective, many years ago when I first became a manager, I remember being terrified of public speaking. It was far from natural for me, but I knew I had to learn this skill if I was going to be effective in my role. Many years of practice has helped me overcome this fear and whilst not an expert in this space, it demonstrates that it is possible to learn to overcome such limitations.
Leaders need to inspire
Think about the great leaders you know – it is through their words and actions, not their directives, that they inspire action in others.
Star News Needlocalstaff? Thengiveusthejob... Need local staff? Then give us the job... we will advertise it in our employment section and attract local staff 12544970-HC15-22 NEWS TAKING CARE IAN ASH OF BUSINESS
So here’s a question you hear from time to time: “Are good leaders born or made?” What do you think? Are there people that are a natural fit for a leadership position or is this something that anyone can take on, given sufficient drive and interest? Before we explore this a bit further, let’s look at what leadership is. You can find many definitions for this: · “Organising a group of people to achieve a common goal.” - Wikipedia. · “Bringing out the best in others and yourself.” - Liberty Leadership Training · “Leadership is influence, nothing more and nothing less.” - John C Maxwell. But the one I like best is the one I recently learnt while watching a Jim Collins webcast: · “The art of getting people to want to do what must be done.” - Jim Collins. There are some very subtle but important aspects to this definition, in particular, noting it is an art and not a science. This implies leadership cannot be affected by simply adhering to a set of rules but instead includes within it an inherent element of creativity. The other key element is it is not about ordering people to do things but true leadership is about influence so that people ‘want to do what must be done’. Great leaders bring people with them through vision and engaging the hearts and minds of those that decide to follow. Think about the great leaders you know – it is through their words and actions, not their directives, that they inspire action in others.
Examples include Martin Luther King who had a dream, John F Kennedy who created the vision of landing a man on the moon when the US was trailing Russia in the exploration of space back in 1961 and Winston Churchill who inspired an entire nation to rally when it looked like Great Britain would be defeated in World War II. In business, there is a neat distinction between management and leadership that I would like to share:“Management is about doing things right while leadership is about doing the right things.” This simply explains why some managers don’t make great leaders and also why some leaders aren’t necessarily good at doing things right. So back to the initial question: ‘Are good leaders born or made?’

Roundtable boosts health
In the nearly 18 months since the Royal Commission handed down its report, considerable work has started on providing support in the Gippsland region including tailored support for young people and the Hospital Outreach Post-suicidal Engagement (HOPE) program for people in a mental health crisis. This recent visit follows the successful and productive roundtable convened last year which was attended by a large number of local services and organisations. Ms Crugnale said she was working to improve care across the community.
The Victorian Budget 2022/23 provided $1.3 billion for brand-new Mental Health and Wellbeing initiatives for all Victorians build ing on last year’s record investment of $3.8 billion.

“There is a strong appetite and absolute commitment by all our agencies, organisations and services in the sector to work together to create a truly integrated system for our mental health service users in Bass Coast and South Gippsland,” she said.
“This incredible group is completely aligned about the needs of our sub-region and this roundtable was all about delivering more Mental Health Services locally.“
Bass MP Jordan Crugnale hosted a roundtable with the Minister for Mental Health Gabrielle Williams at the Phillip Island Health Hub last week.Stakeholders were able to spend quality time with Minister Williams, and a senior ex ecutive member from the Victorian Depart ment of Health, to outline the region’s oppor tunities for improvement. Those in attendance included Jan Child Bass Coast Health (BCH) chief executive, Paul Greenhalgh South Gippsland Hospital (SGH) chief executive, local police, paramedics, men tal health clinicians, and, Bass Coast College. BCH, on behalf of the South Gippsland Coast Partnership (comprising Gippsland Southern Health Service, SGH, Koo Wee Rup Health Service and BCH) have undertaken consultation, across the two shires on a men tal health service plan for the sub-region. The planning exercise is in the final stages of developing a series of recommendations to improve future service delivery.

Stakeholders were also able to discuss the 2022/23 Budget which included $12 million to support families whose children and young people are accessing acute care in regional Victoria, including Gippsland, with programs for parents to help strengthen relationships with their children and increase skills and con fidence to support emerging mental health and wellbeing challenges.

“We don’t need those politics, footballers need to play, train and enjoy each other’s company – the last thing they want is to worry about that stuff off the field. “They were terrific, I can’t credit them enough.”Inachange room filled with emotion post game, many Lions voiced their praise for a resilientOnegroup.ofthose voices was captain Chris Cardona, who promised he is yet to play his final game, but will be relinquishing the captaincy in 2023.Green couldn’t thank Cardona enough, while also not giving much away on whether he will coach on next season.

Fittingly, he will step up to the plate an even four decades after his father Stephen led the then ROC Football Club to its maiden open-age premiership.
“We now set forth in looking for the other positions within the club, both the reserves and the under-19 coaching roles, as well as a women’s coach for 2023. “It’s exciting for our club, we’re starting fresh and we’ll soon be putting out an expression of interest for those who want to jump on Aboard.”vast majority of the current playing group has re-signed in light of Charles signing on as senior coach.

The Hawks – particularlyTaylor Joyce (three goals) – looked ominous going forward early, but also failed to kick truly and put the Lions away.Trailing by 26 points at the main break, Pakenham was in desperate need of the first ma jor of the third period - and a spark to bring it back to life. It came in style through Kane Tyrrell, who produced a sensational snap from deep in the pocket to bring his side within three goals. While a splendid Kai Linde set-shot split the Lions three third-term goals, Pakenham played approximately 15 minutes of its own football, trimming the margin to 16 points ahead of the final change. But a red-time goal from Joyce – his second – burst the balloon of the Lions, who despite having all of the ascendancy had somehow only shaved the margin by four points in the third stanza.

famously steered Doveton from a season without celebration in 2018 to the ultimate glory in 2019. And with Officer falling from the top flight as a result of just two wins this season, Charles is confident it won’t take much for him to turn this group around. “I suppose it will help, knowing I have been in a similar situation before,” he said of his rebuild experience. “It’s just about getting the right people at the club and helping to develop the young kids.“Having people that are willing to learn to play with their teammates and become really good teammates.

Officer Football Club president Nick McLennan was stoked to have Charles put pen to paper and further revealed how he believes the dark times at the Roos will be short lived.“We’re rapt to get Charlesy,” he said.
“I have fond memories from back then and telling dad I was going to go for the job… he got a bit excited, because he really enjoyed his time at ROC,” Charles revealed of his link to theCharlesclub.

“I think Officer is in a similar situation, coming off a tough year this year, but they’ve got some really good kids and hopefully we can get some good senior heads around them.”Charles spent 2022 coaching an underage Indigenous Victorian basketball side, and while he admits the structure of basketball won’t be comparable to footy, he is looking forward to translating those learnings into a club that’s bursting at the seems with junior participation.“Ireallymissed it this year, I love coaching, I had the year off coaching football this year, but I managed to get a gig coaching the under-14 Indigenous Victorian basketball team, so that kept me busy for the early part of the year,” he said. “I learned the way different people learn and how to find structures for other people. “It’s very exciting, the juniors, it’s one of the things that attracted me to the club, knowing it’ll be nice to coach at a job that actually has an influx of kids coming through each“Thatyear.part is exciting, I know they struggled on field a little bit this year, but I think they’ve got some talented kids coming through.“SoIthink if we can get the right people around them, the bounce back will be fairly quick.”While he expects the bounce back to be swift, Charles isn’t making any promises on an identical Doveton-like transformation. However, he is making one promise… his Roos will be entertaining to watch! “As far as game style goes, I want the team to play a brand that people actually enjoy watching and people enjoy playing,” he said. “A style that gives those that come to watch something to talk about, make them want to come back next week. “For me as a coach, my number one asset is that I care, I actually care about the people that I coach, it’s not all about what they can do for you on field, but how they’re going off it as“Iwell.have always been one that likes to develop and help people improve.”
“He ultimately understands how to win a flag in this comp, which for us is very exciting.“History is always a factor when looking at big decisions, but certainly in the case of Charlesy, he got the gig purely and squarely because he was the right man for the job at this particular moment.
By Tyler Lewis Pakenham has fallen out of Outer East Premier Division finals contention in dramatic fashion. While the Lions sat four points and percentage ahead of Monbulk, they still needed to defeat the Hawks, as the competition ruling protects form between two sides that sit equal on Aspoints.Monbulk won the round-nine encounter in June, it was a ‘win and in’ scenario for Ash Green’s men. But the tilt for finals football took an early hit for the visitors, when skipper Chris Car dona suffered an injury close to the boundary line in the opening 10 minutes of the game. And despite a first quarter from Zac Stewart that comfortably grossed at least 12 disposals and three intercept marks, the Lions couldn’t apply the pressure on the scoreboard.
A shattered Green said his boys left everything out there and came up short in the last.
“Yeah as I said I am proud of the boys, but we just ran out of legs,” he said. “You lose your captain in the first 10 minutes of the game… if we had have won we would’ve had a lot of changes for next week. “To Monbulk’s credit they were terrific today… yeah it’s disappointing, it’s just been one of those years. “We have to learn from it; hopefully we go into 2023 with a different attitude.”
“He has been fantastic and a really good leader for us,” Green said. “We were struggling in my first year at the club, and he stood up, I don’t worry about what he does on the field, more about what he does off the field – he has been a wonder ful “Ileader.honestly don’t know (about my future), I have to sit down over the next few days with my family and have a chat with the club to see their thoughts.

Footy was nefarious to Pakenham this season, both on field with a heavy injury toll, and off field a long time before a footy had even been bounced. “I won’t whack the previous structure, but a lot of us probably wouldn’t have been here if it went that way,” Green said of the pre-season drama.“Tonot have the rooms, Derrick (Brown) had to jump up and be president with Aaron’s (Green) support.
“I love the club and I’ll see what I can do for the club… I don’t know, I will see over the next couple of days where I am at.“ Narre Warren, Woori Yallock, Wandin, Olinda Ferny Creek and Monbulk will all feature in the finals series.

Daniel Charles to lead Kangaroos into a new frontier
“I think that was the main thing that turned Doveton around; you had people that were willing to learn and improve, whether they were 32 years old, or 16 years old, they did what was best for the team.
Daniel Charles knows what it takes to win premierships.
It was party time for Monbulk in the fourth, which appeared to have another quarter of footy left in the legs. After Adam Alberni kicked the Lions to within 16 at the 18-minute mark of the third, the Hawks piled on six of the next seven majors to secure the 12.12 (84) to 5.6 (36) victory.

Pakenham won the return clash – by five points in overtime. “Last time we beat them at home both teams scored over 100 points, so they’re a very hard team to stop scoring, so that has got to be a focus for us being at our place,” Roberts said. “Both teams are very strong offensively, I just hope our team can stem them a little bit and hold off their score.”
