Painful parking By Jamie Salter Pakenham residents are struggling to find a parking space along Main Street during peak times, with some questioning whether there is sufficient parking in the area. Local resident Chloe Watkins has struggled to find parking and said something must be done to meet the demand. Ms Watkins belongs to the Probus Club and, with the group, regularly attends outings along Main Street, but said they struggle to find a car park near their choice of venue.
“Many of the ladies in the club are very elderly and need to park close to the business; if this continues, we won’t be able to go there anymore.” A Cardinia Shire Council spokesperson said there were a number of parking options in the Pakenham Major Activity Centre including private and public parking. “As detailed in our Pakenham Parking Precinct Plan (June 2019), there is a total of 4177 parking spots in the Pakenham Major Activity Centre for both public parking and private
parking,” they said. The council’s Pakenham Structure Plan 2021 states there are a number of underutilised potential development and car parking sites, which could provide major mixed-use opportunities close to both shops and public transport. “The footprint of the core retail area should transition away from a centre dominated by single-storey buildings with large at-grade car parking areas, to a more intensified centre with multi-level buildings and multi-deck car parking with active frontages
along all streets.” A round three Victorian Government Growing Suburbs Fund 2021/22 grant was awarded to the council to upgrade road infrastructure in Pakenham. The council has prepared a draft Public Realm Strategy for the Pakenham Centre, drawn from the objectives of the Pakenham Structure Plan and the Urban Design Framework. In 2023, the council will commence community consultation regarding development of an implementation plan.
