Hot on the election campaign, Prime Minister Scott Morrison has shared birthday cake and roti with volunteers at an Officer Sikh temple.

The PM visited the Officer Sikh Gurdwara ‘Siri Guru Nanak Darbar (SGND)’ on Saturday 14 May to help La Trobe candidate Jason Wood announce a Liberal election promise of $500,000 for security upgrades to both Officer Gurdwara and Pakenham Gurudwaraand.

If elected, the funding will ensure the temples are safer for all users by upgrading new lighting, fencing and ensuring there is CCTV as well as improving overall accessibility.

La Trobe MP Jason Wood said he was proud to have secured the funding promise.

“The Prime Minister has been very clear about our government’s commitment to protecting places of worship in Australia, particularly after the tragic events in Christchurch,“ he said.

“In my capacity as the Federal Member but also the Assistant Minister for Community Safety, I want to thank the entire Gurudwara for their support of our wider Australian community, these upgrades will be welcome by many!”

While at the Gurdwara, the PM spent time in the community kitchen where he learnt the cultural way to prepare the community meal ‘langar’, especially the Indian bread ‘roti’.

The PM was also given a birthday cake to celebrate his 54th birthday the day before.

In a Facebook post, Mr Morrison thanked the Gurdwara for the “warm welcome”.

“A special thank you as well for the cake to celebrate my birthday, which was yesterday.

Great to get some tips on how to make a good roti bread too,” he said.

Racing to beat cancer

By Shelby Brooks In memory of their patriarch, Pakenham’s Clough family has helped raise $46,000 for local charities and pancreatic cancer research.

The Clough Charity Race Night was held at Pakenham Racecourse on Thursday 12 May with over 200 guests in attendance, raising money for the Pancare Foundation, Frankie’s Community Kitchen, Make-a-Wish CardiniaCasey Branch and Cardinia Foundation.

The night was in memory of Bruce Clough, the beloved Mazda businessman who passed from a battle of pancreatic cancer over six years ago.

In recognition and celebration of Bruce, over the past three annual race nights the Clough family have raised over $118,000 to fight pancreatic cancer.

Led by Bruce’s daughter-in-law, Tamara Clough, the fundraising event banded the community through dining, auctions and awards with a great result of fun and funds raised toward these worthy causes.

“Throughout the night we held a live auction, silent auction, raffles, picking competition and everyone gave so generously. Over the last three events (2018, 2019 and 2022) we have raised a total of $118K,” she said.

Pakenham Mazda business development manager Wade Calderwood said he helped create the concept with the family in 2017.

“Since then it’s gone from strength to strength,” he said.

“Bruce was the patriarch of the family and was a local icon. He created a tow service vehicle in the mid-1970s in Nar Nar Goon before he started selling cars.”

Wade said the employees at Pakenham Mazda was “very happy” with how the fundraiser went.

“Of all the fundraisers held at the racecourse on a Thursday race night [we believe] this has been the most successful ever,” he said.

“People have been extraordinarily generous. We were blown away.”

Community consultation for Pakenham level crossing Early works are underway in Pakenham to remove three dangerous and congested level crossings at Main Street, McGregor Road and Racecourse Road and locals are invited to express their interest in being part of a community group as construction progresses.

Major construction on the Pakenham level crossing removal project will start in the coming months, and the Level Crossing Removal Project is seeking community members to join the project’s Stakeholder Liaison Group (SLG).

The group will meet regularly during the construction phase of the project from mid2022 to 2024 and will share local perspectives, particularly in relation to managing construction impacts on the community.

The group will also provide information to the community about the project and construction progress.

residents, business owners and community organisations. The Level Crossing Removal Project would love to hear from a diverse range of Pakenham locals as work continues on the project.

The three level crossings will be removed by building a rail bridge over the roads, creating new community open space for locals to enjoy for generations to come.

The rail bridge design with a new premium Pakenham Station will improve safety, reduce road congestion and allow more trains, more often. The metropolitan rail line will be extended by two kilometres and a new East Pakenham Station will be built.

Early works on the project include site set up in Bourke Park, temporary fencing installed, and installation of temporary overhead power along the rail line in Pakenham.

Additionally, as part of the Pakenham Level Crossing Removal Project, this month’s State Budget confirmed funding for the Ryan Road upgrade in East Pakenham.

The project will asphalt the road to provide safe access to the new East Pakenham Station when it opens in 2024.

Taking on the violence

By Jamie Salter As the prevalence of family violence increased throughout the coronavirus pandemic, the conversation around prevention has never been more important.

A two-day Community Leadership Summit has returned post Covid-19 lockdowns to stop, prevent and end family violence in Cardinia Shire by working together to increase awareness.

A Cardinia Shire Council initiative, the Together We Can summit kicked off on Tuesday 17 May at the Cardinia Cultural Centre.

Landing on Domestic Violence Awareness Month, the summit opened with an official Welcome to Country and smoking ceremony form the Bunurong Land Council.

Mayor Jeff Springfield presented a powerful commitment from council to prevent family violence.

“Our council have committed to this cause and the idea of preventing family violence through what we can do as a council as leaders and members of our community,“ Cr Springfield said.

“We have one shared agenda. This is a marathon, not a sprint and our efforts will create generational and cultural change.

“We are all role models for equality and respect and our silence should no longer be encouraged.“ Faith leaders, cultural leaders, chief executive officers, people with lived experiences and people with specialist knowledge will take part in the two-day summit.

Cardinia Shire Council collective impact facilitator Fiona Cost said she was excited to see leaders come together again after two years.

“This is such a great opportunity to reinvigorate Together We Can and get that message out again to the whole community,“ she said.

“Cardinia Shire is so committed to stopping, preventing and ending family violence

- we’ve got some fantastic presenters and have so much support from out providers.

“Ultimately we have a job to do and that is to support people experiencing and perpetrating family violence.“ In response to a key recommendation from the Royal Commission into Family Violence, The Orange Door network established hubs across Victoria including South East Melbourne to bring together family violence services.

The Orange Door service system navigator Andy Young presented the keynote address on day one of the summit to share how the community can access these services.

“The Orange Door is not the answer, it is part of the solution,“ Mr Young said.

“We’re trying to achieve safety, reduce the risk of violence, keep children out of the child protection system and deliver an informed service of choice where people can come and tell their story when they’re ready to escape family violence.“ Mr Young said men needed to be included in the conversation for real change to occur.

“We will never keep people who are experiencing violence safe unless we hold those to account who are perpetrating or using violence in a relationship, so each one of us is responsible for having those difficult conversations with men,“ he said.

The Pakenham Orange Door opened in November 2021 and is is operated by Family Safety Victoria in partnership with a number of services such as Anglicare, WAYSS and Uniting.

Mr Young encouraged the community to reach out to their neighbours and to contact The Orange Door when concerned for someones safety.

Cardinia Shire Council is inviting the community to a flag raising ceremony on Friday 27 May to commemorate the start of National Reconciliation Week in 2022.

The event will include an Acknowledgement of Country, the flag raising ceremony, speeches by local Indigenous Elders and Cardinia Shire Mayor Jeff Springfield, afternoon tea and a range of fun activities for children and families.

“This event provides an opportunity to bring Cardinia Shire local residents together in order to build stronger relationships between Indigenous and non-indigenous community members,” Mayor Springfield said.

Rescue package Federal Labor has announced a $15 million pledge, if elected to government, to support media publishers hit by spiraling newsprint costs.

The rescue package was swiftly matched by the Federal Government, sealing bipartisan support for independent outer-suburban publishers such as Star News Group.

On 13 May, Labor opposition communications spokesperson Michelle Rowland said ithe ALP would support local media diversity and public-interest journalism with a “principles-based, evidence-informed and sustainable” approach.

“Regional and local newspaper publishers remain exposed to external shocks, such as newsprint price increases which threaten to wipe out local newspaper titles for good,” Ms Rowland said.

“Labor raised the alarm on the newsprint crisis last month and extended bipartisan support for the formulation of a crisis response during the pre-election caretaker period.

“If Scott Morrison had done his job properly by supporting public interest journalism with measures that were recommended well before Covid-19 and the war in Ukraine, the sector would have been on a more sustainable footing to absorb this price increase.”

The package includes a $10 million fund for regional publishers, and $5 million for independent suburban, First Nations and multicultural newspaper publishers.

Ms Rowland also announced a $12 million fund for community broadcasting, and would keep community TV station Channel 31 on air.

cause of “Scott Morrison’s failure to provide policy coherence or a stable set of support measures to help sustain the local media that millions of Australians rely on”.

“It is unacceptable that the Liberal National government has distributed tens of millions in grants without a clear plan.”

Days earlier, the Coalition offered $10 million support to regional newspapers only.

It caused an outcry from snubbed outersuburban publishers such as Star News Group.

After the ALP promise, Communications Minister Paul Fletcher swiftly matched the extra $5 million for independent suburban, First Nations and multicultural publishers.

“The Coalition Government recognises the important role our local newspaper publishers play in keeping Australia’s communities informed,” Mr Fletcher said.

“We also understand they are under pressure due to the dramatically rising costs of

newsprint driven by ongoing volatility overseas.

“We will move urgently to deliver the funding, with payments expected to be made early in the new financial year.”

Mr Fletcher said the Coalition remained concerned about the impact of “Labor’s safeguard mechanism” on increasing costs for paper manufacturing in Australia and the “flowon impacts that will have for the future of our local newspapers”.

According to the Government, newsprint costs are expected to rise by up to 80 per cent from 1 July due to multiple worldwide factors.

They include international demand, Covid, the war in Ukraine, rising input costs in Europe, oil prices and global shipping issues.

Star News Group publishes newspapers in the South East, including Pakenham-Berwick Gazette, Berwick Star News, Cranbourne Star News and Dandenong Star Journal.

Drugs seized in Pakenham Police have arrested six people and seized a quantity of drugs from an address in Pakenham after members from the SD3 Divisional Response Unit (DRU) executed a search warrant at an address on Belvedere Drive.

Officers seized a number of items including illegal drugs, believed to be cocaine, MDMA pills, ecstasy pills, prescription drugs, cannabis and cash.

Six people were arrested at the scene.

Two were issued with drug diversions and one was given a cannabis caution.

A 23-year-old female from Pakenham and a 27-year-old male from Narre Warren South were released pending summons.

A 21-year-old Pakenham man was charged with trafficking and possessing cocaine and amphetamines and dealing in property suspected of being the proceeds of crime.

He was bailed to appear at the Dandenong Magistrates Court on Friday 16 September.

Berwick hit and run Police are appealing for witnesses to a hit run collision in Berwick on Wednesday 4 May. In dash cam footage posted on the Eyewatch- Cardinia Police Service Area Facebook page, the offending vehicle moved from the left lane into the right lane on Clyde Road, just past Bemersyde Drive, colliding with another vehicle just after 8pm.

As a result of the impact, the victim’s vehicle mounted the median strip and hit a light pole, knocking the pole down and narrowly missing other vehicles, police said.

The victim suffered minor injuries.

The offending vehicle, believed to be a 2010 Holden Cruze, left the scene without stopping and exchanging details.

Anyone who may have witnessed the collision or has dash cam footage is asked to contact First Constable Adams at Casey Highway Patrol on 5991 0600.

Poultry farm improves sustainability Lang Lang poultry farm Daily Fresh Eggs is improving its sustainability with a $29,250 Victorian Government’s Agriculture Energy Investment Plan (AEIP) grant.

The program is supporting Victorian agribusinesses to improve their productivity by exploring new ways to be more energy efficient.

Bass MP Jordan Crugnale and Agriculture Minister Mary-Anne Thomas visited Austong International on Tuesday 10 May to see how the business has used the grant to upgrade a refrigeration system for the ‘Daily Fresh Eggs’ - where eggs are produced each day for supermarkets.

The new refrigeration system is expected to generate up to $6,169 in on-farm energy savings per annum.

Daily Fresh Eggs general manager Karen Li said the grant safeguards the quality of the eggs and boosts energy savings.

“The Victorian Government’s Agriculture Energy Investment Plan grant has enabled us to upgrade our refrigeration system, ensuring our coolroom can now maintain constant temperatures,“ she said.

Ms Crugnale said the program was a great initiative.

“It supports businesses to become more climate resilient and productive which in turn is good for local jobs and our local economy,“ she said.

Ms Thomas said she was proud to back businesses like Daily Fresh Eggs to be more sustainable into the future.

“Our farmers are leading the way when it comes to adapting to the changing climate and becoming more energy efficient on farm,“ she said.

Since its establishment in 2018, the AEIP has provided free on-farm energy assessments, a grants program, research and demonstrations of energy efficient technology to support farm businesses.

To date, the AEIP has provided more than 1,300 free on-farm energy assessments and a total of 650 grants worth more than $38 million.

Teen taking on the world

By Eleanor Wilson Despite only receiving her Australian citizenship a few short years ago, 18-year-old Skye Wallace has wasted no time in her bid to represent the nation.

The Berwick student, who hails from a town near Manchester in England, has been selected to don the green and gold when she competes in the World Duathlon Championships in Romania next month.

The race involves a grueling sequence of a five kilometre run, 22.5 kilometre bike ride and a second two-and-a-half kilometre run.

“The dedication to the 4:15am alarms, tough training weeks, missed parties and forever sweaty and chlorinated hair has started to pay off!” she shared in a post on her Facebook page.

Mum Ruth Wallace said she was extremely proud of her daughter’s dedication - which sees her train an average of two hours everyday across swimming, running and bike riding disciplines.

“I’m proud, I’m excited..she’s worked very hard for it,” Mrs Wallace said.

“When we moved here she was determined to represent Australia so she’s really proud to achieve that.”

But the triumph doesn’t come without its challenges.

Skye is now faced with the difficult task of financing her trip, including flights, accommodation, race entry, a race kit and training camps - a steep feat for an 18-year-old working part time while balancing training and a physiotherapy degree.

To assist with the heavy costs of making it to Romania for the race, Skye set up a donation page with the Australian Sports Foundation.

The page has amassed over $1500 the short week it has been running, with friends, family and locals offering messages of support for the young sport star.

“We see you every morning on our way to the train station. Rain, hail, shine, dark. Our

Mrs Wallace said the army of local support surrounding her daughter comes down to the fact “she’s a great kid”.

“I’m biased, but she’s a really good kid,” Mrs Wallace said.

“I think people see her around a lot, because she is always out exercising and she’ll always smile and say hello.”

Skye will compete in the World Duathlon Championships on 10 June and just nine days later will head to Germany for the European Junior Triathlon Championships.

Focus on drug drivers

Roadside drug tests in Greater Dandenong, Casey and Cardinia Shire by Frontline Tactical Unit police since 1 February have detected more than two dozen drug drivers, police say.

It’s the first time police outside of Highway Patrol units and booze and drug bus operations have conducted driver drug testing.

So far, 27 drug drivers have been detected.

“This trial means there is nowhere to hide if you think it’s acceptable to drive on drugs,” Senior Sergeant Luke Holmes of the Southern Metro Region Division 3 Frontline Tactical Unit said.

“Some people think they can spot the police cars that do this type of testing. Now, any police car in their rearview mirror could be the one that catches you.“ According to Victoria Police, drug driving is a rising factor in the road toll. It contributes to about 30 per cent of deaths on the road.

Methamphetamine is the most common substance detected in roadside drug tests.

In 2021, 33 lives were lost on South East roads – more than four times higher than the nine deaths in the previous year.

Drugs were a factor in several of the fatal crashes.

So far in 2022, seven people have died on South East roads.

Assistant Commissioner Glenn Weir said: “Make no mistake. Drugs are a killer on Victoria’s roads.

“This initiative is just one way we’re detecting and deterring impaired drivers who think it’s OK to get behind the wheel and put the safety of others at risk.“ The trial will continue until the end of the month.

Victoria Police will then consider whether to expand its drug driver testing regime of about 150,000 tests a year.

As we approach the colder months on the calendar, Casey North Community Support & Information Service (CNCISS) are seeking donations of unwanted coats and jackets, as part of its annual Winter Coat Drive.

While Victorians are yet to officially enter the winter months, CNCISS program manager Julie Leonidas said the program was already off to a flying start thanks to leftover stock from last year’s drive.

“We had about 60-70 left over from last year as it was interrupted by Covid and they are already disappearing fast,” she said.

“We’ve probably given away half of them and we’ve only been going for a couple of weeks so we aren’t going to last the whole winter.”

“The number of people coming in is increasing and the complex nature of reasons people come in is just increasing also,” she said.

“We’re envisioning things are only going to get tougher.”

Tennis club upgrade plea Officer Tennis Club is advocating for improved facilities for the 87 year old building it calls home.

A petition by members of the club has been presented to Cardinia Shire Council with 98 signatures, asking for support from the shire to upgrade paths of travel, pavilion accessibility including construction of an accessible toilet, disabled car parking bays and suitable change

facilities for females.

Councillor Tammy Radford said it was important to highlight the issues this club was facing.

“This club has reached its capacity and is struggling to meet the current demands and projected future demands,” she said at the council meeting on Monday 16 May. “It sits within a major growth area in our

shire in officer and is lacking in basic facilities.”

Ms Radford said the pavilion was built in 1935 and only offers one female and one male toilet, with no change facilities or showers.

“Tennis third most popular club activity,” she said.

“But it current does not provide a safe, accessible and welcoming place for the LGBTQI+ community, people with disability, the aging

community, the CALD community or anyone in the community in general.

“This is a council asset and the Officer Tennis Club does not have the funding capacity to complete the works it so desperately requires.”

The petition will be investigated with a report due to council for the July council meeting.

World War II soldiers now honoured at Officer On Saturday 14 May, the Officer Public Hall Committee held the unveiling of the WWII Honour Board.

Over 100 people were in attendance while La Trobe MP Jason Wood unveiled the board, the majority were descendants of the 81 service men and women who enlisted from Officer.

Families of the descendants of the WWII veterans travelled from Werribee, Phillip Island and Inverloch to attend.

The honour board was made by the Berwick District Woodworkers Club and engraved by Berwick Signs. Penny Harris Jennings researched and compiled the names on the roll, the afternoon tea was arranged by the Officer CWA Owls.

Carol Porter, president of the Officer Hall Committee, said it was a wonderful afternoon and a great privilege for the Officer community to have this Honour Board now displayed in the Officer Public Hall.

By Jamie Salter Cardinia Shire Council partnered with Proud2Play to host the Parklife IDAHOBIT Movement Festival on Sunday 14 May to help encourage a sense of belonging within the shire.

Cardinia Shire Mayor Jeff Springfield attended the festival and enjoyed the free community event at James Bathe Reserve.

“It was a fun-filled day of sports such as Netball, Australian Rules Football, Soccer, Cricket, Lacrosse, Quidditch, entertainment, face painting, giveaways and food trucks,” Cr Springfield said.

“It was great to see so many members of our rainbow community!

“The event was a celebration of diversity, inclusion, movement and community connection.

“It was a way that we as a council could mark IDAHOBIT day – a time to celebrate our global LGBTIQ+ community and raises awareness for the work still needed to increase acceptance and reduce discrimination.”

He said council supports an inclusive community comprised of people from diverse backgrounds, including and not limited to, Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people, people from cultural and linguistically diverse (CALD) backgrounds, those identifying as LGBTIQ+, people of faith, and people of all ages, genders and abilities.

Push for Cardinia Life extension

Garfield resident Kelly Fitzgerald is joining the push to redevelop Cardinia Life after use of the facility helped her recover from a cycle accident in December 2021 that left her in a six day coma with 20 broken bones.

The redevelopment of Cardinia Life has been set as a council priority ahead of the upcoming May election.

Kelly said the support and encouragement from staff at the facility was an integral part of her recovery.

“Coming here saved my life and my sanity,” she said.

“It’s a place to come for rehab where you get addressed by name and the atmosphere is amazing.”

Kelly visits Cardinia Life’s indoor aquatic facility everyday.

She said although the centre has been essential in regaining her strength, there were not enough pool lanes for everybody to enjoy freely.

“If there was more room people could take their time a bit too because sometimes you feel like you’re in the way and it’s harder to come after work because kids are here after school,” Kelly said.

“There’s also not many classes for people who can’t swim.”

At more than 16 years old, Cardinia Life has reached capacity.

So far more than 395 people have had their say on the need to redevelop Cardinia Life, which is attended by more than 750,000 people every year.

Independent advisory body Infrastructure Victoria has called on the Victorian Govern-

ment to allocate $20,000 to Cardinia council to plan aquatic centres.

A Cardinia Shire Council spokesperson said this coincided with council’s own advocacy for aquatic funding.

“Cardinia Shire’s population growth has put our only indoor aquatic facility Cardinia Life beyond capacity and therefore it’s no longer able to meet the needs of our community,” the spokesperson said.

“Aquatic centres improve physical and mental health and wellbeing, and help build strong social networks within the community.

“Broadly the economic, health and social benefits from community sport such as swimming, basketball, netball which are conducted within Cardinia Life and active recreation are substantial.

“Across the state, the value of those benefits is estimated at over $7 billion.”

Recycling revolution here

By Marcus Uhe Melanie Bramble is changing the way people consider the distribution of their recyclable waste products through her Terracycle Community Collection Hub in Clyde.

Ms Bramble has eight collection bins in the front yard of her Pasadena Boulevard property, collecting a variety of products that are often not processed correctly at waste management facilities.

Among the items she collects are old toothpaste tubes and toothbrushes (both electric and manual), hair care product packaging, empty coffee-pod capsules, pet food packaging and old stationery.

Simply drop your items in the corresponding bin so that Ms Bramble can package them up and send them off to Terracycle to be distributed to the corresponding recycling facility.

“I’ve chosen which (products) I think go together,” Ms Bramble said.

“Each of the programs need to be shipped separately, but I don’t have enough space to have bins for absolutely every single one of the programs so I just sort of group them together in what ones are similar or easy to separate into other products.

“I’ve always been keen on recycling and everything like that. My parents did home composting, so when I moved out I made sure I was able to do home composts.”

Ms Bramble’s advocacy has created three collections points in eastern Melbourne – one at her parents’ house in Wantirna and one at her place of work in Aspendale Gardens.

She is also a volunteer for Lids4Kids, who repurpose bottle lids from liquid products like soft drinks, water and milk bottles.

Those lids, which are often left on bottles when disposed in kerbside waste, often go undetected by the machinery at recycling

It’s all been a part of the education process for her as the community takes more notice of how it can help the environment.

“Dental products and learning that the council don’t accept the majority of cleaning products in their recycling bin was a new one for me.

“I did (the council’s) online recycling seminar and learnt that the only products we’re supposed to recycle in their kerbside recycling bins is food and drink packaging, rather chemicals and stuff like that.

“I don’t think the majority of people know - I just assumed that if it’s got a recycling sign, that it can go in the recycling bin, but they may not get recycled at our local recycling place.”

Despite juggling the collection point with full-time work and her two children, she finds

it rewarding to know she is making a positive contribution to the environment.

“I’ve got my workplace on board as well so we have less rubbish at work. One of the girls (from work) has implemented some things at home as well, so their rubbish has gone from a normal bin size to a tiny one.

“I’ve had a few people even from Rosebud come up and say this is the closest lid or other collection point for them.”

“I feel good making a difference and getting the word out there.“ The collection point is located at 13 Pasadena Boulevard in Clyde.

Art show back in full swing Art Show Pakenham will be back in full swing this year with an exciting opening night gala to be held Friday 27 May. Held at the Cardinia Cultural Centre from 7pm, opening night will include the Wearable Art Parade fashion show- featuring a huge 17 entries.

The night also includes the announcement of all the major prize winners and entertainment by celtic harpist Elizabeth Sutherland.

It was the initiative that dished up smiles during lockdown, but now a decrepit looking Spoonville site in Pakenham is providing anything but joy.

During the one hour exercise limit - which is now a distant memory - Spoonville sites across Cardinia Shire were the most popular place to visit.

Despite the fad having died down entirely, the Cardinia Lakes community was understandably upset at news their local site appeared to have been targeted by cruel vandals.

Estate resident Laksika noticed the destroyed site during her daily walk on Sunday 24 January.

“I think someone has just walked over it or kicked them all over. It’s very sad to see it. We always used to stop there and have a look for new ones,” she wrote on Facebook.

The reaction from her neighbours was similar.

“Absolutely disgusting. The highlight of our walk is our toddler stopping to look and admire the spoons,” one local woman said.

“That’s so disappointing. My kids had spoons in there,” another woman added.

Pakenham Hills Ward councillor Jack Kowarzik said the news was “really frustrating”.

“Spoonville was created by locals for the enjoyment of local children and to see it vandalised is disappointing,” he said.

Cardinia Art Society president Jillian Ronald described Spoonville as an “amazing initiative” during Melbourne’s lengthy lockdown.

“It’s given joy and positivity in some very dark times and I just think it’s really disappointing that, when the community put together a project to support each other during a difficult time, that someone would take the trouble to destroy it. They’d be better off going home to create a spoon and putting it with

“I’d suggest there’s much better things they could do with their time.”

The ‘Spoonville’ trend was born out of Winnersh, England, in an attempt to improve mental health by simply making people happy as they were out and about during daily exercise.

The quirky saga soon made its way to Cardinia - after Australia’s first ever site was constructed up the highway in Longwarry.

Within weeks, the site had spread to Pakenham, Officer, Garfield, Nar Nar Goon, Emerald and Beaconsfield.

Ms Ronald acknowledged the Spoonville craze had now hit a dead end.

“They’re getting a little bit tired, so maybe it’s time for the spoons to come home,” she said.

Ms Ronald, who commissioned the two local sites at Lakeside in Pakenham, encouraged community members to collect their spoons from their local sites.

She added that in mid-February she’d look to clean up all remaining Spoonville’s and relocate any leftover spoons to an “undisclosed location”.

The once popular Spoonville trend appears to have hit a dead end.

Growth areas to decide Pakenham residents are among those in Australia’s outer suburbs that could deciding the outcome of the upcoming federal election.

National Growth Areas Alliance (NGAA), a national alliance of outer urban growth area councils, estimates more than a quarter of a million people have moved into outer urban growth areas in the past three years - around a five per cent increase since the last federal election.

NGAA chair Matthew Deeth said the election will provide the opportunity to catch up with the rapid population growth in Australia’s outer suburbs.

“Politicians need to recognise the population growth in the outer suburbs is not a blip but indicative of the future direction of living for millions of Australians.

“It’s essential these communities are equipped to flourish and thrive.”

Mr Deeth said the alliance was calling for a Minister of Growth Areas to advocate for the needs of the 5.2 million people living in fastchanging communities.

“For too long, investment in vital infrastructure has not kept up with the number of people moving to the fast-growing outer suburbs, leading to postcode discrimination, nightmare commutes, reduced productivity and declining liveability,” he said.

“The party that claims victory in the federal election will be the one that successfully prioritises the one in five Australians living in the outer suburbs and brings in a Minister for Growth Areas.”

With Australia’s outer suburbs growing twice as fast as the rest of the nation, voters in these areas will be pushing for improved cost of living and housing affordability.

Australian leading economist Saul Eslake said those living in the growth suburbs were disproportionately impacted by wider cost-ofliving items.

“But for those residing in the outer suburbs, it’s even more heightened. A lack of local employment opportunities means its residents are forced to commute into the CBDs.

“Combine this with the trend towards tollheavy roads, which is prolific in Sydney and Melbourne, and you can see how just this one cost – maintaining a vehicle – creeps up for those living in the growth areas in a way it does not for inner city residents.”

“The good news is that this shift presents new opportunities for growth areas willing to understand and adapt to this new economic landscape.”

In the very early morning of Mothers Day, in cold and wet conditions, we had approximately 84 horse and rider combinations attend the Pakenham Pony Club Combined Training and

Dressage Jackpot held Sunday 8 May. With the help of all our members, parents and friends we were able to run a very successful event combining two dressage tests and a show jump round.

Conditions were less than perfect, but the kids and the grown ups riding in the open class-

es had a great day. The grounds looked amazing and I thank all the volunteers who attended prior to the event to get them up to scratch.

We are so grateful to all the sponsors who came on board to make it such a successful day.These included Pakenham Produce and Saddlery, Markfi Gates, NRG, South East Cara-

It’s been a difficult couple of years for the club, with the council taking over the ground maintenance, Covid-19 shutting the grounds down to our members, and the cancellation of our major fundraising event due to the grounds not being up to scratch in February.

However, I’m very proud of all our members for pushing through and the wonderful efforts of the committee to get this comp up and running in such a short time.

Thank you to Capturemystrides photography for capturing some wonderful memories for our members.

We look forward to running a few more comps in the near future.

We run a rally on the fourth Sunday of every month and that we welcome people to come and look at we offer.

Eels slide into new home

By David Nagel The Pakenham Eels Rugby League Club is set for an electrifying future after recently taking the keys to a brand new purpose-built facility in Officer.

Just seven years since their inception, the Eels have a new place to call home.

The Comely Banks Recreation Reserve - on Bridge Road in Officer - boasts four international sized Rugby League turf pitches, club rooms, eight change rooms for players, and four for officials.

The facility also has full lighting, tiered bench seating and coaches and player boxes.

It’s a long way from the club’s inception year, where makeshift portables and toilets were used as club rooms at O’Neill Road Recreational Reserve in Beaconsfield.

For the last six years the Eels called the Cardinia Recreation Reserve their home.

Eels President Jason Buchanan, a founder of the club in 2016, was excited to see the first games played at the new facility on Saturday.

“It’s pretty incredible to see the facility we now have, but it’s taken a lot of work from a lot of people for a long time to get to this stage,” Buchanan said.

“The opportunities that it’s going to provide, not just to the club and club development, but to the players themselves, and their sporting development, are quite exciting.

“To get access to a full field, or even half a field, for training is something we’ve never had before.

“In the past we’d train in a little corner of a ground and the only experience of playing on a full field was on game day on a week-to-week basis.

“We’re already starting to see improvement in skills.

“From an overall club perspective, this is huge; it’s a big win for us and for the community as well.

“There’s a lot of opportunity for Rugby League and Touch Football in Pakenham and the Cardinia Shire as a result of this facility being built.”

The Eels have entered a record number of teams in the NRL Victoria League, including Under 6 and Under 7 teams in the Storm Junior

The club also has teams from Under 8 to Under 11 in the Storm Junior League Competition, and separate boys and girls teams in Under 13 and 15 age groups in the Club Rugby

League Competition.

The Eels also have a senior team competing in NRL Victoria’s Second Grade Men’s competition.

Hundreds of people were in attendance on

Saturday to see the new grounds christened by junior teams from five visiting clubs including Casey Warrior, Doveton Steelers, Eastern Raptors, Melton Broncos and the South Eastern Titans.

“I think we’re still all a little in awe of the venue itself and really enjoying our new home,” Buchanan said.

“I’m very happy and also very happy for all the dedicated volunteers and members that have made this possible over the last six or seven years.

“The Cardinia Shire has been a really strong partner in this development and has seen this through.

“We’ve worked quite closely with them, not just with this venue, but with community programs as well.

“This new facility will not only be great for training and development, but also for the many programs associated with the NRL. “Training and development of coaches and referees…the opportunities are also really big now in those areas as well.”

The Eels have a particular focus on their junior program, with an alcohol-free policy throughout the club purely designed to enhance the sporting experience for its youth.

“Juniors are our main focus and our junior programs have really healthy numbers,” Buchanan said.

“There is still a drop off due to Covid, but we’re really hopeful that we can attract a lot people back to the game and do that via rugby league or touch football in the summer.

“And we’re an alcohol free club that has a strong focus on junior sport - sport being for sport - and not as a vehicle for alcohol sales.”

Touch Football has attracted up to 300 players on the one pitch in recent seasons, with the club now excited it can now share the load evenly and create earlier timeslots.

Only three rounds into the 2022 season, there are still registrations spots available in most junior age groups.

Games are held on Saturday and training takes place on both Tuesday and Thursday evenings.

Lions rolling along nicely after back-to-back victories

By David Nagel The Pakenham women’s team is celebrating back-to-back wins for the first time this season after the Lions scored a comfortable 8.8.56 to 2.3.15 victory over Yarra Junction at Toomuc Reserve on Saturday.

The Lions played their best football of the season against Seville last week, scoring an 84-point victory, but were second to the footy in the early stages of Saturday’s contest.

There was plenty of dew on the ground for the 8.50am start and the visiting Eagles adjusted to the conditions better with Michelle Goldsmith kicking the games’ opener.

But the Lions midfield soon got on top with Abbey Tognazzini competing well in the ruck and allowing rover Bianca Moody, centre Courtney Stephens, and ruck-rover Chloe Nagel to have a major influence around the ground.

Moody was everywhere for the Lions and kicked two goals in three minutes to give the home side the ascendency.

And when full-forward Cahli Parker soon kicked another, the Lions took a 14-point lead into quarter time.

Pakenham coach Rick Stalker had asked his girls to play team football prior to the match, and the Lions shared the ball beautifully with some fluent chains of handball in the first term.

But Yarra Junction tightened the screws in the second quarter with neither team kicking a goal, with Kayla Menere playing a great quarter for the Lions at full back.

Top contenders emerge

The Lions have launched into the week off with a 4-1 ledger, but with a crucial trio of games following the week off – the importance of the rest hasn’t escaped coach Ash Green.

Like most sides, Pakenham has a few sore bodies and with Wandin, Woori Yallock and Monbulk in its sights after the bye, the Lions will relish the chance to put the feet up.

“We have a few sore boys that might not have pulled up if we played this week,” Green said.

“I like to think we will get a couple back in two weeks’ time.

“The next three weeks are really important for us, starting with Wandin; they’re in really good form too.

“Banking the wins early, as I keep stressing to the guys, we have to keep improving because no doubt every other side is going to do the same thing.”

It was an arm wrestle in the first term on Saturday against Upwey Tecoma, as conditions made it hard for neat football.

But the Lions gathered momentum in the second term, launching five unanswered goals to storm into the main break with a 32-point buffer.

The way in which his side capitalised in the second term impressed Green, who admitted he tries not to look at the scoreboard during games.

“We got the worst of the weather, in the seconds it was really wet and then we got the wind,” he said.

“I was actually surprised by the score line, I thought the game was a lot closer than it was at half time. I don’t really actually look at the scoreboard, but when we were up as much as we were I was taken back by it.

“It was the lesser names that stepped up on the weekend, I was really proud of them.”

With the premiership heroes of recent decades celebrating their success on the sidelines, Green and his side found inspiration in their accomplishments and proceeded to perform a terrific gesture after their 15.18 (108) to 5.8 (38) victory.

“Most of them, if not all of them, haven’t had a senior premiership at the Pakenham footy club,” he said of his current players.

“It has been that long since we had one, but

Frighteningly for other sides across the Premier Division, Maggies coach Shane Dwyer is confident his side can hit its full straps now after a stop-start beginning to the season.

“We spoke about how now we get a run at it as of the weekend, we don’t go one game (then) bye, or two games (then) bye,” he said.

“We sort of spoke that we get a good run at four games in a row, so hopefully – because we have been patchy here and there – because we haven’t got that continuous games.

“We have spoken about it before the weekend and the boys are pretty happy to get a run at it, it’s pretty hard to get them up and about when they know they have a week off.

“The fact we’re playing for a month in a row now gives us a chance to get to our best.”

Youngster Will Howe fired seven goals and the ever-green Jake Richardson slotted another six in the big win.

Dwyer praised Howe for his early signs up forward and revealed the reason for Richardson’s career best form.

“He was really good, he is a really good player, Will,” he said.

“He played full-back for the first few weeks and we threw him forward when (Jesse) Davies was injured, he has been excellent the last two games – think he’s kicked four and seven and he probably could’ve kicked 10 on the weekend.

“He is a lethargic type, but he is a really good young kid that can definitely play.

“I think with Jake it’s the fact he is kicking a bit straighter, in the first two games he was a bit wayward.

“He’s getting results because he is kicking straighter. He has done a power of work on it and it’s great to see him getting the results, he is a super player and he has been for a while…

I think he is getting the same amount of looks each week, it’s just he is converting.”

Narre Warren’s upcoming opponent – Woori Yallock – had a stumble on the weekend, dropping an expected win to Monbulk - 13.13 (91) to 13.6 (84).

Hawks star Taylor Joyce booted four in his side’s first win of the year.

In Division 1 it was a round of beltings, as the closest game was played between Gembrook Cockatoo and Yarra Glen, in which the Brookers collected a 41-point win.

Jay Verhagen snagged six and Myles Wareham added another five to his tally, as the Brookers recorded the 19.11 (125) to 12.12 (84) win.

Berwick Springs, meanwhile, made it two wins in as many weeks with a win over Belgrave.

The 15.20 (110) to 8.9 (57) win leaves the Titans just one win out of the four, but will have its work cut out this week when it hosts Gembrook Cockatoo.

Emerald bounced back after its loss to Seville with a thumping win over Healesville.

Patrick Chin kicked four in the Bombers 14.15 (99) to 6.7 (43) win.

That Bloods outfit will have another big challenge this week, when it travels to Seville which is fresh off a bye.

Thrilling throwing as Dale goes the perfect peg-out

By David Nagel A further highlight was added to the undefeated South West Gippsland Darts League (SWGDL) season of Just Social last week with a perfect 170-peg out guiding the ladderleaders to a 9-6 victory over Rebels.

Dale, who held the previous highest checkout of 158, hit the highest possible finish in darts with a brilliant treble 20 -treble 20 -bullseye finish to the leg.

Round 13 provided some high-quality darts with Dale’s extraordinary finish being complemented by a 104-peg out by Scott from the Mud Rats, while Aaron and Dean from Snipers were in terrific touch, hitting 10 and eight tons respectively.

And to cap off a great night at the oche, Thom from the Rebels hit his third 180 for the season!

With just one round remaining before finals, Just Social and Snipers are locked into first and second place, with Warriors only needing to avoid a whitewash against Middels to keep its place in the top four.

But the huge clash of round 14 sees fourth-placed Paky One and fifth-placed Rebels battling it out for the one remaining finals place.

The winner will march on and take on Warriors in the first semi-final, while the loser will tuck away the tungsten for another year.
