The ghosts and ghouls will no doubt be out to play this coming weekend, as Halloween is upon us once again! For this year’s spooky festivities on Sunday 31 October, kids in Pakenham’s Lakeside community are being encouraged to go big and dress up, and there’s a neat incentive for those who do. The Lakeside Residents Group wanted to make the most out of Halloween this year and as a way of giving back to the local community after a tough year, have organised a best dressed competition full of prizes for spooky youngsters. Wendy Andrews from the Lakeside Residents Group said that the organisation felt this was a great “way to give back to Lakeside residents and members”, and they hoped this fun-little competition would bring a smile to many peoples faces. “We have show bags, chocolate bags, hampers and pizza vouchers [to be won] as prizes,” Ms Andrews said. “The kids just need to send in a photo of themselves dressed up on Halloween to lakesidecommunity@ymail. com with their age, name and address and contact details.” The most creative costumes will win prizes, and winners will be contacted some time after the weekend. Freedom brings a nasty day on roads By Gabriella Payne Emergency service responders are urging drivers to stay safe and alert behind the wheel, after three separate car accidents occurred on Cardinia Shire roads within a matter of hours. All three accidents happened in the peak hour period on the morning of Wednesday 27 October, with the first one (in Officer) being called in at around 8am. Andrew Smith from Fire Rescue Victoria attended the first crash, which reportedly occurred on the Cardinia Road inbound ramp to the Monash Freeway (Princes Freeway). He described the collision, involving a truck and a car, as a “major hit“ which could have ended very badly. “That could have been a fatality - it was a really big hit,“ Mr Smith said. An Ambulance Victoria spokesperson confirmed that paramedics had been called to the scene of the Officer crash, but said that thankfully no one was seriously injured. “Ambulance Victoria was called to a report of a collision involving a truck just before 8am this morning in Officer,“ they said. “One person was assessed at the scene but wasn’t taken to hospital.“ Traffic was slow moving in both directions on the Monash Freeway that morning, after a multi-vehicle collision happened in the outbound lanes as well, at around 9am. This second accident in Officer occurred between the BP truck stop and the Cardinia Road exit, causing a bottleneck of vehicles as they veered around the left-lane accident. At almost the same time in Pakenham, another multi-car collision caused a car to flip on its side on the Princes Highway, at the corner of Army Road. Constable Kalin Ewaz from the Pakenham Police said that thankfully everyone involved in this crash was okay, but it was a scary experience for all involved nonetheless. “It appears that this vehicle (flipped car) was trying to make a U-turn (on the Princes Highway, heading east, away from Pakenham),“ Constable Ewaz said. “I believe they’ve had a green light, so

The woman who was driving the car that flipped was treated at the scene by paramedics, but appeared to have had a lucky escape. An Ambulance Victoria spokesperson said that she was treated “for upper body injuries” and later “taken to Dandenong Hospital in a stable condition”. Constable Ewaz said that he wasn’t sure why
there had been so many accidents in such a short space of time - but it was a good reminder to everyone to take care when behind the wheel. “Everyone is going back to work at the moment and it’s going to be peak hour, so it won’t be the same as a few days ago,“ he said. “Please be mindful on the roads.“ Andrew Smith from Fire Rescue Victoria reiterated Constable Ewaz’ sentiments and said that now that lockdown had been lifted, more and more people were getting back on the roads. “Because people haven’t been driving for so long and there’s so much traffic now, they just need to slow down and just be mindful of how to drive again,“ Mr Smith said.
Two ‘spud guns’ seized from an Officer premises have been found not to be firearms in a landmark case at Dandenong Magistrates’ Court. Amanda Lewis faced charges of possessing unregistered Category E longarms and possessing firearms whilst a prohibited person after police found the two PVC pipe guns on New Years’ Eve, 2019. In a sentence on 21 October, magistrate Gerard Bryant mused over a brief history of firearms, referencing military general Hannibal, fast bowler Jeff Thomson and comedy film Monty Python and the Holy Grail. He cited “organic matter” being used as wartime weapons – such as human remains and livestock being used in slingshots in medieval times. Hannibal had catapulted venomous snakes in clay jars at ships during a war against King Eumenes of Pergamon in 184BC, for example. In Monty Python and the Holy Grail, the knights of the round table were attacked by hurled livestock, Mr Bryant noted. Small children or dwarfs shot from circus cannons was a “big drawcard” in more recent times. But that form of “politically incorrect entertainment has now ceased”. “And the use of humans or livestock as projectiles has been made redundant,” Mr Bryant stated. The seized ‘spud gun’ was capable of being loaded with a potato or lemon, then fired by igniting hairspray with a sparkplug in the device’s combustion chamber. The contraption was capable of tearing through a cardboard target 30 metres away, according to police. A police ballistics expert said spuds could be fired at 130-140 metres a second – or 440 kilometres an hour. Much less than a bullet at 330 metres a second. Mr Bryant said category E longarms, including machine guns, rifles, bazookas and rocket-propelled grenades, were “inherently lethal”. He said it was doubtful that homemade PVC devices were envisaged in the same category. At worst, the weaponised spud could inflict bruising, broken bones and possible artery damage. Unlike bullets, the “humble potato or lemon” were not subject to any regulation under the Firearms Act. “Fruit and vegetables are not inherently lethal and are not manufactured, but instead grown by organic means for human consumption.” Mr Bryant concluded the ‘spud guns’ – also known as ‘veggie cannons’, ‘fruit cannons’ and ‘lemon bazookas’ – were not firearms under the Act. He dismissed the charges, but stated his decision “should not be interpreted as a green light for the citizens of Victoria to arm themselves with these types of devices for any purpose”. “At a minimum, such devices could be rightly categorised as ‘dangerous articles’ under the Control of Weapons Act 1990.”

Turf club buys RSL By Danielle Kutchel As the saying goes, when one door closes, another opens – and that’s looking to be the case for the Cranbourne RSL. The RSL’s location on the South Gippsland Highway closed its doors for good this week, after a protracted sale process. The building has been purchased by the Cranbourne Turf Club. But John Wells, president of the Dandenong-Cranbourne RSL sub-branch, said the Cranbourne RSL would continue into the future. “We’ve sold the building, not the subbranch,” he explained. He said the organisation was now focused on looking for a new location to house Cranbourne veterans, a process he anticipates being completed within 12 months. Much of the money from the sale of the old Cranbourne building would be put towards finding a new home, he added. The new location would still have space for veterans’ favourite past-times like carpet bowls. Mr Wells said the sale was tinged with a “sense of great sadness”, as well as a sense of personal failure at having never gotten Cranbourne back in the black. “There were losses so dramatic that in the end, they would pull Dandenong down too,” he said. While Mr Wells was unable to reveal how much the Turf Club has paid for the RSL, he said: “it cost Dandenong $11 million; we got less than half that back”.

Iconic eatery up for grabs By Shelby Brooks and Parker McKenzie An iconic Cranbourne dining spot and attached motel is expected to make between $6.3-6.5 million after being listed for sale earlier this month. The 6,089 square metre property at 110 Sladen Street, where the Bear House Restaurant and Mahogany Park Motel operate, has been on the market for two weeks. The Bear House is recognisable by its distinctive log cabin restaurant and quaint motel rooms nestled next door to the Cranbourne Rotary Park. New Century Real Estate agent Kim Ke there had been high interest in the unique property, however the restaurant and motel businesses are not up for sale and are expected to remain operating as is for the meantime. “The agency has fielded a number of

School back too soon By Parker Mckenzie and Shelby Brooks A Berwick principal feels his students returned from remote learning too soon after 18 students contracted Covid-19 since classroom learning resumed. Berwick Lodge Primary School principal Henry Grossek is facing a wave of Covid infections which has seen 106 children currently in isolation. The school was closed last week after a positive Covid case attended the premises. Less than 60 per cent of the student body came to school when it reopened on Tuesday 26 October. Mr Grossek told Star News that 43 per cent of parents didn’t send their kids to school. “They are fearful of either their children catching Covid from another child or having to do 14 days isolation themselves,“ he said. Those 105 students who were absent left the school with only 209 out of a possible 610 enrolled students in attendance. “That is a worse outcome than remote learning, which for all its deficiencies was far more predictable,” Mr Grossek said. “On any given day we could be shut down again, so my opinion is that remote learning, no matter how unpalatable it is right now, is a better option for primary schools in Melbourne.” Mr Grossek said that the school was struggling with staff numbers because of close contacts needing to isolate. “It’s led to a staffing shortage, we’ve had 37 teachers who are primary contacts too,” he said. “There are 37 people who can’t work for either one or two weeks depending on their status and parents have to stay home with their kids who are self-isolating because they are in a household with a primary contact.” Mr Grossek believes the number of students and teachers currently absent from the

this that are quite serious as well.” Mr Grossek is worried other schools will face the same issues in the future. “Casey is in a very bad way in terms of the number of kids who are catching Covid,” he said. “I’ve got 18 kids now who have caught Covid, and while none of them are seriously ill there are so many outcomes that are surely

worse than remote learning.” According to the Department of Health, Berwick Fields Primary School has also been named a key outbreak site, with 13 active cases linked to it. The school was contacted for comment. Fleetwood Primary School, Fountain Gate Primary School and Hillsmeade Primary School in Narre Warren are all closed.

New data shows 14,940 South-Eastern Melbourne residents completed bowel cancer screenings, doubling the original target of 7000 set by Cancer Council Victoria. Cancer Council Victoria launched a project in 2019 to increase participation of South-East residents in the national bowel cancer screening program after only 42.8 per cent of people in the area completed free screenings. The project aimed to develop promotional strategies for general practices to encourage members of the community to participate in the bowel cancer screening program through information, resources and support. Head of Cancer Screening at Cancer Council Victoria Kate Broun said the results proved the importance of long term proj-
ects with material tailored for culturally diverse communities. “In addition to our mass media activities we were able to reach key multicultural groups through targeted education sessions about the importance of bowel screening, along with instructions and support on how to complete the bowel kit when it arrived in the mail,” Ms Broun said. “Almost all respondents of those surveyed as part of the project evaluation reported that their understanding and awareness of bowel cancer screening had increased as a result of the education session they attended, and that they felt more confident to complete their bowel screening kit.” Cancer Council Victoria worked in partnership Professor of Primary Cancer Research Jon Emery from the University of Melbourne to engage with general practitioners and health professionals. “GPs play a key role in lifting screening
participation rates, whether it’s through encouraging patients to do the home-test; explaining what is involved in the test; dispelling myths or sending letters or text messages to patients who are about to receive the test,” Professor Emery said. “GPs are well-trusted sources of health information in our multicultural communities, they are integral to the success of this campaign and the National Bowel Cancer Screening Program.” New data from the Cancer Council Victoria’s Cancer Registry shows a 17 per cent decrease of bowel cancer incidence during the first nine months of 2020 when compared to the same period in 2019. Telstra tower for Toomuc By Gabriella Payne Plans for a Telstra tower at Pakenham’s Toomuc Reserve are making headway, after councillors agreed to allow the project to move forward at the most recent council meeting. At the Cardinia Shire Council’s meeting on Monday 18 October, the “proposal to lease land to Telstra for Telecommunication Facility“ (item 6.1.6 on the agenda) was discussed by numerous councillors and ultimately given the green light to go ahead. The proposal, which plans to see the northeast corner of Toomuc Reserve land leased to Telstra for the “erection of a telecommuni-
cation facility“, was endorsed by numerous councillors, who said it would be beneficial for the community in more ways than one. Councillor Stephanie Davies said that it was “absolutely essential“ for quality telecommunications services to be built in the area in this increasingly digital age. Councillor Collin Ross agreed with Cr Davies, stating that projects like this were “one of the bonuses of being in a growth corridor“. “Phone towers often get requested, but the bonus of this one being on council land as compared to being on private land is that the council actually gets that bonus - and in most cases, it goes back to the reserve committee for maintenance,“ Cr Ross said.
But it seems not everyone in the community is on board with the plan. Councillors discussed that of the six public submissions received in regards to the proposal, only three were in support of the idea and various concerns had been raised by locals. These concerns included the physical appearance of the tower, the potential health impacts from “radiation“ and a question was raised as to where Telstra’s rental fees would be invested. Cr Davies said that these concerns had all been addressed, as the tower posed “no adverse health impacts“ and it would be “painted in a colour to help it blend in with its sur-
roundings“ - a first time occurrence for a Telstra tower. As to the investment of rental fees, Councillor Jack Kowarzik assured residents that “the funds from the Telstra rental will be invested into the reserve each year“ and would go towards helping with maintenance and local sporting clubs. The land will be rented to Telstra for $20,000 per annum (plus GST, plus 3 percent annual increase) and will be leased to the telecommunications company for a 10 year period (with the option to renew the deal for two further terms of five years). Sensory needs covered By Danielle Kutchel A Berwick business with inclusion at its heart is making it easier for families to find the sensory tools and toys their kids need. Sensory Poodle opened at the beginning of 2021 and was founded by Caitlin and Vicki, the parent and grandparent of two autistic kids. Caitlin said she had struggled in the past to find sensory toys for her son locally. “He was a chewer, but there was nothing around,” she said. “I had to buy him a dog chew at one point. When you need something like that, you need it now.” When her son started school last year, she realised just how many other children and families there were in the same situation. Sensory Poodle opened online in Febru-
ary and caters to special needs and gifted children. It also supplies sensory equipment to schools. So far, it’s received positive feedback from local parents. “A lot of special needs kids are not coping during lockdown and need support, and we’ve been able to provide that,” Caitlin explained. “I hope we’ve filled some sort of local gap.” Caitlin also recommended that families find a support system to help them through the pandemic and beyond with any challenges they might face in raising special needs children. Food forum The Cardinia Community Food Forum will be held online on Tuesday 9 November and will include a range of guests, speakers and panel discussions. The annual forum is organised by Cardinia Food Circles, a collective impact project that includes a whole-of-community focus on our food region involving schools, farms, businesses, organisations, residents and government. A lotto reasons to vax up By Gabriella Payne Victorians have rolled up their sleeves in droves recently for the Covid-19 vaccine and as one local resident knows, it certainly pays to get the jab! Like many others, young Narre Warren local Stephanie was eager to get vaccinated and do her bit for the community and when she heard about the new nation-wide vaccine lottery, the ‘Million Dollar Vax Campaign’, she thought she may as well enter. “I saw the ad on TV [for the Million Dollar Vax Campaign] and I thought, why not? It can’t hurt to pop my details in,” Stephanie said, who had already received both her jabs. “I thought there’s no way I’ll ever win... but then I got an email saying that I’d won a $1,000 gift card and I couldn’t believe it!” As part of the Million Dollar Vax Campaign, one hundred $1,000 gift cards (like the one Stephanie won) are being drawn daily throughout October (totalling 3,100 gift cards all up) and the major prize - the million dollar cash incentive - will be drawn at the end of the promotion, on November 5. Any Australian aged 18 years or over who receives at least one Covid-19 vaccination shot on or before October 31, 2021 is eligible to enter the competition and to be eligible to re-

Casey Garden Expo cancelled for 2021 By Parker McKenzie The Casey Garden Expo has been officially cancelled for 2021. The Expo is held at the Wilson Botanical Park in Berwick and features an annual spring native plant sale.
City of Casey events officer Timothy O’Beirne said he hopes the Expo would run next year. “Unfortunately the Garden Expo team came together a few weeks ago and decided it was too risky to run given the current environment at the time.” he said.
The Garden expo is held in partnership with the Australian Plants Society Native Plants Sale and Friends of the Botanical Gardens Berwick. The event was set to take place on 7 November 2021 after initially being postponed due to Covid-19 restrictions.

It was the initiative that dished up smiles during lockdown, but now a decrepit looking Spoonville site in Pakenham is providing anything but joy. During the one hour exercise limit - which is now a distant memory - Spoonville sites across Cardinia Shire were the most popular place to visit. Despite the fad having died down entirely, the Cardinia Lakes community was understandably upset at news their local site appeared to have been targeted by cruel vandals. Estate resident Laksika noticed the destroyed site during her daily walk on Sunday 24 January. “I think someone has just walked over it or kicked them all over. It’s very sad to see it. We always used to stop there and have a look for new ones,” she wrote on Facebook. The reaction from her neighbours was similar. “Absolutely disgusting. The highlight of our walk is our toddler stopping to look and admire the spoons,” one local woman said. “That’s so disappointing. My kids had spoons in there,” another woman added. Pakenham Hills Ward councillor Jack Kowarzik said the news was “really frustrating”. “Spoonville was created by locals for the enjoyment of local children and to see it vandalised is disappointing,” he said. Cardinia Art Society president Jillian Ronald described Spoonville as an “amazing initiative” during Melbourne’s lengthy lockdown. “It’s given joy and positivity in some very dark times and I just think it’s really disappointing that, when the community put together a project to support each other during a difficult time, that someone would take the trouble to destroy it. They’d be better off going home to create a spoon and putting it with

The quirky saga soon made its way to Cardinia - after Australia’s first ever site was constructed up the highway in Longwarry. Within weeks, the site had spread to Pakenham, Officer, Garfield, Nar Nar Goon, Emerald and Beaconsfield.
Ms Ronald acknowledged the Spoonville craze had now hit a dead end. “They’re getting a little bit tired, so maybe it’s time for the spoons to come home,” she said. Ms Ronald, who commissioned the two local sites at Lakeside in Pakenham, encouraged community members to collect their spoons from their local sites. She added that in mid-February she’d look to clean up all remaining Spoonville’s and relocate any leftover spoons to an “undisclosed location”.

worked to pursue their potential as a team, with restrictions proving no barrier as they trained and provided support to one another online when they could not be together. The teams have been guided, mentored and coached by past St Paul’s students and Alumnae, Jemma Douglas and Bella Fraser, who have both previously experienced the thrill of competing at the nationals. In a year of challenge and through times of doubt about whether the competition would proceed, both coaches were present to boost spirits and inspire the girls to never give up. In a combined statement, Jemma and Bella said, “With what was such a challenging year for sport aerobics, we are unbelievably proud of our dedicated teams for producing such monumental results”. As the largest Sport Aerobic competition in Australia, School Aerobics is open to both primary and secondary students, proving to be an increasingly popular co-curricular activity over the years.

After months of hard work and dedication, two Sport Aerobics teams from St Paul’s Anglican Grammar School were this week declared national champions in their divisions in the School Aerobics National Championships. Both the St Paul’s Saintly Ladies (Open B Secondary Section) and St Paul’s Saintly Angels (Secondary Stage 1 - Open) qualified earlier this year to compete at the nationals after winning their divisions at the School Aerobics State Final held on-site at The Arena in Geelong. The national competition, normally held on the Gold Coast, was converted to an online event this year due to COVID-19 restrictions and qualifying teams submitted a filmed entry for judging. Both St Paul’s teams had their routines filmed in the school’s dance studio, before intending to film their final submission in front of a small live audience at the Arts Centre. Heroes of the South-East Two leaders in the South East have been selected as nominees for the 2022 Victoria Australian of the Year Awards. Human rights and refugee advocate Nyadol Nyoun, of Lynbrook, and Sikh Volunteers Australia co-founder Jaswinder Singh, of Hallam, are among 16 Victorian finalists. Born in a refugee camp, Ms Nyoun, 33, has been a powerful voice for human rights, multiculturalism, refugees and people seeking asylum. She is among four finalists for the Victoria Australian of the Year. Her family, having fled the Sudanese Civil War, arrived in Melbourne in 2005. Since then, Ms Nyoun graduated in law at the University of Melbourne and has become a lawyer, writer, speaker, volunteer and motherof-two. She has spoken out on race and human rights issues, including media coverage targeting African gangs and Covid-19 law-breakers. As a result, she was subjected to racist online harassment and abuse. Ms Nyoun is an Advisory Committee member of the Andrew & Renata Kaldor Centre for International Refugee Law. She also chairs Harmony Alliance – an Australian migrant and refugee women’s coalition that empowers migrant women, including improving their digital literacy. She has been recognised with the Harmony Alliance Award, the Afro-Australian Student Organisation‘s Unsung Hero Award and as cowinner of the Tim McCoy Prize. Other Victoria Australian of the Year nominees are paralympian Dylan Alcott, CSIRO chief scientist Professor Bronwyn Fox and domestic violence survivor/advocate Kimbarlie O’Reilly. Mr Singh, 37, has been nominated for the Victoria Local Hero category for his work as

It has come to the fore during the Victorian bushfires in 2020, the Covid-19 pandemic and recent flooding in Victoria and NSW.
By the end of 2020, SVA delivered more than 140,000 meals to people-in-need during Covid lockdowns. Mr Singh has brought together and inspired individuals, communities and businesses to volunteer and donate to the cause. Other Victoria Local Hero nominees are Mallacoota SES volunteer Leo op den Brouw,
Brunswick West volunteer Phaik See (Cecilia) Chuah and musician/broadcaster Grant Hansen. The other two Victoria Australian of the Year Award categories are Victoria Young Australian of the Year and Victoria Senior Australian of the Year. Winners will be announced on 10 November. They will join other state and territory award recipients as national finalists. National Australia Day Council chief executive Karlie Brand said the Victorian nominees were “extraordinary people whose accomplishments are inspirational”. “They lead by example and make pathways for others. “They remind us that greatness comes in many forms and that we all have something to give.”

Halloween park at home By Cam Lucadou-Wells The horrors of lockdown have been turned into a home garden Halloween treat in Narre Warren North. Over months, Brooke McGowan-Grills has toiled on her macabre art park that sprawls across the Fontaine Terrace front yard. A playground/graveyard, a haunted dollhouse, a lit-up spider, witches, giant pumpkins, gnomes and a skeleton cooking on a barbecue are among the head-turning attractions. She has been inspired by her childhood passion for the Goosebumps series, as well as the need to give neighbours a “pick up”. “It gave me something to focus on rather than wondering what to do.
“I watched the old movies and the series, and just got carried away.” A visual-arts graduate, Ms McGowan-Grills has made good use of everyday materials. Making a witch out of trash bags and a tomato-growing cage, or a fence out of an old cot. “People love it. I get lots of people do really slow drive-bys – they drive here because they see it online. “I let the kids run amongst it. I made it to be enjoyed.” On Halloween, Ms McGowan-Grills will don a costume, face-paint and hand out lolly-bags for trick-or-treaters from her Goosebumps park. “I might have to make a few extra this year.”

What has been your most memorable moment? My most memorable moment would be my Europe trip of 2017. It was a very special trip where my whole family and I travelled 5 countries in the span of 14 days before coming to a stop in Germany for the remaining 14 days. Who is your biggest inspiration? There are many people who inspire me every day and for many reasons. But my biggest inspirations are my parents. They are the strongest and most loving people I know and if I could be half of what they are today, I would be a very happy person. I am proud to call them my parents. What were you like at school? I was a bright student who always sat in the front of the class and was eager to learn. I always loved my science and biology classes. I then went on to become School Captain in year 12. If you were Prime Minister for a day, what would be the first thing you would do? Change the mental health system so that people didn’t have to go into an emergency crisis before being seen by a psychiatrist and make it more affordable as it should be an essential service available to everyone.
Meet Benazir! What is your favourite holiday destination? I can’t pick between Venice and Dubai. Venice was a dream and Dubai was a blast. What are you most looking forward to when lockdown ends? My weekly brunches and gym. What does your role at Bakhtar involve? My role is the Youth Coordinator and involves advocating for our youth in the community.

Our ‘Patto’ calls time By Nick Creely After a sublime and entertaining career as an Australian Test cricketer, Dandenong favourite son James Pattinson has called time on his international career. The right-arm pace bowling dynamo, who plays with an immense passion that has adhered himself to fans across the globe, played 21 Test matches, 15 ODIs and four Twenty20s for Australia, taking exactly 100 international wickets along the way. Although hampered by injuries for the majority of his career, the 31-yearold originally from Doveton, and came through the Dandenong Cricket Club where he’s still a beloved mate and player, gave everything in the Baggy Green when given the opportunity. But now the paceman will continue plying his trade for Victoria when he overcomes his latest injury, while for fans of Premier Cricket, the Dandenong Cricket Club will be hoping to see more of its favourite son moving forward. James – alongside his older brother Darren – has an extensive history with the Panthers out of Shepley Oval. He debuted for the club in 2006/07, made his Victorian debut in 2008, before he made his Test debut against New Zealand in 2011, where he burst onto the scene with 5/27 and man of the match honours. Cricket Victoria CEO Nick Cummins, congratulated Pattinson on his achievements for Australia in what has been a fascinating journey. “James continues to be a fantastic ambassador for Australian and Victorian cricket and we congratulate him on a fine career at international level,” Cummins said. “Throughout his career, he has consistently challenged the very best batters in the world. “James’ journey has included injury hurdles and setbacks, which he has shown the determination to fight his way back from. He always took great pride in representing his country and was the ultimate competitor every time he stepped on the field for Australia.”
Outer East lock in By Nick Creely The Outer East Football Netball League has finalised its competitions divisional structure for season 2022, with a number of changes to take place across the divisions. Following the recent departures of the Beaconsfield Football Club (to Eastern), Cranbourne Football Club and Doveton Football Netball Club (both to Southern), the Outer East commission confirmed 26 clubs will be onboard with the league into the new year, with three divisions to be played. After heavy consultation with clubs via surveys, meetings and one-on-one consultations, the league has settled on its structure which will ensure minimal disruption would occur moving forward. In the Premier Division, there will once again be nine football clubs, while Division One and Two will see seven football clubs in each competition. While clubs were given three options under the three-divisional model, clubs voted for the 9,7,7 model for season 2022, with an 8,8,7 and 8,7,8 model under consideration. Monbulk, Mount Evelyn and Officer/ROC have been promoted from Division One to Premier, while Yarra Glen will take the step up to Division One which is set to realign the club with some local rivalries. The finals will be a three-week top four system and while it seems like a longer year, each club will play just 18 home and away games which is the same as we did a couple of years ago when we had a ten-team competition.” Outer East is still finalising with clubs in the coming weeks the 2022 season starting dates, but are aiming to start as soon as possible in April of next year, given the amount of football and netball lost to lockdowns. The senior competition fixtures for the new year will be released in early December following club feedback and requests. Region general manager Aaron Bailey said it was a pleasing situation to settle the competition heading into next year, reiterating that it will provide clear stability moving forward. “I’d like to thank all our senior clubs for their honesty, understanding and input into this process,” Bailey said. “The Covid-19 situation has affected our whole community in so many ways, so making the required adjustments now and settling as much as possible for the future was a common sentiment amongst our clubs during our consultation with them.”
Molino follows proven Storm pathway to the Hawks By David Nagel The enviable reputation of Gippsland Storm for developing exciting young netball talent continues to grow stronger with gun defender Eliza Molino signing with Victorian Netball League (VNL) club The Hawks. Molino, 15, from Pakenham, is the latest player to enjoy the fruits of the exciting pathway being created between the Gippsland Storm Elite Development Netball Club and its sister club – The Hawks. Just recently, Keeley Burgmann was announced as an Australian Squad member in the 17-Under age bracket after currently working her way through the Storm/Hawks system. Molino is also showing outstanding promise and will can look forward to some exciting times ahead after signing with the Hawks in their 19-under program under new coach Sophie O’Shea. Molino began playing netball in 2013 as a seven-year-old after begging her mum to let her play netball with her friends from school. She played with a school team for two seasons before moving to Pakenham Lions Netball Club in 2014 where she played in their stadium teams. In 2017 she was selected as an 11-year-old in the Pakenham Lions Netball Club 13-under team playing Saturday competition in the South East Football Netball League (SEFNL). At that stage the most exciting part for Eliza pakenhamnews.starcommunity.com.au
was that she got to wear a ‘netball dress’…but her development since has been outstanding. Her progress in 2017 led to her being selected in the School Sports Victoria (SSV) under-12 team. This gave her the opportunity to travel to Darwin in 2018 and compete against the other states in the School Sports Australia (SSA) National Tournament. In 2018 Eliza also started her journey with Gippsland Storm, being selected in the 13-under development team. During this year she was also given the opportunity to train and occasionally play with the Storm’s 13-under one squad. Her time at Storm has seen Eliza develop quickly and realise some fantastic achievements in 2021. She was selected in the SSV 15-under state team and the Netball Victoria Talent Academy Program and she was also selected in the Next Generation Program at Hawks Netball VNL. Just recently Eliza received the fantastic news that she has been signed to the 19-under squad at Hawks. Head coach for Gippsland Storm Simon O’Shanassy believes there is on end to what Eliza can achieve. “Eliza has a great work ethic to go with some natural talent and we look forward to seeing her continued development over the coming years,” O’Shanassy said. “It’s a great time for our club with our annual tryouts coming up and it’s exciting to see the

Eagles get accepted in Southern By Nick Creely The Southern Football Netball League has officially welcomed Cranbourne into the competition in 2022, after the Eagles and Outer East parted ways earlier this month. The Eagles - alongside Doveton - have departed the competition officially, with both clubs set to significantly bolster the Southern league. As first reported by the Gazette on 8 October, the Eagles will be looking to join Division 1 of the Southern Football Netball League next season, where it’s expected it will be a strong side under re-signed coach Steve O’Brien. In a statement, the Eagles said it was looking forward to the next chapter of their journey and beginning to establish new rivalries. “We have found the management and board of the SFNL to be fantastic to work with; professional, proactive and decisive in their style and for this we are very excited to join this wonderful league, expressing our desire to a long-term commitment,” the statement read. “The Cranbourne Netball Club will field four senior teams in the SFNL and keep their juniors affiliated with AFLOE. We will continue to work with the netball club as they learn to adapt to a different life as well; one which we hope they grasp and enjoy as much as we will. “As a football club, our travels have been up many different paths in our 132 years; from being a founding member of the Berwick and District FA, inaugural member of the South West Gippsland FL as well as an affiliated club of the Mornington Peninsula Nepean FL, Casey-Cardinia FNL, South East FNL and AFL Outer East FNL. From these travels we have come across many different clubs, formed many different rivalries and made plenty of friends….and some enemies. “These different rivalries are historic and while they offer us great memories of the past, it is now the memories of the future we now look forward to making; to be able to forge great rivalries with different clubs, in a different league, in a new era.” After announcing an impressive bundle of re-signings, such as Jordan Bertrand, Michael Boland, Jake Carosella, Nick Russo, Max Gearon, and skipper Brandon Osborne, the Eagles have signed ex-Melbourne defender Mitch White. White - after playing four AFL games - has been at the Casey Demons since 2018 after his AFL career came to a close, and has been captain of the VFL side since 2019, where he made Team of the Year that season and has remained one of the state-league’s biggest stars. While White still remains a vital part of the Demons’ VFL side, where he is expected to remain captain in 2022, he’s expected to feature for the Eagles at stages next season.

Richie rocking on By David Nagel Long-time Pakenham trainer Dianne Clover continues to have success with her small team after Little Richie Turf scored a strong and courageous victory at Yarra Valley on Saturday. The Turffontein/Miss Marriott five-yearold gelding secured his fourth win from 25 starts after holding on late for a length win in the $25,000 0-58 Handicap (1500m). Jockey Will Gordon took a positive approach to drawing the outside gate, revving up Little Richie Turf shortly after the jump and camping just outside the lead. Despite being used up early, Gordon put the foot down at the top of the straight with Little Richie Turf responding well, kicking clear in the straight before holding off a strong challenge from the well-fancied Elvaric. Little Richie Turf scored a similarly strong win at Geelong in May but had lost form since that run, with five unplaced finishes in his subsequent outings. Clover, who has trained at Pakenham, and now Tynong, since gaining her trainer’s licence

We’ve given him some
recent schooling and he appears switched on now…it’s great to have Richie back.” Little Richie Turf has proved quite the character throughout his career, and a testing one at that. “He’s tested just about every rider that has ever ridden him,” Clover explained. “It got to the stage where a jockey would have one ride on him and get off, and that happened on numerous occasions. But he’s a happy horse now and when they’re happy they try to the best of their ability.” Cover said Little Richie Turf’s peculiar mannerisms had earned him quite a reputation at the training track. “He’s known as the king of the pool because he does some quite unusual things like pigrooting in the water and he even tries to climb the walls,” Clover said. “He’s got quite a fan-following and I’ve seen quite a few comments that have said it’s great to have Richie back.” Little Richie Turf has been a good earner for the Clover yard, now earning more than $75,000 in prizemoney.
Incentivise on track for legend status
Incentivise will look to become just the second Pakenham-trained horse to win Australia’s most prestigious horse race – The Melbourne Cup – after putting together a perfect record since joining the Peter Moody camp in early July this year. With three Group-1s under their belt, including the Makybe Diva Stakes, Turnbull Stakes and Caulfield Cup, Incentivise and Moody will look to build on a proud history in the great two-miler for Pakenham locals when they head to Flemington next Tuesday.
