A Pakenham teenager is using music as a vehicle to promote positive messages about mental health.

Mikayla Wade, a 15-year-old student at Kooweerup Secondary College, has always been a talented musician; she can play the saxophone, piano and guitar.

But during last year’s lockdown she began turning her hand to songwriting too after her own mental health challenges.

Mikayla said while lockdown was “pretty difficult”, she was able to get through by focusing on the good.

Lockdown gave Mikayla the time to figure out what she really wanted to do, and she has since penned a full album’s worth of material.

Some of the songs are based on her own personal experiences while others draw from the perspective of loved ones or people in the community.

“I feel like songwriting really helps me to just be who I want to be,” she explained.

Friends and teachers have told her that her music sends a positive message around staying strong and triumphing over challenges.

“I’ve had a few issues in the past and conquered them,” Mikayla said.

“With lockdown different [issues] have come back but I’ve always gotten over them so I’m trying to write about that.”

It’s not the first time Mikayla has volunteered her skills to assist with good mental health.

In grade six, she volunteered to sew teddy bears for underprivileged kids.

It’s clearly a cause that’s close to her heart.

She’s now concentrating on putting together her first album of original pieces, recorded in her home studio, and gearing up for a public gig.

The teenager will be performing as part of Winter Originals at Bunjil Place on Friday 16 July – her first major performance of original songs.

By Gabriella Payne Firefighters often find themselves in highstress situations, working hard to save properties and lives in dangerous situations - and to prepare for this, it’s always good to practice.

The Upper Beaconsfield Fire Brigade decided to do just that last Wednesday 7 July on a mass scale, bringing together the Cockatoo Rural Fire Brigade, the Pakenham Brigade, Pakenham Upper CFA, Officer Fire Brigade, Toomuc Fire Brigade and the Beaconsfield Brigade in an expansive training exercise that aimed to hone their skills in an emergency situation.

Ian Pinney, the captain of the Upper Beaconsfield Fire Brigade who organised the whole event, said that it had been a very successful evening and a great way to bring a range of fire brigades in the Cardinia area together to work with one another.

“I thought it was a good exercise and a great opportunity to work in a collaborative approach with the other brigades,” Mr Pinney said.

“I prepared the whole night as a live incident, so not many people knew what was going on apart from a close few.”

Mr Pinney said that firefighters on the night were sent a message about the ‘fire’, which they then had to react to, organising and delegating tasks between one another to perform at their

best and successfully save the ‘people’ (dummies) inside the smoke-filled Igloo building in the Upper Beaconsfield Recreation Reserve.

The thick smoke in the Igloo building simulated a structure fire environment that allowed the firefighters to perform search and rescue functions with specialist breathing apparatus to help locate the missing casualties (dummies), that were then triaged by members with first aid training outside.

Mr Pinney said that over 65 firefighters from seven different brigades were present on the night, and the Cardinia firefighters were also joined by four members of the Edithvale Fire Brigade, who brought along and showcased their newly refurbished Mobile Communications Vehicle (MCV) - one of only two if its kind in Victoria.

The bi-annual training event went down without a hitch, and Mr Pinney said that it had been a fantastic learning opportunity for everyone involved, with even some new recruits getting involved.

“The message is that it’s important that we do these things because it provides us with invaluable training opportunities,” Mr Pinney said.

“They prepare us for large scale events when they do occur and they allow us to do it without the level of intensity that you would find in a real environment.”

Pakenham property boom

By Shelby Brooks Although it’s nothing new to hear Pakenham is experiencing a housing boom, house prices have soared post-Covid-19, surprising real estate agents.

Ray White Pakenham senior sales consultant Gavin Staindl said Pakenham home prices have gone up by around $60,000 in the last 12 months, something forecasters weren’t expecting.

“From a property perspective, the analysts were forecasting significant drops in the market, saying 40 per cent could be wiped off the property market,” Mr Staindl said.

“Yet here we are, 12 months on and it’s actually one of the hottest markets I’ve ever experienced.”

Average property prices in Pakenham have increased from $515,750 to $577,250 in the last 12 months.

Officer increased from $565,000 to $640,000.

“Both towns have gone up considerable amounts, over 10 per cent, which is incredible growth in any market,” Mr Staindl said.

Mr Staindl said the price rise could be attributed to the increase in interest in buying a home in the area.

“When we came out of lockdown we were inundated with people wanting to buy and I didn’t really understand why this was happening,” he said.

“People were just coming out of the woodwork.

“All of a sudden, my colleagues and I, we were looking at each other going hang on, this isn’t all doom and gloom, we aren’t going backwards, all of a sudden prices are starting to take off.”

Mr Staindl said a good indication of how many people were looking to buy is to look at pre-approval levels.

“The pre-approval levels that we have got is greater than that of 2009 when we experienced a rejuvenated turn around post global financial crisis (GFC),” he said.

“Interest rates are also low as they’ve ever

been in the history of interest rates, like in 100 years. So a lot of first home buyers are thinking, if I’m going to buy a house, I might as well do it now when I can get a loan at 1.9 per cent.

“These are crazy low numbers so the appeal to buy a property is significant.”

With travel plans on hold due to the global pandemic, people are saving more and can therefore afford a more expensive home, Mr Staindl said.

“Because people can’t really go anywhere, people are saving more. Travelling and weddings are all been put off so all of a sudden people have got a sizeable chunk of money and are thinking ‘what are we going to do with it? Oh I’ll go buy a house!’” Mr Staindl said.

While the growth in the market isn’t exclusive to the Cardinia area, Pakenham and Officer continue to be a popular choice for first home buyers.

“Remarkably, and this sounds crazy, it’s actually still quite affordable here compared to Rowville, Ringwood and Wantirna- places a little closer to the city,” he said.

“Here we’ve got great schools, good public transport, a proximity to the city under an hour and a thriving population boom.”

While about 50 per cent of buyers in Pakenham and Officer are first home buyers, Mr Staindl predicted around 20 per cent to be investors and 30 per cent to be second home buyers either upgrading or downsizing.

Though Mr Staindl pointed out, there are a lot of people leaving the area to make way for the new home buyers.

“A large majority of people are actually moving out altogether to Queensland or rural Victoria,” he said.

“There’s a mass migration or mass exodus taking place.

“That’s also allowing a lot of first home owners to cash in and move into those properties.”

Drouin, Warragul and Korumburra are popular regional destinations.

“It’s a lot of families moving on saying stuff it we’re going to move on with our kids and go somewhere else,” Mr Staindl said.

The club hopes to reduce the number of concussions and knee injuries in their players over the coming years.

Helping prevent injury

By Gabriella Payne The players, parents, coaches and trainers from the Officer Junior Football Club under 16 girls team were thrilled to take part in an informative injury prevention workshop recently, as part of a new grassroots research project run by La Trobe University.

The world-first project will be taking a closer look at the rates of concussion and knee injuries in over 3,000 women and girls playing Australian football across Victoria, in the hopes of preventing these kinds of injuries and their long-term effects into the future.

The Officer under 16 girls team were delighted to welcome the project coordinator, Dr Brooke Patterson, an ex-AFLW player and current AFLW development coach, to their home grounds last week, as they delved into some of the best training practices to ensure they stayed as fit and strong as possible.

The president of the Officer Junior Footy club, Shayne Honey, said that it had been a fantastic learning opportunity for everyone involved and it was great to be focusing on their players health and performance as a top priority.

“We jumped at the opportunity to participate in the program as a club with a development first focus,” Mr Honey said.

“The players have noticed the improvement in getting their bodies ready for the next game. The program also adds value to our current work in injury prevention as part of the Monash Health Healthy Sports Clubs program,” he said.

It was a great night for everyone, and the players learnt a lot from ex-AFLW star Brooke Patterson.

“It’s great as a junior club to be leading the way in how we look after our players.”

Under 16 player Haylee Mortimer said that the workshop had been a great experience for everyone as they swung back into footy after last year’s long hiatus.

“Being part of the program is beneficial for strength and conditioning for our bodies, and education pre and post game,” Ms Mortimer said.

“It’s also assisted our team bonding with a

structured warm up routine so we are switched on and game ready.”

Compared to other elite female ball sports, concussion and knee injuries continue to occur at a higher rate in the AFLW than any other sport across Australia - and Dr Patterson said that by conducting workshops like this on a grassroots level, they hoped to see a big change in the years to come.

“The time is now - we need to ensure more women and girls can continue to play the

game they love, and protect their long-term physical and mental health,” Dr Patterson said.

“The boom in women’s community football means teaching players spatial awareness, coordination, technical and contact skills is crucial.

“The extended time away from sport in 2020 and 2021 also means strategies to best prepare players have become even more vital,” she said.

A new leadership team for the town

By Gabriella Payne The Pakenham Fire Brigade is excited to welcome a few fresh and a few familiar faces to the helm, after a successful leadership changeover saw the new Brigade Management Team (BMT) come into office on Thursday 1 July.

Despite a difficult past 12 months, the new leadership team, headed by Captain Michael Corzelius, are excited to step into their roles and continue giving back to the local community.

The new leadership team were chosen by their fellow members, who voted at the biannual election at the brigade’s April meeting, and are now getting settled into their new positions.

Mr Corzelius said that the change in leadership provided the station with “a bit of fresh air” and each member of the new BMT was looking forward to working closely with the community.

“I’m very confident about the new leadership team that we’ve currently got; it’s been a long 12 months and a bit of a change is always good for the brigade and the community,” Mr Corzelius said.

“We always strive to do our best for the community and I think the team we’ve got are all well and truly community based, and we’re trying to do our best and achieve what we can with what we’ve had to deal with in the past 12 months.”

Lead by Mr Corzelius, the new team consists of First Lieutenant Chris Poulton, Second Lieutenant Phil Craig, Third Lieutenant Chris Fry, Fourth Lieutenant Matt Emmerson, Secretary Jeanette Craig, Treasurer Sue Mongelli, Community Safety Brijal Parikh and Occupational Health and Safety, Brendan Brown.

The brigade also recognised the outstanding work of some of their outgoing BMT members, including Brent Pettigrew, Rebecca Deliseo, Steve Leithhead and Greg Overdyk.

Second Lieutenant Phil Craig said that the brigade was always looking for more volunteers to join up, and he encouraged everyone

First principal A principal has been appointed for the upcoming specialist school in Endeavour Hills.

Susan Coull has more than 30 years of experience in working with children with disabilities. She has led three specialist schools, most recently as principal at the Currajong School in Malvern East.

Ms Coull has a Master’s degree in special education, and trained as a music therapist.

Dandenong MP Gabrielle Williams said Ms Coull’s appointment ensured a “great leader for a a fantastic new school that will meet the additional needs of students with disabilities in the area”.

Narre Warren North MP Luke Donnellan said the Government was ensuring “students of all abilities can access a great education – no matter their circumstances”.

The Australian public school sector is shamefully underfunded.

The Australian private school sector is vastly overfunded.

Solution? Defund the private school sector and adequately fund the public school sector.

Public schools in Australia are expected to operate in alarming conditions; shouldering limited teaching and learning resources, antiquated asbestos-ridden infrastructure and enrolments of disadvantaged students doubling that of schools in the private sector.

Despite the obvious disparities, private schools enjoy an overabundance of government funding and financial support.

Not only do they receive tremendous government funding, but also fees raised from parents and financiers; a luxury public schools do not enjoy.

Fees in public schools are often recounted as voluntary contributions. This is because government legislation forbids public schools attaching mandatory parental fees to student enrolments.

Irrespective of the differences, senior government politicians and bureaucrats expect public schools to deliver a quality teaching and learning program.

They want Australian schools to be world-leading, yet deprive public schools of the funding they so urgently need.

Adjunct associate professor at Southern Cross University David Zyngier believes removing all funding from any school that “... charges fees above its SRS then progressively removing funding from those schools charg-

In a recent research paper written by Trevor Cobbold and published by Save Our Schools in June 2021, this underfunding is expected to continue for “...the rest of the decade under the current Commonwealth and State Government funding arrangements.”

By the end of the decade, public schools will be underfunded by a gargantuan $60 billion while private schools will be overfunded by $6 billion.

This is an outrageous prospect and one that should be taken far more seriously by the Commonwealth Government and its Department of Education.

Underfunded public schools with smaller budgets, larger class sizes and fragmented teaching and learning programs see lower student achievement levels creating a so-

cioeconomic problem within the education sector.

Public education should form the framework and backbone of an equitable and egalitarian society, but there is a clear prejudice towards the public sector.

The symmetric shaming and blaming of public school teachers for the poor academic achievement levels of their students needs to stop.

It makes no more sense than praising private school teachers for the high academic achievement levels of their students.

There is no judicious or measurable difference between the two.

It’s about the environment they work in, the resources they have access to, and the funding the school has to support those who need it.

Action on Glismann lights

By Danielle Kutchel The long-awaited traffic signals at a busy Beaconsfield intersection have been turned on at last.

The lights at Glismann Road and Princes Highway were switched on on the afternoon of Thursday 8 July.

The big moment followed an earlier crash at the site, which occurred during the switchon process.

Two cars collided at the intersection at around 11.30am.

Ambulance Victoria confirmed that paramedics assessed three people at the scene.

One person was taken to the Alfred Hospital in a stable condition and a second person was taken to Casey Hospital, also in a stable condition.

The third person involved was not taken to hospital.

Two CFA units from Beaconsfield brigade also attended.

Speaking at the scene, First Constable Josh Durdin from Pakenham Police said while more investigations needed to take place, it ap-

Waste not, want not

By Gabriella Payne Each year in Australia, a huge amount of food that we buy ends up in the bin, and this is having a detrimental effect on our planet.

According to not-for-profit organisation OzHarvest, Australians waste 7.3 million tonnes of food annually, or “enough to fill 13,000 Olympic sized swimming pools” which in turn, produces harmful greenhouse gases that are directly contributing to climate change.

These shocking statistics are clearly a wake up call that something needs to change - but how can you and I do our bit to reduce food waste and help the planet?

Well, in a bid to combat this issue and reinvent the way we think about cooking, the Cardinia Shire Council are excited to launch a range of free, zero-waste cooking workshops for one and all to get involved in.

These environmentally-conscious classes will teach residents about the harmful impacts of food waste on the planet while simultane-

ously sharing a range of new recipes, tips and tricks that community members can put to use at home, in their own kitchens.

An experienced Open Table facilitator will be leading the classes, set to begin in August, and participants will learn how to save money on their grocery bills while reducing the amount of food they waste each year.

A fun, ‘no waste cooking demonstration’ will also be held to show some ingenious ways of using some of the foods that we most often throw away.

The first event is set to be held online on Monday 2 August between 7pm - 8pm, where participants will have the chance to cook along at home, while the second event will be held on the evening of Friday 6 August at the Pakenham Library and will showcase a unique ‘broccoli stem pesto’ recipe among others.

Spaces are limited and participants are required to register before the events, head to the Cardinia Shire Council website for more information.

The two free events will show participants ingenious ways of putting our food scraps to good use and wasting less in the kitchen.

Seniors getting a more tech savvy outlook

The modern technologies of the twenty-first century can be a little overwhelming to keep up with, especially for some of our senior residents, but the team at the Outlook Community Centre are working to change all that as they help seniors get tech savvy through a range of computer classes.

Having been running for almost 10 years now, the ‘Get Tech Savvy’ workshops have helped many older residents sharpen their digital skills over the years and have kicked off once again at the community centre and will be running each Wednesday morning right through to October.

The Outlook Community Centre manager, Alison Ryan, said that the classes had originally been started to help senior citizens gain more confidence with technology in a relaxed environment and after the last year and a half, the lockdowns had proven just how important these skills are in keeping our community members connected.

“The classes were originally started because there were seniors who weren’t confident enough to go into a more mainstream structured class and had a few questions they wanted to ask that popped up,” Ms Ryan explained.

“For example, one week they might want to know how to do something on their phone, so these classes provided them with that more informal, non-threatening space

Ms Ryan said that the classes had always proven quite popular, but they had seen the need grow even more in recent months, particularly in the forced Covid lockdowns.

“Especially now after Covid and lockdown, you have to do things online,” she said.

“Some people before weren’t as interested, but now they have no choice.”

Run by a number of volunteers, Ms Ryan said that each week the free classes covered a range of different technological subjects and catered to all students, whether they were beginners, intermediate or perhaps just wanted to ask a simple question.

“When they [the senior students] realise the possibilities, there’s a whole new world out there for them to discover.”

Classes will be running each week on Wednesdays between 9.30am - 12.30pm and students are able to use the centre’s laptops and iPads, or can bring their own devices for any questions they may have, big or small.

Teachers want jab next

By Shelby Brooks As teachers return for term three without masks, one local principal is advocating for his staff to be considered frontline workers in the Covid-19 vaccine rollout.

Berwick Lodge Primary School principal Henry Grossek believes teachers should be considered frontline workers and be eligible for a Pfizer vaccine if they wish.

“I know my staff would all feel better if they had the opportunity to be vaccinated,” he said.

“That’s been an ongoing concern for the last 15 months. Teachers at my school and colleagues that I speak to have always felt we should be prioritised for vaccination.”

He said the nature of a classroom setting should be enough to see teachers on the list.

“The bottom line is we work in small rooms with 20-30 kids in a classroom for five to six hours a day and you aren’t wearing masks in there and if someone has got it, and children can get it, as we know, it can just spread like wildfire,” Mr Grossek said.

Minister for Health Martin Foley announced on Wednesday 7 July that masks would no longer be required at schools for students and staff as restrictions eased in metropolitan Melbourne.

“A lot of the authorities are saying it’s low risk, but it still is a risk,” Mr Grossek said.

“It would make a lot of teachers feel a lot better if they were priority vaccinated and we should be now. Once again, we’ve got no cases so it’s a golden opportunity to capitalise on that.

“If we all got vaccinated we’d all feel better and we wouldn’t have to wait until some school got closed down again.”

Mr Grossek said teachers should have been on the list from the beginning of the rollout.

“We do know that in any point in time, as we’ve just seen in Sydney and a few months ago in Melbourne, things can change rapidly and the Delta strain, which is the one we are all concerned about, can flare up at a rapid rate very quickly.

“The fact that we haven’t got any cases at the moment doesn’t in any way, diminish people’s concerns. My opinion is, yes, teach-

ers should be getting priority vaccinations, of course that hasn’t been the case and it’s disappointing that it isn’t.”

On Facebook, the Gazette asked “Should teachers be considered frontline workers for the Covid-19 vaccine rollout?” to gauge the community’s opinion.

A few people said no, teachers should not be considered frontline workers in the Covid-19 vaccine rollout, with most saying it should be an individual’s choice.

The Gazette did not suggest that teachers should not be given a choice and instead just asked if teachers should be categorised as a frontline worker in the rollout scheme.

Kristina Dodevski said teachers shouldn’t be considered frontline workers.

“If teachers are, so are supermarket workers, and I’m in construction, and we didn’t stop during any of the lockdowns. Does that make all those industries frontline workers?” she said.

Emma Woodman also said no.

“Frontline workers are every single person that worked away from home through 2020.

Teachers hid safe and sound at home. Working behind a computer screen,” she said.

“The supermarket employees, the rubbish collectors, the early childhood staff, the hospital/aged care staff yes. Not the sooky teachers that campaigned their union to ‘protect’ them and neglected our children for the majority of the year.”

Lots of people did answer yes, saying that teachers should be listed as frontline workers in the vaccine rollout.

Bronwyn Mepstead said, “Absolutely, especially if they live with someone who is compromised.”

Matthew Carey was more pessimistic.

“Why bother considering it now? Should been mandated from the start,” he said.

Jacquie Venditti said, “absolutely, if they want it.”

Vebica Evoonz agreed to part of the idea.

“For the original Covid variants no, as the stats and science didn’t support it. But for Delta variant, yes, as it is more transmissible and may potentially harm more children if teachers give it to the students,” she said.

And so did Kym Daniels.

“If yes, then so should supermarket workers!” she said.

Climbing to great heights

By Gabriella Payne The sun was shining on Sunday 11 July as the Pakenham Cub Scouts laced up their shoes, topped up their water bottles and strapped on their backpacks as they set off on a mountaineering adventure in Garfield North.

The troop’s hike up Mount Cannibal signified not only a physical challenge for the young Cubs, but also gave them an opportunity to reflect on their own achievements over the challenging past 12 months, with two Cubs

receiving some very special recognition.

At the top of the mountain, Natasha Ramage and Lucas Algie were presented with their Grey Wolf Awards, in honour of all the hard work and commitment they had shown the Pakenham Cubs over the years.

This journey was memorable for more reasons than one, particularly for both Natasha and Lucas, who will be transitioning to the local Scout group in the near future.

Rachel Byron, the Cardinia Scouts district development leader, said that the hike had

been a wonderful bonding activity for the group and it was great to be able to get together and celebrate Natasha and Lucas’ achievements at the summit.

“Pakenham Scout Group Cub Section hiked Mt Cannibal on the weekend to present two youth members with their Grey Wolf Awards, the peak award for the Cub Scouts.

“Natasha Ramage and Lucas Algie worked hard throughout their time in Cubs, and especially during lockdown in 2020 to be able to achieve their peak award before linking up to

Scouts,” Ms Byron said.

“Congratulations to both youth members on this amazing achievement!”

Ms Byron said that in total, the young adventurers hiked a total distance of 4.1km or 5,067 steps - a mammoth achievement for the group, especially for some Cubs who had never taken on a challenge like this before.

All in all it was a wonderful, sunny day out - and the Cubs can’t wait to get back out to the mountain again soon.

You have to be yourself since if you do form a relationship with a customer, it is really important that they receive a consistent approach from you.

Item two might sound counter-intuitive, but if you think about it, it doesn’t matter how great your solutions are, if they don’t match (or don’t appear to match) your client’s real needs, they don’t stand a chance of getting up.

Asking real questions to understand their problem(s) will go a long way to gaining their interest and positioning you as someone genuinely interested in solving their problem(s).

There is a lot more to be said about sales systemization, but in essence you need a plan, a way to measure your progress against that plan and a way to ensure that you track, monitor and follow up on opportunities. It’s not so much a skill, more of a discipline but one that can be learned.

Many years ago, before I set up my own business, my Dad would sometimes ask me: “Ian, why don’t you set up your own business son?”

My response was always the same: 1. I believe you need at least a small customer base that you know you can sell something to and 2. I don’t believe I can sell a damn thing.

In my corporate roles I had held a variety of positions but never been directly involved in sales. And it was probably a good thing since my view back then of what constituted a good salesperson was well wide of the mark.

My view of selling was that you had to be a great people-person, outgoing and gregarious and able to dazzle prospective clients with the benefits of the products and services on offer.

Unfortunately, when I did eventually start my own business, my view of a great salesperson had not changed much and so I took on the role from the out-dated perspective that I had.

You can guess what happened - I had very little success and the initial clients that I did work with were those that already knew, liked and trusted me.

As it started to become increasingly obvious that my sales attempts were not working, I decided to take a different approach.

I decided I would not try to sell, instead I would simply listen to what the prospective client’s issue was and see if I could identify possible solutions for them, even if it meant referring them onto someone else. I also did something else. I started to record all real opportunities and track the progress since just making a mental note of following up was not cutting it and it was not unusual for me to forget to follow through.

The results were amazing and it was from that point that the business started to grow. Looking back, it is now clear what made the major

- Use the correct technique or ask for help when lifting heavy objects to avoid injury.

- Speak up if you are uncomfortable about something you have been asked to do: you’re allowed to say no to a task if you think it might be harmful to your health.

- Alert the relevant supervisor or manager on site and seek medical advice if you are injured or experience a workplace-related injury.

Workers in the industry need to consider the roles of food and nutrition, exercise, mental health care and exercising safety in the workplace to ensure a holistically healthy approach to work.

Sunday August 1 marks the beginning of Tradies National Health Month, and the Australian Physiotherapy Association (APA) is aiming to raise awareness about the health and injury risks involved in trade industries.

According to data from Safe Work Australia, the injury and illness incidence rate for trade workers is three times as high as any other occupation in the workforce. Tradies also have among the highest number of serious injury and illness claims in the country, with approximately 190 serious compensation claims made per day.

Tradies, along with their family, friends, employers and the wider community, are encouraged to take note of the increased chances of workplace-related incidents for workers in these industries. When a trade worker is injured on the job, it affects their family, business and community. Though they only make up a third of Australia’s workforce, almost 60 per cent of serious workplace injuries involve a tradie.

The APA are promoting Tradies National Health Month to highlight the daily risks tradies take when going to work. Former APA national president Phil Calvert is pushing for tradies to take their health more seriously and exercise all possible precautions on the work site.

“We need to get tradies to prioritise their health so that they can continue to play the important roles they hold in the workforce, their families and the community at large,” Mr Calvert said.

“Australians’ reliance on the work that tradies do is huge, so we need to encourage them to seek proper, evidence-based care be-

fore their small niggles become large issues that could potentially lead to time off work.”

An industry study has shown that construction workers are approximately 143 per cent more likely than other industries to retire due to disability. Further to this, tradies in the industry were found to have a higher prevalence of musculoskeletal abnormalities, hearing problems, signs of obstructive lung disease, increased body mass index and other chronic health conditions.

Tradies face daily hazards at work, where risks include working with dangerous tools and equipment, electricity, harmful substances, extreme height and noise, and heavy objects or machinery.

Though workplace-related musculoskeletal disorders have decreased by seven per cent between 2000-01 and 2011-2, the APA states that claims arising from diseases have risen by four per cent in the same period.

The state government recently announced that from 20 July, WorkSafe inspectors can issue on the spot fines to individuals or businesses who breach the state’s Occupational Health and Safety Act. This is an immediate alternative to prosecuting individuals or businesses who breach the act.

Fines ranging from $363.48 to $1817.40 can be issued for infringements such as working without proper registration, licenses, qualifications, experience or supervision. Incorrect removal or storage of asbestos is also a fineable offence.

The Minister for Workplace Safety, Ingrid Stitt MP, is confident that these new penalties will increase workplace safety in Victoria.

Invincible icon on stage

By Danielle Kutchel Hailed as the international Queen of ‘70s Pop, Helen Reddy was Australia’s very first truly international superstar.

In 1973, her iconic song I Am Woman became the unforgettable anthem of the women’s liberation movement and made her the first Australian to win a Grammy Award.

During her remarkable career she had three number one hits on the US Billboard charts and six more in the US top 10.

She sold more than 25 million albums and played to sold out concert houses right around the world.

She even hosted her very own prime time series on US television.

Then, all of a sudden, she lost it all.

While some of her story was brought to life in last year’s feature film, I Am Woman, the full tale remains a mystery to many – but now Australian singer and actor Nikki Bennett brings Helen Reddy’s life to Australian stages.

Invincible: The Helen Reddy Story will visit Bunjil Place on Sunday 18 July.

Nikki will take the starring role but will speak “about” Helen rather than as her, with Helen’s catalogue of music flowing throughout to help drive the story.

She said she wrote the show in 2010 after growing up with Helen’s music and career in her periphery.

After reading Helen’s biography, she found herself admiring the “unbelievable story of this struggling single mum in the ‘60s, a mum who became the second-highest selling female artist and wrote a feminist anthem, a trailblazing icon for women and Australian entertainers”.

Through song and theatre, Nikki explores not just Helen’s incredible overseas success, but the resentment she experienced back in Australia and the tragedies of her personal life.

“There’s this massive story of a powerful, iconic feminist who was crushed by people,” Nikki explained.

“It’s uplifting, but it also shows you don’t get anywhere without going through a lot of hardship, especially in those days,” she said.

The show’s performance comes off the back of one of the hardest times the performing arts industry has ever faced, after it was decimated during the Covid-19 pandemic.

Nikki said she used the lockdown to concentrate on getting the show together to bring it to life on stage.

Now ready to go, Nikki promised the audience would be on their feet singing by the end.

“I think people come in thinking they’ll know three or four songs, but then they know

“I look out at the end of the show and have this whole sea of women fist-pumping the air singing I Am Woman – it’s a powerful feeling.

“She was an iconic Australian and I think that’s a powerful thing for people, when they learn how amazing she was.”

It was the initiative that dished up smiles during lockdown, but now a decrepit looking Spoonville site in Pakenham is providing anything but joy.

During the one hour exercise limit - which is now a distant memory - Spoonville sites across Cardinia Shire were the most popular place to visit.

Despite the fad having died down entirely, the Cardinia Lakes community was understandably upset at news their local site appeared to have been targeted by cruel vandals.

Estate resident Laksika noticed the destroyed site during her daily walk on Sunday 24 January.

“I think someone has just walked over it or kicked them all over. It’s very sad to see it. We always used to stop there and have a look for new ones,” she wrote on Facebook.

The reaction from her neighbours was similar.

“Absolutely disgusting. The highlight of our walk is our toddler stopping to look and admire the spoons,” one local woman said.

“That’s so disappointing. My kids had spoons in there,” another woman added.

Pakenham Hills Ward councillor Jack Kowarzik said the news was “really frustrating”.

“Spoonville was created by locals for the enjoyment of local children and to see it vandalised is disappointing,” he said.

Cardinia Art Society president Jillian Ronald described Spoonville as an “amazing initiative” during Melbourne’s lengthy lockdown.

“It’s given joy and positivity in some very dark times and I just think it’s really disappointing that, when the community put together a project to support each other during a difficult time, that someone would take the trouble to destroy it. They’d be better off going home to create a spoon and putting it with

“I’d suggest there’s much better things they could do with their time.”

The ‘Spoonville’ trend was born out of Winnersh, England, in an attempt to improve mental health by simply making people happy as they were out and about during daily exercise.

The quirky saga soon made its way to Cardinia - after Australia’s first ever site was constructed up the highway in Longwarry.

Within weeks, the site had spread to Pakenham, Officer, Garfield, Nar Nar Goon, Emerald and Beaconsfield.

Ms Ronald acknowledged the Spoonville craze had now hit a dead end.

“They’re getting a little bit tired, so maybe it’s time for the spoons to come home,” she said.

Ms Ronald, who commissioned the two local sites at Lakeside in Pakenham, encouraged community members to collect their spoons from their local sites.

She added that in mid-February she’d look to clean up all remaining Spoonville’s and relocate any leftover spoons to an “undisclosed location”.

The once popular Spoonville trend appears to have hit a dead end.

A solid effort all around The first exhibition of the Berwick District Woodworkers Club was an outstanding success.

Club member John McMahon said an estimated 500-600 people attended over the weekend from 9-11 July to see demonstrations by club members as well as some of the amazing sculptures and functional pieces they’ve been working on.

As a result of the weekend, the club has also picked up a number of new members as well as positive feedback from people in the Casey community.

Visitors came from as far away as East Gippsland and Shepparton.

As a bonus, Mr McMahon said, the club made some good sales of its pieces too.

The Berwick District Woodworkers Club has existed for around 35 years but this was its first open exhibition.

And after the success of this first endeavour, Mr McMahon said it’s likely it won’t be the last.

“It will possibly be an annual event and probably will be bigger next time,” he said.

“We were more than happy with the response we had from the community and the reactions we got were that they were blown away.”

While visitors enjoyed all the demonstrations, he said the most popular were wood turning on the lathe and carving and making rocking horses.

The club is composed of both men and women of all ages and abilities and skill levels, from people who have never held a hammer to those who have worked with wood throughout their professional career.

Electric Eels on the rise

By David Nagel The next Cameron Smith, Billy Slater or Cameron Munster might be taking their first development steps right here in our local region at the Pakenham Eels Rugby League Club.

Established in 2016, the Eels are growing fantastically well with nine junior teams now participating in ages ranging from under-6 all the way through to under-16.

And the Eels might also have the next Ali Brigginshaw in their ranks too, with the club introducing an all-girls under-15 team for the very first time this season.

And the news keeps on getting better for the Eels, who will switch bases from their current home at the Cardinia Recreation Reserve to a flash new facility at Comely Banks in Officer next season Club president Jason Buchanan said the move to the Comely Banks Recreation Reserve - a regional sporting hub being built next to the new Bridgewood Primary School – would allow the club to continue to prosper.

Once fully developed, the reserve will have four rectangular pitches (for rugby league and touch football), extensive change room facilities, officials and first aid rooms and the capacity for hosting major events.

The Eels have a very culturally diverse participation base, and welcome local families to become involved in both rugby league and touch football for every age for the very first time.

Michael Winter, who has a child playing at the club, said rugby league provides so many benefits to the youngsters who play the game.

“The kids learn how to tackle, and how to be tackled, and how to protect themselves and the opposition, but the most important part is the respect they are learning from their coaches,” Winter explained.

“The dedication and discipline of the coaches and the families is something that I really think stands out.”

Youth Equine Academy teaches some great lessons Over the past two weeks MFC Equine has held its first Youth Equine Academy.

It was a five-day camp where children learned about the Three Circle Horsemanship training method and experienced exciting activities including cow cutting, team penning, obstacle courses and trail rides.

The kids had a blast to say the least.

They worked with their horses all day and sang and danced in the evening.

Mike Costello and the team at MFC Equine gave them a great learning experience, and with fantastic visits from the vet, and an equine masseuse, the fun was augmented with learning and bonding activities that will stay with them for a lifetime.

Fully catered for with healthy and nutritious home style cooking to keep them fueled up through the day, the children all left happy and a bit sad to be going home.

MFC can’t wait for the next school holidays to come around so it can do it all again!

Lions making their mark

The fourth-placed Lions were smarting after a surprising loss to Woori at home just prior to their bye, and played like a side on a mission.

While the Tigers desperately tried to keep pace in the opening quarter, Ash Green’s side broke the game apart with a dominant six goal second term to open up a 48 point lead.

With the likes of Josh Tynan (four goals), Liam Tyrrell, the returning Darcy Hope (three goals) and Zac Stewart all turning in eyecatching displays, the Lions played some of their best footy of the season.

They – similar to Olinda Ferny Creek – are a genuine dark horse this season, and have a way of making any side in the competition feel unsettled.

Ash Green said it was important that his side bounced back after a bitterly disappointing loss against Woori Yallock.

“We did a lot of soul-searching after the loss to Woori Yallock – we were in a position similar to Narre, and the pressure came and they knocked us over,” he said.

“We needed to rebound, we made a few changes – it was a tight first quarter contest, and after that our pressure acts went up.

“It was a really good win, and it was great to get a good spread of goal kickers as well.”

Mt Evelyn banked a massive win on the road against Officer, in another sign of the Rovers’ premiership credentials, 9.8 (62) to 6.16 (52).

The Rovers clinched their eighth win of the AFL Outer East Division 1 season in a finalslike occasion, something that will hold them in good stead for what’s to come.

Pakenham snares a special second win

By Tyler Lewis and Dave Nagel Pakenham secured its second win of the season and overtook its opponent Upwey Tecoma in a brilliant performance on Saturday.

The Lions have been scarce of victories this season, but Saturday’s win was special, coming as a win that steers the Pakenham outfit out of second last.

Pakenham led at every change on its way to the 46-40 victory.

Mia Washington was sensational, converting 19 goals.

Washington wasn’t alone, Chloe Morgan also had a terrific time on the court, she scored 20 goals as the pair combined for 39 of the Lions 46 goals.

The Lions have held up defensively all year, conceding just the sixth most goals across the competition, but it has been its attacking end that has been a reason for concern.

But Saturday was different, with Morgan and Washington paving the way for a potentially strong finish to the season.

In Division 1, ROC did as ROC do against Mount Evelyn, 69-26.

Frighteningly, Mount Evelyn are in fifth and are a terrific side, but this ROC outfit are simply too strong.

Dee Dee Deng is a scary prospect for opposition players; she scored another 31 goals and really looks like she is peaking at the right time.

In other matches, Monbulk Hawks put Emerald away, 61-27, while Berwick Springs fell to Gembrook Cockatoo 44-50.

The competition can sleep a little easier this week knowing ROC have the bye.

The Goon looked set for an easy afternoon at the office, booting the first two goals of the game, but goals to Darren Granger, Sage Tapner and Mason McGarrity had the Dusties holding a slight ascendency at quarter time.

The Dusties lead could have been greater with star forward Anthony Bruhn hooking two relatively easy set shots at goal early in the first term.

But you could tell the Dusties were up for the fight with fierce determination and strong tackling a feature of their first-quarter efforts.

Granger kicked four, and Bruhn three for the winners, while skipper Shane Brewster, ruckman Jackson Mockett and midfielder Will Gibson played huge roles in the victory.

Troy McDermott kicked five for the vanquished, while the classy left feet of Kyle O’Sullivan and Trent Noy kept the Goon in the hunt until the final minutes of play.

The Dusties suffered three-consecutive defeats back in rounds three, four and five – at the hands of Tooradin-Dalmore, Korumburra-Bena and Dalyston – but have since gone undefeated to launch themselves into fifth position on the ladder.

A draw with a red-hot Bunyip in round eight gave us an early indication that the Dusties could be a team that can cause an upset or two come finals time.
