A Cleary message By Gabriella Payne
“We know the last year has been particularly hard in terms of stress and anxiety which, unfortunately, can have a knock-on effect in family violence,” Cr Owen said. “Cardinia Shire has one of the highest reported incidents of family violence in Victoria - a heartbreaking statistic and one we are working hard to change through the collective efforts of the community-led Together We Can initiative. “Council’s acknowledgement and position on the issue of family violence is clear: silence is no longer acceptable, and we ask the whole community to build healthier and respectful relationships with one another so our current and future generations can thrive.
“Through events like these, we can improve men’s understanding of what constitutes family violence and how we can stand up, speak out and seek support when needed,” he said. The fundraising event will also include the announcement of the 2021 Garry McQuillan and Tony Fitzgerald Award recipients; which recognise men for their continued efforts in raising awareness and preventing men’s violence against women. Spaces at this year’s event are strictly limited due to Covid-19 restrictions and attendees are urged to reserve their space online. Head to the council website for more information. 12503606-JW28-21
The Cardinia Cultural Centre and Cardinia Shire Council are gearing up in anticipation of White Ribbon Day and this year, they’re excited to welcome a special guest speaker to help advocate for an end to family violence the White Ribbon Australia executive director, Phil Cleary. An AFL legend, former federal MP and passionate equality advocate who’s been touched by family violence himself, Mr Cleary is the perfect ambassador for White Ribbon Day and will be speaking at the fundraiser on the morning of Thursday 29 July. Mr Cleary has been at the forefront of the
campaign to end family violence ever since losing his sister Vicki 34 years ago, when she was sadly killed by her former partner. At the fundraiser in a few weeks time, Mr Cleary will share a bit of his story and talk to Cardinian residents about the role of community groups and businesses in putting a stop to domestic violence once and for all. In the past 12 months, the mandatory Covid-19 lockdowns have sadly seen cases of domestic violence continue to rise in the shire and the Cardinia Shire mayor Brett Owen acknowledged that it had been a challenging time for the local community - but the council were continuing to advocate for family violence prevention.
