New eye on crime By Shelby Brooks Following May’s vandalism attack, Pakenham’s Living Learning Centre will receive new CCTV cameras after being identified as one of the vital spots in Cardinia Shire in need of improved security. The centre’s community garden was destroyed overnight of Wednesday 26 May when a “group of youths” damaged the greenhouse and garden shed, police said at the time. Now, volunteers will feel more secure with the installation of new cameras that will be live fed to the Pakenham and Dandenong Police Stations. New CCTV cameras will also be installed at the Pakenham Library, while Bourke Park Pakenham and Kooweerup Outdoor Pool will receive upgraded CCTV cameras to further boost safety and security for the community. The cameras come as part of a $500,000 grant from the Victorian Government’s Community Crime Prevention Program which Cardinia Council successfully applied for. The $500,000 covers the installation and upgrade existing CCTV at the four sites, as well as the installation of electronic access control systems at 10 additional sites across the shire. Minister for crime prevention Natalie Hutchins visited the Living Learning Centre on Wednesday 16 June to make the announcement. “We should never underestimate the role of a Living Learning Centre like this, of a library, of all our public facilities which actually underpin the work that is being done to keep people safe,” Ms Hutchins said. “What I mean by that, those that have come into contact with the justice system as well as victims- having those spaces to go where they feel part of a community is a really important part of breaking down the barriers of poverty and isolation which are big factors which lead to issues of crime.” Cardinia Shire Mayor Brett Owen said the installation of the new CCTV and the electron-

Living Learning Centre chief executive Miriam Cadwallader said the cameras would make volunteers and visitors alike feel safer. “They are very very welcome,” she said. “We’ve been trying for a number of years and finally it’s happened. “It will make it so much safer for our community.”

locking it down,” Ms Cadwallader said. “It’s disheartening when volunteers put their soul into what they do and the stupidity of a few means their work is undone, it makes you feel, why bother?”
