Getting job ready By Mikayla Van Loon For those looking for work, about to enter into the employment market for the first time or are planning on starting a business, look no further, the Casey Cardinia Library in Pakenham is hosting a Jobs and Skills Expo on 16 March. The expo has been designed to offer advice and guidance on all things employment, from resume writing to local job trends. “Public libraries have a critical role supporting their communities as they recover from the disruption caused by Covid-19,” Casey Cardinia Libraries CEO, Chris Buckingham said. As of June last year, seven per cent of Cardinia Shire residents were unemployed, the highest rate of unemployment since September 2016. “Casey Cardinia Libraries are actively supporting people who are looking for work each and every day,” Mr Buckingham said. “This Expo is a terrific opportunity for
people considering new directions, entering the workforce for the first time, or looking to return to work.” Interested residents can sign up to sessions being run all throughout the day, including planning what is next at 10am, being your own boss at 11am and understanding the job market at 2pm. Stall holders will also be present on the day for jobseekers to ask questions and maybe find the right fit for them. For more information or to register for one of the sessions head to https://www.cclc. vic.gov.au/jobexpo/

Mental health fix Improving mental health services in the Cardinia region has long been an issue that Councillor Carol Ryan has advocated for, having worked in the medical profession for over 40 years, specialising in mental health, disability and aged care. Now that the findings from the recent Royal Commission into the Victorian mental health system have been released, calling for widespread reform, Councillor Ryan is excited that
we may see some real changes implemented in the near future as our state begins to prioritise mental health and wellbeing. “I’m so pleased that there has been a Royal Commission into adult mental health, this has been a long time coming,” Councillor Ryan said. “I’ve been advocating for improved mental health services here for a long time and I think that it’s great that we will be looking into it more now. The biggest stigma is that mental health has
been around since the 1800’s and it’s nothing new. We have had a chance to reform it year after year, but it’s taken Covid to actually do this Royal Commission - and that’s very sad,” she said. The final report was released on Wednesday 3 March and with 65 recommendations for change proposed, it seems a total overhaul of the system is on the cards, which Councillor Ryan hopes will improve services for residents from the entire Cardinia region.
“We need accessibility, we need affordability and we need it in Pakenham so it can service places like Nar Nar Goon, Lang Lang, even as far as Drouin,” she said. “When you look at ourselves and Drouin, there’s nothing in between - so hopefully things are on the rise very soon.” Councillor Ryan said that it would be “a welcome addition” to gain some funding towards improved mental health services and that she would continue advocating and “working hard to get services” for the local community.
