A much-loved Pakenham grandfather, who was struck by a car and left on the side of Kooweerup Road, has sadly died in hospital. Police confirmed on Wednesday morning, 17 February, that the victim, Don, passed away in hospital overnight. The 60-year-old was riding his Vespa-type scooter just before 7pm on Tuesday 9 February, when he was thrown into a drainage ditch after being hit by an overtaking vehicle. Don, an avid darts player, was travelling towards Kooweerup to play darts when one vehicle, which police have dubbed vehicle B, overtook his scooter and another car, dubbed vehicle A. At the same time car B was overtaking, it’s believed car A allegedly attempted to overtake the scooter but swerved back in and struck the back of the scooter causing it to crash, police say. Police located an unresponsive Don near the intersection of Healesville-Kooweerup Road and Ballarto Road in Pakenham South. He was taken to hospital and placed in intensive care. Following the crash, Major Collision Investigation Unit Detective Sergeant Mark Amos told the Gazette the victim was in the “battle of his life“. Don, a father of two and grandfather of five, had only just retired from a career in bricklaying. “For a 60-year-old man to be laying bricks, he’s obviously a very tough man,” Sgt Amos said. Major Collision Investigation Unit detectives are continuing to appeal for witnesses following the fatal crash. Sgt Amos said he was “very comfortable” that the offending cars would have known they had struck Don. “I just cannot fathom how you don’t stop,” he said. “Anytime there is a hit and run, people will stop for animals, but why don’t you stop for a human being?” Sgt Amos called on the drivers of the two
