A retail worker, supermarket employee, student and local aged care residents were among the 52 active coronavirus cases recorded in the Cardinia Shire, as of Tuesday 5 August. Over the past week, a staff member at the Reject Shop in Officer tested positive to the virus, as did a Pakenham Coles employee, local secondary school students and a resident and worker from a Pakenham aged care facility. The Reject Shop employee from Officer’s Arena Shopping Centre who returned a positive test, forced the store to temporarily close for a deep clean on Tuesday 5 August. According to a statement from Arena Shopping Centre, the staff member last worked on Saturday 26 July, and they are not believed to have transmitted the virus to anyone else at the shopping centre. “Please be assured that the wellbeing of our community continues to be our top priority,“ the statement read. “We are working closely with the Reject Shop, other retailers in the centre and the Department of Health taking all necessary steps to ensure ongoing safety in the centre.” A Coles employee from Heritage Springs recently tested positive, however in a statement, Coles said the employee hadn’t been in the store since Saturday 25 July. Contact tracing was carried out, but the Gazette understands that no other team members were required to self isolate. The supermarket giant said that the risk of transmission to customers or colleagues was “very low”. Two local secondary schools were also forced to shut for deep cleans following positive cases this week. Pakenham Secondary College and St Francis Xavier College in Beaconsfield closed on Monday 3 August. St Francis Xavier College was informed on Saturday 1 August that a senior school student had returned a positive Covid-19 test. The Beaconsfield college asked all students and staff who had been in close contact with the confirmed case to self-isolate and undergo
cluding cleaning and tracing of close contacts,” a DHHS spokesperson said on Saturday 1 August. “All staff and residents will be tested.” As of 4 August, there was a total of 52 active cases in Cardinia Shire, 310 in Casey and 129 in Yarra Ranges.
