Walkers, joggers, and cyclists are begging for the Toomuc Valley Nature Reserve shared path to be extended.

A petition to continue the existing path along Toomuc Valley Road at Syme Road and extend to Brown Road and then join Brown Road to the very popular Cardinia Aqueduct Trail is circulating the community.

“As a regular at Pakenham parkrun for over four years and 220 events, I am committed to a healthy lifestyle, love this community and see the extension as a critical and much needed project. I am totally committed to the project,” resident Jack Mitchell said.

“As housing estates extend further north on Toomuc Valley Road more locals would be encouraged to proceed safely, there is also Beaconhills College, the early learning centre and the residents of the Gold Care Retirement Village.”

At present, the paved path only extends for about 500 metres north of Princes Highway severely limiting progress for residents and recreational pursuits.

Mr Mitchell said benefits of extending the path include: improved community and school children safety, all abilities access, use for cycling, walking and sporting groups, tourism encouragement, social cohesion improvement and more.

“Whist the proposal has support from the shire, the cost to proceed to Stage 2 to Brown Road will nonetheless require funding contributions from all levels of government,” Mr Mitchell said.

“With strong promotion and determined community support the aim is to encourage thousands of locals to sign the petition.”

La Trobe MP Jason said the Toomuc Valley Nature Reserve shared path project has received a great deal of community support, for which he is also “fervently” in favour of.

“This project has great potential to be a major attraction for the La Trobe community,” Mr Wood said.

All set for big thankyou

By Mitchell Clarke Emergency services personnel who spent their festive season fighting fires will be given an opportunity to celebrate with their loved ones at the Pakenham Racing Club.

The 'Thank Your Emergency Services' race night, an initiative by Gembrook MP Brad Battin, will encourage all paid and volunteer emergency service personnel to attend the festival of fun on Thursday 2 April.

"Thanks to the major local sponsor Parklea Developments, first responders and their families will be able to enjoy a free night at the Pakenham races, with a free barbecue, kids entertainment and live music," Mr Battin said.

"With many of our emergency services having to give up their summers and spend time away from their family over the festive season, this event will hopefully give them a night with their families to remember."

Pakenham Racing Club's commercial and racing general manager Wade Calderwood said it was a no-brainer to get involved in the event.

"When approached late last year by Brad regarding his idea to hold a community event which focused on giving back to the families of volunteers and emergency services workers, the Pakenham Racing Club were very keen to play our part," Mr Calderwood said.

"Originally the focus was around recognising those involved in fighting the 2019 Bunyip fires, but as the devastation unfolded in East Gippsland, the concept grew into a major event.

"The PRC look forward to seeing a bumper crowd on the night and are proud to show our support for those workers and their families who were amazing during the Bunyip and recent Gippsland bushfires."

The night is set to showcase community spirit at its best, with the Rotary Clubs of Pakenham and Berwick providing volunteers for the evening.

An electronic speed sign was knocked down as a result of the incident.

Motorists were brought to a halt as emergency services surveyed the damage.

Truck jack-knifes in crash A man was transported to The Alfred hospital with suspected serious injuries after a truck jack-knifed in Pakenham.

Emergency services were called to the extraordinary scene on the Princes Highway between Toomuc Valley Road and McGregor Road, about 6.40am on Friday 6 March.

Witnesses described the scene as "total carnage" as motorists were brought to an immediate halt.

An onlooker told the Gazette that it appeared like two trucks were involved in the collision.

"It looks like there were two trucks and the one in the left hand lane went to merge into the right lane, and the truck in the right lane got caught between the truck and its trailer," he said.

"It literally crushed the cabin of the truck in the right lane."

The force of the incident brought an electronic speed sign to the ground.

Police, CFA, SES, paramedics and tow trucks were all called to the early morning scene.

When asked, a Victoria Police spokesman confirmed police were at the scene directing traffic but couldn't provide details on how the collision occurred.

An Ambulance Victoria spokeswoman said a man had been transported to The Alfred hospital by road ambulance, suffering "suspected serious injuries".

A CFA spokesman added that the scene was quickly under control and that no one had been trapped as a result.

It's understood a large amount of diesel had been spilled across the road and VicRoads had been notified to clean it up.

Stations on ‘worst’ list

By Jessica Anstice Beaconsfield and Officer train stations have been ranked in the top 10 worst in the state, new data reveals.

RAVC conducted a survey in 2019 to determine which railway stations and services have the most inadequate accessibility, poor safety control and chronic crowding.

With more than 24,000 rail commuters participating in the biennial On Track survey and 311 stations in Victoria, Officer Train Station was dubbed the ninth 'worst performer' with a score of 4.41 out of 10, while Beaconsfield was tenth at 4.42.

This is the first time the two Pakenham line stations have been in the bottom 10.

When participants filled out the survey, they were asked to rate the station they regularly use out of 10, with 10 being 'very satisfied' and one being 'very dissatisfied'.

Other low ranking stations included South Kensington (2.48), Aircraft (3.43), Donnybrook (3.44), Hastings (3.50), Broadmeadows (3.74), Jacana (3.76), Ruthven (3.96) and Tarneit (4.27).

The top performing stations included Hawkstowe (9), Carnegie, Pakenham line (8.61) and Middle Gorge (8.48).

Gembrook MP Brad Battin said the report is "another example of commuters in the south east being ignored by the arrogant Labor Government".

"For years we have joined the community calling on Labor to match the Liberal's election commitment in 2018 for shelter upgrades, toilet facilities and added security for Beaconsfield Railway Station, yet they continue to turn their backs on our community," he said.

"Labor has been in government for 17 out of the last 21 years, the lack of infrastructure, lack of planning and lack of action can only be blamed on the lack of care from Labor to the south east.

Beaconsfield and Officer train stations have been ranked in the top 10 worst in the state.

"Congestion is a major issue in the south east, our trains are full, our roads are congested and Labor tells us it is all ok - that is arrogant."

According to RACV, 60 percent of respond-

ents who drive a car to the train station said better public transport would make them consider alternative ways of getting to the station.

Participants, particularly in regional parts

of the state, told RACV they have no other option but to drive to their station.

The State Government has been contacted for comment.

Car park not complete

By Jessica Anstice The Labor Government is “refusing” to use available federal cash to build more car spaces at train stations in Casey and Cardinia regions, Liberal MP Brad Battin told Star News.

According to Mr Battin, the completed car spaces at Officer Train Station were due to open in February however it is still fenced off.

“How can the Labor Government justify delaying the opening of the Officer Train Station car parks other than it was parliament sitting week this week? They put a photo opportunity ahead of passenger safety and convenience,” he said.

“Passengers using Officer Train Station are forced to park on the side of the gravel road and are forced to walk past the completed carparks that sit behind a wire fence.

“Train station car parks in Casey and Cardinia overflow daily and the Labor Government refuse to use the available federal cash

to build more car spaces now. What are they waiting for?”

Mr Battin said the Labor Government needs to stop “playing politics” with the train stations.

“They need to accept the available federal funding for over 2000 spaces, start delivering on their own 2018 election commitment and simply open these car parks,” he added.

Bass Labor MP Jordan Crugnale said the demand is growing along the Pakenham train line and the new car park at Officer Station will open this month.

“Officer Station will open this month after important accessibility and safety upgrades to the platform and car park,” Ms Crugnale said.

“The Andrews Labor Government is investing $16 billion to improve the Pakenham line, including removing 17 level crossings, as well as working with the Commonwealth Government to upgrade car parks along Melbourne’s biggest growth corridor.”

Splash of colour for Holi

By Jessica Anstice Hundreds of community members from diverse cultures came together to celebrate the ‘Festival of Colours’ - otherwise known as Holi Festival.

The huge celebration, organised by the Indian Australia Community Corporative (IACC), took place at Pakenham’s Living and Learning Centre on Monday 9 March.

The Holi Festival - mainly celebrated in India and Nepal but growingly worldwide - is an ancient, traditional Hindu event that marks the beginning of a new season.

Interestingly, each year the festival is celebrated on a different date depending on the phase of the moon.

“Traditionally in India we celebrate with the term called ‘Holi’ which obviously has a mythological meaning but essentially it is about celebrating goodness,” IACC member Mayur Meshram said.

“But the best thing about the festival is that is brings everybody together, regardless of their culture or whatever they believe in.

“It’s just an occasion for everyone to celebrate together.”

More than 300 children and adults spent the afternoon splashing coloured powder at one another, while dancing to two hours of non-stop music by DJ rucks.

“It wasn’t as big as last year when we had about 1500 people attend but we had a lot of marking - this time was a little more low-key for us,” he said.

Community groups and organisations from across the Cardinia region, including Pakenham SES and Tynong CFA volunteer crews, and Bass MP Jordan Crugnale and Cardinia Shire Council Cr Michael Schilling , demonstrated support by taking part in the festivities.

IACC, Tynong Fire Brigade and Pakenham SES have worked closely over the past few months to provide much-needed support for the Bunyip bushfire relief.

“People who were really affected by the bushfires have given us feedback that something like this brings people together,” Mr Meshram said.

“It’s just the whole combination of: it doesn’t matter who you are and the colours.”

A health warning has been issued for Victorians to avoid gathering wild mushrooms following widespread rain across the state.

Victoria's Deputy Chief Health Officer Dr Angie Bone today issued a warning about Poisonous Death Cap mushrooms which have begun to sprout much earlier than usual due to ideal growing conditions.

"The Death Cap is extremely toxic and responsible for 90 per cent of all mushroom poisoning deaths. Death can follow within 48 hours from serious liver damage," Dr Bone said.

Just received my dog renewal notice from Casey Council and I noticed that for the first time there is shown a Victorian Government levied fee of $4 for every dog and cat in Casey.

That does not sound a lot, but when you consider that it is a 16.30 per cent increase on the council charge, that is a substantial amount, added to what is already is an excessive figure for doing nothing.

I also note that Casey has 36.323 cats and dogs registered, which equates to in excess of $145,000.

This was also the strategy of the Marshall plan of America immediately after the major war when the world's economies were tethering on the brink of catastrophe.

I think it was Roosevelt who started the Colombo plan and injected money into the economies of the poor countries to start up projects for the development of infrastructure thus creating jobs in the poor countries and thus their wealth grew and they were able to purchase all kinds of products from the rich countries and the whole world grew economically.

I believe a similar strategy to that of Rudd policy.

I believe the Australian Government ought to give $1000 to all families earning under $100,000.00 annually and pensioners given this too.

A Department of Transport (DoT) spokesperson said Berwick Station is serviced by 11 different bus routes, "co-ordinated with trains to get passengers wherever they need to go."

"DoT is always evaluating future improvements and welcomes feedback from the community to deliver better services for locals," the spokesperson said.

Bus services to and from Berwick station were revised in August 2018 when additional rail services were added to Pakenham/Cranbourne lines.

According to DoT, for bus services where Berwick station is the "primary coordination location," connections will be timetabled with

the five to 10 minute connection in the peak direction of travel.

During the evening peak period, trains arrive at Berwick station from the city as frequently as every seven to eight minutes, DoT says.

In a statement, DoT says in some circumstances, it may be possible that a bus departure from Berwick may be at a similar time as a train arrival from the city but coordinated with an earlier train arrival.

"For example, there are train arrivals at 5.59pm and 6.07pm the bus route 847 departure at 6.08pm is coordinated with the 5.59pm train arrival to provide a nine minute connection".

The Akoonah Park Men's Shed has raised much-needed funds for charity after raffling off the results of years of hard work.

Members of the Shed have been busy restoring a 1959 four door Morris Minor 1000 sedan, affectionately known as Doris.

It took three years to restore the car to close to original condition.

The body, brakes, steering, suspension, electrical system, engine and gearbox were fully stripped and rebuilt by members of the Shed, with parts sourced locally from other Morris Minor enthusiasts and parts suppliers and from the UK suppliers where necessary.

Two donor cars were given to the Shed and a few parts were also used from those cars.

While the project took slightly longer than anticipated, members of the Shed felt it was worth it in the end.

Doris was raffled off in early February, with only a limited number of 100 tickets available for the public to purchase.

Funds raised have been directed to the

Doris now has a new home up north with New South Welshman Peter Murace, who bought the lucky number 19 ticket.

Mr Murace spotted an article on Doris on the All British Car Club website and ordered a ticket.

Members of the Men's Shed even arranged to drive Doris up for him.

Mr Murace is a bit of a fan of Morris enthusiast, having owned a 1936 Morris 8/40 and a

Morris Major Elite.

He plans to register Doris on historic registration so he can drive it with his car club, 510 Historic Vehicles Incorporated.

"It's exactly how I expected it from the photos and description," he said.

He plans to get a sign made for the boot lid to honour the Men's Shed.

"I've never won a thing in my life!" he said.

"I'm so excited about winning it and hopefully we can drive her out and have a good time."

Like many, Declan Foley hates catching a connecting bus home.

His reason, he says, is due to the poor connection timetable between bus and train services at Berwick railway station.

Mr Foley, who catches the train home from the city on week days, says when his train arrives at Berwick station at 4.26pm, the bus departs.

He's therefore left to wait for the next bus - a situation he describes as "unbelievable".

It's an ongoing problem for the last three to four years, he says.

Mr Foley says he's tried speaking with Ventura Bus, which runs the bus service from Berwick railway station, who he says "claim their contract does not oblige them to connect with any train timetable".

He's also called the state's public transport authorities about the issue - which he says is only met with "waffle" on the phone.

"Surely, in this day and age with radio and mobile phone communication, a bus should not depart a railway station when a train is either approaching or standing on the platform disgorging passengers?" Mr Foley says.

Mr Foley, a Berwick resident of 22 years, even emailed the Premier's office saying "common sense has now officially departed all of the members of this Labor Party Government".

"Many of us try to reduce our car driving by using public transport, yet no one appears to be able to make a simple connection between a train arrival and a bus departing," he says in the email.

Passenger’s fury over disconnect

Police have arrested four men during a series of dawn raids, seizing weapons, drugs and cash following warrants across the south-east this on Thursday 5 March.

The warrants were executed by detectives from the Echo Taskforce, Frankston Crime Investigation Unit, Mornington Divisional Response Unit and Southern Metro Regional Crime Team at residential properties in Hallam, Pakenham, Frankston and Berwick, as well as an OMCG clubhouse in Cranbourne West.

The warrants formed part of an investigation in relation to illicit firearms possession and an aggravated carjacking which occurred on 19 February in Shaxton Circle, Frankston, police say.

During that incident it's believed a group of males assaulted two victims before stealing their vehicles.

The victims sustained minor injuries and did not receive medical treatment.

The men currently in custody are: • A 25-year-old man from Hallam, a 25-year-old man from Frankston and a 20-year-old man from Adelaide all arrested at the Hallam address; and • A 19-year-old man from Yarrawonga arrested at a Mount Eliza address.

Police also seized a number of items at the Hallam address including a loaded sawn-off shotgun, ammunition, drugs, cash, a stolen KTM motorcycle and a stolen Nissan 4WD. The group are expected to be charged with a range of offences including assault, aggravated carjacking, possession of prohibited firearms, drug and theft related matters.

All four will appear before the Melbourne Magistrates' Court on Thursday 5 March.

Classroom open to ideas Students at Berwick's Timbarra P-9 College can now enjoy lessons in fresh air after winning a recycled outdoor classroom.

Organised through a partnership between brands Fairy and Ambi Pur and global recycling pioneers, TerraCycle last year, a competition to win one of five outdoor classroom packages was offered to shoppers who purchased any of the brand's dish or air care products at Woolworths supermarkets and scanned their rewards card.

The outdoor classrooms will support education about the importance of recycling by demonstrating to young people how recycled materials can be turned into new and useful products.

Each classroom comprises six recycled benches, four raised garden beds, an outdoor whiteboard - all made with recycled plastic plus cash, making the total prize value $25,000.

Timbarra acting assistant principal Bill Exton said he was excited about the recent arrival of the classroom and the opportunity to teach students good recycling habits.

"The addition of an outdoor classroom to our school will help us deliver a strong education to our students. Being able to provide another learning environment is particularly exciting.

"Every student learns differently and having these facilities means that we can enhance the learning of our students to a greater extent," he said.

"The classroom will also enable us to teach our students the importance of recycling and being environmentally conscious, skills that are basic to providing young people with a 21st century education. Together, we're guiding the future generation to be leaders."

Berwick Stamp Club The next meeting of Berwick Stamp Club will be held on March 8th at the Old Cheese Factory in Homestead Road, Berwick. Cardy fishes for new nets By sports editor Russell Bennett All sporting teams should be able to expect a level playing field. From there, they can launch.

The Cardinia Cricket Club has one of the most picturesque home grounds around.

That’s not the problem. Their practice facilities are.

The Bulls’ nets have officially been ‘condemned’ since 2016, and - to put it simply they’re dangerous to practice on.

Of the three nets that sit up against the boundary in the south-western pocket of E. Gunton Oval, only one can be used by the players with any real confidence.

And even that one has a distinct lean on the surface of the pitch.

The other two nets have a multitude of different problems, from poor netting, to holes in the fencing, to unstable bowling run-ups, to cracks or holes in the surface of the actual pitches.

All three have a lack of lighting, too, which effectively means bedlam on training nights for the senior and junior Bulls sides as coaches rush to get the players some much needed time with ball or bat in hand.

Cricket Victoria did a facilities check at Cardinia nearly four years ago, and the results - when it came to the nets - painted an incredibly damning picture.

It’s long been time for the Bulls to receive an upgrade to their practice facilities. Now for a club that fields sides in two of the West Gippsland Cricket Association’s A Grade divisions - times are desperate.

Even the location of their current nets doesn’t meet current standards. They push so hard up against the ground’s playing surface that the bowlers run-ups are on the ground, itself.

The Bulls have a plan for new training facilities - one that would see a brand new net complex built on the opposite corner of the reserve, next to Ballarto Road.

But they’re desperately calling on financial help from wherever they can get it to help make their dream a reality.

With new training nets set to cost at least $60,000, the Bulls are searching for ways to raise at least half of that money - whether it be through local, State, or Federal government grants; or corporate sponsorship.

“The rec reserve gave us the go-ahead to put the nets there, and we spoke to the council and they said that location is all good too - the problem’s been about getting the funding,” Welsh said recently, at the oval overlooking the dilapidated nets and rundown sight screen.

“We can only train fully in one of our existing nets, but we still use the others too - we have no real choice.

“But only the better batsmen can go in those, otherwise they’re not safe.

“I’m very wary of who’s in the nets and who’s bowling to them. I have to be.”

Welsh spoke about the Bulls being comfortably the biggest sporting club in the town. In many ways, the Cardinia Cricket Club is the heart of that small community.

But it wasn’t until he returned for the 2019/20 season that he realised just how dire the Bulls’ plight was when it came to their practice facilities.

“We’re a genuinely home-grown club, and our Premier side is made up of just 11 (player) points ... but when we try to train in our own nets it’s a nightmare,” he said.

“You try and attract juniors here and get as many as you can, but then when they come and see the nets it’s just hard work.

“When you come here on a Thursday night we’ve got three junior sides running around trying to train, and then we’ve got to try and train as a senior group too.

“We’re here until 8:30 just training (without lights directly overlooking the nets).

“Still, we manage to be one of the strongest clubs in the competition. Our facilities are great, but we don’t have training facilities to match them.”

Locals shine on the big stage at statewide sport awards

By Nick Creely There was plenty of local recognition at the recent Victorian Sports Awards, with both the Victorian Sikh Games and the City of Casey taking out prestigious honours.

The awards, held on the night of nights for the Victorian sporting community, recognise and celebrate the achievements of homegrown premier athletes, grassroots heroes and those who have shown commitment and dedication to community sport in Victoria.

Presented by the State Government of Victoria and Vicsport at Marvel Stadium, the Victorian Sport Awards honoured individual and team athletes, coaches, administrators and volunteers from both metropolitan and regional Victoria.

Locally, the Victorian Sikh Games took out the Community Sporting Event of the Year for an outstanding event held at Casey Fields in 2019 - topping a large group of very strong finalists.

The Sikh Games involved 14 sports, open to all skills and backgrounds over three days.

Across those days, over 100,000 people attended with 140,000 free meals provided by the local Sikh Temple communities, as well as managing traffic and crowds, sporting protocols, and food and beverage procedures.

Magpies’ fire still burns

By Tyler Lewis Make no mistake; there will be no premiership hangover for Narre Warren in 2020.

The Magpies climbed over arch nemesis Berwick in the big dance of last year’s AFL Outer East Premier division, and the black and white army will be holding nothing back when it retakes the field in season 2020.

Shane Dwyer was handed the reins of the Magpie group in the off-season but doesn’t believe there is any added pressure attached to the ’reigning premier’ tag. He also confirmed his side has retained all but one of its premiership 22 from last year.

“We aren’t putting any pressure on ourselves to think we have to go and win it again,” he said. “(Of course) we would like to win it, like everyone.

“We have just been focused on keeping as much as possible - which we have done, add a couple, and tweak a few things.

“Berwick, Cranbourne and Beaconsfield, all those boys are going to be strong again, (so) I don’t think we will be adding any pressure to ourselves.

“It has been massive to keep pretty much keep all but one of our grand final side.

“Michael Collins retired but we’ve pretty much kept the rest of that group.

“There are a lot of young blokes who got better with their footy last year, and they should improve again this year.

“We have lost other players who didn’t play in that grand final, though only a couple. That was the main focus - to retain them - which we look like we have done, and that’s huge.”

A major addition to the Narre Warren outfit is the destructive, yet classy, Nick Battle. After a string of accolade-filled years for the Doveton Eagles, Battle decided to pull on the prison bars to strengthen Narre’s already imposing midfield brigade.

The Magpies are still hungry to feel this emotion again in 2020.

“It is handy, very handy,” Dwyer admitted of Battle’s inclusion.

“He has a lot of mates down there; one of his best mates is Trent Cody, so that has made him fit really easily into the group.

“It has been good, watching him go about his training and in the intra-club game.

“He has a massive tank and he will be a pretty good addition to our group, no problems.”

While the Narre Warren forward half will be without the legendary Collins, Dwyer doesn’t think a lot will change from ‘the Narre way’

that has been its calling card in the past.

“The Narre way, for a long time now, has been quick footy,” he said.

“Get it in quickly - if the boys don’t mark it, the little blokes go about their work. Not a lot will change there, it has been a successful formula.

“That (premiership) was huge for those boys last year. To be honest, we were pretty big underdogs.

“To come away with a win against the odds for the group, if anything, it builds their confi-

“In saying that, Berwick is going to be the same, if not better, this year so we are under no illusion that (Berwick) isn’t going to be the biggest challenge in the comp.

“We will have to prove to get to their level again, and it will be their last year in the competition (so) I am pretty sure they will want to go out with a bang.

“In saying that, we beat them last year. We only beat them once, but you only need to beat them once.”
