The pair were said by Mr Woodman’s lobbyist and cash courier Lorraine Wreford to have got “greedy”. So much so that she wasn’t sure who was bribing who, she told the inquiry.

She also claimed that Cr Aziz had requested her to perjure herself, in relation to a $600,000 transaction between Cr Aziz and Mr Woodman.

Ms Wreford, a former state MP, was part of a lineage of Casey mayors linked to Mr Woodman. Others included Crs Aziz and Ablett, as well as Cr Stapledon who is yet to take the IBAC stand.

Another former Casey mayor Janet Halsall was said to be the campaign manager for a $100,000 Woodman fund for about 10 candidates in the 2016 council elections.

According to the council, the move was to give the community “assurance” in its decision making’s integrity The inquiry started with a bang in November, alleging that Crs Aziz and Ablett received collectively up to $1.2 million from Mr Woodman and associated companies.

Mr Woodman and his clients stood to make many millions more as the councillors were said to work in his favour on three planning matters in Cranbourne West and Cranbourne East.

They were the Amendment C219 rezoning of industrial land, the H3 intersection in Hall Road and the Pavilion Estate.

The payment methods to Crs Aziz and Ablett were varied.

Casey Council is teetering on the brink after being exposed in the largest corruption scandal in its 25-year history.

The IBAC Operation Sandon inquiry has dug deep into alleged dirty deals between councillors Geoff Ablett, Sam Aziz and Amanda Stapledon and property developer John Woodman.

Such is its profound impact and the ramifications on local government planning authority as a whole, the inquiry is Star News’s ‘Event of the Year’.

The State Government, itself tainted by more than $150,000 in election donations from Mr Woodman, has not ruled out sacking the council.

With IBAC to resume in February, Casey has been put under the purview of a State Government-appointed Monitor.

In the shadows of New Years’ Eve, councillors took the extraordinary measure of largely removing themselves from the planning process during the IBAC inquiry.

Their planning decisions will be delegated

elected to council and none declared the assistance, IBAC heard.

After the revelation, Ms Halsall resigned as a staffer for federal MP Jason Wood.

Mr Woodman told the inquiry that he’d donated to the state election campaigns of current mayor Susan Serey as well as Crs Ablett and Stapledon.

The inquiry shone light on Mr Woodman’s interest in mayoral elections and Casey’s former chief executive Mike Tyler’s sudden departure last year.

It heard then mayor Cr Ablett bragging to Mr Woodman that he “nailed” the CEO - who was regarded by Mr Woodman as an obstruction on C219. Mr Woodman later told his planning consultant Megan Schutz that, by getting rid of Tyler, he effectively got new Casey CEO Glenn Patterson his job.

During a council debate on a Woodman interest, Ms Schutz allegedly texted messages to ‘coach’ Cr Aziz while he ushered through an alternative motion that she’d written.

Cr Ablett declared a conflict of interest but was still said to be lobbying in the background on Mr Woodman’s behalf.

He allegedly strategised with the Save Cranbourne West Residents Action Group, which received about $198,000 of Woodman money and campaigned for his interests.

Cr Stapledon, who’d received financial help from Mr Woodman for her disabled son’s care, sought Mr Woodman’s support to be mayor in 2018, the inquiry heard.

Ahead of council elections in November, IBAC is set to consider possible changes to rules around political donations and councillors’ conflict-of-interest.

One option is mirroring NSW’s blanket ban on political donations by property developers.

The inquiry resumes in February.

Cranbourne’s cup victory Cranbourne-born jockey Craig Williams etched his name in the history books after clinching Australia’s greatest race.

In his 15th attempt at the race that stops the nation, 42-year old Williams’ finally piloted home Australian-bred horse Vow and Declare at Flemington on Tuesday 5 November.

“A credit to Vow and Declare, he just gave me a beautiful ride,” the former Cranbourne primary and secondary school student told the media after the thrilling race finish.

“I’m so grateful to be given the opportunity.. I will really enjoy this,” he said.

The win capped off a stellar year for Cranbourne’s favourite son, who rode Dr Drill to victory in the Cranbourne Cup on 13 October.

Williams is a world-renowned rider and has won Group One races in Hong Kong, France, Dubai, the UK and Japan.

Cranbourne Turf Club chief executive Neil Bainbridge was thrilled for the champion jockey, who he described as hardworking and the “ultimate professional”.

“His family, they’ve had a great association with the Cranbourne racing industry for a long time - to win his first Melbourne Cup, it’s tremendous.

“His brothers are still involved locally along with his dad,” he said, “so it’s a big family occasion.”

Mr Bainbridge said Williams had always been a good supporter of the club and “only too happy to help out.”

“He’s always out there walking the tracks, he puts in the hard yards; he deserves every success he gets,” he added.

Geoff Whiffin, chairman of the Cranbourne Turf Club, said he and his wife Nolene Whiffin were close friends with the Williams family and also used to babysit Craig as a boy.

“Craig used to come away on holidays with us... he was a big fat tubby little fella and nobody thought he’d make a jockey,” he laughed.

He described Williams’ Melbourne Cup win as a “fantastic dedication,” adding “What he

Talented jockey dies in tragic trackwork accident

By Brendan Rees The community was in mourning after the shock death of apprentice jockey Mikaela Claridge.

The 22-year-old of Clyde died after a freak accident at Cranbourne Training Centre on Friday 30 August.

Ms Claridge had been riding with a colleague on the sand trails about 4.35am when she fell from her horse.

An on-course paramedic quickly came to her aid but she was unable to be revived.

Cranbourne Turf Club chief executive Neil Bainbridge, said the racing industry was “deeply saddened.”

“She was a popular member of the Cran-

bourne racing community and will be sadly missed.”

Cranbourne trainer Trent Busuttin described the incident as “heartbreaking.”

“It’s a terrible situation,” he said. “Obviously your main thoughts are with family and her friends and her partner.”

Christine Reeve, a track-work rider at the Cranbourne Racecourse, said she had been riding about the time the incident occurred.

“It’s just a very, very sad and tragic morning for everybody,” she said. “You just don’t expect it to happen.”

Ms Claridge started her apprenticeship in 2015 however a back injury saw her riding career put on hold during which time she completed a Bachelor of Primary

Education degree.

She returned to the saddle in 2017 having moved to Echuca under the trainers Donna Gaskin and Mick Cornish.

The following year Ms Claridge made her debut race at Wangaratta on King’s Hand which provided her first victory at Echuca about a month later.

She transferred her apprenticeship to trainer Ken Keys at Cranbourne, winning 28 races - the most recent at Sale.

Racing Victoria chief executive Giles Thompson, said Ms Claridge was “a much loved and valuable member” of the racing community.

Aziz leads mad minutes A Casey councillor was accused of “making a fool of himself” after a minute silence was held for victims of the Christchurch massacre in March.

During a council meeting councillors and the public gallery stood for a minute’s silence following the horrific shooting in New Zealand.

However Cr Sam Aziz called for a minute’s silence to honour the lives of those lost in a recent Nigerian attack and a terrorist attack in the Philippines.

“It’s imperative upon us to also acknowledge everyone who has perished,” Cr Aziz said.

“I’m sure that all the members of the Muslim community present here in the gallery would unhesitatingly join me in honouring their memory in this way.”

After a minute’s silence, Cr Aziz rose again in the council chamber requesting councillors to take a further minute silence “to actually honour the memory of those that we haven’t remembered and those that have got no one to remember them.”

A resident in the gallery, who asked not to be named, said she and her husband were “appalled” by Cr Aziz’s behaviour.

“He got up and made an absolute fool of himself and council as far as we were concerned,” she said.

Adam Sadiqzai, a community leader and a proud Muslim, said he was disappointed by Cr Aziz’s comments.

“It’s so disheartening that we have paid, elected representatives that are divisive and politically point scoring at a time that’s so inappropriate,” Mr Sadiqzai said, who was elected as the new president of the Casey Multi-Faith Network in 2019. “Those kinds of comments undermine the gravity of what’s happened in New Zealand and normalising these horrible events. They’re essentially saying, ‘Well, it’s okay that happened, because all of this happened’. It just makes no sense to me.

“No life is more valuable than another. Our

Cr Wayne Smith said the further minute silences by Cr Aziz seemed a “bit of an attempt” to diminish the Christchurch tribute.

Cr Aziz posted on his Facebook page at the time saying: “I stand by what I did, and I hope I

won’t have to do it again. As I have said before: All lives matter.”

Furthermore, Cr Rosalie Crestani said she was upset when Sheikh Daud Dlongolo of Hallam Mosque was invited to conduct a prayer at the council meeting following the Christchurch massacre saying she “simply did not” agree with it.

“We were there with compassion for fellow humanity who were killed in the mosques in New Zealand; however I prayed to my God and held my Bible up at one point, and asked Jesus to comfort the families of the victims of the attack in New Zealand, for justice and peace to prevail.”

One unusual shark rescue marking the end of a two-month campaign to have the shark relocated from the Bass site.

Crystal World IT manager Sharon Williamson, who is also from the Australian Animal Rescue, saw the plight of the shark and made contact with the owner.

“They agreed to donate her to Crystal World so she can continue her preservation,“ she said Februarys heat meant that Ms Williamson and the team at Crystal World had to work fast so Rosie did not become more damaged or dry out. It was expected that 20,000 litres of glycerine would be needed to fill Rosie’s new tank, at a cost of between $30,000 and $50,000.

It’s not every year a two-tonne great white shark is lifted onto the back of a truck and driven down the Bass Highway.

But after a YouTube video went viral in late 2018, the world learnt of the preserved fourmetre long beast named Rosie, who has left abandoned in a wildlife aquarium in the Victorian town of Bass.

No longer a well-kept secret, Rosie became an unofficial tourist attraction for trespassers and explorers who smashed her tank and littered her Wildlife Wonderland premises at the beginning of 2019.

When owner Nick became fed up with snoops, he offered to donate her free of charge to Crystal World in Devon Meadows.

Rosie was transported down the Bass Highway and rehomed at Crystal World in February,

Jailed over cop’s death A drunk and ice-addled P-plate driver who hit speeds of up to 200km/h before he struck and killed an off-duty police officer on a memorial ride was jailed in August.

Jesse Reid of Botanic Ridge pleaded guilty to charges of culpable driving causing death and reckless conduct endangering life in the Melbourne County Court on 30 August 2019.

Reid was convicted after losing control at a bend, spinning the car into the path of 59-year old Detective Senior Sergeant Victor Kostiuk.

Mr Kostiuk’s son Felix had been riding alongside him in the Wall to Wall motorbike charity ride to honour fallen police colleagues.

The court heard Felix was about to perform

CPR on his father when he was verbally abused by an enraged Reid who was bleeding from the temple and had his fists clenched, Judge Trevor Wraight said.

Reid, 23, was in a hurry to get home from a trip to Merimbula after receiving the news his partner had gone into early labour last September.

Reid asked his 16-year-old friend to blow into the alcohol interlock device fitted to his Holden Commodore so it would start, the court heard.

They stopped at Eden to see friends, smoke ice and drink alcohol before continuing on the Princes Highway near Orbost.

At one point, while Reid was in the passenger’s seat, he took videos saying: “When you’re too f----- to drive and your baby is being born your mate comes through,“ Judge Wraight said.

Later, when Reid was behind the wheel speeding, his companion spurred him on saying: “Keep going, keep going“.

Judge Wraight said that as Reid raced through Cabbage Tree Creek, about a five hours from Melbourne, a witnessed said the Commodore “just flew out of sight.“ Reid then struck and killed Detective Senior Sergeant Kostiuk with the tragedy having an immediate, devastating and on-going impact

on his son Felix, also a police officer.

“I distinctly remember his arms flailing in the air,“ Felix said of his father.

Judge Wraight said Felix had suffered post traumatic disorder and had not returned to work.

“Your conduct at the scene in the moments following the collision was callous and reprehensible,“ Judge Wraight said in his sentencing.

Judge Wraight also concluded Reid’s attitude indicated a complete lack of regard for who may be at risk of his conduct.

Reid was sentenced to a maximum of 10 years’ jail and will be eligible for parole in seven years.

Casey’s youngest mayor The City of Casey saw the election of its youngest mayor.

The 29-year old Susan Serey was voted into the mayoral role during a special council meeting on Tuesday 29 October.

After serving as an Edrington Ward councillor for seven years Ms Serey said she was humbled to take the reins and was excited for the year ahead.

“No doubt, I will learn a lot more this year, but you can be assured that I will work hard, focus on achieving practical outcomes and foster a strong teamwork so that we can continue delivering for our residents and ratepayers of today, while continuing our work towards creating Australia’s most liveable city for tomorrow,“ she said.

Cr Serey said her priorities would be on young people and their families, making Casey a safe and inclusive community, improving

transport, boosting the economy and making Casey the most liveable city.

“As the city’s youngest mayor, it is beholden upon me to give some special focus to Casey’s youth, making sure that our young people have the opportunities needed to grow and develop into healthy, positive, and productive citizens,“ Cr Serey said. "Issues affecting our young people and their families today and, in the future, will continue to be at the forefront of my decision making."

She thanked outgoing mayor Amanda Stapledon for "her hard work and making people with disabilities a special focus in her community work" and hoped to continue in her footsteps.

Residents win battle Cranbourne North residents were finally able to rejoice in their fight to keep their promised sports field at Tulliallan Estate in July.

The huge parcel of land next to a Cranbourne North primary school was causing nothing but heartache to residents.

It came after residents were furious with a developer who had back out on assurances the 6.8-hectare land at the heart of their community would be used for soccer and cricket grounds and other public open space.

Instead the developer opted to apply to subdivide the huge parcel of land into housing.

A petition, garnering more than 1200 signatures was launched by Tulliallan residents, demanding their promised sports field.

Casey Council and neighbours were in near five-year tussle with the developer in trying to resolve the matter however Casey Council announced in July it had now “reached an agreement” to purchase the land for sporting facilities.

“The respective lawyers are now getting on with preparing the necessary paperwork,” a statement from Council said.

“Council officers will now be able to focus on the design and building of the facilities on the 6.8 hectare site.”

Construction is anticipated to start next financial year in 2020-21.

Casey Mayor Amanda Stapledon said the purchase was a “great outcome” for the Tulliallan residents and the Casey community - a result council had “been working hard on to achieve.”

“While I cannot discuss the terms of settlement due to confidentiality, I would like to assure our community that this is a win-win for all parties involved and that it does not come at the expense of other projects planned across our city,” she said.

Lachlan celebrates the community's promised sports field. 193835 Earlier this year, Casey’s acting city planning manager Keri New indicated the issue was frustrating with negotiations having “broken down” with the developer Konann Pty Ltd in securing the Alisma Boulevard site.

In a council document from January, Casey Council stated it was prepared to pay up to $15 million for the site however the developer wanted double. .

Rebecca Hyland, who had launched a petition, garnering more than 1,200 signatures to keep their promised sports field, said the community was celebrating.

“If it hadn’t been the power of the people who knows what could have happened to the 6.8 hectare of land,” head petitioner Rebecca Hyland said.

“It’s so important to our community to have these active green spaces available to them,” she said.

Tulliallan School Council president Tara Hall said the school community was “over the moon“ with the council’s purchase.

“It’s certainly going to ease a lot of pressure on our school facilities; it’s going to be great.”

A father-daughter shopping trip to stock up for Halloween turned into a real fright when the pair returned home to have their car rammed by thugs who had been ransacking their Narre Warren South home.

Bruce Sayers had been out shopping with his 14-year old daughter on Saturday 12 October and upon arriving home to his England Walk home he found a BMW blocking his driveway.

Confused, Mr Sayers, 46, spoke to the female passenger who said: “Oh we’re looking for David, we’re going out.”

“To me that meant: Yeah OK, they’re lost’,” Mr Sayers said, still wondering where the driver was.

In the moments that followed, a man appeared from the back of the home, throwing boxes into the car and yelling to the passenger “we’ve gotta go, gotta go.”

Mr Sayers followed the car thinking it would come to an abrupt stop after being severely damaged. The getaway driver went down a dead end court and on their way back hit Mr Sayers’ car a third time.

“They’ve popped a tire and done a fair bit of damage,” he said.

The bandits got away with his daughters school bag, laptop, school uniform, dance uniform and one dance shoe. They also stole his handmade leather walled from Africa that had been passed on by his mother and an Olympic relay batton.

A culture of wheeling and dealing has infiltrated Casey Council and grown like an insidious cancer with no certainty of how deep or how wide it has spread. The IBAC inquiry is only investigating the most extreme examples.

On 17 December, with the prospect of government intervention looming large, the governance arm of council’s administration put forward a motion to relieve the councillors of their role in the decision-making process and replace them with a “Special (Planning) Committee”, selected entirely by the relatively new CEO, Glenn Patterson.

This was far from ideal. Unlike his beleaguered predecessor Mike Tyler, Glenn Patterson is still an unknown quantity yet to prove himself. Moreover, tucked away in the wording was a clause allowing councillors to dispense with the committee at any time.

Who proposed a takeover in the first place?

And why did Casey’s governance department recommend forming a committee with no details regarding size, make up, qualifications, transparency, powers, financial arrangements, checks and balances, or community input ramifications?

Even this document would have handed power to a faceless body accountable only to an already potentially compromised bunch of councillors who currently hold the balance of power.

But these same councillors promptly rejected this delegation model, and put up an even more dangerous version, cutting out the CEO and giving them unconstrained authority to select the “Special Committee” themselves.

In what can only be seen as an act of sheer desperation, some have gone one step further.

The blatancy of this suspect move serves only to illustrate the urgency of government intervention.

Replacing a democratically elected set of

councillors with a state appointed commissioner would be a last resort solution, but if the blemished apples in Casey’s barrel of councillors were to be removed, our council meetings would be unable to muster a quorum.

The south-east community was well and truly involved in the Christmas spirit, donating more than $12,000 towards Casey Cardinia Libraries (CCL) annual Christmas Charity Appeal.

From donations of gifts and non-perishable food items worth more than $10,000 to donations of cash, the 2019 contribution to the appeal exceeded that of previous years by several thousand dollars.

Partnering with eight local charities during the six-week campaign, the gifts and donations were distributed to help brighten up the festive period for those in need.

The charities included WAYSS, Barry Plant Emerald, Salvation Army Pakenham, Cranbourne and Casey North CISS, Hampton Park Community House and Transit Outreach Service.

"Our members have once again shown kindness and empathy at a time that can be

"It's great that our libraries can facilitate their generosity via this annual appeal."

But the work isn't stopping anytime soon, with Casey Cardinia Libraries announcing they'll commence fundraising for the current bushfire crisis, donating to the Gippsland Emergency Relief Fund.

"Public libraries do so much more than providing information and resources. Each day libraries can be seen building stronger and more connected communities," Mr Buckingham added.

"Through public campaigns such as our Christmas Charity Appeal and now our bushfire relief fundraising, libraries changes lives in so many ways."

Home-cafe brews a storm

By Taylah Eastwell Cranbourne is spoilt for choice when it comes to places to stop and smell the Arabica beans but a new cafe on Monahans Road brewed up all kinds of trouble between competitors last year.

Cafe owner Joe Zambranis was surprised to see cafe seating and flags pop up outside what appears to be a residential house on Monahans Road, opposite the shopping strip that is home to his own cafe, Joe’s Java.

Concerned, Mr Zambranis said he called the City of Casey to check the zoning on the property and ask whether it was appropriate for someone to set up “a cafe in a living room”.

Assured that the home-based cafe was indeed operating in a residential zone, he decided to take his concerns to A Current Affair, which aired its own investigation on 20 June.

and insisted throughout the ordeal that they have the correct permits and approval from the council and relevant health department.

The cafe isn’t allowed to re-sell food, having to produce everything onsite. The residential part of the house is also separated from the

business front of the home.

“This is why we do the coffee, sandwiches and little cakes. Everything is manufactured here,” owner Val Carasel said.

Caroline Bell, the City of Casey’s Manager Safer Communities, said that under Casey Planning Scheme - Clause 32.08 (General Residential Zone), a home-based business is classed as a Section 1 use which does not require a planning permit to operate.

“The premises at 66 Monahans Road has two current registrations, the hairdresser component is registered under the Public Health and Wellbeing Act 2008 and the food business is registered under the Food Act 1984.

Despite the cafe having councils approval, Mr Zambranis was considering his options, including potentially starting a petition to have Val’s Coffee and Desserts shut down.

$120,000 charity gift keeps pantry open A struggling food charity organisation that was almost forced to shut its doors got an early Christmas gift thanks to a generous $120,000 donation from a stranger.

BK 2 Basics Melbourne, a community food pantry, was told by council to shut up shop before August 28.

According to council the pantry, which was being run out of a residential carport, did not meet planning scheme requirements and had sparked complaints.

Without the help of Dandenong businessman Joe Calleja, founder Kelly Warren would have been forced to give up her beloved family charity.

Mr Calleja, 64, was touched by the charity’s services after he was born in war-ravaged Malta and grew up poor.

“He’s messaged me first and he turned up at the pantry and just said ’come on jump in the car we’re going to a warehouse’,“ Ms Warren said.

“Both of us went and he asked me where I wanted to go and I said ’around Narre Warren.’

“So he came down here and this is the first warehouse that we saw. He rang up the real estate and it was all done, deal within five minutes,“ she said.

Since moving into their new warehouse on

Vesper Drive on October 1, Ms Warren said the charity has been able to help up to 200 people each day, out of a factory that is 10 times bigger than their original residential garage.

Mr Calleja, who runs a Dandenong based steel distribution company, said he wanted to “give back to the community” and loves that he can drop into the warehouse and “know exactly where the money is going.”

“I’ve done the easy part, honest to God, that’s the best way I can describe it,“ Mr Calleja said.

Mosque gets green light Narre Warren North will be home to an Islamic mosque after a planning submission was controversially approved by Casey Council in July despite more than 800 objections.

Opponents of a proposed mosque in Narre Warren North said at the time they would take their fight to the state’s planning umpire declaring they will “look at every possible avenue to stop this.“ Neighbour Terry Ryan says the mosque was inappropriate for the rural area with hundreds of residents looking at seeking legal advice before taking the matter to the Victorian Civil and Administrative Tribunal.

It comes after Casey councillors approved plans for a mosque application behind a closed door meeting at Bunjil Place, leaving dozens of people stranded outside the council chamber on Tuesday 16 July.

TheSaarban Islamic Trust’s application for the proposed a mosque on Belgrave-Hallam Road in Narre Warren North received 859 objections.

Angry residents were forced to view a live broadcast of the meeting on a big screen in a room next door.

Protester Valentina Crnkovic said the decision by councillors was “predetermined” with members of the gallery threatened by security “so we can’t speak our minds.“ “They weren’t making a decision in there that was already made, we’re not dumb,” she said.

“element of Islamophobia at play.”

“There are a lot of people who have genuine concerns which are legitimate and they should

be heard,” he said.

“I definitely don’t want to generalise but I think it’s through the segment they are using these reasons as a cover for Islamophobia mindset.”

Casey deputy mayor Rosalie Crestani said the Islamic Council of Victoria was making comments in a “deliberate attempt to silence debate on genuine concerns of the residents.”

“Residents have said to me that regardless of the aesthetics, a large scale building is inappropriate for that site,“ the Rise Up Australia member said.

She added: “If some residents feel concerned about Islam, they have a right to voice them.“ A prominent South East businessman, Adam Sadiqzai, said Cr Crestani needed to be held accountable due to her “fear mongering” and “pre-determined bias.”

“She has (been) documented as saying she will vote against any mosque. She cites terrorism as a possibility,” he said.

“The mosque had ticked all the boxes in terms of the law, both state and local. They complied over and beyond to what the expectations were - and those were the words of the mayor.“ Mayor Amanda Stapledon said she respected the objections but considered the plans of the mosque based on its “planning merits.”

HP Boyz, of Hampton Park, will headline Empire R&B's bushfire relief fundraiser.

Rapping, running for relief

By Mitchell Clarke Narre Warren’s Empire R&B nightclub will team up with the mega popular HP BOYZ to host a bushfire relief fundraiser from 9pm on Friday 10 January.

With $12,000 already raised, all door proceeds from the night will be split evenly and donated to the Red Cross and CFA. Empire spokesman Carlo Paduano said these two charities were chosen after much consideration.

“After much investigation, we decided these two charities were the closest to the heart of the bushfires and being able to help people in need,” Mr Paduano said.

“Our thoughts and prayers remain with all the firefighters, families, animals and all others

that have been affected by the bushfires.”

Hampton Park rap group HP BOYZ will headline the night after approaching the nightclub with the idea of a bushfire relief concert.

“They wanted to do their first ever Melbourne show in the south east to raise money for the CFA and Red Cross, so we joined forces with them,” Mr Paduano added.

“And so together, HP BOYZ and Empire R&B booked a line-up of local south east artists from the Casey area to put on a show to raise cash.”

Rounding out the line-up is DJ Horizon, referred to as Australia’s best R&B DJ, famous for headlining Austereo’s RNB Friday’s.

He’ll join Melbourne producer and DJ Joel Fletcher, Rockafellas and ESG, who have all

agreed to perform for free.

Over 400 people have already purchased tickets and more than 1000 people registered their interest on the official Facebook event, where tickets can be purchased.

For those wanting to nurse their hangovers the next morning, Beaconsfield’s New Fit Personal Training will host a marathon training session from 8am on Saturday 11 January, with all funds being donated to the Victorian Bushfire Appeal.

NewFit owner Michelle Newman said the event was a fun way to raise much needed financial support to assist in the devastation caused by Australia’s current bushfire crisis.

“It’s my bit to help, to do the best I can to help others who are less fortunate than I am at the moment,” she said.

“I thought why not change our boot camp into something a little bit more meaningful?”

Participants will complete 42.2kms of rowing, riding, walking or running, and Mrs Newman has even vowed to participate.

“It’ll be fun, intense but rewarding and I’m going to participate with my clients as well, so it’ll be great,” she laughed.

Entry to the boot camp is $15, but participants can donate more if they’re in a position to.

“I don’t have a figure in mind, I’m just hoping to raise as much money as possible,” Ms Newman said.

“I’ve got some very generous clients and a few who can’t make it down here on the day have said they would match what we raise.”

IACC unites and educates in aftermath of bushfires

By Mitchell Clarke Across Casey and Cardinia, members of the Indian Australian Community Cooperative (IACC) have been working day and night to assist in the bushfire crisis.

The dedicated volunteers have sent six trucks through the Centre of Oneness, working with Sunny Duggal, Adarsh Kumar and Dk Tuli to raise a "huge amount" of cash donations to areas in East Gippsland ravaged by bushfires.

Co-ordinating local efforts, volunteer Aanchal Meshram opened her house to accommodate donations.

"Since we started this drive, we collaborated with many organisations, like the Centre for Oneness, Malayalee Association, local resident groups and local authorities," she said.

Under the campaign, they collaboratively collected supplies from locations in Cranbourne, Narre Warren and Pakenham.

But the campaign was also about educating the community on how to assist without getting in the way of volunteers on the ground.

"I know everyone wants to support but it is essential to know the best way to provide support," Ms Meshram added.

help. We have coordinated with them and sent them donations. But going there personally is dangerous."

The efforts from IACC have generated community awareness and reached more than 10,000 community members who were able to donate to various collection points set up by fire authorities, Salvation Army and other relief centres.

"It was not about IACC doing the collections, it was about generating awareness around how people can contribute," she said.

"We have a huge community and they wish to make a contribution but not many know how to get involved."

Since providing the information, a large amount of funds have been donated and the group is now encouraging others to register to volunteer with their local SES and CFA brigades.

"Anything we can do in our capacity to generate awareness and make a contribution, we have been trying our best to do it and it's great that we were able to reach out and send the message across 10,000 people in our community," Ms Meshram said.

"There is a massive amount of damage which has happened but if each one of us makes a small contribution, we can help to build country Victoria again."

Show up for all the fun The 120th Annual Lang Lang Show is back again on Saturday 18 January 2020.

There will be a full program of horse events including Shetland ponies, the majestic Clydesdales, miniature ponies and horses and stockhorses just to name a few. Pre-entry is required for all horse events, except the Fun Ring. Enter at showdayonline.com Please note, for this year only, all showjumping events will be held at the Lang Lang Showgrounds on Saturday 15 and Sunday 16 February due to a scheduling clash with another event.

The Beef Cattle Spectacular is always a great success and well worth a look.

There is a poultry competition and the dog show is always well attended with many breeds competing for the title of Champion.

Lang Lang now has a stud sheep competition to round off the farm experience.

The pavilion will once again be filled with art, photography, craft, cookery, produce and much more.

The Bubble Muffin Kids Cooking Club will be in attendance again this year. They run 4 free entertaining shows throughout the day for children aged between 5-11 years. They educate children about healthy eating in a fun way.

There are a host of other free activities such as an animal nursery, face painting, balloon twisting and a free art activity with the wonderful Bob Greaves.

Whiskey’s all the go-go

By Peter Quilty Punters have switched from ‘Scotch’ to ‘Whiskey’ in next Saturday night’s Group 2 Warragul Toyota Cup (460m).

Star sprinter Whiskey Riot catapulted to the head of betting markets following glamour greyhound Hooked On Scotch’s shock withdrawal from the final due to injury.

A winner of the $435,000-to-the-winner Group 1 Melbourne Cup at Sandown Park in late November last year, Whiskey Riot - trained at Rowsley by Anthony Azzopardi - has now been installed as $2.50 race favourite on TAB Fixed Odds.

Whiskey Riot is striving to become the third greyhound in four years to land the Melbourne Cup-Warragul Cup double - Aston Dee Bee (2017/18) and Ando’s Mac (2016/17).

Ironically, his close mate - leading NSW trainer Jason Mackay - achieved the feat with Ando’s Mac. Mackay stayed with Azzopardi during that Victorian campaign.

“It would be fantastic to emulate a very close friend… I’ve known him (Mackay) for more than 20 years,” Azzopardi said.

Azzopardi relocated to Victoria from Shanes Park, on the outskirts of Penrith in Western Sydney, in early 2016. And four years later says he has no regrets with the move.

a lot better; it gives young greyhounds every opportunity,” Azzopardi said. “I just like the whole setup, it’s the best state for greyhound racing; the top echelon.”

Azzopardi looked up to the heavens as Whiskey Riot crossed the line in the Melbourne Cup, dedicating the victory to his late father Charlie who passed away aged 69 due to lung failure in 2001.

And you can expect a repeat show of emotion if Whiskey Riot claims the $47,000-towinner Warragul Cup, which would increase his stakes to $686,810.

“Dad was my mentor in life and greyhound racing… He was an amazing man,” Azzopardi said. “We have nine siblings in the family (7 boys; 2 girls) and he loved us all.”

Azzopardi said his father “treated us all the same” and always emphasised the importance of a rock solid, close-knit family. “We could never go to bed with any family issues, it had to be resolved there and then.”

“He never stopped trying to teach us things, especially working hard for everything you get in life. His last words to me were, ‘I’ve had such a great life… I have a fantastic wife (Georgina)

and family. I’m dying a happy man’,” Azzopardi said.

“I wear a chain around my neck in his memory, and there’s not a day I don’t think about him. He was, and always will be, my hero,” he added.

A winner of 18 races (with 11 seconds and two thirds) from 38 starts, Whiskey Riot broke his G1 jinx when he defeated Western Envoy and his nemesis Hooked On Scotch in the Melbourne Cup. He had previously finished second to Hooked On Scotch in the Adelaide Cup, second to Sennachie in the Maturity Classic, and third to Get It Gizmo in the Topgun. He was also third to Hooked On Scotch in the G3 Shootout.

And Azzopardi says the seven-time group race finalist, who recently finished second to Western Envoy in the G2 Ballarat Cup, has become “a real professional”.

“You need to pick and choose your races, and practice makes perfect… He’s been constantly meeting the top brass and that’s improved him,” Azzopardi said.

He added: “He’s really in the race now…

He’s a real big contender. I’d like to see him win a few more group races and then retirement to stud beckons.”

In a treat for patrons, Richmond premiership forward Jack Riewoldt will be a special guest at the Warragul Cup meeting.

By Brendan Rees Self-defence classes are empowering Casey’s vulnerable women and disabled youth to feel confident.

Damien Chauremootoo and Emma Carr from Emma K Health have been training women, men, youth and disabled children through their EmPower Program for over a year at Casey Stadium.

Mr Chauremootoo, a qualified martial artist, said student numbers had grown and the program was helping shaping the lives of all of students.

“The program is proving to be a great success, with reported improvements in individual’s self-confidence, mobility and teambuilding capacity,” said Mr Chauremootoo said.

“The program specifically focuses on integrating health and fitness and body movement

with self-defence for people of varying disabilities.”

Strongly supported by director Chris Pallot and programs coordinator Matthew DePoilly, Mr Chauremootoo said the EmPower program also supported community integration and team building.

“EmPower is perfectly placed and has a clear vision for growth and expansion into the future with intention to spread kindness, awareness, empowerment and health education to all Australians,“ he said.
