Light show that wowed crowds

By Brendan Rees A beautiful lantern show lit up the night sky over Lynbrook on Saturday 5 October.

The annual Lynbrook Lantern Festival, hosted by Lynbrook Residents Association attracted crowds of more than 6,000 people at Banjo Paterson Park.

Hundreds of floating lanterns where release into Lynbrook Lake, and plenty of activities kept crowds entertained including pony rides, a drumming workshop, carnival rides, and a heart-stopping fire show Organiser Vanessa Watson said the event was a huge success with the biggest crowd attendance on record, adding they were blessed by balmy weather.

All money raised will go back into future community events.

Will fight charges On the police charges, Mr Richmond said the transactions were authorised by his four customers.

court that he faced extra pressure contesting two sets of prosecutors at the same time.

In setting the case down for a hearing, Mr Vandersteen found Mr Richmond was intelligent, articulate and understanding of the legal and factual issues.

Mr Vandersteen said Mr Richmond felt overwhelmed but "not to such a level that it would be unfair for (the two prosecutions) being heard together".

Mr Richmond was bailed to appear at a contest hearing at Dandenong Magistrates' Court on 11 February 2020.

An Officer man is fighting against charges of receiving more than $70,000 from four customers while purporting to be a licensed conveyancer in 2016-'18.

Hans Eric Richmond, 69, of Officer, was alleged to have acted as a conveyancer despite his conveyancing licence being cancelled by the Business Licensing Authority in 2013, a court heard.

He is pleading not guilty to five counts of obtaining property by deception and one charge of theft brought by Victoria Police.

Mr Richmond also contests eight charges

from Consumer Affairs Victoria for allegedly working as an unlicensed conveyancer and representing himself as licensed to four clients.

The alleged transactions relate to properties in Conway Court, Hampton Park; Alexine Street, Officer; Inspiration Circuit, Pakenham, and Batesford Road, Cheltenham.

Mr Richmond, who represented himself, told Dandenong Magistrates' Court on 8 October that the allegations were "unjust" and "baseless".

He had undertaken "administrative work", rather than conveyancing or "legal work", he argued.

Community News Lynbrook Hotel Community Contributions Fund The City of Casey is inviting eligible community groups who provide support services to apply for funds as part of the Lynbrook Hotel Community Contributions Fund.

Stink beats houses

By Brendan Rees A 41-lot residential subdivision next to the Hampton Park tip will not go ahead due to "offensive odours" and landfill gas risks, the state's highest planning tribunal has ruled.

The Victorian Civil and Administrative Tribunal (VCAT) upheld Casey Council's decision not to grant a permit for Beaconsfield based DSL Securities Pty Ltd on 26 September.

The council argued the proposal at 250 Hallam Road would result in residential development being within 500 metres of landfill cells at the Hallam Road landfill - with odours and landfill gas migration posing a risk.

The Environment Protection Authority (EPA), the Metropolitan Waste and Resource Recovery Group and Sustainability Victoria backed the Council's decision.

VCAT dismissed DSL Securities attempt to argue future residents in its proposed subdivision would not be exposed to any "greater risk of odour impacts" from the landfill as housing existed within 500 metres of the landfill and

100 metres of the concrete batching plant.

Joint-tribunal members Ian Potts and Peter Gaschk stated in their report while the landfill remained in operation, the odour impacts would be unacceptable and risks of landfill gas migration "cannot be properly assessed and managed."

"In our view, the evidence supports the case that there will be a very high likelihood that the current and future landfill operations will emit offensive odours beyond its boundary and beyond the nominal 500 metre buffer distance," they said.

Mr Potts and Mr Gaschk stated the existing residential areas around the landfill were impacted by odours "that are strong and often enough to generate a constant stream of complaints has been established in this application a matter of fact.

They also stated there was "no or very limited expectation" there would be a reduction in odour emissions until the final waste cell is capped" - which was estimated by EPA to be in about six to eight years.

The issue of existing residential developed areas near the landfill "do not justify further exacerbating this contextual and timing situation," Mr Potts and Mr Gaschk said in their report.

However, they stated if they were to be satisfied the "current and ongoing operation of the landfill could be managed in a manner that mitigated the odour risks, then DSL may have made out its case."

VCAT accepted noise impacts could be addressed through a 2.4 metre acoustic wall but not ideal "given the impact on visual amenity."

The tip has made headlines in recent months with neighbours at the Suez-owned tip saying they were fed up with the stench with EPA reportedly receiving hundreds of complaints.

A Narre Warren South man and his family moved away from the tip to escape the revolting odour earlier this year only to discover the smell was so bad his family were dry retching in the bathroom of their new home.

Man charged following collision A 19-year-old man has been charged in relation to a collision that killed two people including a Hampton Park man in the south-east.

It is alleged a Mazda 3 and Nissan Skyline collided on Ferntree Gully Road in Oakleight East about 8pm on Sunday 29 September.

A 21-year-old Hampton Park man was behind the wheel of the Nissan when he was killed almost instantly.

A 19-year-old Ferntree Gully woman, who was a rear seat passenger in the Mazda, was taken to hospital in a critical condition and later died.

An 18-year-old Box Hill man travelling in the back seat, was taken to hospital and remains in a critical but stable condition.

The Bayswater North man has been charged with culpable driving and negligently cause serious injury and will appear in Melbourne Magistrates' Court 2 October.

Detective Inspector Stuart McGregor, from the Major Collision Investigation Unit said high speed was a major cause in the fatal car crash.

Police swoop on cannabis plants A 41-year-old man has been arrested at the Narre Warren South property after police executed warrants on properties in the southeast, seizing more than two-hundred cannabis plants The Southern Metro Divisional Response Unit searched residential properties in Narre Warren, Narre Warren South, Hampton Park and Cranbourne West on Thursday 3 October and Friday 4 October.Police found 99 plants alleged to be cannabis in a house in Sweeney Road, Narre Warren.

One hundred and two plants were seized at a Warana Drive, Hampton Park address while 30 plants were discovered in a Shrives Road, Narre Warren South property.

The 41-year old man at the house has been charged with various offences including cultivating, trafficking and possession of cannabis.

He's been remanded to appear at Dandenong Magistrates Court on 21 October.

$27K in fraud withdrawals Police hope CCTV images will identify a man who they believe may be able to assist with their inquiries after money was fraudulent withdrawn in Casey.

Monash Crime Investigation Unit is investigating about $27,000 worth of fraudulent withdrawals from a bank account between 24-29 April.

The incidents were committed at multiple locations including Lynbrook, Hampton Park, Albert Park, Windsor, Carnegie, Oakleigh, Clayton, Mulgrave, and Rowville.

Not on our ‘green’ land

By Brendan Rees A Narre Warren North farmer says he and other residents fear their idyllic way of life is being threatened by a raft of big developments planned for the region.

John Rousseaux, who runs Angus cattle at his 20-acre property, said the community was on "verge of losing a beautiful piece of green wedge" right on their door steps.

"We are perplexed as to why so many proposals have been applied for in such a short period of time," he said.

He said residents had concerns their landscape would be destroyed by proposed developments including three primary schools, a secondary school, a large scale residence, and an expansion of Harkaway Hills College.

A child care centre has also proposed in Narre Warren North.

Mr Rousseaux is one of more than 800 objectors to a proposed mosque on BelgraveHallam in Narre Warren North which was recently given the green light by Casey Council.

Residents are now preparing for a VCAT fight.

"It could be a Bunnings or a service station ... it doesn't matter who or what the building is; it's the fact that it's a building in the middle of farmland," he said.

"I'm trying to farm the land and I don't know what's going ... I think that we are being taken for a ride.

He said the multi-million dollar developments went against the Narre-Warren North township strategy adopted by Casey Council which aims "to protect the non-urban areas of Narre Warren North, including the northern foothills and their associated environmental and landscape qualities."

"The farming rural aspect of this area, combined with Lysterfield Lake, makes this a very beautiful area for all to enjoy," Mr Rousseaux said.

Farmer John Rousseaux is concerned about developments proposed in Narre Warren North within the green wedge. 198690 Casey councillor Rex Flannery said the green wedge should be "left alone" but supported the building of a mosque in Narre Warren North.

He said had the objectors to the mosque raised concerns about the development of Harkaway Hills College on Abeckett Road he would've voted against the mosque.

"They're accepting of a school having congestion but they've got no tolerance for the congestion that the mosque may create," Cr Flannery said.

"You can't have it both ways," he said.

Casey anti-mosque campaigner councillor Rosalie Crestani maintained the mosque proposal would have a "detrimental impact" to the character of the semi-rural landscape.

Meanwhile Mr Rousseaux said the landscape had already been compromised with congestion.

Friends of the Earth spokesman Cam Walker said development occurring around the fringes of Melbourne was "developer driven."

"Continuous low density sprawl is consuming important farm land, open space and remnant vegetation. It is also putting large new

populations into areas that are not adequately serviced with public transport or essential community services," he said.

Casey acting manager of statutory planning and building services Nick Moore said residents concerned about planning applications within the green wedge zone could make a formal objection to council to "ensure that the community's concerns are taken into consideration."

In Mick’s honour

By Brendan Rees A future sporting hub in Clyde North is set to honour late Casey mayor Mick Morland OAM. City of Casey will pay tribute to the former popular mayor by naming an undeveloped reserve at 336i Grices Road, Clyde North the Mick Morland Reserve.

The site, which is located at a new estate and adjacent to the Cardinia Creek corridor, will be developed into a district level AFL/ cricket and netball facility.

The hub will include one oval, two netball courts, a multi-purpose community pavilion, cricket nets, car park, playground, shared path, landscape and public art.

Councillor Susan Serey, who fought back tears at a 1 October council meeting, said it was only fitting to honour Mick at the reserve "to celebrate his support of sporting clubs, promotion of participation, and his love of nature advocacy for the conservation located within his believed Edrington Ward."

The naming of the reserve has the support of Mr Morland's family, and council looked forward "to standing together with them" at the opening, Cr Serey said.

During the meeting, mayor Amanda Stapledon paid tribute: "It is a very emotion thing but if you look on the bright side there is just a positive outcome and a legacy that will remind us of Mick in years to come."

Mr Morland's widow, Kay Morland, said the family was thrilled his legacy would be honoured at the new reserve.

"A couple of weeks ago we sat down together and all voiced our thoughts, and everyone loves it; everyone thinks it's a really good idea," she said.

"It's a sporting facility which was also important for the family because that was one of Mick's passions."

It comes after Casey Council decided not to proceed with a proposal to rename Pioneers Park in Berwick as Mick Morland Reserve following a consultation period with the community who strongly supported retaining the current name.

Community members described Mr Morland as a dedicated mayor, and a "statesman" with a "heart of gold" and a family man who would be "sorely missed."

Mr Morland served six terms as councillor since first elected in 1992, including one stint in the top job with both Casey and the former City of Berwick. He also received an Order of Australia Medal in January 2016.

Council has spoken to Geographic Names Victoria to consider the support of the proposed name Mick Morland Reserve.

Council will also invite submissions from the community when it gives public notice of its intention to name the site.

Plans are underway for the future reserve and funding will be considered in council's 2019-20 capital works program.

Residents attending Buddhist Vihara Victoria in Berwick can now enjoy easier access to the community hub, with a new dedicated car park.

The hub won funding from the State Government's Pick My Project initiative after receiving 1,886 votes for their landscaping and car park project - the highest number for any project pitched in the state.

With a new tarmac car park and improvements to the surrounding landscape, visitors will now be able to easily and safely access the services provided by Buddhist Vihara Victoria.

Narre Warren South MP Gary Maas was proud to be a part of the unveiling of the improvements on behalf of the Minister for Suburban Development Marlene Kairouz, on Saturday 21 September.

Buddhist Vihara Victoria hosts a range of cultural and education services and acts as an important site for teaching and training for the Southern Metro community.

The location provides a variety of services, including the public library, meditation centre, and the Dhamma language school, which specialises in teaching the Sinhala language.

Mr Maas said the temple was a place where our "entire community can come together, and it is fantastic to know that the Pick My Project initiative can help more visitors make use of their valuable services."

Previously the site had no car park making it difficult to access due to muddy conditions in the winter and dusty conditions in the summer.

Push for new bus service

By Brendan Rees A not-for-profit group in Narre Warren helping improve the lives of young people has pleaded for a bus service to run along Victor Crescent.

A petition of 288 signatures was presented to Casey Council at a 1 October meeting from members of the headspace Narre Warren Youth Advisory Committee (YAC) who are calling for the bus stop.

In their submission to council, the petition said the nearest bus service was at Overland Drive at Fountain Gate Shopping Centre about a kilometre away, and 1.5km to Narre Warren railway station.

Workers at headspace argue this can often lead to people walking in the dark and in poor weather.

"The distance could be a deterrent for people having mental health issues getting support from headspace and other services in area," YAC representatives said.

Casey Fields to host the 2020 Casey Cup City of Casey has announced Casey Fields will host the 2020 Casey Cup - one of the biggest junior soccer tournaments which is expected to draw crowds of up to 10,000 people.

Held over three days from Friday 27 March to Sunday 29 March, it is anticipated at least 300 teams, up to 2,000 competitors and their accompanying persons, and officials, from Victoria and throughout Australia and overseas will be attending the event.

Conducted by The Australian Football Skool and supported by the City of Casey, the tournament is open to all age groups including U7-U18 boys, U7-U18 girl's teams and all abilities categories attracting up to 300 teams from local clubs, metropolitan Melbourne, country Victoria, interstate and overseas. Football Victoria qualified referees provided and medal and trophies for winners and runners up.

Casey mayor Amanda Stapledon was excited about the opportunities the event will bring to both participants and the wider City of Casey.

"This is a fantastic opportunity for young athletes to showcase their skills and enjoy Casey Field's outstanding facilities," she said.

"This helps us realise our dream for Casey Fields to be a venue for grass roots, premier and elite sports and large events like the Casey Cup. Being able to host such an outstanding event also fosters fitness, participation, health and wellbeing for our upcoming sporting stars.

"This event will bring together both local businesses and community groups, creating a wholistic outcome for the Casey community, and beyond."

Dale is a true unsung hero Berwick foster carer, Dale Harrison began fostering with his wife Mel in 2017. They both wanted to give children in need a new direction in life and have been fostering ever since.

They fostered *Jane for five months, and *Dillon for eight months, and at the same time, they have been fostering *Ashleigh, 11 and *Ben, 12 long term.

Things took a left turn in 2018 when Mel was diagnosed with cancer. It came shortly after their two foster children's biological mother passed away. Despite the distress, Dale and Mel supported the children through their mother's passing.

Things got much worse, and in November of 2018, Mel sadly passed away. For what must have been a harrowing time for Dale, he courageously continued to care for the children even after such tumultuous events. Dale had to not only cope with his grief, but the grief of the children's too.

"Losing my wife and coping with my grief, and the grief of my foster children was very challenging, but I had to go on to help stabilise the children's emotions," Dale said.

"I didn't know what to expect, I just had to deal with what happened day, by, day and one step at a time."

Even after the pain Dale went through, he still noticed the positives and the rewards through caring for *Ashleigh and *Ben.

"Seeing the kids change positively in their education at school, and their behaviours, really made me get through it. They now depend and rely on me like they're my own kids, and it's a nice feeling."

Fostering through agency Key Assets, Dale received full support and training.

"Key Assets gave me full support from the top down. I recommend anyone who's interested in fostering to contact Key Assets because they massively supported me through this."

The past few years for Dale have probably been the most challenging times in his life.

Still, Dale was determined to continue on with foster care when he saw the impact he made in the children's lives. They developed positively and he knew their trajectory in life had changed for the better. Dale fulfilled what he and Mel set out to do.

Dale's determination and commitment to the children did not go unheard. His efforts were recognised and he was a finalist for Carer of the Year at the 2019 Victorian Protecting Children Awards.

The State Government poured nearly $1.8 million from the Growing Suburbs Fund towards the project, with Casey Council contributing $2.2 million.

Sport and Recreation Victoria's Community Sports Infrastructure Fund provided $100,000 for the female friendly facilities as well as an additional $100,000 to improve the soccer pitches at the reserve from the World Game Facilities Fund.

Narre Warren North's athletes have a brandnew home, with the $4 million Jack Thomas Reserve pavilion officially re-opening on Saturday 5 October.

It comes after the reserve's tenant Berwick City, which is Casey's largest soccer club, had long suffered in a dull and cramped conditions in the 40 plus year-old pavilion with no separate change rooms for male and female teams.

The much-needed new pavilion features six unisex change rooms, two unisex referee rooms, a multi-purpose community room and undercover spectator areas.

President of the Berwick City Soccer Club Nicky Woodward, who was present at the launch on Saturday 5 October, said the redevelopment was a "massive achievement" for the club's 800 plus members which fields 56 teams of all ages.

"For the last two years we've had waiting lists for up to 200 kids and haven't been able to fit in," due to the facilities being stretched to its "absolute limits," she said.

"It's a huge thank you to council and the State Government in what they've done for us," Ms Woodward said, adding "It ticks all the boxes in our five year plan we had."

The club can now has six junior girl's teams, two senior women's team, and an all abilities team, she said. "It just means inclusion for everyone."

The new amenities will encourage more participation across the community by providing female-friendly amenities for players, referees and visitors.

Bandits have been caught on surveillance cameras trying to break into a new home being built in Berwick.

The intruders stole tradies tools and damaged two doors as well as double glazed windows at the Stylebawn Drive property, totalling about $50,000.

The owner, Susan Difabrizio has since hired a 24-hour security guard after the incident occurred about 4am on Thursday 26 September.

Ms Difabrizio said thieves forced the lock to a key safe at the site two days prior to the incident, stealing keys and a garage remote.

"We obviously changed the coding on the garage and changed all the locks on the house and they came back on the Thursday," she said.

"They certainly trashed the doors trying to get in but couldn't get anything open.

"It was a property they were obviously watching," she added.

Footage showed a female intruder holding what appeared to be a torch and a garage remote while another female and male also wandered the property.

The bandits tried to enter through a connecting door in the garage after driving what is believed to be a Ford Falcon 2006 model and a trailer into the driveway.

They tried to pull out fuses from a fuse box "obviously trying to turn off the cameras," Ms Difabrizio said.

Ms Difabrizio said she received a "big reaction" regarding names of suspects after posting the still images of the intruders on Facebook's Casey Crime Page.

The suspects names, footage, and a car number plate have been handed over to police.

Casey Crime Investigation Unit is investigating. Anyone with information is urged to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.

Push to upgrade rooms to bring the female friendly change facilities project forward in council's Capital Works Program, scheduled for 2023-24 at a cost of about $500,000.

He said works on a redevelopment of the social rooms and an extension including accessible amenities were recently completed at the reserve.

"We're working to better understand opportunities to further develop Kalora Park Recreation Reserve, including creating female friendly change facilities, and exploring funding options available to bring any further upgrades forward."

"Council has a priority list to upgrade change room amenities within existing active recreation reserve sports ground pavilions to become female friendly."

Mr Pattie said there were no time frames for further projects outside of the female-friendly change facilities upgrades, as no funding was currently available.

But added: "We're committed to undertaking these projects across Casey to increase the provisions for women in sport across the city."

By Brendan Rees Casey Council will go into bat for a sports club in Narre Warren to help upgrade some of its ageing facilities badly in need of repair.

Councillors recently voted at a council meeting calling on the State Government to allocate money towards making the change rooms at Kalora Park Recreation Reserve's pavilion more female-friendly.

Deputy mayor Rosalie Crestani successfully raised the notice of motion saying the upgrade plans at the reserve, which is home to the Narre Warren Football Netball Club, have "been a long time coming."

"They're one of the largest memberships for football in this area; it impacts so many," Cr Crestani said.

The club's president Stuart Stephenson said some of the facilities were dated and "keen to get any improvements we can."

"The change rooms are quite old and dilapidated, not really female friendly."

He said the club hoped to upgrade its

Magical moments as lanterns light up night sky

By Brendan Rees There was a feast for the eyes, performances, and dozens of stalls on offer for the bumper crowd that attended the Lynbrook Lantern Festival on Saturday 5 October.

More than 6,000 people were treated to balmy weather as they gathered to watch lanterns light up Banjo Paterson Lake at the annual event.

Now in its ninth year, Lynbrook Residents Association events manager Vanessa Watson hailed the event as a success, saying it was one of the biggest crowds on record.

"There were people everywhere you could look," she said, adding "we were very blessed with the weather."

As well as the painting of the lanterns there were pony rides, a drumming workshop, car-

nival rides, and a heart-stopping fire show.

Other activities included a free magic show, an inflatable maze, jumping castle, Draco the dinosaur and Star Wars characters, dancers and a kid's choir, and an animal farm.

There were also plenty of food stalls selling pizza, deluxe donuts, barbeque, fairy floss, popcorn, ice cream, and more.

Ms Watson extended her thanks to all the volunteers who make each year possible.

"Without them we would really struggle, they make a big difference."

Ms Watson said some people returned the next day to help with the clean-up, and collect the remaining floating lanterns.

"The cleanliness of our park for the ducks and the users obviously is paramount with any of our events," she said.

Their premiership victory against Narre Warren on Saturday - giving the club back-toback flags for just the second time in club history - was intense, finals footy laced with the right amount of class.

After a third premiership in four years, the word 'dynasty' is deservingly being bandied around, and for good reason.

The club has a stranglehold over the southeast region - they're relentless, driven by success and are always chasing their next challenge. It's the cornerstone of all successful sporting clubs.

While the weather may have been arctic in their 51-point win over Narre Warren, the Wickers put in a magical performance befitting of a champion team in the midst of a golden era.

From the superstar Travis Tuck, who came to the club with a high expectation that has

now culminated with a best on ground medal in a grand final, to their champion skipper Madi Andrews, dynamic forward Harry Money, gun midfielder Bryce Rutherford and reliable defenders Jo West and Michael Riseley, the Wickers possess remarkable star power.

"We pride ourselves on our relentless approach," Berwick coach Stewart Kemperman said in the aftermath of another premiership win.

Car show roars into town

By Danielle Kutchel This year's Akoonah Park Men's Shed Classics in the Park Car and Bike Show is set to raise the bar, with activities on offer for the whole family.

Now in its fourth year as an annual event, the Car and Bike Show on Sunday 27 October will bring together arts, market stalls, good quality food, raffles, activities and of course, outstanding cars, bikes and military vehicles for all ages at Akoonah Park in Berwick.

Akoonah Park Men's Shed members have been hard at work behind the scenes organising the event over the past few months.

A spokesman for the show committee said: "It's always a nice family day, even if not all family members are interested in cars and motorcycles as the Akoonah Park Market will also be on which offers plenty for everyone including food, clothes, plants and more.

"People often spend a couple of hours at the show. There are plenty of vendors and the live music is great."

The day will see talented live musical entertainers such as "The Sound of Them" take to the stage, while trade and sponsor stands display tools, 4WD equipment and tyres and much more.

Around 300 cars and bikes enter the show every year, including hot rods, vintage and classic cars and plenty of Harleys, and it continues to be a success, the spokesman added.

"This year we're expecting a lot more. The word has been getting around, and everyone is welcome regardless of whatever car or bike they have," he said.

The 1948 Tucker sedan has a distinctive third headlight known as the Cyclops Eye.

The 1938 E L 61 later became known as the “Knucklehead” because the rocker boxes looked like a human knuckle.

Participants can enter the car or bike competitions on the day to be in the running to win one of 14 trophies. Prizes are awarded in categories including best car and bike of the show, best European car and bike, best American car and bike and best Australian car.

This year a number of star attractions will be on display, including a 1938 EL 61 'Knucklehead' bike.

Known as 'knucklehead' because the rocker boxes look like a human knuckle, Harley Davidson officially adopted the name in response

to widespread public use.

The model is considered a major historic feat in American history with the basic design principle of this simple V twin motor surviving and hardly changed until the introduction of the twin cam engine in 1999.

Also on display will be a 1948 Tucker sedan, the most distinctive feature of which is its third headlight, known as the 'Cyclops Eye'.

This headlight would be activated at steering angles of greater than 10 degrees to light the car's path around corners. Only 51 of the Tuckers existed before production was abandoned due to numerous court cases. Remarkably 47 have survived and it is expected that one of those will be at the show.

Gates open at 8am. Entry is $10 for those displaying a car or bike, $5 for adult spectators and children under 16 are admitted free.

Mega Community Garage Sale It's time to snap up a bargain as Warneet-Blind Bight fire brigade gets ready for its 13th annual Mega Community Garage Sale on Saturday 19 October at 8am.

It's estimated more than 50 households will participate in this year's event on where they'll host their own garage sales while helping raise money for the brigade.

Brigade members will also be at the Blind Bight Community Centre car park selling bacon and egg rolls, car boot sales, raffle, coffee van and a community safety table with interactive activities.

A sausage sizzle and raffle will be held at the brigade.

A Casey resident has described the moment a driver "hurtled" towards her after an alleged stolen car wound its way through Hampton Park on Monday 1 April.

"I could see bits of car flying up into the air, like I think mirrors or I don't know; door handles, something like that," she added.

"There must have been so people just affected literally by the accident."

It came as police were led on a two-hour wild pursuit which began about 12.30pm after a four-wheel-drive was allegedly stolen from Cranbourne.

The vehicle was later set alight, police say, before the speedsters fled in a station wagon and later hijacked a ute in Hampton Park.

The ute crashed where police say the driver was seen getting out carrying a rifle, which was used to carjack a Ford ute in Carrum Downs.

Witnesses say they saw the vehicle drivdriv ing i on the wrong side of the South Gippsland Highway in Cranbourne.

Cardinia Highway Patrol arrested two men and a woman who attempted to flee on foot after their ute crashed into a truck on the South Gippsland Highway.

The driver, a 26-year-old male from Cheltenham, tested positive to methamphetamine and had his licence disqualified disqualified. He was charged with aggravated carjacking;

counts of obtain property by deception and eight counts of theft.

A 22-year-old Pakenham man was charged with aggravated carjacking, four counts of theft of a motor vehicle, arson, two counts of burglary, obtain property by deception, two counts of theft.

Both men were remanded to appear at the Melbourne Magistrates' Court on Tuesday 2 April.

A 21-year21-year-old Dandenong woman was charged with ttwo counts of theft of a motor vehicle.

She was bail bailed to appear at Frankston Magistrates' s' Court on 3 September.

King of musicals dazzles

By Brendan Rees A star studded cast of 42 talented children have wowed audiences in their hit musical performance of Disney's The Lion King Junior at Cranbourne Community Theatre.

Staged by charity group, Artzmartz Young Peoples Theatre, the wonderful extravaganza attracted nearly a thousand people during the six shows held from 3-6 October.

Production manager Marita Fayle said the performers aged seven to 18 were amazing, after dedicating hours in rehearsals.

"It was really evident in their performance because they're vocals were outstanding, their chorography was amazing."

Asanti Dance Theatre, Australia's leading African dance company held workshops to assist with their singing of the African language, while lioness characters were taught African ancestor and war dances.

"It has been an enormous undertaking by our young vocal director and kids did an amazing job," Ms Fayle said.

Artzmartz Young Peoples Theatre operate at Carrum Downs conducting musical theatre, acting for stage and vocal singing groups during the school terms. Enrolments are open for this term. The Mick Price-trained Octabello was a surprise winner in last year's TAB Cranbourne Cup. 186290 "We won't know until Thursday - I'll give her a little go round in the Cranbourne Cup, so Dwayne Dunn will ride her in the Cranbourne Cup." Price - a Caulfield-based trainer - will be relocating his stables to Cranbourne in the last quarter of 2020.

The Cranbourne Turf Club will once again hold plenty of exciting events across this week-

end, and will host its extremely popular ladies function on Friday night, with former Hawthorn champion Shane Crawford to host the event in support of the Breast Cancer Network Australia (BCNA).

For the second year running, all jockeys in the Pinker Pinker Plate will once again be wearing pink breeches.

There will also be plenty of free entertainment on offer for kids of all ages at this year's Cup meetings.

A new green rolls in at Blue Hills

By Brendan Rees A new seven-rink bowling green has been unveiled at Blue Hills Bowling Club in Cranbourne East, just in time for the Pennant season.

The club held an intraclub competition under blue skies to celebrate the re-opening of the synthetic green on Thursday, 3 October.

Bowling Club president David Millican said the club's 42 players were rapt with the stateof-the-art green.

"We're absolutely over the moon we got this new green ... this is as good as you are going to get," he said.

"We're looking forward to the new pennant season with the newest green in the whole region."

The project cost in excess of $100,000 and was completed in about a month.

Mr Millican said the old green was about 12-years-old since the village had opened, and was hard to play on.

"Over the time the sand has just worn away and the grass has been trodden down," he said.

"It was like playing on concrete, at least now it's like playing on a shorter grass. All the members are absolutely thrilled."

The green, which is only available through employees and residents of Blue Hills Residences, will open its doors to pennant players across the south east which kicks off in October.

The upgrade was partly funded by the bowls club, contributing $15,000, with the rest paid by the owners of Blues Hills Residences.

"We've got a much larger prize purse with the richest ever TAB Cranbourne Cup, given the recent $50,000 increase in prizemoney, and a further $20,000 prizemoney increase to the Inglis Pinker Pinker Plate," he said.

"The TAB Cranbourne Cup has cemented itself as one of the great country events during the Spring Racing Carnival and provides the Casey community the chance to enjoy the thrill of the Spring Racing Carnival close to home."

Opening day for Casey Saturday marked the opening of the Casey Softball season under picture-perfect skies. The grounds were in great condition, and the club celebrated the opening of its new clubrooms.

There were only five games played as the club had a number of juniors playing in a tournament in Adelaide, and a number of its Open members playing in the Australian Masters Games, also in Adelaide.

There was one game in the Social Ladies competition between Berwick Chickasaw and Doveton. Doveton, with a little more experience than Chickasaw, batted very well and won 21-10. Open Women's 2 also featured one game between Doveton and Berwick Cheyenne. Doveton started strongly, getting runs on the board, but Cheyenne finished well with the game ending in an 11-11 draw. Open Women's 1 saw Berwick and Chiefs United play a hard-fought game with the Chiefs the eventual winners, 11-6.

With two games in Open Men, Berwick Arapaho had a close game against Chiefs United with Chiefs winning 10-6, and in the second game the Casey Warriors were too strong for Cranbourne Asteroids, winning 7-0.

Oceanex will be a mare to keep an eye out for over the Cranbourne Cup Carnival weekend, with the Mick Price-trained horse looming as a genuine threat.

The 2019 carnival begins on Friday with the sixth running of the Inglis Pinker Pinker Plate, and ends with the headline event of the 2025-metre TAB Cranbourne Cup on Sunday which has a $50,000 increase in prizemoney to a total of $400,000.

Mick Price - who also trained 2018 winner Octabello in the Cranbourne Cup and Pakal in the 2013 Cranbourne Cup - told Star News that Oceanex is ready and raring to race ahead of an exciting weekend at the Cranbourne Racecourse.

"We're going to accept also in the Pinker Pinker Plate, because the Cranbourne Cup this year is going to be worth $400,000, and I think it will attract the best of what is going around at the moment," he said.

"So it may be a tough race for us, but we're keen to run it because it is black type, it is 2000 metres, she's ready to go at 2000 metres, she was Stakes-placed over a mile the other night when James McDonald rode her in the Stocks Stakes (the Four'N Twenty Stocks Stakes at Moonee Valley), so 2000 is a better journey for her.

"She's a better mare as a four-year-old as she was in the last preparation, so I think you've got to be optimistic with these better horses - she will only be having start number 10, so I'm happy with her, she's had a good prep, and it will suit her on a softer track.

"The horse is prepared to go in either race, obviously the Pinker Pinker is well suited - the Pinker Pinker obviously has no black type, so that is the reason why I may or may not run it, but if she draws horrible in the Cranbourne Cup, we'll have the Pinker Pinker as the back-up.

Bowls return NARRE WARREN BOWLS Winter sports are now over, their equipment stored away for another year, and bowlers are back on the greens.

Tuesday was the first day of the summer Pennant and Narre Warren had three teams competing in the midweek on the first day of competition. Narre had two wins and a loss.

Division 2, at Burden Park, was the unfortunate loser. Alan Mark, Judy Naughton, Joe Selfridge and Colin Groom was the bright note winning 23-11, while Keith Mark, Wilma Haringsma, Reg Johnstone and Wilma Stevenson (14-25) and Eric Sydenham, Wally Finlayson, Geoff Ampt and Jim Millar (16-30) went down.

Narre Warren (1) 2-53 lost to Burden Park (1) 14-66.

Division 4 travelled to Berwick and had a close four-shot win. Arthur Fitt, Nancy Pugh, Paul McNamara and Brian Fraser won by four shots, 25-21 and Stan Bulmer, Truus Henneman, Jos Van Hout and Glen Cadman won by one shot 20-19 while Les Clement, Pauline Kempf, Joe McGuire and Peter Groom went down by one shot 18-19.

Narre Warren (2) 14-63 defeated Berwick (5) 2-59.

Division 6(a side) was at Fountain Gate for a handy seven-shot win against Cardinia Waters.

Len O’Brien, Brian Nicholls and Rose Rasmussen won well (26-12) while Pam Uren, Janice Moran and Enid Gibb went down 16-23.

Narre Warren (3) 12-42 defeated Cardinia Waters (3) 2-35.

The weekend saw the start of the rest of the Pennant. With four teams competing, Narre Warren had three successes. Again, Division 3 was the losing team at Edithvale. Reg Young, Philip Howard, Cam Lee and Zak Storm were the only winning rink (21-9), while Eric Sydenham, Wally Finlayson, Colin Groom and Jim Millar only just lost (15-16). Division 5 was also at Fountain Gate, and had a comfortable 24-shot win over Carrum.

Ernesto Vergara, Paul McNamara, Peter Castricum and Craig Moore was the highlight winner (32-14) while Darren Moore, Les Clement, Geoff Ampt and Glen Cadman won 23-17, and Bill Sheehan, Rose Rasmussen, Jos van Hout and John Zanon scraped home 26-25. Arthur Fitt, Jnice Moran, Wayne Grimsel and John Uren went down 18-19 on the last end.

Narre Warren (3) 16-99 defeated Carrum (2) 2-75.

Division 7 also played Carrum, but at Carrum, and came home with a win. Len O’Brien, Jacqueline Moody, John Green and Brian Fraser had a great day winning 31-9, while Diane Peterson, Steve Hyam, Brian Nichols and Luca Klarica helped the scoreboard with a 26-15 win. Dawn Baker, Peter Wilson, Dermot McConville and Graham Peterson went down 10-21 and Toa Retzlaff, Truus Henneman, Rudi Pompe and Laurie Baker also went down, 1927.

Narre Warren (4) 14-86 defeated Carrum (3) 4-71.

Perfect start for Cranbourne Pennant bowls resumed on Saturday and Cranbourne got off to the best possible start with every team a winner.

The top two Division 2 sides played at home against Berwick and South Oakleigh with head coach Lyn Quigg overcome with excitement after the win, saying: "An excellent start to the season with every Cranbourne bowler fighting hard all day and contributing to the gameplan, giving Cranbourne a great first up victory."

The third side played at Mulgrave, returning home with an excellent win while the fourth side defeated Berwick away, which ended a great day of bowls for the club.

SIDE 1, DIVISION 2 Playing at home, skip Frank Byrne was very pleased with his team mate Brian Biasci who played faultless bowls all day - helping the rink win by 17 shots and setting up victory against Berwick by 33 shots.

A fitting tribute to Ross

By Nick Creely It wasn't the start that Casey-South Melbourne was hoping for from an on-field perspective.

But the opening round of the Victorian Premier Cricket season was about way more than just what happened on the turf at Casey Fields - it was about honouring a club great who contributed so much to the club, and ensuring his legacy would not be forgotten.

Only 30 minutes prior to the Swans taking to the field, the club unveiled a plaque for Ross Hibbins in the newly named 'Ross Hibbins Room' at the club, with the former club president and much-loved cricketing administrator in Victoria passing away after a battle with cancer earlier this year.

Both the Swans, and their opponents, Prahran, honoured Hibbins by wearing black armbands and holding a minute's silence on the ground, a fitting tribute to man that gave so much to cricket, and Casey-South Melbourne.

Swans coach Brian Keogh said it was a great tribute to Ross and his family, and praised those who came out to pay their respects.

"It was a great celebration, an excellent turnout with people from all over - Amanda Stapledon was there, Cricket Victoria had a number of senior officials there, Kate (Ross' wife) spoke beautifully as she always does, and lots of family was there," he said.

"I thought it was a great tribute to him."

Keogh said that the players prior to the game were honoured to be a part of a tribute to a person that meant a great deal to all involved at not only Casey Fields, but also Victorian cricket in general.

"All of the guys had great respect for what Ross did over a long period of time, and a lot of the guys knew Ross for a number of years," he said.

"I think the way the players handled themselves was great, and I give great credit to Prah-

But on-field, the Swans got off to a tough start to the season- albeit without two of its stars - after being sent in by the True Blues.

The Swans were lighter in the batting department with overseas skipper Luke Wells not yet available, while middle-order gun Lachie Sperling was also missing from the side with a hamstring strain.

Losing openers Dev Pollock and Ryan Quirk early, before a horror run-out saw Joel Mitchell walking back to the sheds, the Swans needed to rebuild - and quickly - to have any chance of posting a competitive total.

But Matt Wilcox's stunning spell of 4/8 off 10 overs proved too hot to handle, with the Swans bundled out for just 45 in the 32nd over, with Dylan Hadfield top scoring with 14.

The Swans did enjoy some success with the ball before the True Blues got the runs in the 16th over, with Nathan Lambden (1/8) skittling opener Adam Bull off the second ball, and taking a further two wickets to at least take some confidence with the ball.

Keogh said that despite his side having a poor day, the opposition made it difficult to get any flow going with the bat due to their discipline with the ball.

"I thought Prahran bowled very, very well, their attack was excellent - they hardly bowled a bad ball in 30 overs, they were a class attack," he said.

"And to be fair, and it's not hiding from it, it was a good toss to win - we would have bowled if we won the toss, but clearly it wasn't a 45run wicket either, and the batters know that, and have acknowledged that.

"It's Round 1, we have to put it behind us - the theme this week is to back our own strengths, we have a strong batting side, and we know we had a poor day.

"It's a long, long season, we've got a hell of a lot of cricket to play out, and we've had one really poor day, but we know we're better than that."

Keogh acknowledged that Wells is unlikely to be available for Saturday and is waiting on his visa to be approved, while Sperling could be three weeks away with his hamstring injury.

There are changes, however, expected to be made this Saturday, with both Ryan Quirk and Josh Dowling missing this weekend due to a wedding, and Keogh said that there are several players who could come into contention, with Chris Benedek and Aaron Fernando, as well as recruit Nick Huttley, impressing in the twos.

"There is four players out of our first XI this weekend - regardless of those guys going out, we believe we've got the depth within the club," he said.

"It creates opportunity for some guys, so there's plenty knocking on the door this week."

The Swans will be desperately looking to bounce back when they venture out to the Geelong Cricket Ground to take on the Cats on Saturday.
