The kids transformed into superheroes and fairies for the day as they read their favourite stories and made face masks and hats.Vice principal Colin Price said the school has a big push on literacy and reading at the moment. It seems as though Cardinia Shire Council aren't listening to the deafening screams to build a Kmart in the municipality. At this stage, Pakenham won't be home to the popular discount department store, despite the hype surrounding a proposed complex at the vacant site in front of Cardinia Life. The complex was set to feature the Kmart along with Coles, a cinema, medical centre and various speciality retail and food/beverage outlets.
As recommended in council's town planning report, the proposed use and development of the land is contrary to the purpose and objectives of the Cardinia Shire Planning Scheme and therefore "should not be supported". The recommendation has angered the community, with Kmart fanatics taking to social media to voice their despair. "Well then I'll simply deduct the costs of the extra travel from (council's) ridiculous rates invoice," one social media user commented. "Good on you Cardinia Council. Just keep 12425088-FA36-19

Hall stays at heart of life By Andrew Cantwell The Officer community was put to the test last week to see if it was more than a collection of rapidly expanding housing estates - to see if there was still the beating heart of a community in what was once a quiet country town. At issue was the Officer Public Hall and whether Officer residents would rally to reform its management committee, which - through personal circumstances and people moving on - was no longer functioning as it should. And because the hall is on Crown Land managed by the Department of Environment, Land, Water and Planning (DELWP), the danger was that the department could be forced to close the hall. At a special meeting called Wednesday night 21 August - with an overcast sky and cold wind blowing - Officer's community spirit rose to the challenge. It wasn't the biggest meeting the hall has ever seen, with just over a dozen attending - but it was perhaps the most significant in a number of years. Chaired by Mike Petrovich, of the Officer Community Association, and addressed by Sarah Wordsworth, from DELWP, the duties of the committee were listed briefly and clearly. And when the invitation was given to fill out nomination forms, the people responded - hesitantly at first, but committed none-theless. The hall is modest but well used, by dance groups, a theatre group and a church group among others, and even for weddings and parties on occasion. A karate class was just finishing up as interested residents milled outside waiting for the meeting time to tick around. Mike Petrovich said the Officer Community Association used to meet there, too. But

Regular bookings for the loyal following is a good problem to have for the new committee, once formed. But as the rapid growth continues, booking availability could also be problem for the future.
No doubt, Officer's community spirit will rise to that challenge, too. Ranges Ward councillor Brett Owen attended the meeting, and said afterwards he heartened by the community's response. "It was a great turnout. I was rapped to see over 11 members of our community put their hands up to be on the new hall committee'" he said.
"What a fantastic result which will ensure that the hall will continue to be available to the community. "Council will support the new committee with training opportunities, assistance with meeting procedures and future grant opportunities. "I look forward to working with the new committee."

Tiny Hearts has also compiled statistics from participants, illustrating the importance of teaching the critical first aid skills. After the course, 98 per cent of parents said they felt more confident to act effectively in an emergency. Almost 50 per cent reported that they had used their acquired infant and child first aid knowledge within six months of undertaking the course. Narre Warren's Shelby Cooke, who performed CPR on her choking two-year-old daughter while paramedics rushed to their home, stressed the importance of first aid training. She believes that had she not received the course through her workplace, her daughter may have suffocated. "I still owe everything to having those skills," she said. "The more people that are equipped with them, the less tragedies we're going to see with children, babies and toddlers. "It's such a frightening thing to go through - so you need to be prepared." The free sessions will be held across the region, including at Beaconhills College, in Pakenham. Topics covered will include choking, fevers, convulsions, burns, drowning, bleeding, caring for an unconscious person, bites and stings and head injuries. A lifesaving Pakenham-based venture, spearheaded by a paramedic and a teacher, has received a federal cash injection to provide free first aid training throughout Melbourne's south-east. Tiny Hearts - founded by sisters Rachael Waia and Nikki Jurcutz - will arm 1800 local parents and carers with the skillsets required to save their children in the event of an emergency. In a regional first, 300 parents are also set to be trained bilingually, catering for Chinese and Afghan communities. Their journey began in a garage, but Tiny Hearts now has a headquarters in Pakenham's Industrial Park - proving that business success is attainable under the most challenging circumstances. Ms Waia, a former educator and volunteer first responder, was first aid trained when she was just 15 years old. She is determined to share her vital knowledge with as many parents as possible. "I've got two kids of my own and I know what it's like when they choke and when they're really sick," she said. "Because we've got such a good report built with our parents, we get a lot of feedback where they say, hey, you literally saved our babies' lives. "I love what I do - waking up and making a difference." Tiny Hearts worked in conjunction with the South East Melbourne Primary Health Network to secure the federal grant. The organisation also hopes to reduce the number of inappropriate admissions to the emergency department and create a better

Moving violations By Cam Lucadou-Wells A 24-year-old driver in an unregistered V8 ute has sped down the wrong side of Princes Highway, Pakenham during a mid-afternoon police pursuit, a court has heard. Dean Nathan Russo, a repeat offender of Pakenham, pleaded guilty to speeding away from police at a BP service station next to the Pakenham police station about 2.52pm on 31 March. Despite police activating their lights, Russo's red Holden ute "lost traction" at the servo and drove up to 104 km/h west along the highway. He crossed over to the wrong side of the road, headlong into mid-afternoon traffic as he crossed the Cardinia Road signalised intersection. Though he escaped at the time, Russo was arrested later that day.
He initially told police that he'd been bashed and robbed of the ute while trying to sell it. He claimed he'd walked home from Cranbourne with no socks and shoes after the 'robbery'. Russo also pleaded guilty to disqualified driving in Pakenham in December. His car was impounded for 30 days after police intercepted him. On 27 August, defence lawyer Nick Power submitted for Dandenong Magistrates' Court to take into account Russo's intellectual disability, ADHD and possible personality disorder. A jail term would serve "some purpose" but in other aspects would be "counter-productive", Mr Power said. "He's still maturing, though slowly. "All hope is not lost for Mr Russo."
Magistrate Jack Vandersteen likened Russo's behaviour to "discharging a firearm in a public place". It was fortunate that other drivers took evasive action, he said. "Usually, drivers don't give a sideways glance (as they enter a traffic light-controlled intersection)." He noted that Russo at the time had been on a community corrections order for dangerous driving while pursued by police. "What do you do with him?" he pondered. "The driving until police lost sight of him was incredibly dangerous." Mr Vandersteen said though there was a risk of harm in custody, Russo was in "prison territory". His sentence was deferred for a hearing at Dandenong Magistrates' Court on 29 October.

There's been another case of suspected dog baiting in Pakenham after a suspicious chunk of meat was found in a residents backyard on Saturday. The attempted poisoning of Blue Heeler Scrubby is the latest of several incidents this year in the area. Dog owner Tarni Bailey was left shocked that someone allegedly attempted to poison her beloved pet. Ms Bailey says she found a piece of raw, discoloured chicken in her backyard on Thomas Street, along Henty Street on Saturday morning. "Luckily my puppy was still asleep and didn't notice it. I only live with my dad so I asked him if he had given it to our dog in which he said he hadn't," she explained. "It hasn't happened before, although we have had someone shining a torch at our dog over our fence late at night while we were home but they ran off once my dad caught them. "I feel angry and annoyed that someone has attempted to poison my dog. He's loved by me and my family so dearly." Overnight on Saturday, Ms Bailey's dad woke to the sound of the property's side gate being opened. "Our gates are too heavy for the wind to blow open. Our dog jumps on them sometimes and even then they don't open. I struggle to open them some days." Ms Bailey doesn't understand why Scrubby was potentially targeted as he "doesn't bark much, only when new people are over as he is protective". "I'm concerned that it may happen again and next time he won't be so lucky," she added.

A Berwick woman was left shaken after her vehicle was rear-ended and the alleged offender driver drove off without swapping details on Thursday 8 August. The woman said she was turning left onto Clyde Road from Bermersyde Road in Berwick when her black Nissan Tiida was pushed into oncoming traffic at 8.48am. The other vehicle was described as a white 4WD with a white bullbar. Before the 4WD allegedly took off, the woman attempted to make verbal contact with the driver but the driver denied their involvement in the incident. The woman is urging witnesses to contact Narre Warren Police Station on 9705 3111. She is also appealing to any vehicle repair companies in the Casey/Cardinia regions that may have seen the vehicle described.
Vandals strike BMX club Casey BMX has had to cancel events after heartless vandals smashed an electronic box used to operate their entry gate. Members of the club at Casey Fields have been left gutted by the senseless act. Club president Adrian Bognar said nothing was stolen but two components of the gate had been "smashed to pieces". He said it's believed the incident took place sometime between Sunday afternoon and Monday afternoon of 25-26 August. "What we believe may have happen is that these people have tried to diffuse the gate and put a crack into it," Mr Bognar said. "What they don't understand is: we take some of the stuff out and it's not going to work without those components. "Then they've just decided to smash a few bits," he said. "It's something we've got to reorder now ... without one component it's hopeless." Mr Bognar said he believed Casey Council may cover the costs for the repair which is estimated to be $3,000. He said a key part called the brainbox was smashed open and found dumped at a nearby path. "It was damaged so I'm not sure if that still works or not," he said. Mr Bognar said it was a big inconvenience: "We can't run the gate at all. We can't run any of our club meetings or any of our open gate nights which generate the income for us." Casey Council has been contacted for comment.

Growing need for respite By Brendan Rees Carers looking forward for a chance to have a break at a new respite service in Berwick may face a longer wait - despite its doors opening just weeks ago. Services have begun to fill fast at the facility, which opened at the beginning of August. “Our Casey Cottage in Berwick is now establishing a waitlist,” Kimberley Donovan, chief executive of 39Plus, said. The non-for-profit organisation at Cardinia Road, which also has a centre in Rosebud, offers 24/7 support services for older people, people with disabilities, and their carers. There are six beds at the Berwick site, with a total of 14 flexible respite beds available across the two locations. When asked why there was such a high demand, Ms Donovan said: “Our unique service model offers flexibility and a genuine focus on the individual.“ “The statement ‘I wish you offered this type of care in more locations’ is echoed frequently by a large number of our customers and carers,“ she said.
“Our customers become part of an extend family and the aesthetics of our service environments achieve a home away from home feel.“ Ms Donovan said if there were more resources available 39plus could fill respite homes across the state as the option of residential aged care did not suit the needs of everyone. More funding and affordable properties from which to run their services would help alleviate high demand for clients, she said. LaTrobe MP Jason Wood encouraged the centre to apply for a grant through the National Disability Insurance Agency’s (NDIS) Information, Linkages and Capacity Building program. Mr Wood said the program was unique in that it is for all Australians with disability, not just NDIS participants. “I want to see people in La Trobe having more opportunities to participate in and contribute to the community and the NDIS funding will go towards building inclusive communities right across our country,” he said. “I would encourage all eligible organisations in La Trobe to apply today.“ Meanwhile the centre has hit the ground running to prepare for its official launch.

Police body cameras roll out in Casey Casey police will be equipped with body worn cameras as the roll out to the area begins from next week. More than 11,000 cameras will be deployed by 2020, with the Casey area next on the list to receive them, which includes Endeavour Hills and Narre Warren police stations. A body worn camera is a tool worn on a police officer's uniform which is used to record video and audio footage.
Assistant Commissioner Russell Barrett said the body worn cameras are a boost to police capabilities in the area. "The introduction of body worn cameras is expected to deliver improved community safety, enhanced evidence gathering, increased police safety and accountability," he said. "The initial pilot we conducted in April 2018 showed us that camera usage policies, infrastructure and training for police had
worked well and police were comfortable using the technology within their first one or two shifts. "Given the pleasing results of their function along with the overwhelmingly positive feedback from the community, we are in the process of rolling the cameras out to more officers. "We are pleased to be expanding the body worn cameras to more officers, with the aim to
have 11,000 general duties police and Protective Services Officers equipped one by 2020." AC Barrett said police officer would undergo regular training which includes the use and functions of the body worn camera. From next week, body worn cameras will start to be used by Casey general duties and highway patrol police officers of the rank of sergeant and below.

Hoons tear up park By Brendan Rees An angry resident says he's fed up with fourwheel-drive vehicles tearing up the track at Narre Warren's Bayview Park. George says the park cops a "weekly trashing" by hoons - and has called on Casey Council to fix the issue. "We taxpayers have spent millions rehabilitating the park and yet every week more damage is done," he said. "I don't know why they let it happen." According to George, who did not wish to give his surname, people often broke in via a fence off Brundrett Road. "I have rung the council several times to no avail and recently tried to report a group of youths breaking down a fence but the receptionist wouldn't even write down their rego, telling me to call the police," he said. He said hoons came dangerously close to gas pipes and communications facilities. "I can see them from my house ... tearing around at night," George said. "It looks like only a catastrophic interruption to vital infrastructure in Bayview Park will get Casey council out of their ivory tower to stop the weekly trashing." Deputy mayor Rosalie Crestani said senseless damage to the park was frustrating and council was looking at ways to curb the behaviour. "We're doing our best at council ... the park is very big - we're trying to look at ways to sort that out." She said the recent launch of 1001 steps at

I hope that they can also provide the fire department with a brand new state of the art building somewhere else on Clyde Road and move them and also give the Little by Little coffee shop a good payout or find somewhere really fantastic to move them. That way they can knock them both down and provide much needed parking for all of us that cant get a car park for the train after 7am. Janine Kimberley: No foresight at all, should have been done with the duplication, now will cost more than it would have then. The traffic there is horrendous at the best of times, it will be worse while this goes on. Peter Douglas: The worst. Lost count of times - copping the train crossing after already sitting at the red lights for five minutes. Friday thumbs up! A labour of love By Danielle Kutchel When David and Lauryn Jordan decided they were ready to have a baby, they knew it wouldn't be an easy journey. Mrs Jordan was born with Mayer-Rokitansky-Küster-Hauser Syndrome, a condition that meant she was born without a uterus. Undaunted, the couple went through two rounds of IVF that resulted in three viable embryos. The next step was to find a surrogate, so they joined the Australian Surrogacy Community Facebook group to explore their options. Surrogate Sarah got in touch with them and the trio gradually got to know each other through online messages before finally meeting face to face at the Australian Surrogacy Conference. "The easiest way to describe it is that it's like dating, getting to know her, her husband and her kids," Mr Jordan said. "We would go to each other's houses and chat and get to know each other, which was a really valuable and important part of the process. "You need to lay the foundations and work out each other's values to see if it's going to work." Legally, the Jordans were unable to openly ask Sarah to be their surrogate; they were therefore overjoyed when she made the offer
to them one night in Canberra, where she and her family live. There were yet more hurdles though, including individual and group counselling sessions, psychological tests, legal advice and finally a submission to the Patient Review Panel - all part of the surrogacy process. Once they were given the all-clear, the Jordans transferred an embryo to Sarah. Unfortunately, it miscarried at 10 weeks; but the next embryo was more successful. The pregnancy was "uneventful", Mr Jordan said, with everything happening as it should, and the Clyde North-based couple made every effort to get to Sarah's appointments interstate. "She was so respectful of us too and included us in the milestones like the first kick and how she was feeling," Mr Jordan added. The birth earlier this year was "one of the best experiences of my life", he said. He and Lauryn were allowed in the room with Sarah and her husband in an experience that he will never forget. Their daughter was born healthy and well and given the name Everlie. Mr Jordan said Sarah, her husband and her children are considered "part of the family", and they plan to tell Everlie the "absolute truth" about her birth. "We described it to Sarah's kids as 'Lauryn doesn't have a house in her tummy', so we'll

Sporting win for community Cranbourne West is celebrating after a new $7 million sporting precinct officially opened its doors to the community. Volunteers turn yellow By Brendan Rees Alisha Hill would do anything to raise money for cancer research. The Clyde resident volunteered for the Daffodil Day Appeal where she and other volunteers held a fundraiser stall at Cranbourne Park Shopping Centre on Friday 23 August. "I lost my nan to cancer and also my boyfriend's father," she said. "I raise money throughout the year and do different fundraisers myself to help the Cancer Council but I just thought I could give my time and help out at the stall."
They raised $1376.40 through the sale of daffodils, pins, pens, key-rings, magnets, footballs and donations. "A lot of them just actually donated money; didn't want to buy any merchandise ... which was really nice," Alisha said. This year, Daffodil Day celebrates 33 years of turning Australia yellow, with Cancer Council Victoria aiming to raise more than $800,000 for cancer research, and recruit 1800 volunteers to staff around 220 sites on Daffodil Day. A Casey resident has described the moment a driver "hurtled" towards her after an alleged stolen car wound its way through Hampton Park on Monday 1 April.

It came as police were led on a two-hour wild pursuit which began about 12.30pm after a four-wheel-drive was allegedly stolen from Cranbourne. The vehicle was later set alight, police say, before the speedsters fled in a station wagon and later hijacked a ute in Hampton Park. The ute crashed where police say the driver was seen getting out carrying a rifle, which was used to carjack a Ford ute in Carrum Downs. Witnesses say they saw the vehicle drivdriv ing i on the wrong side of the South Gippsland Highway in Cranbourne.
Cardinia Highway Patrol arrested two men and a woman who attempted to flee on foot after their ute crashed into a truck on the South Gippsland Highway. The driver, a 26-year-old male from Cheltenham, tested positive to methamphetamine and had his licence disqualified disqualified. He was charged with aggravated carjacking;
counts of obtain property by deception and eight counts of theft. A 22-year-old Pakenham man was charged with aggravated carjacking, four counts of theft of a motor vehicle, arson, two counts of burglary, obtain property by deception, two counts of theft. Both men were remanded to appear at the Melbourne Magistrates' Court on Tuesday 2 April. A 21-year21-year-old Dandenong woman was charged with two t counts of theft of a motor vehicle. Warriors up for the fight By Russell Bennett Simo Pajdic's Division 2 women's side will be looking to create Pakenham Warriors Big V basketball history this weekend as they search for their maiden championship. And they know just what they have to achieve to get there, having been taught a lesson in grand final intensity by their Melbourne University Black Angels opponents on Saturday night in game one of their grand final series, 75-47. Fortunately for Pajdic's outfit, they can move on quickly from game one with the second - and potentially third - games of the bestof-three series fixtured for Saturday night and Sunday afternoon respectively at 'The Colosseum' at Cardinia Life in Pakenham. Pajdic admits that his side was thoroughly outplayed in game one, but was quick to add that his group more than has the potential turn that result around quickly - having already defeated the Black Angels twice this year, including as recently as the qualifying final - 71-61. "We let them put up a few more points than we should have (in game one of the grand final series) but we didn't do an awful job defensively," Pajdic said. "Offensively we were just a bit lethargic. "From a coaching perspective we'll do some scouting and a little bit of analysis - just to make sure we've covered off on everything and haven't missed anything too glaring. "But from a playing perspective, it was just one of those losses where the best thing might not be to analyse it too heavily. It might be to just move on." Pajdic spoke about the non-negotiables he and his coaching staff need to see from the players this weekend. "It's as simple as just coming to play with the right mindset, and being on the front foot," he explained. "They dictated the game to us and we just played second fiddle and were on the wrong end of some officiating calls which were as a direct result of us playing catch-up. "We were reaching because we were getting beaten - just things like that. It's about coming

amount to being a history-making Warriors group. But the job isn't done yet. "I'm really proud of the girls to embrace what we're doing as a collective," he said. "They're giving something up to be part of something a little bit bigger than themselves at a club that's really trying to further female participation and talent. "Melbourne Uni is a great team and has been a powerhouse in this division for three
or four years now. They're really decent, but we've got no reason not to be confident on the weekend if we come with the right mindset. "It's about the intensity and the mindset of coming out and getting on top early." Game two of the Warriors' grand final series against the Black Angels will tip off at 7pm this Saturday at Cardinia Life in Pakenham. The brave Lions roar right through to the grand final The words of coach Tom Bluhm summed up the exciting feeling in the Pakenham rooms after the Lions scored a heart-stopping fivepoint victory over Karingal in the South East Women's Division Three second semi-final at Beaconsfield on Saturday. "Congratulations, we're in to a grand final I'm so proud of you girls," Bluhm said after the Lions booked a ticket to the big dance at Shepley Oval on Sunday 8 September with a 4.8 (32) to 4.3 (27) victory. This was a performance that every player in the Pakenham team should be proud of, coming from behind against a tough and determined opponent that had the key focus of stopping the Lions' free-flowing brand of football. Karingal won the toss and kicked with a stiff breeze blowing towards the Beaconsfield end of Holm Park Reserve. Defenders Zoe Loudon, Nat Staunton, Mel Stocker, Bec Domotor, Steph Scott and skipper Rachel Betteridge held firm in a strong opening for the Lions who kept the Bulls scoreless in the opening passages of play. But two quick goals had the Lions on the backfoot before a brilliant conversion from full-forward Sage Hahn cut the margin back to eight points at quarter time. The hard work of forwards Rosie Davis, Hayley Denboer, Courtney Dodson, Chloe Bluhm, Melina Eppel and Kerrie-Anne Micallef all contributed to the goal and gave the Lions a huge boost heading into the first change of ends. Pakenham bottled things up beautifully in the third term and looked in good shape to run away with victory, with the breeze at their back and with a three-point deficit to overcome at three-quarter time. An early goal to Hahn saw the Lions hit the
front early in the final term before the Bulls answered quickly. A classy finish from Eppel saw the Lions regain the lead and survive a late scare to book a well-deserved place in this year's grand final. Danielle Case, Tash Wakenshaw and Beth Studd produced some important defensive efforts in the last quarter, while the run and carry of wingers Chloe Nagel and Ros Cook gave the
Lions some real impetus in the final term. Loudon was superb off half back for the Lions, while Hahn's two goal were super important in the context of a low-scoring match. A richly-deserved honour By Gerard Guthrie Officer's David Gleeson was recognised for more than three decades of involvement in greyhound racing as breeder, owner, administrator and sponsor when he was announced as the winner of the Ken Carr Medal at the Victorian Greyhound of the Year awards on Friday 16 August. The Ken Carr Medal is considered the highest award for excellence within the Victorian greyhound racing industry. The award, for special or outstanding contribution to greyhound racing, requires the recipient to clearly demonstrate four key qualities; skill, integrity, empathy for others and leadership. "Ken Carr was a dear friend of mine. He was forthright, honest and a pleasure to get to know," Gleeson said. Gleeson has been a successful breeder for many years, having produced and raced numerous Group-winning and city class greyhounds, with a dam-line that dates back to the 1960s, and in recent weeks has unearthed another potential top-liner in 'Shima Shine'. "Probably the main reason I'm so passionate about greyhound racing is because there's an old saying that dogs are a man's best friend," said Gleeson. "My father picked out my first pup when I was seven-years-old and I've been involved ever since. That's over 50 years." In partnership with Bob Cummings, through their Davrob Syndicate, Gleeson has regularly made his mark in recent years through his potent 'Shima' line. Shimaguni (Primo Uno - Messines) was a prodigiously talented stayer, winning the Group 2 AWM Distance Championship and Group 3 Chairman's Cup. West Gippsland clubs look to control their own destiny By sports editor Russell Bennett The clubs of the West Gippsland Football Netball Competition have moved to control their own destiny. Star News understands that, as a collective, they’ve moved to revise the structure of their competition moving forward and that would include operating under their own constitution. A letter to that effect, co-signed by WGFNC club presidents, has been sent to AFL Gippsland region general manager Ben Joske. It’s understood that the letter makes clear the clubs’ proposed intention to incorporate its own Board of Management (BOM) moving forward, headed by an independent chair. But, crucially, the clubs want to maintain their relationship with AFL Gippsland and are still eager for their administration to continue under the current relationship. But the presidents have stated that, by the end of September, they want to have their new arrangement in place. Star News understands that, among other things, the competition would then be referred to as a ‘league’, rather than a ‘competition’ perhaps opening the door for the return of the old West Gippsland Football League name.

In late June, AFL Gippsland met with representatives of the 12 current West Gippsland football and netball clubs, who made it clear they were not open to accepting new clubs into the competition for 2020. Soon after, AFL Gippsland received a letter co-signed by all the club presidents that reinforced their collective position. They made it abundantly clear they want a period of stability in what is still a relatively new competition. Following an eye-opening meeting at Kooweerup back in June, which representatives from AFL Gippsland and AFL Victoria also attended, the club presidents made it clear that they’d stand their ground against any forced multi-divisional competition featuring the Alberton League clubs, for example. At the time, they rejected the idea of their competition being controlled by AFL Gippsland, citing a loss of confidence in AFL Victoria to determine the proper future direction of the WGFNC. On the issue of divisional football involving West Gippsland, the clubs are also united. They want to see the concept embrace the regions of Alberton, Ellinbank, and West Gippsland in the future - but they don’t see it happening for at least the next three years.
