It used to be that you needed to discover something in space if you wanted the thrill of naming it, but a new competition is ensuring astronomers don't get to have all the fun. The International Astronomical Union (IAU) - the group officially responsible for naming celestial bodies - recently announced the IAU100 NameExoWorlds competition, which gives every country on Earth the opportunity to name one exoplanet and its host star. The Australian competition is being co-ordinated by Mount Burnett Observatory. Speaking to the Mail, Mount Burnett Observatory President James Murray explained that it's not just any old star/exoplanet pairing either: the celestial bodies that Australians get to name were discovered by Australians and can be easily seen by using a small telescope. "The star chosen for Australia to name is currently known by its catalogue number HD 38283," Mr Murray said. "It is a 7th magnitude yellow-white dwarf star in the constellation of Mensa, the Table Mountain. At that magnitude, this star is not visible to the unaided eye." "Mensa contains part of the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC) within its boundaries, which is the largest satellite galaxy to our own Milky Way, but HD 38283 is definitely within the Milky Way, lying only 125 light years away." "The interesting thing about this system is that the planet was discovered by an Australian led team using an Australian telescope, so there is that link." The exoplanet, currently designated HD 38283b, is a gas giant type planet with 0.4 times the mass of Jupiter. It orbits the star at roughly the same distance as the Earth does the sun. Although many companies offer the opportunity to name a star, if you read the fine print they say that astronomers do not officially recognise the name of the star you just purchased. That is not the case for HD 38283, and whichever name is chosen will be recognised officially by astronomers all around the world. Mr Murray said the name had to be reflective of Australia and promoted indigenous names.

This was a group that protested against the development of the Olinda Golf Precinct, claiming to the Herald Sun that the issue had created a "huge split" within the community. That article was duly published by the Herald. My objection at the time was that there was no such split. Their objection was the government grant of $7.65 million to turn this area into a hub of activity - playground, sports area, together with landscaping, access to the Rhododendron Gardens, and associated amenities to en-

rich and enhance a neglected area. Their desire was to leave the area untouched, available to visitors, walkers, and dogs off the lead. Hopefully this group may have attended the opening of part one of the project and witnessed the magnificence of the community playground on the weekend. The area was alive with families, dozens of them! The children swung on swings, sat on stools, climbed in huts - altogether sights and sounds of shrieks, laughter, and play. What a weekend! In my original letter to the Mail, my parting comment to the alliance was that they lacked empathy and vision. If the playground is only part one of the de-
velopment, then the vision is not difficult to see. The precinct will be enormous for the sporting clubs of Olinda/Ferny Creek. Many, many players of all sports on offer will benefit greatly from the development, together with walkers (including dogs off the lead) and visitors who, according to the Alliance, number in their thousands each year. Not only is the development a real positive to the community, but add to that the heated swimming pool, marvellous local cafes and restaurants, hostelries, schools and all the other features and facilities in our hills environment, altogether make it a great place to live, raise families, invite friends, and be close to nature. Recycling goes on By Derek Schlennstedt Yarra Ranges Council is urging residents to continue recycling, after 30 other Victorian councils, including Cardinia Shire, received the news that their recycling processor has closed. Cardinia Shire Council was advised on 29 July that SKM Services had temporarily closed all of its sites, resulting in recyclables going to landfill. In a statement, the shire urged residents to keep up recycling efforts despite the kerbside recycling collapse. “We are disappointed about this situation and recognise this is frustrating for our residents, who have a strong track record when it comes to recycling,” Cardinia Shire Council
said. “No one wants recycling going to landfill and we are doing everything we can to find alternate arrangements to reduce the impact of this issue on our environment. “Council remains focussed on maintaining services to ensure the health and wellbeing of our community. "Our residential kerbside recycling collections will continue as normal for residents however, in the short-term, the recycling waste collected will be delivered to landfill. “In the meantime, the best thing our residents can do is to continue their recycling efforts, so the recycling waste put into their bins remains uncontaminated for when the recycling processing recommences.”
Cardinia said the yellow-lid recycling bins would still be emptied. “Residents can continue putting their recycling bin out for collection when it is their recycling week, as it will continue to be collected from the kerbside as normal,” the statement said. The council suggested that residents could also continue recycling at free drop-off points listed here: bit.ly/2MiIW8l. Yarra Ranges Council reiterated that recyclables in the Yarra Ranges municipality would not be diverted to landfill. “Yarra Ranges Council uses VISY for its recycling collection and processing, and is confident that recyclables collected in the area will continue to be processed,” the shire said in a statement.
Support success for Sassafras survey By Derek Schlennstedt A focused group of passionate and determined residents, businesses and organisations has come together under the banner of the Sassafras Village Group (SVG). With the full support and involvement of Yarra Ranges Council, the group hopes to bring planning, funding and eventually coordinated action to the village. Broadly, the objective is to improve the aesthetic beauty, safety and utility of public spaces while celebrating cultural, natural, artistic and historical assets. "We believe Sassafras has so much to offer, not only for the day trippers and tourists, but for the locals too," group member Emma Jennings said. "We want to design the outdoor spaces to enhance the shops, cafes and galleries, with improved facilities, beautiful landscaping, public art and community projects, for people of all ages and abilities." This is a long-term project rolled out in stages and the SVG are inviting all interested persons to nominate their priorities and contribute by raising other items of concern in an online survey. The input from resident will provide direction for the group and help shape the likelihood of receiving support and funding for
Knox TRIP The combined Knox emergency services CFA, SES, police and ambulance - will present a hard-hitting roads program at Wantirna City Life Church on Wednesday 7 August. Drivers aged 18 to 25 are over-represented in serious injury and collisions where lives are lost on the road. The Knox Teenage Road Information Program (TRIP) is designed to address the identified risks of alcohol, drugs, speed, inexperience, distraction and peer group pressure, and provide information and examples of how to change behaviour. Emergency services personnel who have witnessed the devastation caused first hand deliver the program. As a united team, the emergency services of Knox aim to educate and encourage young drivers to make safer decisions on the road. Crack down on hunting The Game Management Authority is teaming up with Victoria Police to target illegal hunting and spotlighting across Victoria this week. The GMA advised hunters to make sure they were doing the right thing and acting responsibly. "Only hunt in areas where hunting is permitted, don’t hunt after dark and make sure you have a current Game Licence,” a statement said. “Remember to always follow the firearms safety rules and never fire at anything that you can’t identify beyond all doubt.” Game hunting offences, such as illegal spotlighting, will not be tolerated and offenders can be fined or prosecuted, have their equipment seized and/or lose their Game and Firearms Licences. Tragic end to search The body of missing hiker and Ferntree Gully man Jeremy Boyden was found in Victoria’s alpine region after an almost week-long search. His body was found about 8am on 25 July near Upper Dargo Road, in the far eastern Victorian town of Dargo. Police are not treating the 23-year-old’s death as suspicious and will prepare a report for the coroner. The discovery came after police found Boyden’s jack russell terrier Rocky alive earlier the same morning.

Awards for local efforts We all know someone who always goes the extra mile to build a stronger community. The parent at the local sporting club that stays back week in and week out to clean up and prepare post-game snacks for the players. The volunteer who runs the extra training session or class so more people in the community can participate. The school student who in their own time, instead of being on Instagram or Snapchat, is working with members in the community to implement a new initiative. The neighbour who raises money and awareness for a local cause and the individual in the community who volunteers at multiple

nity who put in the extra hours. Often despite raising a family, working and dealing with the everyday challenges life throws at them, they still find the time to build a stronger community. On 1 October I am hosting the inaugural Gembrook Community Awards and I am calling on the Gembrook electorate to nominate their local champion. Sharing is caring when it comes to filling the bellies Community groups helping vulnerable community members to access food are calling for support. Outer East Foodshare provides donated food to agencies across the Yarra Ranges and needs volunteers and donations. "We're keen to work with our volunteers to find what works for them and their time," secretary Marilyn Lambert said. "Some people pick up the van, drive to Food Bank Victoria and drive back. "You'd need to be able to lift boxes and have a driver's licence for that, but if you didn't have a licence you could be an off-sider to help with loading the van, or you could be ringing growers, talking to our local food retailers, finding out what's feasible in terms of donations of excess food. "We have a person who is growing silverbeet for us, because she can and it's nutritious and healthy. "That's not a really big time commitment, but it all helps." Lifetime of service By Derek Schlennstedt Mount Dandenong Primary School has paid homage to John Burgan, after the Victorian Government recognised him for an astonishing 55 years of service to education. On 21 July, more than 200 dedicated teachers were honoured for their service, with John being just one of two people in the state to have served 55 years in education - the bulk of which were at Mount Dandenong Primary School. His children, Andrew, Caroline and Matt accepted the award on John's behalf who was unable to attend the award ceremony due to a stroke in 2017. Mr Burgan was at Mt Dandenong from 1981 until 2017 and had a huge impact on the school, including playing a central role in helping secure the 'new' school in the early 1990s. The school took to Facebook to pay homage to the grade six and reading recovery teacher. "John taught generations of Mount Dandenong Primary students and has always been a trusted provider of wisdom and guidance in our school community," the school posted on Facebook. Dandenong Primary School, Wendy Britt reflected on her time with Mr Burgan and said he was someone who all teachers and students admired. "I knew john in all sorts of roles," she said. "He taught both my sons who had him in grade 6 and they loved 'burgo' as they would call him." "I suppose he drifted in and out of teaching,
but he loved it and he always came back." "He was fantastic as the reading intervention teacher helping the children who were struggling with their literacy and he was doing that up until he had his stroke ... that was really his role." She told the Mail that as the grade six teacher at Mount Dandenong he would endeavour to make their graduation year feel 'special'. "He helped to make year six a special year, and then when he was no longer there those camps and productions that he had introduced continued on, because you didn't dare drop them as they were so wonderful and everyone loved them." "I am lucky that I knew him as a colleague, but also because he taught my children and I know how much they admire him." John's son Matt Burgan accepted the award with his brother and sister and spoke to the Mail about Mr Burgan's love for teaching. He said that his dad kept working right up until his stroke in 2017. "He Taught at Mount Dandenong every year since 1981," Matt said. "Ultimately, he loved teaching kids; he just loved spending time and helping kids."
CCTV cameras ensure CFA station security By Derek Schlennstedt A generous donation of CCTV cameras from SECUREcorp will ensure that the Menzies Creek CFA equipment remains safe and secure. Volunteer Member at Menzies Creek, David Van Loon initiated a conversation between the station and SECUREcorp, after the Mail reported on the theft of two chainsaws from Macclesfield CFA in January. "Macclesfield being broken into really prompted a discussion with the brigade about our security," Mr Van Loon said. "We get a baseline of equipment from the CFA but it's mainly fundraising which is done by donating our time to secure better things like chainsaws and hoses so the value can potentially be more than the cost to generate it." Mr Van loon said that the the station had previously been targeted by thieves who had tampered with an item that was donated to the station. "We've had a few things taken externally items of lesser value." "For a brigade that's unmanned we'll be able to log in and check the cameras if need be." SECUREcorp are providing the station with four CCTV cameras that can be accessed remotely. The six megapixel resolution cameras will record 24/7 with the ability to send alarm events upon motion. A spokeperson for SECUREcorp said the organisation was thrilled to support local CFA stations.
Green ribbon By Derek Schlennstedt More than 800,000 indigenous plants have been planted in the past 12 years of Yarra Ranges Council’s Ribbons of Green program, offsetting emissions and improving the shire's environment. Ribbons of Green helps about 45 local landholders each year to carry out habitat restoration works on their properties and plant and protect more than 50,000 indigenous plants. On the 10-year project evaluation presented to the 23 July council meeting, Cr Richard Higgins said the council creating partnerships with landholders had been a highlight of the program. “Ribbons of Green is something our community can be really proud of,” he said. “The Yarra Ranges is home to some of the most environmentally important areas in Victoria. “The program is restoring our natural habitat, supplying landholders with indigenous native plants and planting equipment, along with ongoing training and advice. “Protecting and creating habitat on private land is a meaningful way for landowners to contribute to our gorgeous landscape and help build its resilience.” Ribbons of Green has provided plants to about 500 private land owners, 69 schools and 30 reserves. Speaking to councillors on Ribbons of Green, council staff Simon Woodland and Kym Saunders said landowners had reported an increase in wildlife on their properties following the plantings. “We provide the plants, tube stock, weed matting and tree guards, and landowners take it from there,” they said. “Wildlife doesn’t lie, and when we set up motion-activated fauna cameras in these areas they’ve captured photos of wildlife returning to these zones, which we know they don’t do if it’s not right.” Applications for the program are open all year to landholders with more than four acres of land. The sub-branch has been an avid supporter of the event since its inception in 2005 but this is the first time it has hosted the event. Veterans and participant groups will assemble at Devon Street at 10.30am, with the march to Croydon RSL (Croydon Library) commencing at 10.45am. The service will start at the completion of the march, and fellowship at Croydon RSL will follow the service. All are welcome to attend. The event is an initiative of the Vietnam Veterans Association Outer Eastern Melbourne Sub-Branch, the RSL sub-branches of Croydon, Healesville, Lilydale, Mount Evelyn, Upper Yarra, Warburton, Yarra Glen, and the National Servicemen's Association Outer Eastern and Yarra Valley Sub-branch.

Monbulk College on tour By Derek Schlennstedt On 22 June, 13 year 10 Monbulk College students left Australia for Cambodia, to participate in the World Challenge. While in Cambodia, the Monbulk students worked with The Cambodian Rural Development Team to improve the living standards of an impoverished rural community on the island of Koh Thnot. They made their contribution by digging and installing water lines, and by connecting houses in the village to water for the first time. Students worked together alongside the local people to complete the job in 38-degree heat, using only basic equipment. The Monbulk further explored Cambodia by trekking through the jungle in Raranakiri and boating down the Mekong River, where they're were able to observe the Irrawaddy Dolphin - an endangered species with only 90 known animals left in existence. When asked about his experience, Cooper said that his favourite part of the trip was the
homestay on the island of Koh Thnot. "Getting to know the family - even though the language barrier was difficult, it would make you so happy to make a connection with them, even if it was just through one word." "It also gave me a lot of insight into how different life can be." The preparation was just as important as the trip itself, with students covering their expenses by holding multiple fundraisers including trivia nights, plant sales, sausage sizzles and even selling their own artwork. The World Challenge is a program that promotes 'transformative travel experiences' for students, enabling them to explore the globe and experience a way of life entirely different to their own, while completing communitydevelopment work. Monbulk College has been participating in the World Challenge for 7 years.

A new fun-run is coming to the Dandenong Ranges and aims to raise awareness and funds for Creutzfeldt-Jakob Disease (CJD). The fun run will be held on Sunday 27 October in Emerald and event director Mellissa Williamson described the run as an inclusive fun-run for people of all abilities. Ms Williamson said there would be three different event options including a 10km and 5km route, which will utilise the Eastern Dandenong Ranges Trail between Cockatoo and Emerald Lake Park. Drawing on her own experience as a mother, Ms Williamson said she wanted to create a community driven fun-run that mothers with prams, or people in wheelchairs could take part in. "I want to create an event that people in wheelchairs and mums with prams can do, because there is really nothing to participate in." The fun run is raising awareness for CJD, with all funds going toward the CJD Support Group Network. Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease, also known as CJD, is a rare degenerative disease of the brain that is fatal, and has no known cure or treatment. In previous years, Ms Williamson took part and raised money through the City2Sea marathon in memory of her closest friend who died from the disease. "One of my closest friends had Sporatic CJD and then the next year is when I decided to enter the City2Sea event to raise money and we personally raised almost $5000." "But City2Seasea stopped operating and we were going to do the Melbourne marathon, but that doesn't allow prams. "She was my best friend and the most amazing lady and I feel like this is my way of

Demystifying death By Derek Schlennstedt Death. It's hardly the go-to topic of conversation with your partner after a hard day at the office. But most of us go to such lengths to avoid talking about it - ever - with our loved ones that we may as well believe that dying doesn't actually happen. The recently formed Yarra Ranges Community DeathCare Collective is bucking that trend and hosting an inaugural Yarra Ranges Dying to Know Expo. This expo coincides with the nationally recognised Dying to Know Day on Thursday 8 August, and aims to engage and empower the community around all aspects of death, dying and bereavement. The four day event at the Tecoma Uniting Church, from Thursday 8 to Sunday 11 August, will be full of interesting ways to tackle the challenging topic of having conversations around death and contemplating our mortality. Christina Reeves who is leading the project explained that the program will be presented in an inclusive and gentle way. "We are offering a diverse and inclusive range of family friendly educational experiences and activities to make this information accessible to all including a range of stalls and displays, talks, workshops, documentary screenings, music, art, therapy, dance, ritual and interactive experiences for people of all ages." Speaking to the Mail Ms Reeves said that death, and dying has become a taboo topic and that the program hoped to unpack the topic. Belgrave work By Derek Schlennstedt Geotechnical works will take place at Belgrave Station car park from next week. As part of planning works for the proposed new multi-deck car park at Belgrave Station, environmental surveys and soil sampling will occur from 7am to 6pm between Tuesday 30 July and Friday 2 August. During these works, up to 20 parking spaces will be temporarily closed, with passengers asked to follow safety signs in place during this time. The geotechnical analysis will provide essential information about the current ground conditions of the site, providing crucial input into the concept design for the station car park. "These works will help us move to the next stage of planning for the car park, allowing us to advance the design process and carry out further consultation with the local community," Mr Merlino said. The design for the car park will be informed by feedback received from the community, following face-to-face and online engagement earlier this year. Once the concept design for the car park is completed, further engagement with the community and stakeholders will take place, and planning work for the car park will continue in conjunction with expert engineers and architects. Mr Merlino said that upgrading the car park at Belgrave Station will deliver a range of benefits including more car parking spaces, improved pedestrian access for people of all abilities and better integration between the township and the iconic Puffing Billy tourist railway. The Belgrave car park upgrade also includes improvements to the bus interchange and additional bicycle storage, making it easier for people to connect with their preferred form of transport. Kids finding confidence Families with pre-schoolers in the greater Healesville area are connecting with and supporting each other through the Badger Creek Playgroup. The supported playgroup aims to engage and promote inclusiveness and connectedness among local families. The much-needed initiative, funded by a grant through FRRR's (Foundation for Rural & Regional Renewal) Grants for Resilience and Wellness Program over a two-year period, is part of Cire's very successful Gumboots playgroup program across several sites in the Yarra Ranges. Badger Creek facilitator Sarah Anastasio said that some participants, particularly those who live in more rural areas, have benefitted noticeably since the playgroup was launched at the Badger Creek Primary School earlier this year. "Some parents said previously their children did not socialise much due to where they lived. At Badger Creek Playgroup, they have become more confident in their interactions with other children and adults," Sarah said. Badger Creek is a great addition to Cire's popular Gumboots Program and overall mission to meet the needs of children and their families within our reach. Cire's playgroups include: Gumboots at the Upper Yarra Family Centre at Yarra Junction and at Little Apples Playgroup at Gladysdale Primary School, as well as Badger Creek an unstructured playgroup at the Cire's Yarra Junction Community Hub a Parent-Child Mother Goose Program to commence in July. Two Wongs making a white in art world By Derek Schlennstedt Local The Basin artist Tammy Wong Hulbert has been selected as one of 56 creative talents to exhibit their work as part of the eleventh annual HIDDEN Rookwood Sculpture exhibition. Held within the grounds of Sydney's iconic Rookwood Cemetery, from 7 September to 7 October, HIDDEN will transform the cemetery into an open-air exhibition, providing a unique way for visitors to engage with and experience Rookwood. This year, there is a poignant emphasis on the themes of loss and mourning, as many of the selected artists have a personal connection to the cemetery through their loved ones. Tammy Hulbert is an artist; curator and academic based in Melbourne and is born to Cantonese Chinese parents. Her art is influenced by her family's intergenerational migration connection to Australia since 1900, and her recent work addresses issues of belonging and the role of art in encouraging an inclusive city. 'Two Wongs making a white' imagines a relationship between Wong Hulbert and her grandmother. Under the White Australia Policy (19011973), the migration of Chinese wives' was often denied and families became fractured and separated. Wong Hulbert was haunted by stories about her grandmother and her art reflects that.
The Basin artist Tammy Wong Hulbert has been selected as one of 56 creative talents to exhibit their work at the Rockwood Sculpture Exhibition. "She stayed behind in the house my father grew up in and became very lonely at the end of her life. I grew up with the sadness of her story," commented Wong Hulbert. Rookwood is the resting place for her father's family, except for her grandmother.
'Two Wongs making a white' features a table of ceramic dumplings and two empty chairs. The artwork cares for her grandmother's story and feeds her 'hungry ghost,' allowing her grandmother to finally rest alongside her family.

Star shooter reaches out By Romy Stephens Five years ago, Olinda Ferny Creek Football Netball Club's Peri Stewart thought she would never run on to a netball court again. Stewart broke a number of bones in a serious car accident and, as a result, had to go through significant rehabilitation and overcome difficulties walking. "I broke my sacrum, which was the major one," she explained. "They had to fuse my spine together and put some bolts in. "I broke my wrist and my collarbone... I had to take nearly a season off" In that time she spent on the sidelines, Stewart decided to start afresh. She relocated from Woori Yallock to the tight-knit community of Olinda, where the Bloods were instrumental in helping her return to the court. "There's no way I would be playing anywhere near here if they weren't so supportive and encouraging," she said. "They would never push me into anything I didn't want to do." Olinda Ferny Creek's pivotal role in helping Stewart get back on to the court is somewhat symbolic of the culture the club has built in recent times. The Bloods' Premier A Grade side won three of the past four AFL Yarra Ranges premierships and have continued their domination throughout this season so far in the new Outer East competition. The Bloods sit well ahead in first place, having won all 11 games they've played by an average margin of 39 goals. Stewart has been a clear standout in the competition, scoring 575 goals - 296 more than the next best shooter with an average 47.9 goals per match. But the modest shooter said she can't take all the credit for her impressive form. "I don't get the ball unless they give it to me, so my job I don't think is anywhere near as hard as the rest of the girls," she said. Olinda Ferny Creek's head netball coach, Tim Smith, said the team's success comes down to the nature of each and every individual player. "They embrace everything, they embrace the community side expectations of the club," he said. "But more importantly their own expectations and their commitment to each other. "They are very good people and history will say that organisations that have long-term success start with good people." As much as the culture of a club is often the catalyst for success, it doesn't make up the entire picture. The club's netball program has seen Smith train the side to have structure, but also flexibility within the playing style.
Olinda Ferny Creek's Division 1 A Grade side won the 2018 grand final. "We don't hope for intercepts, we don't hope for goals, we manufacture them," he said. "We're not drilled to the point that we're robotic but we're drilled to the point that we understand if this happens we can do this, this and this ... "Our defenders know what the goalers are doing, (and) our goalers know what the defenders are doing." When it comes to preventing the girls from getting too ahead of themselves, Smith said he doesn't need to worry. "The girls certainly don't need me to keep them grounded," he said. "They drive their own humility within the group. "I'm fortunate enough just to be the guy driving the bus. I drive the bus and they all hop off and say to me this is what we're doing and off we go." Despite the Bloods' complete dominance across the competition, netball manager Matt Blanchard said they need to keep on their toes to stay ahead of the pack in years to come. "We're working on a model for long-term success," he said. "We've probably got a more mature list in A grade. Over the last couple of years, we've been introducing a younger player every year. "In any sport, it's a credit to those players to
keep playing at that level. Quite often you can take the foot off the pedal but they're a very competitive bunch. "When you're in that situation, you've got clubs coming at you as well. There's a lot of young talent in those clubs down south-east and we'll be challenged this year for the rest of this season." Some of those clubs Blanchard is referring to include the likes of Cranbourne, Beaconsfield and Berwick. Although Olinda Ferny Creek has proven too strong against these sides in recent times, coach Smith said they'll keep knocking on the Bloods' door both now and into the future. "We can already see, other teams, they've played us once and the alarms bells have gone off," he said. "They've already reacted in many different ways and I can see that they'll react even more next season, they won't sit still." The Bloods have some tough competition ahead as they head towards finals. They face Woori Yallock in Round 13 and then second-placed Beaconsfield the following week. The Eagles are the only team to have proven a threat so far, with the last outing going the Bloods' way 61-42. But for Stewart, as much as she loves winning, her life experience has helped give her a

"This bunch of girls are awesome," she said. "They play with integrity and discipline and they're a great club to be apart of. "I'm super, super lucky to be here and I'm really grateful that I'm here."
Dogs prevail in thriller as a top turnaround continues By Nick Creely Wandin's tremendous turnaround in 2019 continued on Saturday against Cranbourne, surging into the top five and displacing the Eagles from fifth spot as a result. The Dogs and Eagles fought out a fascinating battle at The Kennel in AFL Outer East Premier Division, with the home side holding on in a tense final term, 12.20 (92) to 13.11 (89). In particular, the Dogs surged ahead with an excellent final half, motoring back from 20 points down at the major break to wrestle back momentum thereafter. Once again, Rohan Heasley was crucial for the home side, while Michael Fowkes, Mark Sandfort and David Barton were all named in the best. For the Eagles - who continue to battle its own injury concerns - defender Jordan Bertrand was super, while Shaun Marusic's strong form in the middle continued with another strong game. The crucial result means that the Dogs move into fifth spot on 28 points, with the Eagles sitting just behind on 26 points as the race for the remaining finals position continues. The loss in particular makes the Bloods' finals hopes even more difficult, now sitting two games behind the Dogs in fifth. But the Bloods led at half-time after kick-
ing eight goals in the first two quarters, before the class of the Tigers on their home deck saw them overrun with a six-goal to one second half. Defender Michael Riseley was excellent for the Tigers, while for the Bloods - who showed some terrific fight - Luke Hill kicked two and was a presence. In the final games, Narre Warren continued to build momentum with a strong win against Healesville, 31.22 (208) to 8.6 (54), while Berwick was too classy for Beaconsfield, 11.8 (74) to 5.10 (40). In Division 1, Monbulk put its first loss of the season last week behind them with a comfortable win against Warburton Millgrove, 11.22 (88) to 5.2 (32). The Hawks could have won by a lot more had it not been for its conversion at goal, but were never really challenged across four quarters. Kai Linde slotted three in a dynamic performance, with Brodie Emmett snaring three himself for the Hawks. Pakenham, meanwhile, also had a day out, registering 40 scoring shots on its way to a dominant win against Belgrave, 16.24 (120) to 3.4 (22).
The Lions also had its share of troubles with conversion in front of goal, but were utterly clinical as they eye off a potential late charge towards the minor premiership, sitting just a game behind the Hawks at the top. Once again, the Lions shared the load in front of goal, with 10 individual goal kickers getting the job done. The returning Dermott Yawney was instrumental in the back half in his first game since early-May. The remainder of the round will be played this Saturday, with Emerald hosting Doveton and Mount Evelyn welcoming Officer. In Division 2, Gembrook-Cockatoo picked up a monster win against Yea to further cement itself in the top-five, 24.13 (157) to 7.1 (43). The Brookers were well served by Tarkyn Lockyer with six majors, while Colin Bastow, Josh Tilly and Mitchell Brown (five goals) were destructive. In the remaining matches, Seville defeated Alexnadra, 17.14 (116) to 7.9 (51), Powelltown got the better of a wasteful Kinglake, 17.16 (118) to 4.16(40), while Yarra Junction comfortably defeated Yarra Glen, 16.8 (104) to 11.10 (76). Athletes chase it By Jamie Strudley Yarra Ranges Athletics sent a small but excited team to Lake Wendouree, Ballarat, on Saturday 27 July for Round 7 of this year's XCR season. All junior athletes completed one 6 kilometre lap of the iconic circuit made famous by Steve Monaghetti, while the seniors ran 15km (two and a bit laps). It doesn't happen often, but Ballarat turned on a near-perfect Ballarat day, making the twohour drive worthwhile. Standout performances came from Maddie Laven (second in the Under-16 Girls), James Laven (second in the Under-20 Men) in the 6km event. Calvin Amos and Veida Somerville were the best performed athletes in the 15km event. Final results are: Junior 6km Women - Madeline Laven 22.04, Georgia Laven 23.48, Grace Muller 24.35, Mia Strudley 24.41, Jemima Wilson 26.12.

Hawkettes under lights The Monbulk Junior Football Club Hawkettes played an early match in the final home and away round of the season. The under-14s clash with Belgrave was brought forward to Wednesday 24 July instead of Sunday 28 July. The league rescheduled the game due to a huge number of girls from both teams being due to represent their schools in the Volleyball Victoria Three-Day Schools Cup from Friday to Sunday. "The girls loved playing under lights," club photographer Anthea Heagney said. "It was a great atmosphere and a big crowd to cheer the girls on." The Hawkettes defeated Belgrave, 9.10.64 to 4.5.29.
