Your local renovation experts

IF you’re planning a bathroom or kitchen renovation, finding a reliable supplier who offers quality products, exceptional service, and timely delivery is essential.

That’s exactly what you get at Highgrove Bathrooms, the largest bathroom and kitchen showroom in Central Queensland, located right here in Rockhampton.

A local business with a big vision Highgrove Bathrooms Rockhampton was opened in February 2022 by Simon Moore, who had a clear goal in mind: to offer affordable designer bathroom and kitchen products without compromising on style or quality.

“I started the business because I saw a gap in the market for beautiful, affordable products that are available locally, without the frustrating delays customers often experience,” Simon explained.

Operating from their spacious showroom at 161 Musgrave Street, Berserker — easily recognisable by the two big blue inflatable ducks on the roof — Highgrove Bathrooms has quickly become a trusted name in the region.

With a dedicated team of seven staff members, the company prides itself on providing outstanding customer service and expert advice tailored to each customer’s unique needs.

Why choose Highgrove Bathrooms? One of the standout features of Highgrove Bathrooms is its commitment to keeping stock on hand, so customers don’t have to wait weeks or months for their products to arrive.

“We have the largest showroom in Central Queensland, and we maintain stock on hand, which means no lengthy delays,” Simon said.

The team at Highgrove Bathrooms Rockhampton understands that renovating a bathroom or kitchen can be overwhelming.

That’s why they offer a comprehensive service, including access to an in-house design team that stays up-to-date with the latest trends and innovations in the industry.

Their product development team ensures Highgrove’s range is always fresh, modern, and meets the evolving tastes of homeowners across Central Queensland.

“Having a design team and product development in-house means we’re always keeping up to date with emerging trends within the industry, so our customers get the latest styles and the best quality,” Simon explained.

Supporting the local community and tradespeople

Despite being a young business, Highgrove Bathrooms has already built strong relationships with many local builders and tradespeople, recognising the importance of collaboration to deliver exceptional renovation projects.

“We work with a lot of local builders and tradespeople in the region,” Simon said.

He adds that one of the biggest challenges faced by the business so far has been the shortage of tradespeople in Rockhampton, a common concern in many growing regions.

Still, the company remains optimistic

about the future, supported by a welcoming local community that values high-quality products and services.

Your one-stop shop for renovations

For those just starting on a home renovation journey, Simon offers practical advice: “Have a plan in place and a budget, then visit our extensive showroom where our highly skilled team can assist you further.”

Highgrove Bathrooms aims to make the renovation experience seamless by guiding customers through every step, from initial design to product selection and final installation.

Whether you’re updating a small bathroom or undertaking a complete

kitchen remodel, Highgrove Bathrooms’ wide range of products means you can find everything you need under one roof.

From stylish vanities and taps to shower screens and accessories, their affordable designer collections cater to all tastes and budgets.

Industry growth and future vision

The home renovation and building industry in Central Queensland is booming, and Highgrove Bathrooms is positioned to grow alongside it.

“There is no slowing down the renovation and building industry across Central Queensland that we can foresee in the near future,” Simon said.

Looking ahead, Simon’s vision for

Highgrove Bathrooms is clear: “To continue our successful growth within the region and to service our customers with exceptional customer service.”

Raise a stein for Oktoberfest

THE Capricorn Coast is preparing for a day of music, dancing, and traditional German festivities as the Lions Club of Emu Park hosts the 40th annual Emu Park Oktoberfest.

Set to take place on Saturday, 25 October, at Bell Park, the festival promises a full day of fun from 11am to 10pm, with something for everyone, from live entertainment to classic German food, flowing beer, and familyfriendly activities.

The annual event has long been a highlight on the coast’s social calendar, drawing locals and visitors alike to celebrate Bavarian culture in a vibrant, community atmosphere.

This year’s Oktoberfest promises to be bigger than ever, with a diverse line-up of musical acts and an array of traditional foods designed to capture the spirit of Germany.

Headlining the entertainment schedule is Safe Sax, a high-energy trio renowned for their lively performances across Australia.

Safe Sax delivers a powerhouse set that spans traditional folk tunes, pop classics, and contemporary favourites, ensuring the crowd will be on their feet throughout the day.

With Peter Fields on guitar, the group’s soulful blend of R and B, jazz, pop, and rock will keep the festival atmosphere buzzing from start to finish. Both acts are expected to bring electric energy to Bell Park, making the 40th anniversary celebration one not to be missed.

Food lovers will also be well catered for, with an impressive menu of German delicacies.

Guests can indulge in sizzling sausages, warm pretzels, crispy kartoffelpuffers, and a selection of sweet treats, including apfel strudel, bee sting cake, and the ever-popular Black Forest torte.

Love, laughter and family

WHAT started as a casual Tinder match has blossomed into marriage, a young family, and a future full of plans for Cody and Andra Patterson.

The couple first connected on 20 August 2022 through the dating app and quickly began chatting on Snapchat.

At the time, Cody had just come out of a relationship and made it clear he wasn’t looking for anything serious.

“It wasn’t love at first sight; we both had our guard up,” Andra said.

“Cody wasn’t looking for anything serious, but there was definitely attraction for both of us.”

Despite their differences, Andra invited Cody over one night for a casual hangout.

Wearing her daggy clothes, hair dye wrapped around her head, and a toilet mat hanging from her neck as a makeshift cape, Andra was certain she wouldn’t see Cody again.

“My son, Illidan, was jumping around energetically, excited because Cody was there. I thought for sure I wouldn’t see him again,” Andra said with a laugh.

But Cody proved her wrong.

The next morning, he returned with a McDonald’s breakfast before heading to Barcaldine for work.

A few days later, tragedy struck when Cody’s beloved Nanny Pam passed away. He returned to Rolleston to be with family, then back to Dundee to organise the funeral.

During this time, Cody spent every night at Andra’s house before making the early morning drive back.

“Andra’s willingness to put effort into our relationship really showed then,” Cody said.

“The day after my Nanny’s funeral, I told her I wished she were there. I didn’t think she’d come all that way just to comfort me, but the next morning she packed her car and drove to Rolleston.”

When she arrived, Andra unknowingly met most of Cody’s family in one hit.

“I later found out Cody hadn’t told anyone I was coming,” she said.

“They all thought he’d picked me up from the pub.”

A few weeks later, Cody returned to Rockhampton to fly to Brisbane for a family trip to CMC Rocks. Naturally, he stayed at Andra’s, and before dropping him at the airport the next morning, she decided it was time to “lock him down” and make their relationship official.

The next year wasn’t without challenges.

Cody’s work often took him away, and the pair made do with late-night conversations, sometimes with Cody standing in a shed just to get better phone reception.

But in June 2023, he started working for Ergon Energy, giving them more stability and time together.

On the one-year anniversary of their Tinder match, 20 August 2023, they welcomed their son, Kaeden.

“Having Kaeden only strengthened our love for each other,” Andra said.

On 25 April 2024, Cody proposed at the very venue they had been considering for their wedding, The Barn at the Mountain.

“I asked if she could see herself getting married there and said I’d better give her the ring,” Cody said.

“I was that excited that I forgot to ask the question; she had to remind me.”

They wed on 11 July 2025 at the same wedding arbour where Cody had proposed.

“My absolute favourite moment was seeing Cody’s face when I started walking down the aisle,” Andra said.

“It was such a sweet moment that only I witnessed.”

Cody said his highlight was “being able to see it all come together and spend the day with people who mean

the most to you,” adding that the Kombi Keg bar was “a must-have” for him.

As a married couple, one of their favourite moments came immediately after the ceremony, when they shared a quiet embrace away from the crowd.

“That fleeting moment when it’s just the two of you and no one else matters. That’s what we’ll always remember,” Andra said.

“We can’t wait to continue to grow as a couple and a family,” Cody said.

“We’re looking forward to kicking more goals together.”

Cody proposed at The Barn At The Mountain, forgetting the words he had rehearsed—but Andra reminded him, and the answer was a definite yes.

Racing season kicks off in style

SPRING racing is set to take centre stage at Callaghan Park with the Rockhampton Jockey Club (RJC) preparing for one of the biggest social events of the year, the Caulfield Cup on Saturday, 18 October.

Chief executive officer David Aldred said the event draws around 4000 guests annually and continues to grow in popularity, combining high-quality racing with all the glamour of Spring fashion.

“Caulfield Cup is Rockhampton’s glamour Spring Carnival race day,” he said.

“Callaghan Park is the place to be and be seen.”

One of the highlights of the day is the hotly contested Fashions on the Field, which Aldred says has become a drawcard in its own right.

Entrants compete across categories including over 40 ladies, under 40 ladies, best dressed gents, and best millinery, with winners sharing in cash and prizes thanks to sponsorship from Quest Apartment Hotels.

“Entrants are encouraged to showcase Spring and Summer trends

with an edge,” Aldred said.

“Judges look for originality, style and statement headwear that completes the outfit.”

Fashions on the Field has grown year on year, now attracting competitors from across Queensland.

Entrants can register on the day at the front gate before parading on the lawn stage in front of the crowd.

Beyond the fashion, Callaghan Park promises plenty of entertainment.

Local favourites Short Fall will

perform at the official after party, while food trucks and roving entertainers will add to the carnival atmosphere.

The Caulfield Cup also kicks off a busy calendar for the RJC, with the Melbourne Cup returning to the track on Tuesday, 4 November, bringing back live local racing for the first time in years. Later in November, the 2YO Breeders Plate will showcase the region’s new generation of racing stars.

Aldred said these events are vital to both the racing industry and the wider community.

“They are enormously popular and a huge benefit socially and economically, bringing people from across Queensland and interstate to experience Rockhampton and the Capricorn Coast,” he said.

With two hospitality precincts already sold out and tickets selling fast, Aldred urged racegoers to secure their spot early.

“Every big race day at Callaghan Park has something for everyone, from fine dining to trackside fun,” he said.

“It’s all about celebrating racing, fashion and community in style.”

Tickets are available at callaghanpark.com.au.

Your hidden gem for vintage

TUCKED beside Kinsfolk Coffee at 1 Meter Street, The Range, just behind Rockhampton Grammar School and the water towers, Bryher Store is a hidden gem for lovers of vintage fashion.

For owner Hannah Chapman, it’s the weekend ritual she always imagined – grabbing a coffee next door before browsing through a curated collection of timeless clothing.

Packed to the rafters with classics from the 70s through to the early 2000s (yes, Y2K included), Bryher Store is a treasure trove of 90s denim, cosy winter knits, corduroy, and authentic vintage tees.

Each item is chosen with a focus on quality, versatility, and longevity, encouraging customers to build wardrobes filled with pieces that last.

The idea for Bryher Store began after Hannah and her partner Harris opened Kinsfolk Cafe in 2021.

Inspired by their time living down south – where weekends often meant coffee runs followed by vintage shopping – they decided to bring the same experience to Rockhampton.

One of Hannah’s ongoing challenges is sourcing clothing suited to Central Queensland’s warm climate.

“The 70s were heavy on polyester, which isn’t great for summer,” she said.

“I’m adding more lightweight cotton and linen pieces towards the end of the year.”

Bryher Store also supports local creatives, recently adding jewellery by Paige Pearls to its collection.

“Rori’s beautiful pearl jewellery sells like hotcakes,” Hannah said.

“It’s affordable, locally made, and so popular.”

What makes Bryher Store unique is its mission to shift the focus from fast fashion trends to the desirability of long-lasting, sustainable style.

Hannah spends hours on Pinterest and Instagram curating looks that prove vintage can still be on-trend.

The local community has embraced the store, with many customers returning weekly for new arrivals.

“It’s an honour seeing the excitement when someone finds that perfect piece,” Hannah said.

Looking ahead, Hannah hopes to expand and continue honing her mending and upcycling skills, giving pre-loved pieces new life.

“There’s so much potential in helping clothes last longer,” she says.

You’ll find them at 1 Meter Street,

Trusted floors for 40 years

FOR more than 40 years, Carpet One Rockhampton has been helping Central Queenslanders transform their homes with quality flooring and window fashions.

Established in 1983 by brothers Gerard and Peter Watts, the business remains proudly family-owned, with Gerard’s son, Warwick, now managing the day-to-day operations.

Located at 86 Elphinstone Street, Berserker, Carpet One Rockhampton services a wide area of Central Queensland, supplying and installing a full range of flooring options, from carpets, timber and vinyl planks to tiles, along with stylish, practical window fashions.

Warwick said the business’s reputation has been built on a commitment to care, quality and attention to detail.

“Every job matters to us, from the first consultation to the final installation. We’re committed to doing things properly and treating clients with respect,” he said.

With a team of seven, including management, the business works closely with homeowners, builders and renovators to deliver functional and visually appealing results.

For more than 40 years, Carpet One Rockhampton has been bringing quality flooring and window fashions to homes across Central Queensland.

While demand is strong, Warwick says the biggest challenge has been finding additional installers to keep up with the growing number of projects.

The team is constantly introducing new products and ideas to keep their offerings fresh and relevant, keeping a close eye on industry trends, supplier

innovations and customer preferences.

This approach ensures Carpet One Rockhampton stays ahead in a competitive market.

Warwick’s advice for anyone planning a renovation is simple: he said to work with professionals who understand both the technical and

visual aspects of your project.

“Balance makes all the difference in achieving a result you’ll love,” he said.

Over the decades, the business has developed strong ties with the local community, suppliers and fellow business owners.

Warwick said the support of Rockhampton locals has been instrumental in the company’s growth.

Looking ahead, Warwick’s vision is to continue running a resilient, forwardthinking business that sets the standard for flooring across Rockhampton and surrounding areas.

“We’re proud of the work we do and the values we stand by,” he said.

“Whether it’s a small home renovation or a complex restoration project, we approach every job with care, professionalism and a commitment to doing things right.”

From modern home updates to timeless designs, Carpet One Rockhampton is the trusted name in flooring and window fashions for Central Queensland.

Gardening Tips for a Healthy, Happy Garden

Whether you’re growing flowers, vegetables, or a lush green lawn, a few simple habits can help your garden thrive all year round. Here are some practical, down-toearth tips to keep your outdoor space looking its best.

1.Know Your Soil

Healthy plants start with healthy soil. Test your soil’s pH with an inexpensive kit from a garden centre. Most plants prefer slightly acidic to neutral soil (around pH 6–7). Adding compost or well-rotted manure can improve structure and feed your plants naturally.

2.Water the Right Way

Water deeply rather than often. A slow, thorough soak encourages roots to grow deeper, making plants more drought-resistant. Early morning is the best time to water, as leaves have time to dry before nightfall, reducing the risk of disease.

3.Mulch for Moisture & Weed Control

A layer of mulch (such as bark chips, straw, or shredded leaves) locks in soil moisture, keeps weeds down, and improves soil health over time. Aim for 5–8 cm thick, but keep mulch a few centimetres away from plant stems to avoid rot.

4.Choose the Right Plants for Your Climate

Check the plant tags or seed packets for climate suitability and sunlight needs. Native plants often require less water and are more resistant to local pests.

5.Prune with Purpose

Regular pruning encourages new growth, shapes plants, and removes dead or diseased parts. Use clean, sharp tools and avoid heavy pruning during very hot or frosty periods.

6.Feed Your Plants Naturally

Liquid seaweed, compost tea, and worm castings are gentle, natural fertilisers that give plants a steady boost. Avoid over-fertilising, as too much can harm roots or encourage excessive leaf growth at the expense of flowers or fruit.

7.Attract the Good Bugs

Not all insects are pests! Ladybirds, lacewings, and bees help pollinate plants and keep harmful pests in check. Planting flowers like lavender, marigolds, and basil can bring these beneficial insects to your garden.

8.Rotate Vegetable Crops

If you grow vegetables, avoid planting the same type in the same spot every year. Rotating crops helps prevent soil-borne diseases and balances nutrient use.

9.Compost Your Kitchen Scraps

Fruit and vegetable peelings, coffee grounds, and garden clippings make excellent compost. Avoid adding meat, dairy, or oily foods, which can attract pests.

10.Enjoy the Process

Gardening isn’t just about the end result — it’s about slowing down, getting your hands in the soil, and enjoying the fresh air. Take time to appreciate the small signs of growth and the wildlife your garden attracts.

Quality you can walk on

WHEN it comes to transforming your home, the right flooring and window furnishings can make all the difference.

At Andersens Rockhampton, you’ll find an impressive range of products, expert installation, and a level of personalised service that sets them apart.

Locally owned by Andrew Finney since November 2023, Andersens Rockhampton is part of the wider Andersens franchise, which has more than 52 stores nationwide.

Despite this national presence, the Rockhampton store prides itself on maintaining “small town values” — delivering friendly, personalised service with every project.

Andersens Rockhampton specialises in a wide variety of flooring options, including carpets, sheet vinyl, vinyl planks, hybrid flooring, tiles, cork, and engineered timber.

They also supply and install single and double roller blinds, panel glide blinds, shutters, and verticals — making them a true one-stop shop for both flooring and window solutions.

Andrew, who comes from a trades background as a diesel fitter, saw business ownership as an exciting new challenge.

“I’ve always wanted to try my hand

at business, and taking over Andersens has been a steep but rewarding learning curve,” he said.

His small but skilled team of three full-time staff works closely with a network of dedicated subcontract installation teams to deliver highquality workmanship on every job.

A personalised experience From start to finish, Andersens

Rockhampton makes the process as smooth as possible.

“We try to make the process more personalised and pride ourselves in providing a high standard of workmanship,” Andrew explained.

Customers are encouraged to visit the store to explore their extensive product range and speak to friendly staff who can guide them through both

the selection and installation process. Looking ahead

This year marks an exciting milestone for the Rockhampton store, with a major renovation planned to align with the new Andersens franchise image.

Work will begin in the coming months, and while there may be some minor disruptions, Andrew and his team are committed to maintaining a “business as usual” approach wherever possible.

Since taking over, Andrew has seen the store’s customer base grow significantly — a testament to the local community’s support.

“We’ve been really welcomed by Rockhampton residents,” he said.

Whether you’re renovating, building, or simply updating a room, Andersens Rockhampton offers the expertise, products, and personalised service to help bring your vision to life.

Greener lawns all year round

WHEN it comes to achieving a lush, healthy lawn, Coochie HydroGreen Lawn Services is raising the bar.

Owned by Ace Edwards, this local franchise specialises in year-round lawn treatment programs designed to deliver greener, thicker and healthier lawns.

Unlike mowing services, Coochie HydroGreen focuses on long-term lawn health through regular fertilisation, weed control, pest management and targeted treatments tailored to the local climate.

“We’re not here to mow lawns, we’re here to improve them,” Ace said.

“Our approach is consistent, research-backed and proven to work in Rockhampton and Gracemere’s unique conditions.”

The business began servicing the region in mid-2024, with Mark Bartley managing day-to-day operations and delivering personalised service to every customer.

Community support has been strong, with word-of-mouth recommendations playing a big role in

the company’s growth.

A key point of difference is Coochie HydroGreen’s fine-tuned seasonal treatment approach, ensuring lawns receive exactly what they need at the right time of year.

Being part of a national network also gives the team access to the latest industry research, training and innovations.

The business works closely with local mowing and lawn renovation companies, helping clients access a complete range of lawn services while supporting the local industry.

Looking ahead, Ace sees steady growth and an expanding team in the next few years.

“More people are recognising the value of a healthy, attractive lawn,” he said.

“We’re here to make that happen.”

Solid foundations

MORE than two decades ago, CQ Soil Testing began with nothing more than a small backyard setup, a vision, and a whole lot of determination.

Today, the company stands as a trusted name in geotechnical investigations across Queensland, with fully operational offices in Hervey Bay, Mackay, and—most recently—South East Queensland.

Director Scott Walton has been there from the start, navigating the early challenges of a niche industry that, at the time, had very little competition.

“When I first started, there was only one other company in this space,” he recalled.

“Like any new business, it was tough at first. But after some groundwork and a lot of cold calling, slowly but surely I managed to gain traction, pick up some clients—and the rest is history.”

For the first ten years, CQ Soil Testing primarily served the domestic housing market, working with homeowners, builders, and engineers to ensure stable foundations for residential properties.

But as the business matured, so did its scope.

“We eventually moved into the commercial and industrial markets, expanding our capabilities and

From backyard beginnings to Queenslandwide expertise, CQ Soil Testing has been building solid foundations for over 20 years.

workforce to meet increasing demand,” Mr Walton said.

Whether it’s a new home, a major development, or an infrastructure project, soil testing is a critical first step.

“If you’re building or renovating a house and it sits on the earth, we do the soil testing needed for engineers to design the foundations,” Mr Walton explained.

“We basically make sure the soil is stable enough so your home won’t shift or collapse into the earth.”

CQ Soil Testing’s growth is a testament to both perseverance and

adaptability.

One of its more symbolic recent milestones is the relocation of the Rockhampton office to the historic former Park Avenue Fire Station—a fitting home for a company built on solid foundations.

As the business continues to grow across Queensland, Mr Walton remains committed to the same principles that guided him from the very beginning: quality work, strong relationships, and a down-to-earth approach to building success from the ground up.

Ensuring stable foundations for homes, commercial developments, and infrastructure— CQ Soil Testing is trusted across Queensland.
