Singing to her own tune

Chezahn Pomare has used her experiences to create an uplifting anthem for victims of bullying.

By Danielle Kutchel After years of severe bullying, Chezahn Pomore has had the final say against those who tormented her.

The 14-year-old Pakenham Secondary College student recently appeared on ABC's The Recording Studio, a show which allows everyday Australians to professionally record a song and gift it to others.

Choosing to sing 'Scars to Your Beautiful', Ms Pomore said the lyrics of the song relate to her and her journey.

"I just wanted people who are going through this or have gone through this to know they're not alone... because that was something I wish I had known," she said.

Pothole plague

By Danielle Kutchel and Mitchell Clarke Frustrated drivers could be waiting up to eight weeks for a patch on potholes that have opened up on the corner of Rix Road and Officer South Road, Officer.

The potholes have opened up just past the roundabout at the busy intersection, which caters to dozens of trucks and buses throughout the day.

Star News has observed motorists swerving onto the opposite side of the road in an effort to avoid the hazards.

Residents have expressed their concern and disappointment, with several noting that patch jobs weren't cutting it.

"As such, council is continuing to advocate and facilitate a prompt outcome between the developer and the contractor to enable works to re-commence on site as soon as possible."

Star News Group has reached out to the developer, Banriar Investments, on numerous occasions, however their phones are unable to be reached.

In the meantime, council claim they're "working hard" on the delivery for Stage 2 works to seal the section of Kenilworth Avenue from the Princes Highway overpass to Coach House Lane.

"These works have recently been tendered to enable works to commence and continue in unison with the Stage 1 works later this year," Mr Benazic said.

Meanwhile, Lee Nuttall said the potholes were "so harsh they set the accident warning on my dashcam off the other day."

Cardinia Shire Council's general manager infrastructure and environment, Peter Benazic, said council was aware of the "road surface defects", with a new patch on the area due in the coming months.

"Rix Road is a sealed road and any defects that arise, such as potholes, are repaired as quickly as possible and in accordance with Council's Road Management Plan," he said.

No release for serial ‘bail-runner’

By Cam Lucadou-Wells An alleged bail-runner who had driven unlicensed for the past 30 years has been refused bail.

Nolan Corn was intercepted by police after allegedly speeding at 104 km/h in an 80 km/h zone on South Gippsland Highway, Clyde about 2.30am on Tuesday 24 July, a court heard that day.

Police told the court that the unlicensed driver with a "substantial criminal history" had four warrants for his arrest for failing to appear on bail since 2015.

A police remand liaison officer said Corn admitted to never having had a driving licence, but gave no reasons as to why he offended and failed to attend court.

"He continually goes into hiding when he is charged with police matters," the officer told the Dandenong Magistrates' Court bail hearing.

"It's my opinion that he will continue to commit offences on bail and he just won't turn up."

One of Corn's outstanding court matters included charges of speeding by more than 45 km/h, dangerous driving, unlicensed driving, drink and drug driving, trafficking and possessing 'ice' and possessing ecstacy in 2015.

In the same year, he was charged with receiving stolen goods, unlicensed driving, driving an unregistered vehicle and using a fraudulent registration label.

In October 2017, he was charged with failing to stop for police and unlicensed driving, and bailed at Narre Warren police station.

Corn appeared at the next two adjourned Dandenong Magistrates' Court hearings but failed to show for court in January 2018, police say.

At the bail hearing, Corn, facing 19 charges, represented himself from the dock.

"I didn't have anywhere to live for a while there," he told the court.

"I was very much into the drugs then, Your Honour.

"When you're like that you don't take con-

sideration of what's right and what's wrong in your life."

For the past 12 months, he'd lived at a static address, he said.

"I want to try to do anything you want to give to me (in terms of bail conditions)," Corn told magistrate Lara Hartnett.

Ms Hartnett said that the conditions weren't the issue. Rather, it was whether Corn would show up for court.

She noted his priors for driving unlicensed dated back to 1989, including a jail stint in 1998.

"And you get found driving a vehicle - that's the difficulty."

Corn was unable to meet the 'exceptional circumstances' test for bail.

He was also an unacceptable risk of not appearing in court and committing further offences on bail, Ms Hartnett found.

Corn was remanded to appear at Dandenong Magistrates' Court on 6 August.

Men’s Shed lends a hand to nature

By Brendan Rees A group of nifty handymen in Berwick have lent a helping hand in the aftermath of the Bunyip fire devastation.

Four volunteers from the Akoonah Park Men’s Shed dedicated two weeks of their time building 40 bird boxes - after receiving a call for help from the Tonimbuk fire recovery centre.

The bird boxes will become a new home for wild parrots after the March blaze burnt more than 14,000 hectares.

The shed’s manager Maurice Hall said he didn’t hesitate to take on the job.

“We do a lot of community work - when it comes in we do it,” he said.

“I just said yes straight away, I didn’t even hesitate.”

Vermont Men’s Shed also donated about 320 sheets of plywood used for the project.

some black paint on them over the joins so they don’t rot,” Mr Hall said.

“We’ve got wire inside there so baby parrots will be able to claw their way out.”

He added: “The wood’s plain inside just in case birds peck at them.”

Rex Norton, who lost his home to the fires,

said all volunteers were appreciated but more help was needed.

“We need volunteers for anything desperately, to help people in their gardens, to just to be there to talk to, anything,” he said.

“We need donations of plants for people to re-do their gardens ... anything like that is appreciated.”

Outlooks brighten in the wash

By Cam Lucadou-Wells The Orange Sky Australia mobile laundry service is not just about washing and drying clothes, says volunteer Shaylee De Lange.

For its homeless clientele, it's also the chance for positive and genuine connection with dedicated and attentive volunteers.

"It's important to let their voices be heard," she said.

Ms De Lange is service manager for the Melbourne South East region, which recently celebrated its 5000th load of washing in just three years.

She still joins in the shifts, about 10 stops a week in the area including Dandenong, Doveton, Narre Warren, Cranbourne, Pakenham, Chelsea and Frankston.

A lot of women escaping domestic violence have been arriving lately. One weekly visitor, who lived in her car, started with nothing but a small pile of clothes. Gradually the amount of clothes have grown, and short-term accommodation has been found.

The brightness has returned to the woman's face, Ms De Lange says.

The laundry is also an important link to other services, such as housing, free showers and food.

Beside her volunteering, Ms De Lange works with a City of Casey community centre and organises the affordably-priced Doveton Show.

She started at Orange Sky while studying a diploma in international development.

Dale heads business body

By Brendan Rees It was a night of good food and networking as members of the Narre Warren Business Group (NWBG) celebrated during their annual dinner on 3 July.

Held at Butlers Kitchen in Narre Warren, outgoing president Steve Osborne handed over the reins to Dale Munckton, who steps into the role with a mind full of ideas.

"Over the next 12 months we will be working hard to further increase our membership base while running events to allow our members and guests to create real connections with each other," he said.

"The committee and I look forward to continuing to grow our relationships with other local business groups and the City of Casey Council.

"As business owners many of us are in a position where we can help those less fortunate than us. I talked about the NWBG striving to increase support for local not for profit groups over the next 12 months," Mr Munckton said.

Mr Osborne steps down after four years in

the role. He thanked the support of the committee and members, and spoke of the growth of the group and the success of their monthly networking events.

International thought leader and author of four books, Ron Malhotra, was guest speaker at the dinner who presented on 'How to leverage the power of LinkedIn to magnify your Influence, Impact and Profit'.

Rob Wilson was presented with life membership. His most notable achievement was in 1996, where he volunteered to run the Webb Street Traders Group annual market day.

He also assisted with having the group incorporated to become the Narre Warren Chamber of Commerce which later evolved into the NWBG. "As chair of the group Rob was involved in running monthly business breakfasts, the creation of the Brownlow Medal Walk of Fame in Webb Street and working with Council for upgrades to the Webb Street precinct," Mr Munckton said.

Shot in the arm for mental health Mental health services in the Casey-Cardinia region have received a much-needed boost with the opening of a new Mentis Assist office.

Mentis Assist has provided services to the south-east for more than 30 years, and has recently opened a Narre Warren office, designed to increase access to support in the area.

The new office, at 9/3 Webb Street, Narre Warren, is open by appointment only to individuals and families in Casey and Cardinia.

Mentis Assist provides Mental Health Integrated Complex Care (MHICC) services with funding received from the South Eastern Pri-

mary Health Network (SEMPHN).

The Mentis Assist team includes mental health nurses, psychologists, social workers and mental health practitioners.

MHICC services are part of a bigger Mental Health Stepped Care Model, which provides mental health support for individuals who might not have been able to afford or access similar care previously.

The service provides flexibility to 'step up' or 'step down' supports depending on a person's needs at any given time.

Mentis Assist CEO, Terry Palioportas, said the service will help those who have slipped through the cracks due to disadvantage.

"There are many who have not been able to access services due to socio-economic factors, who will now be able to receive local, personalised care to help them on their road to recovery and wellbeing," Mr Palioportas said.

As a registered NDIS (National Disability Insurance Service) provider, Mentis Assist also offers support coordination services for participants with an approved NDIS plan from its Narre Warren office.

By Brendan Rees Jason has been camping at the Salvation Army in Cranbourne for nearly two weeks.

He says with a lack of crisis centres in Casey he's had nowhere else to go.

"I'm on the housing commission waiting list but I've been on that for nine years now ... and I'm still waiting," Jason said, who asked not to publish his surname.

He refuses to stay at boarding houses because the conditions, he says, were often "rough" and "getting more expensive."

"If you feel uncomfortable you have go back out on the streets."

At last week's Casey Council meeting on 16 July, mayor Amanda Stapledon successfully moved a motion to consider a pop-up shelter model currently being trialled in Brisbane for people experiencing homelessness.

The model called 'Beddown' aims to utilise spaces often left empty at night, where people are provided a bed in a safe and secure environment.

Charitable organisations would also help with laundry, showers, food, and clothing as well as a visit from a doctor and dentist, she said.

The council has its eye on transforming car parks, church buildings, community halls and other sites in Casey into pop-up shelters.

"This model is a very, very sound one and one I think can bring the whole community together and take stress off other agencies that are trying to do so much," she said.

"It's just about the will of people to want to participate and offer up their services, their facilities when they're not in use overnight."

Cranbourne Information and Support Service executive officer Leanne Petridis said although she favoured longer term housing solutions she recognised the need to "address the reality of people sleeping rough right now."

Kelly Jose of the Salvation Army in Cranbourne said many people experiencing homelessness were forced to camp at the centre's carpark in New Holland Drive.

"Without a doubt something needs to be done with housing ... every second person I

think that comes in here, have had issues with some housing in some form or another," she said.

According to the Council to Homeless Persons CEO Jenny Smith "too often" there wasn't a safe option for homeless women who were "vulnerable to the risks of sleeping rough, or of staying in unsafe housing options like rooming houses, where they are vulnerable to physical and sexual assault.

"We know that the key to ending the housing and homelessness crisis is to increase access to affordable, safe and secure housing with one-to-one wrap around support services," she said.

IN BRIEF Police investigate stabbing Emergency services have been called to reports of a stabbing in Hampton Park on Friday morning, 18 July.

Investigators have been told a man was stabbed in the upper body at around 6.30am on Regan Street.

The man, believed to be in his early forties, has been taken to hospital The Alfred hospital in a stable condition with non-life threatening injuries, Ambulance Victoria said.

Police are investigating. Anyone who witnessed the assault or has information is urged to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.

Police have released images of two men they believe will be able to assist with their enquiries of a theft.

Puffer jacket stolen Police from Narre Warren are investigating a theft which occurred in June.

The alleged theft occurred at a clothing store inside a shopping centre on Overland Drive about 4.15pm on 25 June.

Investigators believe two men entered the store and a removed security tag on a jacket and then left the store without paying, police say.

The jacket stolen was a black Winterburn long-line down puffer jacket.

The men are believed to be aged in their twenties and were both wearing black pants, long sleeve high-vis jumpers and caps.

Arrest following Blind Bight stabbing A man has been arrested following a stabbing in Blind Bight on Saturday 20 July.

Police responded to multiple reports of a car seen driving erratically in the area from about 9.45pm.

It is believed an alleged altercation occurred between the driver and the occupants of another vehicle which resulted in a man sustaining a stab wound.

He was taken to hospital with non-life threatening injuries.

Investigators arrested a 25-year-old man in Narre Warren on Sunday 21 July.

He was interviewed and subsequently charged with intentionally cause injury; recklessly cause injury; two counts of traffic a drug of dependence; possess materials for the manufacture of a drug of dependence; and possess a prohibited weapon.

The Narre Warren man has been remanded in custody to appear at Dandenong magistrates' court on Monday 22 July.

Mosque ‘blends in’ When asked by your Star News reporter recently why Casey Council approved a planning application for a mosque near the Green Wedge Zone on Belgrave-Hallam Road, Narre Warren, mayor Amanda Stapledon replied it would blend in with the environment and the community, (Berwick Star News, "Mosque Lock Out" 18 July).

The fact is that Casey Council and the mayor don't really have a clue or care about the quality of life for existing Casey residents.

A mosque and a school will be magnets for further residential growth and development through a corridor which has been showing signs of severe stress and over-development for many years - with serious rubbish and waste problems, congestion and poor public transport connections.

Unbalanced growth imposes economic and environmental costs on the City of Casey.

Opposing a mosque and school in Casey is about planning for a sustainable population in future and respecting the rights of existing residents. Something that is seemingly unknown to Cr Amanda Stapledon and Cr Wayne Smith?

The present infrastructure in Casey cannot keep up with the pressures of more and more growth. Our Green Wedge Zones will only be compromised by more population pressure, pollution and carbon emissions.

Moreover, by refusing to allow debate on this important public matter, Casey Council has once again revealed itself to be an undemocratic council with an authoritarian leadership model.

The only answer now is for ratepayers and residents to organise to replace the existing council at the 2020 local government elections.

In a council document from January, Casey Council stated it was prepared to pay up to $15 million for the site however the developer wanted double. .

Rebecca Hyland, who had launched a petition, garnering more than 1,200 signatures to keep their promised sports field, said the community was celebrating.

"If it hadn't been the power of the people who knows what could have happened to the 6.8 hectare of land," she said.

"It's so important to our community to have these active green spaces available to them," she said.

Tulliallan School Council president Tara Hall said the school community was "over the moon" with the council's purchase.

"It just goes to show what community spirit and people power is capable of," she said.

She said the extra 140-plus houses would've had "such a massive impact" on the school's enrolment numbers which have ballooned to almost one thousand children in the past three years.

"It's certainly going to ease a lot of pressure on our school facilities; it's going to be great."

A rider from the Casey BMX Club will join Olympians in a 120-strong Australian team for the 2019 UCI BMX World Championships in Belgium in July.

Leading the way for Casey is Dane Van Laeren, who will race in the 17-24 years men's 20 inch category.

The 18-year old of Berwick will use his thirdplace podium finish at the national championships in Shepparton as an added boost of confidence when he travels to Belgium.

Australia's national team manager and 2008 Olympian Luke Madill said it was a wonderful achievement for Casey to be sending a rider to BMX's global showpiece.

"As a club, Casey are doing a great job of preparing their riders and credit must go to everyone who has contributed to getting these riders over to Belgium in top shape," Madill said.

Dane will join Olympians Anthony Dean and Lauren Reynolds, as well as rising superstar Saya Sakakibara and her older brother Kai. At last year's world championships in Baku, Azerbaijan, the Australian team came home with six gold, four silver and four bronze medals.

Cranbourne North residents are finally rejoicing in their fight to keep their promised sports field at Tulliallan Estate.

It comes after residents were furious with a developer who had reneged on their promise of delivering a sports field - instead opting to apply to subdivide the huge parcel of land into housing.

Casey Council and neighbours' have been in near five-year tussle with the developer in trying to resolve the matter.

However Casey Council announced on Tuesday 17 July it had now "reached an agreement" to purchase the land for sporting facilities.

"The respective lawyers are now getting on with preparing the necessary paperwork," a statement from Council said.

"Council officers will now be able to focus on the design and building of the facilities on the 6.8 hectare site."

Construction is anticipated to start next financial year in 2020-21.

Casey Mayor Amanda Stapledon said the purchase was a "great outcome" for the Tulliallan residents and the Casey community - a result council had "been working hard on to achieve."

"While I cannot discuss the terms of settlement due to confidentiality, I would like to assure our community that this is a win-win for all parties involved and that it does not come at the expense of other projects planned across our city," she said.

Tiny Hearts has also compiled statistics from participants, illustrating the importance of teaching the critical first aid skills.

After the course, 98 per cent of parents said they felt more confident to act effectively in an emergency.

Almost 50 per cent reported that they had used their acquired infant and child first aid knowledge within six months of undertaking the course.

Narre Warren's Shelby Cooke, who performed CPR on her choking two-year-old daughter while paramedics rushed to their home, stressed the importance of first aid training.

She believes that had she not received the course through her workplace, her daughter may have suffocated.

"I still owe everything to having those skills," she said.

"The more people that are equipped with them, the less tragedies we're going to see with children, babies and toddlers.

"It's such a frightening thing to go through - so you need to be prepared."

The free sessions will be held across the region, including at Beaconhills College, in Pakenham.

Topics covered will include choking, fevers, convulsions, burns, drowning, bleeding, caring for an unconscious person, bites and stings and head injuries.

By Rowan Forster A lifesaving Pakenham-based venture, spearheaded by a paramedic and a teacher, has received a federal cash injection to provide free first aid training throughout Melbourne's south-east.

Tiny Hearts - founded by sisters Rachael Waia and Nikki Jurcutz - will arm 1800 local parents and carers with the skillsets required to save their children in the event of an emergency.

In a regional first, 300 parents are also set to be trained bilingually, catering for Chinese and Afghan communities.

Their journey began in a garage, but Tiny Hearts now has a headquarters in Pakenham's Industrial Park - proving that business success is attainable under the most challenging circumstances.

Ms Waia, a former educator and volunteer first responder, was first aid trained when she was just 15 years old.

She is determined to share her vital knowledge with as many parents as possible.

"I've got two kids of my own and I know what it's like when they choke and when they're really sick," she said.

"Because we've got such a good report built with our parents, we get a lot of feedback where they say, hey, you literally saved our babies' lives.

"I love what I do - waking up and making a difference."

Tiny Hearts worked in conjunction with the South East Melbourne Primary Health Network to secure the federal grant.

Berwick has its own pageant royalty in nineyear-old Ella Haylock, back on home soil after representing Australia in the Royal International Miss Pageant in Orlando.

Ella competed against around 350 girls from 14 different countries as the 2019 Royal International Miss Australia Pacific Sweetheart, and returned with multiple wins including the Royal International Miss (RIM) Appearance Award, 2019 RIM Regal Excellence, 2019 RIM Casual wear 4th Runner Up, 2019 Royal International Top 15 Finalist, 2019 RIM International Finalist, 2019 RIM Royal Top Model 2nd Runner up and 2019 RIM Purple Passion 1st Runner up.

Ella's mum Chantelle Hateley says her daughter has matured as a person over the course of the pageant, developing skills in areas like public speaking and interviewing.

"She made so many friends globally and was so confident, she couldn't stop smiling.

She's a completely different child."

While most people have pre-conceived notions of pageantry, influenced by the likes of Miss Congeniality and Toddlers and Tiaras, Ella turns them on their head.

She advocates for her favourite charities, Cranbourne-based Backpacks 4 Vic Kids and the Royal Children's Hospital, and collects donations of clothes, toys and stationery for sick kids. The Royal Children's Hospital is particularly close to Ella's heart as she was born with a rare bone disease, Schmidt metaphysical dysplasia, and has spent many hours in the wards with her mum.

The condition means Ella is only 99 centimetres tall at the age of nine and her bones can also become fragile. It had impacted her confidence and resilience.

Ms Hateley says pageants offer Ella an opportunity to shine despite her condition be herself on stage.

Ella shone at the Royal International Miss Pageant in Orlando.

"As a child herself with a disability, it's given her a platform to feel confident and be herself and advocate for others with similar conditions. She spoke to a lot of new friends overseas about the challenges she's had and what pageantry has done for her."

Ella began competing in pageants last year when she took part in Misses Australia, with no coaching and no expectations of winning, her mother explains.

Now passionate about working the pageant circuit, Ella hopes to compete in Royal International Miss again next year and is already brainstorming ways to tweak her modelling, speeches and routines.

She has also set her sights on acting and modelling in future.

"Now, when she's on stage she doesn't want to leave!" Ms Hateley laughs.

"We are so incredibly proud of her."

Mosque protest is on

By Brendan Rees Opponents of a proposed mosque in Narre Warren North are taking their fight to the state's planning umpire declaring they will "look at every possible avenue to stop this."

Neighbour Terry Ryan says the mosque was inappropriate for the rural area with hundreds of residents looking at seeking legal advice before taking the matter to the Victorian Civil and Administrative Tribunal.

"We think council have made some errors ... we're going to take some advice and make sure our thinking's correct," he said.

It comes after Casey councillors approved plans for a mosque application behind a closed door meeting at Bunjil Place, leaving dozens of people stranded outside the council chamber on Tuesday 16 July.

The angry mob was forced to view a live broadcast of the meeting on a big screen in a room next door.

Protester Valentina Crnkovic said the decision by councillors was "predetermined" with members of the gallery threatened by security "so we can't speak our minds."

"They weren't making a decision in there that was already made, we're not dumb," she said.

"This is all tactics that they're using, it stinks; they're not taking the 773 people's voices into account."

Islamic Council of Victoria spokesman Adel Salman said the proposed mosque was a "very positive step forward" but added there was an "element of Islamophobia at play."

"There are a lot of people who have genuine concerns which are legitimate and they should be heard," he said.

"I definitely don't want to generalise but I think it's through the segment they are using these reasons as a cover for Islamophobia mindset."

"Residents have said to me that regardless of the aesthetics, a large scale building is inappropriate for that site," the Rise Up Australia member said.

When asked if she had concerns about the safety issues that come from Islamic extremism, Cr Crestani said: "Many residents have

expressed to me that migrating from overseas, even from the UK, and settling in Narre Warren North and other parts of Casey, was attempting to get away from Islamic extremism."

She added: "If some residents feel concerned about Islam, they have a right to voice them."

A prominent South East businessman, Adam Khan, said Cr Crestani needed to be held accountable due to her "fear mongering" and "pre-determined bias."

"She has (been) documented as saying she will vote against any mosque. She cites terrorism as a possibility," he said.

"The mosque had ticked all the boxes in terms of the law, both state and local. They complied over and beyond to what the expectations were - and those were the words of the mayor.

Mayor Amanda Stapledon said she respected the objections but considered the plans of the mosque based on its "planning merits."

Road used for ‘racing’

By Brendan Rees An outraged Narre Warren business owner says it's just a matter of time before "someone will get collected" by hoons in an industrial area.

The owner — who asked to remain anonymous — said hoons were using Vesper Drive like a "racetrack" with some reaching speeds as high as 150km/h.

He said a car lost control a few weeks ago and ploughed into a sign at front of his business which allegedly involved a high-powered Ford Mustang.

"We heard the skid and the big bang," he said.

"We get burnouts most weekends and you can just hear them hooning around because they're high powered cars.

"Every half an hour you'll hear something go past at some enormous speed."

He said many families who frequented martial arts and dancing schools nearby were at risk of being "wiped out" by speedsters.

Casey Highway Patrol Leading Senior Constable Mel Hardie said Vesper Drive was "one of many industrial areas" used by hoons and were doing their best to tackle the problem.

"There's multiple areas across Casey, Greater Dandenong, and Cardinia, and they usually go from one spot to the other," she said.

A hoon recently smashed intp a sign on Vesper Drive, Narre Warren.

Police have the power to impound a car for a month if driven by people in a dangerous manner.

"If they continue with that behaviour the vehicle will be forfeited to the state and either crushed or donated to the SES for them to practice their jaws-of-life on," Leading Snr Const Hardie said.

"A lot of people do have dash cams these days and will notify us - and we might not catch them on the night but we will catch up them."

Courts can also impose a fine up to $28,000 and/or imprisonment of up to two years.

Principals ready for schools Families are a step closer to having access to three new primary schools in Casey with principals appointed to start in term one next year.

These new schools - currently under construction - will cater to families living in fastgrowing suburbs.

The schools include Botanic Ridge Primary School, Casey Fields (Five Ways) Primary School, and Clyde North East Primary School.

Principals were appointed following a thorough Department of Education expression of interest process to select some of Victoria's best and brightest educators to lead the schools.

The new schools opening in 2020 are part of the Labor Government's school building boom that will see 100 new government schools open by 2026.

Minister for Education James Merlino said: "We know that Victoria's population is booming, which is why we're building and upgrading schools across the state to meet the needs of our growing communities."

"The appointment of the new principals is another major milestone in the delivery of these exciting new schools," he said.

No place to call home A South East pensioner who is the carer of her elderly parents says she's running out of options to put a roof over their heads.

Linda Ashworth, 55, has been battling to find a two-bedroom unit and although they've been given priority on the social housing waiting list - that wait could be up to two years.

"We've been staying with friends for a couple of weeks in Cranbourne East but like anything they're elderly; they need their lives back on track," she says.

At the end of March there were 41,677 on the State Government's queue for public housing - with 21,713 being priority cases for people experiencing issues with disability, mental health, family violence or homelessness.

The wait list is under pressure as private rents rise faster than wages, Newstart and Commonwealth rent assistance.

Cranbourne Information and Support Service's executive officer Leanne Petrides, who has been supporting Ms Ashworth, said Victoria's public housing shortfall of 103,800 highlighted a "desperate need" for more public and crisis housing.

Ms Ashworth says they have furniture in storage and live out of plastic bags. And now they are faced with little option but to move into a motel by the end of the week.

"Going into a motel means our pensions have to be used to pay for the motel," she says.

Ms Ashworth said she's looked at many private rental properties but "there isn't a great deal out there that's affordable."

"We've got to look for no stairs, and particular things in a rental property which makes the job that little bit harder.

"It's a no win situation," she says.

Her mother Joyce, 81, and 88-year-old father John, who has a pace maker and is wheelchair bound, were in a retirement village in Pakenham until Ms Ashworth's sister bought her parents a home but when the "funds dried up she evicted them last December."

Extended family in Doreen took them into their home but the commute to the south eastern suburbs for her father's medical appointments became too much.

Ms Ashworth said she also met a "deadend" with WAYSS in Berwick, a service that helps people experiencing homelessness, as they could only offer a one bedroom cabin in Tooradin.

"Because of my father's needs it's got to be a two bedroom cabin," she said.

Ms Ashworth says they've contacted their local members of Parliament "but can't seem to pull a rabbit out of hat."

A Victorian Government spokesperson said the Department of Health and Human Services and emergency housing providers were working closely with the family to help them find short term accommodation until longer term public housing became available.

"Public housing provides safe and secure shelter for Victorians who need it the most and we prioritise people managing health, ageing and disability issues such as these - we'll do everything we can to help," the spokesperson said.

Ms Ashworth believes there should be more help offered for those in a similar situation.

"When you've got a dad whose 88 you think to yourself we deserve a little bit better than this."

New support hub opens A new support group dedicated to carers is being established at the Lynbrook Community Centre, thanks to a partnership between the City of Casey and Uniting.

Through its 2019-20 budget, council has provided funding for the establishment of the Lynbrook Carers Hub, which will be run by Uniting on a weekly basic, kicking off on Friday 19 July.

The hub will be a space for carers to connect with other carers, access carer supports and look after their wellbeing, with weekly activities and guest speakers.

City of Casey mayor Amanda Stapledon encouraged local carers to come along and for residents to spread the word to carers they know in the Casey community.

"Carers do such an amazing job, and this is one of the ways we want to help give them support, friendship and some time out for themselves," Cr Stapledon said.

"There are many people in our community who have assumed a primary caring role looking after a loved one who might have a disability, illness or is ageing.

"As a carer, it is important to look after your own health and wellbeing and we hope that the Lynbrook Carers Hub will provide some muchneeded support to the carers in our community; it is also important not to be isolated.

"This initiative was one of the key projects I pushed to support during my Mayoral term as it's something I'm very passionate about, and I'm thrilled to see that the Lynbrook Carers Hub is now launching in a partnership with Uniting."

Felicity Preston from Uniting, who will be facilitating the weekly sessions, said that their

City of Casey Mayor Cr Amanda Stapledon, Felicity Preston from Uniting and local carers Vanassa Gerdes and Vanessa Watson are looking forward to the launch of the Lynbrook Carers Hub. organisation has seen the benefit that an ongoing support groups can provide for carers, having implemented carer hubs and peer support opportunities in other regions.

"We're excited about this opportunity to work alongside City of Casey in establishing a regular and consistent support for carers in their community, especially as the aged and disability sectors are experiencing such drastic changes," she said.

"Our aim is that the hub will create a safe space for support and emotional wellbeing, but also provide practical tips as we incorporate educational speakers and workshops. This initiative is a recognition of the valuable contribution of the caring role in the community."

Until now the practice has only taken new clients on referral.

Mr Muaremov said the time was right to take on new clients, who will be assigned to his team of four qualified accountants.

“We have capped our client numbers for the last 10 years but my team is eager and ready to take on their own client loads,“ he explained.

Mr Muaremov opened his eponymous business 20 years ago.

He was headed for a life as a lawyer until the arrival of a daughter with wife Merita when he was barely 20 meant he had to eschew study for a paying job as a clerk. He eventually went back to school to study accounting and opened his own practice in 1999 when he was just 26.

It turned out to be a fortunate turn of events.

Wife Merita has been by Michael’s side as the business has gone from strength to strength, and works in the office part- time Eldest daughter Fabiola has worked in the family business for 10 years and is now the practice manager.

Second daughter Deanna has followed in her father’s footsteps and is an accountant.

Third daughter Leonora is doing her VCE and hopes to become a mid-wife.

HELP FEED THE NEEDY THIS WINTER PARKLEA’S Winter Food Drive is on again this year, with locations throughout the Cardinia Shire welcoming donations.

Now in its fourth year, the annual Food Drive provides residents with the opportunity to donate non-perishable food and personal hygiene products to help those in need.

This year, Parklea hopes to reach even more families and individuals, with new businesses volunteering to be drop off locations.

During July and August, local residents can drop non-perishable food and personal hygiene products to Arena Café at Arena Shopping Centre, the Timber Mill Café or the Timbertop Land Sales Office in the Timbertop Estate, the Kaduna Park Land Sales Office and Cardinia Life (Aligned Leisure) in Officer.

“With the support of local businesses, we hope to provide more families with muchneeded food throughout winter,“ said Jarod Mills, Sales and Marketing Manager at Parklea.

“As a developer in the South East, Parklea is committed to helping improve the wellbeing and quality of life of those living in and around our communities.

“We encourage local residents and businesses to give generously, and thank them for their continued support,” said Mr Mills.

The Winter Food Drive is one of Parklea’s community initiatives, including a Christmas gift drive, aimed at supporting local families doing it tough. Parklea also supports a variety of local community groups, events, and charities throughout the South East.

All Food Drive donations will be distributed via Windermere, a Narre Warren-based community service organisation and charity that supports vulnerable local families and individuals with food, shelter, counselling, training and financial assistance.

for spaghetti bolognese. Personal hygiene products would also be valuable donations and are encouraged as well.

By Mitchell Clarke The Community Arts Festival, held by the Berwick Church of Christ, drew hundreds of guests to the township of Berwick on Saturday 20 July.

Held as part of the churches 150th birthday celebrations, the event is also in conjunction with the City of Casey’s Winter Arts Festival.

During the 2019 Arts Trail, nine artists partnered with local businesses, showcasing their work in shopfronts.

Gallery Director at Bunjil Place Georgia Cribb said the judges were challenged by the incredible creativity and diversity in the works of art.

“The four judges considered how the nine works addressed the theme Berwick - Yesterday, Today and Tomorrow,“ Ms Cribb said.

“Some of the artists approached the theme in a more literal graphical style where others offered a more symbolic interpretation.“ In first place, Paul Reid won the $1500 prize, Saskia Rochow took out second prize while Gino and Judy Ciancio were commended for their works.

Committee Chair Charmaine Vis said the entire event was a celebration and gift to the community.

“It’s huge, it’s colourful and it will surprise, delight and inspire you,“ Ms Vis said.

“We have tried to bring you something new and fresh for the local community and those visiting the festival from out of town.“ The Arts Trail will be on display until Monday 29 July.

By Tyler Lewis After a second loss by less than 10 points in as many weeks, this time to Geelong 5.18 (48) to 5.9 (39), the run home is now even more important for Casey in the VFL. But although the next four matches for the Demons are do or die, coach Sam Radford is backing his charges in to get it done if they can compete for the full 120 minutes.

“We aren’t going to be making too many changes at this time of the year - we just need to play our footy for four quarters and be consistent,” he said.

After a sluggish and contested start, Mykelti Lefau welcomed Cat Sam Menegola back to footy by running him into the turf on the wing - resulting in Jay Kennedy-Harris’ and the Demons’ first, before Lefau himself tumbled a ball from the stoppage for another major.

With the wind in the opening term, the Demons had the Cats on the ropes - keeping Geelong scoreless at the first break and at one

stage having 17 inside 50s to just two.

Geelong in the second term, despite keeping the Demons goalless, proved that the opening term dominance wasn’t due to the conditions.

An arm-wrestle of a contest began in the third term as the wind died down and Geelong threatened - but the Cats weren’t applying it to the scoreboard as the Casey backline, led by youngster Tom Freeman, was springboarding at any given opportunity.

At the final break, Casey had already nailed a mammoth 86 tackles but Radford urged his side that more energy at the contest would get it done.

Just moments in, Geelong’s Quinton Narkle - who had three behinds to his name - shrugged a tackle and squeezed the kick through to give the Cats their first lead of the day a minute into the last.

After the Cats missed several opportunities, Josh Jordan got it within a kick and Jaxon Briggs

ran around his opponent to snap it all square.

After coming home hot, Scott Selwood pounced on a turnover and kicked the last major to put a dagger into the Demons.

Casey laid an incredible 117 tackles for the match, with Radford explaining the ferocity around the contest is the way his side likes to play.

“All year we have been the number one tackling team,” he said.

“We have been putting the pressure on and it’s something our VFL guys have done really well, like Jimmy Munro had 11 tackles, he always leads the way.

“We just know we have to put a fair bit of pressure on these talented sides.

“I think Geelong had 18 or 19 AFL-listed players and if we aren’t putting pressure on the ball we will get chopped up.”

The Demons will take on Sandringham at Trevor Barker Oval on Sunday, in what looms as a crunch clash.

The Warriors’ winning ways continue

By Romy Stephens It was a big weekend for Pakenham in Round 17 Big V Basketball action, with only one team failing to secure a win.

The Division 2 men reclaimed some winning form as they recorded a solid 86-65 win over Mornington at Mornington Basketball Stadium on Sunday afternoon. In what was an important game for the Warriors to regain some confidence, it comes as no surprise that Josh Dow (22 points) stood tall when needed.

He found plenty of support through the likes of Ash Szalek (15 points and 9 rebounds) and Robin Maartens (13 points and 5 rebounds).

The Warriors remain in fourth spot on the ladder.

Similar to the men, the Division 2 women also found themselves back on the winners list with a convincing 96-51 win over the North East Bushrangers.

Pakenham was up against a persistent Steelers unit but, in the end, the Warriors made the most of their opportunities and finished with a 96-65 win. Ned Weideman was once again a standout for the Warriors with 22 points and 16 rebounds.

Despite holding a two-game winning streak, the Warriors still sit one game below the first-placed Cragieburn on the ladder.

The Youth League 2 women were unable to uphold the success of the other Pakenham

teams, as they were demolished by a formidable first-placed Frankston outfit on Saturday.

The Warriors' inefficiency was costly in the 102-44 loss and they were simply outclassed by the Blues who created numerous scoring opportunities through turnovers.

But the Warriors will take some confidence from the fact that every single player in the side registered a score.

Looking ahead to Round 18, the Division 2 men will be looking for a big scalp as they take on second-placed Camberwell at Balwyn High School on Saturday. The following day, the Warriors face the sixth-placed Cragieburn at home.

On Saturday, a women's double-header at home will tip off from 6pm as the Division 2 and Youth League 2 sides both line up against Coburg.

The Youth League 2 men will take on Keysborough on Saturday afternoon before looking to dethrone Cragieburn from top spot at midday on Sunday.

“We were really hard on Hayden, as a coaching group, but in reflection he actually had a really good day in the end and in the last quarter he nearly got us over the line.”

Dandenong Stingrays coach Nick Cox tested the resilience of top five prospect Hayden Young, but after a telling performance against Sandringham on Sunday, Young can add another string to his extensive draft bow come November.

After being followed closely by a number of opponents, Young picked his side up off the canvas and 45 seconds of brilliance almost won them the game.

After a slow start, Dandenong needed a steadier, and Ashton Williamson darted down his opponent and put through his first, giving his side the momentum into the first break.

The second term saw several changes in momentum, and the Stingrays clawed back into the contest through the obvious yet unstoppable set play of Bailey Schmidt to Young on his left from the middle.

Livewire Ned Cahill influenced the contest by launching a goal from beyond the paint of 50 then setting up Williamson for his second to get his side well within the game.

The Stingrays were slow out of the blocks after the main break, with Fischer McAsey kicking two in the term as his side jumped out to a four goal lead at the final interval.

After pressing for the best part of 18 minutes without the reward, Hayden Young grabbed the game by the scruff of the neck and willed his side back into the contest through what was a remarkable passage of play.

Winning the ball at a half-back stoppage, Young looked to the corridor with the hands and then got on his bike to get it back, and closing in on 55 metres he launched a goal that dropped the jaws of everyone looking on.

Only seconds later at the very next centre bounce, Young emerged again to link up with Cahill and slam home another - this time on his right foot.

When Williamson snuck through his third and with four minutes on the clock, there were two goals in it. After three goals in as many minutes, there was some instant life in the Dandenong side.

The Dragons ultimately held on as the ball fittingly ended in the hands of Riley Bowman, the Stingrays’ inaugural premiership ruckman.

Despite losing another game - 10.9 (69) to 9.8 (62) - in a disappointing month of football as a collective, Cox was impressed with some of the improvement as individuals.

Sam De Koning has made a name for himself over the past year as a key defender, but Cox is trying his best to display his versatility.

“We always like to win but the other thing is we play players in positions that enhances their draft prospects,” he said.

“Sam has obviously been touted as one of the better defenders in the country but I think he has really shown over the past few weeks how versatile he can be.”

Bailey Schmidt also returned from a stint in the VFL playing for Frankston, a move that Cox believes has improved him as a player.

“I was really happy with Bailey, he took multiple marks, won lots of hitouts and I thought controlled the clearances,” he said.

“He has come back better than what we sent him off so that is a credit to the system at Frankston and also a credit to Bailey for training better.”

Standing together as one

By Russell Bennett "When all seems lost, it's about understanding that there is light at the end of the tunnel - even if you can't necessarily see it right now."

That is one of the clear messages to take on-board from Hampton Park Junior Football Club's third ever running of its 'Legends Game', which welcomes a host of the club's favourite sons back to the fold.

This year, on 4 August, the beloved community event - run in conjunction with Matt Runnalls' Mindfull Aus - has a real emphasis on cultural diversity, in addition to its usual mental health focus.

The last 'Legends Game', in 2017, came almost exactly six months after the sudden passing of former Hampton Park junior Shaun Ross - who had ongoing mental health struggles.

He had a heart of gold, but lived a troubled life from a young age. Yet through the darkness of his passing, there is a light that constantly shines in his honour - to help, along with the likes of Mindfull and the Hampton Park JFC, people in their own mental health struggles.

Mindfull Australia is a suicide prevention charity founded by Runnalls - Shaun's great friend, and former club-mate at the Cora Lynn Football Netball Club.

Mindfull's purpose is to encourage those affected by mental health battles to come out of the shadows of stigma through self-acceptance, and education of the wider community.

At the time he founded Mindfull, Runnalls was a 24-year-old tradie who played country footy. He had no real financial worries, his professional life was in order, and he had a strong network of family and friends. But since the age of 17 he's battled severe anxiety and depression, which led to several suicide attempts.

The Hampton Park Junior Football Club is home to a large number of members from the Indigenous community, and the jumpers to be worn in the upcoming clash in August have been specially-designed by one such member - Leigh Gittens.

"I've been involved with the club for the past nine years and Chris (club president Chris Adair) has asked me for the past couple of years to design a guernsey, and we've finally got one," Gittens said.

"We've got a very multicultural club here one that's very friendly and family-oriented.

No one is left out."

Runnalls expanded even further.

"I've only been involved with the club for three or so years through Chris, but just the way the whole club, not only Chris, has opened its doors to me and the concept of these con-

versations with the community is really comforting to see," he said.

"To change the concept of the 'Legends Game' this year just slightly to involve a different demographic and background is a really beautiful thing.

"It's something that I want to get behind, and it's something we'd like to do more work with at Mindfull - involving a diverse range of communities - and Hampton Park is a fantastic representation of that.

"We have more of a youth focus on this event this year in the rooms afterwards and we want to really get a lot of the juniors to come in and hear these messages.

"To be able to represent a different culture, but one that's paramount here in the area, is something that'll open up the doors for a lot of people to seek comfort and I think it's a beautiful thing that this club is doing.

"It's an awesome initiative, and I can't wait to see everyone in these jumpers.

"We've seen the rates of indigenous youth suicide, and it's about getting the kids back to culture, remembering their heritage, and connecting back to their roots.

"That's why this club does such a fantastic job. This is a fantastic initiative and one that Mindfull Aus is rapt to be supportive of, and be a part of."

Adair spoke about the Redbacks providing a constant source of support to all their members - regardless of background or culture.

"We've always been big on looking after our indigenous families, and we're really proud of their contribution to our club," he said.

"Mindfull has also been a big part of our club for the past three years so, between that and our past players, it should be a cracking day. They're three things that are really important to our club."

Adair also spoke about the significance of the jumper designs for the upcoming clash.

"The small circles represent the players, and the largest circle and the second largest circle are the captain and the vice-captain, so that's the leadership and these are all the directions people have come from to be here," he said, pointing to the front of the jumper.

"On the back is Bunjil, the creator."

The Hampton Park Junior Football Club 'Legends Game' will be held on 4 August at the Cairns Road Recreation Reserve from 2.30pm, with a dinner and presentation from Mindfull to follow.

These WGCA girls can play The Bendigo Community Bank of Lang Lang is backing the West Gippsland Cricket Association (WGCA) All Stars Girls cricket competition, and together they're calling on clubs right across the region to get involved.

All West Gippsland clubs have been urged to embrace the development and encourage their female supporters to don the gear to play cricket.

The competition is approaching its third season and girls cricket organisers are hoping many more clubs are able to field a team.

Last season six teams enjoyed the thrill of whacking a six or rattling the stumps. There were often many cheers of delight as the girls hit the mark.

"The WGCA has been fortunate to capture the support of the Lang Lang Community Bendigo Bank as its chief sponsor," said WGCA president Bob Taylor.

"We will be able to expand numbers and support volunteers in their efforts to assist the girls to thrive on the social connection that arises out of cricket.

"The benefits of this latest recreation development are many.

"So far we have seen Upper Beaconsfield, Beaconsfield, Kooweerup, Officer, Nyora and Carlisle Park revelling in the atmosphere of girls cricket on a Monday night. However there are 19 clubs in the WGCA so its time our remaining clubs accepted the challenge and joined the blossoming trend of providing another outlet for female sport.

"We are prepared to assist any club that accepts this test. The WGCA has applied for, and has been successful in receiving, grants for growing girls cricket. With the help of Cricket Victoria we have purchased equipment and paid for assistance for volunteers so that it is easier to field the teams."

The girls season will commence again in November after a season launch and some skills sessions aimed at helping girls become accustomed to honing the traditional skills of batting and bowling in cricket.
