By Jed Lanyon The state government announced that they will be giving local communities the support they need to lead the clean-up and recovery efforts after the bushfires that devastated southeast Victoria.

Minister for Police and Emergency Services Lisa Neville joined Emergency Management Commissioner Andrew Crisp at the Woori Yallock Incident Control Centre for the announcement on Wednesday 13 March.

"Today we're announcing that the state government will lead the clean-up of private properties in the fire affected communities right across the region," Ms Neville said.

"The bushfires in south-east Victoria have had a devastating impact on communities and people's lives."

"We will support communities every step of the way, so they can recover and get back on their feet."

Ms Neville said that councils will employ local contractors to clean public areas affected by bushfires.

make sure we can take some of the burden off them as they now enter the period of trying to recover and rebuild following these fires," Ms Neville said.

"This means that we will ensure that we have one contractor who can go in and work with these communities to clean up houses or buildings or septic tanks or burnt cars that might be on most properties.

Mr Crisp said that on Monday 11 March, there were 18 ongoing fires in the state and by Wednesday 13 March the number had been reduced to nine.

"I just want people to understand how much work is still involved for our fire fighters.

"However, we're in a very good position in terms of the ongoing fires at the moment," Mr Crisp said.

Mr Crisp said that Victorian staff and resources had been stretched thin, and thanked interstate fire fighters for their efforts.

He said that 43 fire fighters from New Zealand will arrive on Friday 15 March to assist.

Anyone who has been affected by the bushfires should contact their local council to find out about the clean-up and funding assistance available to them.

I wonder when the community consultation will start. Or if state government departments even need to pay lip service to that concept.

The track record on this sort of thing is that once the department head has made a decision it becomes a fait accompli, and the Healesville community can just go jump.

As a resident of Don Valley l have spent two exhausting years begging for answers on the Haining Farm Fire Report.

It should have been easy, even simple, but it has been impossible.

If all have engaged with our community then why have l had to submit a report of questions to the Ombudsman to get answers on our fire safety?

I am beyond angry. I feel sheer disappointment for the lack of respect for the Yarra Valley community. No wonder people are angry state-wide.

I have been actively trying to engage with all our fire agencies for two years but they don't like to be questioned.

It has been too easy to just not answer our concerns. This is the other part of the story that no one wants to hear about.

Fighting for fire community safety

At about 3:55PM 15 March, a motorcycle collided with a four-wheel-drive on Olinda-Monbulk Rd near the intersection of Upper Coonara Road, Olinda.

The 64-year-old male rider died at the scene. Kilsyth.

The female driver and only occupant of the vehicle was treated for minor physical injuries.

Witnesses to the incident or anyone who saw the motorcycle travelling in the area prior to the collision are sought.

The male was riding a blue Suzuki sports bike and was wearing a dark jacket, a fluorescent yellow full face helmet and blue pants.

By Michael Doran The Yarra Waterways Group are so concerned about the increased bushfire risk in the region that last week they placed a Public Notice in this newspaper to inform the community about the issue.

Chairperson of the local community group, Susan Hotton of Yarra Junction, said the public notice was to tell the relevant authorities and ministers they would be held accountable for their inaction.

"In February we sent a letter out to the minister of environment, minister for planning, the heads of DELWP, Melbourne Water, Parks Victoria and other relevant people," she said.

"We advised we were holding them responsible if anything happens because of increased bushfire risk in the Upper Yarra Valley from the planned revegetation of the waterways."

The Yarra Waterways Group has been going for four years and has more than 200 members. The group was formed in response to the push to extend the contentious Yellingbo Conservation Area (YCA) further into the Upper Yarra Valley, a move they believe unacceptably increases the bushfire risk to residents.

"We sent a petition with more than 1300 signatures to the minister of environment and she acknowledged that there is a problem in this area due to high bushfire risk and adjusted the revegetation zone back to within 10 metres of the water.

"The next step would be if the government will confirm the 10 metre revegetation zone with the balance of the crown land to go back to the landowners to take care of," Mrs Hot-

Victorians can expect smoke in Melbourne and across the Victorian landscape over the coming days as a result of multiple fires burning across the state.

Firefighters are working hard to control more than a dozen fires burning mostly in the east and southeast of Victoria, which will take time and means there will be an increased level of smoke which might be unhealthy for some people.

As part of firefighting operations, back burning is occurring to protect life and property. Residents in the surrounding areas can expect increase in aircrafts to assist in back burning, including aircranes.

Adcare is truly caring

By Jed Lanyon The Adcare community op shop's dedication to helping the Yarra Ranges community continues.

The op shop recently made a donation of $4000 to Warburton Primary School.

Half of the money raised will go towards supporting the school's harvest cafe.

Within the program, children participate in two hour block lessons, planting, harvesting, preparing and cooking food, shared meal times, garden design and garden creation.

The generous donation allowed for the purchase of six garden bed planter boxes, construction materials, garden archways, furniture to upgrade the garden and learning area.

As well as mulch, seeds, plants, ingredients to enhance the cooking element of the program and the purchase of seed and fruit dehydrator to assist with seed collection for future planting and dehydration of excess produce

for consumption throughout the year.

Teacher Kerri Middleton thanked Kathy Kearns and the Adcare staff for their donation.

"Our harvest cafe program is run for all students from prep to grade six.

"It is an essential element of our sustainability environmental science and social emotional learning programs," she said.

"It is able to operate at a consistent high standard as a result of generous community support."

Warburton Primary School's business manager Cheryl, says that this sort of funding is vital for their school programs to survive.

"It's essential, we're a little school and there's not a lot of money so it means the program keeps on running," she said.

The op shop gives annual donations to schools in the region to help boost their budget.

ACL is our Achilles heel ACL (anterior cruciate ligament) knee injuries in female sports has increased dramatically in Australia in recent years, correlating positively with the huge uptake of AFL by girls and women. In fact, there have been up to 43% (74% under 25 years) more ACL injuries over the past five years The peak rate of these injuries occur during the age of 15-19 years old & are likely due to increased participation levels and changes during puberty, plus a range of other physiological factors.

The ACL's primary role is to resist excessive anterior translation and medial rotation of the tibia (lower leg) in relation to the femur (thigh bone).

It is more commonly torn in women than men for a number of reasons: ligament is smaller and less strong in female

These programs focus on improving strength and control of movement (including balance and agility) that can easily be incorporated into routine warm-ups for training and games. Not only do these programs reduce the risk of injury, but they also performance of players completing the program (increased

strength, improved movement patterns and balance/agility).

In Australia such programs are readily available to sports clubs and trainers: the FIFA 11+ for soccer, FootyFirst for AFL and the netball KNEE program for netball.

One downside of the above programs is that they often take 20-25 minutes to complete, and when coaches only have their players for 1-2 hours of training they are reticent to spend this time on preventative training.

Our physiotherapy team have developed our own abridged version to assist local coaches, parents and trainers in the implementation of these programs. Evidence is unclear whether a shorter version is just as effective but the best exercise is the one that gets done.

Farewell for Des Kirk

By Michael Doran Hundreds of people turned out for the service held at Heritage Pioneers Chapel in Woori Yallock on 28 February to celebrate the life of Des Kirk.

Des started life in Oakleigh and his wife Debbie said that on his last day of school he went home, turned the record player up to full and belted out Schools Out by Alice Cooper while thinking of a future working on cars.

A lot of people in the Yarra Valley are grateful he did because for the last 18 years he repaired their cars, trucks, boats, floats and anything else that he could paint from his business, Des Kirk Panels, in Woori Yallock.

Debbie said that Des was a familiar sight charging around town on his electric scooter with his faithful dog, Pepper, by his side.

She said "Even people who didn't know him recognised him on that scooter and waved."

Apart from his business and family, Des Des Kirk of Woori Yallock passed away on 19 February 2019.

loved the Boy Scout movement and was a Cub Leader from 2002 until 2010 at the Woori Yallock Scout Group.

"He loved the kids and it was really nice to see so many of them, some with their own children, come and farewell him," Debbie said.

"I would often hear him working out in his shed and the music would go right up when an AC/DC song came on."

Another passion was going up to his caravan in Eildon where he had a ski-boat and spent most of his time with a queue of young people lined up for a ride on his boat.

The last few years were a struggle for Des health-wise but Debbie said he was still putting a smile on peoples faces right up until he passed away on 19 February, way too soon at 57 years of age.

"He put a smile on a lot of faces and I hope people remember him for a long time to come," said Debbie.

Along with Debbie, Des is survived by his son Russell and daughter Melissa.

Art of speech hits home

By Michael Doran The Melbourne International Comedy Festival is one of the three largest comedy festivals in the world and proudly nestled in this year's line-up is a special night that requires a journey only as far as The Memo in Healesville.

For its second year, Healesville Toastmasters is presenting 'The Art of Speech Festival' on Friday 29 and Saturday 30 March, culminating in the Saturday evening 'Comedy in the Valley' extravaganza.

The festival, whose sponsors include Yarra Ranges council, Healesville Community Bank and Healesville Lions Club, showcases how to use speech, how to craft it but most of all how to have fun with it.

Bruce Argyle, a member of the organising team, said the focus is on family friendly, intelligent humour and that more than 400 attended the 2018 event.

"We put it together as a celebration of speech and a way of presenting it in all of its forms, reminiscent of the John Clarke and Bryan Dawe genre," he said. "There is poetry, a community debate, speeches, music and plenty of comedy that will appeal to all ages."

The Saturday program includes the debate on 'Who would you rather be ruled by - cats or dogs?' with the audience playing a role evaluating the merits of the two arguments.

There will also be a range of interactive, creative workshops led by specialists where anyone can join small groups of 20 and learn from the experts.

'Comedy in the Valley', led by Bruce Argyle and Tina Dalen, is the theme for the evening dinner and performances. As well as a very quirky but delicious dinner, there will be five acts, including Yarra Valley FM favourite Strange Business, a jester, comedians, musi-

cians and funny, yet award winning speechmakers from Toastmasters.

Stange Business is the brainchild of Mr Argyle and his comedic partner, Lindsay Frost and involves a series of interviews with people involved in the strangest of occupations, such as hammock tester, bean counter, mattress tester, budgie trainer and umbrella maker.

Tina Dalen said that while the weekend is about the cleverness of words, it's really just a whole lot of fun for everyone, even if they have never heard of Toastmasters.

"Everything is original material written for the festival and the Saturday 'discusstation' dinner adds another dimension to the night," she said. "The menu is a secret but I can say it will be something outlandish."

Study on social housing to look at affordability aspects

By Derek Schlennstedt Yarra Ranges Council is running a feasibility study on a proposal for affordable housing for older women and people with a disability in Lilydale, following conversations with the community.

Councillors endorsed Housing First, in partnership with Melba Support Services, as Council's social housing advisors during the feasibility study, ata recent meeting.

Housing First will work alongside Six Degrees Architects to undertake the study.

The study, which will run until mid-November, will look at different densities for the site at 67-69 Anderson Street, such as having 12-20 units on the site, and other issues such as vegetation and traffic.

Yarra Ranges Mayor, Tony Stevenson, said that, if the project goes ahead, it would provide vital housing for people with disability and older single women who are at high risk of homelessness.

"These are two groups in our community who are at high risk of housing stress and being in insecure housing, and finding stable alternatives in this area is not easy or affordable," Cr Stevenson said.

"We're committed to doing what we can to increase housing affordability, and this is a great opportunity to explore using Councilowned land for suitable housing developments that will help some of the most vulnerable members of our community.

"We're also advocating for reforms to the state planning policies, so affordable housing

right across the state, and we're not immune to it in the Yarra Ranges," Cr Stevenson said.

"This site gives us a good opportunity to investigate providing high-quality, well-designed housing for vulnerable people in our community, close to public transport, services, shops and parks.

"We're looking forward to working with Housing First, Melba Support Services and our consultant Six Degrees and getting some more information and concepts back to the community about mid-year."

After the study has finished, the proposal will return to Council to determine what's next.

The feasibility study is funded by a State Government Social Housing Investment Planning (SHIP) grant.

The feasibility study's first stage began in mid-February, with a physical assessment of the site and the traffic needs around it and Arborist and geotechnical investigations.

Cr Stevenson said consultation will be a key part of the feasibility study and residents will be given opportunities to understand the project in more detail and learn about social housing and wider housing issues in Yarra Ranges that affect many people.

Debut for Kinglake author

By Michael Doran Some parents may despair that their teenagers prefer a screen to a book but that's not the case in the Huggins household in Kinglake.

Aaron Huggins is a book person and on Sunday 31 March this 15 year old high school student's first novel, Live a Little, will be launched in Kinglake.

The publishers say "Live a Little is the first in the Rastis Melchior series, from debut author Aaron Huggins, who bursts onto the scene with this confident and mature - and hilarious - sci-fi murder mystery."

Aaron is in Year 10 at Yea High School and he said that creative writing has always been something he has enjoyed since primary school in Kinglake.

"I've always enjoyed reading which I guess would have influenced my writing a fair bit," he said. "I started writing when we did a book of short stories at primary school and then I did after school writing classes.

"I do read some sci-fi books and the murder mystery bit I mostly get from watching TV shows," he said when asked about the inspiration for his book. "I guess I just had an idea and I wanted to get it down and see how it looks on paper rather than just in my head."

The writing process took around four months and although there were a few writers-block moments he found the book was "mostly easy to write. I just sort of wrote when inspiration struck me and I wrote a lot of it in the school holidays."

Body Remembers it well

By Jed Lanyon One of Australia's most renowned contemporary artists Tracey Moffatt brings her Body Remembers project to the TarraWarra Museum of Art. Opening on 23 March 2019, the first Victorian showing of Ms Moffatt's photographic series Body Remembers 2017 and video work Vigil 2017 from her widely-acclaimed 57th Venice Biennale exhibition.

Through a series of ten ochre-hued photographs, Body Remembers recalls a history that is at once personal and universal, alluding to Ms Moffatt's own matrilineal history of domestic servitude and the broader experience of colonisation.

The highly evocative photographs depict a 1950s maid, played by the artist herself, who is stranded on an isolated colonial property.

Set in a deserted, dreamlike landscape, the photographs evoke a vexed emotional terrain, one that is imbued with both yearning and mourning, longing and sorrow.

As Ms Moffatt described, 'the images play with time back and forth: the maid remembers the past, or projects herself into the future, where the house she works in has become a ruin.'

Screening in the same space is Vigil 2017, a two-minute film montage that juxtaposes footage from the 2010 Christmas Island asylum seeker boat capsizing disaster with images drawn from Hollywood films.

The work creates a sense of absurdity, suspense and chaos.

TarraWarra Museum of Art Director, Victoria Lynn, said, 'A renowned photographer and filmmaker, Tracey Moffatt's work is distinguished by its exploration of Australia's colonial past through implied and unsettling narratives.

The photographs' allusions to the ongoing legacy of colonisation and the video's dramatic montage of footage which highlights the consequences of our attitudes towards refugees, together reverberate powerfully with broader concerns about identity and place.'

Tracey Moffatt's series Body Remembers 2017.

Hotel Mumbai is a gripping thriller dramatising the devastating November 2008 terror attacks in Mumbai, which included a massacre in the famous Taj Mahal Palace Hotel.

Taut and streamlined, Hotel Mumbai does an excellent job of building character through their actions: we become deeply invested in the main characters through their relationships and their myriad acts of courage and selflessness (and, in some cases, cowardice) as they struggle to survive.

The film makes great use of setting and geography in amplifying the tension: not only are Special Forces miles and hours away in New Dehli, but the vast Taj hotel is quickly segmented into smaller and more

claustrophobic sections, as the survivors are wrenched apart and the gunmen methodically prowl the hallways.

Hotel Mumbai has sharp sound design and visceral, uncompromising violence, and even the cinematography contributes to the frantic atmosphere. Before the primary attack in the hotel, the camerawork is fixed and steady in the opulent, tightly-controlled interior of the Taj Hotel, but looser and shakier in the bustling streets outside; when the horror of the attacks breaches the hotel, the camerawork inside the hotel becomes more unsteady as the situation breaks down.

Moreover, the plot keeps us dreadfully on our toes with its willingness to kill off characters we've grown deeply attached to.

Hotel Mumbai is a harrowing, exceptionally efficient thriller and a gruelling glimpse into a very recent tragedy.

Cricket grand finals here

By Chris Anderson Finals arrived this weekend, and with it brought a whole new level of intensity and nervousness.

In DJ Strachan Shield, the Semi Final clash between Mount Evelyn and Warburton-Millgrove was a tense affair as both teams struggled with the bat under the intense pressure of finals cricket.

Warburton-Millgrove gladly accepted the opportunity to bat in brilliant conditions on day one, but found it extremely difficult from the outset.

The Burras openers, Tyson Walker and Finn Saurine fell victim early and the innings battled to get off the ground.

Young star Bailey Humphrey and the experienced Liam Barnard seemed to have the visitors back on track, but their steadying partnership was broken when it was on the verge of blossoming.

From there the wheels fell off as Kane Jones, Darcy Fraser and Gareth Fraser ripped through an unsuspecting and impatient Burras lineup to see them quickly fall from 2/30 to 9/47.

The Mounters had them reeling, and there was a real prospect of the visitors being dismissed before afternoon tea for less than 50.

Wise heads, Adam Humphrey and Cam Darwall, proceeded to resurrect the floundering innings just purely and simply by putting some value on their wickets.

Although the resistance didn't last long after tea, the pair had pushed the total to 89, and had given the Burras a whisker of hope.

There were times the Mounters looked in control, but that was inevitably broken with an ill-timed wicket.

Stuart Thompson was brilliant up front, and his extended opening spell, which netted

three wickets, gave the Burras real hope of a remarkable upset.

When stumps were drawn, Mount Evelyn had limped to 5/61.

Thompson would finish with a five wicket haul, but his team didn't produce enough runs on day one.

Mt Evelyn would scrape through with just three wickets in hand.

In the other DJ Strachan Shield semi-final, Seville hosted Wandin, and the home team made all the running on day one.

Although he lost his opening partner early, Tim Thorne wasn't about to sit and watch his team suffer a similar fate as they did in the last round being bowled out for 50.

His cavalier approach put a bit of effort onus back on the Seville bowlers who have been largely unchallenged over recent months through skilful, economical bowling.

Unfortunately for the Bulldogs, Thorne's cameo just didn't last long enough to seriously challenge the home team.

The Bulldogs would follow with a host of starts, but regular wickets would inevitably halt their progress.

Even with the score at 4/74 approaching tea, the visitors had the opportunity to push the total to a challenging one, particularly with Edwards at the wicket.

The opportunity wouldn't be taken, and the Bulldogs would soon lose 4/14 to put the skids on the innings. Marcus Smith (5/46) and Andy Kay (2/20) proved irrepressible through the middle part of the innings as they ground it to a halt.

Wandin would find some bonus runs through their tail, but were bowled out for a disappointing 110, considering there were windows of hope throughout the early part of the innings.

Father and son duo, Liam Kay and Andrew Kay ensured the Blues would reach stumps on day one without too much drama, finishing the day on 1/26.

That leaves Mount Evelyn and Seville to fight it out in the grand final.

In RA Finger Trophy action, Woori Yallock established themselves as the team to beat as they brushed past Mount Evelyn to book their place in next week's decider after just one day of action.

The day started brightly enough for the Mounters as openers Darren Westaway and Luke Paterson showed they were up for the fight getting through the opening overs unscathed, but once the wheel started turning the Tigers way, the visitors found it hard to wrestle back the initiative.

0/27 was soon 3/32, and the Woori Yallock bowlers took control of the contest.

Mt Evelyn would eventually fall for 115.

Woori Yallock raced to the total within 18 overs without the loss of a wicket.

Ryan Smith (74 not out) and Mick Dwyer (39 not out) were imperious in their pursuit of victory.

Woori Yallock's Grand Final opponents will be Gruyere after they outlasted Seville in a tight contest.

Playing in the wide expanses of the Coldstream Reserve, Jake McInness ensured the Blues would start on the front foot, and a 37 run opening partnership with Matt Hadlum had them travelling in the right direction.

It wasn't a complete annihilation, but when batters numbered three to nine don't reach double figures; your team is in a spot of bother.

A late cameo from Cameron Laycock avoided total disaster, but the total still failed to reach three figures as Seville were bowled out for 95.

Gruyere didn't manage the remainder of day one with much aplomb either, and kept Seville in the contest finishing on 3/27 at the end of day one.

With the game on a tightrope, the experienced pairing of Matt Tilney (37 not out) and Rowan Prouse (26 not out) ensured that the Scorpions would have little difficulty in keeping things together in pursuit of the relatively small total.

They would pass the total with just the loss of one wicket on day two to book themselves a date with Woori Yallock in the RA Finger Trophy Final.
