By Philip Salama-West Approximately 48 kilometres East of Melbourne’s CBD, Clyde is situated near the border of the City of Casey and Cardinia Shire, nestled between the South Eastern Suburbs and the rural shires of the Greater Gippsland region.

This piece serves to highlight the greatest aspects of life in Clyde, and the people living in the area.

Clyde’s location is representative of its vibrant and geographically diverse nature, with delightful views and rural tranquillity mixing with the comforts and convenience of the suburbs.

Clyde is one of the fastest growing local areas of its size in Victoria, and has been rapidly expanding to accommodate the many growing families and newcomers who’ve arrived to call the area home.

Though the national census calculated that Clyde had 11,117 inhabitants in 2021, the region has seen huge levels of growth in the intervening few years, and is now estimated by services such as Area Finder and Informed Decisions to be home to over 20,000 people, a truly gargantuan population growth - an over 800 per cent increase from the population calculations done in the 2016 census which found Clyde housed only a minuscule 2117 inhabitants.

The rapid population growth that Clyde is experiencing is reflected in the demographics of its population.

Over 55.3 per cent of Clyde’s adult population is married - up from the Victorian average of 46 per cent.

The bulk of these married couples are relatively young, family oriented professionals - with nearly 40 per cent of the population aged between 25-39.

Young children from ages 0-4 also make up a significant portion of the area’s population - over 12.8 per cent, which is significantly higher than the Victorian average of 5.8 per cent, and there are more children attending preschool or primary school as well.

Of the 476 houses sold in Clyde in the period between 2024 and 2025, 460 were three, four or five bedroom homes, highlighting the fact that people are coming to Clyde to raise families.

52.8 per cent of Clyde’s population was born in Australia, of whom 60.9 per cent had parents who were born overseas - making the area a home for second-generation Australians.

15.8 per cent of people in Clyde were born in India, with smaller groups being born in Sri Lanka, The Philippines, New Zealand and the United Kingdom.

Clyde is a highly productive area, with over 77 per cent of the over-15 population being engaged in full time work.

Of those that aren’t, many are currently obtaining qualifications, with enrolment in Certificate III, Certificate IV and Advanced Diploma courses being higher than the Victorian average.

The biggest employers in Clyde are hospitals and the aged care industry, which employ 5.4 and 4.8 per cent of over-15s respectively.

ENVIRONMENT AND OUTDOOR ENTERTAINMENT Clyde offers residents a host of opportunities to get outside and out in the fresh air.

Hill Farm Park and Creekside Park offer well maintained, picturesque walking trails.

For children young and old, the Elliston Park Playground, Maple Park Playground, Pump House Crescent Reserve Playground and the Pasadena Boulevard Playground offer spaces where kids can play.

Dog lovers are well served in Clyde - the Ashtead Street Dog Park offers a sizable fenced off space where dogs can be let off the leash to run and play. A similar off-leash area exists at Maple Park, next to the playground.

SPORT AND RECREATION: Clyde is home to a number of different sporting clubs, including the Clyde Netball Club, the Clyde Cricket Club and the Clyde Tennis Club.

The Casey Crusaders Rugby Union Club also trains on the grounds of the Lineham Oval.

The Clyde Recreation Reserve, initially hosting quite a small facility, was significantly expanded in 2024 to account for Clyde’s vastly increasing population.

It now hosts a number of sporting and athletic resources, including three AFL/cricket ovals with relocatable rugby union goal posts, two netball courts, eight tennis courts, four cricket practice nets, a car park with approximately 300 sealed car spaces, spectator viewing, a shared recreational walking/cycling path network, a new pavilion

Weeds lose ground The Casey Peri-urban Weed Partnership Project is helping local reserves bounce back from invasive plant threats.

Backed by $144,000, the program brings together the City of Casey, Parks Victoria, and community volunteers to manage weeds like Sallow Wattle and Bluebell Creeper while controlling pests such as foxes and cats.

Through careful monitoring, hands-on management, and community engagement, the project restores biodiversity and strengthens ecosystems across multiple reserves.

Event postponed

By Ethan Benedicto A Casey youth community group has postponed its Cranbourne North event due to safety fears, as anti-immigration rallies under the “March for Australia” banner gear up nationwide.

The gathering, originally planned for Sunday, 31 August, to focus on alcohol and drug awareness, was called off.

The closest planned rally is set to take place in Melbourne’s CBD. Organisers cited concern for vulnerable young people, with local author and public speaker Danyal Diallo stressing that safety came first.

Diallo, who has built his work around cultural awareness and breaking stereotypes, warned that while some concerns about immigration may be genuine, they are being amplified by misinforma-

He argued that immigration has long enriched Australia’s economy and identity, and called instead for constructive, respectful dialogue.

The planned rallies have raised alarm after extremist groups attempted to align themselves with the movement, even as organisers distanced themselves from neo-Nazi figures.

For Diallo, the challenge lies in creating spaces where communities can address real issues, from housing affordability to job security, without resorting to divisive rhetoric.

He urged residents to choose conversation over confrontation, saying community organisations play a vital role in fostering belonging and understanding.

Crime in the spotlight

By Ethan Benedicto A neighbourhood crime forum was held in Bunjil Place on Thursday, 21 August, as residents expressed their concern about different levels of crime.

Likewise, it was an opportunity for Victoria Police to provide a comprehensive overview of key topics, such as family violence, youth crime, road safety, and key statistics in the City of Casey.

Stuart Richards, Casey’s local area commander inspector, said that holding these forums, where open conversations are encouraged and where local residents become part of the solution, “is absolutely important”.

“We see ourselves as servants of the community, and the issue we have is that a lot of the time, when people are involved with the police, they are actually victims of crime and are impacted on a personal level.

“So it’s helpful to have the people here when they could have been a victim in the past, but also to just bring things up that might have occurred then.”

Richards further emphasised the fact that open forums provide key information for residents who may not be entirely aware of what crime in their area looks like.

At the same time, officers encouraged residents throughout the night that, either during intermissions or in the final hour of the forum, to mingle, “grab a blue shirt” and have a chat.

“We know we’re not perfect, we get that, and I think the community to a certain extent accepts that as well,” Richards said.

“But we also rely on the community to make us better.”

There were just over 100 people in the gallery, consisting of residents and community organisation representatives, all eager for their voices to be heard and their questions answered.

Casey’s councillors were also in attendance, hearing questions from Cr Kim Ross on youth crime and statistics, and questions from Cr Scott Dowling on property damage, as well as burglaries and break-ins.

By Ethan Benedicto A new threshold for disclosable gifts for councillors has been set at $50, aligning it with the overall staff gift policy, following a swift unanimous agreement from the council during the Tuesday meeting.

This new amount is up from the previous $20 limit, with the revised Councillor Gift Policy aimed at improving clarity, transparency, and consistency in how gifts, benefits and hospitality are managed for elected representatives.

Chloe Casey, the manager of communications and corporate governance, first spoke on the report, adding that the policy was initially reviewed before the return of an elected council.

Cr Gary Rowe moved the motion and was seconded by Cr Kim Ross; the vote was passed unanimously, and it was the only officer report that passed without debate during the meeting.

“To talk about community, because we know it’s one of the top priorities for our local residents,” Koomen said.

Ambros added that being present, and “showing that we’re all working together is key when individual guest stakeholders come together, from the residents, to the police, to the council and members of parliament, having that sense of awareness”.

“Even some of the groups that have those connections in local communities have that chance to hear what’s going on, to get the right advice, and to know how best we can support one another,” she said.

Reflecting on the topics covered and the conversations that were had, Koomen said that working together remains a priority, and is how the “best results” can be achieved in terms of safety, cohesiveness, awareness and more.

“We have to put our resident issues forward, and that’s what we’re here to do; we also want to work with the police to see if there are opportunities for the council to be involved,” he said.

Accused car thief faces 32 charges A man has been accused of a 32-offence, three-week crime spree across the South East.

The 28-year-old from Carrum Downs was allegedly in a stolen vehicle driven dangerously to evade pursuing police in Pakenham on 12 August and Skye on 18 August. He was also allegedly part of a spate of burglaries and thefts between 3-23 August.

Police say the offences occurred in Dandenong South, Cranbourne, Noble Park, Narre Warren, Pakenham, Clyde, Skye, Officer and other suburbs.

The man was arrested with the assistance of the Dog Squad, Air Wing and Southern Metro Region Crime Squad in Frankston on Saturday 23 August.

Moorabbin and Frankston CIU detectives charged him with 32 offences including burglaries, car thefts, conduct endangering serious injury and driving dangerously whilst pursued by police.

He was allegedly wanted on a warrant for failing to appear at court for similar offending. The man was remanded to appear at Dandenong Magistrates’ Court on 27 August.

Three teens arrested after cars damaged Three teenagers have been arrested after they were caught damaging cars in Hampton Park in the early morning of Tuesday 26 August.

Police were called to reports of teens smashing the front window of a business on Commerce Drive just after 12am.

It is alleged that they then damaged around 15 vehicles parked on the street.

No one was inside the business or any of the cars at the time.

Officers attended and arrested the trio at the scene.

The 14-year-old boy and two 13-yearold boys, all from the Dandenong area, were taken into custody, where they will be interviewed.

Toddler critically injured Police are investigating a collision in Chelsea Heights on the night of Monday 25 August, where a child sustained critical injuries, and a Clyde man was interviewed.

It is understood a white van was travelling west on Thames Promenade, near the intersection of Mulkarra Drive, when it struck a toddler about 9.10pm.

The child was on a small balance bike using the pedestrian crossing with a man who was walking.

An off-duty police officer stopped to assist the child, who was then worked on by emergency services at the scene.

The child was transported to the hospital with serious injuries and remains in a critical condition. The man who was walking across the road was not injured.

The male driver of the van stopped at the scene and was arrested. The 29-yearold Clyde man was interviewed and released pending further enquiries.

Major Collision Investigation Unit detectives are working to establish the exact circumstances of the collision.

Cr Rowe spoke on the new policy, saying that “it’s a worthy project for maintaining the upright and visible temptations”.

“I’m thinking of this in relation to getting us as new councillors, on the basis on which to judge what we’re doing and how we’re doing it with a degree of assurance for the community, knowing that things will be done the right way,” he said.

Other changes to the policy, in addition to the gift amount increase, include example gift scenarios and future plans to manage the gift register.

Council will also be strengthening the advice for when and how to disclose gifts, with further clarification around gifts and hospitality associated with partnership agreements.

Definitions were also enhanced for certain terms, such as token gift, non-token gift, official role, sponsored travel, and corporate hospitality.

Concerns over Casey RACE

By Violet Li Visitors to the Casey Recreation and Aquatic Centre (RACE) have raised concerns about the facility’s cleanliness and safety standards.

A Facebook post by Casey Cr Michelle Crowther on improving the facility drew more than 20 comments on issues of cleanliness and safety.

A primary concern among patrons is the cleanliness of the facility. Multiple reports have highlighted areas such as change rooms, toilets, and poolside spaces being inadequately cleaned.

Star News has talked to several patrons, and they all preferred to be anonymous for privacy reasons.

One patron, who visits the pool two to three times a week, said every time he goes to Casey RACE, the cleaning issue is just what everyone talks about.

“It’s just the showers are disgusting. There’s even vandalism. Someone’s written on the tiles and the toilets,” he said.

“These cleaners aren’t up to it.”

Another regular patron described ongoing cleanliness issues at the hydro pool.

Despite management promising to remove debris, items like bath aids, hair ties, and floating bits remained.

“I think there are a lot of oh, we’ll pass it on to the relevant person. It’s not actually dealt with,” she said.

“I’ve had another friend who has to use the disabled toilet. She says she’s regularly going up and complaining because there’s no toilet paper in there. And instead of someone getting a roll of toilet paper and taking it in, they just say, we’ll pass that on.

“Virtually, when you bring up an issue, obviously, everyone’s got their designated role, and it’s not their role to do this, so they’re just going to pass it on to the next person.

“You don’t know if the issue is that it’s not getting passed on or if the issue is they’re passing it on to people not doing it. You just don’t really know.”

In addition to cleanliness issues, safety has become a significant concern.

Earlier this year, a brawl involving multiple teenagers occurred at Casey RACE, leading to a facility-wide evacuation and police involvement.

Although no injuries were reported, at the time, the incident raised questions about security measures and crowd control within the facility.

A patron said the security guards are useless when teens tend to cause havoc in the summer months.

“The intention was for the guards to bag check, as there were instances of teens bringing in glass bottles of alcohol and knives,” she said.

“Also, just a general lack of security to make us feel safe leaving at night. There is very bad lighting in the carpark…”

Cr Crowther said she had been contacted by a number of community members who had shared their feedback and concerns about their experiences at Casey RACE. “In response, Cr Gary Rowe and I organised a walk-through of the facility with Council officers to better understand the issues raised and

explore how they can be addressed,” she said.

“This visit provided valuable insights into the community’s concerns and gave us an opportunity to discuss practical solutions to improve the experience for all users of the facility.

“Council has several upgrades planned for Casey RACE over the coming financial year, including new flooring in the family and accessible changerooms and cafe, installation of new entry turnstiles, a refurbishment of the steam room, and major works in the pool plant rooms to help reduce future shutdowns and disruptions.”

A spokesperson of Casey RACE’s operator Aligned Leisure said they appreciate the feedback passed on by Cr Michelle Crowther from the community, and recently hosted Cr Crowther for a walk-through of Casey RACE to discuss issues and opportunities to improve the facility.

“In partnership with the City of Casey, we are committed to providing an excellent experience for all visitors and look forward to working with Council on a number of future planned improvement works at Casey RACE,” they said.

Sandon ex-mayors call for an end to public IBAC hearings

By Cam Lucadou-Wells Former Casey mayors grilled in the Operation Sandon investigation have called for IBAC to cease holding examinations in public “under any circumstances”.

A joint submission from former Casey mayors Sam Aziz, Lorraine Wreford and Janet Halsall as well as Bob Halsall and Bernard Lee to a State Parliament inquiry states public examinations – and media access to transcripts - make it “impossible for IBAC to avoid inflicting reputational damage” on witnesses.

However, a former IBAC commissioner who oversaw the Operation Sandon inquiry has submitted to the Parliament inquiry for wider powers for public examinations.

Robert Redlich argued to remove the “exceptional circumstances” requirement for public examinations.

“Public hearings serve the public good.”

Some of the benefits listed by Redlich include transparency, deterring corruption, increasing the public’s faith in IBAC and increasing IBAC’s accountability to fairly treat witnesses.

“One need look no further than the secrecy surrounding IBAC’s large number of private examinations over the last decade to see how it has provoked continuous public criticism and distrust over its hidden processes.”

Redlich argued it was “highly unlikely” that an IBAC witness’s reputation would be “unreasonably damaged” in public inquiries.

This was because IBAC had to be satisfied that the evidence likely established the witness’s alleged misconduct.

Aziz and Wreford were among several councillors, MPs and developers publicly interrogated during Sandon’s examination of serious corruption allegations involving planning and development decisions in Casey.

Adverse findings were made against some witnesses. As yet, none of them have been charged.

Meanwhile Janet Halsall resigned from her staffer role in Federal MP Jason Wood’s office after being named in evidence heard during Sandon.

“Each time IBAC holds a public hearing they are contravening their own Act which states that they must not hold public examinations if this will result in reputational damage for witnesses,” the submission stated to the Adequacy of the Legislative Framework for the Independent Broad-based Anti-corruption Commission (IBAC) inquiry.

Former mayor Amanda Stapledon took her own life while believing she was headed for jail over corruption allegations raised at Operation Sandon, a State Coroner found.

IBAC subsequently confirmed it was not contemplating charges against Stapledon nor referring her for prosecution.

During Sandon, then-Local Government Minister Adem Somyurek sacked Casey’s councillors and installed a panel of administrators to oversee the council in 2020.

According to Aziz and Wreford’s submission, witnesses suffered “catastrophic outcomes” such as severe mental health issues due to not being told when “stringent confidentiality requirements” were lifted.

Resulting media coverage had caused “innocent bystanders” - not under investigation, but referred to in the investigation - losing jobs, livelihoods, health and relationships, the submission stated.

IBAC had presented a report to Parliament after the examination of “innocent witnesses” but hadn’t provided updates on the witnesses’ “fate for literally years”, the ex-mayors claimed.

“This has had huge impacts on the welfare of witnesses, as they cannot move on and rebuild their shattered lives until they have final confirmation from IBAC that no further action is to be taken.”

Public examinations also “(render) it impossible to find an unbiased jury” if there’s a formal prosecution, the ex-mayors argue.

Redlich, in his submission, also called for broader investigation powers to explore ‘grey’ or

“soft” corruption.

He submitted that IBAC was limited to examining misconduct that could be deemed as criminal, such as for financial gain.

But many forms of misconduct were not for financial gain but for political party interest or political power or favour which “serves an interest at the expense of the public interest”, he argued.

It leaves an increasing band of “grey” misconduct due to the changing nature of executive government – in which ministers were surrounded by “political” advisers.

The ALP-branch stacking inquiry Operation Watts – which had a strong focus on the South East - didn’t uncover any crime but instead “serious misconduct designed to favour political interests which corroded decision making in the public interest”, Redlich argued in his submission.

“The public response from the primary person of interest was that there were no findings of corruption.

“As the Ombudsman and I stated, this grey corruption has precisely the same deleterious effects on the public good as a crime, but it is far more prevalent.”

Local government opposition spokesperson Beverley McArthur recently called for answers as to why there has not been a single charge against Sandon witnesses given the scale and severity of the allegations.

Currently, the Operation Sandon report and documents are not available on IBAC’s website.

“Sandon sullied the reputations of many individuals – who deserve to know whether they will be charged or not.”

The State Government was contacted for comment.

Weed work revives bush

By Violet Li In one section of Warneet Natural Features Reserve, the bush is beginning to breathe again.

Just a few years ago, Sallow Wattle strangled the understorey, blocking out the sunlight and leaving little room for native plants to grow. After three years of weed management, that corner now tells a different story: orchids, acacia, and native grass plants are pushing through the soil, a glimpse of what restoration can achieve.

Showing the Star News the efforts of weed management, City of Casey senior Natural Resource Management officer Stuart Boardman explained that weeds like Sallow Wattle can take over the mid-story and start to really dominate areas.

“It actually grows up so thickly that it will shade out and compete with the native plants and indigenous plants on the ground,” he said.

“It can change the structure of the ecosystem.

It can make it easier for things like foxes to prey on small marsupials.

“It just really changes the whole dynamic.”

Stuart went on to say that they had had funding for this site for the last three years.

“There’s been a lot of work in this reserve.

We’ll keep working for the next two years as well with the new ones.”

Casey Peri-urban Weed Partnership Project now hopes to replicate on a larger scale.

With $144,000 in funding over two years from the State’s Peri-urban Weed Management Partnership Program, the City of Casey, Parks Victoria, and local community groups are working together to restore biodiversity.

Council and Parks Victoria are contributing staff hours and pest control programs, ensuring the project tackles not only invasive weeds but also the broader threats posed by foxes and cats.

The work stretches across four connected reserves.

At Warneet, follow-up efforts will continue against Boneseed, Bridal Creeper and Cape Broom, while cat trapping helps protect wildlife.

Blind Bight Bushland Reserve is seeing infestations of Sallow Wattle and Bluebell Creeper tackled, supported by fox control.

Offshore, Quail Island faces one of the most ambitious tasks: 200 hectares of invasive growth to be cleared, protecting critical habitat for the Southern Brown Bandicoot. Chinaman Island will also see 16 hectares of weed control in its northern section, with more in year two.

During another site visit, Stuart took Star News to walk through a section of Blind Bight Bushland Reserve. All around, young Sallow Wat-

While attractive at first glance, the plants were spreading thickly, competing with native groundcover and altering the structure of the bush.

“You can imagine in five to ten years, they’ll get up to four or five metres high, so they’ll just start taking over,” Stuart said.

On the ground, the work is slow and methodical, ringbarking, cutting and carefully removing plants without stripping the bush bare.

Measuring success goes beyond what’s seen

on the ground. According to Stuart, contractors provide detailed reports, and before-and-after photographs are taken to document changes.

Aerial imagery is also used, with programs like Nearmap making it possible to track the spread, or retreat, of weeds across entire reserves.

“For example, in Warneet Natural Features Reserve, you can really see that last year and the year before, you had a lot of yellow flowers. And then with the new aerials, it’s kind of all gone,” Stuart said.

Stuart said a big part of the weed management

project is community engagement.

“We’ve got a really active friends’ group in Warneet who help with our Warneet site, which is great,” he said.

“We’ll be trying to get as much interest as possible in getting new volunteers into our group.

“We’re also going to do some work with some other local agencies and organisations.

“Casey is going to try and organise some workshops to get people interested in weed management and pest animal control. That’s going to be part of the projects.”

Junction Village residents battle rabbit plague in front yards

By Violet Li Junction Village residents are waging a battle against a furry foe, as rabbits wreak havoc on their front-yard gardens.

Rabbit plague is nothing new for the greenfield in Casey South, with Star News reporting the area’s ongoing struggles with garden-destroying colonies last year.

A Botanic Ridge local told Star News last year that with all the development and subdivision in the area, rabbits were being forced out of their natural habitat.

“All that area that the rabbits were quite happy in is not available to them. They just go roaming around everywhere,” he said.

Marc Noyce, a Junction Village resident, said he had spent thousands of dollars replacing plants in his front yard.

Walking towards Marc’s garden, the little fences surrounding it could show his determined efforts to keep the rabbits from devouring his plants. On closer look, many sections of the fences were tilted, as said by Marc, evidence of the rabbits’ persistent attempts to push their way through to the plants. Many times, the fences just snapped, and Marc had to fork out some sum to replace them.

“It’s amazing what they can do and how high they can reach. It’s quite incredible. They’re up on their high legs there,” he said.

“I even did trials at the front of foul-smelling onion-type plants. They ate those two. They are native strappy plants that rabbits are not meant to eat. They just eat them down until they’re not there.

“The thing with rabbits is they’re very habitual. So once one finds something that tastes good,

Before last week, Octave, the estate where Marc’s house is located, had a policy that front fencing was not allowed, which, according to Marc, made it impossible to have a front garden.

“Luckily, they’re actually starting to work with us,” Marc said.

Chris Ravat, Jinding National Development Director, Communities, said Jinding could con-

firm they had updated their design guidelines for their Octave community in direct response to resident feedback regarding rabbit activity in the area.

“When the original guidelines were developed, challenges with rabbits were not foreseen,” he said.

“However, we understand the impact they can have on gardens and landscaping and have listened closely to residents’ concerns about dam-

age to property.

“The revised guidelines will permit fencing that will help residents protect their gardens from the animals.”

Marc said the change of the policy is welcomed, but it still doesn’t get rid of the issue of these rabbits, who are just coming in hordes.

“They’re generally everywhere. There are hundreds and hundreds of them across there.

They live on the verge of the Botanic Garden.

They live in burrows just on the outside of that road (outside the Garden),” Marc said.

“Rabbit droppings everywhere.

“They are digging up the native plants and going for the roots. That’s what they’re after as well, displacing habitat for the bandicoots that are here. That’s a real issue.”

Marc said some relevant lands where rabbits were abundant in the estate hadn’t been handed over to the Casey Council yet, and he hoped that when the handover was completed, the council could start their rabbit control program there.

Levy is hitting residents

By Ethan Benedicto The hotly criticised emergency services and volunteers fund levy has taken effect for many residents throughout Victoria and Casey, with the Casey Residents’ and Ratepayers Association calling for more advocacy to be done.

Anthony Tassone, vice president of the CRRA, said that ratepayers are receiving a “nasty surprise” when it comes to their rate notices this year.

“Not only is there an increase in their rates to the three per cent cap for Casey residents, but there’s also this state-endorsed tax, and that’s how it’s being perceived.

“It’s not a levy, it’s a tax that local councils are expected to be tax collectors [of] on behalf of the state government,” he said.

The ESVF levy was met with harsh criticism and protests by the numbers in Spring Street earlier this year, with CFA volunteers, farmers and firefighters among the fray.

More recently, on 26 July, more than 30 councils from across Victoria gathered in Melbourne in a similar show of protest against the ESVF, one which the City of Casey was indirectly represented by Kowan Ward councillor Shane Taylor.

Casey’s Mayor, Stefan Koomen, told Star News in June 2025 that while he agreed the ESVF levy was unfair, the council remained tied to its legal obligations under the State Government.

At the same time, Koomen said then that the council is working with the state government, as well as other stakeholders and the Municipal Association of Victoria.

However, Tassone thinks that Casey as a whole “should and must join the advocacy of over 30 other councils to scrap the tax”.

“We question the value of the MAV and whether they’re really prepared to push hard against the

“We have neighbouring councils like Cardinia Shire who have been very vocal against the ESVF, and we’d like to see the City of Casey join those strong calls to oppose it, and do more than what they’re currently doing for the residents,” he said.

As reported by the Herald Sun, the ABC, and other independent outlets, those focusing on re-

gional news and farmers have reported residents facing up to a 200 per cent increase.

Likewise, a Mitchell Shire homeowner faced a 62 per cent jump in their bill, over $4200, bumping the total bill to nearly $11,700.

“Farmers are doing it tough already without the state government slapping them with extra taxes on the land that they hold,” Tassone said.

“And again, what choices are they left with to

try and recoup and offset the impact of these taxes?

“There are flow-on effects to the rest of the community through increased prices of produce, goods and services that businesses provide.”

Tassone also questioned the overall “motives” of the levy, saying that it is basically a “tax hit delivered through rate notices”, with local councils serving as their tax collectors.

When places of worship aren’t welcome in Green Wedge zones You hear it all the time: “We’re not racist, we just want to protect the environment.”

And yet, planning rejections for places of worship — temples, mosques, gurdwaras — across Melbourne’s Green Wedge zones are stacking up like dominoes.

First the mosque in Narre Warren North.

Then the Hindu temple in Pearcedale.

Next?

The stated reasons are always the same: biodiversity, noise, traffic, native flora.

But let’s be real — is this truly about trees and traffic?

Or something deeper?

Because if you listen closely to the voices behind the objections, you’ll often hear something else: fear.

Fear of change.

Fear of being outnumbered.

Fear of difference.

Australia is not short of land.

It is not short of engineering solutions for parking, traffic, or acoustic concerns.

What we’re short of is trust.

We live side by side, but not together.

We attend festivals but don’t talk to our neighbours.

We “tolerate” other cultures, but rarely celebrate or understand them.

And when a temple or mosque is proposed in a previously Anglo suburb, objections pile up.

But so does resentment from ethnic communities who feel vilified, rejected, and misunderstood — again.

Let’s be clear: bad behaviour exists on both sides.

As one Hallam resident shared with us: “They parked across my driveway, left rubbish, were yelling late at night after prayers.”

These experiences sour goodwill and confirm stereotypes.

But should the actions of a few ruin connection for all?

We have a right to protect the Green Wedge.

But we also have a duty to protect the soul of our suburbs.

This isn’t just about temples or trees.

It’s about who gets to belong.

If churches can be built quietly in green zones, why not gurdwaras?

If Italian clubs and footy ovals exist in semi-rural zones, why not community halls for Diwali or

Eid? We’re not asking for blind approval.

We’re asking for balanced, bias-free dialogue.

We’re not saying all opposition is racist — we’re saying some of it is, and we must be brave enough to name it.

Governments need to stop handing out cheques to tick diversity boxes. Instead: ■ Empower communities to raise their own funds, but provide land solutions that work — not just throw them into the middle of a protected wedge and let the fight begin.

■ Mandate cultural education (CQ) in councils, schools, and planning bodies so decisions reflect understanding, not fear.

■ Showcase ethnic economic impact — highlight the tax paid, jobs created, and service delivered

by Australia’s diverse communities.

■ Stop “Harmony Day” lip service — replace it with year-round, localised programs that create real contact between cultures.

One proposal is a “Know Your Neighbour” campaign.

A state or even nationwide campaign that rewards schools, workplaces, and streets for genuine community connection.

This could include: ■ Neighbour Challenges – How many neighbours can you name and connect with?

■ Local Meet-Ups – Councils run “Street Conversations” with tea, food, and story-sharing.

■ Corporate-Sponsored BBQs – Telcos, energy companies fund and host neighbourhood events.

■ Schools host “Family Fusion Fairs” – Where students showcase their parents’ culture and build bridges across generations.

Let’s turn diversity from a talking point into a living experience. Because the Green Wedge doesn’t just need protecting from development — it needs protecting from division.

Let’s fight for both.

Mayor vows continued advocacy as ESVF levy hits

By Ethan Benedicto Mayor Stefan Koomen has acknowledged the impact of the ESVF levy, vowing commitment for fairer outcomes and advocacy for Casey residents.

This comes as the CRRA’s vice-president, Anthony Tassone, highlighted the impact that the ESVF, which has recently hit local ratepayers’ bills, has had, labelling it as a “nasty surprise”.

Koomen said that residents have been in touch with him seeking “clarity and support”, and that the recent changes of the ESVF “have had a noticeable impact, especially on landowners with non-residential property”.

He emphasised that the ESVF is not a council-imposed charge, and none of the funds collected are retained by the council.

“Council acts solely as a collector of this levy, with all funds going directly to and managed by the State Government,” he said.

“This process has placed additional pressure on council resources, and we will continue to work with the state and stakeholders to ensure a smooth implementation within our community.”

The City of Casey has been in constant communication with the Municipal Association of Victoria (MAV), and according to Koomen, thanks to this advocacy, the state government has established a dedicated hotline to assist with ESVF-related enquiries.

While he has encouraged residents to contact the hotline for direct support and additional information, he also added that the levy has placed an unfair burden on Casey residents.

“We believe the increased levy places an unfair financial burden on our residents, many of whom are already facing significant cost-of-living challenges,” he said.

Koomen, speaking for the council and the city itself, said that he appreciates the critical role that emergency services play in keeping the community safe, but remains adamant that the levy’s burden cannot be ignored.

“Council remains committed to advocating for fairer outcomes and will continue to work closely with the state government and MAV to ensure the concerns of the Casey community are heard and addressed,” Koomen said.

Postponed amid concerns

The SBS article, published on 14 August, delved into the background of the marches, and while it remains unclear as to who exactly is behind the movement, extremists such as Thomas

Sewell, leader of the neo-Nazi Nationalist Socialist Network, had allegedly tried to claim the march as his group’s event.

The group, on their official Instagram page, had distanced themselves from such figures, with a spokesperson telling the SBS that the “attempts to hijack March for Australia for other issues, or to make it about any one group, are not in the spirit of the movement that we have taken custody of”.

A week prior to the article’s publish date, Sewell led a group of masked neo-Nazis through Melbourne’s CBD just after midnight; Sewell was also among the group of neo-Nazis during the lake gathering at Berwick Springs Lake / Guru Nanak Lake in November 2024.

However, instead of rash actions, Diallo emphasised the importance of constructive conversations, saying that he loves “the idea of the community getting together and workshopping issues”.

“I think that’s such a wholesome view on how we can sit together and actually talk through the issues that are of concern to us, rather than going on the street with limited or misinformation,” he said.

When asked if he thought the protests were a loud minority, he said that there is a high chance they are, but nevertheless remained steadfast that their concerns are valid and must be addressed in a balanced manner.

Diallo further said that the works of community organisations, such as the one he is a part of, play an important role in “informing others within the community”.

“They educate and ensure that newly arrived immigrants are well, because as an immigrant escaping or coming from a country where there was war, then coming to Australia, which is more peaceful, could take some adjustment.

“So getting into a community organisation that focuses on education and running workshops throughout the year provides a good sense of belonging and community to newly arrived individuals. And for those who have been fuelled by misinformation, I highly and strongly encourage a constructive conversation and even encourage them to come visit and sit down with a community organisation, I think that’s where it starts,” he said.

Fears of safety have prompted the organisers of a youth community outreach group to postpone their event on Sunday, 31 August, as swathes of anti-immigration rallies ramp up across Australia.

The closest planned rally is in the Melbourne CBD. Danyal Diallo, a Casey author and public speaker associated with the community organisation, said that while he understood the frustrations about the impact of immigration, he is deeply concerned about the approach that is being taken.

“I believe it’s essential to approach these discussions with empathy and a nuance of understanding of the complexity involved,” he said.

He added that immigration continues to be a strong driving force for Australia, one that is ingrained in the country’s history, identity, and one that “continues to enrich our culture, economy and communities”.

“While I acknowledge that some people may have legitimate concerns about the pace of change or the changes that come with integration, I worry that these protests might be fueled by misinformation and stereotypes,” he said.

The rallies Diallo is referring to revolve around the ‘March for Australia’ protests, which the SBS described, quoting the marches’ organisers, as an end to “mass migration” and a reclamation of Australian identity.

With requests to remain anonymous, Diallo said that the group and its organisers had planned an alcohol and drug awareness event to be held in Cranbourne North, with goals to raise awareness, especially for vulnerable youths.

Diallo himself centres his conversations around five key aspects, those being: cultural awareness, breaking stereotypes, mental health and self-care, fulfilling a social purpose, and finding where to begin.

“At the end of the day, safety is our priority; when we see things like this happening in the community, we reassess and reconvene at a later date,” Diallo said.

On the rallies’ organiser website, their ‘About’ page runs the slogan ‘Our Future, Our Fight’, adding that Australian streets have seen “growing displays of anti-Australian hatred, foreign conflicts, and disintegrating trust, whilst mass migration has torn at the bonds that held our communities together”.

Key rallies have been planned throughout the country, from Flinders Street Station in Melbourne, Belmore Park in Sydney, Roma Street Parklands in Brisbane, Anzac Memorial Park in Townsville, Salamanca Lawns in Hobart, and the Civic Centre in Darwin.

Diallo, who in 2019 held a TEDx presentation on breaking down stereotypes, said that “a lot” of the concerns start with misinformation, something he feels is bolstering the planned rallies.

“It’s crucial to recognise the contributions that immigrants make to our society, from creating businesses and jobs to enriching our culture and diversity,” he said.

“I’d like to see more constructive conversations about how we can work together to address the real challenges facing our communities, such as housing affordability, job security, and access to health care.

Firing up incinerator debate

By Cam Lucadou-Wells A South East MP is seeking to reignite debate on the growing role of waste-to-energy incinerators in Victoria, including in Dandenong South.

Legalise Cannabis MP Rachel Payne was set to move on 27 August for a State Parliament inquiry, questioning why there’s a move to burning waste instead of recycling and the ‘circular economy’.

“We all know that our recycling situation in Victoria is a complete shambles.

“Even at the most basic level, people don’t know what to put in which bin and where it’s going.

“Let’s fix this before we throw our hands in the air and burn rubbish.”

The proposed inquiry would examine the proximity of waste-to-energy to residents and roads, as well as its environmental, social and

economic impacts.

It would also examine alternative waste management technologies.

Payne questioned why Climate Action Minister Lily D’Ambrosio championed waste-to-energy but opposed an incinerator in her electorate in Mill Park.

“They are clearly not confident that these incinerators are safe or welcome where they live and work,” Payne said.

“If it’s OK to truck in rubbish from all over Melbourne to Dandenong and burn it, it’s OK to do so in more affluent areas.”

The inquiry would be scheduled to report back in August 2026 – shortly before the next state election.

“The Government would hate to talk about this during an election year, but it’s important to give the community and experts an opportunity to talk about it.”

Payne noted that NSW had banned such

plants in residential areas, and Public Health Association of Australia called for a “precautionary approach”.

She says this is in contrast to Victoria’s proposed “ring of fire” – with six waste-to-energy plants proposed in response to diminishing landfill space.

One of the facilities is slated for Ordish Road, Dandenong South, burning 100,000 tonnes of commercial and domestic waste a year.

The approved plant was touted to generate about 11 megawatts of “baseload, renewable electricity” from combusting the waste.

It was enough to “power 8000 homes and businesses in the area”, according to proponent Great Southern Waste Technologies.

“But just as importantly, it will also stop an enormous amount of waste taking up valuable space at landfills and in the process stop the production of 120,000 tonnes of harmful greenhouse gas emissions per annum,” chief execu-

tive Craig Gilbert said in 2023.

The GSWT plant, approved by VCAT and Environment Protection Authority Victoria, was said to be fully sealed, ensuring no odours.

However it was opposed by Greater Dandenong councillors as well as residents and schools in neighbouring suburbs on human health and environment grounds.

The incinerator was expected to be built by late 2025.

Meanwhile, Greater Dandenong, Casey and Cardinia Shire councils have signed up with six other councils to offload 95 per cent of household waste to a waste-to-energy facility in Maryvale for the next 25 years.

It is in response to Hampton Park landfill, currently used by many South East councils, nearing the end of life.

The nearest alternative tips are further away across Melbourne.

Young stars ignite West Side Story at Bunjil Place

By Violet Li St Peter’s College is bringing the iconic streets of New York to life with their production of West Side Story at City of Casey Schools on Stage 2025.

Over 100 students have engaged in the production of the musical, bringing their professionalism and passion that belie their age.

Talking to the students in the production of the show, the first thing you notice will be their unparalleled energy, dedication, and camaraderie.

“You spend a lot of time with each other. You become like a family,” James, who plays Riff, said, reflecting on what was most memorable out of the whole experience.

For the cast, the journey has been transformative.

From auditions to rehearsals spanning months, students say they have grown tremendously. The musical challenged students to explore complex characters, intense emotions, and intricate choreography like never before.

“This one really challenged our acting and made us not only grow as performers, but also able to experience that professionalism,” Vichit, who plays Chino, said.

His role reflects one of the show’s most striking themes: how love and hatred collide with devastating consequences.

“I basically found out that Maria has been cheating on me. So, she’s been brought to America to marry Chino. It is like a transformation from a shy, timid character to someone fuelled with anger and hatred now,” Vichit said.

“Hatred is a really key thing in the show, which just causes all of this (tragedy).”

For student Hanna, stepping into the role of Maria was both daunting and rewarding.

“I definitely found it a bit challenging, especially in the singing part. She sings very high and sings to people,” Hanna said.

“Last year, I played Danielle from Bring It On. But Maria is such a contrasting character because she’s naïve, she’s young, and she’s obviously going to make mistakes.

“But I absolutely enjoyed it, and I would play her again.”

Hanna tried hard to connect with Maria by finding common ground between herself and the character.

“Well, we’re actually both young. We both make mistakes,” she said.

Choosing West Side Story was a “leap of faith” for St Peter’s College, Nicole Lewis, the school’s performing arts coach, said.

Cast members of West Side Story: Schools Edition: Matthews (Action), James (Riff), Antonia (Anita), Vichit (Chino), and Hanna (Maria).

“Because there was a more recent film as well. Students were more familiar with it. I think if that film hadn’t come out, then I don’t know if we would have chosen it.”

Nicole was referring to Steven Spielberg’s 2021 film adaptation, starring Ansel Elgort as Tony and Rachel Zegler as Maria.

For readers who never watched the musical before, cast member Matthews explained that at the heart of the story are these two “starcrossed lovers”.

“They are burdened by their allegiances to their respective gangs,” he said.

“The Jets, who are like the stereotypical Americans — they call themselves that. The Sharks are Puerto Rican immigrants. It bases the whole story around this feud between the gangs, and how Tony from the Jets and Maria

from the Sharks end up falling in love despite this feud that goes on around them.”

“It’s depressing and it’s dramatic, but there is hope and there are important themes and messages in the show as well,” Nicole said.

This central conflict, love tested by prejudice, loyalty, and violence, is what makes West Side Story as relevant today as when it premiered in 1957.

Issues of cultural identity, immigration, and intolerance still echo strongly in contemporary society, giving the students’ performances a modern edge, James said.

For students, the rehearsal process leaves the strongest memories.

“All the memories come from rehearsal first, because that’s when we see each other the most,” Antonia, who plays Anita, said.

“When we go through a scene and just act it out on stage, most of the cast would be sitting down watching. So just having their raw reactions while we’re trying to practice is really motivating.

“It really captures the true emotion that’s happening in the scenes.

“I think the whole performance shows that we did was probably the most memorable stuff because when things were actually happening and the adrenaline just kept you going and going. You just do everything.”

MP backs Casey plan to scrap unregistered vehicle permits Libertarian State MP David Limbrick is urging residents of the City of Casey to get behind a recommendation to remove permits regulating motor vehicle repairs and unregistered vehicles on private land.

Mr Limbrick is urging residents to examine all of the proposed laws carefully and make submissions via the Council’s website if there are still issues that affect them.

a terrible precedent, not just for locals, but for people across Australia,” he said.

“Even if you’re not a car enthusiast, councils should not concern themselves with where you park your cars or what you choose to do on your own property, so long as you’re not harming others.

“A permit system probably would have eventually led to restrictions on all kinds of activities.

“The proposed change is a sensible return towards respecting property rights and hobbies people have been pursuing for decades.”

He said that many people choose to live in the south east so they can have a big backyard, and some love tinkering with machines.

“It is insulting to suggest this activity detracts from the community they live in,” he said.

“In fact, I would argue motor enthusiasts are an integral part of our community. Rather

than treating them as a problem, government bodies should be looking at ways to work with them.”

Mr Limbrick commended the Council for listening to community feedback.

“Casey Council has a rocky history, but I think if councillors support this change, it will help restore confidence in them as a democratically elected body that is responsive to residents,” he said.

Banksia Festival in bloom The Banksia Festival at Royal Botanic Gardens Cranbourne, held from 16 to 24 August 2025, celebrated Australian culture through the iconic Banksia genus.

Presented by the Cranbourne Friends of the Royal Botanic Gardens Victoria in collaboration with the Royal Botanic Gardens Victoria, the week-long event featured presentations, walking tours, and workshops focusing on botany and botanical art.

An exhibition showcased cultural interpretations of Banksias in various art forms, including paintings, literature, glasswork, and floral art.

The festival also offered a plant sale with over 600 Banksia plants and related artworks, along with exclusive tours of the Gardens’ Special Collections.

Event Convenor Mick Robertson from the Cranbourne Friends said the festival went really well.

He said it’s difficult to estimate the traffic, but they sold more than 300 tickets and raised “plenty of funds” for the gardens. ”The opening day was pretty good,” he said.

“We had three speakers and plenty of people in the room, and great discussions. It had a nice vibe.”

Mick said it had been a while since the last festival that was named after a plant.

“We chose Banksia because they’re a very dramatic plant species. And the Botanic Gardens Cranbourne has a number of people who have a lot of work history with Banksia,” he said.

“Carolyn Landon has written a book on the Banksia lady. Trevor Blake was the leader of the Banksia Study Group. And Celia Rossa is a local, and she’s done lots of fabulous paintings and botanical artwork.”

Stories come to life Characters leapt from the pages of favourite stories and into the classrooms at Casey Grammar School, as students from Foundation to Year 12 celebrated the joy of reading with the annual Book Week Dress-Up Day. The day was a colourful celebration of imagination, with students transforming into literary favourites including the Mario Brothers, Bad Guys, Paddington Bear and Manga heroes from Demon Slayer and Naruto.

Even staff got in on the fun, dressing up as Medusa, Alice in Wonderland, Cruella and more.

“The Junior School was buzzing with excitement as students arrived dressed as beloved book characters, with books in hand and stories to share,” acting head of Junior School, Sandra Torcasio said.

Every student from Foundation to Year 6 took to the stage in the Performing Arts Centre, announcing their characters during the Book Week parade.

Throughout Book Week, classes engaged in a range of activities from author visits and a themed scavenger hunt to classroom challenges and shared story sessions.

Author Adrian Beck joined students for a special incursion, and Junior classes explored the CBCA 2025 shortlisted picture books through creative learning tasks.

The Senior School also hosted competitions and activities that helped reignite a love of reading among older students.

“When students see their teachers and peers valuing books, it encourages even reluctant readers to give something new a try.”

Our members are proud of their efforts in producing wooden toys to donate to the Salvation Army Toy Fund. However, making wooden toys is not a requirement of membership, and you can make your own projects if you prefer.

Retired men are most welcome to visit the Shed and have a chat/cuppa to check out our fully equipped Shed (lots of “toys” to play with!) and see what we do for the community. They do not need any woodwork experience as Shed members are happy to pass on their experience in an enjoyable and friendly atmosphere.

Casey...VFL’s giant sleeper

By Jonty Ralphsmith Casey is ready to make a mark in the VFL finals - and looms as a danger side for the rest of the competition.

The Demons are set to go into their elimination final on Saturday with a five-game win streak, full complement of eligible AFL-listed talent at their disposal and unanimous self-belief.

The win streak, which has included victories over Brisbane in Brisbane and top-two side Box Hill, have put the VFL and wider footy community on notice.

It has taken Casey from a fringe top 10 side to one that has earned wildcard weekend off by finishing just a game outside the top four.

Regardless of the wins, there has existed an undercurrent of confidence all season.

The Demons’ round 15 loss to Coburg - a game they dominated - continued a frustrating trend of snatching defeat from the jaws of victory for unpredictable reasons, which briefly put the finals hopes in danger.

“I don’t think it’s a form spike,” coach Taylor Whitford said when asked about the win streak.

“I think it’s just been our ability to execute a little bit more.

“I showed the guys some stats after we played Coburg because it was a disappointing loss - we thought we had the game for large parts and we got beat and it was one that could go either way.

“I showed some stats about where we sat in our key measures and they were all positive, but our win-loss wasn’t.

“So it was around selling the story that we’re good enough, we just need to tidy up these key areas and we’ve been able to do that.”

It’s poetic that the win that set the platform for the season in round two over Gold Coast was built

Casey will have access to its eligible AFL-listed talent, including Ricky Mentha, during the finals.

There were 14 VFL-listed players in action

in that two-point win – usually it is a single digit number.

The confidence that performance provided in the brand of footy has permeated across the re-

mainder of the season, despite not finding consistent wins until the last third of the season.

Riley Baldi, after a year at local, and Paddy Cross, after injury-interruptions, were two in particular who fired early in 2025 and have formed part of a consistent nucleus of well performed VFL players.

“To have Mitch Hardie, Riley Baldi, Riley Bonner, Deakyn Smith play a full year together and (AFL-listed) Bailey Laurie, Jack Billings, Taj Woewodin, Jed Adams behind the ball, Luker (Kentfield) up forward, (has allowed us) to develop consistency,” Whitford explained.

“They’ve been great in taking reins and driving a lot of the on field and off field stuff so that’s probably helped, whereas last year we didn’t have that consistency.”

That stability and synergy within both AFL and VFL squads has been another factor behind the success.

Both Whitford and captain Deakyn Smith highlighted that both sets of players are representing Casey’s history and values and have aligned well towards a common goal in 2025.

“Our connection’s built slowly through the year, but I think it’s come to a point where it’s really positive and we want to keep on going so we don’t want to set a limitation on where we can go as a team, we just want to keep on getting better,” the skipper said.

The victory over Brisbane two weeks ago, albeit imperfect, was important to provide belief coming off the bye, having lost its three previous encounters after a week off.

Having bypassed wildcard round, Casey will enter its elimination final fresh off a bye.

Casey will face Williamstown at Casey Fields at 2.10pm on Saturday, the first time the two sides have faced off in 2025.

The four biggest ticks which propelled to finals footy

By Jonty Ralphsmith After winning just five games in a rare down year in 2024, Casey has rebounded spectacularly this season, finishing fifth on the VFL table.

Below are four of the key pillars which have driven the Demons back up the ladder SPREAD OF LEADERS Deakyn Smith was viewed externally as a surprise captaincy choice when appointed ahead of the 2025 season but has grown into the role excellently.

Positively, though, he’s had plenty of support to lean on, with former AFL pair Mitch Hardie and Riley Bonner bringing a wealth of experience, as well as Riley Baldi who has a teaching background and emerging leader Paddy Cross.

It’s a stark contrast from 2024, where there was a leadership void outside of captain Mitch White and now Collingwood AFL player Roan Steele, as a result of Campbell Hustwaite and Leo Connolly being heavily restricted for different reasons.

“There was ‘Whitey’ and ‘Steeley’ and then it was young kids last year,” Footy Operations Manager Gary O’Sullivan said.

“This year Deakyn’s been well supported by Mitch Hardie and Riley Bonner who has brought a huge amount of experience and energy.

“You need four or five really good VFL players to contend; we had that when we won the premiership and now we have it again.”

TRUSTWORTHY YOUTH The players rotated through the 23rd player slot for Casey have provided greater influence for the Dees than in previous years.

It follows tireless work in recruitment led by Todd Patterson, who has now departed the club, and coach Taylor Whitford, providing the club

Noah Yze, Olly Green, Tyson Sruk, Jesse Craven, Paddy Ireland and Mitch Kirkwood-Scott are among the players to have been utilised in the 23rd man position for Casey and all have shown promise.

“Any one of them, you could put in next week without fear of what you’ll get from them,” O’Sullivan said.

“You know you’ll get something reasonable whereas in the past it was more hit and miss, without disrespecting anyone.

“More emphasis and research has been put

into which young guys to bring in than previously.”

STABLE CORE The aforementioned leaders, alongside perennially VFL-selected AFL-listed players Jack Billings, Jai Culley, Jed Adams and Tom Fullarton has created a synergy rarely afforded in the transient environment of VFL footy.

“We’ve had a really solid group that has played for the majority of the year so that definitely helps,” captain Smith said.

“When the AFL boys come to play for us, they represent Casey and what the club is.

“We drive that and it’s similar for the AFL boys, so it makes it easier for them, but they’re willing to buy in which has built trust within the group.”

STRONG ALIGNMENT Casey having access to a full complement of eligible AFL players, as well as Charlie Spargo, for whom an appeal was successfully lodged to allow to play, highlights the buy-in from the AFL. In a year where St Kilda’s separation from long time alignment Sandringham has created much discourse about the positives of an AFLrun VFL program, Casey and Box Hill, the only two remaining aligned clubs, have proven the mutual benefit they provide by finishing in the top six.

Bayley Fritsch, Harvey Langford, Jake Lever and Tom McDonald have all had VFL cameos, been embraced, performed above the level and returned to the big league after providing Whitford’s troops with their best footy.

Luker Kentfield is an example of a player who has applied themselves diligently at VFL level all year, which has both helped the Dees on-field and earned him a contract extension.

And the VFL players gain plenty from rubbing shoulders with such quality.

“Our connection with the AFL program has been an important part of this year,” Whitford said.

“It’s a great balance and we preface to the young guys that you get the best of both worlds.

“You get the opportunity to be in an AFL environment - facilities, coaching, high performance, connection.

“Opportunities to play mightn’t be as high as a standalone (club) but I disagree with the fact it’s easier to get a game at a standalone because our list demographic is younger.”

and see what he could take from them and add to his own repertoire. It showed he could be a key defender but it was more about him learning the craft and what it takes, how different forwards play. All of those things have helped him develop and he’s been awesome since he’s been forward again.”

Midfielder - Mitch Hardie: I’ve been pleasantly surprised (by his scoreboard impact). He’s been unreal for us. He did most of his work as an inside mid at Geelong and even when he was an inside mid, it was his transition which was his real strength and we have him in a role at the moment which enables him to put that on show.”

Defender – Wardell Lual (Noble Park): “That Brisbane game was the best game I’ve seen him play. I love his contest, his ability to win one-onones and I love his erratic offence. His ability to take the game on and be bold is what I love and I never want to coach it out of him because he can explode on offence.”

Bulldogs’ blast sets scene

By David Nagel It took one quarter of power-laden football from Phillip Island to answer the only two questions that remained in the WGFNC home-and-away season on Saturday.

Phillip Island’s 8.3 to 0.3 first-quarter blitz against Inverloch-Kongwak caused enough damage to remove the Sea Eagles from finals calculations this year; while the Bulldogs would finish top-three and earn a path of least resistance in week one of finals.

From there it was an afternoon of little consequence, with Nar Nar Goon (1st), Tooradin-Dalmore (2nd), Phillip Island (3rd), Cora Lynn (4th), Warragul Industrials (5th) and Kilcunda-Bass (6th) all locked in and ready to go for this week’s first round of finals.

Phillip Island did such damage to InverlochKongwak in its 29.14(188) to 6.9(45) thrashing at Cowes, that it mattered little that Kilcunda-Bass had its hands full rolling over the top of a gallant Garfield.

Inverloch’s percentage dropped a whopping 8.42 percent, meaning the Panthers could lose to the Stars and leapfrog their way into the top six.

The Panthers responded to the challenge however, winning by 11 points against the Stars to finish a game and percentage inside the cut line.

Individual heroics were the order of the day in round 20, with Billy Taylor booting eight goals and Cam Pedersen six as the Doggies went to work at the Island.

Brendan Kimber, Nick Anderson and Yianni Caffieri were also on fire for the Bulldogs, who finished the season off in style with a 10.3 to 2.2 final-quarter blast.

Toby Mahoney booted two goals for the Sea Eagles, who succumbed badly in the second half of the season, winning just two of their last eight matches.

Pedersen was incredible for the Bulldogs, chalking up 256 ranking points after adding 33 disposals and 40 hitouts to his six goals for the afternoon.

Paul Pattison had a day out for the Eagles, racking up 36 touches for the day.

At Spencer Street, Dermott Yawney won the battle of the two best full-forwards in the competition; kicking eight goals in Nar Nar Goon’s ridiculously-easy 20.11(131) to 5.5(35) victory over Cora Lynn.

We won’t read too much into this one with both teams having very little to play for.

Tooradin-Dalmore’s two most powerful players, Shane Savage and Piva Wright, put on a clinic in a 15.21(111) to 8.5(53) victory over Dalyston.

Savage had a mammoth day out, collecting 39 touches, while Wright had 23 disposals and 22 hitouts on the day.

Class acts Lewis Hill and Jesse Craven were impressive for the Gulls, while Blake Carew rounded out a healthy 36-goal season with three goals for the Pies.

Kilcunda-Bass over Garfield, while Kooweerup sent outgoing coach Dale Alanis out on a high with an 8.7(55) to 6.11(47) success over Warragul Industrials at Western Park.

Veteran Tim Miller landed four telling blows for the demons, while Nathan Muratore and Nathan Voss were everywhere for the winners, having 32 touches apiece.

Dusties tall Wil McGillivray will take good form into this week’s elimination final against Cora Lynn, having a game-high 37 disposals.

Education the key piece as Hulme plots path to the top

By David Nagel There will be day in 2026 when new Kooweerup coach Darren Hulme addresses his players on the same day that the club celebrates the 45year reunion of its 1981 premiership.

The fact that it’s the most recent in Kooweerup’s history gives an indication of the size of the challenge that now confronts the man that his friends call ‘Pup’.

The 48-year-old, who played 110 AFL games and kicked 56 goals for Carlton, has signed on to lead the Demons for the next two years.

It follows a season working beside outgoing coach Dale Alanis, who planned on playing a full season in the seniors before a bicep injury cruelled his impact in round eight.

It saw Alanis become a more traditional coach from the sidelines; dampening the impact of Hulme, who was initially slated to be the eyes and ears of Alanis from the coach’s box.

With Kooweerup and Alanis deciding to part ways, Hulme decided the time was right to add to his previous coaching experience at senior and junior level.

“I had a good chat to Dale (Alanis), we’ve been really open, and he said if I wanted to coach Kooweerup that he would have no illfeeling towards it and it might be what the group needs…a different voice to take them forward with some fresh ideas,” Hulme said.

Hulme built his reputation on being tenacious and tough, uncompromising and honest, and squeezing every single ounce of his abilities.

It’s a trait he will bring to Kooweerup as he looks to replace John McKenzie as the club’s most recent senior premiership coach.

(497910) “To be honest I think the club is stuck in a cultural environment where it’s a country club, enjoyment is the focus, and players probably haven’t bought into the extra professionalism that’s required to generate success,” he said.

“They’re a great bunch of blokes, I love them, and that’s what’s drawn me to the footy club, but there’s definitely still an education piece there about what’s required to be a really good footy side.

“I was fortunate enough to work for Leading Teams, when I was playing AFL, so I’m right in that leadership and cultural space about how to improve and drive standards within a group.

“We probably didn’t do enough of that type of thing due to time constraints this year…but I’ll be big on that and they’ll be key focus areas in the build up to next year.

“What drives them to play footy; what drives

them to get better?”

Kooweerup has an emerging list of talented youngsters, and also a core group - led by brothers Matthew and Nathan Voss - that has the potential to drive the club to its next glorious success.

But it’s also a list that needs strengthening, with leg speed through the middle of the ground and a key target up forward key focus areas on the recruiting front.

The Demons showed promising signs this year, with forwards Josiah and Will Farrer adding plenty of excitement to the front half; with spectacular marks and clever goals a common occurrence.

Kooweerup is heading to the north of the continent once again to bolster its playing stocks.

“We’ve got some recruits already signed from the Northern Territory for next year, which will add to our midfield depth,” Hulme explained.

“We didn’t have the numbers to roll through there like the good teams have; ideally you want seven or eight guys, and adding speed is a key to that, and we’re pretty keen on a key forward that’s going to kick us 70 or 80 goals.

“We’re in talks with a couple at the moment, and if we manage to jag them it will catapult us as a footy team…if we get one in particular it will be a pretty big news story, that’s for sure.

“We’re certainly not going to die wondering and we’re having a crack in the market to try and jag a big powerhouse forward.”

While Hulme will drive high standards for the Demons in both their physical and mental preparation for next year; he’s also focussed on making sure a multiple set of game plans will stack up under pressure.

“In today’s footy you need to be able to adapt and play a number of different styles; depending on what the opposition is giving you, the conditions, so I’ll be educating the guys to play four different styles of footy,” he said.

“We won’t have a concrete rigid gameplan that we don’t shift from, the key is flexibility and the boys just need to go through the education process of understanding the different phases that we need.

“It might be game to game, it could be quarter to quarter, the aim is to be more difficult to play against on a consistent basis.

“I love the defensive side of the game, it’s something I hold close to my heart; you have to be able to defend, and defend well, and there will be some non-negotiables that I will expect from all of my players from a defensive aspect.

“I will never take away a player’s flair, but the defensive side of the game, and the effort that needs to be applied…is an expectation that needs to be there.”

There’s a fair chance that the next premiership coach of Kooweerup could have a bronze statue installed at the corner of the Kooweerup Pub, and Hulme is keen to be the man.

“I don’t think I’ve been as passionate or excited about footy as I am right now,” he said.

“There’s so much upside within this group and I’m pretty keen to hook in and start driving some high standards.

“I think we’ll start seeing results; the aim is to at least win a final next year and then progress even further from there.”

Hulmes brother-in-law Daniel Tannahill will be his assistant-coach next year while Kooweerup stalwart Ben Miller will also be part of the mentor group.

In his first year as a senior coach, the Redbacks have gone 14-4 and are firming as one of the hot flag favourites when they begin their Southern Division 2 finals campaign this weekend.

Bull brought along plenty of recruits and a sense of professionalism, making it clear from the beginning that the goal was to advance to Southern Division 1 – a goal that remains well and truly alive.

He was a legend at the Bulls, playing 230 games, winning two flags and serving as vicecaptain for six years – experiences which set him up for success.

“It has been really good, I have to give credit to my team who make coaching a lot easier,” Bull said.

“This was my first coaching role, so I went straight into it, I was thrown right in the deep end.”

Bull said one of the most important things this season has been building strong connections with the players.

“You can have as much knowledge about the game as you want, but being personable and having good relationships with your players helps more than anything,” he said.

“If you have their backs, it will go a long way to building camaraderie and that is probably my biggest learning out of it all.

“Especially being a playing coach, you have the opportunity to lead from the front and do what you are asking the players to do, that definitely helps.”

Despite it being his first senior coaching role, Bull quickly earned the respect of the players and everyone at the club and was grateful for the support behind him.

“My coaching mentor Brad Coller has been awesome and super helpful, he has 15 years of coaching experience, so I have learned a lot from him,” Bull said.

“I was also pretty lucky with my coaches at Noble Park, Mick Fogarty and Steve Hughes are great coaches and I listened to them very closely.”

The Redback rise has continued steadily for a number of years now and Bull was hoping he could continue that into 2026.

“Back in the day, 10 plus years ago, Hampton Park used to get smashed against those clubs (like Cranbourne) by more than 200 points,” Bull said.

“Hampton Park has slowly come back up and once the club won that Division 3 flag in 2019, it started bringing more players in.

“We are not necessarily a powerhouse club right now, but we are on the right track to becoming a really solid club with the netball and footy both thriving.”

When he signed on with the Hampton Park last year, Bull said “I’m not looking too far ahead, but I’ve got the aspiration of getting them to Division 1”.

He wanted to earn respect through “having a good club and winning” and he has completely stuck to his word thus far.

“Despite having the week off, we will have a hard week on the track and hopefully this week we can win and go straight through to the grand final,” Bull said.

The Redbacks get the chance to qualify for the grand final when they play Highett in the second semi-final on Saturday.

Stapleton signs and sees bright times ahead at Doveton

By Blair Burns At the end of the 2023 season, Matt Stapleton hung up the boots after an illustrious career with more than 200 games at Doveton.

He was a non-playing coach last season and expected much of the same again this year … but things changed quickly and he was forced out of retirement.

After a number of players departed the club late in the pre-season and others went down with early-season injuries, Stapleton was forced to lace up the boots and take the field, helping his side navigate a tough 2025 season.

It’s this dedication to the club and his selfless attitude that makes him the right man to help the Doves bounce back in 2026, after being reappointed to lead the side for a third consecutive season – hopefully from the sidelines as he attempts to retire once again.

“It certainly wasn’t the plan to play this season, it wasn’t on the horizon whatsoever,” he said.

(Gary Sissons: 489624) “It was a one-in-all-in type of mindset really; I wanted to be part of it and help the team in any way I could … and sometimes there are things you just can’t do from the boundary side.

“But that’s it for my footy; I have a pretty bad ankle that I have had four operations on to date,

so it’s time to step back into the pure coaching aspect of things.”

Doveton won just five games for the year, a disappointing result after coming into the season full of hope, falling short in a preliminary final last year against East Malvern.

“The year didn’t pan out how we would’ve liked, but the good thing about footy is you do get the opportunity to try and bounce back from it,” Stapleton said.

“In my two years as coach I have got to see both sides of it, from playing in a prelim final last season, to not winning as many games as we would’ve liked this year.”

Stapleton said the strong support from the club and bench coaches allowed him to take the field each week, with the 35-year-old performing well to be named in the best in half of the games.

“I’ve had tremendous support off the field and without that, it wouldn’t have been possible

for me to play,” he said.

“Once I sort of made the decision to come back and play, it wasn’t going to be a short-term decision, I was in it for the long haul.

“I wanted to make sure that I was preparing as well as possible to be out there with the guys.

“There is a lot that goes into coaching when you also have to prepare to play and have pride in performance.”

The club legend hoped the side could bounce back next season and said the focus was on retaining players and putting together more consistent performances.

“We certainly had opportunities in the middle parts of the season to get some more wins, but there were just small lapses which cost us,” he said.

“We will get the list as strong as possible in the off-season and give ourselves the best opportunity from there, it’s all been really positive so far.”

It’s go time as Hampton Park sets its sights on Bulldogs

By Blair Burns Hampton Park’s opponent for this weekend’s second semi-final in Southern Division 2 will be Highett after the Bulldogs triumphed over Chelsea Heights in a six-point thriller in the opening round of finals on the weekend.

The Redbacks finished on top of the ladder and led by coach Luke Bull, they will go into the clash against Highett with a 1-1 record as they look to book a spot in the grand final.

In Saturday’s qualifying final between the Bulldogs and Chelsea Heights, accurate kicking in front of goal was non-existent, with a combined 12.28 scored for the match as both teams struggled with the additional pressure in front of goal that finals games can bring.

Highett secured the double chance, but it wasn’t required as the Bulldogs won by six points against the Demons.

Will Straford was Highett’s best player in the win, while livewire Rhys Wilkinson kicked two goals - Chelsea Heights’ Erishmiilan Uthayakumar kicked three goals in the loss and was instrumental in his team’s best football.

DIVISION 2 REVIEW - ELIMINATION/QUALIFYING FINALS In the elimination final, East Malvern led Mordialloc by six points at the 20-minute mark of the fourth term, but the Bloods surged in the dying minutes of the contest to cause a big upset and win by four points.

The Panthers had some chances to win the game late, registering two behinds in the dying stages, but they fell narrowly short.

After missing the double chance by just 0.6 per cent, East Malvern’s strong 2025 season came to a premature ending.

Meanwhile, Mordialloc came into the clash with a 9-9 season record, sneaking into fifth spot, having lost to the Panthers by 30 and 37 points during the year.

The Bloods will advance to a semi-final with a big challenge ahead of them in Chelsea Heights, but they will dare to dream.
