Students at Nossal High School in Berwick have swapped their books to take control of a multimillion dollar fighter jet.

The Royal Australian Air Force brought its F/A-18F Super Hornet simulator for 33 students from four year levels to try out which aimed to develop interest amongst young people in aviation careers.

The experience included a flying lesson with an instructor, air traffic control games, and an aircrew life support gear demonstration.

Year 10 student Eunice said "It gave me insight as to what it means to be a pilot and opened up possible career paths."

Drug kingpin A Comanchero who led a large-scale drug trafficking operation in the South East and survived a targeted shooting at a Hampton Park tattoo parlour has been jailed.

Robert Ale, 37, of Lyndhurst, headed and controlled The Last Kings - a group tasked to do the work that the Comancheros couldn't be seen doing, Victorian County Court judge Paul Higham said on 8 March.

While Ale's enterprise built his standing in the criminal world, it was a "direct challenge to the fabric of the community".

Ale had used the force of his personality, fear, money and misguided loyalties to corrupt "impressionable" associates to carry out crimes such as the violent enforcement of a debt in Doreen in late 2016.

Before the attempted drive-by shooting, Ale had texted one of his minion enforcers to "enjoy the adrenaline rush".

As a result, he suffered health issues including a hernia that needed urgent invasive surgery, the court heard.

While working in events and marketing at Nitro Gym, Ale became attracted to the "brotherhood and belonging" offered by the Comanchero gang, Judge Higham noted.

At the same time, Ale's drug use accelerated.

While being jailed and released on strict bail in 2017, he'd enthusiastically taken part in alcohol and drug treatment. He'd shown genuine remorse and contrition, the court heard.

However as the "apex" of a drug operation, Ale needed to be sternly punished, the judge said.

Ale had pleaded guilty to an array of drug, weapons and proceeds of crime offences as well as conspiracy to commit arson and recklessly cause injury.

He was jailed for 18 years with a minimum non-parole period of 13 years, nine months.

However, police foiled the plan as well as an earlier proposed bashing at the unknown victim's home, the court heard.

Ale had also conspired to burn down a Kittens nightclub in Melbourne - a venue seemingly owned by a rival outlaw motorcycle gang.

He'd also instructed an associate to torch a stolen Mercedes Benz in Dandenong. Police in the area again foiled the plan and retrieved the vehicle.

Ale was charged with trafficking a large commercial quantity of nearly $1.25 million of ice over five months in 2016-17. He also trafficked cocaine, amphetamine, cannabis, ecstasy and 1-4 butanediol during the same period.

Cash, high-end watches and a gold ring seized from Ale's home showed the considerable profits of his enterprise, Judge Higham noted.

Ale had survived up to 10 rounds of bullets during a shooting at Nitro Ink tattoo parlour in Hampton Park in February 2018.

Tonnes of hay and feed donated

By Brendan Rees Truckloads of donated pet food and hay will make their way to aid victims of the Bunyip Fire devastation thanks to a charity drive held in Cranbourne on Saturday 9 March.

A convoy of trucks and high-performance sports cars made their way to PETStock Cranbourne to accept donations of feed from the the public to help fire-affected farmers.

The people at Eye Candy Motorsports and Flash Market also joined forces and raised funds to buy feed.

They delivered 72 tonnes of hay and 10 tonnes of stock feed as well as other donations to Warriors 4 Wildlife.

Nigel Williamson of Nigel's Animal Rescue who attended PETStock for the charity drive said he was overwhelmed by the public's response.

"It turned out to be a lot bigger than what we thought it was which was just amazing," Mr Williamson said.

"We've already donated out over a 140 tonnes of goods in the last eight days that have gone out to people already.

"The generosity of the public and businesses has been totally amazing.

"It's been an amazing incredible feat by volunteers who have jumped on board with us."

Mr Williamson said there were 20 depots across Melbourne where donations were being accepted which would assist with injured wildlife affected by the fires.

"We're going out delivering it farmers and people personally," he said. "We still need more donations and we'll need them for over the next six months because once the fires are out we've got to keep doing food drops out there."

Barrie Tapp of Animal Cruelty Hotline who has teamed up with Nigel's Animal Rescue and Warriors 4 Wildlife, said the flood of donations was impressive.

"It's unbelievable and that it's all being delivered by truck and trailers by the volunteers," he said.

"The public went into PETStock and purchased a lot of the feed and donated it straight back to the convoy.

"The volunteers have been absolutely amazing in how the community comes together."

Casey Mayor Amanda Stapledon said she was blown away by the generosity of people donating at PETStock and "shows the heart of the community."

"I think it's another example of great people doing great things," she said, She added Casey Council would also be donating $20,000 to the Casey Cardinia Foundation Relief Fund to aid victims of the Bunyip Fire.

"Thank you one and all. Thank you PETstock and thank you Casey!"

Police are appealing for public assistance following an aggravated burglary in Cranbourne North during which two vehicles were stolen on Thursday 7 March.

Casey Crime Investigation Unit detectives have been told two men gained entry to a Mountain View Boulevard home just before 6am.

The pair approached the three male occupants and demanded keys to vehicles parked on the property.

The victims handed over keys and the offenders went to the vehicles parked in the driveway and nature strip.

One of the victims then approached an offender who assaulted him with a hammer to the head.

The pair then fled in the victims' vehicles west along Mountain View Boulevard.

The stolen vehicles included a red Toyota Rav 4, registration 1MY 3QN; and a silver Toyota Camry sedan, registration WLW 083.

The victim, aged in his 30s, sustained a non-life threatening head injury and was taken to Casey hospital.

The two other victims, aged their 60s and 30s, were not injured.

Detectives are appealing for anyone with information about the aggravated burglary or anyone who sights the stolen vehicles to come forward.

Man charged with sex offences Dandenong Sexual Offence and Child Abuse Investigation Team detectives have charged a man following an investigation into alleged historical sex offences.

An investigation was conducted into a series of alleged sexual offending which occurred in homes in Berwick, Cranbourne North and Taylors Hill between 2003 and 2006.

A 48-year-old man has been charged on summons with sexual offences including indecent act with a child under 16 and five counts of sexual penetration of a child under 16.

The man is due to appear in the Melbourne Magistrates' Court on 21 March.

Police hope CCTV images will identify those responsible for a theft at a store in Narre Warren on 17 February.

Police allege about 10.40am a man and woman have entered the store, and the woman has purchased an item.

While she was being served the man has picked up both the item that was paid for along with another item valued at $191 which had not been paid for.

Police have released CCTV still images of a male and female who they believe can assist with their investigation.

Casey Crime Investigation Unit detectives are investigating a car fire in Cranbourne that was reported to police on Sunday 11 March.

Emergency Services extinguished the fire near the intersection of Pound Rd and McCormicks Road about 7.30am.

The fire has been deemed suspicious and an investigation is underway.

Shalaaka takes on politics

By Brendan Rees Shalaaka Brahmavar from Nossal High School in Berwick is off to Canberra to contribute to a political debate.

She will be among 120 Year 11 and 12 students from around Australia attending the 24 the National Schools Constitutional Convention being held at the Museum of Australian Democracy at Old Parliament House, Canberra from 19-21 March.

The topic for the Convention is, 'A new constitutional preamble for Australia?' This topic will provide students with the opportunity to explore the present Constitution and if a preamble is required.

A range of speakers will discuss the issues with students for them to debate with all delegates.

Shalaaka said she was looking forward to the opportunity to engage with other students "because ultimately, we are the ones who will be governing the nation tomorrow."

"It's not every day that I get the opportunity to go to the capital of the country and be involved in Parliament in such a close manner," she said.

"The experience will involve analysing both the Australian Constitution as well as Constitutions of other countries in order to understand how to improve our own."

Emeritus Professor John Warhurst AO from the Australian National University will facilitate the Convention "It is important our future leaders are given opportunities to explore constitutional issues to inspire an active young Australian voice in our democracy," he said.

"This Convention provides students with the unique opportunity to debate constitutional reform at the highest level."

Other elements of the program will include a meeting with the Speaker of the House of Representatives, The Hon Tony Smith MP at Parliament House, and a dinner at the High Court of Australia.

Tradie lends helping hand A Clyde North tradie has donated his time to building works for a charity home which will be auctioned for the Royal Children's Hospital Good Friday Appeal.

Kazir Oz, founder of his carpentry business, Calibre Co, was responsible for the internal lock up and fixing for the home.

According to Mr Oz, 34, it has been a humbling experience being part of such a worthwhile project.

"The Royal Children's Hospital Good Friday Appeal is such a great cause who help thousands of children in need," he said.

"As a child, I was a patient of the Royal Children's Hospital where I had multiple surgeries to straighten my feet.

"While my two children have not been patients of the hospital, I know first-hand the great care and support children get at the hospital. It was an honour to give back to the hospital in this capacity."

home, located at 16 Domingo Avenue, Clyde North, which is part of Villawood's boutique Delaray community.

The project initially started in 1993, when Henley committed to organise fundraising for The Appeal with the goal of raising $10,000.

The Henley Directors felt they could do something even bigger to help, and decided to build and donate a home instead, with every cent raised at auction being donated. The first home located in Timbarra Estate, Berwick went for $136,500, smashing the initial goal of a $10,000 contribution.

John Harvey, Henley managing director said, "In our 26th year of building and donating houses to the Good Friday Appeal, Henley is extremely proud in being associated with such an iconic Melbourne event, where 100 per cent of proceeds go directly to the Royal Children's Hospital."

Exhausted firefighters tackling the Bunyip State Park blaze last week received a welcome sight of icy-poles - but in a delivery van not quite what they expected.

Neither snags nor burgers were on the menu when the Brian's Gourmet Meats van rolled up to Bunyip fire brigade and the staging area at Nar Nar Goon Football Club on Sunday 3 March.

The Lyndhurst business decided to lend a hand to the hard-working firefighters by delivering icy-poles they had purchased at Cranbourne Park Shopping Centre.

Angela Rollason of Brian's Gourmet Meats said their employee employee Bernie Barrett came up with the idea.

"We just let Bernie use the business card, and we had a bit of a budget. She kind of went over it. Then two of the staff at Woolies actually pulled out their own purses and paid the rest," she said.

Bernie's daughter Tayani and and Angela's daughter Sarah went along for the ride who said "it was nice to be able to help."

"She basically described it was such an eye opener when they started handed out the icypoles. The firefighters were really grateful," Angela said.

"A lot them said to the girls they were so exhausted they couldn't even hold an icy-pole in their hand.

"Everything that everyone has done in the community it's really helped - it's not just our little one per cent," she added.

Reptile raids: smuggling in Narre Warren An illegal reptile smuggling ring has been busted by authorities during raids in Narre Warren, Oakleigh and Clayton on 7 March.

The syndicate had been attempting to send Australian lizards to China and Hong Kong, concealed in toys, chip containers, powered chocolate tins, deep fryers and rice cookers.

The raids were part of a lengthy investigation by Department of Environment, Land, Water and Planning, Australian Border Force and the federal Department of the Environment and Energy.

More than 150 lizards - with an estimated street value of more than $550,000 - have been seized during the joint operation since June 2018.

In the past month, three other search warrants were executed in Melbourne and Werribee, in which two people were arrested and charged with illegal possession and disposal of protected wildlife.

Most of the seized lizards will be homed at local sanctuaries, schools and zoos.

Some will be sent to the Australian Museum to develop tools to detect trafficked animals.

Twelve smuggled reptiles died from suffocation or trauma as a result of their ordeal.

Under the Wildlife Act 1975 there are various penalties associated with taking, disposing of or being in possession of protected wild-

life, with a maximum penalty of $38,685 and/ or 24 months imprisonment.

Under the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act 1986 the maximum penalty for cruelty is $40,297.50 and/or 12 months imprisonment.

Environment Minister Lily D'Ambrosio said it was one of Australia's biggest wildlife trafficking investigations, resulting in multiple arrests.

"This is a very disturbing case, where reptiles have been taken from the wild and treated completely inhumanely - all in the pursuit of financial gain by a gang of criminals.

"Such sickening abuse of animals will not be tolerated in Victoria and I commend all the agencies involved for detecting this cruel and illegal activity and taking strong action against the perpetrators."

Bowling fun around the rinks for English students

By Brendan Rees Migrants of all ages have been taking a break from their English language classes at Cranbourne Chisholm TAFE for some lawn bowl fun in Cranbourne.

They enjoy one hour sessions each fortnight at the Cranbourne RSL Bowls Club to learn and experience bowls while mingling with community. Club treasurer Kate Currie said the sessions helped new Australians to get "out of their comfort zone."

participating and try really hard, and the few that sit out urge them on," she said.

English teacher Ruth Ryan from Chisholm TAFE Cranbourne said everyone had a "good go at bowling."

"Many of the middle aged women were jumping about like young girls stealing the bowls from their friends so they could have more turns - just wonderful," she said.

"Kay and her team of two were amazing and made everyone feel very welcome. Instructions were clear and easy and we gave them a big thank you and a round of applause before we left."

Crestani runs for senate

By Jessica Anstice Harry Dickson has always been a keen Richmond supporter and nothing has changed as he heads into his 100th year.

Turning 100 called for a week-long celebration surrounded by family and friends.

Mr Dickson has had celebrations with Aveo Edrington Park Retirement Village in Berwick, Freemasons where he has been a member for 75 years, Cardinia Club and Balnarring Racing Club where he has been a member since 1973.

About 120 people attended Mr Dicksons birthday party at the Berwick retirement village on Friday, including ex Richmond AFL player Francis Bourke, ex Hawthorn AFL player Geoff Ablett, City of Casey mayor Amanda Stapledon, Member for Gembrook Brad Battin, Member for Latrobe Jason Wood and One Nation’s Esther Baker.

“It feels terrific to turn 100. I really have been celebrating,” he said.

“For my 100th birthday, I want to keep healthy and to be actively enjoying life every day.”

On March 6, 100 years ago, Mr Dickson was born in a two-storey house in Brunswick.

“Mum was pregnant with me when she slipped one day and fell down the stairs. I was born that day, two months premature,” he said.

“The midwife just threw me onto a bed and left me as they didn’t think I would make it.

“Sometime later my grandmother came over from Burnley and found me on the bed.

She picked me up and called to my mother that I was still breathing.”

For the three months following, he was lathered in lard and whiskey three times a day.

“That’s my excuse for still enjoying a drink,” he laughed.

“So, I shouldn’t have made it past day one and here I am 100 years later.

Harry Dickson celebrated his 100th birthday with friends and family at Edrington Park Village in Berwick on Friday. 191197 “Along the way there have been plenty of times I could have died, cycling down Olivers Hill and many other dangerous activities I have engaged in, but here I am 100 years old.

Life is what you make it!”

On a typical day, Mr Dickson gets up, and is “really happy to be upright and breathing,” he said.

“I walk around the village every morning and afternoon. I read the newspaper in morning. Every week I cook fruit cakes and share these. I love to talk with people and enjoy meeting new people.”

To stay young, he keeps active.

“You have to make yourself active, every day,” he said. “Get out, meet people, greet everyone even people you don’t know. We can learn something from everyone, but you need to be active and get out.”

The best advice Mr Dickson has for a young person is to show respect.

“I think respect is important, respect yourself and respect other people,” he said.

“Discipline is also important and we need to be self-disciplined. But most importantly, enjoy life!"

Casey deputy mayor Rosalie Crestani is standing for election in the Australian Senate.

Cr Crestani has been endorsed as the lead candidate of Christian conservative party Rise Up Australia.

Her platform includes foreign-owned companies paying a "fair share" of tax, tightening border security and to investigate building thorium nuclear reactors or battery supplies.

Thorium was a potential means for lower energy prices and cleaner emissions, Cr Crestani said.

Being more stable than uranium, "it is feasible and it's something that Australia is ready for".

She fears that the medevac-ing of sick asylum seekers from Manus Island to Christmas Island or the Australian mainland for hospital treatment could be exploited by people smugglers.

She would like the "loophole" closed, with rare exceptions such as orphaned children. No other family members would be allowed to follow them to Australia.

Cr Crestani does not support the Greater Dandenong Council-led campaign for the Government to reverse its cuts to Status Resolution Support Services payments to asylum seekers living in the community.

The council argues that the cuts leave hundreds of asylum seekers and their families without income and destitute.

The Labor Party has pledged to reverse the cuts, if elected to Government.

"There's too much support now. The aged pensioners are missing out on the support they need ," Cr Crestani said.

"We have to strike a good balance."

Cr Crestani says she's willing to work with any party or independent.

She describes Prime Minister Scott Morrison as a "great leader compared to what's been in the past".

Rosalie Crestani is running for Rise Up Australia for Senate elections.

A large field of small parties is expected to contest and make the Senate's make-up nearly impossible to predict.

One of the players is the much-advertised United Australia Party fronted by Clive Palmer.

"I certainly think he's got more money than us," Cr Crestani quipped.

"We can be trusted. If we can be faithful with a little (money), we can then be faithful with a lot."

She said the party believed that "God takes interest in the affairs of mankind and Christian beliefs are inherent to good governance".

Having run in the 2013 federal elections, Cr Crestani felt there was a "changing of the guard" happening in national politics.

"It's an ideal opportunity to put out ideas that the country has to change."

However Mrs O'Toole, of Lyndhurst, was attacked by the armed assailant who pushed her into a glass cabinet and stabbed her several times.

"He was screaming like a lunatic," she recalled.

During the attack Mr O'Toole, who suffered from Parkinson's Disease, came out from the workshop to defend his wife and began wrestling with the assailant.

"We were just trying to fight him off ... Dermot was desperately trying to save me."

"Dermot fell over, he tripped over and he turned on him and stabbed him to death," she said.

Mrs O'Toole attempted to pull the offender away from her husband and in doing so she was

further assaulted. The assailant then ran out of the shop.

Mr O'Toole, 64, was fatally wounded and tragically died at the scene.

The robber, Gavin Perry, 27, was high after taking ice and on parole at the time of the murder.

He was jailed for 27 years in 2014 for the crime.

Mrs O'Toole remembers her husband of 41 years as a wonderful man who was a funny, kind and loyal man."I had the best husband and we had a great life together," she said. "Life has just been horrible since."

By Brendan Rees Fountain Gate Secondary College (FGSC) students embraced some eccentric dos and styles during their swimming carnival held on Wednesday 6 March.

School Houses competes against one another in a variety of activities, both competitive and novelty.

The day began with students from Year 7 to Year 12 lined up for the buses, crazy hair, coloured shirts and funky sunscreen in check.

Starting off with the Year 7 races, students gallantly dived into the brisk waters at the Doveton Pool, enthusiasm undeterred by the

cold, College Principal Pete Hanratty said.

"On the sidelines, the Student Leadership team was busy painting faces and beautiful henna while FGSC's Team S.A.N.I.T.Y served up hot sausages and snacks to sate the hungry students' appetites," he said.

Team S.A.N.I.T.Y is currently raising money through multiple fundraisers for their 2019 trip to the US where they will be representing FGSC at the International Conference for Future Problem Solving.

"The day finished with a fashion show where students strutted their costumes down the concrete catwalk." Mr Hanratty said.

‘Annoyed’ over battery theft

By Brendan Rees A Cranbourne man has expressed his dismay after a car and truck battery was allegedly stolen from the front of his home on Saturday 2 March.

Malcolm Johns, 75, said a man approached him at his front door on Hotham Street earlier in the day asking to have the batteries which he told him 'no'.

"I came out to the door and he's standing there and I said no. Now I haven't got a battery," he said.

"Very, very annoyed. When you say no, it means no."

According to Mr Johns his neighbour told him he had seen people "go around on a push bike and then they have a car following them."

"They went to his door on a push bike asking for batteries as well."

Mr Johns said he had the truck battery on charge and says both batteries, worth about $450, were taken sometime between 10 pm Saturday 2 March and 11am on Sunday 3 March.

"I can't leave anything out. I've got to leave my door shut but not locked because of my heart attack. If someone wants to get in they don't have to knock the house down," he said.

"You should be able to leave things on your porch not touched," he said.

"I'm probably old fashioned that's the way I look at it."

Charlotte versus the world A Clyde North student is going on the trip of a lifetime to the US to represent Australia in the 2019 World Championships of Performing Arts.

Charlotte Cestnik of Hillcrest Christian College will travel to Long Beach, California, in July to participate in an Olympics-style performing arts competition along with applicants from 50 countries from all over the world.

The Year 10 student will take part in workshops and performance opportunities to further enhance her singing after being selected by the International Entertainment Panel to represent Australia.

Charlotte has been involved in school productions and schools on stage performances, and is currently studying the newly introduced Certificate II in VET Music Industry.

"This is an opportunity of a lifetime and could open many career doors and we are certain Charley will bring back gold for Australia," National Director Lizette Hunt said.

The official World Championships of Performing Arts celebrates its 23rd year in July 2019, and is now universally cited as the one-and-only official global event for performers and entertainers both amateur and professional!

Griff O'Neil, competition president and founder, and a one-time executive of the Miss Universe Pageant, has recruited over 75 scouts and national directors to scour the globe for outstanding talent.

"This is the only Olympic-style talent competition ever created and a rare opportunity for the privileged few selected to participate at this elite world event," Mr O'Neil said.

More than 75,000 applicants from over 50 countries auditioned to participate in the USA this year for a spot to compete at the ultimate world meet staged in the beautiful Westin Long Beach Hotel in Long Beach, California, USA. Selected to represent Australia from Victoria is Charley Cestnik, who is set to become a part of the anticipated highly successful 2019 Australian team.

Money Bags eyes riches

By Hayley Wildes The world's richest 1600-metre race - the AllStar Mile - is set to take over Flemington Racecourse on Saturday.

Boasting a $5 million prize pool, the All-Star Mile is in its first year and is the only race in Australia where the general public plays a role in choosing the final field of 14 horses.

Cranbourne-trained Mr Money Bags was one of 10 horses voted into the field, finishing 10th in voting with just over 5000 public votes.

Four horses were also added to the field as wildcard entries.

Cranbourne Turf Club CEO Neil Bainbridge spoke about how the club rallied behind local trainer Robbie Griffiths and the four-year-old Mr Money Bags.

"The club got behind the horse and it's great for Cranbourne to be represented in the

All-Star Mile," Bainbridge said.

"Robbie Griffiths is a wonderful Cranbourne person and the club is very excited for him and his team to get a horse in the field - we wish Robbie and all the connections all the best in what will be a pretty special day on Saturday."

Having won at Flemington previously, the appropriately-named Mr Money Bags has proven himself as a strong performer at the track and while Bainbridge acknowledges the tough field he will go up against, he believes Mr Money Bags can come away with the win.

"He's performed well there in the past and he's in very good hands with Robbie and his team, but it's going to be a very difficult assignment," he said.

"When you put $5 million of prize money up, there's going to be a number of quality gallopers in the field and that's the case here.

"He'll be there to give it his best shot and

he'll have everyone in Cranbourne supporting him and we're all hopeful that the horse will perform very well."

With plenty on the line in the richest 1600-metre race, Bainbridge highlighted the strength of the Cranbourne stables in producing world-class horses that can compete with the best of the best.

"Cranbourne has always played a pretty significant role in the major Autumn and Spring carnivals," he said.

"At the moment there are 158 licenced trainers training out of Cranbourne and it produces around 7500 starters a year - it's Australia's biggest and busiest training complex.

"Nearly one in five runners at every Victorian race meeting are trained out here at Cranbourne.

"It's great for our trainers to be able to compete in these $5 million races."

Locals will be right behind Mr Money Bags on the weekend.

If his name is anything to go by, Mr Money Bags will be right in the thick of the action when they turn for the Flemington straight on Saturday.

Cranbourne’s moving forward

By Nick Creely Cranbourne president Gerry Kelly understands that there will be "chatter" surrounding the club heading into the AFL Outer East season, but insists the club is in tip-top shape and can't wait to get the season started.

The Eagles kick off their season on 13 April against Beaconsfield, and will have a new-look about them in 2019 after going down in a brave preliminary final defeat to Narre Warren, with several senior players departing, most notably legendary sharpshooter Marc Holt to Karingal.

But Kelly said that it presents an exciting new opportunity for the next batch of Cranbourne stars to step up to the plate in the Premier division.

"I'm sure there's chatter about Cranbourne going around everywhere, maybe some people will be surprised when we actually get the season started," he said.

"The boys have been training really well, we're ready to go.

"There's going to be a lot of quality players here this year - Shaun Marusic, Ryan Jones, a cranbournenews.starcommunity.com.au

young bloke by the name of Cam Angus has been training the house down.

"You look through our list, it's very strong, so we're very happy with how it's going - it presents a new opportunity with lots of new players, and there's opportunities everywhere for young players to step up and play senior footy.

"We have lots of good players."

Kelly said that the club did all they could to be part of the MPNFL in 2019 and beyond, but once that passed, the AFL Outer East competition provided a tremendous opportunity for the club to continue building its brand and branching out into the Yarra Valley.

"We've behind the eight ball a little bit, because we weren't preparing for Outer East, we were hoping to get into the Peninsula league," he said.

"But that didn't work out, so we're really looking forward to being in the Outer East, maintaining our old rivalries with the clubs and looking forward to playing some new clubs, going to some new country towns, it's fantastic.

DDCA TURF 1 REVIEW - SEMI-FINALS It took a sublime performance from spinner Jarryd Straker to topple the fearsome Buckley Ridges, and now Springvale South have advanced through to yet another grand final.

Ironically, the two sides met each other in the same fixture last year, but it was Malinga Bandara who was the star of the show as the Bloods won easily.

It was a low scoring thriller between the two clubs once again on Saturday and Sunday, with Bloods skipper Craig Slocombe winning the toss and electing to bat at Alex Nelson Reserve.

Star Bucks seamer Jurgen Andersen (4/17) loomed as the danger, finding the wicket of both Nathan King and Michael Vandort early, and when Daniel Watson (1/15) managed to claw out Tim Ford without scoring, the home side well and truly had their backs against the wall at 3/22.

Association legend Steve Spoljaric (24) looked comfortable amid a sublime spell by Andersen, but he eventually snared the key man with a ripping caught and bowled to leave them hanging precariously at 5/50.

The score soon became 7/56 after Rob Peat (3/64) went to work to pick up Slocombe and Jarrod Armitage in a matter of four deliveries, which included an absolute stellar catch from Ben Watson, and the very real prospect of the Bucks winning the match by the end of day one was a feasible reality.

But, this Bloods side never gives in, fighting their way back from despair to somehow post a competitive 147, with Malinga Bandara (25), Liam Hamilton (23), Matt Wetering (31 not out) and Straker (12) showing nerves of steel to rummage together enough runs to defend.

At stumps on the first day, the Bucks seemed home at 2/65, and despite star captain-coach David White falling in the final moments of the day and the ball appearing to turn square, the visitors were well and truly in the box seat.

And they couldn’t have seen it coming at all, with one of the great finals spells from a spinner that has taken 22 wickets post-Christmas and become arguably the most dangerous tweaker in the competition.

Straker (7/34) completely dismantled one of the most seasoned batting orders in local cricket, turning the ball a mile, bowling with pin-point accuracy to have the Bucks searching for an answer to stop him.

But they just couldn’t, falling for just 116 in 61 overs, a dramatic collapse of 8/51, with Daniel Watson contributing 43 of those runs himself.

Straker’s remarkable spell included 28

overs, with 12 maidens, while Malinga Bandara (3/51) provided plenty of support as the pair bowled 55 overs between them.

The Bloods then made sure of their work despite losing 2/10 in their second dig, batting out 29 overs to finish on 3/52, and more importantly, a well-deserved grand final spot in a few weeks’ time.

It was an even more extraordinary contest down at Frawley Road, meanwhile, with the heroics of Matt Chasemore almost stealing a win from the clouds against Hallam Kalora Park.

But cricket’s a cruel game, and there’s no tomorrow for the Bears, who fell agonisingly short by just the seven runs.

Once again, it was a game where momentum shifted as quickly as wickets fell, with the Hawks winning the toss and batting on day one.

Reliable openers Ben Hillard and Leigh Booth knocked around 38 for the first wicket, but the Bears went to work to rummage through the top order, with the Hawks falling to 5/75, before a stunning surge by Chasemore (4/26) saw the home side in disarray at 7/87, after snaring the dangerous Jordan Hammond, Ryan Hillard and Ciaron Connolly without them getting away.

It took a brilliant, brave knock from Kevin Kean (60) to turn the tide, combining superbly with Peter Sofra (24) and Chris Pereria (19) to completely shift the momentum and lift the home side to 206.

The Hawks managed to snare a wicket right before stumps, with Will Whyte (4/53) breaking through with only minutes to play to leave the visitors 1/1.

But a new day brings a fresh start, but the Hawks were simply unstoppable, with Whyte and gun quick Jordan Hammond (5/60) piercing through the top order with precision, snaring the dangerous Nathan Pilon in his final innings in the DDCA for a duck, and suddenly at 5/27, the Bears may have been already thinking about Mad Monday.

But not Matt Chasemore, who knuckled down with the same intensity that has served him so well throughout a glittering career.

Starting slowly before gradually accelerating, Chasemore looked indestructible, combining for strong partnerships with Jack Phillips (20) and Brendan Rose (17) to keep his side in it.

Batting with the lower order, the skipper plundered a glorious 101 off 181 balls, batting for over five hours to draw his side within reach.

Keogh’s back in the fold

By Nick Creely Highly respected cricket coach Brian Keogh is back at Casey-South Melbourne, after the Swans announced on Thursday that he will be returning to the top job for three years.

After leading the Swans to a shock finals appearance in 2016/17, and being lauded inside and outside of the club for the way he manages players and gets the very best out of them, 'BK' was forced to resign at the end of that season due to work commitments. But, now he's back.

Keogh told Star News Group that there's a little bit of unfinished business, and can't wait to get back "home".

"There was only ever one club I wanted to go back to, I always felt like I was going to go back eventually," he said.

"But they are really privileged positions, and when you do walk away, you always have uncertainty about whether you can come back or not."

Keogh said negotiations happened pretty quickly, and once he knew he had the time to once again commit to the job, he didn't hesitate in saying yes.

"I watched a fair bit (this season), and have kept a pretty keen eye on the boys," he said. "(The discussions) started not that long ago - It got me interested, so it was a no brainer for me at all."

Keogh said he doesn't want to change much of what's already been built at Casey Fields, and hopes the club can continue to be as inclusive as it can be to the community. He simply wants to pick up where he left off.

"What's important is the infrastructure around the club - there's a lot of people doing a lot of work," he said.

"I want to build this community part of the club - in a lot of regards its been built, and the support we get from parents, grandparents,

and the local community has been great. I want to come in and be as inclusive as I can, and we can continue to do more.

"I want to also keep building our relationship with the Cranbourne Cricket Club, the Gippsland region and the DDCA. "Hopefully I can lead it, and have some fun."

The Swans have confirmed that Nick Jewell has departed from the club after just one season as coach.

The news certainly got the Swans motivated for the final round of the season, with Casey-South Melbourne finishing the season off on a high on Saturday to finish ninth on the table.

Defending 287 against Ringwood on day two of their clash at Russell Lucas Oval, the Swans ended the Rams' unlikely surge at finals by rolling them for just 236, albeit without star skipper Ian Holland.

The Rams looked like they would do it fairly easily after at one stage being 2/160, but a collapse, sparked by a brilliant effort from Josh Dowling (4/35), as well as great supporting acts from Nathan Lambden (2/43) and Dylan Hadfield (2/48), got the job done away from home.

MPCA - PROVINCIAL ROUND 14 Despite finishing the season with a strong win against Flinders at BA Cairns Reserve, Pearcedale will officially be relegated out of Provincial after a tough season.

On Saturday, however, the Panthers at least found a reason to smile, racking up a strong total of 8/217 off 40, with Brad Trotter (88) and skipper Kaine Smith (50) starring.

Flinders fought hard to bat out the game to finish 3/171, but the Panthers couldn't improve their percentage enough to claw off the bottom of the table.

Cranbourne ladies storm into decider Despite the loss, it has been a good year for the team, finishing in the finals. On Tuesday, Narre Warren was in front at lunch but failed to continue their form on the resumption. Eric Sydenham, Wally Finlayson, Arthur Scheurer and Jim Millar were the exception, winning 2917. Judy Naughton, Reg Young, Geoff Ampt and Rod Lane went down 11-32 and Keith Mark, Wilma Haringsma, Colin Groom and Wilma Stevenson went down 9-35.

Narre Warren's pennant teams completed their year with a loss to Berwick in the section semi-final at Fountain Gate. Despite the loss, it was the same as midweek pennant, a successful year for the team. They were promoted from a lower division after last year and to make the finals was a big effort. Keith Mark, Alan Mark, Wally Finlayson and Norm Hosmer were the only winning rink (21-20) while Mark Groom, Jim Kempf, David Wilkinson and Ralph Devonshire drew 17-17. Michael Graham, Graham Dodd, Stan Robinson and Carl Lapham just missed, going down 21-22, but Wilma Haringsma, Peter Lister, Philip Howard and Geoff Miller were not allowed into the game, going down 15-27. CRANBOURNE BOWLS Cranbourne ladies playing in the combined Division 1/premier competition have stormed into the Sectional grand final defeating Montmorency by 25 shots.

It was a happy trip home from Montmorency on the Trios bus after the sensational win.

The third mid-week Cranbourne side defeated Mulgrave CC in the Div 3 sectional Semi-Final, but lost to Churchill/ Waverley in the sectional grand-Final. A great effort for everyone who played in the side during the year.

The six-a-side Cranbourne team lost to Cardinia Waters in the Semi-Final in a close game.

They also had a great year and it was pleasing that many players at the club had an opportunity to play a game in this team during the year.

Cranbourne Ladies Division 1 Cranbourne ladies come up against Clayton in the Division 1 Sectional Grand-final to be played this Tuesday at Edithvale. The form against Clayton has been good during the year and the ladies go in confident after the great win against Montmorency, but grand-finals are tough to win so it will come down to the form on the day.
