Reflecting on Black Saturday

By Brendan Rees It was a day that is still etched in the memories of many people.

Marking the tenth anniversary of the Black Saturday fires this week, Star News spoke to those who were caught in the events of that horror day on the 7 February, 2009.

This home pictured was lost to the devastation of the Narre Warren North fires.

The fire began in Harkaway and was contained by firefighters at 12.23pm. However, the fire reignited on the Robinsons Road side of Crawley Road when a resident cut down a smoking branch, causing burning embers to hit dry fuel on the ground, the 2009 Royal Commission report found.

‘Crazed’ driver Dramatic dash-cam footage has emerged of the moment a crazed driver careered into oncoming traffic in Cranbourne on Tuesday 4 February.

The hair-raising footage captured the driver drifting across onto the wrong side of the road on the Western Port Highway, narrowly missing cars.

Dave Cowasji of Noble Park captured the footage on his dash-cam as he was travelling east on Hall Road when “all of a sudden I heard this bloody noisy car shoot past on my right hand side.”

He said unmarked police cars were “whizzing past on the shoulder and emergency lane.”

Mr Cowasji said the driver was “leaving a big trail of dust” as his front bumper bar had partly come off and was dragging.

“He was making a massive racket. Next I saw the police helicopter arrive,” Mr Cowasji said.

“I was taken aback for a moment. I don’t know what this guy was running from.

“Crazy’s not the word. It was nuts,” he said.

“I worried innocent people would be harmed,“ he said.

“I wasn’t frightened as such; I worried for the other road users. It could be a pregnant

“I tried to keep as close but I got held back by the traffic,” he said.

Another witness described on Facebook’s Casey Crime Page of “a psycho was just fanging it down the wrong side” of the Western Port Highway in a red car.

In a statement, Victoria Police spokeswoman Elaine Cooney said a 29-year-old Cranbourne West man was arrested following a short pursuit.

“Police were searching for the man in relation to multiple offences which occurred last week. He is currently assisting police with their enquiries,” she said.

Black Saturday 10 years on Special commemorative edition

The day that changed lives

By Brendan Rees Fire Officer Ian Glass started work two hours early on Black Saturday to help out crews trying to save houses from advancing flames.

“It was pretty hectic due to trying to get resources there,” the 30-year veteran of Cranbourne CFA brigade recalled.

Mr Glass was working as the incident controller of two Lynbrook fires on February 9, 2009 which burnt 12 hectares and destroyed homes.

He says it was difficult to “to get a handle on where the fire was going because there was smoke and flames everywhere.”

A Coral Drive fire in Lynbrook started at 4.48pm in a grassy area along Coral Drive in Narre Warren South.

A 2009 Victorian Bushfires Royal Commission final report found the grassy area appeared to have “acted as a corridor,” assisting in the fire’s spread to the boundaries of properties on Langbourne Drive.

The cause of the fire has not been determined, the report found.

Another fire also started on the western side of the South Gippsland Highway, about 300 metres north of Golf Club road, Lynbrook.

A wind change allowed the Coral Drive fore to head towards Langbourne Drive, the report said.

Residents tried to defend their properties with buckets and wheelie bins full of water.

“We started getting some appliances on it and it pretty much managed to stop around near the residential area after affecting some of the homes.”

Mr Glass said the day changed the lives of everyone that day, and for firefighters.

“We take some learnings out of everything and make sure our people safe. That’s what my

job as incident controller to ensure everyone goes home safely.

“Obviously our messaging through social media and various other forms has improved dramatically,“ he added.

“Just hope it never happens again,” he said.

“Hopefully we’re educating the public.”

Ten years on, Mr Glass still tries not to remember Black Saturday as his son nearly lost

his life in Kinglake.

“They were lucky they just got out. The fire was pretty much on their backdoor, and they drove out of there and the flames were hitting their car.

“They were very, very lucky,” he said.

Battered by storms

By Brendan Rees A massive clean up was undertaken after wild storms lashed across Casey, bringing down trees and cutting off power to thousands on Wednesday evening 30 January.

After a sweltering hot day, a severe thunderstorm described as a "mini-tornado" sparked hundreds of calls for help with the Narre Warren SES responding to 164 jobs from 5.30pm.

Tooradin badly bared the brunt of the storm where the roof of tidemaster boat on the foreshore flung off, flying across South Gippsland Highway.

"We had customers in, and they had to hide behind the counter because they could see the all the roof of the tide master coming past them," Tooradin Ice-cream Shop owner Alissa Light said.

"We had to evacuate them because they were too scared, so we had to put them in the bakery so they could finish off eating their icecream."

Ms Light said two of her signs also blew off, damaging their garden bench, leading her to add: "I can't believe no one got injured."

"The airconditoner has fallen over on the roof, the power was off, the gutters on the roof are ruined," she said.

A power blackout until 10pm meant thousand dollars' worth of ice-cream had to be thrown out at her shop.

Devon Meadows, Lynbrook, Cranbourne, Hampton Park, Clyde and Narre Warren South were also reportedly badly hit by the storm.

SES Narre Warren Unit Controller Damian Burns said crews attended nearly a hundred jobs including removing trees from roads and carriageways, and cleaning up damage or blockage to houses and buildings. No injuries were reported.

SES units from Malvern, Monash, Whitehorse, Maroondah and Glen Eira also assisted."Major jobs were for trees down with volunteers still out on jobs well past midnight," Mr Burns said.

A woman and infant were rushed to hospital after reportedly being attacked by a greyhound in Cranbourne on Saturday morning 2 February.

Ambulance Victoria spokeswoman Lana Wilson said paramedics were called were called to the scene.

"An infant was assessed for upper body injuries. They were taken to The Royal Children's Hospital in a stable condition. she said.

"A woman in her thirties was also assessed for lower body injuries and was taken to the Royal Melbourne Hospital in a stable condition."

Casey manager of safer communities Caroline Bell said the greyhound was formally surrendered to council by its owner to be destroyed.

"Council is continuing with its investigation into the attack," she said.

Bandits demand phone

Signs on an icecream shop in Tooradin blew off during the storm. 189989 The Bureau of Meteorology said wind gusts ranged between 90km/h to 100 km/h.

"It's what you might consider a cap in the atmosphere, so the cap was holding for much of the day and then around mid-afternoon finally it was breached and there was rapid thunderstorm development," duty forecaster Stuart Coombs said.

The Royal Botanic Gardens in Cranbourne was lashed with 19 millimetres where several trees fell and a number of walking paths washed out.

"A large Swamp Gum fell near the Woodland Picnic Area and an old Acacia Black Wattle Fell in the overflow carpark. The Natural Areas team have been out all morning cleaning up the debris," Royal Botanic Gardens Cranbourne Conservation Officer Ollie Sherlock said.

Devon Meadows CFA brigade captain Andrew Swain said power lines down were brought in Muddy Gates Lane in Tooradin with power cut for eight hours.

He said the thunderstorm also brought down power lines on Worthing Road in Devon Meadows.

SES," Mr Swain said. "I haven't seen rain and wind like that 16 years, it was just like a minitornado."

Other shops in Tooradin affected included the Boardwalk Cafe where water seeped through the back roller door, while a gate was blown off at the Post Office. Rubbish bins were also reportedly detached and "flown down the road" on South Gippsland Highway.

Tooradin Primary school principal Zania Cope said three trees came down near their staff carpark while branches fell onto the oval.

"We're just so lucky there's nothing that went through any building," she said.

Ms Cope was astounded by the community spirit in "rallying together" in the clean-up.

"The camaraderie amongst our community helping people in need was sensational. We feel very honoured and privileged to be part of this community," she said.

According Blind Bight resident Bob O'Connell, power was out for 24 hours, causing a blow-out on his fridge."That was an absolute pain," he said. "The oven went at the same time."

"I was really worried, there's probably $300$400 of bait in the fridge. Luckily, they reckon you're right after 24 hours."

Carpenter convicted for illegal building work A carpenter has been convicted and fined $5000 by the Dandenong Magistrates' Court for seven breaches of the Building Act and Domestic Building Contracts Act. Chameoeun Soun, of Hammerhead Carpentry and Design, was hired by a property owner in October 2015 to carry out $7000 worth of renovation work in Cranbourne. At the time, projects valued at more than $5000 required the builder and owner to enter into a major domestic building contract, and could only be entered by a registered builder. Mr Soun has never been registered with the Victorian Building Authority.

Mr Soun failed to provide the property owner with a formal contract and received a deposit greater than 10 per cent of the contract price before commencing work, breaching the Domestic Building Contracts Act. In November 2015, the property owner

hired Mr Soun to build a laundry, which Mr Soun worked on without obtaining the required building permit. The owner also hired Mr Soun to build a carport valued at $6000, and again did not enter a formal contract for this additional work.

In February 2016, Mr Soun stopped working on the property, and left the work unfinished.

When interviewed by the VBA, Mr Soun said he was unaware he could not enter into a building contract valued at more than $5000 without being a registered builder. He also said he didn't know a permit was necessary for the laundry work.

He was scheduled to appear in the Dandenong Magistrates' Court on 17 January 2019, but did not attend or appoint legal representation. The matter proceeded in Mr Soun's absence. The Court convicted Mr Soun and fined him a total of $5000 plus costs.

The VBA's Acting Chief Executive Officer, John Thompson, said anyone carrying out building work needs to know their legal obligations regarding building contracts and permits.

"The regulations for carrying out building work are clearly stated in the Building Act and Domestic Building Contracts Act," Mr Thompson said. "These laws are designed to protect property owners and maintain proper standards in the building industry.

"This case is a good reminder that home owners should always check whether their builder is registered before entering into a contract."

Home owners can visit vba.vic.gov.au/find to check the registration of their builder.

The threshold for major domestic building projects was raised from $5000 to $10,000 in August 2017.

Two teenagers have been charged following an attempted robbery in Cranbourne on Thursday 31 January.

Police say a 16-year-old boy was walking along William Street, Cranbourne when it's alleged he has been approached from behind by a boy, a man, and a girl about 9pm.

One of the men grabbed the victim by the neck and demanded his mobile phone while the others filmed the incident on their phones. The victim managed to break free and ran from the scene.

The bandits chased the victim for about 100 metres before the group headed towards the Cranbourne CBD where they were arrested by police a short time later.

A 15-year-old boy from Cranbourne North and an 18-year-old man from Cranbourne were both charged and bailed in relation to the matter, and a 15-year-old girl from Cranbourne West released pending enquiries.

Cameras catch petrol drive-off Cranbourne police hope CCTV images will identify a man allegedly involved in a petrol drive off in Cranbourne North on Tuesday 15 January.

Police allege a silver Holden Commodore bearing stolen registration plates attended the Narre Warren-Cranbourne Road service station about 4.20am.

It's believed the man filled up his car with fuel at BP service station and drove off without making an attempt to pay.

The male driver is described as Caucasian, dark hair and was wearing a black knee brace on his right knee.

Police have released CCTV still images of a male who they believe can assist with their investigation.

Man wanted over attempted burglary Police are seeking to identify a man after an alleged attempted aggravated burglary in Pearcedale on Thursday, 11 October 2018.

At around 8pm, a man attended an Ellwood Drive home before allegedly banging on the front door and yelling at a male inside.

The man then allegedly kicked the fly screen door, made threats towards the victim and jumped on two cars parked in front of the property.

Police have released CCTV images of a man whom they believe may be able to assist in their inquiries. The man had short dark hair, a beard and was wearing dark coloured pants and a blue and white checked shirt.

How long have you been with Casey Cardinia Libraries?

It has been two years. Before that I worked as a library shelver after school.

What has the public's response been like with the new Bunjil Place Library?

That libraries change lives. Positive responses has been received that it has a great architectural place with a variety of educational resources to borrow from. They love the community languages books which helps them to connect with their own culture/community.

Casey Cardinia Libraries helps to ensure that non-English speakers see themselves represented in their communities. The kids love being around books and coming along to our regular free programs.

What is something people don't know about you?

I look on the positive side of every situation.

What is your most memorable moment?

When I first started working as a customer experience library officer with the Casey Cardinia Libraries. With the friendly and helpful staff around, I have loved every one of my experiences working with the organisation.

Where did you grow up as a child?

As a child I grew up in Anguri, a small village in Afghanistan. my family every year.

What is your favourite movie?

I love the Maze Runner film series.

By Brendan Rees Binil Mathew says undertaking plenty of practice exams helped him achieve high VCE results last year.

He was named dux of Cranbourne East Secondary College with an ATAR score of 89.4.

This month, Binil is looking forward to starting a Bachelor Biomedical Science and Commerce at Monash University in Clayton, with hopes of one day becoming a doctor.

"Commerce was a back up to becoming an accountant," he said.

"I'm pretty happy with the score."

"If you start studying from the start of the year basically there's no need to be stressed at the end.

"I did a bunch of practice exams - that made the whole exam process super simple," he added.

Binil said his highest study score was 42 in Chemistry and a 41 for Further Maths. He also studied Maths Methods, Psychology, Biology, and English.

Assistant Principal Penni Roe said seven students achieved an ATAR score in the 80s.

Truck goes up in flames

By Brendan Rees Firefighters responded to a truck fire on Princes Highway in Berwick on Monday evening, 4 February.

CFA trucks from Pakenham, Hallam, Officer and Narre Warren were called to the blaze, which occurred about 6pm between Soldiers Road and Clyde Road.

A CFA media spokesperson said no one was injured and the fire was brought under control by 6.25 pm.

Witness Jennifer Hepburn said she was

driving home on Kangan Drive when she saw the truck "well alight."

"The smoke was pretty dark and there was a lot of it," she said. "I thought it was a grass fire to start with. There wasn't anyone stopped on the freeway that I could see."

Ms Hepburn called triple-zero.

"Of course after a few minutes there were quite a few people jumping out taking pictures.

"There were lots of little explosions too. I'm not sure how it started or anything."

Street parking nightmare

By Brendan Rees A Lynbrook man has described Casey Council's installation of new 'clearer' parking signs on Kangan Drive in Berwick as a "knee-jerk reaction."

It comes after hundreds of commuters have been slugged parking fines in what they say are "unfair" and "confusing signs."

They also protested their angst at a Casey Council meeting on 22 January in which Council said it would introduce "doubling of the statutory signage."

Star News observed parking officers out in force on Wednesday 5 February issuing 12 parking infringement tickets.

Lynbrook resident Michael Drew, who was slapped with $161 parking infringement fine in January, says the new signs are clearer but council hasn't "done any homework" for the 38 parking bays.

"They didn't help people the other day but it's better - the more signage the better."

He says traffic may be congested in the mornings for about 15 minutes - "not the whole two hours."

"There's no way known they should have those signs up during the holidays."

He says the additional signs are a "knee-jerk reaction."

As it stands, the 'no stopping' restrictions operate from 7.30am - 9.30am and 2.30pm -

Mr Drew, who is contesting his ticket at court, also protested with a group of disgruntled commuters at the front of the council chambers at Bunjil Place on Saturday 2 February.

"People are coming in from country area; they do not understand the signs. People have no idea. Everyday there is a new lot of victims" Council says it introduced the signs along Kangan Drive to improve traffic flow for vehicles approaching the Clyde Road intersection.

pregnant mother went for an ultrasound appointment at Casey Hospital on the 18 January when she received an infringement for failing obey a no parking sign.

"She didn't know English and she asked a couple of the ladies that went past asking," she said.

"She found it very unfair especially when she asked some of the people (if she could park)."

Marian Lomatch of Lyndhurst said she also received a parking fine saying it was "unfair" and commuters should be "given more leniency," and not come "back to hefty fines."

First steps to school

By Brendan Rees It was a big day for Preps starting their first day of school at Cranbourne Primary School but they all took it in their stride.

The boys and girls got to know their new classmates through games, and a visit to the library.

Foundation (Prep) coordinator Sarah Prossor said the pupils enjoyed quiet reading time, a snake craft activity and practising writing the letter 'S' through songs and using rice, paint bags and playdough.

"Our school values pride - introducing the letter P for persistence. Students attempted to make domino tracks and show persistence when they fall over," she said.

First steps to school

By Brendan Rees Teary-eyed parents bid their children farewell as they began their first day of school at Tooradin Primary School on Thursday 31 January.

Many of the 47 preppies were all smiles, eagerly awaiting for the first bell of the day to ring to enter their classroom.

"It's always such an exciting time of the year as the new students start their first official year of schooling," Prep teacher Lauren Skitt said.

On their first day students learnt about their new classroom as well as participating in specialist classes such as physical education, art and Italian.

To ease their nerves, the school's Pre-Prep Learning Links program allowed the preps to visit during the fourth term of last year to become more familiar with their new environment and surroundings.

Leading teacher Rachel Davis said as soon as the bell rang at the end of the day "children were tired but eager to bounce out to their family and share the excitement."

"We're all looking forward to a thrilling year of learning and adventure," she said.

Nurseryman faces ‘new road’ threat

By Brendan Rees The owner of a family-run nursery in Hampton Park fears the possibility of closing his doors if a major roads authority does not play fair.

The State Government's Hallam Road Upgrade - which will add an extra lane in each direction between Ormond Road and South Gippsland Highway - will involve the compulsory acquisition of land at the front of Diacos' Family Discount and Garden Rock Supplies.

Anthony Diaco, who manages the business with his father Vince, spoke to Star News last year with his concern about a right-hand turn into his business being removed as part of the roadworks.

He said his business, which depended on 400-600 deliveries a week, would be inconvenienced by having to conduct de-tours.

Mr Diaco says he's tried "to come up with a scenario" with Major Road Projects Authority (MRPA) which have only been "knocked on the head straight away."

"There's no dialogue anymore," he added.

Adding to his frustration is the speed limit on Hallam Road will be increased from 60km/h to 80km/h.

"It's going to make this road very unsafe," Mr Diaco said. "We're doing a lot of deliveries; we want to make it safe."

According to MRPA, improving safety was a key priority for the project as 22 crashes on Hallam Road were recorded since 2012.

"The newly upgraded road environment along with high usage by heavy vehicles and limited entry and exit points along this route warrant a revised speed limit," an MRPA statement said.

Ball boy lives his dream

By Brendan Rees Aadith Dhinakaran was on the ball at this year's Australian Open.

The 13-year-old lived his childhood dream by rubbing shoulders with the world's best players during the tournament held from January 14-27.

"I just really liked the experience," he said.

"The first time I was on court it was nerveracking but as I went, I settled down."

Aadith of Hampton Park, said he was "surprised to be picked" after missing out last year.

He said he was excited to watch Japanese player Naomi Osaka during a match, who went on to win the women's single title.

His favourite player is Roger Federer, and although he didn't get to see him play, he said a highlight was being on Margaret Court Arena.

Aadith got to take home souvenirs including a free blue tooth speaker and earphones, jumper, towel, and cap.

MRPA program director Brendan Pauwels said the project would improve safety for the "thousands of people that travel along Hallam Road or the South Gippsland Highway every day."

By Brendan Rees Rod Floyd can't hold a phone to his ear for more than a couple of minutes without his arm muscles becoming weak.

Twenty-three years ago, Rod was diagnosed with limb-girdle muscular dystrophy type 2B, a progressive muscle-destroying disorder with 60 different variations.

The disorder eventually causes immobility, respiratory problems and cardiac complications. Unfortunately, no cure has been found.

"Probably in the last two years, he's significantly deteriorated and lost his independence," says daughter Prue McKenna of Cranbourne.

"He's in a wheel chair permanently. He's losing his ability to function independently."

At 63, Rod can still use his arms but requires a hoist to get him in and out of bed.

In 2017, he was diagnosed with phenomena. "He could walk, not very far when he went into hospital but when he came out of hospital he lost all ability to walk," says Prue.

Prue will join a host of enthusiastic runners and walkers at this year's tenth-year anniversary Run for Strength Fun Run which is held on Sunday February 17 at Albert Park, to raise funds and awareness for Muscular Dystrophy Australia.

"Unless we raise awareness people don't know about it," says Prue.

Cat rescuer is home at last

One in every 625 people in Australia are affected by muscular dystrophy.

Funds raised from the past decade have help fund research positions at the National Muscular Dystrophy Research Centre at the Royal Children's Hospital, in the hope of finding a treatment or a cure.

A Casey cat rescuer now has a roof over herself and her cats after being left homeless last year.

2nd Chance Cat Rescue founder Daniela Maslen and her husband were hoping to turn their luck around last Christmas after the sale of their Hampton Park home feel through.

All their belongings were packed in semitrailers while they sought temporary accommodation in Harkaway with their cats being kept in enclosures for weeks.

Ms Maslen, who also runs her own cleaning business, said they finally moved into their Cranbourne home just before Christmas.

"It's taking time getting everything ready again," she said.

"Our garage is till like a bomb went off. We haven't unpacked everything from the garage.

I couldn't even take time off work.

According to Ms Maslen, at the time the buyers were "in the process of getting a loan

together" which delayed settlement.

"His lawyer got him a loan through a private lender," Ms Maslen said.

"He had to pay for our storage and accommodation. We didn't get the whole amount for the accommodation from him. I think we got $5,000."

Ms Maslen has applied for a Government grant to build a shelter in their garage.

"We can actually have more cats in there and have adoptions days. The more you can do for the animal welfare the better."

2nd Chance Cat Rescue was recently nominated in the 2018 Casey Australia Day Awards for the Community Group of the Year, which Ms Maslen says was "really, really lovely" to be recognised.

Meanwhile, she and her husband are trying to keep their yard snake-proof yard after "two visitors" in the form of a 1.2 metre snake and baby snake made their way into their garden.

Regional soccer scores City of Casey has celebrated a massive score after construction kicked-off for a new Casey Fields Regional Community Football Facilities project.

A ground-breaking ceremony for the $18 million project was held at Casey Fields with Cranbourne MP Pauline Richards joining Casey councillors and members from local soccer clubs on Tuesday 5 February.

The project, expected to be delivered by the end of 2019, will deliver: Four soccer pitches, including three synthetic and one natural turf Associated infrastructure including floodlighting, fencing, coaches' boxes and goals A regional pavilion with a community room, eight unisex change rooms, a unisex referee change room, public toilets, storerooms, kitchen and canteen Paths, landscaping a public art entrance, and About 200 additional car parks City of Casey Mayor Cr Amanda Stapledon thanked the State Government for its contribution and said the development of the facility would help reduce the shortfall of soccer facilities that currently exists within Casey.

"The new infrastructure will bring further community and professional sport to south east Melbourne, accommodating administration, training and match days and help deliver social, economic and environmental benefits," she said.

"We welcome this funding from the Victorian Government as Council continues to advocate for further infrastructure to help cater to our rapidly growing municipality.

"We look forward to continuing to grow our partnership with the State Government to build sport and recreational facilities, as well as other critical infrastructure such as roads and rail.

"Council is committed to reducing the gap in infrastructure for high demand sports to ensure our community is provided with every opportunity to be active."

This project is jointly funded with a $5 million contribution from the State Government through the Growth Areas Infrastructure Contribution Fund, and a $13m input from the City of Casey.

Land earmarked for new school at Botanic Ridge

By Brendan Rees Families in Botanic Ridge are a step closer to having a new primary school after a site was secured to build a proposed primary school.

The State Government is in the process of acquiring land at 83-85 Browns Road, Botanic Ridge for work to start on a new Botanic Ridge Primary School and early learning facility, which are set to open at the start of 2020.

The Government has been working closely with the current land owners to finalise this acquisition.

Minister for Education James Merlino said: "This is part of our school building boom, ensuring Victorian families have access to great local schools."

In July last year, the State Government announced land at 50S Eliburn Drive, Cranbourne East had been acquired to start work

on a $20.1 million Casey Fields (Five Ways) Primary School which will open in 2020.

As part of the $850 million investment, Labor has also promised to deliver schools in some of the fastest growing communities including: Clyde North East Primary School, opening 2020.

Cranbourne West Secondary and Special School, opening 2021.

Clyde North Primary, opening 2022.

Clyde North Secondary College, opening 2022.

The Andrews Labor Government is building the Education State with an unprecedented $3.8 billion investment in improving, upgrading and building schools to ensure that every community can access a great local school where students are supported to achieve their best.

Devon Meadows Tennis Club head coach Monique Fielding says the club's annual open day was a real hit despite the hot conditions on Sunday 3 February.

Families turned out for the all abilities tennis day at Glover Reserve, who enjoyed learning all aspects of the game.

Fun included drills, free sausage sizzle lunch, free giveaways and membership discounts.

"There were kids there that have never tried tennis before and love it," said Ms Fielding.

"Unfortunately it was 30 degrees on the day...we didn't have the turnout we normally do.

"We did have a few families come day and have a hit," she added.

Ms Fielding said the day aimed to encour-

age people of all ages and abilities to take up tennis.

"It was a chance to promote our club," she said.

She said those who attended were inspired

by Australian Open and "wanted to get out and have a go themselves."

"I just love seeing kids improve, I love being outdoors and I've had a passion for the game my whole life so it's good to be able to incorporate that into my career," she added.

Casey Cr Geoff Ablett also joined the fun, saying council was keen to help people with disabilities to get into sport, recreation and the arts through the Casey All Abilities Foundation.

"We look forward to working with the Devon Meadows Tennis Club. Council has some projects to help as well with facilities," he said.

Black Saturday 10 years on Grief still etched in black Special commemorative edition

By Brendan Rees Peter Moon was on holidays to see the Wooden Boat Festival in Hobart when he got the call that left a lump in his throat.

A fire, which had broken out on Evans Road in Lynbrook and jumped the South Gippsland Highway about 5pm, threatened his Marine workshop in Lynbrook on Black Saturday 7 February "which was getting closer with the howling north wind."

"The caretaker that lived there, he rang me said 'there's a fire coming towards in the pines trees that used by along the edge of South Gippsland Highway'," Mr Moon said.

"And I said 'Get the gates opened so the fire truck will there in a minute.'

"I didn't know what to think, and my wife said 'I think we should go home' and we booked to get back on the ship the next morning," Mr Moon recalled.

According to Mr Moon, firefighters weren't able to arrive at his then Cush Place business until an hour-and-a-quarter later from San Remo and Cowes.

"Once we got the news, the workshop had virtually burnt down, along with six houses along the back there," he said.

"Eventually it got into the grass and came across the paddock even though we had cut a fire break."

Mr Moon, who is the owner of Ebaz Marine Works and Jetty Constructions now based in Carrum Downs, said fire destroyed between $120,000 - $130,000 of equipment including a 4WD fork lift, tractor and trailer.

"All those old dead cypress trees along the edge of the highway...once the fire got into them and the embers coming off it, that was it," he said.

"It just spread sparks everywhere."

Mr Moon, of Hampton Park, remembered being heartbroken and "shell shocked" when he saw the remains of his workshop.

"What's done is done; you can't unlight the fire which I believe was deliberately lit."

Today, Mr Moon says the event that unfolded doesn't occupy his mind.

"Occasionally I think what a hell of a loss, but you get over it and get on with it," he said.

"It was lucky no more houses were burnt and no one lost their life like in other parts of the state.

"We just thank our lucky stars," he said.

Mr Moon says his Carrum Downs business was going strong.

"We're busy up in the Wimmera Mallee, Western District, Central Victoria, Gippsland, not so much in Melbourne.

"Gradually over the years, we've rebuilt or replaced nearly everything all but one piledriver at his stage."

Black Saturday 10 years on Fire to within a whisker Special commemorative edition

By Brendan Rees A family who were caught up in a Narre Warren South fire on Black Saturday count themselves lucky.

Sue and Geoff Herbert were at a wedding on Saturday 7 February, when a fire tore through their street in Langbourne Drive.

"We were very, very lucky. It came within metre of the actual house," Ms Herbert said.

They praised neighbours, some who stood on roofs, with buckets of water and garden hoses "to save as many houses as they could."

"The good thing was how the community came together...people came from everywhere.

"People were using wheelie bins and everything to try and fight the fires," she said.

At the time, police said the fire, believed to be deliberately lit, started along Coral Drive near Ormond Road at 5pm.

A wind change at 5.42pm, according to a 2009 Victorian Royal Commission Report, caused the fire on Coral Drove to head towards Langbourne Drive.

Houses caught in the blaze on Langbourne Drive were relatively news houses built on suburban-sized blocks positioned very close together.

Ms Herbert says it was "some miracle that the fire apparently swung round in the wind and went back out into the paddocks."

The Herberts lost part of their backyard including their children's cubbyhouse, but others were not so lucky.

"It was very hard, coming home and seeing the devastation of the street, and to know our house was still standing - that took a lot out of us," Ms Herbert said.

"You feel sad in the other sense because others lost theirs."

"We just wanted to thank everyone," Ms Herbert said.

She said her family was still haunted by the devastation of the day 10 years on, adding it was a "big learning curve for us all."

"Every time we have those really strong winds in those really hot days it does bother me a bit.

"We are still living here and we still do get very worried, especially with everything going on at the moment, it gets very scary.

"We're constantly getting onto the council to make sure they keep a fire break which they have been," Ms Herbert said.

"We've educated the kids, we've educated ourselves.

"It's mother-nature, and if it's going to happen, whether there's a fire break or not - it's going to happen."

Too close to home as firestorm heat hit the suburbs

By Brendan Rees Sean Constable, the then general manager of Cranbourne Golf Club, didn't have phone reception for hours on Black Saturday as a fire took hold near the golf course.

He was playing golf in Venus Bay with mates and "no one could get hold of me."

"The phone reception down there's terrible, and we had issues with the TV that day for some reason," he recalled.

"We had no idea," he explained, until one of his mate's was able to make a call about 6pm, receiving the news "Victoria was burning."

Fire had broken out along the South Gippsland Highway near the golf club on February 7, 2009 which reportedly came close to residents' homes.

Mr Constable said he "didn't really know what was going on" until he got to work on the Monday, which came as a shock.

However, he contends the "course itself was never under threat," by fire.

"Had it got into the trees maybe along the driveway it could have caused grief but it didn't lucky enough.

"My vivid memory is the picture in the local rag of people standing along the driveway with buckets and hoses," he said.

At the time, Cranbourne North resident Jacqui Quigley said her home had no chance of surviving had the pine trees caught fire.

Ms Quigley told Star News the undergrowth around the trees needed to be cleaned up, and she wanted her community to organise a fire plan after their scare. "It's a shame it takes something like this to bring the community together," Ms Quigley said.

Mr Constable said after the fire, the club received a letter to clear 10-15 metres along the course boundaries, with $100,000 to $150,000 spent clearing trees "because the residents were getting nervous."

Mr Constable is now the general manager of Berwick Montuna Golf Club.

"I live in Berwick; it's close, I thought why not, and I've been here ever since just over seven years.

By Brendan Rees Devon Meadows CFA brigade captain Andrew Swain remembers sending firefighters away on strike teams on Black Saturday as "very stressful."

"That decision always weighs heavy until they return," he says. "You are sending members away from their families into danger."

He says the lead up to Black Saturday was a very hot week and the "warnings reflected that."

"I along with a lot of members still remember that day like it was yesterday."

Mr Swain, who is still the captain of the brigade, had the task of assigning members to their Tanker 1 and field command vehicle to fight fires across the state, while their Tanker 2 "was running from local job to local job."

"The crew on tanker 1 said it was the worst fire conditions they have ever seen, and most of the crew that I sent had more than 20 years' experience each," Mr Swain said.

His crew attended the Lynbrook fires where

residents tried to defend their homes using buckets and wheelie bins full of water. A number of houses were destroyed.

Mr Swain says there was also a mulch fire that started near the old tip in Cranbourne, and "Tanker 2 was the only available vehicle to extinguish that fire."

"Fire behaviour was something that we have never seen before so our thoughts on training for fires did change after that day.

"The thought will be the fact that lives and property were lost and even though they did the best they could, they always feel that if only they could have done that little extra," Mr Swain said.

Adding to the emotion on the day for Mr Swain was the devastation the bushfire left behind in Marysville.

"My family owned a house in Marysville for 35 years and only sold it 12 months before Black Saturday," he says.

"So the news that Marysville was all but wiped out when I spent my childhood up there was very emotional."

By Jessica Anstice Seven homes were destroyed and several others were severely damaged in Narre Warren South on Black Saturday, 10 years ago.

Many residents living in Narre Warren South were unaware that such an immense fire was about to descend on their town, including the Miszkowiec family.

"Moments earlier we had been watching TV distressed about the Wallan fire and how sad it was," Carol Miszkowiec said.

"Then everything started to unfold as we too, were now on fire."

On that day, Mrs Miszkowiec recalls feeling total fear, panic and an overwhelming sadness.

The fire completely demolished the Miszkowiec family home.

Mrs Miszkowiec said her and her family is very humbled by the way family friends and total strangers cared about what they were going through.

"We will forever remember this date and the beautiful people we have come in contact with through such devastation," she said.

Nepean Hearing Audiologist Tony Wilms said that the number of Australians who are hearing impaired is increasing because of both the ageing population - people are living longer and excessive noise - in the workplace and high-level music.

"Hearing loss is often described as the 'invisible disability,'" Mr Wilms said."People often wait for five to 10 years before they seek help. Hearing loss may also be a contributing factor in the speed of onset of dementia. The degree of loss is also correlated to the risk of Alzheimer's disease."

Mr Wilms also said it is important to know about hearing.

"Many people ignore the signs of hearing loss, which include turning the TV or stereo up so loud that others complain, frequently needing to ask others to repeat themselves and not being able to hear properly on the telephone. Constant ringing is also another warning sign of hearing loss,"

he said.

"As technology advances, many people with hearing loss benefit from hearing aids. These innovations have made a positive difference in the way they can communicate and enjoy their lives."

Nicole designs her world

By Narelle Coulter Berwick fashion entrepreneur Nicole Westmorland wants her customers to care for the planet while curating their wardrobe.

In December, 23 year old Nicole launched her eponymous textile business - Westmorland.

The business is based in two rooms of her parents’ Berwick home.

She describes Westmorland as part of the slow fashion movement, where garments and homewares are handmade using environmentally sustainable practices or are upcycled from old garments or discarded pieces of fabric.

Nicole said she had always wanted to launch her own brand, and after two years working for fast fashion giant Cotton On, she decided to take the plunge.

She said she learnt a lot from the hugely successful Geelong based Cotton On, but found it “creatively crippling”.

“I love my own aesthetic. I found it hard to pump out commercial designs because it was not my personal taste. My aesthetic is very bright, colourful, not very commercial.”

After two years in the fast fashion world, she took some time out to travel and “clear my mind” before returning home to launch her own brand.

“I was working on it behind the scenes while I was working full time so I was very busy, but I was very determined and really want to make something of it.

“Travel was good. It let me freshen up and come back with a clear mind.”

Unfettered by the demands and constraints of the corporate fashion world, Nicole felt free to create designs true to her own style which she described as “very young and bold, very vivid and individual”.

“I don’t like to follow trends. I really like to concentrate on sustainability. There are issues with fast fashion which are not great for the earth. I try not to focus on trends, which is easy in terms of my style which is not very on trend

“My pieces are individual, they don’t go out of style and I hope people will love them for a long time.”

The Westmorland range includes screen printed tote bags and t-shirts, cushions, framed lithographs , upcycled clothing and a category Nicole calls Dog Stuff - waterproof jackets and leashes for pooches.

She said she was always a crafty kid.

Her mum tells a story of when Nicole’s kindergarten teacher called her in to see a young Nicole at work.

“Apparently I had an easel set up while everyone else was playing, and I was painting and I would stand back and look at the painting and go ‘no no no’ and go back to it and

keep painting,” Nicole said, laughing.

She taught herself to sew when she was in primary school, making little bags and simple tops for her sisters and friends.

“I’ve always been a maker. I used to make jewellery, anything I could get my hands on.”

After doing well in her VCE at Berwick Secondary College, she studied for a Bachelor of Textile Design at RMIT, all the while dreaming about starting her own business.

‘I has always been my dream to own my own small business, making and designing my own stuff makes me really happy.”

She is quickly learning that being in business involves more than being creative. She is slowly learning about finance and marketing.

“I have never been great at numbers, but I

am confident and believe in myself. I am passionate and determined to make it work.”

Nicole said she is “almost making money” after absorbing the usual start-up costs associated with a new business.

The launch of Westmorland was held at new Berwick entertainment space, Poker Face, late last year. She is now concentrating on promoting the brand through Facebook, LinkedIn, Instagram and Pinterest.

Nicole sent pieces of her work to carefully targeted “influencers” who have helped promote Westmorland on their feeds, among them a graphic artist based in Brunswick and a DJ and MTV personality.

“There is so much you can learn on line these days. There are girl boss websites and young entrepreneurs and blogs and that sort of stuff. “ Sophia Amoruso, the founder of Nasty Girl and Girlboss Media is one of Nicole’s role models. The book Girl Boss sits on the shelf in her studio.

“She started her brand from nothing and that was really inspiring.”

In the next 12 months Nicole wants to narrow her product range to discover her “true brand”.

“I want to find out what is Westmorland.

Clarity would be the best thing. I want to find out who is my market, who is my customer and then cater for them.”

In five years she wants Westmorland to be a well- known, specific product range “even if it’s just a range of t-shirts with my designs”.

“I’d love to be manufacturing in Australia and maybe have someone working with me.”

Nicole is determined to follow her passion wherever it may lead.

“Everyone thought I was mad, quitting my amazing job and going into business. My biggest challenge is being brave.

“You just have to start because if you don’t try you won’t know. I know what I am capable of so I just have to keep moving.”

Night dogs see the lighting

By Brendan Rees Cranbourne Greyhound Racing track will shine under new lights after the club installed new energy-saving LED lighting.

The upgrade at the Grant Street complex will mean an electrical saving cost of about 55 per cent.

“These new LED lights are more environmentally friendly and more economic,” Cranbourne Greyhound Racing Club chief executive Amanda Cameron said.

“We also believe they will be better for the welfare of the greyhounds racing at night as they have brighter lighting for racing with a better coverage.“ The new lighting was made thanks to a grant from the Victorian Racing Industry Fund.

Castle Electrical won the contract to carry out the installation with Carrum Downs based Plusrite Australia supplying 400 watt LED floodlights with special optical lens.

Plusrite Australia managing director Ross Herdman said when power was lost with the old technology there would be up to a 20 minute start-up time before the lights would turn on again.

“With LED you can turn them off and on instantly and will start immediately,” he said.

“I know in the past Cranbourne racing codes have lost racing because of lights taking a long time to restart.”

He added with the new LED lighting, only 26,800 watts of power would be used meaning a power saving of about 65 per cent.

And they’re set for the Cup Australia's biggest country greyhound series comes to an exciting conclusion this Saturday in Cranbourne.

The third annual TRFM Gippsland Carnival will be decided at the Spolly's Syndications Group 2 Cranbourne Cup. The carnival has succeeded in drawing huge crowds to Gippsland and has quickly become a highlight of the Victorian greyhound racing calendar.

This year's series consisted of three country cups beginning with the Sale Cup on Boxing Day, before moving to the Warragul Cup on 12 January.

The 45th Cranbourne Cup will be a highlight of the series with the first and second place getters from last weekend's heats producing a spectacular field to compete for the $47,000 top prize.

The qualifiers include three Cranbournetrained greyhounds, including Pearcedale trainer Seona Thompson's two greyhounds Azkaban and Poke the Bear; Thompson is the only trainer with multiple greyhounds in the final.

Poke the Bear is looking for redemption from Box 2 after finishing third in the 2018 Cranbourne Cup. He is currently Australia's premier sprinter and if he wins will surpass $500,000 in prizemoney.

Thompson's other sprinter, Azkaban, is also on a winning streak having won his last three races. This is his first country cup final, but he is no stranger to victory having won last year's Victorian Cup on the Cranbourne Cup night.

The fastest heat time was set by Orson Allen, who clocked in just .01sec from the track record set by Pop the Cork in 2016; this exceptional greyhound, trained by 25-year-old Correy Grenfell, is one of Australia's most decorated sprinters and is a country cup regular.

In contrast, winning the Cranbourne Cup would be a career highlight for trainers Ian Brown, Michelle Nolan, Paul Abela and Graham James.

Ian Brown's greyhound, Wears Woodleigh, may be the least experienced in the field with just 19 starts, but he showed a huge display of power in his heats when he jumped last out of the boxes and used the outside track to storm into second one length behind powerful contender, Poke the Bear.

Michelle Nolan is a nurse by trade and Hightan is her first greyhound to make it to a country cup final; Hightan, the other Cranbourne trained greyhound and only female in the race, is on a career high after five consecutive victories leading to the Cup. Paul Abela is also hoping to find a country cup victory after his greyhound, Huxley, maintained an early lead in his heat despite being chased by start duo Blue Striker and Hasten Slowly. Peter Akathiotis' Blue Striker placed second in the heat; this consistent racer has placed 19 from 20 starts.

In addition to the exciting 520m Cranbourne Cup final, the night will also feature the $10,000 Victoria Cup (699m) and the $5000 Van Echteld (311m).

Throughout the series, points have been allotted for first, second and third place getters and the highest point scorer will be crowned

the Gippsland Champion at the end of the night.

As with the rest of the Gippsland Carnival, the Cranbourne Cup will be a great night of entertainment for the whole family with spectacular racing, live-music from Bosley, free kids' activities, dining and bar options including the Trackside Party Paddock, where you can meet Dane Swan, former Collingwood AFL player.

There is free entry from 5pm and racing kicks off after that.

Chasemore’s Bears were kings of the MCG for a day

By Nick Creely Berwick have become the second Dandenong District Cricket Association club to take out the coveted Cricket Victoria Regional Big Bash, after defeating Sunshine United at the MCG on Tuesday morning.

The Bears join Cranbourne from two years ago to take home the silverware, with Matthew Chasemore's side controlling proceedings from the outset to further cement themselves as one of the most successful Twenty20 sides in local cricket.

Sent in to bat, openers Nathan Pilon (17) fresh off some truly frightening form - and Jordan Cleland (51) got off to a fast start to slam on 55 for the first wicket, before both stars were eventually removed, with the latter doing plenty of damage on the wide expanses of the ground.

But Chasemore got going to once again highlight that he's not lost any of his touch, cracking three sixes on his way to a matchdefining 67 off 35 balls, capping off what has been an extremely consistent tournament with 214 runs at an average of 53.5. A pair of proud Lakers

By Nick Creely Lynbrook Cricket Club pair Odil Perera and Raheel Bostan are undoubtedly talented, but crucially, have the thirst for hard work and dedication, as well as the passion for the game they have grown up loving.

The talented youngsters now get the opportunity to showcase their talents for Victoria Metro Under 15s in the National Championships, starting on 7 February in Brisbane, and will be representing the Lakers, the community and the DDCA as they look to pull on the Victorian colours with pride.

Bostan - a Lynbrook junior also playing Premier Cricket with Dandenong - told Star News Group of the tremendous pride he feels ahead of a big week of cricket.

"It's reward more than anything to be completely honest, it's a reflection of all the tough work that I have done over the past years that have led me to this point," he said.

"I am extremely proud, and hope to do my parents, club and region proud as well."

Describing himself as "versatile" cricketer, a bit of 'nudger' with the bat and a bowler that relishes the middle overs, Bostan has starred for the Lakers' Under 15 side this season, and has also recently cracked into the seconds at Dandenong, where he has shown some tremendous signs that he will be a force into the future.

He is grateful for his home club and the support they've provided him, but pointed out to two key figures who have given him inspiration.

"Lynbrook has been a great help in this long journey - when I arrived here at 14, they did everything they could to make me prepared for the future, often given me helpful tips and not being afraid to challenge me," he said.

"I really look up to Shane Warne and Brett Forsyth - who's our Premier ones bat. Warney

family has been the catalyst for his passion for the game.

"Cricket has always been in our household as my father, Himal, used to play first class cricket in Sri Lanka and my sister, Thenushi, who plays cricket too," he said.

"The passion grew in the backyard where my sister and I would play endless hours of cricket, batting, bowling and eventually hitting the ball to the next door neighbours house."

Perera said he doesn't look up to anyone specifically, and likes to learn from a range of different people.

"I don't really look up to anyone specifically, every cricketer is different and I learn from everyone's different aspects," he said.

"If I had to choose one person, it would be Virat Kohli as one of his uniqueness is his aggression towards the game."

Playing for the Lakers' Under 17 side, Perera only recently joined the club, but loves the community aspect of his new home.

"I joined this club halfway through the season and the club has been inviting giving me the opportunity to be a part of the community," he said.

"The people associated with this team are always striving to give us the best cricketing experience hence I am really thankful for that."

As he too jets off for the experience of a lifetime, Perera had plenty of influences he would like to thank.

"I would like to thank all the coaches and clubs who have played a part in the cricketer I am today," he said.

"I would also like to thank my family and friends, especially my father, who have supported me tirelessly throughout this whole journey so far and continue to do so."

Similar to Odil Perera, a gun Lynbrook junior who is getting some Premier Cricket experience with Casey-South Melbourne, he feels overwhelmed and extremely proud to be representing his state.

"The feeling is overwhelming and I feel extremely proud to represent my state," he said.

"I'm really excited to e spend the next week in Brisbane/Sunshine Coast playing cricket with my teammates and sharing some memorable experiences with them.

"The matches are going to aid in my confidence with my cricket skills, allowing me to put forth my skills against the rest of Australia.

"I'm looking to play with a positive mindset and back my abilities to make some runs on the scoreboard and hopefully being able to contribute to another the win for Vic Metro."

Describing himself as a batting all-rounder, Perera is an accumulator of runs who also bowls leg-spin.

"I am always looking to challenge myself and go test out the limits in the game of cricket," he said of his playing style.

The Melbourne Demons fell agonisingly short of a win in their first game of the 2019 AFLW season, falling to the Fremantle Dockers by four points at Casey Fields on Sunday afternoon.

In blistering heat, the Demons kicked the opening two goals of the game - thanks to Aliesha Newman and Kate Hore - but the Dockers responded with the next three majors to head into the first break with a five-point lead, 3.1 (19) to 2.2 (14).

The Dockers slammed on three goals to one in the second term to boast a 20-point lead at half time, 6.4 (40) to 3.2 (20).

The third term was when the Demons -

kicking with the wind - really got into the game. Co-captain Shelley Scott got the scoreboard ticking over with an early major and kick started a dominant five-goal to zero term to see Melbourne enter the final term with a 14-point lead.

The Dockers kicked with a strong breeze in the final term and took full advantage. Fremantle booted three goals to zero and when Gemma Houghton booted a major with just over five minutes remaining, the Dockers had the lead and held on for a four-point win, 9.5 (59) to 8.7 (55).

Cricket community unites

By Hayley Wildes In the sunshine of Australia Day, the Carlisle Park Cricket Club hosted a special day, one that highlighted what can be achieved when the local community comes together as one for a great cause.

In the third edition of the '42 Ball Bash', 10 teams competed for glory, but more importantly, they came together to raise funds for the '42For42' not-for-profit organisation.

42For42 aims to help struggling veterans and their families by building a memorial dedicated to those who have paid the ultimate sacrifice.

42For42 signifies the 41 soldiers killed in Afghanistan and the 42nd is to represent the soldiers lost and continue to lose to suicide, as well as those who have returned with injuries and mental illness.

The third edition of the event was the biggest yet and in an amazing effort by all, $14362 was raised. That takes the total over the three years to over $30000.

Mike McKenna, West Gippsland Cricket Association Vice President, talked about the day and how the community spirit shone bright in a fun afternoon for all ages.

"It was just a massive day and we had about 500-600 people roll through over the course of the day," McKenna said.

"There were kids everywhere, both boys and girls playing, and it was just an absolutely fun day. There were teams that had parents playing with their kids and it was a really family-centric day.

"As well as that, it really got back to the reason that we were there; for 42For42 and to raise funds for a memorial."

"You had 42 balls from one end, go out and have a hit and field and then when it got down to the business end, it happened to be Kooweerup and Cranbourne Cricket Clubs playing off in the final," McKenna said.

the event and McKenna saw the positive effect such a day had on them.

"There were some times during the day when I sat with returned soldiers and it was quite emotional to hear their stories of how they've lost their friends through suicide and what this sort of a day does for them," he said.

"It was just a great day, it was an absolutely wonderful day for the community and to raise that kind of money is just phenomenal."

Cranbourne, Narre suffer defeats

By Hayley Wildes CRANBOURNE BOWLS In Division 2, playing on a slick green at Berwick, it was a challenge for both sides and Cranbourne started well but Berwick pegged them back and the result was an exciting finish that went down to the very last end.

However, it was better news for the next three Cranbourne sides all recording good wins. Not such good news in Division 1 midweek ladies, where Cranbourne was outplayed by a strong Edithvale side. During the week, Cranbourne was saddened by the loss of one of its highly-regarded and esteemed club member in Lindsay Coate who will be deeply missed by all.

Side 1 - Division 2 Club Chief, John McKenna paid tribute to Lindsay Coate before the start of the game and then Cranbourne played as though they had an extra player on their side, racing away to a 17-shot lead by the tea break. Unfortunately, the extreme heat seemed to take a toll on some of its players and with Berwick coming back hard it was always going to be a tough finish.

Skip Frank Byrne had his rink of John McKenna and Shane Morrison in great form all day and with the last end to be played in the match, Frank had an opportunity to draw the match but it was not to be and Berwick ended up winning by three shots. Frank and his crew were the best rink on the day, finishing seven shots up.

Cranbourne 66 (4 points) lost to Berwick 69.

Side 2 - Division 3 Cranbourne recorded a great 12-shot win against Pakenham, thanks to Skip Steve Hickson and his crew of Bill Bradbury, Brian Biasci and Stan Myers who won by the same margin.

Asked after the game who was the best player on the day, they all replied that they all played well.

Cranbourne 84 (16 points) defeated Pakenham 72.

Side 3 - Division 5 Skip Ron Shields was in excellent form, thanks to his team of Barry Graham, Karen Hickson and Brian Legg, winning by seven shots. Ladies Division 1 The last three games were played in very hot conditions which has certainly been a factor in making it difficult for the ladies side to perform at their best. With all three rinks losing against Edithvale, Cranbourne now have to regain their mojo quickly against Montmorency, who they play at home this week to stay in touch of finishing the season in the top two.

Cranbourne Ladies 44 (0 points) lost to Edithvale 77.

The mid-week bowls results were: Cranbourne 2 Division 2 open 72 (14 points) defeated Hampton Park 45.

Cranbourne 3 Division 3 open 68 (14 points) defeated Churchill Waverley 44.

Cranbourne 4 six-a-side open 32 (2 points) lost to Narre Warren 39.

NARRE WARREN It was another mixed and disappointing day for Narre Warren mid-week bowlers, with two losses and a win; all by less than 10 shots each.

Division 2 played at Cardinia Waters for an eight-shot loss. Keith Mark, Wilma Haringsma, Colin Groom and Zak Storm had a good 3012 win, while Reg Young, Judy Naughton, Arthur Scheurer and Wilma Stevenson just went down, 26-21. Wally Finlayson, Iain Stevenson, Rod Lane and Jim Millar had a bad day, going down 30-9.

Narre Warren (1) 2-60 lost to Cardinia Waters (1) 14-68.

Division 3 were at home, but suffered a loss against Mulgrave. Stan Bulmer, Gary Wilson, Alan Mark and Geoff Ampt won 18-13, while

Arthur Fitt, Janice Moran, Enid Gibb and Philip Howard (22-20) and Les Clement, Pauline Kempf, Joe McGuire and Peter Groom (23-14) both lost.

Narre Warren (2) 2-52 lost to Mulgrave (4) 14-58.

The six-a-side team were also at home, taking on Cranbourne and had another win. Jacqueline Moody, Brian Fraser and Andy Tobler won well (26-15), while Susan Hawkins, Jeanette Cox and Glen Cadman just fell, 17-13.

Narre Warren (3) 2-39 defeated Cranbourne (4) 2-32.

Saturday pennant saw only one of the four teams win. At Burden Park, Division 3 had a loss. Erik Luyters, Colin Groom, Arthur Scheurer and Jim Millar just went down 19-18, while Joe Selfridge, Reg Young, Rod Lane and Cam Lee (23-19), Eric Sdenham, Zade Bulmer, Iain Stevenson and Wilma Stevenson (20-14) and John Wright, Tracey Storm, Percy Herath and Zak Storm (20-14) all lost.

Narre Warren (1) 0-65 lost to Burden Park (2) 18-82.

Division 4 had a tight five-shot win. The heroes for the day were the team of Keith Mark, Alan Mark, Jim Kempf and Norm Hosmer who won 35-18. The other three rinks had small losses; Peter Groom, Graham Dodd, Stan Robinson and Carl Lapham (19-18), Wally Finlayson, David Wilkinson, Geoff Miller and Ralph Devonshire (18-16) and Wilma Haringsma, Ernesto Vergara, Philip Howard and John Zanon (19-10).

Narre Warren (2) 12-79 defeated Cardinia Waters (1) 6-74.

Division 5 suffered a loss to Edithvale at home. Arthur Fitt, Pauline Kempf, Paul McNamara and Peter Lister won 20-19, and Stan Bulmer, Darren Moore, John Uren and Geoff Ampt survived for a 17-16 win. Stan Birkett, Peter Castricum, Wayne Grimsey and John Green just went down 12-15, but Leo McGeary, Joe McGuire, Sharon Bull and Brent Grigg failed to fire after the break and lost 30-17.

Narre Warren (3) 4-71 lost to Edithvale (4) 14-86.

Division 7 travelled to Cardinia Waters, and although they were players short of a full team, had to give a forfeit when some players suffered with the heat.

Look out for sporty Eclipse

By Alistair Kennedy The past 12 months have been very successful for Mitsubishi with the Japanese importer moving up to fourth place in overall Australian vehicle sales behind Toyota, Mazda and Hyundai.

With sales of just over 7500 units during 2018 much of that success can be attributed to the most recent addition to the range, the Eclipse Cross which was launched at the end of 2017.

Eclipse Cross is the fifth member of the Mitsubishi SUV family. It snuggles into the space between the compact ASX and the mediumlarge Outlander (all three sit on what is effectively the same platform), with the Pajero Sport and the large Pajero at the top of the tree.

Between them these SUVs accounted for 61.4 per cent of total Mitsubishi sales in 2018.

The popular Triton pickup was the biggest seller for the year with 29.2% leaving the traditional passenger cars Lancer and Mirage with a mere 9.5%.

Eclipse Cross was launched in December 2017 with three variants, LS 2WD, Exceed 2WD and Exceed AWD. A new entry level ES 2WD was added in September 2018 allowing the starting price to squeeze just under the psychological $30,000 level.

Eclipse Cross has the attractive coupe-like roofline that’s currently in vogue and gives the wagon an attractive and stylish profile. At the front there’s a big and bold version of the Mitsubishi Dynamic Shield grille that’s framed by twin LED headlamps, daytime running lights and recessed foglamps and turn indicators.

The rear windscreen is split by a distinctive horizontal bar.

All models get 18-inch alloy wheels and front foglamps. The flagship Exceed models

Mitsubishi Eclipse Cross SUV has head-turning looks. add auto-levelling LED headlights and dual panoramic sunroofs although only the front section can be opened.

The interior of the Eclipse Cross has a neat and functional design with most features easily accessible. The instrument panel has carbon and piano black accents as do the steering wheel, centre console and door panels. The lower dash, centre console, arm rests and air vents all have a high finish silver trim.

Eclipse Cross only comes as a five-seater. If you need a third row then look to the Mitsubishi Outlander. Clever design provides the feel of a larger vehicle with plenty of head, leg and elbowroom in the front. The seats are wide and comfortable enough for long-distance driving,

if you want power adjustment you’ll need to step up to the Exceed models.

The steering wheel can be adjusted for both height and reach.

There’s plenty of space in the rear seats with the added convenience of eight-step sliding and reclining adjustments. They can be moved up to 200 mm to adjust between rear legroom and boot space. Taller occupants will appreciate the tilt feature of the rear seats. Sadly, there are no air vents in the rear seats.

The boot can cater for between 341 and 448 litres with the rear 60:40 seatbacks in place and up to 1122 litres when they’re folded.
