Road needs work

By Kath Gannaway A windy section of the HealesvilleKooweerup Road where two people died and three others were injured on Sunday, 9 April, needs urgent surface works according to police.

Witnesses to the crash, locals who rushed to help, and emergency services personnel from around the Valley faced an horrific scene.

The vehicle ran off the road on a sweeping bend in the wet, rolled and crashed into a tree at around 2.30pm.

Leading Senior Constable Scott Lardner from Yarra Ranges Highway Patrol who attended the crash, has rec-

ommended to VicRoads that the speed on the stretch of the most notorious of several bends be lowered from 80km/h to 70km/h, but said it needed more than that.

He was contacted by VicRoads following the crash.

“They asked me for an opinion and I’ve said what we don’t need is a kneejerk reaction that lowers the speed and that’s the end of it,” he said.

“It’s not about speed all the time and real action needs to be taken on the road surface.

“It’s a bad piece of road.“ According to VicRoads 3300 ve-

hicles a day use the road, which was resurfaced in 2013, with minor patching carried out in the past month.

VicRoads data showed four crashes resulting in two serious injuries on the section between Dalry and Syme roads in the five years to 31 December, 2016, however that figure may be much higher according to people who regularly drive the road and live nearby.

Healesville SES Controller Geoff Stott whose team were involved intensively as the rescue operation played out, said their unit has been called out a couple of times very recently to that section of road.

“It’s a bad corner,” he said.

A local man who works regularly on the farm property adjacent to the crash scene estimated there was a crash or run-off on the corners every three weeks.

“Every time it rains, you can see where someone has gone off,” he told the Mail.

He said most times the people were lucky and ended up just being towed out of what could have been another tragedy.

The presumption is that these nearmisses don’t make it to VicRoads’ database.

“People just come too fast and lose it on the corner,” he said, pointing out a scarred tree just metres from the devastation of Sunday’s fatality.

“That one got knocked down two weeks ago,” he said.

Just before Christmas, he said he went to the aid of an Upper Yarra woman travelling with three children who also had a lucky escape.

“She ran off on the other bend and it was just sheer luck that she missed the trees,” he said.

“It’s a particularly bad corner.”

Soccer provides a connection. 166953 ban environment they call home with the wider world, in this case youth from around Toolangi, Kinglake and Healesville.

Soccer on the Hill recognises that young people in smaller communities are isolated in their experience of other cultures and lack the opportunities to meet their peers from different backgrounds, but that in many ways they share the same interests and challenges.

Soccer and food are a great example.

Members of Healesville Soccer Club have been invited to kick the round ball around, and run some clinics on the day.

Tamsin Reed from the club said they are looking forward to the day.

“We have a lot of people from different backgrounds in the club but still in Healesville there is not so much di-

versity, so it’s a great opportunity for our kids.”

A $1488 grant from Murrindindi Council has helped push things along and Raenor said they are looking forward to providing an opportunity for better understanding, and fun.

Activities will start around 11.30am with skills training and bubble soccer followed by an Halal picnic lunch - food and drinks provided - from 1.30pm to 2.30pm.

“We are hoping it brings people together and sparks some thought among others about how they might engage more with other cultures for cultural understanding,” Raenor said.

Murrindindi Shire’s fire amnesty period is keeping on

By Kath Gannaway Murrindindi Shire’s Fire Danger Period remained in force throughout Easter, finishing on 18 April, 2017.

The Council has put out a reminder that while nearby shires have already removed fire restrictions, Murrindindi towns, including Marysville, Toolangi, Kinglake, Buxton and Narbethong, remain in the fire danger period.

However, the Council is allowing a fire amnesty period, from 22 April to

6 May, 2017, and offering free green waste disposal at their recycling and recovery centres.

Mayor Charlie Bisset encouraged residents to make good use of the free alternative.

“This option has been really popular with our Shire’s residents, as they can get rid of their grass clippings, leaves, garden prunings, branches and tree trunks no bigger than 300mm in diameter and no longer than 1.5m,” she said.

Cr Bisset said while the fire amnesty period allows residents in townships to carry out small open-air burns, there are important regulations around them.

She warned against nuisance fires that can be caused by too much smoke or the illegal burning of materials such as furniture or mattresses.

“If these fires are reported, our Local Laws officers will attend and penalty notices may be issued,” Cr Bisset said.

From 6 May 2017, a permit will be required to burn off in a residential area.

In a Farming Zone (generally areas outside town limits), a permit is not required between 18 April and the start of Council Fire Restrictions on 15 October 2017.

Forest Fire Management Victoria will be conducting a 40 hectare fuel reduction burn at Mt Little Joe and a 149 hectare fuel reduction burn at Mt Toolebewong early next week.

Smoke may be visible in and around the Yarra Junction and Healesville areas.

Regional Manager Fire and Emergency Preparedness, Bernard Barbetti, said: “These planned burns are important to help reduce the risk of bushfire to the Warburton, Don Valley, Launching Place, Yarra Junction, Millgrove and Wesburn communities.

Smoke from the Mt Little Joe burn may be visible to residents living in and around Warburton, Millgrove, Wesburn and surrounding areas and may also be visible from the Warburton Highway.

Forest Fire Management Victoria warns that if you encounter smoke over the road: ‘slow down, turn on your headlights and obey all road signs.’

Smoke will also be present around Mt Toolebewong, Don Valley, Woori Yallock and surrounding areas from the Mt Toolebewong burn and the smoke may linger over the following days in both areas.

These burns come weeks after the state saw over 100 planned burns take place throughout Victoria which resulted in smoke blanketing Melbourne and the Yarra Valley.

Mr Barbetti said that the burns are vital in reducing fuel which in turn helps reduce the risk of bushfire to people, property and communities.

“These burns are vital for fuel reduction and will be carried out by experienced Forest Fire Management Victoria crews using local knowledge of forest fuels, topography and weather conditions.

“Less bushfire fuel means fires are less intense and slows them down making it easier for firefighters to control them before they threaten lives and assets,” “Community engagement staff will be on site at both burns to answer any questions from the public,” Mr Barbetti said.

“It is vital that we take every opportunity to complete these burns whenever conditions are suitable and it is safe to do so.”

The burns at both Mt Little Joe and Mt Toolebewong will take place early next week before Thursday providing the weather remains suitable.

Food and soccer will come together at Toolangi on Anzac Day to provide a unique multicultural experience for local and inner city youth.

Soccer on the Hill is a project of the Toolangi-Castella Community House that will bring young migrants and their families up the mountain for a multicultural picnic, community soccer and other games and activities.

Raenor Priest of TCCH said the idea was sparked at a lecture she attended at which refugee advocate Julian Burnside, a Ugandan refugee, and a teacher who had worked on Manus Island were guest speakers.

When Raenor asked Mr Burnside what a small community such as Toolangi could do to help people’s understanding of refugees, the answer was simple - breaking bread together.

“I thought Toolangi was a bit far for a dinner, but why not a multicultural picnic,” Raenor said.

Toolangi has the perfect venue, Teamsters Hill, the former home of the late Alec Sewell, who bequeathed the property, complete with a sports ground, to benefit young people.

Fallen remembered

By Kath Gannaway The year 1917 ended much as it had begun for Australians fighting on the Western Front - with our Diggers bogged in the muddy trenches of France and Belgium.

It was a year of suffering and grief for a whole generation in which 76,836 Australians became casualties in battles such Bullecourt, Messines, and the fourmonth campaign around Ypres known as the battle of Passchendaele.

Among the tens of thousands of British and Empire troops who remain missing in France and Belgium, some lie in nameless graves, others have never been found.

On Anzac Day, Tuesday, 25 April, thousands of community members will remember them as the sun rises and in commemorative marches around the Yarra Valley.

Healesville RSL’s dawn service is at 5.45am at the RSL, followed by a 10am commemorative march from Church Street to the Memorial Hall, assembling at 9.30am.

Lest We Forget. 167252 Marysville RSL will conduct a commemorative march from the Lyell-Murchison roundabout at 10.30am to the cenotaph for a service at 11am.

The Millgrove Residents Action

Group will hold a 6am dawn service in the town park.

Mt Evelyn RSL will hold a dawn service from 5.45am at the War Memorial Park, followed by a Commemorative

March to the clubrooms on Birmingham Road.

A dawn service will be run by Lilydale RSL at the cenotaph in the Ralph Goode Reserve in the main street from 5.45am.

Upper Yarra RSL will hold a dawn service at 5.45am at the Yarra Junction Cenotaph, followed by a breakfast at the RSL. A commemorative march will start at 10am from Little Yarra Road down the main street to the cenotaph.

Wandin Rotary Club’s commemorative service will be held at 8.30am at the Wandin cenotaph on the corner of Hunter and Beenak roads.

Warburton RSL will hold a commemorative march from the RSL at 10am, followed by a 10.40am service at the Main Street cenotaph.

In Yarra Glen, the RSL will hold a commemorative march from the police station in King Street from 10am, followed by a 10.30am service at the Memorial Hall.

Wines tested for smoke after-taste

By Derek Schlennstedt As smoke descended onto the Yarra Valley last week, wine growers hastily harvested their vines to protect them from the damage that smoke can cause.

Grapes that are exposed to smoke can result in wines with undesirable sensory characters, such as smoky, burnt, ashy or medicinal, taste.

For many wineries they are unsure how the smoke will affect the grapes remaining on the vines but Richard Howden, CEO of the Yarra Valley Wine Growers Association, said it was un-

likely that vineyards in the area would be affected.

“We don’t believe there are any issues of smoke taint, but we won’t know conclusively until a few weeks,” Mr Howden said.

“There was some smoke around for a few days and that’s always concerning, but we monitor it very closely and work with the department of Environment and Water to minimise the impact.”

The Department of Environment, Land, Water and Planning (DELWP) organised up to 100 planned burns in for-

ests and parks from 3 April until 9 April, and more are still to come.

Franco D’Anna owner of Hoddles Creek Estate and vice-president of the Yarra Valley Wine Growers Association is working closely with DELWP in researching the impact of smoke on his harvest.

“We’re doing a smoke trial here with the State Government and DELWP.” “We can measure smoke taint, there was a lot of smoke around but it’s hard to know the impact because you have to determine the intensity of the burn and

the type of smoke,” he said.

DELWP, which manages a majority of the burn-offs, states that they do a lot of consultation with individual wine growers and wine growing associations about minimising the impact the smoke has on the grapes.

“Forest Fire Management Victoria is committed to balancing the concerns of vignerons in the Yarra Valley with the need to complete planned burning to reduce bushfire risk to people and property in the area,” DELWP Yarra district manager Nigel Brennan said.

The carnage of a road crash is physically and emotionally confronting.

He said a number of people were given leaflets pointing them to road trauma support services.

“We had a man in his seventies, just trying to enjoy retirement ... he stayed an hour with a poor girl in the back and he now has visions of that,” LSC Lardner said.

Mr Stott said for some of his older volunteers the scene had brought back memories of a crash on a bad bend on

the Black Spur several years ago in which two local paramedics died.

“Two deceased and a tree hit in exactly the same way ... that vision just came straight back,” he said.

“No road crash is good, but it seems particularly hard when you have younger people involved.”

Hillcrest CFA Captain Fiona Burns last week praised two local men who gave assistance until emergency services arrived.

“I commend them for what they did under such very trying circumstances,” she said.

LSC Lardner said while investigations are continuing into the circumstances of the Sunday 9 fatality, witness statements indicate that the vehicle was travelling under the speed limit.

Motorbike and car collide Eltham police are appealing for witnesses following a collision between a ute and a motorcycle in Kangaroo Ground on Tuesday 4 April.

The collision occurred between 3pm and 3.15pm on Kangaroo Ground-Wattle Glen Road.

A 27-year-old Dixons Creek man has been charged with reckless conduct endangering serious injury and has been bailed to appear at Heidelberg Magistrates’ Court on 31 October.

A 51-year-old Sunbury man suffered serious injuries as a result of the collision.

Investigators are keen to speak to anyone who may have witnessed the collision.

Chemist burglary The Warburton Pharmacy, located in the main street, was burgled about 9.50pm on Friday 14 April.

Police said the offenders forced entry into the pharmacy and it was alleged they had taken some medication and a generator.

Warburton police Sergeant Tom Wilkinson urged anyone who may have seen a suspicious vehicle or suspicious activity at the time near the pharmacy to contact the Warburton police.

Erratic driving On Sunday 16 April a four-wheel drive was reported to Warburton police after it had been seen driving erratically between Yarra Glen and Woori Yallock.

The vehicle was alleged to have been seen passing on the wrong side of the road, into the path of oncoming traffic.

Warburton police report that the 4WD would have been travelling southbound along Healesville-Kooweerup road between 9.30pm and 10pm on Sunday night.

Locked-up attitudes

Why did 35 or so people from Healesville and Warburton areas spend a rainy Sunday afternoon attending the Palm Sunday March (Melbourne, April 6)?

Some of the reasons: * Refugees are our fellow human beings; * Australia’s current overall refugee intake is small compared to that of previous decades; * No plan seems to exist for the future of men and families on Manus and Nauru; * The $500,000 annual cost of each individual in offshore detention is an inappropriate use of taxpayer dollars; * In protest at the indefinite detention and unjust treatment of people with recognised refugee status.

We all look forward to a change of government, heart and action.

I can’t help wondering about this new ‘juvenile facility’ the government is building in Werribee - is it a jail?

Or is it a juvenile detention centre? Or are they the same thing? What do the politicians think it is? What do the jailors think it is? What do the juveniles think it is? What do we think it is?

And - above all else - what function does it actually serve?

The kids have been convicted of ‘crimes’, so we assume they are criminals.

Ergo, they must be punished. Therefore it must be a jail - whatever we call it.

But, are they really criminals? Might it not be more realistic to assume they might just be ‘criminals-in-the making’?

In which case is our current mode of punishment more likely (or not) to accelerate their progress along this path?

Perhaps crime and punishment do not neces-

sarily go together like a horse and carriage.

Perhaps our pollies are just too scared to think of new approaches because there is such widespread public fear around this issue?

And how did we get to be so scared by some seemingly out-of-control adolescents?

Perhaps that teacher guy at Parkville, who seemed to have been pushed aside when he didn’t achieve instant results, should have had much greater support from the appropriate authorities?

After all, he was attempting to turn around whole centuries of ignorance and complacency.

It’s not just the buildings - it’s the attitudes.

I’d say ditch the dyed-in-the-wool jailors and re-train the managers, or start again with an entirely new approach to the whole sorry business.

I am appalled that the current government seems to be passing up an opportunity to bring much-needed change to the whole problem.

Just building a new jail is insane.

End of days We are told that we should change the date of our Australia Day celebrations because it is insensitive to the feelings of our Indigenous brothers and sisters.

The push is being generated by the do-gooders and those with a left leaning.

In short, all the usual suspects.

Anzac Day will be in their sights next.

If it is that the powers that be are successfully coerced into changing history and the date of Australia Day, I’m quite fond of the 8 May idea.

It displays the Aussie sense of humour and our ability not to take ourselves too seriously.

26 January will always be arrival day, foundation day and the day that changed Australia forever.

Those who live in the St Leonard’s Road area of Healesville and have recently lost shoes should read on! Several weeks ago a local resident lost her gardening shoes overnight. Marchers are out for justice

By Derek Schlennstedt Tens of thousands of people took part in the Palm Sunday refugee rallies, held across the country on Sunday 9 April.

Of those thousands, some 35 Healesville and Warburton residents marched in solidarity to protest the indefinite detention and unjust treatment of refugees by the Australian Government.

The Healesville Rural Australians for Refugees (RAR) and Warburton RAR group attended Melbourne’s rally on Sunday 9 April at the State Library where they joined the march around the city.

The Palm Sunday Walk was a success and in spite of adverse weather conditions that hampered efforts it was estimated that around 4000 to 5000 people attended the protest.

Ellen Rowatt, a member of the Warburton RAR group and refugee advocate, said the event attracted a fantastic audience of passionate people who were all marching and protesting for the government to shut down the Manus and Nauru detention centres.

“There was a huge turnout, and everyone was so passionate,” she said.

“The government is violating the rights of these people on Manus and Nauru ... these people have been forced onto a boat to escape a terrible situation and the government punishes them for doing that.

“Australia has closed the door on these people,” she said.

Although detention on Manus Island was declared illegal by a PNG court in April 2016, people are still held held there and refugees remain trapped on both Manus Island and Nauru despite having committed no crime.

The event invited various speakers to share their experiences and concerns about the future of the refugees held on Manus and Nauru including Idil Ali from the RISE (Refugees, Survivors and Ex-detainees) who spoke on the need to include refugees in decision making.

“The only time where my community is invited to speak about ourself is when you want to hear stories of our suffering and hardship, never for solutions, why is that? We are experts of our narratives,” she said when speaking at the event.

“People out there who are remaining silent but are horrified by the government's treatment of refugees need to speak out, small voices can be heard and make a big difference and can have the power to affect decisions made by government.

The Monbulk state electorate was part of a targeted campaign that saw three marginal Labor seats in Victoria receive over 150,000 robocalls.

In a new campaign to keep the Heyfield timber mill open, voters in the electorates of Monbulk, Mordialloc, and Narre Warren received unsolicited robocalls from the CFMEU on Monday night, 10 April.

The phone calls urged residents to contact their local member and to ask them to help support the Heyfield timber mill.

Deputy Premier and Monbulk MP James Merlino was one of the three targeted by the CFMEU robocalls which told voters that the Victorian Government could save the mill by increasing its allocation of timber and that local MP James Merlino had ‘done nothing’ to help save the mill.

The robocalls, presented listeners with a pre-recorded message from a worker at the Heyfield mill who was asking residents to contact their local member, to help save his job and town.

“Our mill needs more timber supply and only the Victorian Government can fix the problem.

“So far, James Merlino, your local member has done nothing, and I mean nothing. Like so many politicians, he’s big on words and nowhere to be found when we need him.

“Please help me save my job and our town,” states the prerecorded audio message.

Of the 150,000 calls it is alleged that around 50,000 were made to the Monbulk electorate.

Last month Australian Sustainable Hardwoods said it had to shut the mill down after the most recent timber allocation from Vic forests of 200,000 cubic metres over three years was deemed too low for operation.

A spokesperson for CFMEU said that the people working at Heyfield were currently in limbo and did not know what their future held, and the campaign acted to help put pressure on the government to make a decision.

“People around Heyfield are hurting due to uncertainty around their future and their lives.”

“The purpose has been to get local voters to put pressure on MPs and the government.”

Only marginal seats were targeted with Deputy Premier James Merlino holding the Monbulk seat by five per cent.

A spokesperson for CFMEU said that issues were more likely to be raised and heard in marginal seats.

“The intention is to ensure the government hears the message, and in marginal seats the issues are more in focus and likely to be heard.”

“There’s been enough discussion and now it’s time for the government to make a decision.”

To keep the mill open would require a sustainable source of timber and suggestions have been made by the CFMEU to reduce the buffer around the lead beaters possum which would reportedly release around 10,000ha of commercial forest for logging.

A statement attributable to a spokesperson for Agriculture Minister Jaala Pulford stated that the government would continue to explore options to sell the mill.

“The government believes that the Heyfield mill has a future and is continuing to engage with ASH and worker representatives to facilitate the sale of the mill to a new operator to save local jobs,” the spokesman said.

21st century memorial plan

By Peter Douglas The designs for the anticipated Seville War Memorial were unfurled to a respectful crowd within the township on Tuesday 11 April.

The public and descendants of local Anzacs joined community leaders for the launch.

In what has been billed as a “war memorial for the 21st century”, the designs didn’t disappoint.

The memorial, which will be built near the Seville Water Play Park, will comprise four glass panels that will stand an imposing 4m high.

Each panel seeks to pay tribute to the town’s war history.

Among those to feature on the panels will be hometown hero Captain George Ingram VC MM, who is the Yarra Valley’s only Victoria Cross recipient.

Other individuals to feature at the memorial will be Trooper George Cassidy.

Yarra Ranges councillor Tony Stevenson said Trooper Cassidy’s story was one that needed to be kept alive.

“Trooper Cassidy was 18 when he enlisted from Seville in the Australian Lighthorse in 1917,” Cr Stevenson said.

“He was sent to the Middle East as reinforcement for the 4th Australian Lighthorse Regiment, who were the famous Chargers of Beersheba.

“He was with them through all their battles in Palestine and Jordan, before he returned to Seville where he lived the rest of his life.”

The designs seek to bring to life the wider picture of the town’s war history.

Thus, they will include Seville’s Roll of Honour, with a list of those who were born or resided in Seville before they died during active service.

From World War I, 15 names feature on that roll.

On another panel, there will be an image of a ‘Welcome Home’ function in the Seville Public Hall after World War I, which will display a poem that was written for Captain Ingram’s return.

Among those to praise the designs were Evelyn MP Christine Fyffe and Federal Casey MP Tony Smith, who both acknowledged the workmanship and dedication from those involved.

SMAQ Design Collaborations has been entrusted with the task of bringing to life the memorial, with local historian Anthony McAleer praising their efforts.

“They’ve taken the concept of the traditional cenotaph memorial and modernised it,” he said.

“This memorial won’t just be a list of names in stone.

“It will pay tribute to those from Seville - who served, suffered and died for our nation - by giving detail through words and images, by telling their stories in a heartfelt and emotive way.”

Mr McAleer said it will be not just a memorial, but a public work of art in its own right.

Busy bees are all the buzz

That’s just one of the questions the judges will be asking, perhaps not in quite so familiar terms, when they look over the sweet offerings at the Lilydale Agricultural Show in November.

Greg Huggins of the Yarra Valley Bee Group, which organises the honey section at the show, is urging apiarists to start getting their entries ready now.

Entries can include honey, a frame of capped wax and, this year for the first time, a honey-based meade.

Judges will be looking for a range of attributes from clarity and uniformity of colour to density, flavour and aroma.

Greg said keeping bees is becoming increasing popular with their club, based at ECOSS in Wesburn, currently at 150 members and growing.

He has been keeping bees for three seasons now and said with bees having a hard time right now, every bit helps.

“The reasons for the growing numbers are varied,” he said.

“Some are environmental because of the world-wide plight of bees, some keep bees to pollenate their gardens, and their neighbours. Others want to get their own honey.”

The role of the Yarra Valley Bee Group is to promote bee-keeping and all its benefits.

Yarra Ranges Council has said the change of venues come as some meetings are due to be held at various locations around the shire in the coming months including at Warburton, Healesville, Upwey and Montrose.

The council meeting will be held on 26 April at 7pm and agenda items will include the council’s Civic Centre Redevelopment consultation and ALDI Healesville.

Residents can find out more through the Yarra Ranges Local, the council digital newsletter and the council website.

Those interested can access agendas up to six days before the meeting by clicking on About Council on the website yarraranges.vic.gov.au.

Art comes out of its box

By Kath Gannaway “Paper is ...”, an exhibition of works by members of Papermakers of Victoria, is on show at Mont De Lancy throughout April.

The 49 works in the Valda Quick Paper Arts Exhibition range from the collection of ‘black box’ challenges in which the artists tell a story in a box, to framed pieces, wall-hangings and sculptural pieces.

Wandin paper artist Jenny Mockett looked over the exhibition last week and said visitors will be astounded at the quality, the ingenuity of the artists and the scope of what can be created with paper as the primary medium.

“It’s a craft, knowing how to make paper, but paper-making is very much an art-form and this is an exhibition of paper art,” she said.

The exhibition provides a window into the vast range of materials that can be used to create different effects, including

vegetable and plant matter, and the creativity and imagination of the artists.

Among the works are pieces made from ginger lily paper chasmanthe pulp, agapanthus fibre and flax.

The range of colours using natural dyes is also astounding, particularly when used to create floral collages.

The group runs regular courses and demonstrations at the Mont De Lancey market and at The Stables Studio in Bundoora North.

Among several workshops coming up are mixed media collage on 29 April and Introduction to Papermaking on 6 May. For more information on Papermakers of Victoria visit the exhibition on until 30 April or go to www.papermakers.org.au.

Ambition drives Northern Folk

Impressions of expressions Twenty-six photographers from all walks of life share their skill and passion for the art in Expressions at the Upper Yarra Arts Centre.

The annual exhibition presents a stimulating and diverse array of contemporary Australian photography by members of the Yarra Ranges Photographic Society (YRPS), some of whom have had recent success in national and international exhibitions.

Exhibition co-ordinator Rob Wagner said the collection represents favourite works of the photographers.

“You won’t find just one particular theme represented in Expressions,” Mr Wagner said.

“A wide variety of themes explored by society members make up the exhibition, including portraiture, landscape, flora and fauna, and monochrome, as well as creatively enhanced images, and much more.”

The Yarra Valley Musicians’ Collective has lined up two dynamic bands for an intimate gig at the Badger Creek Hall on Friday 21 April.

It’s a musical double that will ease the longing for fans of the Collective’s main event, the Healesville Music Festival held in November each year.

Directed by Rachel Perkins and based on Craig Silvey’s novel, Jasper Jones is a poignant, moving drama.

When local girl Laura Wishart goes missing in rural 1969 Western Australia, and young Charlie Bucktin (Levi Miller) and his ostracised half-Aborigine friend Jasper Jones (Aaron L. McGrath) find her murdered in the woods, the two of them resolve to catch her murderer.

While Jasper Jones’s pac-

ing may feel rather slow and languid for what is ostensibly a murder mystery, this relaxed flow actually works to the film’s advantage.

We feel like we’re watching a life unfold, rather than a series of events, and the tension is generated by the heavy burden of Charlie and Jasper’s secret and the sometimes turbulent interactions of the townsfolk.

The performances from Miller, McGrath and major rising star Angourie Rice are remarkably mature and confident.

While the film delivers some levity in the form of

awkward adolescent affection and Charlie chafing under well-meaning parental discipline, Jasper Jones also unflinchingly addresses the prejudice that was so prevalent in outback communities during the mid-twentieth century.

The film’s narrative also has some well-handled, hardhittings twists, including one reminiscent of Boo Radley in Harper Lee’s To Kill A Mockingbird.

Superbly acted, touching and insightful, Jasper Jones is another great entry in a recent renaissance in Australian filmmaking.

Veterans can be Villains

By Kath Gannaway To be honest ... “I’m the bald guy with two shoulder straps” doesn’t narrow it down a lot when you’re looking at a photo of the Marysville Villains Veterans footy team.

Or, any other of the six Yarra Ranges veterans teams that kicked off the season on Saturday, 8 April.

Marysville went down by 100 points to the Bloods in a match that saw Healesville field a veterans’ team for the first time in 16 years.

The Villains rose from the ashes of the Black Saturday bushfires and remain the town’s only football team.

It’s hardly a level playing field and they did it tough with injuries including a knee, shoulder, broken rib and fractured collarbone.

Healesville has only once been out of first division and has a pool of former players to draw on, some barely out of the league record books.

The Villains’ recruiting area includes Alexandra, Thornton and of course Marysville, with a lot of their players coming into competition football for the first time as veterans.

Why do they do it?

Healesville playing coach Dean de Munk didn’t have to think too hard.

“Basically, you’re satisfying an addiction to football,” he said.

Is it sensible?

He hesitated a bit on that one. The average age of players is around 40.

“Probably not. You pull up just as sore as senior footy, but you get two weeks to recover and by the time two weeks comes around ... is it sensible?

That’s a good question.”

Marysville playing coach Brodie Arnott is third youngest in his team at 38.

“The rest are old boys,” he says.

His ‘why’ is pretty much the same.

“I just love the game,” he said. “I’ll play for as long as I can.”

Keeping fit, doing a few laps and playing with mates you grew up with are all drivers for veterans footy, and for the Bloods, it’s also about supporting the senior football off the field.

Arnott says he tries to keep it fun for his boys.

“We don’t have the senior teams and don’t have the winning cultures of clubs that come from that,” he said.

“I still rev them up at half time ... ‘play to win’ and all that, but we’re not too disappointed when we get flogged every week.

“They’re a good bunch of mates.”

Both clubs are looking strong in terms of numbers.

Healesville’s into the high twenties at training and it’s the first time in four years that Marysville has had a full team on the ground ... with players to spare.

The Villains will be living up to their moto “Never Give In”, when they meet the Bloods again at Marysville’s Trevor Harrow Oval towards the end of the year.

And praying for rain.

Arnott said the season starter was called off six minutes into the last quarter when lightening started getting bad.

“I would have been happy to keep playing,” he said. “The rain slows them down a bit.”

Roads risky

By Derek Schlennstedt There is a risk element in any road travel, but, arguably, the most vulnerable on our roads are motorcycle riders.

Motorcyclists have been over-represented in serious and fatal crashes over many years.

To reduce these statistics, the Victorian Government is boosting motorcyclist safety along 11 high-risk roads in regional Victoria, as part of a package of road safety improvements.

Of the roads included, the Healesville-Kinglake and Healesville-Toolangi roads will be among those to receive upgrades. As part of The Motorcycle Safety Levy, the work includes the installation of new rub-rail protective barriers, sealing driveways and roads, better surfaces, signage and roadside improvements to create a safer and more rider friendly environment.

The $10.75 million investment is part of a targeted approach to reduce the number of motorcycle fatalities on Victorian roads by improving the road conditions of 11 popular roads taken by motorcyclists, three of which have been completed.

The remaining eight, including Healesville-Kinglake and Healesville-Toolangi roads, are expected to be finished later this year.
