SIX of the last term’s Yarra Ranges councillors have been re-elected to their posts and three new faces will join the council, with the Victorian Electoral Commission officially calling the race.

The winners of the council election were announced on the VEC’s website over the weekend, before VEC Returning Officer Peter Williams made the official announcement at Lilydale’s council chambers on Monday, 31 October.

The results will see three new faces around the council table, with former councillor and mayor Tim Heenan unseating Billanook Ward’s Maria McCarthy with a 742 vote margin after preferences.

Former counillor Richard Higgins will be the new councillor for Chirnside Ward, beating incumbent Andrew Witlox by 1002 votes, while Tony Stevenson has been declared the winner of Chandler Ward with a lead of more than 3500 votes over the next candidate.

Meanwhile, Streeton Ward councillor Noel Cliff, Walling Ward councillor Len Cox, O’Shannassy Ward councillor Jim Child, Ryrie Ward councillor Fiona McAllister, Lyster Ward councillor Mike Clarke and Melba Ward’s Terry Avery, were all re-elected.

In his victory speech, Cr Heenan acknowledged his fellow candidates, who he said put in “a lot of time and effort” to their campaigns.

“My sincere wishes for a great future for the three of them,” he said.

“I suppose the most important thing I want to say is Australians are really funny in regards to elections these days ... but local government councillors are the closest things in grassroots to the people, and that’s what I want to keep in the back of my mind for the next four years.

“I want to be the closest as I can to the people - it’s their thoughts, it’s their permission they’ve given me to stand in their place, here, and they’re expecting a lot of big things and I certainly hope to be able to deliver those big things for them in the next four years.”

Fyffe plans retirement EVELYN MP Christine Fyffe has announced her present term in the seat will be her last.

With preselection for sitting members due to open next month, Ms Fyffe needed to make a call on her future.

Ms Fyffe told the ‘Mail’ she felt that her time was up because she couldn’t commit to another term, which, with state elections in 2018, would mean a further six years in the role.

The Liberal MP first won the seat of Evelyn in 1999 and has enjoyed strong support over that time, though she did lose the seat in 2002, only to win it back in 2006.

Ms Fyffe said the decision was entirely hers and not driven by party pressure.

“Matthew Guy left the decision entirely up to me, he’s a terrific leader and been very supportive,” she said.

“I just felt that six years was going to be too much for me ... the time is right.”

While Ms Fyffe still has two years to serve, and plenty of work ahead, she was happy to reflect on her many years of service.

“I’ve been exceptionally privileged, and it’s been very satisfying, to have represented

Evelyn for such a long time,” she said.

“The highs have been the small changes in individuals or groups, I’ve gained immense satisfaction in helping people negotiate the bureaucracy to achieve positive change.”

Ms Fyffe said one of her most rewarding achievements had been improving service access for those dealing with eating disorders.

“I worked closely with Martin Foley... many of the things we helped to implement are still in place ... that all started from communications I’d had with my electorate,” he said.

Ms Fyffe’s contribution over the years runs deep.

In addition to her many involvements with local groups and committees, one of her major roles was as Commissioner of Yarra Ranges Shire from 1994 to 1997.

In this role, she helped to oversee the amalgamation of the shire.

“At the time, I was president of the winegrowers and on the regional tourism board,” she said.

“I’d come to the attention of Jeff Kennett and was appointed as Commissioner.

“Some might not see it that

way, but I think it has worked really well.”

She said some of the challenges during that time included managing some councils with minimal budgets and managing the duplication of services, which meant a reduction in staff.

Ms Fyffe could only have dreamed of such contributions when she arrived in Australia as a ‘Ten Pound Pom’ from the United Kingdom in 1967.

She started life in Australia in migration housing in Nunawading, before developing the award-winning Yarra Burn Winery and Restaurant at Yarra Junction.

“Incredibly, I came to Launching Place during only my second day in Australia and I fell in love with the scenery.

I thought, ‘how beautiful is this place’,” she said.

“There is incredible opportunity in Australia and one of the amazing joys of my job is attending citizenship ceremonies.”

While it’s a little too early to fully contemplate life in retirement, Ms Fyffe said she planned to indulge in gardening and watch her beloved Essendon Bombers more often.

Delivering on station pledge WORKS have started on a second entrance at Lilydale train station, which aims to make it safer and more convenient for locals to catch the train.

The new station entrance at the northern end of the platform will include an accessible ramp, as well as a pedestrian crossing, featuring automatic gates and audible alarms.

The existing second entrance was closed in 2013 due to safety concerns, forcing passengers to walk hundreds of metres through the station car park to access the main entrance.

The new entrance will be fully accessible and new myki readers will make the transition between the car park and platform as seamless as possible.

Member for Eastern Metropolitan Region Shaun Leane visited Lilydale train station on Monday, 24 October, to announce the new entrance will be completed by the end of this year.

He said the Victorian Government was delivering on an important election commitment.

“We promised it, and now

we’re getting it done - the second entrance at Lilydale station will be reopened by the end of the year,” he said.

“People will no longer have to walk hundreds of metres through the car park to catch the train.

“This new entrance will be safer and more accessible for all passengers.”

Train services will continue to operate as normal during construction, with a temporary reduction in car spaces to get on with building the new entrance.

Apex gang a concern From my

AS many of you know, street crime is increasing in our communities.

I have spoken to many local residents who have been victims of break-ins and robberies, and, very worryingly, many of these are while residents are inside their own homes.

In fact, one local resident has told me stories of how her family home has been broken into many times.

During one of those incidents, the family woke and interrupted the thieves, discovering that their car keys were missing - however the family car was still there.

This meant, unfortunately, that as they listened to the thieves yell “Apex N*****s” from the no doubt stolen car as they sped off; the family knew the thieves would return.

Sure enough, they did return to complete the theft, but thankfully some vigilant neighbours were able to scare them off.

This is not a one-off story, and sadly it is becoming more and more common.

This is why it’s so important to me that we tackle this crime wave with the intensity and strength that is needed.

I have spoken out and suggested that we develop current deportation measures and anti-bikie gangs legislation to include those who commit

offences as a part of gang membership - particularly for those who do not hold Australian citizenship.

Federal intervention could help police target the 400-strong Apex gang - which is mainly made up of juvenile offenders but has committed a string of violent home invasions and carjackings across Melbourne and is developing increasingly strong ties with bikies and crime syndicates.

I suggest that Apex and other violent street gangs should be targeted by the Australian Gangs Intelligence Co-ordination Centre.

Doing this through investigators from the tax office, Department of Human Services, state and federal police, the Australian Crime Commission and Border Force systematically destroys gangs by targeting their leaders.

In addition, something else we should be looking at is enlisting The National Anti-Gang Squad to focus on Apex and other violent gangs of street thugs.

While both these organisations currently focus on outlaw motorcycle gangs and organised crime syndicates at a federal level, it is my understanding that the policy was originally written with all violent gangs in mind, therefore Apex should be brought into focus.

It’s vital that young Apex gang members are stopped before they end up in adult prisons and come under the influence of more hardened criminals.

Something needs to be done above the current measures to protect our community from this crime wave.

Her last trip in August used all of the family’s funds, but Mr Kennedy came up with the idea to endure a 160km bike ride from Wangaratta to Bright and return on Sunday 6 November, to raise the $11,000 needed.

She is due to receive her next round of treatment in Philadelphia in February.

“I can’t think of a better way to celebrate my 60th birthday. My family means everything to me and I will do whatever I can to support my daughters and their wonderful families,” Mr Kennedy said.

“Amali is such a courageous little girl and is trying so hard.

“As her grandfather, I just want to give Amali every opportunity to reach her full potential.”

Mr Kennedy has been training on the weekends, and has never ridden 160km before.

“I ride regularly with a couple of friends who will be supporting me ... we’re not the fastest riders, (but) we are committed to keep a steady pace on the day,” he said.

A PROUD Belgrave grandfather is going to endure a 160-kilometre bike ride in one day for his 60th birthday to raise money for his granddaughter’s treatment in Philadelphia, US. When three-year-old Amali Chandrasekara was born, her little body was put through life-saving blood transfusions and neo-natal intensive care, after unexpected complications at birth.

The complications also resulted in her identical twin not surviving birth.

At seven days old, Amali was diagnosed with a severe hypoxic brain injury, which presented as cerebral palsy.

Australian specialists believed she would have ongoing developmental issues and delays.

Amali has been attending the Institute for the Achievement of Human Potential in Philadelphia, US, every sixth months since November 2015, due to there not being a program like it in Australia.

Specialists from Australia told the family Amali would never be able to move, but has defied odds and since her treatment overseas – she now sits, crawls, feeds herself and interacts with her big sisters.

Her grandfather, Allan Kennedy said she had improved dramatically.

“Already we have seen her develop beyond expectations,” he said.

The current therapies she attends regularly include osteopathy, kinesiology, occupational therapy, physiotherapy, speech therapy, therapeutic yoga, aquatic therapy and ayurvedic treatments.

With treatments in the US, Amali is expected to be walking and talking within the

YARRA Ranges Shire ratepayers have the chance to provide feedback on a proposal that will shape the future development of Burnham Beeches.

In question are planning scheme amendment C142, and a concurrent planning permit, which will enable the development of a hotel and resort at the site.

Presently, the land is in a Special Use Zone Schedule 2 (SUZ2), which provides for the use and development of land for major tourist facilities.

However, SUZ2 imposes restrictive limits on patron numbers.

In April this year, developers Shannon Bennett and Adam Garrisson cleared one major planning hurdle when they won council support for a revised proposal.

An initial planning scheme amendment, which included up to 80 hotel villas being built on the site, was rejected in August 2015.

The developers plan to restore the historic mansion as a luxury hotel, with staff accommodation, as well as include a restaurant and microbrewery on the site.

Changes have been requested to allow a larger range of land use than exists, subject to a planning permit.

To achieve this, the owners have proposed to create a new schedule to the Special Use Zone, Schedule 11 (SUZ11).

Yarra Ranges Council Director of Social and Economic Development, Ali Wastie, said the proposal aimed to make future patron caps, and a range of potential land uses, subject to

planning permits rather that zone controls.

“This would allow for greater flexibility for operations at Burnham Beeches to change over time,” Ms Wastie said.

“This development would bring a variety of economic benefits by boosting tourism in the area and providing job opportunities.

“The Norris Building is a significant example of an art deco mansion in Australia. It is currently in a dilapidated condition and in need of repair. It would be wonderful to see this heritage restored.”

Ms Wastie said council would need to work carefully through any issues, including possible traffic and landscape impacts.

In conjunction with the planning scheme amendment, the owners of the land have applied for a planning permit for: A licensed residential hotel in the Norris Building of 48 rooms (including ancillary bar and dining areas); Two licensed restaurants (existing bakery/cafe and a new restaurant) in the piggery building; A brewery with associated licensed food and drink areas; A shop and licensed food and drink premises; Staff accommodation (two buildings) and guest accommodation; and Vegetation removal.

The application is now on public exhibition.

In the swim to help out

By Jodie Symonds THE walls of Monbulk Aquatic Centre have been filled with fund-raiser flyers to support Monbulk’s Felicity Hostettler, who is suffering from brain cancer.

The fund-raiser will be held on Sunday 6 November, to help the Hostettler family with financial pressures due to medical expenses.

In August, two unusual migraines prompted Ms Hostettler’s husband, Dave, to make her visit a doctor.

The doctor sent her for tests and she was later diagnosed with a malignant grade three cancer.

Three days later, the tumour - the size of a lemon - was removed and Ms Hostettler then endured six weeks of radiation therapy.

The fund-raiser will be held four days before Ms Hostettler begins 12 months of chemotherapy.

“It’ll hopefully give me a bit of a boost that I need before starting chemo,” Ms Hostettler said.

“I’m really excited for the fundraiser - it’s incredible the amount of continual support we’ve had.

“I don’t know what we would do without all of this support.”

Ms Hostettler and her husband have two children, two-year-old Eadie, and 15-month-old Wilfred.

Monbulk Aquatic Centre Gym Manager, Dan Rasitti said he was happy to support people in need.

“We love to support people in our community,“ Mr Rasitti said.

There will be a lot on offer for the kids, including a jumping castle, pool inflatable, Steve the Magician, the Paddle Pop lion, craft workshops and games.

A FAMILY fun day held in Olinda on Sunday, 27 November will provide residents with information on how to prepare for the upcoming fire season.

Held at the Olinda Football Club Pavillion from 11am-3pm, 'Are You Ready Ridge Top?' will educate residents on what to do in the event of an emergency.

There will be information on taking responsibility for the residents’ own safety, by learning as much as they can about the hazard and risk of fire.

The annual event features Olinda, Sassafras-Ferny Creek and KaloramaMt Dandenong volunteer fire brigades.

There will be displays including specialist fire-fighting appliances and equipment, Victoria Police vehicles to view, SES, Yarra Ranges Council, and junior brigade members showing their skills in demonstrations.

Enabling interaction with volunteer brigade members, the event provides an opportunity to see and talk about what it is to be a volunteer fire fighter, or support member, with the prospect of seeking further information and membership.

Children can enjoy face painting, a jumping castle, craft making, a jellybean count, and a giant inflatable slide.

“The day is a great opportunity for our local volunteer brigades to meet and interact with the communities and each other, and the other emergency service agencies,” the committee of management at Ridge Top Brigades Family Fun and Information Day said.

Properties are ‘destroyed’

By Peter Douglas YARRA Ranges Shire has confirmed 28 properties as being ‘destroyed’ as a result of the 9 October windstorm event.

In total, 132 properties were reported to council as being damaged and now all have been inspected, with details showing most of the destroyed properties were in the Selby area.

In what has been described as one of the worst natural disaster events to hit the region since Black Saturday, the shire is still busy both managing and developing a response.

Council said they’re still receiving an average of 25 calls per day, most relating to trees or social and financial support.

Yarra Ranges Shire Chief Executive Officer, Glenn Patterson, said there was still a big job ahead.

“We are mindful of the size of the task at hand, and the need to clear fallen trees and tree debris quickly to ensure we are adequately prepared for the upcoming fire danger period,” Mr Patterson said.

“We are also aware of a number of residents who have already begun clean-up activities on their own properties, which is great to see.”

Mr Patterson said the shire’s planning team was preparing to fast-track a large volume of permit applications, as a result of residents looking to rebuild.

Meanwhile, compiled statistics are beginning to show just how severe the impact on the region has been.

The majority of council’s 58 fire access roads have suffered significant damage from fallen trees, blocking access and increasing fuel loads.

Waspish response OUTSIDE our house in Olinda, on the opposite nature strip, is a big, beautiful Eucalyptus Regnans – the Mountain Ash. For many years, the local kookaburras have nested in a hollow about 15 feet up the trunk of this tree.

However, this year, there are no kookaburras nesting because the hollow has been taken over

by European wasps.

We have reported this to the council, as the nest is in a tree on council land but after two weeks of ringing have had no action.

We have been told that someone will ring us back, but no phone call so far.

I rang a pest control company that we have used for many years and was told that because

the wasp nest is on council land, they cannot get rid of the wasps for us even if we paid them.

We have informed the council that this firm will attend to the wasps, if they have a council order but as of today have still had no action and no feedback.

Luckily, today is quite cool and the wasps are not as active but the wasps are still coming into our property – and doubtless other properties, too.

We really are wondering, ‘just what we pay our rates for, if they cannot attend to a wasp nest on their land’.

What does the council give us for our rates?

After sharing and speaking at a school community meal, the students transformed the school to match the theme and slept the night. A seamy underbelly tale

By Peter Douglas EMERALD author Peter Oredsson is on a mission to sell the intrigue of Melbourne to the world.

Particularly the infamous Melbourne underworld.

Oredsson is due to release is third book, ‘The Sicilian Favour’, on 30 November in London, a crime fiction release that has been described as a compelling tale which “mixes horrible fascination and personal empathy”.

After being born and raised in Hasslehom, Sweden, Oredsson enjoyed an interesting journey to Emerald.

At age 23, Peter immigrated to Australia alone.

He did not have a great knowledge of the English language, but that did not stop him from finding employment and building a life here.

Oredsson eventually married and has two children.

Three years ago, he and his family moved to “lovely” Emerald from Heathmont and Oredsson said “that is one of the best things we’ve done!”

Although carving out a career in sales and marketing, he has also managed to publish two books, ‘Peeta Oreda and the Power of Numbers’, and ‘The Blood-line Incursion’.

Oredsson’s latest offering is described as an exotic tale of love and loss, greed and fear, power and desire set against the exotic backdrop of the criminal underworld in Melbourne.

Oredsson said it was a request from his children that led to his path as an author.

“I started to write 10 years ago after requests from my children to tell them about my very naughty childhood in Sweden,” he said.

Mystery of the pointless Inferno (M) Starring Tom Hanks, Felicity Jones, Ben Foster INFERNO, the third film adapted from the novels of Dan Brown, is a tedious, overwhelmingly pointless mystery movie.

A Dante-obsessed geneticist, Bertrand Zobrist (Ben Foster), has created a deadly virus that will wipe out half of the world’s population, and Harvard symbologist Robert Langdon (Tom Hanks) must regain

his memories and find the virus before it can be released.

Looking at the positives, Hanks is affably engaging as ever, Felicity Jones is a graceful, perceptive on-screen partner as Dr Sienna Brooks, and Inferno has punchy sound design and some truly stunning imagery.

But the languid plot moves in fits and starts, more concerned with obtuse puzzles than developing any of its supporting characters. The film fails to drum up much tension about

an apocalyptic virus, content to just talk about it, and squanders any intriguing moral ambiguity it could have generated.

The film also has one of the worst twists in years, with Langdon’s amnesia and the extended chase sequences orchestrated not for any organic story reason, but simply for the sake of a twist.

Hanks, Jones, director Ron Howard and author Dan Brown all deserve better than this slow, contrived mess of a film.

The Division 8 side had a great game at home against Box Hill, eventually coming out winners by 14 shots. Showing great form, this team is sitting in second position.

Grand finals glory for Lakers EMERALD Lakers Basketball Club had seven teams compete in grand final games on Saturday and Sunday, 22-23 October, in the Knox Basketball Association.

Captain’s masterful knock

By Chris Anderson YARRA VALLEY CRICKET ASSOCIATION WITH the heavy rains kicking off last weekend calling a halt to cricketing action, the exact opposite occurred across the Yarra Valley this weekend with the revised one day matches for Round 4 being played in spectacular conditions.

With an interrupted beginning to the season, players were keen to get on the field and blow out some early season rust.

Mount Evelyn were one such team in the competition’s premier grade DJ Strachan Shield.

Courtesy of a bye, unlike the other teams in the grade that managed to pick up a game last Sunday, the Rovers sat out last weekend and were eager to strut their stuff.

That they did, as they travelled to Yarra Junction on put on a clinical display led by captain Kane Jones.

The Rovers won the toss and duly batted in great conditions.

Yarra Junction boast a consistent bowling line up that offers challenges both fast and slow, and they certainly challenged the Rovers early.

Quick wickets to Nick Bark and Hayden Wilson, coupled with some accurate tight bowling had the visitors on the ropes early.

Kane Jones joined Jon Williams at the crease and although they found the going tough; they were able to guide their team through a tricky part of the innings.

Williams fell before he could make a considerable score, but his influence on the rest of the innings can’t be underestimated.

Jones kicked on with the remainder of the batting line-up as the scoreboard started to tick over with more regularity.

The Eagles bowlers weren’t to be deterred and they continued to bowl well.

They managed to secure regular wickets, while one sensed that they could quickly break the innings open.

However between the strikes, Jones mastered the attack with a combination of brutal drives and deft sweep shots.

Then, Jones was able to muster some valuable support from the middle-order.

In the end, Jones collected a muchdeserved century and even upon his departure, much of the damage had been done.

With a valuable late flurry of runs to Chad Witherdin (22 not out) and the rest of the tail, the score settled at 9/192; an impressive total at Yarra Junction.

As is the case with all cricket, when playing in the same conditions, if one team can make a total, so can the other with the same application.

Mount Evelyn made the best start possible, with an early run-out, followed by two wickets to Kane Jones putting the Eagles on the back foot early.

Cam Spaulding (29) joined Quinton Hodgkinson (21) at the wicket, while the pair set about rebuilding the innings.

Against some steady bowling, the

pair refused to let the pressure of the large total dictate any rash batting.

Gareth Fraser (2/24) and younger brother Darcy (2/42) put together and excellent partnership of bowling, keeping the explosive batting pair contained.

After an extended battle, eventually the stalemate was broken, as the bowlers won the arm wrestle with both Hodgkinson and Spaulding falling in the pursuit of much needed quick runs.

From there, the remaining batsmen were unable to pick up the slack and the innings was wrapped up relatively quickly, inside the allotted overs, for 91.

Mount Evelyn now return home for a clash against Yarra Glen, and will be keen to continue their unbeaten start to the season and establish their position in the top four, while Yarra Junction host Warburton-Millgrove in a key early season match-up between two teams evenly matched on the ladder.

At the end of last season, Warburton-Millgrove and Healesville played two titanic games clashes either side of the home and away season.

Saturday proved that little has changed as the teams fought out another classic at Healesville.

Warburton-Millgrove won the toss and gladly accepted the opportunity to bat first.

In typical fashion, the dynamic David Lever (43) quickly put his stamp on the game with some free flowing stroke play, as he quickly had the Burras in a strong position.

At 1/73 after 15 overs, the visitors held all the aces in the contest.

With the introduction of Burras’ nemesis Ash Hamer, the game momentarily changed direction as he broke the valuable partnership between Lever and Jason King, and with Chance Burridge (2/35) capitalising with two quick wickets at the other end, the contest soon changed complexion.

Brett Winzer joined Mick Walker at the wicket, and the pair expertly navigated their way through the next 15 overs to rebuild the innings.

Then, at 4/115 after 30 overs, the Burras were well placed to put together a charge towards a significant total.

That they did.

The pair flicked the scoring switch and did in brilliant fashion.

The Burras managed to score 94 runs in the last 10 overs in a sensational assault on the home team.

Healesville had no answers to the all-round strokeplay of the pair.

When the dust settled in the penultimate over, with the fall of Winzer for a well made half century, the pair had compiled an impressive 120-run partnership and had driven the team score beyond the 200 mark.

Walker navigated his way to the conclusion of the innings scoring an impressive unbeaten innings of 63, and the Burras had finished in an imposing position at 7/209.

In last season’s contests, the Burras batted first, compiled large totals, and the Bloods expertly chased the runs down for two exceptional victories.

So deep in the minds of both teams, despite this being a total that would scare most, they knew that the Bloods

had the capabilities to chase it down.

With some tight bowling early, Warburton-Millgrove ensured that the target continued to get further and further away.

Bryan Scanlon (28) and Brandon D’Amore anchored the early part of the chase, and, despite finding it difficult to score regular boundaries, the pair did manage to set a platform for which the Bloods could take some risks in chasing the runs.

With the pair falling before the drinks break, the home team needed a much needed scoring injection as they were precariously placed at 3/67 at the mid innings break.

Scott Hamer (46) had combined well with Ash Hamer (43) last round, with the pair setting themselves for an attack on the challenging total.

Over the next nine overs, the pair put together a rapid 61-run partnership to give the innings some valuable momentum.

Unfortunately for the home team, Ash Hamer was unable to be the batting hero as he was last season, with his wicket putting a significant dent in the chase.

After an unfortunate run-out, Dermott Fry joined Scott Hamer at the wicket.

The pair continued the assault.

But with the run rate required ballooning out, despite the free-flowing scoring, the Bloods just couldn’t keep up despite their best efforts.

In the end, the experienced bowling from Daniel Lever (3/32), David Lever and Mick Walker proved valuable as the visitors were able to restrict the final total to 5/191 and take away the valuable win.

After a disappointing result against Woori Yallock in the opening game, Warburton-Millgrove have been gradually building their form and will be keen to test Yarra Junction in a game that will have early implications on the top four, while Healesville travel to Seville and desperately need to put some points on the board as last season’s grand finalists are winless after four rounds.

Woori Yallock have emerged from the first four rounds as the early pack leader enhancing their prospect of three title on the run.

After accounting for WarburtonMillgrove and Healesville over their opening rounds, the Tigers outclassed new boys Yarra Glen with an even display with bat and ball.

Yarra Glen opened the match with the bat. The home side made a good fist of matching it against the best bowling attack in the competition.

The in-form Simon Young took the early wicket of John Orren, but from there Yarra Glen dug in its heals and resisted against a challenging opening spell from the Tigers.

James Kelly and Brendan Ricci combined to add some grit to the innings as the pair navigated their team through the opening overs.

Despite quick wickets falling after the dismissal of Kelly, Ricci was able to continue the level pace of the Yarra Glen innings with new partner Richard Ellisdon.

On the back of a 52-run partnership,

the pair were able to expertly guide the side to 4/104 with nine overs remaining; a position in which they could launch an attack on a decent score.

Unfortunately for Ricci (48), he lost his wicket when the whips began to crack and this put a dent in Yarra Glen’s ability to press for quick runs.

Ellisdon (35) was able to guide the visitors through the majority of the remaining overs to help them post a defendable total of 10/137.

Woori Yallock’s recent success has been built on strong contributions from their top order.

This game proved to be no exception, as the Tigers challenged the young Yarra Glen attack from the outset.

Joshua Clare was able to remove the dangerous Ryan Smith relatively early, but that was the only success the visitors would have as Mick Dwyer (50 not out) and Luke Smith (64 not out) combined for an impressive unbeaten century partnership.

The pair was able to keep the scoreboard ticking over regularly with regular boundaries and little risk.

In the end, they were able to guide their team to the total with relative ease, as the game was closed with the Tigers chasing the total down with the loss of just one wicket, and 13 overs to spare.

Woori Yallock now have a couple weeks off courtesy of the bye.

They will work hard on ensuring the break doesn’t affect their early season form, while Yarra Glen would be encouraged by their improvements over the opening rounds, and will be keen to continue their development as they travel to Mount Evelyn.

Jones boy leads way

YARRA VALLEY ATHLETICS THE weather gods finally turned favourable for Yarra Ranges Athletics athletes last weekend and the athletes made the most of it with some superb performances.

The first twilight round of the year gave our athletes an opportunity to race under lights making the evening more exciting for all.

The club would like to thank the age group leaders and other helpers for again stepping up and making the evening well run and enjoyable for the athletes.

The senior team competed at AV Shield round at Nunawading.

A great turnout of athletes ensured we had some excellent results across all grades.

A special welcome to new members competing for Yarra Ranges Athletics for the first time; well done to Graham Coutts, Anika Homann, Georgia Homann and Maddison Phauh.

Good luck to all athletes competing at the Victorian All Schools Championships next weekend.

The rest will be back at Morrison Reserve at 8.30am next Saturday morning for round 5 of Little Athletics season.

Relay teams will be finalised shortly for EMR relays; we look forward to seeing lots of smiling faces representing Yarra Ranges Athletics.

EMERALD GOLF THE clouds left, the rain left and the sun came with a delightful blaze on Saturday at Emerald Golf Club.

Conditions were made for good scoring but most found that they were not in accord with the conditions.

It was left to Peter Jones (23) to lead the way home when he waltzed in with 38 stableford points and assumed the pose of a satisfied winner overall and in B Grade.

Once again it was Ken Hill (15) who led the mob from A Grade in when he played to his handicap for 36 points.

Of the great unwashed, only Sepp Krummenacher (22) with 36 and Captain Dean Shannon (14) with 35 are worth mentioning.

Ian Scott was nearest the pin on the 4th, Krummenacher the 7th, Leigh Morison the 12th, Broc Reynolds the 13th and John Keys picked up the pro pin cash on the 18th.

Peter Glasscock showed the long hitters a thing or two with his long drive on the 9th.

Rosalie Martin won the ladies event on a countback from a bevy of stragglers quite a distance behind.

On Wednesday when the Opulently Floppy Golfers rolled in they were informed that it was a stableford event with variations sufficiently oblique to cause mass confusion and many furrowed brows.

When all the cards were checked out and evaluated, it was found that Graham White had a valid card with 50 points at the top.

He was the winner from Bobby Kennedy next with 45 and the rest were somewhere west of confused.

Next week the Medallist of Medallists will be played for with the November monthly medal as a side salad.
