Safe and sunny SUNDAY 2 October saw the Noosa Nippers hit the beach for the first time for the 20162017 season.

Nearly 500 Nippers turned up for a perfect morning on Noosa Main Beach.

The sun was beating down and the water was crystal clear.

The lack of swell gave the new under-five recruits a gentle introduction to surf lifesaving.

Noosa Nipper memberships are still open online until the end of the month so anyone who wants to stay safe on beaches should sign up now.

Family violence up THE incidence of domestic and family violence has increased throughout the Sunshine Coast, according to the annual statistical review released by the Queensland Police Service.

In the Sunshine Coast district, which includes Noosa, Pomona, Cooroy and Eumundi, the number of domestic violence applications increased from 1368 in 2014/2015 to 1660 in the past year, a rate of 19 incidents per 100,000 people, while the number of breaches of domestic violence protection orders increased from 733 to 1018 over the same period.

Sunshine Coast District Officer Superintendent Darryl Johnson said the increase in reported incidents didn’t reflect an increase in violence, rather an increase in the community’s confidence in reporting incidents to the police.

“The increase in reports of domestic and family violence can be attributed to the proactive work being done by police in the district and from the community gaining more confidence in reporting incidents to police,” he said.

“The Queensland Police Service is committed to working in partnership with the people of Queensland to provide professional policing ser-

vices that will, over time, prevent and reduce the incidents of domestic violence in Queensland.”

The annual crime rate data also showed a decrease in assaults, robberies and fraud offences across the Sunshine Coast district, but an overall increase of one per cent in crime rates.

According to the Annual Statistical Review for 2015/2016, there were 654 assaults reported in the Sunshine Coast district, plus 248 sexual offences, 30 reported incidents of stalking, 1472 reported incidents of unlawful entry, 1573 incidents of theft from cars, 943 reported incidents of fraud, three reported

prostitution offences and 290 offences against the Weapons Act. The Statistical Review represents a comprehensive insight into the level and nature of crime reported for each police district throughout Queensland, and according to the data, the overall crime rate across the Sunshine Coast district increased by one per cent to 24,494 when compared to the data from the 2014/2015 period.

Superintendent Johnson said the overall crime rate of offences against the person over the past 10 years has decreased by 35 per cent and offences against property has decreased by 27.4 per cent.

“Sunshine Coast police make no apologies for the targeting of those people who commit crime with a focus centred upon those people using and supplying dangerous drugs, which then leads to the commission of serious crimes including break and enters and armed robberies,” he said.

According to the statistical review, there were 4829 drug offences reported in the Sunshine Coast district for the 2015/2016 period, including 79 incidents of trafficking, 2208 of possessing drugs, 163 of producing drugs and 137 incidents of selling or supplying drugs.

Vaccine set to save koalas

By Jolene Ogle RELIEF is in sight for the devastated Noosa koala population with a new chlamydia vaccine likely to be trialled throughout the region.

Speaking at a fundraising luncheon at Makepeace Island on Friday 30 September, microbiology professor at the University of the Sunshine Coast Peter Timms said he and his research team were excited to take the research into practical application.

“We’ve been working on developing a vaccine for five or six years and everything looks really promising so here’s our chance to take it into a real population and use it as one of the management tools,” he said.

Professor Timms said using a vaccine in this way for a koala population hasn’t been done before but the vaccination program could see a great improvement in reproductive rates and reduce koala deaths.

“That’s why we need to start with a new population and vaccinate as many koalas as we can,” he said.

“We’re taking the research into reality and hope to start saving animals today and tomorrow. We can get

started pretty soon on this and I think it’s a really exciting day.”

Professor Timms, along with Dr Jon Hanger, is part of the Richard Branson Koala Conservancy program that aims to encourage collaborative conservation and research measures between the government, scientific and community groups.

In a statement to media, the program is said to “fund koala research to contribute to the sustainability of koalas in Queensland and the Noosa region in particular”.

“With so little known about the Noosa koala population (in scientific terms), the big opportunity lies in dovetailing the first regional Koala Conservation Management Plan (currently being finalised by Noosa Council and applying scientific rigor to fill in the blanks, so that our future koala conservation efforts... are scientifically sound and well-directed,” the media statement said.

Dr Hanger said studies on Noosa’s koala population are lacking and he looks forward to learning more about what factors impact the local animals’ survival rates.

“We know there are a range of factors that are commonly affect-

ing koalas throughout south-east Queensland.

“We know chlamydia is an important factor and we know that causes the death of koalas, illness and reproductive loss.

“We know that wild dogs can be a critical factor as well and we know domestic dogs and cars can be,” he said.

“The key factor is we need to know what proportion those are playing in terms of the mortality of the population because then we can target our resources so we know we are getting the best effect.

“Ultimately that means going into a koala population, catching and radio tagging as many as we can, and following those koalas so we know if they die, what they died from.”

Dr Hanger said so long as the team can intensively manage the koala population then a growth in the population could be seen within two years.

“If we capture a koala and find that it’s sick we treat it straight away and as soon as we start treating a number of koalas, we’re already having benefits for the population in regards to reducing the infection rates and vaccinating koalas to ensure

Makepeace Island co-owner Brett Godfrey said he looked forward to helping support the future scientific research of local koala populations and the $25,000 raised at the luncheon is a great place to start.

“I’ve spent 15 years coming to Noosa and the koala population in that time has been decimated. I just

don’t see them in the North Shore or the parks anymore,” he said.

“Today is all about trying to raise awareness and see if we can raise some money for (Professor) Peter and (Dr) John, who are the foremost authorities in this area and I believe with our help and our support, we can change what’s is happening (to the koala population) in this part of Queensland.”

Long-term koala plan slammed ENVIRONMENT Minister Dr Steven Miles has announced a new survey that will ask for the community’s opinion on the declining koala population.

Dr Miles visited Makepeace Island on Friday 30 September for a fund-raising luncheon and said the government was now seeking comment from the public through a new online survey that would gauge community perceptions on koalas and their management.

Dr Miles said the survey would be used in part by a newly appointed koala expert panel in the development of recommendation for future strategies to ensure the long-term survival of koalas in the wild.

“We want input from the public and will also be consulting with key organisations including regional councils, land use and planning representatives, and koala conservation representatives,” he said.

Some of the questions on the survey include: What are the threats that are having the greatest impact to koalas in your local area? Can you recommend measures that could address these threats? Do you record koala sightings in your area?

Child attacked by dingo

By Hollie Harris THERE has been another incident on Fraser Island during the peak holiday period with a six-year-old child being bitten on the buttocks.

The child was hospitalised after suffering a severe laceration which, according to reports, was about 5cm.

The huge volume of cars and visitors to the island make it inevitable that wildlife and visitor encounters will unfortunately continue to occur.

Fenced areas were created to minimise the encounters between people and dingoes, to ensure safer areas for visitors and, in turn, protecting the islands dingo numbers.

Save Fraser Island Dingoes Inc. representative, Cheryl Bryant said that it was sad that so much of the

wildlife continued to pay the price.

“The influx of thousands of tourists during these peak periods clearly disturbs the wildlife and damages the environment," Ms Bryant said.

Some animals succumb to vehicle strikes, interference of their habitat, and dingoes are destroyed for what is considered aggressive behaviour.

As a World Heritage listed island, the flora and fauna should be the most important consideration.

The University of the Sunshine Coast intends to undertake a research project, beginning in 2017 to determine how to minimise the impact of vehicle traffic.

Ms Bryant said this was a much-needed study and was concerned about these incidents and attacks.

“Although there are countless signs on the Island regarding appropriate behaviour, including keeping children close and supervised, there seems to be little responsibility placed on the visitors.

“Perhaps families with young children should consider staying in fenced areas.

After all, that is why they were erected.

“I think the community is frustrated to hear that another dingo will be destroyed,”she said.

There certainly needs to be more consultation to prevent these negative encounters and protect both wildlife and visitors.

It is not only the dingo that is impacted from the large influx of people visiting the island as many other species are also affected.

Fraser Island dingoes are not the only ones suffering from increasing tourist and visitor numbers.

Weaving stars to end violence Chandler’s heart for Cambodia SPYING the occasional star in Noosa is not such a rare occurrence, but 10,000 stars is really something else.

For three weeks from 4 October, an installation of 10,000 hand woven stars will be on display at Noosa Civic Shopping Centre as part of the Sunshine Coast Star Weave Community’s contribution to the international project One Million Stars to end Violence.

Queensland Police Service superintendent Darryl Johnson will launch the star installation on Wednesday 5 October at 10.30am and project founder Maryann Talia Pau will visit Noosa for the launch and to conduct a workshop.

Stars co-organiser Bernice Childs said it was wonderful how hundreds of local residents had got behind the project.

“Some made a few stars and some made hundreds. Community and arts centres, libraries, schools and some workplaces also got into weaving stars. The project created a platform for discussing ways in which we all can contribute to ending violence,” she said.

Bernice said it was great how in such a short time through the star weave project, new friendships were formed and networks created.

“It reinforces the value of community and how positive change can happen when people work together,” she said.

After the installation at Noosa Civic is dismantled, the 10,000 stars will be sent on to contribute to the one million stars on the Gold Coast where stars from all over the world will come together in one spectacular installation at the Gold Coast 2018 Commonwealth Games (GC2018).

WHILE most students spent their school holidays relaxing on one of Noosa’s beautiful beaches, Noosa District State High School Year 11 student leader Chandler Kamradt was helping others in need.

Chandler headed to Cambodia to help build homes for impoverished families and to teach English in a Cambodian school along with a team of volunteers who take part in projects in rural communities.

“This is such a great experience, unlike anything I have done before," Chandler said.

Highlights for Chandler included meeting the families the new homes are to house and the feeling of accomplishment Chandler has experienced upon seeing the homes through to completion.

“We did one house in just two days,“ Chandler said.

The Love and Heart School took Chandler and other English speaking volunteers in to run English lessons and to interact with the students to allow for the students and the volunteers to develop and deepen intercultural understandings.

“I will miss all the students at the Love and Heart School so much," Chandler said.

“This is an amazing trip.

I hope to do something again like this in the near future," Chandler said.

Deadly fishing line off waterways FISH and other sea life can relax knowing the fishing line recovery bin will now be funded until at least the end of the year to help keep deadly, loose fishing line out of the waterways.

Noosa Integrated Catchment Association (NICA) chairman Tony Haslam said the funding from Noosa Council was very welcomed, and thanked council for their timely intervention to ensure the continuation of the program.

The program has been in operation since 2004 to help reduce the amount of fishing line litter found in the waterways and coastal zones of the Noosa area.

Based on a model from the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission Monofilament Recovery Project in the US, the project is the first of its kind in Australia.

Initially designed to target fishing line litter alone, the program was adapted to include bait bags, lures, hooks, sinkers and all other recreational fishing-related waste items.

Funded by Noosa Council, the NICA program aims to raise public awareness about the hazards associated with recreational – fishing related waste, prevent wildlife injury and death associated with fishing line entanglement and ingestion, as well as prevent leeching contamination of ground and waterways from lead-containing sinkers.

When completed, the cottage will provide a one-stop shop for community information, as well as providing

meeting and office spaces for local community groups.

“This is a great example of the council and the community working together to renovate a building that will become an important community asset,” Mr O’Brien said.

“The project is also providing construction traineeships to help people gain skills and experience that potential employers look for. The work that has been done so far on the cottage and its garden is a credit to their efforts, and

I commend them for their commitment to the project.

“Tait Duke Cottage was gifted to the Noosa Council by the Tait and Duke family to benefit the Noosa community, and it’s great to see it being restored for use by local schools and service groups.”

The project is being managed by the Noosa Council, United Synergies and the Rotary Club of Noosa Heads, and is made possible through the support of local businesses such as Hutchinson Builders.

Smart relief for autistic kids THE reminder that a dog is man’s best friend comes so often that it’s easy to forget the power of those words. Slowly, organisations like Smart Pups are teaching us that those words are changing young lives.

The Pomona-based notfor-profit organisation specialises in providing trained service dogs to assist children with special needs.

As more locals learn about Smart Pups and the amazing work they do, the more they marvel at the positive changes that occur between a child and a Smart Pup over time.

One local business decided to give Smart Pups a call to make a donation last week.

They were delighted when not only a few representatives turned up to say thank you, but when some Smart Pups in training came along as well; hearts melted and big smiles appeared.

The Cooroy Community Bank branch of Bendigo Bank handed over $325 from an internal fund-raiser to Janelle and Kylie from Smart Pups last week, and it was hard to get the team back to work after the pups left.

access and they accompany families on shopping trips, outings and even holidays.

The dog becomes an integral part of the recipient family's life," Janelle said.

“We don’t receive any official government funding, so we rely solely on donations, grants and fund-raising activities to operate. That’s why donations just like this one from Bendigo Bank are so valued and so important to us," she added.

On the Grand Final sidelines THE Noosa Tigers Weyba Road home ground became the headquarters for the AFL Grand Final on Saturday 1 October with the bar open and the big screen showing the highly anticipated showdown between the Sydney Swans and the Western Bulldogs.

But the kids were more interested in the rides and petting zoo provided by the club.

There was rock climbing wall, massive slide, jumping castle and petting zoo, plus plenty of balls to kick around.

The rate of robberies across the district decreased by 1.5 per cent in the past year, with a decreased rate of 20.6 per cent over the past 10 years, while armed robbery offences fell by 14.2 per cent in the 2015/2016 period.

“There were 49 reported robberies in the year 2015/2016, compared to 52 in 2006/2007,” Superintendent Johnson said.

The number of assaults across the district fell by 75 in the past year with a decreased rate of 11.7 per cent.

“It is positive to see assaults decline in the district, and I commend our community for the changing of behaviours, especially in our entertainment precincts,” Superintendent Johnson said.

“Anti-social behaviour cannot be accepted and even one incident is still too high, and police will continue to provide a high visibility response at locations where these offences occur.”

LETTERS Fond memories LAST November, my gorgeous big sister Val passed away at Katie Rose Cottage, during a brief re-opening of the facility. Staff and volunteers alike were amazing.

Some 51 weeks earlier, my partner Jim, passed away at home after a long battle with cancer.

He had been a volunteer gardener at Katie Rose Cottage during his illness, and along with all the volunteers, whether at the cottage, or in the shops, gave selflessly to make sure the dying had somewhere beautiful to pass in peace.

Six years earlier, Sue Story and Terry ClarkBurrows, co-founders, visited the Viridian construction site at Noosa Heads and I, along with many others, volunteered running raffles and sausage sizzles on-site to support their dream of a home-like environment for people to die with dignity.

Fast forward to the news article dated 30 September 2016 when Dr Frank Lewins publicly stated about volunteers of Op Shops around the coast: “They withdrew their services and have cost us a lot of money and yet they want to be a part of it?" Yes, we all want to be part of it Frank. We have invested time and money to keep Katie Rose Cottage functioning, but it seems that you and the board have a different agenda. Where is the $100,000 that Queensland Health gave the Board late last year to keep Katie Rose Cottage operating?

What were the conditions of that donation? Has it been siphoned off into a Building Fund (as stated by Dr Castledine in an earlier letter to the editor), along with thousands of dollars of donations without donors knowing the intent?

Your words “If they have a grievance, they can contact us". Very funny. Communication is not one of your strong points - I have unanswered emails to prove it (as do others) and a letter approving my membership took two months to get from Maroochydore to Cooroy Post Office.

Do the decent thing and stand down, along with the board. There is still a large, committed group of people willing to work towards the common goal of getting the Sunshine Coast Community Hospice doors open again. Let them do it with transparency and vigour and

The real culprits IT SURPRISES me that blame for the mess at the old Noosa Bowls Club has been put entirely on backpackers. This is not the type of behaviour perpetrated by backpackers, who are mostly decent people who do not have a lot of money but a desire to see the world. To me it looks more like the work of teenage vandals on a rampage. Unfortunately backpackers, as they do, have found a free parking spot and the mess must be theirs, sad.

People seem to be very put-out by anyone getting a free night and the backpackers are always the target. Noosa encourages visitors but wants to choose who is most desirable. Backpackers add to the young, happy feel of Noosa and should be encouraged to cheer the place up. They spend their money too - it may not be in top diners, but they do eat.

I wonder who investigated the noise and if it was so bad, why not call the police? It all sounds picky to me. I also noted that the tops were neatly on the bottles which were “strewn around”.

Plain old petty THE criticism by the Prime Minister and Deputy Prime Minister on renewable energy being the reason for the South Australian loss of power during recent atrocious weather just shows how petty-minded one political party will go to score points over another. Koala pain EACH day I open the paper to more bad news about our area’s koalas. Each day, I see that our local, state and federal governments are doing nothing but talk about what we can do to save this iconic species.

Two cases in point. With Main Roads building the Cooroy to Curra bypass through Noosa Shire, the Noosa Council were given the choice to really make a difference through environmental offset legislation passed last November.

The council had the option to expand and protect existing habitat or to plant new trees. What did Noosa Council do? The results are visible along the road as you drive north to Gympie.

The tube stock on steep hillsides alongside the motorway will, perhaps, provide habitat for koalas in about 20 years. If any koalas are still around then, that is.

More recently, our local member Glen Elmes was also given the opportunity to act for the koalas. It is widely known that one of the

He votes AGAINST the Vegetation Management (Reinstatement) and Other Legislation Amendment Bill (VMROLA) and is quoted as saying “If he (Mr Shlegeris) is trying to suggest I should cross the floor ... to be allied with the silly Green movement or the silly Green party then he is sadly mistaken.”

Apparently our local member thinks that stopping habitat destruction is silly.

Richard Branson, however, says he feels ‘compelled to act’ and is declaring Makepeace Island a Koala Refuge. Why does it take a billionaire from another country to do what our elected representatives refuse to? The time for talking is over. We know what needs to be done to protect our koalas. What we need now is government at all levels with the courage and foresight to act.

Rose Cottage is a household name recognised coast wide. Katie Rose Cottage is the name carefully and lovingly chosen by the people who commenced operations of the original unique hospice.

The Katie Rose Cottage Committee was only formed recently when it became clear that the current board of Sunshine Hospice Ltd was not interested in re-opening the hospice because it was all too hard! Meetings were suggested but not supported by the board.

It is very sad that a sensible compromise has not yet been achieved - the hospice does not belong to the board, they are elected to manage it for the benefit of the community.

Maybe building another brand-new facility sometime in the future to operate in conjunction with Katie Rose Cottage could have some merit, but the community needs and wants an operational hospice now!

He’s misinformed

No consultation

DR CASTLEDINE (Noosa Today, 22 September) should explain his area of expertise as he seems totally misinformed regarding Katie Rose Cottage. He appears to support the decision by the current board of Sunshine Hospice Ltd to close and not re-open the hospice.

This board was indeed elected in 2011 to manage the hospice and they have failed. They have proved inadequate in management - if you do not manage the cash flow, you are not managing! The board members should all resign immediately.

Dr Castledine refers to the name “Katie Rose Cottage“ as unimportant and not formally adopted and yet this same board has used this name for promotions, literature, on vehicles, op-shop windows and website for years. Katie

WITH regard to the few letters in support of the Sunshine Hospice board and their agenda, I believe the following points should be made.

Firstly, the main complaint never brought up is that at no time have the financial members, volunteers or the community been consulted as to the proposed future direction of the hospice.

The board have done this unilaterally, whereas the volunteers are raising funds and the community are the ones losing out. Secondly, the hospice has always been known as Katie Rose Cottage and always will be; the analogy is similar to Suncorp Stadium always being known as Lang Park!

Glasses raised for a cure NEIL and Patti Smith, of Noosa Springs, hosted a cocktail party last week to raise funds for the Cindy Mackenzie Breast Cancer Program, a local program supporting Sunshine Coast women and families affected by breast cancer.

Held on Thursday 23 September, the event raised over $4500 in aid of breast cancer research.

The evening was attended by 70 Noosa residents who generously donated towards the worthy cause.

Climate call THE hamburger was neither invented in Hamburg; nor does it contain ham. John Turner (Letters, 22 September) denies the greenhouse effect, apparently because there are no “physical barriers to prevent air warmed by contact with the surface from rising and cooling”.

It is apparent that John’s scientific education in this area is lacking - and, as a community, we should not ‘look down’ on John and other similar thinkers, but rather we should look at our communities and education systems and ask how, in 2016, can someone be so ill-informed?

Of course, it doesn’t help that John states his claims as fact - which I’m sure will lead others to ponder if this has something to do with that “glass ceiling” they’d heard so much about? Energy from the sun, in the form of light of various wavelengths, travels through the atmosphere and warms the earth’s surface.

Different gases in the atmosphere reflect the energy, absorb the energy, or let it pass through.

The majority of the energy hits the earth’s surface and warms it up. We know this to be fact - stand in the garden on a sunny day!

Some of the energy warming the Earth is reflected - mainly infra-red (if you have access to some night vision goggles you can see this late evening when the land will be ‘glowing’).

It just happens that there are certain molecules of gas that readily absorb or reflect infra-red radiation. These molecules have jointly become known as “greenhouse gases” and include carbon dioxide and water (e.g. clouds).

When molecules absorb the infra-red, they warm up, and then, in turn, re-emit infra-red (in a similar way to the way the Earth was warmed and so emitted infra-red). This re-emitted infrared radiation travels in all directions - so some will leave the earth and go off into space, but 50 per cent will be directed out and down - to either hit the surface (and so start a repeat of the cycle) or be absorbed by other molecules that, in turn, re-emit.

I suggest Mr Turner, and any other readers who are confused, simply ignore the name of the effect (i.e. greenhouse) and refer to it as the Fourier effect - Joseph Fourier being the first to describe what we now know as the greenhouse effect in 1820 - and do a little scientific

investigation; their gain in knowledge and understanding can only be a good thing.

Nothing fishy Your “Sport Today" article by Jack Mangrove (Noosa Today, 29 September) is a brilliant article and should be compulsory reading for those involved in the Noosa ratepayer funded “bring back the fish scam".

Thankyou Jack Mangrove for your great photo also showing a nice trevally from the Noosa river with Mr Stann Anderson. That’s a nice fish Stann. Photos don’t lie Michael. There isn’t much Jack has missed here, we have quality whiting from dogs beach and up Gympie Terrace, plus good quality flathead up the river and lovely whiting along the gutters of Noosa north shore.

Our in shore reefs are producing trout and sweetlip and other species. With all this one wonders why Noosa Council will waste our rate dollar on a nonsensical scientific study to bring back the fish when the fish are obviously already there.

May I suggest to Jack “that he keep all these articles for proof to contest the restrictions in fishing times and areas which is about to raise its evil head to impact upon both recreational and commercial sectors by the “bring back the fish Noosa ratepayer funded project.” One wonders.

Never surrender I’M USED to climate deniers sinking to murky depths in their twisting of the facts, but Woody Dass’s deplorable attack on Steve Hall (NT, 22 September) takes the cake. Mr Dass asserts that Steve “preaches” to his students and asks us to “imagine the distain (sic) Mr Hall would unleash if one of his students dared to raise questions”. Such attempts at character assassination do not deserve a place in a newspaper.

The sad thing is that Mr Dass has completely fabricated scenarios to discredit Steve. He could easily seek out some of the thousands of students on the Sunshine Coast who have been inspired by Steve’s teaching over the years.

They would tell him that nothing could be further from the truth. I’ve seen Steve teach. No-

one respects his students more or stimulates their inquiry skills better. There is no way he would ever treat a student with disdain.

If I were Steve, I’d be asking for an apology. It’s one thing to disagree forcefully with an opinion and quite another to contrive a damaging fictional picture of the person who proposes it. I know climate deniers are desperate for ammunition, but low acts of invective like this are not acceptable.

How rude WHAT would you think if someone walked in off the street and started telling you that you didn’t know anything about your business or the job you have done for years? Who would claim that auto mechanics generally have no idea of how cars work or that baristas can’t brew coffee or that accountants have ledgers all wrong or that doctors don’t know anything about disease? Would you ignore the red light on the dashboard of your car because you know there is a conspiracy to make you stop when you don’t want to?

Then what should we make of these arrogant global warming deniers who profess to know more than the world’s best and most experienced scientists? Whoa! Do you think those thousands of climate and atmospheric scientists somehow forgot to consider the geological history of warming on the planet or the cycles of the sun or the southern oscillation, or that they misunderstood the greenhouse effect when they made their predictions that our Earth will continue to warm, to our detriment, as long as we keep pumping in CO2?

Do you suppose that these experienced scientists from all over the world need to be lectured by John Turner on quantum physics? Perhaps Woody Dass can take time out from his surfing and coffees on the beach to lecture the world experts on natural causes of global warming. The scientists would be so impressed. Colin Bond could teach us all a thing or two about cliched put-downs and, oh, A. McCall, Uranus is still in Pisces. Just consult a real star chart.

Benefits remain elusive ON 7 January (Noosa Today) I wrote “What Biosphere benefits" - can anyone in this shire brag about one single solitary benefit (as a ratepayer, resident and businessman) they have received as being part of this so-called Biosphere. I got a couple of wishy-washy, green and fuzzy, fairytale type answers from Tony Wellington and John Horn about increases in tourism (tourism looks after itself because our pioneers, fishing families and timber cutters knew not to kill the river and bush - to keep it for their kids and grandkids to be able to work and make a living out of - has nothing to do with these Johnny come lately NPA heroes and Greens - the Noosa pioneering families stopped high rise and set the pace for Noosa being Noosa) yet I’ll bet if you ask any tourist that comes to Noosa they will not even know what a Biosphere is - if you ask the average person in the street - they will not have a clue.

What has happened to Dick Barnes and his so-called NBCA? What happened to the 10 grand his committee was given to spend? What happened to the hare-brained street parties?

The Noosa Biosphere Reserve Foundation (NBRF) has received as of Dec 2015, significant grants from the Noosa Environment Levy.

Some $180,000 was given for operational expenses, a further $4,413,304 for project funding and a request for a further $360,000 for project funding fro the years 2016-’17 and 2017-’18.

Mind you when I was on council the environment levy was set up to buy environmentally sensitive land under threat of development.

To date there is no transparency, accountability or detailed plans how these community funds will be expended, nor keypoint indicators to ensure efficient timely outcomes. Measurement of project outcomes yet to be stated.

Given the amount of community funds given to the NBRF, it is not unreasonable that the community be fully informed of how THEIR money will be spent and what outcomes have or can be achieved. Noosa Council prides itself on openness and transparency and yet it has a closed door meeting every session and has more closed meetings than the Sunshine Coast Council who we desperately had to break away from. What have they got to hide?

Get set for a sea of pink ONE in eight women will be diagnosed with breast cancer in their lifetime, while eight women will die from the disease every day in Australia.

But through fund-raising for research and education campaigns, the National Breast Cancer Foundation (NBCF) is working towards a goal of zero deaths from breast cancer by 2030.

With the month of October dedicated to raising awareness of breast cancer, raising funds for research and encouraging women to regularly check their breasts, now is the time to get involved with local fund-raising events.

Noosa’s main breast cancer event is the Bic Sup Paddle in Pink, where hundreds of paddlers turn Noosa Sound into a sea of pink on Sunday 16 October to raise funds for the NBCF. Event organisers expect over 500 paddlers to take part this year with anyone and anything that floats welcome to take part in the day.

THEY paddle to the beat of their own drum and this year the Sunshine Coast Dragons Abreast Pink Sea Serpent team will bring their tune to the Bic Sup Paddle in Pink.

The annual event turns Noosa Sound into a sea of pink as hundreds of paddlers take to the water, but this year there will be a special team joining the great event on Sunday 16 October.

The Pink Sea Serpents are a group of breast cancer survivors who decided to jump into a dragon boat to help improve their health and make new friends.

Sunshine Coast Dragons Abreast vice-president Del Mears has been a sea serpent since 2007 and said the fun, fitness and sisterhood of the dragon boat is what brings her back time and time again.

“It’s all about the comradery,” she said. “We are all survivors and we have all been through the journey. We enjoy the sisterhood of paddling together and we have so much fun doing it.”

Del said she thanks sports medicine physician Dr Don McKenzie for his leading studies on the benefits of upper-body exercise for breast cancer survivors in 1996, which eventually led to the establishment of the Dragons Abreast group.

Dr McKenzie ran a sixmonth trial to see if paddling helped women and men who had undergone treatment for breast cancer. At the end of the trial the women didn’t want to stop paddling and others wanted to join the team.

The findings of the study

The Pink Sea Serpents ready for action on the water. showed that paddlers experienced a marked improvement in both physical and psychological health.

Pink Sea Serpent team member Jenny said it was important to remember that while a man or woman was being treated for breast cancer, they are constantly “organised and managed” with medical appointments but then suddenly the treatment is finished and there can be a feeling of uncertainty.

“Many wonder what happens now? Will I be able to do the things I want to do? Will I be OK?” she said.

“This is where Dragons Abreast comes in. The ladies in the Dragons Abreast group have been there and done that and know how the new person is feeling.

“The coaches all know you can’t have a group of ladies sitting together in a boat in silence, but what they are doing is checking how all their friends are going, how they are feeling, what is happening to them, giving words of advice to someone who is struggling. That is, they are supporting each other.

“Even the ladies who are non- breast cancer sufferers,

who are the group’s paddlersupporters, get in on the action and show empathy.”

Here is a quote from Don Mackenzie in “A Dragon’s Tale” – a book about the beginnings of Dragons Abreast in Australia: The Pink Sea Serpents got their first boat in 2005 with thanks to the Caloundra Zonta group.

“None of us had paddled together – we looked a motley crew, all paddling in no special order. It took a while to learn to keep together and how to lean forward and fill our paddle so we moved in unison. But we did it,” Jenny said.

The team now compete in competitions are paddle weekly to keep up their fitness.

“It is really exhilarating when you race. It’s hard to explain the tremendous feeling of the team acting as one and flying through the water – you need to have a try to see what it is like,” Jenny said.

“In 2018 we hope to take a full team of 22 women to Florence to take part in the next World Pink Dragon Boat Regatta.”

Actively involved in good health IT’S well known that women who exercise regularly after a breast cancer diagnosis have better health outcomes, including higher rates of survival.

Unfortunately, few breast cancer patients actually do enough physical exercise to achieve these benefits.

Research in this field has demonstrated physical activity during and following breast cancer treatment is safe and effective, but it’s an ongoing challenging knowing how to best help women to get started on a fitness regime and then keep it up.

NBCF-funded researcher Brigid Lynch from Cancer Council Victoria said there can be many reasons why women who have had breast cancer might avoid extra physical activity, such as having low fitness levels or feeling fatigued easily.

“Knowing this, we still want to encourage them to get out and about as often as possible to optimise health outcomes,” Dr Lynch said.

“Heath care teams need the tools and knowledge to provide strategies that will help these women do some activity even when they really don’t feel like it.”

Dr Lynch said she believed the rise of wearable technology (‘wearables’) such as Apple watches, Fitbits and Garmin devices which collected and analysed data on the physical activity of the wearer, may hold the answer.

Dr Lynch said she sees great potential to harness the popularity of wearables to facilitate behaviour change amongst breast cancer survivors.

“One of the most appealing aspects is that each device is relatively inexpensive and can be used almost anywhere – there aren’t really any social or geographical barriers to the use of wearables,” she said.

Healthcare professionals are already beginning to tap into the potential power of the burgeoning wearables industry, particularly for people with chronic condi-

tions – a move that has generated excitement among many health experts although not everyone is convinced.

Currently the capacity of wearables to create sustainable behavioural changes, either alone or as part of a broader intervention approach, is unknown and unsupported by reliable data.

Dr Lynch aims to fill this knowledge gap by undertaking a trial to measure the impact of wearables on the outcomes for women after completing breast cancer treatment – information that will underpin the decisions of healthcare professionals recommending their use.

The ACTIVATE Trial will test whether using wearables can increase physical activity and reduce the amount of time spent sitting by women who have undergone treatment for breast cancer.

In the meantime, there are a range of breast cancer survivor exercise programs throughout the Noosa Shire and Sunshine Coast such as the paddle board group at Boardwalk Boat Hire.

Anyone seeking upper-body exercise can take part in the Boardwalk Boat Hire Wednesday morning paddle that heads out from the jetty behind the Sofitel Hotel, Noosa Heads, at 7am.

Anyone who is a breast cancer survivor and has been given the OK by their doctor can take part in the free stand-up paddle board and kayak activity each week along with other breast cancer survivors.

October is a great time to get hands-on with your breasts to learn what to look and feel for.

Checking for signs of lumps WOMEN are urged to get hands on when it comes to checking for lumps and bumps in their breasts and detecting the early signs of breast cancer.

This month HCF has joined with the National Breast Cancer Foundation (NBCF) to launch the Hands On campaign aimed at raising awareness of breast checks and showing people what to look and feel for on and around their breasts.

The HCF and NBCF Hands On campaign will run throughout October’s Breast Cancer Awareness Month and is an education initiative designed specifically to teach Australians what the possible signs of breast cancer feel like to help aid awareness.

Movies of magic AT Heart of Gold film festival, they believe it takes a special kind of storytelling magic to break through to the audience on an emotional level, and they’re all about celebrating films that do just that.

Method 1. Place the lemon juice, 120g of the caster sugar, the vanilla bean, scraped seeds and the blueberries in a small saucepan and bring to a simmer over low heat. Cook for five minutes, and then remove from the heat. Transfer half the cooked blueberries to a bowl to cool. Place the remaining berries in a fine sieve placed over a bowl and press down to extract as much puree as possible. Discard the solids.

Blueberries into mousse – try it at home.

2. Soften the gelatin sheets in cold water for about three minutes, remove from the water and squeeze out any excess liquid. Whisk the gelatin into the warm puree until it has all melted, then refrigerate until cool but not set.

3. Using a kitchen aid or electric beaters, whisk the egg whites and cream of tartar until stiff peaks form. Whisk in the remaining sugar until glossy and the sugar has dissolved.

4. Next, whisk the cream until soft peaks form, and then fold into the cold blueberry puree. Gently fold in the beaten egg whites. Spoon the mousse into a piping bag fitted with a wide nozzle, then pipe into six short styled rocks glasses and refrigerate for at least five hours to set.

5. When ready to serve garnish with berries, and your favourite berry flavoured macaron.

A STUDY by the University of Western Australia of foods labelled ‘gluten-free’ published this week in the Medical Journal of Australia has found some produced overseas do not comply with the Australian standard of ‘no detectable gluten’.

Sensitivity to gluten affects people with coeliac disease (CD) and the impact can vary between patients, with levels in food less than one part-per-million protecting most patients but, despite this, international food codes only require foods labelled ‘gluten-free’ to contain less than 20 ppm gluten.

To find out how much gluten was present in imported GF products, research led by UWA Clinical Professor Geoff Forbes purchased 169 GF-labelled food items manufactured overseas from four retailers in Perth to test them for gluten content.

The countries of origin were in Europe, Asia, and North and South America and the food categories included crackers, bread and biscuits, cereals, flour and grains, condiments and sauces, spices, pasta, drinks and soups and confectionary and snacks.

Gluten was detected in 24, or 14 per cent of the products, but at very low levels in all.

Twenty items had detectable but unquantifiable levels of gluten (less than 1 part per million), and four had quantifiable levels (three with 1.0 ppm and one with 1.1 ppm).

“Our findings have important implications.

Firstly, despite tiny traces of gluten being found in 14 per cent of the foods tested, CD patients can confidently consume GF-products purchased in Australia,” Professor Forbes said.

“Secondly, a marked tightening of international GF standards is readily achievable by industry.”

Professor Forbes said the study also showed that standards in Australia were impractical.

“We recommended that Australian authorities revise the current Australian standard of ‘no detectable gluten’ to ‘one ppm or less’ as it is not practical or reasonable for industry to comply with the current Australian standard,” he said.

President of the California Podiatric Medication Association Carolyn McAloon said feet are the first parts to be affected by nerve issues because they’re the farthest from the heart and spine.

Dr McAloon said. “If the cramps don’t let up, see your doctor for testing to rule out circulation issues or nerve damage.�

Uncontrolled glucose levels in the blood can lead to nerve damage all the way down in the feet which means any cut, sore, or scrape can come and go without them ever being felt and non-healing infections are serious and need medical attention.

Be sure to include feet in regular skin checks for melanomas too.

Hypothyroidism is the most common cause of cold feet.

Enjoying all the highlights MANY of us love to head off on holiday to the mountains ... be it for a ski trip on the snowy peaks somewhere such as Colorado or for a trek or climbing trip in places such as Nepal or the Andes.

It is certainly worth being prepared in advance for the problems which may be encountered when we spend time well above sea-level so that the trip can be enjoyed fully, and health complications can be avoided.

Acute Mountain Sickness (AMS) occurs due to the lower atmospheric pressure at elevation which results in lower concentrations of oxygen in the air we breathe there. AMS can range from a mild presen-

tation resembling a “hangover“ ( headache, nausea, fatigue) to the more severe HAPE (High Altitude Pulmonary Oedema) or HACE (High Altitude Cerebral Oedema) with extreme breathlessness, confusion, loss of balance and coma.

These complications can

be avoided by taking time to acclimatise. The altitude at which you climb to and (most importantly) sleep at each night should only gradually be increased. For some people there can be a role for medication to prevent or treat AMS such as Acetazolamide or Dexamethasone.

This can be discussed with a detailed itinerary of dates and planned altitudes, taking in to consideration the traveller’s personal medical history, current medications, and previous experience at altitude.

Surf film festival opens

By Hollie Harris THE Noosa Surf Film Festival will be launched tonight at the J for three days of art, live music, good vibes and, of course, films from all around the world.

The program kicks off with an opening event on Thursday 6 October at 6pm which includes a screening of ‘Gathering Dust’ by local legend Jake Donlen and ‘A Day Late and A Dollar Short’- A film by Ben Cregan about an original punk surfer, Dale Egan.

This feature length film includes bonus Super 8 footage and a live set by blues rockers, The Desert Sea from Sydney.

NSFF will back up last year’s sold out event with five awesome screenings including more than 20 films from 13 countries.

Spectators can enjoy documentaries, narratives, experimental, shorts and feature films such as the NSFF16 Art Show opens tonight which includes artists from Noosa and abroad.

All pieces will be for sale and artists include Matt Cuddihy, Kane Brown, Amanda Lewis, Matthew Wigglesworth, Aaron Godina and Jake Donlen.

Live music sets by Shannon Sol Carroll from Band of Frequencies and The Desert Sea tonight, Zac Gunthorpe and FELIVAND with Rhian Cruice on Friday night and Jesse Taylor on Saturday night.

THE mate from Los Angeles was in town last weekend on a flying visit for a birthday party. This mate has his finger in so many pies that he can never plan ahead, so it was very short notice when I tried to book him a hotel, however I got lucky and found a spacious penthouse suite on the river.

I was in Sydney when he arrived, so fortunately I couldn’t hear the shrieks when he was told that the lift had had the fritz and he would have to negotiate five flights of stairs. Six, actually, if you used the basement car park. Now the mate is a bit older than me, which makes him quite old, and he has a dicky leg, so this was quite a predicament.

The manager offered to refund his money, but Noosa was pretty much full for Queen’s Birthday Weekend, and the mate, having staggered up the stairs once, had fallen in love with the stunning 180-degree view of river and beach. So the decision was made. He would stay and tough it out, with a little help from his friends.

His daughter and her boyfriend flew up from Melbourne, we raced home and checked into the third bedroom. We did all the grunt work – charging down for supplies, staggering back up – while the mate sat in comfort and viewed the world through binoculars from his lofty heights. We did everything but piggyback the old bugger. Despite this, we had a wonderful few days, catching up and laughing uproariously at silly little jokes and one-liners, which has always been our way.

Now, I concede that there’s not a lot you can do when the one and only lift servicing the penthouse breaks down on the eve of a holiday weekend, but in a high-end joint like this where you don’t get much change out of a thousand bucks a night, I would have thought that a small discount might have been appropriate, rather than a bottle of cheap bubbly and a few chocolates. None was offered.

Then there was the small matter of the out-of-order spa, and the fact that all the water toys were in a lockup cage and whoever had the key wouldn’t be back until Tuesday. On departure day a note under the door told us to be out by 9.30am and to clean up the place and empty the rubbish.

I know, picky, picky, picky. But

Our international stocks have never been higher, but if you want to be regarded as a world class resort village, you have to work at it. The mate took it all in good spirit, but as he left for the airport, he did say: “Wouldn’t happen in America”.

I agree.

Tim Winton lets a few rip IT WAS great to catch up with author Tim Winton at his full-house Riverdeck lunch at Noosa Marina on Monday, the first stop on a gruelling 23-gig tour promoting his memoir, The Boy Behind The Curtain.

Thirty five years ago, when I was editing a dreadful rag called Australian Penthouse, a literary agent took me to lunch and gave me a handful of short stories written by some of her young clients. I read them over a weekend and, to be honest, didn’t think much of them until the last one, a story called “My Father’s Axe”, which I agreed to publish. I told the agent: “This kid is a born storyteller.

He’s probably got a book in him.”

Well, it turned out Tim Winton had quite a few in him – 28 not out so far, many of them Australian literary classics. Sharing a passion for surfing and writing, Tim and I have caught up here and there over the years, notably on the 1990 Queensland Writers’ Train, when

he had a room full of Charleville schoolkids in hysterics with a story about a bum bandit. I was pleased to see that, despite becoming a literary legend, Tim hasn’t lost his love of a good fart joke. He let a few rip for the ladies who lunch the other day, and they loved it. Frenchies on fire in Cascais.

Last week I mentioned how great it was to see French surfing get a huge lift by taking out the World Juniors in the Azores. Well, the roll continued this week at the Billabong

Pro in Cascais, Portugal, with Jeremy Flores unlucky to be pipped in the final by Brazil’s Jesse Mendes, while Joan Duru continued his stunning QS form with a fifth place finish.

Flores has been having an absolute shocker on the championship tour, with four last places seeing him labouring at 31 in the rankings, with little hope of requalifying.

But his second in Portugal has shot him into sixth place on the qualifying tour, with a very good chance

to get back into the main game through the back door.

He looks certain to be joined on tour by beach-mate Joan Duru, who is now sitting at number three on the qualifying tour. It’s been a tough road for Joan, who, like Jeremy, was a hot Quiksilver junior a dozen years ago when Gary “Kong” Elkerton and I used to squire them around Europe to compete. Now, at 27, he gets his chance to shine. And he’s got a wildcard into this week’s Quik Pro France. Allez, Joan!

IT HAS been another big weekend with big crowds, great weather and safe conditions with no major incidents reported by lifesavers.

Lifeguards who worked Sunrise Beach and Peregian Beach also reported big crowds and great conditions.

At Sunshine Beach officials were kept busy watching a total of 20 senior Nippers gaining their Surf Rescue Certificate (SRC).

Club captain Scott Summers said: “This number of SRCs being gained is good for it enables us to roster them on to the patrols, and this makes things better for the patrol captains. Also IRB training is still ongoing; we still have joint training sessions with Noosa, and this is a

great concept having the two clubs working together”.

However, he then went on to stress the importance of members joining the IRB teams.

“The work being done by these lifesavers is of the utmost importance. With roving patrols being on the increase there is an urgent need for more members to come forward into the ranks.”

Over the hill at Noosa the message is the same.

Training team member Chris Grandemange said: “We desperately need more members to get their IRB certificates. In about three week another four will qualify, with two being from Noosa and two from Sunshine. Another team of eight is ready to start basic training and regarding this team, all are from Noosa; but both our clubs are always on the lookout for more members to do these courses”.

Despite members being heavily

involved with patrolling and training, Sunshine is still finding the time to make definite plans for the future.

“For us, our big goal is to commence a major rebuilding and renovation of our clubhouse in February 2018," Scott said. “This will be a big step in the right direction, but it will take a lot of planning and organisation; but already things are slowly starting to happen.”

Like all volunteer organisations, Sunshine Beach is ever willing to meet and talk to any business people regarding sponsorship. Just give them a call or drop into the supporters club and say hello. You will be most welcome.

Speaking of renovations, the management of Noosa Supporters Club, commonly referred to as the Surf Club, is well and truly on the way with discussions being held with council and architects. If the current plans are any indication, the future definitely looks good for a brighter

facelift. Good luck to both clubs with these projects.

While on the matter of our supporter clubs, the management and staff of both wish to pass on their thanks to all who visited their clubs during the school holidays. Their support is of the utmost importance.

On the weekend, teams from Noosa and Sunshine travelled to Mermaid Beach on the Gold Coast to contest the State Endurance Championships - and to start the season competition well both clubs came home with medals. Add to this Noosa was named as overall top club for the carnival.

There were many great performances and among those the boys' swim team from Noosa - the under15s through to the opens - were outstanding. Swimming for Noosa, Jayden Morrow won the under-15, Cooper Williams the under-17 and Bailey Williams made it a double by winning both the under-19 and

the open. For the ladies, Lana Rogers won the opens and Electra Outram finished in second place in the under-17.

For Sunshine Beach, Matt Lewis and Hayley Lewis won the under-12 swims, and Olivia Emanuel the under-17 paddle. A silver medal to Max Moore finishing second in the under-15 board, and the bronze medals to Francesca McKinley under-13 swim, Abby Tolarno under-13 paddle and Mia Smallman under-17 swim.

There were many other promising performances in both teams, so it definitely looks good for the coming season. Noosa members are reminded of the Old Boys annual general meeting at 3pm Saturday followed by a reunion barbecue.

Then Sunday club council meeting at Peregian, at 10am. This is a big one so all members are called upon to attend.

Perfect conditions to hit the water

By Jack Mangrove WITH the great conditions we have been having, it’s hard to leave the boat sitting in the shed.

Offshore, good sweetlip have been caught in numbers around Jew Shoal and Sunshine Reef with the odd snapper among them.

Micro-jigging has been the way to attract a nice reefies with the new Colt Sniper Range from Shimano a real hit.

These jigs come in a range of colors and weights and are perfect for the shallower reefs.

Cobia have been on the chew, with some great fish caught on North Reef – the pilchard floater method has been the most productive, with a run to the outer reefs on the cards.

The reefs up towards Double Island have really been producing, with good sized snapper, Pearlies, red emperor and cobia all hitting the decks.

Fishing the Hards and the Barwon Banks has also been productive with some larger pearlies, trag jew snapper, cobia and cod.

The Noosa River mouth has really turned it on this week with everything from school jew, bream, trevally and also big flathead all feeding on bait fish as it is brought in on the run-in tide.

Big whiting have been going off around the Dog Beach and Frying Pan – small poppers and live nippers have proven really successful in landing these bigger fish.

Early morning starts, up in the Tewantin Ski Run has proved to be worthwhile for trevally, bream and flathead, with prawns in the river – a lot of the these fish have been falling victim to a slow rolled Zerek Hot Legs live Shrimp.

Further up river between the lakes has been the spot to be for large bream, jacks and school jew, live baits and trolling hardbodies lures have been coming up with the goods.

Also casting around the snags has seen good jacks caught over the past week.

Pacey and Grace Bauer with a good feed of whiting.

Fishing these areas can see a few lures left behind, so make sure your drag is up tight as the fish will have you back in the snags before you know it.

A good idea is to have a lure retriever on board to help recover some of those expensive lures.

The Noosa Northshore beaches have been fishing particularly well, with whiting, bream, dart and flathead out of the first cutting and towards the mouth – worms, pippies and small pillies have proven the best baits for them.

Tailor are still getting caught between Teewah and Double Island as they make their way south after spawning at Fraser Island.

Pilchards have been the bait of choice; fresh mullet has also gotten the job done.

In the fresh water, bass are in good numbers in both Lake Macdonald and Lake Borumba – fishing soft plastics on heaver jig heads has been a great way to tangle with a nice bass.

Remember to make sure you have your fishing permit to fish the fresh water lakes.

Back on the ball for ’em all THE wait is over and softball is underway this weekend at Noosa – with the new season starting Saturday morning for the kids and after lunch for the adults.

If you would like to play or see what it’s about come on down to the Noosa sports complex on Butler Street and have a look – remember, softball is for all ages.

Last weekend saw the under-19 titles at Redcliffe and the Noosa FNQ

girls team make it through to the grand final only to go down to Redlands in a great battle 4-2.

Shinai Gibbons was rewarded for her efforts with selection in the Queensland under-19 team.

Shinai and Fraser also played in the team and had good tournaments, to go with her 17s selection two weeks ago.

Riley Murrihy played for Redcliffe in the boys and also lost the grand

final 8-6 against Redland, while William Todd played for Caboolture. Both boys hit home runs and Shinai hit two autos.

It’s been a big two weeks for the Noosa players playing in two tournaments over six days and training in between.

Fun night for funds sport THE Noosa Boardriders Club congratulates young members who competed at the Kirra Junior teams challenge and shout out to the community about their Big Wednesday fundraiser coming up next week.

The girls who represented the club at Kirra came home with a second and the boys sixth, which are the club's best results in this event.

The kids that represented the club did so with great sportsmanship and team spirit.

These events cost the club around $2500 and events like the upcoming Big Wednesday fund-raiser help pay for these.

With the senior club having both the Straddie Assault and the Board Riders Battle coming up they are working hard to raise similar funds by hosting a get together on Wednesday 12 October at El Capitano on hastings Street.

This Big Wednesday is a fund-raiser and fun-raiser where $25 gets your first drink, plenty of great pizza and a night of music and laughs.

Noosa Boardriders Club is almost 50 years old and currently has over 80 junior members and 30 plus senior members, so they have plenty to celebrate.

There are some fantastic items up for auction on the night including two nights accommodation at Noosa Crest, massage packages, movie tickets, coffee machine package, Riverside beauty products, Harry Mark photography sessions and much more.

The club really need support to raise funds and make this event a success so they are asking the community to buy a ticket, donate to the auction, or for those who can’t attend they would happily accept the $25 ticket price as a donation.

Skilfully done NOOSA Netball will be holding two very special representative netball development sessions for all players wishing to trial for Noosa in the 2017 season. The sessions will be held at the Tewantin courts on Saturdays 8 and 15 October, from 8.30am to 10.30am. Players must be turning 12 years of age in 2017.

There is a fantastic guest presenter, Paul Elbourn. Paul will be taking participants through a series of drills and giving plenty of tips and ideas to improve those netball skills. Paul has played for Queensland and Australia in both indoor and outdoor netball for a number of years.

In 2014 he represented Australia in the mens World Cup, beating Jamaica in the final. He has a wealth of knowledge and experience and the club is privileged that he wants to share with the club and with players.

While these sessions are not compulsory for those wishing to trial for representative teams, it would certainly be advantageous to have this high level of coaching in preparation for representative trials. Coaches are more than welcome to come along, watch and pick up some tips to take back to clubs or school teams.

Quick hands take the pride of the Irish

By Ron Lane THE Irish made two sweeping statements. The first was big headlines in a local paper – The Aussies Are In Town. And the second and best of all – The Celtic Cup Goes Down Under.

First statement was to give the Queensland Amateur Boxing Team, a huge warm welcome to Ireland; there to take part in the big international boxing tournament, the Celtic Cup. Next was to tell us that the Queensland Team won the coveted trophy by finishing the tournament with a total of five gold and three silver medals.

To win the tournament, which was held in Dungarvan, Waterford, was outstanding. Add to this they also won a lead-up tournament against the Munster Select Team, five bouts to four.

Proud to say, that two of the outstanding members for Queensland were Taylah Robinson and Tyler Blizzard, who went through both tournaments undefeated. They were just two of the five from the Cooroy Impact Amateur Boxing Club selected to represent their state.

Apart from Queensland receiving the Celtic Cup, both Robertson and Blizzard were presented with magnificent championship belts as winners of their respective divisions.

“When we received the belts we were amazed,” Tyler Blizzard said. “They are unbelievable. To receive trophies like these makes it all worthwhile.”

Needless to say that the Celtic Cup and both Championship Belts are now taking pride of place in the Impact Boxing Academy in their new hometown – Cooroy.

At the completion of both tournaments, so outstanding was the performance of Taylah Robertson that Boxing Australia invited her to stay and travel to Bulgaria to attend an elite women's boxing camp.

Other Impact members of the team Sam Cameron-Hands, Brock Shelly and Luke Martin chalked up wins.

However losses on split decisions left some fighters disappointed.

“These types of decisions are unfortunately part of boxing and we learn to accept it gracefully,” Sam Cameron-Hands said.

Regarding the tournaments, Impact coach and Boxing Queensland president Mark Evans said: “A big shout to Taylah and Tyler on their wins, undefeated throughout the Ireland tour; and a really big shout to Boxing Queensland.

They continually support these kids and give our athletes state wide, the development they need on an international level as well as on home soil. Also the way the team conduct themselves both inside and outside the ring is commendable”.
