By Aneeka Simonis A SECURITY audit was conducted at Pakenham police station after it was subjected to an explosives attack in March, but recommended safety upgrades have not yet been put in place.

Pakenham police Inspector Shane Smith confirmed the station is due to undergo specific security upgrades which aren’t planned for other Victorian police stations.

The comments come in the wake of the station again being firebombed in the early hours of Monday 29 August - two weeks after police discovered attempts had been made to infiltrate a restricted security zone.

A source with close links to local police said they “aren’t too happy” about it, particularly given both police-targeted firebombers have not been caught.

Inspector Smith was unable to go into detail about areas of security concern highlighted in the audit as per Victoria Police policy.

However, he did admit that the proposed security works are yet to take place.

“Things are being reviewed, assessed and looked at,” he said.

“Some works take a long time to get specifications done.”

A Victoria Police spokesperson did not explain why the audit recommendations have not yet been funded, but said some security works have been undertaken.

“Several more upgrades are scheduled to begin shortly, for security reasons it would be inappropriate to go into further detail,” the spokesperson said.

It’s unclear whether the security upgrades already completed relate to recommendations handed down in the March audit or as part of upgrades being made to stations statewide.

Security shutters were installed at Pakenham police station’s front counter less than a week after it was targeted by a firebomb throwing assailant in March this year.

Inspector Smith said improvements pitched for Pakenham police station were specific to security matters identified at the site, unlike uniform state-wide rollouts including the fixture of a security screen at station front counters.

Pakenham police station was fitted with a security screen less than a week after the first firebombing attack at the station in line with Victoria Police’s anti-terror policy.

A lit Molotov cocktail was lobbed at Pakenham station’s front door about 12.50am on Saturday 12 March by a balaclava-wearing offender who police have not yet been able to identify.

In mid-August, attempts were made to infiltrate a security zone at the station.

Security fencing around the perimeter of the station was compromised sometime before 2am on Sunday 14 August when it was discovered by officers.

And most recently, a second firebomb was lobbed at the station from over a back fence.

Police are still searching for the unknown offender who threw the firebomb at the station headquarters at 12.55am on Monday 29 August.

It’s unclear if the non-actioned security upgrades were technological or physical, within the building or protecting the exterior.

A rock solid tribute

By Alana Mitchelson MEMORIAL stones honouring Australian service personnel were unveiled at the Pakenham cenotaph on the weekend.

The Pakenham RSL plans to erect seven stones beside the cenotaph over two stages in recognition of those who have served or fought overseas since World War II. The first three stones represent the Korea, Malaya and Indonesia (Far East Strategic Reserve), and Vietnam wars, while the remainder are expected to be installed by late next year to honour those who served in peace keeping efforts in Somalia, East Timor and Iran, and in the Iraq and Afghanistan wars.

The line of stones will serve as a commemorative walk for service personnel, families of service personnel and the general public to pay their respects.

Military historian Marcus Fielding and Federal Member for McMillan Russell Broadbent were guest speakers at the unveiling ceremony on Sunday 28 August, with speeches from Australian war veterans from each of the three conflicts.

Lunch and refreshments were served following the ceremony at the Pakenham RSL Hall, corner James Street and Snodgrass Street, Pakenham.

Rosie’s right-hand women

By Aneeka Simonis FOUR counsellors were waiting on hand within the audience of a recent Pakenham family violence forum where high-profile survivor Rosie Batty shared her story.

The support workers from Windermere, based in Pakenham, were there in case anyone who attended the three-hour forum felt the courage to speak out about possible abuses happening to them in their home.

Sadly, it’s not too far a stretch to believe women sitting among the crowd had been or were currently being subjected to violence by their partner.

After all, Cardinia Shire has one of the highest rates of family violence reports in Victoria.

All sat still and quiet as they listened to Rosie speak on the loss of her son through family violence at the forum on Monday 29 August.

But her most important message was not in the detail of her tragedy.

It was in the advice she gave to women suffering through violence.

“I know police would say to ring triple zero and report crime.

“But as a victim, I know why that is hard and don’t actually say that is always the first and foremost thing to consider,” she said.

Ms Batty, mother of Luke Batty who was killed by his father at cricket practice in Tyabb in 2014, reached out to a crisis support line years earlier and said it was the “best thing” she could have done.

Before then, years of psychological torment and intimidation didn’t seem like enough to call in police over.

She soon learnt violence came in many forms.

“Sometimes we don’t actually see violence in our relationship for what it is.

“We may not even understand different forms of violence. We actually may be too busy blaming ourselves to really see it the way other people see it,” she said.

“So 1800 RESPECT is a starting point.

From that first step, victims are linked with a trauma informed counsellor or into specialised services in their local area.

“But importantly, that first step is a conversation with someone who is not judging you, criticising you or even blaming you. It’s confidential.

“It’s about understanding that the relationship will never get any better and while there is still hope, there is still an investment that somehow if you stick it out, you could make it work. But without intervention, help and support, it will only get worse. Always.”

After that call to the crisis line, Ms Batty linked in with a support forum. When she arrived, she was surrounded by the faces of many other women experiencing the same violence in their own homes.

What she took from that group strengthened her will to fight.

“It changed me and gave me the power to rebuild my own self-worth. Linking into specialised service is incredibly important.

Sometimes you aren’t an expert on your own safety,” she said.

Ms Batty went on to explain that violence

Rosie Batty gave advice to women on how to safely escape a violent relationship. 157767 could often worsen once a victim left a relationship, and ongoing support was incredibly important for the victim.

“It’s important you have a relationship with the police. Getting an apprehended violence order (AVO) is an important step, but it doesn’t guarantee your safety. You need support.”

Lastly, Ms Batty encouraged victims to find their voice and speak out against violence.

She said the strength used by one victim to speak out might motivate another to escape or, better still, shift attitudes enabling disrespect and violence toward women and girls.

Minister for the Prevention of Family Violence and Minister for Women Fiona Richardson MP, Bass MP Brian Paynter, Dandenong MP Gabrielle Williams and Cardinia Shire Mayor Jodie Owen were among the dignitaries at the forum.

Minister Richardson said victims would, from now, be better protected from violence despite possible changes of government in the future.

Both parties have made a bi-partisan commitment to ending the scourge.

“We need to stop funding crisis over prevention. The government is very good at responding to crisis and harms of family violence, but this is a crime that is entirely preventable,” she said.

“We need to do more to prevent it in the first place so we can drive down these behaviours before they reach the police and the courts.”

Laptops to set youths straight

By Cam Lucadou-Wells AFRI-AUS Care’s efforts to straighten young offenders has been backed by Dandenong MP Gabrielle Williams and Wooranna Park Primary School students.

The volunteer agency helps wayward African youth in Casey and Greater Dandenong to re-connect with their families, studies and work.

Ms Williams had contacted Wooranna Park, which donated two retired laptops on 20 August.

The computers were refurbished and installed with extra software such as Minecraft by some of its tech-minded students.

The laptops will be used by young people to help with

homework under the tutelage of an Afri-Aus Care PhD volunteer.

That was the path of skills, training, employment and a “more constructive life”, Ms Williams said.

“Afri-Aus Care is an important local organisation committed to providing support and assistance to vulnerable young people in and around Dandenong.

“It is pleasing to be able to connect like-minded organisations to work together for the benefit of the Dandenong community.”

Wooranna Park principal Ray Trotter said the school was happy to help because “that’s what we’re in the business for”.

It also offers intensive case management, referrals to legal aid, mental health and drugand-alcohol services and employment support.

It operates without government funding and requires sponsorship.

Afri-Aus Care director Selba Luka said her concern is the difficulty her proteges face in getting work. There are some she knows who have studied and yet can’t rise above factory work.

“You focus on what that kid wants to do. Once they’re confident, they find that next step in their education through alternative education pathways.

“Give them adequate supports to do something and make Australia a better place.”

All-weather surface to bring out their best THE City of Casey has opened its first synthetic-surfaced football and cricket ground.

The synthetic playing surface, at Carlisle Park Recreation Reserve in Cranbourne, was officially opened for play on Thursday 25 August.

The $4.2 million project included the construction of a floodlit synthetic football and cricket oval, two netball courts, cricket practice nets, a sports pavilion and car parking.

The State Government contributed $650,000 towards the dual purpose facility and Sport Minister John Eren was joined by council officials and players at the opening.

Casey Council provided the bulk of funds with $3.52 million and AFL Victoria contributed $50,000 and a further $50,000 through the joint AFL/ Cricket Australia Synthetic Turf Program.

The new facilities include two female-friendly AFL and cricket change rooms, which can also be used as a multi-purpose space, and two dedicated netball change rooms.

The pavilion includes a kitchen, store areas, a scorer’s box, office space, player, umpire, referee and public amenities and covered viewing areas.

The reserve will be home to the Carlisle Park Vikings Cricket Club, youth girl’s football squads, South East Juniors (SEJ) Umpires Association and a number of SEJ representative team squads.

The Cranbourne Carlisle Primary School is also set to make regular use of the facility.

A CRANBOURNE woman with little criminal history told a court she had a compulsion to steal clothes from outlets in Fountain Gate, Frankston, and Chadstone shopping centres.

The 32-year-old pleaded guilty to stealing more than $500 worth of purses, skirts, jumpers and blouses from the shops on four occasions in May, July and August.

She also pleaded to attempting to thieve a drink from a fridge at a Cranbourne shopping centre outlet.

When arrested on warrant at Narre Warren railway station on 28 August, she was wearing a jumper, dress and bangles stolen a few days earlier from Bayside, Dandenong Magistrates’ Court was told.

At the time, the woman was on two corrections orders handed down in November and February for shoplifting. She had no criminal history prior to that.

The accused told the court “I think it’s an addiction to take things from a shop”.

Magistrate Julie O’Donnell said there must be a trigger for the criminal turn.

“It’s unusual for a 32-yearold woman coming before the court now - and not before -

without some reason.”

Ms O’Donnell noted the state psychiatric service Forensicare would not be able to confirm a diagnosis of kleptomania.

A defence lawyer said the accused had no reason or trigger. She had no intention of on-selling the items, the lawyer said.

The accused was back living with an ex-partner from a violent relationship since last August but she had no income or phone number, the lawyer said.

She hadn’t seen her children, who were staying with their grandparents, for up to eight months.

“I don’t know how suitable the Cranbourne address is,” her lawyer said.

“Obviously she does not think it’s suitable enough for her children to live there.”

This contradicted a Department of Corrections report that stated the woman was “essentially homeless”, Ms O’Donnell noted.

Ms O’Donnell said she was reluctant to jail the woman without knowing more about her.

The magistrate deferred sentence for a CREDIT bail assessment on 2 September, with a corrections order further down the track.

ON THURSDAY 25 August your newspaper published a council sponsored advertisement stating that Casey council wants to know what vision residents have for the future of this municipality.

I’m afraid the future in Casey is not looking good.

As the hotel industry and RSL clubs are being allowed to dominate the Casey community by financially exploiting residents with poker machines - machines made to mesmerise and promote gambling addiction.

Casey’s future has now been seriously compromised by the failure of our local councillors and successive mayors to take a stand against a disease that is behind many social and economic problems - poker machine addiction.

In fact, if anything, the number of electronic gaming machines in Casey has increased with little effective opposition from council.

Over the 2014/15 period, poker machine losses amounted to $119 million, an increase of $6.1 million, the second highest losses in Victoria after Brimbank and ahead of Dandenong.

On 26 August the Herald Sun’s Pokies Cash Dodge reveals that pokies venues are now also dodging laws that ban cash machines by allowing gamblers endless cash withdrawals from ATMs. Electronic gaming machines are destroying families in Casey (as they drive up crime rates) while our councillors and mayor can only talk about the need for more police and more 24 hour stations?

When will our councillors and mayor start dealing with the real problem in Casey?

Step in the wrong direction DUE to the current council elections fast approaching in October 2016, I am concerned with the amount of current councillors who are affiliated if not an active member of a political party.

It is my own strong opinion that political parties have no place in councils.

I am aware due to Casey council being my own municipality, that three councillors contested the 2012 state election and I am aware that if they were to be elected as a member of State Parliament they would have to resign their position as City of Casey councillors.

I am sure there would have been more of this behaviour around the state in other councils as well.

Given the next state elections are in 2018, then it is my firm belief that if a person is going to be a candidate for the upcoming council elections they should disclose to the people in their ward what their intentions are for the upcoming state election.

Being voted to represent your ward is an honour and privilege and it should not be purely used as a stepping stone for your own political career.

Soccer tipping point AS A retired soccer referee I have been saying for years that Casey Council don’t give two hoots about soccer clubs in Casey.

Footy will always be number one as per the News of 25 August.

I still go and watch a game on Saturday afternoon and have seen the state of the Fox Road ground after a few days of rain.

It’s a bog hole for cars, also the playing pitch at one end gets water logged.

The same can be said about Hampton Park and Endeavour Hills soccer grounds.

A couple of days hard rain and the grounds are unfit to play on.

I can still remember when Cranbourne Soccer Club used to play near the horse track. Now as Casey Comets they play on top of an old tip.

THE City of Berwick’s first female mayor, Janice Bateman, OAM, died on 24 August aged 81.

Ms Bateman served on the council between 1971 and 1984.

She stood for state parliament twice unsuccessfully, first for the Australian Democrats in the Lower House seat of Dandenong in 1979.

Her second tilt was for the Liberals in the Upper House seat of Eumemmerring in 1988.

She told Star News in 2010 that she’d

tried to “always act with honesty, integrity and compassion” in her 40 years of public life.

She strived for women to step up to make the changes they wanted to see.

“It is so important that as women we accept the right and responsibility to be a part of the decision-making process if we want our world to be a better place.”

Ms Bateman was a former state and national president of the Australian Local Government Women’s Association in 1975-’78.

In 1985 she received the Medal of the Order of Australia for services to the community and local government.

She died at Lyrebird Village, Drouin.

Her funeral was held at St Andrews Uniting Church, Bunyip, on Wednesday 31 August.

A TOORADIN man was keen to get passersby to help push-start his car parked outside Dandenong Magistrates’ Court on 29 August.

A MAN was given some “think time” to reconsider a tasty defence for driving with a mobile phone at Dandenong Magistrates’ Court.

The man, representing himself, had allegedly been spotted by police holding a phone to his ear on two separate occasions within minutes, but claimed to the court he was eating a biscuit.

The man was perhaps wisely given a chance to consult a lawyer.

The program also provides water safety skills, relaxation, social interaction, exercise and improved concentration, improves participants’ mindsets and promotes better quality sleep.

On its Facebook page, Insight thanked North Lodge, the Rotarians, Maurice Gleeson and Blind Sports Victoria for making the program

possible “let alone celebrating our first anniversary of its inception”.

“This program is a powerful example of the importance of providing children who are blind and vision impaired here in Victoria with access to explicit teaching and educational programs that are adapted for them to ensure they have every chance of achieving an independent and successful life now and into the future,” the post said.

BLIND and visually impaired Casey children have celebrated a year of growth and independence with a splash.

North Lodge Swimming Academy in Dandenong partnered with Rotary Club of Dandenong South East last August to deliver the weekly voluntary swimming lessons, individualised for each child.

Berwick school Insight Education Centre for the Blind and Vision Impaired and Blind Sports Victoria also support the project.

“These children came to us as nervous, raw beginners and after a very rewarding year they have transformed into independent swimmers,” the pool’s Leanne Byron said.

“They are performing fantastic torpedos and are now developing freestyle, backstroke and breaststroke with very good technique.”

The head coach and managing director said the swimmers and instructors involved had plenty of fun, too.

“There are always smiles and laughter all around during our swimming sessions,” Ms Byron said.

“We have seen a huge boost in their self-confidence and vibrant personalities.

“Each and every one of us has formed a very special bond.

“Together we have achieved so much. It’s exciting to think about what we will achieve over next year.“ They celebrated the milestone at the pool on Saturday 27 August.

Daughters raise voices

The Christian girls’ ensemble has evolved from a group of teenagers singing around an old piano in a lounge room.

AS the automotive industry grinds to a halt, Hallam manufacturer Ace Wire Works has been forced to mould new markets.

When it comes to new business possibilities, its motto seems to be ‘how long is a piece of wire’.

Once firmly enmeshed as an automotive supply chain company, Ace Wire Works supplied thousands of wire parts for car seats and headrests for Ford, Holden and Toyota.

It now depends on them for just 15-20 per cent of its business.

Managing director Sam Harris said the 62-year-old company was well-placed for the auto industry’s ‘ground zero’ having just prospered in one of its most successful years in 201516. “The downturn in automotive in years past would have been significant but we’ve diversified over the past five to 10 years.�

Its new, growing vistas include designing and making high-end wire furniture, tree guards, commercial oven racks, farm gates and retail display stands.

Mr Harris said its hightech plant with a 40-strong

workforce was still capable of supplying overseas carmakers at a competitive price, but for the high cost of shipping from Australia.

Instead the firm would focus on new markets and invest in new technology and machinery at its Abbott Road factory.

The company has benefited from a $16,000 grant from the State Government to help further develop its transition plan with advice from Pitcher Partners consultant Robert Tigani.

It would help Ace Wire Works not only retain staff but grow the business, Mr Harris said.

Grants of up to $55,000 are available for companies affected by the auto-industry shutdown under the state’s $5 million Automotive Supply Chain Transition Program.

Narre Warren North MP Luke Donnellan, who visited the plant on 19 August, said the funding would help Ace Wire Works identify and target new markets. “We are helping them... put themselves on a strong footing in the future.�

Housing for victims THE City of Casey is home to the largest family violence policing unit, and will soon be home to refuges for women and children escaping abuse.

The Casey region is set to receive eight new homes for women and children seeking a safe haven.

National not-for-profit housing provider, Community Housing Ltd, will provide the homes as part of the State Government’s $50 million ‘Rapid Housing Assistance Fund’.

The funding is part of a ‘housing blitz’ announced by the State Government in response to recommendations made by the Royal Commission into Family Violence.

The housing initiative includes the purchase of 184 social housing properties across the state and up to $1.4 million for head leases of 124 social housing rentals in priority areas.

Community Housing Ltd Victorian manager Shari McPhail said the City of Casey alone had experienced a 65 per cent increase in the number of re-

ported cases of family violence from 2010 to 2014.

“This much-needed funding will provide additional safe, secure and affordable homes for women and their children who have experienced family violence or have become homeless as a result,” Ms McPhail said.

“The properties and will be located in close proximity to public transport and schools to ensure the tenants maintain their links to the local services and community.”

The eight homes are set to be avail-

able in Casey by the end of 2016.

Ms McPhail said Community Housing Ltd had obtained funds to secure premises in Latrobe city and East Gippsland.

The housing provider has partnered with Windermere Family Services to provide support and individualised assistance to the tenants.

“Safe and affordable housing is the key to stabilising the lives of those most vulnerable specially women and children, from which they can begin to rebuild their lives,” she said.

Milk’s back on the school menu SCHOOL breakfast menus around the state will be served up local dairy products in a bid to support embattled industry farmers.

The Pactum Dairy Group in Shepparton will exclusively supply milk to the Victorian Government’s ‘School Breakfast Clubs’ program from 2017.

The program currently provides students with free breakfasts at several local schools, including Hampton Park Primary School, River Gum Primary School, Coral Park Primary School, Kilberry Valley Primary School and Narre Warren South P-12 College.

The new deal will see dairy farmers in the Murray Goulburn region supply around 400,000 litres of milk a year to the program, benefiting the 130 farms in the

district who supply Pactum Dairy.

Australia grown baked beans will also be on the menu from next year with SPC Ardmona in Shepparton suppling 80 tonnes of baked beans for the program.

The SPC Ardmona factory employs 500 people and supports up to 2700 grower and supplier jobs.

Deputy Premier James Merlino said one in seven Victorian children arrived at school on an empty stomach, which affected their ability to concentrate and learn.

“We’re tackling disadvantage through School Breakfast Clubs by making sure every student has the opportunity to reach their potential - and by using Victorian dairy and food suppliers we can also help boost jobs and industry,” he said.

Fishing is good

“I went down there with a fishing pole because I just wanted to see what was under that water,” he said.

“I couldn’t physically see the fish unless I actually caught them.

“I became a fishing text book guru.”

He caught his first fish on a school camp, made friends with a neighbour with a boat, and joined Cranbourne Angling Club.

There he met a guy with plans to open a tackle shop

and volunteered to help him set up.

Mr Worsteling bought the business on 9 September 1996, aged 22.

To build its profile he wrote articles for fishing magazines, gave fishing reports on radio and offered fishing guru Rex Hunt advice.

In 2000 Mr Worsteling organised a fish trip for Rex’s Fishing Adventures television program. It was the start of a four-year stint on the show.

“It definitely brought

Youth Enterprise Award nominee Brooke Fernandez.

“I like my work to send a message to an audience,” she said.

Her projects have covered social issues such as body image.

“Through my work I aim to promote social acceptance,” she said.

“I want to create works that make a difference.”

Teacher Robin Griffiths revealed that graphic design and screen media student Brooke had a hearing impairment.

“She told me at the end of the first class she needs to look me in the face because she lip reads,” he said.

But he’s prone to wandering as he speaks so Brooke stood up and followed him.

“She really made a difference to me in the way I treat students and being mindful of others,” he said.

“I have no doubt Brooke will make a difference in her career no matter what path she takes.

“Brooke’s going to be one of those people that’s going to be able to engage an audience and communicate a message.”

Brooke told the breakfast that she had completed a short course in interior design and would apply to study a bachelor of design next year.

FISHING has taken Paul Worsteling around the world.

“Fishing is not about fish,” he told the Greater Dandenong Chamber of Commerce Business Awards breakfast on Wednesday 24 August.

“Fishing is about place and faces.”

He’s seen baby bears in Alaska, a blue whale in Portland, Victoria, and killer wales with their babies off Exmouth, Western Australia.

In Papua New Guinea Mr Worsteling visited a village where the children had never seen a white person.

“I lifted up my top and showed them my belly,” he said.

“They started crying and ran into the jungle.”

He even met his wife, Cristy, through the hobby that he’s grown into a career spanning radio, television, books and two tackle shops.

Mr Worsteling grew up on a farm in Cranbourne and found his love for fishing when his dad put 500 fish into a dam.

“And sharing is caring,” he said, referring to social media.

Red hot business rise

By Alana Mitchelson NAOMI Simson sets an example for anyone with a strong passion for a new concept to launch their own business even if that might mean walking around with red helium balloons tied to their briefcase.

Simson threw all of her savings into an idea that, with its early setbacks, took time to attract customers.

It took passion, patience, hard work and an open mind, as well as keeping a sense of humour, for her to find success.

She said her first website was basic with a red background and black writing and that the only key terms a Google search could detect from the homepage were the words ‘skip intro’.

So in the initial months, Simson found herself with no money and no customers.

The now nationally renowned entrepreneur and founder of the online company Red Balloon, also known for her role as a resident shark on the television show Shark Tank, recounted her journey to other businesswomen at the CaseyCardinia women’s business lunch on Friday 26 August. “I realised I had the opportunity to create intimate moments in people’s lives,� Simson said. “But it took a long time to get customers on board. I used to tie red balloons to my briefcase with the website URL on it, hoping someone would see it. Hope doesn’t work as a business strategy. “It was the longest two months and three days of my life. I was so excited

Soon Simson was faced with the decision to employ a manager, a recruiter and employees who could help her fulfil the company’s customer promise.

She emphasised the importance of employee engagement. “The hardest thing for me was to let go. Initially, I did everything. I even used to blow up the balloons,� she laughed. “But I knew I couldn’t do everything. “Disengaged employees cost about $17 billion a year in lost productivity.

Remember that 85 per cent of engaged employees will stay with you. “The scary part is that 23 per cent of your disengaged employees - who are most likely bad mouthing you - are planning to spend their whole career with you. I say set them free. Let them go work for the competition.�

Simonson likened running a small business to a rowing crew racing a boat.

The leader may be the smallest, but is the only one who can see the rhythm of the river to set the strategy.

Everyone else trusts the leader implicitly. They have to do the exact same thing to be truly aligned and only that makes them unstoppable.

Red Balloon sold 300 experience gifts in its first year, then began selling 300 gifts a month and continued to grow each year. “There’s so much more to business success than just the idea. It’s about passion and energy; what drives you to persist every day,� Simson said. “Passion can get confused with money, but real passion is something that you feel when you wake up in the morning - it annoys all your friends and family because it’s all you ever talk about.�

Kids debate on refugees

By Georgia Westgarth IN A society scattered with new Australians, it seemed fitting for Hampton Park Secondary College students to debate a topic so close to home; refugees.

Students from five different schools across the state took up the Model UN debating challenge on Friday 26 August.

Eighty students from Year 7 to 12 made up teams, as small as two people,

to represent all the countries of the world.

The teams then debated the global issue of: ‘Refugees: A Humanitarian Crisis’ from the stance of the country they represented.

Some students said they learnt more about politics than they had bargained for.

Hampton Park Secondary College, Year 10 student Allison MacCuaig said the debate was a great insight into

politics, a subject her school was yet to offer.

“There was a lot of different perspectives that you must take on from different countries - it was interesting to look at it from Syria’s point of view,” Alison said.

The students discussed economics, population, infrastructure and political reasoning as to why certain countries couldn’t take on more refugees and why that wouldn’t be sustainable.

Students then debated other ways countries could provide help, such as financial aid.

Some students even formed a newfound sympathy for world leaders.

Hampton Park Secondary College teacher, Anna Carrig, a former UN youth volunteer said the event developed more than just cleaner debating skills.

“It allowed students to learn and to develop an authentic and deep under-

standing of why in the current global climate a forum for collaboration between nations is so crucial,” Ms Carrig said.

“In a closing speech on the day the acting Secretary-General, the UNAA Victorian division’s Vice-President Ian Howie, spoke to the students about the significance of the purposes of the UN - to bring countries together to discuss and combat the most urgent global issues facing the world today.”

Stitch up a course THE Narre Warren North Uniting Church is about to commence three new community programs. Stitch and Chat, a disadvantaged toddlers group, and affordable cooking. The disadvantaged toddlers support group is a self-help support group for parents whose severely disadvantaged children are unable to participate in mainstream pre-school activities. Pumas run out of room

By Russell Bennett ALL the Pakenham Pumas are after is a level playing field.

Currently they’re operating out of a ‘clubroom’ not much bigger than a double car garage, and even then they have to share that with the neighbouring Pakenham Little Athletics Club.

Both clubs are desperately crying out for facility upgrades to cater for their member base, which in the Pumas’ case has grown rapidly now that they’ve got a wide range of teams across both winter and summer seasons.

Last Saturday morning - on its two diamonds, plus an additional two makeshift diamonds - the Pumas hosted all four junior grand finals of the Dandenong Baseball Association, which extends far and wide throughout Melbourne’s east.

The event was a roaring success, with hundreds gathering to cheer the Under 11s, Under 13s, Under 15s and Under 17s on.

Cars packed out the carparks at Toomuc Reserve next to the Cardinia Life stadium and main football ground - an incredible showing for the Pumas, given that Pakenham didn’t have any of its sides participating on grand final day.

But that’s the power of the sport from a junior right through to a senior level.

Pumas vice president and winter club coach Travis Hough said he and his fellow club members had had enough of being an afterthought when it came to funding for facility upgrades.

“The biggest problem is that we’ve had a lot of kids come through our junior ranks only to move on to clubs with better facilities,” he said.

“We’ve got a two-car garage, essentially, with a canteen and a toilet.

“You could double the size of it for minimum cost - no worries at all - and it’d still be too small.

“In two weeks’ time we have to move all our stuff out so that the Little Aths can move theirs in, and we’re operating out of a shed for an entire summer season.”

Pumas volunteers were at Toomuc Reserve until late on Friday night, and back from 6am the next morning to prepare the area for the four grand finals.

The club has the members, it has the participants - all it needs is the facilities it deserves.

Eagles the winners

By David Nagel CROSS-CREEK rivals Beaconsfield and Berwick have shown enormous character to score epic come-from-behind victories in week one of the South East Football Netball League finals series.

The Eagles twice came from 25-points down to defeat Doveton in a classic elimination final at Holm Park Reserve, while the Wickers overcame a 21-point half-time deficit to steamroll Narre Warren in Saturday’s qualifying final at Edwin Flack Reserve.

“Today was really character building,” said Berwick cocaptain Michael Harold after the match.

“We were 20 points down at half time, they had the momentum and the chips were down.

Even at three quarter time we were still behind kicking into a slight breeze. It was an uncharacteristic win for us, we had to scrap and dig deep and get the game on out terms but it just shows that when we play our brand of footy we can really take it to them. I couldn’t be prouder.”

And Beaconsfield skipper Daniel Mislicki was equally effusive about his teams’ performance.

“It was a big effort to come back from that far back, especially in a final, I’m proud of the boys the way they lifted when the game was on the line,” Mislicki said.

Berwick, who will now play Cranbourne in Saturday’s second semi-final at Pakenham, was denied its usual run and carry by the Magpies in the first half. The Magpies trailed by three points at quarter time, but kicked 3.6 to 0.0 in the second term to take full control of the contest.

Realistically, they should have six goals ahead at half time.

But Berwick surged after the

break, kicking eight goals to three to run out 14-point winners.

Ben Kearns kicked three for the Wicks; Jayden Joyce was superb down back, while the run and carry of half backs Ash Smith, Michael Riseley and Jo West returned in the nick of time in the second half.

Andrew Hunter kicked three, Dean Kelly two, while Josh Tonna, Michael Collins and Dylan Quirk were influential for the Magpies around the ground.

Doveton looked home against Beaconsfield on Sunday, but the Eagles rallied to score a thrilling two-point victory in a classic battle for survival.

The Doves led by 12 points at half time and kicked the opening two of the third term to kick out to a commanding 25-point lead.

Nick Battle was running riot for the Doves, but late goals to youngsters Kade Lynch and Jake Bowd gave the Eagles a sniff heading to the final break.

Former Hawthorn forward Beau Dowler started clunking marks in the last, with his goal at the 15-minute mark followed by six-pointers to Josh Dodsworth and Mislicki to give the Eagles a famous victory.

“He (Dowler) was huge with some of the marks he took, but some of the young blokes like Jake Bowd off half back, Michael Misso, they gave us a spark, and Scotty (Meyer) was really important against (Russ) Gabriel in the ruck,” Mislicki said after the match.

Dowler and Troy McDermott finished with two each for the winners, while the effort of Trent Stokoe to limit the impact of Battle in the second half played a crucial role in the victory.

The Eagles will start underdogs against Narre Warren in Sunday’s first semi-final at Edwin Flack Reserve.

Coach revs it up

By David Nagel WOW, what an opening to the South East Football Netball League finals series on the weekend!

A tough and bruising encounter between Beaconsfield and Hampton Park, followed by a classic Sunday showdown between Doveton and Tooradin - the weekend simply had it all.

Let’s start with Hampton Park’s 50-43 win over Beaconsfield in Saturday’s qualifying final, a rough house affair that saw neither team take a backward step in a highly entertaining contest.

Beaconsfield suffered an early blow with Amanda McKenna (C) going down with a knee injury, replaced by Rylee Nelson in the pivot.

Neither team could shake the other in the first half, with big collisions the order of the day.

Beaconsfield defenders Dani Cameron (GK) and Kaela Hughes (GD) were having a great battle with Brooke Kiely (GS) and Birgitta Nemaric (GA), while Nelson and Monalisa Groom (C) were matching motors through the midcourt.

Things were tight all over the court - but the Redbacks made their move in the third term after a rev up from coach Kylie Kibble.

“It was a really scratchy first half for us, but we still won both quarters by a goal each,” Kibble said.

“I said ‘Come on girls, we’re not playing our best netball, so let’s play our best netball and finish strong and we had a great third quarter.”

The Redbacks looked like a real contender in the third term, with Rania Waller (GK) and Karli Foster (GD) super strong down back, while Maddi Hanlen (WD) and Natu Fahnana (WA) lifted their rating through the midcourt. And Groom, well she kept on her toes in the second half, working up and down the court with real intent.

The Redbacks’ 14-8 third term proved to be the difference between the two sides.

Doveton and Tooradin - for very different reasons- will still be shaking their heads in disbelief after the Doves came from behind to nail the Seagulls 40-39 in an absolute epic elimination final at Holm Park Reserve.

You could write your own ticket on the Doves at quarter time, with the Seagulls 15-8 ahead and playing some silky skilled netball. The front half of the court was working beautifully, with Alex Duff (GA) and Dayle Willis (GS) making the most of some brilliant work from
