EMILY and Martin from Monbulk, also known as ‘Team Without a Paddle’, enjoyed participating in this year’s Shitbox Rally so much, they’re preparing for another crack in 2017. With the aim of raising valuable funds for the Cancer Council, the 2017 rally will depart mid-next year from Adelaide and finish in Cairns, taking in 3800kms in just seven days. Emily and Martin have now purchased their car and are finalising preparations. During their fund-raising adventure, they will be sleeping in their car, a 1986 former RACV station wagon. PROGRESS on the anticipated Emerald Hills Hub project is gaining momentum, despite work initially being flagged to start last month. Cardinia Shire Council last week invited community members to provide feedback on four possible design scenarios for the hub, which aims to unite numerous community services, including health and counselling services, an arts space and local tourism promotion. The announcement follows months of talks over the proposed designs, during which the planning stage stalled. This disruption was due to disagreements over the designs between council and community stakeholders, which included the Hills Hub Advisory Committee. In February this year, Cardinia Shire Council’s team leader Community Strengthening, Tim Cooper, told the ‘Mail’ the planning stage had stalled, but assured the funding arrangements were secure. “The Hills Hub redevelopment has been in planning phase for the past 12 months with a wide range of community stakeholders making up the Hills Hub Advisory Group,” he said. “Council, in partnership with the community stakeholder organisations, are exploring options, regarding moving forward with the redevelopment as planned.” Before Mr Cooper’s statement, Cardinia Shire had reported about 19 submissions were being assessed, with the final design to be further developed in consultation with the Hills Hub Advisory Group and wider community. Now, residents and business owners have until Wednesday, 31 August, to indicate their preferred design. To aid the process, Cardinia Shire will be hosting four commu-
nity question and answer sessions over two days at the Emerald RSL. The first sessions will be on Wednesday, August 10, from 4pm to 6pm, and 6.30pm to 8.30pm; and Wednesday, 24 August, from 4pm to 6pm, and 6.30pm to 8.30pm. From Tuesday, 9 August, community members can view the design scenarios and complete the online survey. The survey will be live from Tuesday, 9 August, and available at cardinia.vic.gov.au/haveyoursay. The Emerald Hills Hub will be located in the Emerald Library and Mechanics Hall precinct. The existing hall was to be renovated and a new building constructed in the space occupied by the local Men’s Shed and the University of the Third Age (U3A). In June last year, about 100 people attended an information session at the Emerald Hall precinct and provided feedback for the imitative. Then Cardinia Shire mayor Letitia Wilmot was confident the hub would address important social, health and economic needs in the east-west corridor of the Hills region. “This facility is a significant project that will greatly benefit the Hills community for many years to come,” Cr Wilmot said. Community feedback points will be located at Emerald Library, Emerald U3A, Emerald Men’s Shed, Emerald Mechanic’s Institute, Emerald RSL, Gembrook Community Centre, Council’s Customer Service Centre. Feedback on the proposed designs can be emailed to C.Strengthening@cardinia.vic. gov.au or posted to Emerald Hills Hub Design Scenario consultation, Cardinia Shire Council, PO Box 7, Pakenham VIC 3810.
