Monbulk Cricket Club president, Chris Defina, said recently the pavilion was something the community needed desperately.

“It’s definitely very exciting, but it needs to happen sooner rather than later,” he said.

“Our junior representation, in football and cricket, is at an all-time high.

“And we could lose these kids if something isn’t done soon ... it’s a pretty tired building.”

However, Mr Defina said the pavilion would be of greater benefit than to just sporting clubs.

Monbulk Primary School, too, would be a direct beneficiary because they often use the reserve for their physical education classes.

A FEDERAL re-election commitment could see the construction of a first-class pavilion at the Monbulk Recreation Reserve.

In what would be the final piece of the funds puzzle, Casey MP Tony Smith announced a re-elected Liberal Government would invest $600,000 into a $2.5 million upgrade, which would be a coup for the region’s many sporting communities.

Yarra Ranges Council in September last year announced a $1 million commitment to the project, which added to $600,000 in Victorian Government funding and $250,000 raised from local clubs.

The funds announcement effectively matched the state funds and made up the

remaining shortfall for the project.

This Monbulk project includes upgraded changerooms and a gym, canteen, recreation room and greater storage capacity.

Presently, many of the core sports groups in Monbulk are unable to support burgeoning junior participation, not to mention its successful senior cricket, netball and football clubs.

At a special announcement on Saturday 28 May, Mr Smith said the investment would improve facilities for the local community.

Mr Smith paid tribute to the work of the Monbulk Football Netball Club and Monbulk Cricket Club.

KNOX City Council tabled its proposed budget for the 2016-'17 financial year at a special council meeting on Tuesday 3 May. The proposed budget contains a number of public capital works for the Ferntree Gully and Upper Ferntree Gully areas.

The next stage of the rejuvenation of the old CSR Quarry in Ferntree Gully has received $200,000 in funding for the coming financial year.

Talaskia Reserve in Upper Ferntree Gully has also been earmarked for $200,000 for the development and implementation of a master plan for improvements to the ground and facilities.

The centre of Ferntree Gully is moving closer to receiving a facelift with $100,000 allocated in the proposed budget for the implantation of a master plan to rejuvenate the village square.

Upgrades to the Knox Regional Netball Centre in Ferntree Gully are also set to be funded to the tune of $55,000 in 2016-'17.

The HV Jones Reserve will also have a master plan developed for potential upgrades with the council allocating $45,000 for the development of that plan.

The Knox City Council proposed budget allocates $9.4 million for roads infrastructure across the council.

Club president Steve Navarra said Lazlo, a former Hawks player and Hallam Senior College student, was a likeable, quiet boy who stayed out of trouble and had many friends at the club.

The family was highly respected.

Lazlo’s three brothers play for the Hawks and their mother was a generous contributor.

“The family don’t deserve this.

They are a wonderful family,” Mr Navarra said.

The day after the crash, Mr Navarra was set to join club members and friends filling the Nagy home to cook meals and console the popular family.

Senior Endeavour Hills team players were resolved to wear black armbands at last weekend’s game and the junior team was to do the same and pay a minute’s silence to Lazlo.

An Endeavour Hills Hawks Junior Football club member, close to the Nagy family, said it was hard to find the words to say to the family.

The cause of the crash is being investigated by the Major Collision Investigation Unit which will prepare a report for the coroner.

“I have lost a brother in an eerily similar way.

My advice to these poor families, friends and loved ones is just be there for them. Don’t be scared to ask how they are doing even though they are obviously feeling crap.

Even if you can’t say a word, your help and show of support is what counts.

It won’t mend what’s unfixable but will mean the world to them.”

TWO good-natured Casey teenagers are dead, another is fighting for life in The Alfred after an horrific twocar crash in Kallista on 24 May. On one hand they are statistics of a 2016 road toll that refuses to buckle ‘Towards Zero’. It had soared to 122 by 26 May - 17 ahead of last year.

To loved ones of Kristof Kollar, 19, and his mate Lazlo Nagy, 17, the toll is unimaginably crushing.

The two died at the scene after the car they were travelling in crashed when it skidded on Monbulk Road near Grant’s Picnic Ground, collided into an oncoming 4WD and rolled down an embankment in the dark.

Their passenger, Aaron Goldsmith, 18, was airlifted to The Alfred hospital with critical head injuries.

Out of the catastrophe, brothers of the two late teenagers posted a defiant photo, arms around each other, in front of the crash shrine.

Oliver Kollar declared on Facebook that he and Isaac Nagy both grieved for their older brothers.

“You and I lost a great deal.

“They left here together so today my friend and for the rest of my life you are my brother.”

Earlier, Oliver delivered a mighty message via a media pack at the shrine for everyone to “cherish your family”.

“Don’t be too manly to say ‘I love you’.”

Tributes have poured onto social media for the pair, some of them from school friends from Gleneagles Secondary Collage, Hallam Senior College and Fountain Gate Secondary College.

Kristof was described as “someone I could always count on” who helped the person who wrote the tribute to blend into their first days at a new school.

His employer, Pretty’s Prime Cuts, posted that he was “such a lovely, well-mannered, all-round great kid”.

I FEEL very fortunate to be raising my family in the hills, an incredible area where we are surrounded by such unique, natural beauty.

Whether it’s a drive through the Dandenong Ranges, a walk through one of our many stunning gardens, or a leisurely bike ride, this is truly a beautiful place to live.

However, we cannot take this for granted and the government must stand with the local community to ensure our native flora and fauna is protected.

This is why I was so pleased to recently announce that Victoria’s bird emblem, the Helmeted Honeyeater, will now have new habitat thanks to a $400,000 funding boost in the Budget.

Helmeted Honeyeaters, native to Victoria, have been quietly making a comeback from nearextinction in Melbourne’s eastern outskirts through a decades-long program of initiatives to protect habitat and boost population numbers.

Last year, the Andrews Labor Government released 18 captivebred birds into the wild, the largest such release in Victoria’s history, and also provided $175,000 for the Helmeted Honeyeater Recovery

Program.

This program has been crucial in allowing the birds to fight back from near-extinction and is a major reason for the recent upswing in numbers, which are currently in excess of 150 and represent the biggest known population in decades.

While celebrating this great news, we must acknowledge the hard work of volunteers, staff at the Department of Environment Land Water and Planning (DELWP); and the efforts of organisations like Friends of the Helmeted Honeyeater in ensuring that this wonderful species has a bright future.

Our local environment was a big winner in the Budget, which also provided $248 million to increase our capacity to respond to bushfires, protect other threatened native species and help our communities tackle climate change.

On top of this, there is also funding for targeted, high priority actions that will protect important local biodiversity sites by removing weeds and pests - this will be achieved in partnership with local government and other land managers.

One thing that we can all agree on is that we must protect the unique natural environment that surrounds us, to ensure future generations can experience it as we do.

The hills is undoubtedly one of Victoria’s most beautiful areas and we should all be very proud to call it home.

Tag some taggers EMERALD Police are calling for the public’s help in finding taggers who sprayed graffiti around the Emerald and Cockatoo area earlier in the month.

Senior Sergeant Greg Addis said that graffiti had been sprayed on buildings and even a Puffing Billy carriage in the Emerald and Cockatoo areas on the weekend of 21-22 May. Three vehicles stolen POLICE are looking for witnesses after three vehicles were stolen from a workshop in Lilydale, with tools still unaccounted for.

Yarra Ranges Crime Investigation Unit (CIU) Detective Acting Sergeant Marc Hodgson said that between 20-23 May, unknown people cut a chain and padlock in a factory area of Hereford Road, Lilydale.

The thieves then cut metal sheeting on an exterior wall of a workshop, before stealing three vehicles with tools in them.

Det Sgt Hodgson said the vehicles had since been recovered, but hand tools and power tools from them have yet to be found.

He said anyone who has more information, or who had been offered tools engraved with “Downer Group” or similar should contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000 or www.crimestoppersvic.com.au.

Facing theft charges A BROADMEADOWS man is facing more than 30 charges for thefts around the state and in the Yarra Ranges after being arrested in Lilydale last week.

The man, 45, was arrested in Lilydale on Friday, 27 May, in relation to multiple burglaries in the eastern, outer-eastern, northern, inner-northern and western suburbs of Melbourne.

Yarra Ranges Crime Investigation Unit (CIU) Detective Acting Sergeant Marc Hodgson said the man was initially charged with about 30 offences, though more were to be added.

He was remanded in custody to appear at the Broadmeadows Magistrates’ Court on 10 June.

Billy keeps economy steaming

By PETER DOUGLAS AS THE federal election race heats up, the funding promises are coming in thick and fast.

Potentially, this could be a boon for the Dandenong Ranges, with Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull visiting Emerald Lake Park on Wednesday, 25 May, to announce a $20 million injection to boost tourism in the region.

In a move that is designed to capitalise on a predicted Chinese tourist boom, the promise comprises $10 million to widen the Mount Dandenong Tourist Road, $6.5 million to upgrade the Puffing Billy Railway, $2.5 million for the Ridge Walk and $1 million to extend the Emerald/Cockatoo trail to Gembrook.

Along with Liberal colleague, La Trobe MP Jason Wood, Mr Turnbull fronted local and national media to announce the plan.

After arriving on Puffing Billy, Mr Turnbull said the election promise would help to drive the economy.

“We’re committing to a new discovery centre, upgrading the Mount Dandenong Tourist Road, in addition to developing some walking trails,” Mr Turnbull said.

“What all of this does is add to the strength of what is our largest services export ... tourism.

“These are key elements in our national economic plan.”

Mr Turnbull said the investment would help to create jobs.

“Tourism is absolutely critical, we’re seeing really strong growth, nine per cent growth last year ... very strong growth out of China, last year we saw one million Chinese tourists,” he said.

“And following Australia week in China, (where there was) an announcement that 2017 will be the year of China-Australia tourism ... you’ll see even stronger growth.

Mayor’s tag team plan

By VICTORIA STONE-MEADOWS YARRA Ranges Mayor Jason Callanan is looking for two talented artists ages 12-25 to change how the mayor’s office looks.

Cr Callanan is seeking local young artists to submit designs for murals to cover two of the walls in his office.

“I want some cool art to be put on walls, to mix it up here in this office because it’s a bit plain,” he said.

The two mural designs will need to cover one wall 1.8m wide by 2.4m high and another wall 2m wide by 2.4m high.

While the design brief says the murals should reflect the Yarra Ranges, Cr Callanan is looking for more than just paintings of trees.

“It’s up to the kids what they want to put up but I’m looking for something that’s edgy, that’s funky and that’s fun,” he said.

“I want something that identifies young people of the shire and I want them to be imaginative in what they want to put up there.”

The two artists who are picked to paint the murals will each receive a $100 Chirnside Park Shopping Centre voucher.

The plan received some back-lash on social media with some local people upset established local artists were not chosen to paint the murals.

Cr Callanan said running this competition was the best way to give all artists an equal opportunity to get the job.

“We wanted to give people an equal chance rather than council just choosing two people to paint,” he said.

“We could have gone away and just picked two artists to do it but there might be someone out there who might have something very different that we don’t know about.

“We might even unearth a few young artists too who might not have considered doing something like this.”

Entries for the mural competition will be accepted until Friday 17 June and the winning designs selected in the week starting Monday 20 June.

As a family who lived at Belgrave South for 38 years, we loved the area and the wonderful community support.

This was something that got us all through Ash Wednesday and, among others, the fire that destroyed one third of Upwey High School.

If you lived through the devastation to our community on Ash Wednesday - or a few years later sat on your roof with a hose feeling inadequate as water bombers re-filled at Cardinia Dam and flew metres over your head to water bomb the fire that destroyed much of Ferny Creek and reached the Upwey township - you would understand; you live in one of the most dangerous bushfire areas in the world and you should be totally supporting the CFA efforts to keep you safe.

There have been numerous years we experienced fires in the South Belgrave area, especially in the Wellington Road/Belgrave-Hallam Road area. Just because we may not have experienced a fire this year, or the past few years, it doesn’t mean the danger has gone away.

When the bushfire hit the Belgrave area just a few years ago, there was absolute gridlock on all roads leading down to Upper Ferntree Gully; sometimes people never learn until it’s too late.

This is not something that just happens to someone else.

I WRITE regarding (Yarra Ranges) Council plans to spend $28 million on the redevelopment of their offices.

Back in 2013, Yarra Ranges Council was lining up to move to the old Swinburne site, which is now the home of Box Hill TAFE’s Lilydale campus. However, under duress from Labor’s Deputy Premier and Education Minister James Merlino, those plans were killed off for his selfish political reasons.

Had council been able to move to the old Swinburne site, they could have done so for less than half of the estimated $28 million, leaving more money in the kitty for other worthwhile initiatives such as road maintenance and footpaths. Why do Labor’s decisions always end up costing taxpayers the Earth?

By JESSE GRAHAM YARRA Ranges residents will have to hold off with their burn-offs, with the council issuing a reminder that burning off is banned in residential zones over June and July.

On Monday 23 May, the Yarra Ranges Council released a reminder that burning off is prohibited in residential bushland areas through June and July.

Mayor Jason Callanan said the reason for the ban was because wood and organic material was wettest during these months, and would create “excessive smoke“ when burnt.

“Burning wet material is prohibited under the local law,“ he said.

“The law aims to strike a balance between burning off for fuel reduction purposes and reducing the impact of smoke on neighbours and the environment.

“Residents across the whole

municipality may be affected, with Belgrave, Belgrave Heights, Belgrave South, Coldstream, East Warburton, Ferny Creek, Healesville, Kalorama, Kallista, Launching Places, Menzies Creek, Millgrove, Monbulk, Montrose, Mount Dandenong, Mount Evelyn, Olinda, Powelltown, Sassafras, Selby, Seville, Seville East, Sherbrooke, Tecoma, Upwey, Wandin North, Warburton, Wesburn, Woori Yallock, Yarra Glen and Yarra Junction being partially or completely residential zones.

Those in rural zones will still be permitted to burn off, for fire prevention purposes - however, burning off is also not allowed on Sundays, Smog Alert Days and Total Fire Ban Days in this zone.

For those in residential zones, the council suggested alternatives to burning, such as mulching, taking green waste to a waste transfer station or using a green waste bin.

NEVER underestimate the power of community people to make significant change.

Federal Environment Minister Greg Hunt emphasised this message when announcing more than $1 million funding for fuel reduction and revegetation projects across the Dandenong Ranges.

Mr Hunt visited the region on Monday 23 May, to announce grants to 23 local groups, which included various landcare and friends groups, and environmental associations.

One of the key funding announcements included $230,000 to StopPitt, which aims to help control the spread of pittosporum within the Dandenong Ranges.

During his visit to Menzies Creek, Mr Hunt toured a study site which has been decimated by pittosporum.

He used the opportunity to pay tribute to all groups committed to keeping the Dandenong Ranges beautiful.

“Never underestimate the power of small community people to make lasting and significant changes,” he said.

“What you have here in the Dandenongs is one of Australia’s great natural treasures and you know (the region) better than anyone; you are the custodians, the carers; you know about the challenges of ... all the different invasive species. “(Pittosporum) is the European carp or the crown of thorns in the hills.”

Mr Hunt said the Dandenong Ranges deserved federal assistance, which would, in turn, help the helmeted honeyeater, the Leadbeater’s Possum and other threatened species.

“The honeyeater and possum (are) magnificent native species, threatened and vulnerable,” he said.

The Port Phillip and Westernport Catchment Management Authority will deliver the grants under the Federal Government’s three-year, $3 million Dandenong Ranges Environmental and Bushfire Reduction programme.

Mr Hunt also paid tribute to his colleague, La Trobe MP Jason Wood, who, he said, had advocated passionately for the funds.

Mr Wood said the projects would improve life for many of the communities in the Dandenong Ranges including Sassafras, Emerald, Cockatoo, Belgrave, Gembrook, Clematis and Ferny Creek.

“The Dandenong Ranges is a vital part of Victoria’s tourism industry with a thriving community,” he said.

“These projects will help to protect that industry, while improving biodiversity and reducing the bushfire risk to visitors and residents,” Mr Wood said.

Jeff Walker from StopPitt said the community shouldn’t underestimate the

destructive power of pittosporum.

“Sweet pittosporum, or ‘Pitto’, is an invasive weed tree which prevents competition and totally destroys diversity - no orchids, no wildflowers, no other plants,” he said.

“It will replace our eucalypts unless it is controlled.”

Mr Walker said the StopPitt group emerged after a citizen science project with Grade 6 students from the Menzies Creek Primary School.

This led to a research paper with Professor Ros Gleadow from Monash University.

Professor Gleadow is the World Expert on pittosporum and predicted in the 1980s this situation would develop.

In addition to the announcement, Mr Hunt made a re-election promise of $400,000 for two new Green Army projects in the Dandenong Ranges, with a focus on threatened species.

Awards bring out the best

By RUSSELL BENNETT THE Rotary Club of Emerald and District held its Pride of Workmanship Awards at the Paradise Hotel in Clematis recently - thanking and paying tribute to those from a wide cross-section of the community for their contributions to the local area.

Gembrook MP Brad Battin, Cardinia Shire Mayor Jodie Owen and Ranges Ward councillor Leticia Wilmott attended the presentation evening alongside a host of other guests including Rotary District 9810 governor David Tolstrup.

They helped present a range of awards across the education, volunteering, community and business sectors.

The McLeod Murphy Memorial Fund Annual Scholarship was also presented to local student Oscar Hulbert.

The memorial fund provides scholarships in the form of cash grants to tertiary students from Emerald and the surrounding region who’re undertaking studies in medical-related fields.

Each recipient of the award is presented with $2000 - $1000 for one year of study, and a further $1000 a year later if they continue down that path.

Last year, Holly Latter was the recipient, and in 2016 she’s continuing in her third year of a Bachelor of Nursing and Bachelor of Paramedicine at Australian Catholic University in Ballarat.

An avid fun runner, he dreamed up the Great Train Race in 1980 and the Kids Fun Run with Thomas in 2002. Since moving with their family to Gembrook in 1998, Merle has become immersed in the community - everything from the church, to the market, to the craft group, to the township committee and Puffing Billy. An avid gardener, Merle has a specific interest in the environment and is an active member of the Friends of Gembrook Park, the Southern

Make your vote count this federal election Saturday 2 July At this year’s federal election, the way you vote for the Senate has changed and it’s important that you understand how to vote correctly.

On the large white Senate ballot paper, you can choose to vote either above or below the line.

By PETER DOUGLAS AFTER sell-out shows throughout the Yarra Ranges, it’s now Upwey’s turn to enjoy all that is incredible about singer-songwriter, Bob Dylan.

The two-hour narrated rock ‘n’ roll show DYLANesque is set to rock the hills, while exploring the life and music of the renowned musician.

The show spans from Dylan’s early years through to his evolution as a world-renowned artist.

Musician Jeff Jenkins takes the lead role and said the show was way more than just playing some cool cover songs.

“We’re not a tribute band, it’s more a theatre show because between the songs, I tell the audience stories about Dylan and what was going on in the world when he wrote some of his most famous songs,” he said.

“And we love the fact that after each show, people come up to us and say ‘that was brilliant’ and ‘I had no idea that half those songs were ever written

by Bob Dylan’.”

Many of the ‘I didn’t know that’ moments come from the great collaborations Dylan had with his peers over many decades.

The songs he penned were hits for everyone from Jimi Hendrix to Peter, Paul and Mary; and Manfred Mann.

‘Mentals’ come to town Her name means art

By PETER DOUGLAS HAVING blessed Australia’s stages, playlists, TV screens and awards nights for nearly 40 years, Mental As Anything will soon hit the Sooki Lounge in Belgrave.

Boasting 12 albums between 1979 and 2009, the band’s contribution to the Australian music scene was formally recognised in 2009 with their induction into the ARIA Hall Of Fame.

The art pop pioneers will perform at the Sooki Lounge on Thursday, 16 June, with their visit coinciding with the release of a new single and upcoming new material.

The group recently announced the release of a new single ‘Shake off your Sandals’, which has been described as an instant pop classic with a distinct Mentals’ twist.

The release is the first in what will be a regular suite of singles (one every five months).

The performance also coincides with the lead-up to a re-issue of the Mentals’ most cherished albums (Get Wet, Cats and Dogs, Fundamental As Anything, Mouth To Mouth and Liar Liar Pants On Fire).

The iconic releases are being reissued in a five-album set on Sunday, 11 December.

Vocalist Greedy Smith said it was a fantastic time for the band.

“We are pumped to release five of our most important studio albums in a five-CD set,” he said.

“This coincides with our first ‘new’ recordings in many years.

THE name Chris Lawry is synonymous with fabulous art in the Dandenong Ranges.

Lawry has been part of numerous Open Studios Weekends, the End of the Line Festival and exhibitions including the Burrinja Climate Change Biennale.

Now, Lawry will present her new exhibition ‘ICONIC’.

The free exhibition will take place from Saturday, 4 June, to Sunday, 3 July, at the Burrinja Cultural Centre.

Taking inspiration from her mother’s paintings of icons, and featuring four local artists who have worked with iconic imagery, the exhibition features numerous different media.

Lawry said this is a chance to work with her mother, Betty Lawry.

“My mother has loved painting icons for many years and I wanted the chance to exhibit with her, so I decided to organise an exhibition with a medieval theme,” she said.

“Local artists Kirsten Laken, Marke Noke and I have had great fun creating works in our own mediums, but which have medieval subjects and styles that happily sit next to the icons.”

Lawry described the works by each of the four artists as “familiar, yet fantastic”.

The work includes paintings, stained glass, lino cut prints and photographic works; all inspired by the medieval era.

Betty Lawry paints icons based on those images of Christian saints of Eastern Orthodox Churches.

Her versions of this age-old art-form are non-traditional, painted on archival paper and framed.

Meanwhile, Laken works with stained glass.

Her pieces have a clear relationship to the stained glass and leadlight church windows of the medieval era.

Laken’s modern renditions of saints and monsters are created using traditional, century-old techniques which she splashes with colour for a contemporary take.

The Burrinja Cultural Centre is located on the corner of Glenfern Rd and Mason Drive, Upwey.

BRYAN Singer’s updated XMen series is just spinning its wheels with X-Men: Apocalypse.

The re-awakening of El Sabah Nur (Oscar Isaac), the mythical first mutant, places the entire world in jeopardy, and the X-Men, led by telepath Professor X (James McAvoy) must band together once again to stop him.

For all Isaac’s stolid gravitas, El Sabah Nur is a generic antagonist with vague worlddestroying motivations. The film wastes a lot of time show-

ing him recruiting his Horsemen of the Apocalypse, as most of these henchmen have negligible roles in the narrative.

First Class was a politically-charged prequel and Days of Future Past was a universealtering revisionist adventure, but Apocalypse has comparatively little impact or consequence. Magneto (Michael Fassbender), El Sabah Nur’s favoured Horseman, is levelling entire cities with his magnetic powers, but this carnage feels very disconnected from the film’s constrained resolution.

The action is exciting in the moment but unmemorable,

save for (once again) a wonderfully creative slow-motion centrepiece with Quicksilver (Evan Peters).

But Apocalypse is still leagues better than Batman v Superman because of its strong performances and some great character development. The younger X-Men have very endearing personalities, and it’s gratifying to watch them work together as a team and fully realise their abilities.

Placed against recent superhero classics and travesties, X-Men: Apocalypse is thoroughly mediocre, but still decently entertaining.

THE Lilydale Historical Society has sadly said farewell to a stalwart member of their group with the passing of Margaret (Brenda) Crawshaw aged 84 years.

Mrs Crawshaw led an extraordinary life since moving to Kalorama in 1956 with husband Steve and sons Robert and John.

Mrs Crawshaw quickly became involved in her new local community, becoming a member of the Country Women’s Association and being active in the local school.

It was in 1976 that Mrs

Crawshaw made an ascent into public life following the resignation of Keith Fraser from the then Shire of Lillydale.

She stood for the bi-election six weeks before the ordinary elections were scheduled.

She won in the scheduled election by only a handful of votes to become the first ever woman elected to the Shire of Lillydale in a contested election.

Opposed by Len Cox in both elections, she claimed the seat with a larger majority than the time before.

During her time as a councillor, Mrs Crawshaw was a fero-

cious advocate for the establishment of the Lilydale Library Service and worked tirelessly for the people of the shire.

Mrs Crawshaw stayed an active member of the community after her time on council through the Lilydale Aged Care Council.

She didn’t stop there either, after the death of her husband 25 years ago, Mrs Crawshaw joined the Ringwood War Widows and was president there for many years.

A regular member of the Lilydale Historical Society, Mrs Crawshaw will be sorely missed by all members, friends and family.

Lantern parade in Belgrave NOW is the time to start making your own lanterns to be a part of the 10th annual Belgrave Lantern Parade on Saturday, 18 June.

Each year, the Lantern Parade brings together the community of the hills in a celebration of friendship and creativity.

The Main Street is reclaimed for the people and thousands flock to take part in one of the best and biggest communitymade spectacles as hundreds of

lanterns line the main street, accompanied by drummers, dancers and performers.

There is also a fabulous lineup of performers and events before and after the parade, including children’s Story Time in the Library after the parade, and Mount Burnett Observatory telescopes for some star gazing.

In 2016, the Main Street will be closing half an hour earlier and there will be a Lantern Village, where people can enjoy

themselves before and after the parade at the top of Hayes Car Park.

Olinda are flag favourites

Fog at Olinda, sun at Monbulk, bit of rain elsewhere had punters with jackets on, sunglasses and heaters in cars going.

Some of the football and netball would have either had you chilled to the bone or burning up with frustration.

Olinda has now firmed as flag favourites with a resounding demolition of a weakened Woori Yallock side.

Wandin and Healesville are just ticking along nicely.

Alexandra upset Yea on the weekend, while Gembrook keep surprising some footy supporters.

Four teams are now on 16 points in Division 2 as the battle for the minor positions on the ladder heats up.

Wandin is starting to firm as a bit of a favourite in A Grade Netball but Olinda and Warburton are hot on their heels.

Division 2 has Yarra Glen and Seville all tied up and they do not meet for the first time until Round 8.

Hawks spread their wings MONBULK JUNIOR FOOTBALL MONBULK Junior Football Club was far and wide for Round 6, playing at five different venues.

Under 9Bs played at Emerald and were missing three players from last week. Despite being undermanned, they played very well for the full four quarters. The highlights for the day were the defensive skills, talking and chasing, and pressure on the opposition which saved countless goals. A great team effort; no result recorded.

Yarra Ranges conquers the rain

By JAMIE STRUDLEY BRAVING freezing temperatures, rain and less than ideal weather conditions, a small but dedicated and enthusiastic group of Yarra Ranges Athletics athletes ventured to Mountain Recreation Reserve in Cockatoo to join the Cockatoo Little Athletics Club for a unique round of cross country at an exciting new venue.

Those who were brave enough to venture out on a morning where simply staying in bed was an extremely attractive preposition were treated to some classic cross country conditions; mud, puddles, obstacles, creek crossings, forest trails and, who could forget, hills.

The course was challenging with undulating and hilly terrain, bountiful obstacles and wet and sloppy conditions underfoot.

This - combined with a welcoming, friendly and relaxed atmosphere - ensured that the day was a success, with smiles beaming on all faces.

Haylee rides into the desert

By KATH GANNAWAY LAUNCHING Place dirt-bike rider, Haylee Malan, will have a great fanbase behind her as she tackles one of the most gruelling rides in Australia in June.

The 20-year-old is an integration aide at Yarra Junction Primary School and is studying to become a teacher.

Her goal to complete the 452-kilo-

metre desert race from Alice Springs to Finke and back is getting her some serious street-cred with the students and teachers.

Promoted as ‘the most fun you can have with a helmet on’, and with a reputation as one of the most difficult off-road courses in one of the remote places in the world, the two-day Tatts Finke Desert Race is a multi-terrain event for bikes, cars, buggies and

quads that attracts competitors from around the world.

Haylee is no newcomer to dirt-bike riding, starting at a young age and coming from a family which revels in the sport.

She rides competitively with the Motor Cycle Racing Club of Victoria, and in 2012 finished second in the Victorian Titles Open Women’s Class.

The Finke isn’t her first big race - In

2012 and 2013 she completed the Hattah Desert Race - but it is the biggest.

With her CRF250 bike primed for the race, she will line up in open section over the Queen’s Birthday weekend.

She said she signed on for the Finke to challenge herself and fulfil a goal to compete in an event that demanded a lot.

“My biggest challenge with this one will probably be endurance, because

it’s such a long distance, and it’s over such tough ground,” she said.

Haylee said she had a great group of sponsors from her dad’s company, Malan Engineering to local businesses Eastern Big Twin and Gr8 Coffee, but was keen to get more Yarra Valley sponsors on board for the event.

Fuel misers roam the Earth TOYOTA’S hybrid vehicles have saved their owners 25 billion litres of petrol enough fuel, theoretically, for each of their cars to travel around the Earth ... and then some.

The calculation was revealed by the world’s leading carmaker when it announced it has sold more than nine million Toyota and Lexus hybrid vehicles around the world, including more than 85,000 delivered in Australia.

The latest milestone, achieved in April, comes as Toyota Australia prepares to introduce its newest hybrid, Corolla, early in the second half of this year.

Toyota’s parent company in Japan has revealed that the total fuel saving from its nine million hybrids repre-

sents an average of more than 2770 litres per vehicle compared with driving petrol-only cars of similar size.

The saving would provide enough fuel for each of those vehicles to travel at least 52,400km, or 1.3 times around the equator, based on a nominal average consumption of 5.3 litres per 100km.

Three-quarters of the nine million hybrids use less than this amount of fuel.

Instead of doing that, of course, Toyota’s hybrid owners have pocketed billions of dollars in savings.

Toyota has also estimated its hybrid vehicles have resulted in approximately 67 million fewer tonnes of CO2 emissions than would have been emit-

ted by petrol-powered vehicles of similar size and driving performance.

Toyota Australia’s executive director sales and marketing Tony Cramb said the extent to which hybrid vehicles had found homes in driveways around the world confirmed them as a mainstream option for motorists.

“Toyota’s hybrid vehicles are renowned for their performance, reliability, durability and exceptionally low running costs as well as their contribution to the environment and to saving precious fossil fuels,” Mr Cramb said.

Corolla hybrid hatch will be introduced as a well-specified single grade, expanding the local company’s Hybrid Synergy Drive offerings to a fifth model.

By RUSSELL COLVIN WITH the Three Bridges Yamaha Victorian OffRoad Championship (VORC) round cancelled due to 30mm of rain last Wednesday and Thursday, round three and four of the championship was moved to Pakenham at the eleventh hour.

Much thanks went to the hard work from the MCRCV, Kooweerup and Corner Inlet motorcycle clubs, which pulled together to enable the rounds to still go ahead.

Daniel ‘Chucky’ Sanders, 21, from Three Bridges, was nothing but all class in Saturday’s three-hour cross-country format event, when he stormed to victory aboard his KTM 300EXC with a total time of 2hr30:12.614, 3min96.316 ahead of Mark Grove.

Saturday’s round win marked Sanders’ 14th career win in the Pro class since he made the step up in 2012.

Sanders told the Mail after the race; “It sure was a good day, that’s for sure. Obviously when you win it’s fun and you enjoy it a bit more.”

“The grass track was sloppy, but it was a lot of fun,” explained Sanders, who hit the lead early in the race.

“When I got to the front, I just focused on maintaining my lines and rolling off consistent lap times which was good enough to come out on top today.”

Sanders, who tops the championship tally in this year’s Australian Off-Road Championship (AORC), also said the first cross-country race of the year was good training for the upcoming cross-country format for the next round of the AORC at Hedley, at the end of July.

The ups-and-downs of motorsport racing was proven on Sunday in the sprint style format.

After proving to be the man to catch in the opening two heats, drama struck for the reigning two times Pro and Outright VORC champion in the third heat when his rear tyre blew off the rim, which resulted him plummeting down to twelfth position, two minutes behind the overall race leader.

From there it was all about playing catch up, which Sanders said he quite enjoyed the challenge as it was a bit of a change to what he is normally used to.

Sanders topped the time sheets in the remaining four heats which saw him climbing back up the order to finish second overall, 1min12.783 behind Jack Simpson.

“It was a lot of fun out there today,” said Sanders at the conclusion of the day.

“While I did not win today, it was a good challenge to come through the pack and get back to second place.

“It’s a shame about the rear tyre, but that’s racing.

“Main thing is we have extended our championship lead, so that is the positive we can take from this round.”

Meanwhile, 18-year-old Lyndon Snodgrass from Gladysdale, improved on his first VORC round by snaring two solid third place finishes aboard his First Class Motorcycles/Husqvarna Australia TE300.

Snodgrass finished 10.872 seconds behind Grove in Saturday’s cross-country round, while round four saw him finishing 15.572 seconds behind Sanders.

“The weekend went really well,” beamed Snodgrass.

“I said before this weekend, round one was a ‘character building round’ just because I did struggle a bit.

“So it’s nice to leave the weekend with two third places and to be sitting third in the championship fight.

“There’s still a long way to go in this championship, so it’s not over by any means.”

Sanders leads the VORC title fight on 72-points, 11 points clear from Simpson with Snodgrass in third on 55-points.

The VORC circus now heads to Leongatha, which will take place on 18 June.
