Wilting under tax SOUTHERN Downs farmers face an uncertain time, with the Federal Government announcing they will push back the introduction of the “backpacker tax” until next year.

NSW Farmers president Derek Schoen believes farmers will face a further six months of uncertainty in sourcing labour following the Federal Government’s announcement on Tuesday to delay the tax.

“A delay will not fix the problems that the backpacker tax creates for farmers and regional communities,” Mr Schoen said.

“Instead, it creates further uncertainty to farmers trying to plan investment decisions.

It’s time to dive in and make the decision to support growing Australia’s farming sector and our regional communities” The announcement by Assistant Treasurer Kelly O’Dwyer will push back the controversial tax until 1 January 2017, pending the outcome of a further government review.

NSW Farmers and the National Farmers’ Federation (NFF) have strongly opposed an increase in the backpacker tax, and have received almost 48,000 signatures in an online NFF petition opposing the measure.

“We have spoken with farmers in the areas such as the north coast who have serious fears of not being able to fulfil season work requirements for labour intensive crops such as blueberries,” Mr Schoen.

“Horticultural producers in the Central west have also highlighted their reliance on backpackers and their importance to the local economies of towns like Orange.

This backpacker tax will result in a shortterm workforce crisis for farmers and will impact on local food production.”

Mr Schoen said the Federal Government needed to develop a tax policy immediately that encouraged working holiday makers to come to Australia and work in rural and regional areas.

By TANIA PHILLIPS A 122-YEAR tradition continued at the weekend with the Warwick Turf Club hosting the annual Picnic Races on from noon on Saturday.

Turf Club secretary Kristen Doyle said it was a full house at the brand new Coffee Club Pavilion at the western end of the grounds with more than 800 people.

She said the event was now unique and old style with racegoers bringing their own food and drink and enjoying the day the way their ancestors did over the past almost century and a quarter.

For many local families including the Smiths and McDonalds, it is a long-standing family tradition, according to Kristen, to come along to the event. This year had a five-race card and Ergon Energy as its major sponsor.

Rose City Shopping World hosted the Fashions on the Field while a gourmet sausage sizzle was held later in the evening followed by live music by Toowoomba’s Ben Mayes.

Enjoying their Saturday at the Warwick Cup are Max Clark and Jas McMahon.

Dangerous driving POLICE have charged a man following a dangerous driving incident in the Stanthorpe area last week.

Police allege that about 8.50am on 11 May officers intercepted a utility on the New England Highway at Ballandean as part of a routine traffic operation.

The male driver submitted to a random breath test and while officers were doing a check on the ute’s registration he allegedly became agitated.

The vehicle check revealed the ute had been stolen from Singleton in northern New South Wales earlier in the day and, as a result, an officer told the driver to get out of the vehicle.

According to a police media spokesman, the man allegedly refused, turned the ute’s engine back on and resisted the officer’s attempts to turn it back off before pushing him away and speeding off.

“The officers attempted to intercept the vehicle in their service vehicle after it allegedly continued to drive at high speed north east along the New England Highway but it failed to pull over,” police media said.

The vehicle was next spotted around 9.10am driving at speed along the Maryland Creek Bridge at the southern end of the Stanthorpe CBD. Police said that the driver narrowly avoided crashing with several vehicles

and a pedestrian, drove on the wrong side of the road and collided with a building awning causing its tailgate to fall off.

Police again attempted to intercept the vehicle along Crystal Mountain Road near Cottonvale however the vehicle allegedly failed to stop and continued onto private property along Rabbit Fence Road.

On May 14, police attended a Noccundra hotel after a report from a member of the public that a ute was bogged nearby.

Police said inquiries revealed that the ute was the same one reported stolen and involved in the alleged series of danger-

A man was taken into custody at the hotel and later charged with two counts of dangerous operation of a motor vehicle and one count each of driving a motor vehicle on a disqualified licence, failing to stop motor vehicle, possessing dangerous drugs and unlawful use of a motor vehicle.

He appeared in the Charleville Magistrate Court and was remanded in custody to re-appear at a later date.

A STANTHORPE man has appeared in Warwick Magistrates’ Court on burglary and drugs charges.

Anthony Liam Panzera faced 23 charges relating to recent Stanthorpe offences including nine counts of breaking and entering, stealing and wilful damage, four counts of entry to premises with intent to commit an indictable offence, one count of entry to a premises and committing an indictable offence, two counts of wilful damage, one count of wilful destruction, one count of damaging evidence with intent, two counts of possessing a dangerous drug, one count of failing to dispose of a syringe and one count of possessing implements for unlawful entry.

The 41-year-old, who represented himself, was refused bail.

The accused was remanded in custody to reappear at Warwick Magistrates’ Court on 1 August.

He was not required to enter a plea to any charge.

Quadbike stolen POLICE are investigating the theft of a quadbike from a residence in Glen Aplin, Stanthorpe, on the afternoon of Friday 13 May. The resident reported the theft after they came home to find the chain securing the quadbike under the home in Mt Stirling Road had been cut.

Cushioning experience for breast cancer patients ZONTA Club of Warwick Inc president Jacinta Fromm presented St Andrew’s Hospital Toowoomba breast cancer ward with breast cushions recently.

The Zonta Club of Warwick Inc, also donates cushions to Toowoomba’s St Vincent’s Hospital as well as the Toowoomba Hospital.

The production of breast cushions is a Queensland wide Zonta project and Warwick club produces about 300 a year.

The breast cushions are made to specifications for the comfort of women who have surgery for breast cancer.

The Warwick cushions are made by The Women in Custody who fulfil the needs of more than the women whom they are given to.

WOODENBONG’S Remy Leonard has taken gold in the Australian Field Open Archer competition held as Sherbrooke, Victoria.

Competing against competitors of all ages and experience, the talented teenager dominated the final four shoot-out to win the gold medal.

The national title win has seen him qualify for the World Field Archery Championships to be held in Bray, near Dublin in Ireland later this year.

Field archery is different sizes of round targets in a bush setting. Saturday was Remy’s first ever unmarked field shoot, where the targets are an unknown distance away.

Because of his 3D archery experience, where the targets are also unknown distances, Remy shot well to tie for fourth place.

Sunday was a marked round with known distances but the weather decided to have a bit of fun with the competitors.

Rain and wind made conditions difficult for competitors and while Remy wasn’t too happy with how he shot he still managed to get into the shoot-off in third place.

The shoot-off was the top four archers in each category shooting three arrows at four differentsized targets.

“I shot really well in the last round and I managed to pull ahead early and won by nine points,” he said.

As always, Remy appreciates any and all assistance his community provides both now and in the future and Ireland is probably the furthest he will have travelled so far.

Foretaste of uni life SOUTHERN Downs students were among more than 400 senior high schoolers who visited USQ Toowoomba on Friday.

Year 11 and 12 high school students from across the Darling Downs and interstate participated in academic taster sessions that were tailored to study or career interests.

Topics covered on the day included what university life is like, what you can study at USQ and the benefits of pursuing a tertiary education.

Toowoomba Year 11 student Israel Escano is keen to pursue a career in biomedicine when he finishes high school.

“For me, this is a very worthwhile event as I am looking at going to university,” Mr Escano from Christian Outreach College said.

“I am not sure about specialisation yet, but looking at commencing my studies with a Biomedical Science degree here at USQ.” Vice-Chancellor and President Professor Jan Thomas welcomed the students to USQ Toowoomba.

“Moving from high school to university can be a big step, and events like USQ Student Experience Day give students the opportunity to have their questions answered,” Professor Thomas said.

“The students want to know how university is different to high school, the benefits of a degree and what to expect at USQ. “We want to help them by providing a chance to experience different areas of study and discover what life is like as a university student.

“We hope the students visiting see that our university has a welcoming and supportive environment.”

Hat from China, miner, deep sea diver EAGER readers will gather in schools, libraries, childcare centres, family homes, bookshops and many other places around the country to simultaneously read I Got This Hat on Wednesday 25 May, as part of National Simultaneous Storytime (NSS).

The annual campaign aimed at encouraging more young Australians to read and enjoy books last year saw over 500,000 children participate at over 3100 locations across Australia in the reading of The Brothers Quibble by Aaron Badley.

Warwick West School teacherlibrarian Sue Higgins praised the NSS initiative, which is organised annually by the Australian Library and Information Association.

“NSS is a vibrant, fun event that aims to promote the value of reading and literacy, using an Australian chil-

dren’s book that explores age-appropriate themes and addresses key learning areas,” she said.

With concern for flagging literacy levels in Australia, the Centre for Independent Studies earlier this year launched its ‘FIVE from FIVE’ literacy program, aimed at having all Australian children learn to read properly. The report suggests that around one million (one in four) Australian children are at risk of reading failure.

Mrs Higgins said that findings like these stressed the importance of parents making reading a priority, saying they have to be part of the push to improve Australia’s literacy levels.

West School plans to make the most of NSS by gathering as a whole school to read I Got This Hat at 11am on the big screen in the school hall.

“We will be inviting the whole

school community to come dressed in their most amazing, interesting, unique, funny, quirky, ridiculous, well-loved hats,” Mrs Higgins said.

Mrs Higgins will read the chosen text and, in the lead-up to the event, the West library will become an Amazing Hat Emporium with hats from all walks of life that tell the stories of their wearers.

“This is another exercise in putting the spotlight on reading, but it also opens opportunities for great oral stories about the how, where and why of the many different hats.”

In the lead-up to National Simultaneous Storytime, staff member Julie Payne assisted by past staff member, Leanne Olivotto will run a special presentation about the art of millinery on Tuesday 24 May in the library at lunch time.

To complement National Simultaneous Storytime and as part of Library and Information Week, West School will be holding their annual book fair from 18 to 25 May. Mrs Higgins is looking forward to the multi-function room buzzing with excitement as students navigate their way around the school’s very own book shop, stocked with loads of amazing reads for kids.

Funds to mark our cultures NSW Government funding is now available to help with community events aimed at bringing people together and celebrating cultural diversity.

The 2015/'16 Multicultural NSW Celebration Grants provide funding of up to $5000 for festivals and events that bring communities together, showcase the benefits of cultural diversity and promote social cohesion, according to member for Lismore Thomas George.

“There are so many reasons to celebrate our community’s rich cultural diversity,” Mr George said.

“The celebration grants are about supporting those important events as well as spreading important messages about cultural harmony and cohesion.

“I would encourage any non-forprofit community organisation or local council planning an event to consider applying.”

Last financial year, more than 100 local community events received funding under the celebration grants program.

Seniors, all month MOVE over Seniors Week... August is 'Seniors Month' on the Southern Downs, and the Council wants to list your event in the Southern Downs Seniors Month 2016 Calendar Events.

Seniors Week will be celebrated across the State from 13-21 August this year, with the theme 'It's on for young and old', and is an opportunity for Queenslanders of all ages to join together and celebrate the valuable contributions of older people.

Southern Downs Regional Council's Mayor, Cr Tracy Dobie said Council had again declared August to be Seniors Month in recognition of the growing support and interest by the Southern Downs community in holding seniors week events.

"Over the last few years, the sheer

number and variety of events that community groups, clubs, organisations, government agencies and even businesses have held across the region has actually outgrown Seniors Week, with many spilling either side of the official week," Mayor Dobie said.

"This level of commitment to celebrating our seniors and the valuable contribution they make to the social and cultural fabric of the Southern Downs was the catalyst to turn Seniors Week into Seniors Month in our region.

"In Seniors Month last year, there were around 40 events held by more than 25 organisations including displays and exhibitions, art demonstrations and classes, fitness, fashion parades and friendship mornings, pottery, orienteering and croquet, country, jazz, gospel and other live

music, and two seniors expos.

"It would be great to have that many events again in 2016, if not more."

Southern Downs Regional Council's Acting Manager Community Services, Mr Kerry Marsden said as part of Council's support for Seniors Month, Council coordinates and promotes a Calendar of Events. "Council is inviting community organisations, groups and clubs to get involved in Seniors Month in the Southern Downs and create an event or activity to help acknowledge how much we value the contribution of seniors to our community," she said.

"Council will list for "FREE' any event or activity in the Southern Downs Seniors Month 2016 Calendar of Events that is open to all seniors and will be held

Can’t be trusted Election 2016 is now in full swing. Over the coming weeks we will be bombarded with promises from the ALP and counter-promises from the LNP. By the end of it the public will be thoroughly bamboozled by both parties. On 2 July voters won’t be sure who they can trust as billions of dollars in promises roll off the lips of the main contenders.

Politics is a dirty game in which the main party candidates will make outlandish promises, and the day after the election they will have forgotten they ever said such-and-such.

It’s time for the public to turn away from both the ALP and LNP. Past history proves that we can’t trust them. It’s time to give independents and minor parties a go. If it wasn’t for compulsory attendance at a polling booth the public would

stay away in droves.

We have seen it here in the recent Queensland council elections wherein candidates said they would keep rates to the CPI or a rate freeze, only to vote for an increase at the first council meeting.

With a four-year term ahead of them they think the public will forget how deceitful they were.

The Feds want a four-year term too and next year will see a referendum to achieve that.

It’s time to say NO to the lot of them!

IT SEEMS to me you are not listening to the ratepayers with your four per cent increase. I know you have not been in the area very long so you probably don’t understand.

So may I suggest the CEO and the mayor sit down and discuss selling off all the big flashy family vehicles which you supply to all your head

staff as part of their salary and replace them with four-cylinder vehicles which are probably half the cost and use a lot less fuel!

Also we have enough bike and walkways around town and I am told most of your head people live in the town area, so purchase a push bike for them to ride to work which would improve a healthier staff and the small vehicles they get, these are for work purposes only.

They can purchase their own vehicle for weekend use as the ratepayer does. Even some of the councillors may take up the offer of a push bike - I don’t think that would be unfair, because our police force use push bikes on their daily rounds not to ride to work but to work an eight-hour shift.

May the money you save by not buying these large family vehicles and also savings on fuel be used for paying back the debt.

Also I would like to mention about the $5 million council borrowed to put in the water line to Allora the residents did not want. A lot of the councillors serving under the mayor raised their hands to borrow the money. So stop making the ratepayers

Riders battle for club pride Casey’s tips

THE sound of thundering hooves echoed around the rolling foothills of Killarney on the weekend as competitors from all over Queensland and down into New South Wales took to the field to battle for club pride at the town’s annual polocrosse carnival.

The A Grade final, which created much excitement along the sidelines, was fiercely contested by long standing polocrosse rivals Warwick and Tansey.

In a nail biting match, the two teams scored goal for goal for most of the game.

On this occasion, as they have been doing for much of the season so far, Tansey One came away victorious, beating Warwick by three goals, 18 to 15.

Tansey player Byron Davison, who was last week named as one of the peo-

ple selected in the Australian Under 21 Men’s Squad, was named as Best Horse and Rider in A Grade.

The home club posted some strong results making it to runners up in both D and G Grades.

The Junior Encouragement (Patrons Trophy) was awarded to Killarney player Jacinta Sillis.

Killarney Polocrosse Club had much to celebrate in 2016 with it being 60 years since the club was formed, and for the first time in recent years it has been able to field a full team of players.

Killarney Polocrosse has experienced a lot of membership growth since last year and now has 32 members made up of either life, social or playing members.

In a contrast to past year when the club had no riding members, this year has seen Killarney field at least two teams at each carnival.

Forty-five teams made the trek to the fourth carnival on the 2016 southeast Queensland calendar with more than 270 players and horses competing at the action packed event in Open, Junior and Mini Junior divisions.

A larger turnout of players than in recent years, their supporters and a big contingent of spectators at the carnival helped boost the small town’s visitor numbers to more than 400 people, bringing with it funds for the club and economic benefits for the district.

On 28 and 29 May the polocrosse action in south-east Queensland will be hosted by Lockyer Valley Polocrosse Club.

Youth takes lead Casey’s tips

By LAWRENCE SPRINGBORG “DEMOCRACY is the worst form of government, except for all those other forms that have been tried from time to time”.

This was just one of many famous and historic quotes by Winston Churchill, on this occasion delivered to the House of Commons in 1947.

It captured then, as it does now the frustration and sometimes disregard that we all, now and again feel towards our system of government. But emphatically embedded in Churchill’s dictum is the encouragement, that as we may take our democracy for granted and it may be imperfect, there are many around the world who yearn for the freedoms, liberties and opportunities it offers. lt was with this backdrop in mind, I had the privilege last week to sit down with Young Southern Downs resident, Miss Emma Ford and talk to her about what she hoped to achieve when she spends a week with 88 other young people representing all 89 State Electoral areas throughout Queensland later this year.

Emma has been chosen as the youth member for Southern Downs, to represent our area at the YMCAs annual youth parliament.

I have been privileged to represent this great part of Queensland, since I had the honour as a 21-yearold, to become the youngest person ever elected to our Parliament in 1989, an honour I still hold today.

It is through this prism that I encourage active participation in civic affairs, throughout my region by young people, regardless of their

Budding politician Emma Ford and the real thing Lawrence Springborg. and generally for the better. Access to education, health services, public safety and speed limits, are but a few examples. And as a demonstration of the evolution of changing times and expectations, the price of milk and bread, was strictly regulated when I was first elected. For contemporary young leaders like Emma, such regulations would most likely be viewed today, as historical relics.

When Emma and her young leadership group come together, they will also experience the fact, that our parliamentary democracy, by its very nature is adversarial.

This is the natural and very healthy consequence of the freedom to ex-

political views or personal aspirations.

Emma told me enthusiastically, that she and a number of other youth parliamentarians, are drafting and amending a Bill to increase the rate of organ donation. A very noble goal.

It is great to see the young leaders of today and community leaders of tomorrow, like Emma, showing such interest in how their laws are made and what sort of laws they are.

As I remind students, when I have the privilege to talk to them about my role and the role of parliament, government by necessity touches every aspect of our lives

press and hold different opinions.

Given this adversarial presentation of different ideas and views, most people are astounded to learn that roughly eight out of 10 decisions of the parliament, have the support of all sides of politics. We don’t hear about this general consensus, because you don’t argue about the things you agree on. And of course, there is not much of a controversial news story in that.

The opportunity which Emma has this year, should encourage the many hundreds of bright and enthusiastic budding young leaders, across the Southern Downs, to participate in youth parliaments next year and beyond.

Spotlight on seniors expo PREPARATIONS are underway for this year’s Annual Southern Downs Seniors Leisure and Lifestyle Expo and registrations are now open for groups and organisations keen to secure a stall.

The Seniors Leisure and Lifestyle Expo has been locked in for Thursday 18 August and will be held for the second year at the Warwick Senior Citizens Association, Corner of Albert and Guy streets, Warwick.

Southern Downs Regional Council mayor Tracy Dobie said the expo was a signature event in the Seniors Month calendar, and she encouraged people to take up the opportunity to showcase their services by registering for an expo stall.

“The expo is co-ordinated by an enthusiastic volunteer committee with support from Southern Downs Regional Council,” Cr Dobie said.

“Now in its 10th year, the expo provides a key avenue for the Southern Downs community to showcase their services, recreational and cultural activities available to those members of the community who are 55 years plus.

“Events like this offer the opportunity for seniors to access information in one location that can support them to live a vibrant and active life in their community “Past expos have featured more than 50 stalls, numerous demonstrations, entertainment and food and have attracted hundreds of people.”

Community groups, services and businesses can support the expo in a number of ways including having a display and information stall, doing some demonstrations or providing entertainment that represents their organisation’s interests or service focus.

“There are numerous benefits associated with participating in the expo, such as raising the profile of services and activities and increasing membership numbers, which supports ongoing sustainability of groups, clubs and services in the region,” she said.

“So, I would encourage people to get on board and register their place.”

To register, complete the 2016 Seniors Leisure and Lifestyle Expo Registration Form, available from the council’s website at www.sdrc.qld.gov. au; pick up a copy from the community contact centres or call the council on 1300 MY SDRC (1300 697 372).

Completed registration forms must be received by the council no later than 5pm on Thursday 21 July.

THE push for a Queensland grand final gained more traction last weekend after Suncorp hosted a rare but successful double header on Saturday. A crowd of 50,000 plus showed their support for the concept.

It was certainly a showcase event as the Cowboys and Melbourne Storm went head to head in a sensational game of rugby league.

The following game between the Sea Eagles and Broncos did not soar to such dizzying heights but Broncos fans were pleased to see their side bank another win.

The whole concept was a window to all that is great about the game of rugby league at a time when the Queensland AFL clubs are floundering.

This week league fans are again served up a mouth-watering game when the Broncos travel to Cowboys territory for what will be another epic battle, I am sure. Though it pains a Broncos supporter to say it, but I think the NQ boys will get the bikkies.

The round opens with the Dragons and Rabbitohs going head to head at ANZ on Thursday night. The Bunnies looked much better in their win over the Eels, and I expect them to get the chocolates here.

In the first of the Saturday games, the Tigers and Knights will both be desperate for a win. Both are travelling terribly, but unfortunately for Knights fans I think the Tigers might pop up with a win.

The Raiders make the trek across the ditch to take on the Warriors at Yarrow Stadium in New Plymouth.

Playing at the venue will be a new experience for many of the Raiders players and may just give the Warriors the advantage they need, but who would know which Warriors side will turn up.

After their performance last weekend against the Broncos, it is hard to see the Sea Eagles upsetting the Sharks, and I expect the Shark Park crowd will have plenty to cheer about Saturday night.

Sunday the Titans travel to Panther country and despite an outstanding win on Monday night and the inclusion of Nathan Peats in the side, I think they will find the Panthers too strong.

The Bulldogs host the Roosters on Sunday afternoon and neither side is playing to their potential. The Dogs have come under fire from all corners and I think they will have too much bite for the Roosters who were dismal on Monday night.

Round 11 wraps up with a big game between the Eels and Storm at Pirtek Stadium.

Drama continues to reign supreme around the Eels, but they are still playing good football.

However, I like the way the Storm went about their business against the Cowboys and think they will get the points here in a tough game.

Good tipping - Casey COWBOY INVASION LAST Sunday a group of Cowboys from Toowoomba took over the Inglewood Sporting Shooters range. Dressed for the event, the group including Apache Eagle; Deputy Sag; Texas Free ranger Crowbar and Chichello held a demonstration event showing just how things should be done.

Next door to them, the muzzle loaders competition was an all Dudgeon affair. Winning the event was Michael and the minor placing filled by Ray and Stephanie.

This weekend a little more law and order should prevail during Saturday afternoon and Sunday’s Pistol events.

Stanthorpe Golf

WANTIMA MAKE IT A BIG WEEKEND STANTHORPE golfers last weekend hosted visiting golfers from the Wantima Club. The visiting group on their annual pilgrimage sponsored the single stroke event on Saturday and the medley 4BBB stableford on Sunday. Matthew Burgess an up and coming young local player had the best round to date, scoring a win in the single stroke event with a local junior golfer, Matthew Burgess, who played his best round to date to win the stroke event with a nett 65 result. Runner-up in the event was Wantima visitor Brandon Mitchell.

Mitchell finished the round with a nett 67 and had the best gross for the day 69 on countback.

The honours in the Ladies event were with the local girls. Rachael Hendry finished with a nett 72 and ensuring it was a family affair Lyn Ludlow grabbed the runners-up spot with a score of nett 73.

After conceding bragging rights to the visitors last year in a challenge match, Stanthorpe were able to regain some glory by taking the Stanthorpe-Wantima challenge trophy for 2016.

Pin shots went to Len Leigh at 3/12 and William Svensen at 17. Dale Minchenton collected the ladies pin at 3/12 and Lyn Ludlow had best approach at 17. Pro-pins went to Matt Waterworth at 1/10, Dylan Barraclough at 5/14 and William Svensen at 9/18.

Mark McCosker deserves special mention for his round. You could have been forgiven for thinking he was playing poker - his card when read 3, 4, 5, 6, 8 and 9. Not quite a winning hand - Missing a straight by just a seven. Back on golf his back nine of 42 was better than the front nine 52.

Committed players took to the course in Sunday 4BBB stableford event, some sporting their fair share of headaches. (Something they ate.

Visitors Aubrey Testa and Jack Wilkosz led the way for the team Wantima proving too good for the locals to win with 46 points.

To add insult to injury, it was the same story for the runner’s-up spot when the team of Simon Button and Craig Boal narrowly edged out the local pairing of Kay Webb and Bill Pyne. Both teams finished on 44 points, however the visitors got the nod.

Luke Reardon picked up the pin at 1/10 and 9/18 pro-pins. The Testa Button combination won the pins at 3/12 and 17 with Aubrey Testa and Simon Button winning the pins at 3/12 and 17.

It was a great weekend of golf and the Stanthorpe Club is grateful to the visitors and hope that it was a memorable weekend in Stanthorpe, and the club looks forward to your return visit next year if not sooner. This Saturday is the third round of the club championships. Tee times for the final two rounds will be seeded. The draw has been completed and is on display at the club. Tee off from 11am. Players are asked to ensure they are on time for their tee off.

QCC SENT PACKING THE Queensland Cricketers Club Over 40s side were sent home with their tail between their legs after the Warwick side were convincing winners of the annual Over 40s clash.

The Warwick side retains the Bill Hoiberg Trophy as the local teams continue their dominance over the visitors having won six of the past seven games.

In perfect conditions at Slade Oval, Warwick opened the batting and were off to a flyer before opener Jeff Morris (37) was dismissed shortly after the first drinks break with the score on 75.

The local side pushed the score along with the second wicket falling at 110 and the third at 123.

Chris Cantwell chimed in with 33 runs off 21 balls late in the innings. QCC were set a hefty 206- run target.

The visitors began well but lost opener Peter Clifford for 20. After drinks, Jamie Holmes claimed his second wicket when Darren Santer was caught by Chris Cantwell. Wickets fell steadily following that dismissal and QCC were dismissed for 168 well short of the required total.

Man of the Match was Warwick batsman Darren Byrne who scored 48 not out.

Despite the hefty loss QCC organiser Nev Taylor has vowed his side will be back next year with an eye on the elusive trophy.

Recent conditions have been ideal for gateball and players have been taking full advantage of the unusually mild Granite Belt autumn weather.

Many players however found it difficult to judge the speed of the court last week with a lot of balls flying over the boundary line.

Team games were the order of the day. Margaret Dickenson captained one team and Val Schnoor the other.

Schnoor won the coin toss and elected to play first (i.e. the red balls), usually a good tactic. Normally, it allows the team to set up and “guard“ in front of gate two after passing the first gate.

Results however went the way of Margaret Dickenson’s White team for the most part.

White won the first game 14 - 6 and the second 12 - 8. They chalked up another 10-8 win after the break before Schnoor’s team finally grabbed an 18-10 win in the final game Justin Liddy, Teresa Pyne, Val Fancourt and Elaine Brown attended the court on Internation Croquet Day for a social game.

HAMSPTEAD RUNAWAY WINNER MEMBERS and guests played a single stableford at Wallangarra last Saturday. Steven Hampstead continued his recent good form and ran away with yet another event. On his way to a two under gross (43 points), he picked up four of the six pins on offer. The crumbs were left for Shane Purcell who grabbed a pin at three and Michael Cusack at 15.

Jamie Purcell finished the round in place with Alan Lutter and Brendan McMillan sharing third place. Mick Hurtz won the jackpot on hole seven and spies tell us the bar is still open on the shout.

This Saturday the club is hosting the Frank Hodgson Memorial Day a single stableford event.

Golfers and non-golfers alike, put a note in your diary - 12 June is the annual charity day for breast cancer.

Historically, this has been a great day with plenty of prizes and fun for all. All proceeds from the day are donated to this great cause. Further information will be available closer to the date COOL CONDITIONS; HOT FORM THE temperature may have been cooler, however the form of Jenny Tunbridge was red hot in last week’s association golf croquet games. Tunbridge pegged out with 26 in her game against Carol Verwey and Effey Russell claiming a big win. The game between Pat Schnoor and Andrea Denkewitz was somewhat closer with Pat pegging out 26-18 for victory.

Organisers are delighted that the ranks are continuing to build at golf croquet Last week the group opened the day with triples. Teresa Pyne, Val Fancourt and Elaine Brown scored a 13-4 win over 13 against Judy Lock and Shirley Page. Teresa Pyne was 37 in good form, her top score of seven hoops included a hoop in one. The second group played doubles and Justin Liddy and Di Wren claimed a 13-8 win over Marion Castle and Bill Golding.

After the break in a social game, newcomers Justin Liddy and Marian Castle showed they have adapted well to the game with some fine performances In fact Liddy was the player of the day scoring 17 hoops overall during the day’s play.

BRAGGING RIGHTS TO ANDERSON IAN Anderson took the bragging honours last Sunday at Sporters with Jim Mitchell once again left carrying the bouquet - bridesmaid again.

The run-downs went to Chook and Mark Lynam. Lynam finished the round with the Best Gross and rounded out the day by taking the Pro Pin as well. No one claimed the pin shot on the 12th but the 17th went the way of Ray Thorn 17th went to Ray Thorn. Clarky and Dick Hilton each left with a meat tray in hand.

With the arrival of Mr Jack Frost tee off time will now be pushed back to the later start time of between 8.30 and 9am.

REASON TO CELEBRATE THE Warwick Cowboys A Grade and Reserve both scored wins at Fr Ranger Oval as the club snatched back the lead in the club championship race. It also gave patrons there to celebrate the 30th Anniversary a couple more reasons to celebrate.

The A Grade side posted a big win over Pittsworth to cap off a memorable evening. Warwick took a convincing 16-6 lead to the half time break.

A glut of possession in the second half allowed the home side to go on with the job and they ran away with the game posting a 50-12 win.

As Souths moved to the outright lead at the top of the TRL rankings, Saturday’s win over Pittsworth has confirmed the Warwick Cowboys as real premiership contenders in 2016.

Former Killarney player Mick Bloomfield looked to have the ball on a string in the game scoring two great tries. He also kicked five goals in what was a Man of the Match effort. Experienced players Dylan Galloway and Matt Marshall led from the front while young guns Josh O’Brien and the inform Brock Croft both played their part in the impressive win. It was a clinical win by the Cowboys and the club president David O’Leary could not have been happier with the performance as the club celebrated their 1986 premiership win.

The Under 18 Cowboys side suffered their first loss of the season when they gave up a 16-12 half time lead in their game against South Burnett. The visitors put on tries early in the second half and held on to win 28-22. The Warwick Second Division side was beaten by Pittsworth 28-10 in the opening game of the day.

PICNICS POPULAR AT ALLMAN PARK THE Warwick Turf Club held another successful meeting at Allman Park on Saturday. The annual Picnic meeting drew a big crowd with plenty of visitors travelling from Brisbane for the popular meeting.

Toowoomba jockey Ron Goltz took the riding honours with a double. Goltz opened the meeting with a win on Man Overboard for Oakey trainer Gary Maroney. It was a big form turn around for the five-year-old who finished last at his previous start in Dalby.

Goltz made it a double for the day when he piloted home the Toowoomba trained It’s All Irish in race four the Bill and Margaret Hoiberg Memorial Benchmark 55 H’cap over 1350 metres.

Trained by Donald Baker the four-year-old gelding by Fastnet Rock put the writing on the wall at his last start in Gatton and was well supported by punters on Saturday.

Hashtag Yolo made it back-to-back wins for his connections with a win in the second event.

The four-year-old trained in Oakey by Dale Murray started at the good odds of $5 despite coming off winning form in Chinchilla at his last start.

FORM SIDES WINNERS IN BRL THE two form teams of the BRL competition this season Tenterfield and Inglewood both notched up wins last weekend. There was no joy for the Stanthorpe / Texas side who played their first home game at Sullivan Oval this season. They were soundly beaten by Inglewood who led 48-0 at half time. The visitors outclassed their opponents and went on to an 86-16 win in the second half.

The Stanthorpe Texas side have the bye this weekend.

The Border Bushrangers Under 18 side also palyed at Sullivan Oval on Saturday, taking on Dalby but could not repeat their good form of their previous game and were beaten 32-12.

In Tenterfield the Tigers extended their unbeaten run this season with a 38-16 win over arch rivals Wallangarra in the local derby.

CANINE MAGIC LATE last year, we brought you the tale of the two travelling canines belonging to Peter Bonner of Aloomba lavender. The pair of Liston tail waggers took themselves off on an adventure and were all but given up for dead when they eventually found their way home a bit the worse for wear and are probably still under house arrest.

Their tale almost paled into insignificance when we learnt of the recent exploits of Ziggy a very brave 16-month-old Dane/Bullarab cross.

Recently Ziggy was short chained inside the tray of a utility when she lunged at a passing Linfox B Double heading to Inglewood. The ute was heading to Glenarbon. The shackle pin came out and Ziggy carried on sailing, all 50 kilos of her overboard. Colliding with the semi she was bounced back into the ute.

As if two 100 kilometre an hour impacts were not enough, the next was onto the bitumen.

Somehow Ziggy clambered to her feet and took off across paddocks and disappeared.

Despite 10 days of searching, there was no sign of her, or tracks at any waterhole nearby.

After being given up for dead, she amazed her owners 17 days later by crawling up the steps of their verandah and into her kennel on Saturday afternoon.

No-one knows where she was or how she got home but she weighed in at just 32 kilos. You can imagine she would face feral pigs, foxes, dingoes, and crows along the way all trying to make a meal of her.

She is currently undergoing treatment at Border Veterinary Surgery for a fractured hip, chipped knuckle which will probably be removed, infection and many other grazes.

One devoted dog to crawl back home after 17 days and in obvious agony with a temperature of 39 as a result of infection. If you would like to follow Ziggy’s progress check out her recently set up Facebook page - Ziggy the Bitch.

WARWICK EAST BOWLS On Sunday we held our usual barefoot bowls and sausage sizzle. The next barefoot bowls will be held on Sunday 5 June.

As a result there will be Saturday afternoon mixed social bowls on the next two weekends. Play starts at 1pm with names in by 12.30pm.

Thursday next week will be our monthly Red Rooster Triples. If you would like a game, phone the club on 4661 9050 between 10.45am and 11.30am. Play starts at noon. Regular skips ensure you have a full team and notify the club if your team is unable to play.

The club had a beautiful morning for shooting, with light winds and little mirage. Margaret had a great shoot, scoring a personal best, with Bruce and Mary also getting their best scores yet, well done. PREMIER DARTS Last Tuesday, Mick has been continuing his winning streak with another three wins, 6x80s and eight tons. Also Tori won all of her games with high peg of 113. Brett won all his games with 3x80s and five tons and adding another 180 to his tally. Also Richard managed to play all of his singles and winning them as well with 10x80s and six tons. Kyle did some great scoring with 9x80s and eight tons, but had trouble finishing and settled for three pegs.

On Thursday Don’t Know beat Young Ones by 6-3. Best player was Warren; seven tons and four pegs.

Just Us beat 2+2 by 7-2. Best player was Mark with seven tons and five pegs.

Next Saturday will be social darts on as usual from 11.30am.

Everyone is welcome to come in for a game.
