No fails on rails By ANEEKA SIMONIS MULTIPLE reports of boom gate and signalling failures at a notorious Pakenham level crossing have been dismissed by Public Transport Victoria (PTV). At least one of the incidents was reported to have resulted in a frightening near-miss between a motorist and an oncoming train, however that report - and all subsequent reports - have turned up no evidence of system failure, according to the transport network. The Gazette first made inquiries to PTV following a reported near-miss involving a mum who allegedly slammed on her brakes to avoid being hit by an oncoming train as she drove through the level crossing with her young son in the car in late April. “As she had slowed to about 50km/h to go over the bumpy crossing she was lucky enough to be able to slam on her brakes and stop. The train also applied its brakes,” the motorist’s mother reported. “No lights or boom gates activated.” A PTV spokesperson checked with both Metro and V/Line, finding there were no reports of the boom gates not activating at the location. Several reports of boom gate related failures have been reported to the Gazette since, including the most recent report involving a V/Line train during the chaotic, morning peak on Monday 16 May. It was reported the boom gates and lights failed to activate for the train. Instead, the train approached the level crossing slowly and waited for motorists to stop before passing through before 7.30am that morning. However, that too did not happen according to PTV which reported receiving no customer complaints over the alleged incident. “There was no malfunction of the level crossing signalling system at McGregor Road and the train entered and
exited the crossing safely,” the spokesperson said. “The level crossing activated correctly, lowering and raising the boom gates to allow safe passage of the train.” However, a number of witnesses claimed to have reported the incident to PTV, with a number taking to social media to further voice their concerns. “As soon as I said Pakenham (to the PTV customer complaint spokesperson), she straight away said, 'the one at McGregor?’ I also informed her that it’s a frequent occurrence of them failing and that school children are in danger. She informed me that a technician is going out there today to have a look at them,” one resident claimed on social media. The Gazette has made subsequent inquiries into PTV’s record-keeping system as a result of repeat incongruences. On a previous occasion, the Gazette was asked to specify which phone line a report was made to. It was revealed that the motorist had called a complaint phone line which was too busy to take her call, instead asking her to leave a message about the incident which was not returned. Following the Monday 16 May incident, the Gazette asked PTV if all messages recorded on the complaint line were monitored when surveying possible problems on the rail network. The Gazette did not receive a response. The only explanation PTV did provide about the recent incident was that McGregor Road is fitted with a protection signal which permits a train to be held prior to the crossing, with the boom gates open. “This sequence of events is part of normal operation of the signalling system and poses no safety risk,” the spokesperson said. However, this does not account for trains passing through the level crossing unaided by boom gates and signals.

Bus stop bust up draws police in

POLICE were called to the scene of a brawl at a Pakenham bus stop. Police arrived at a bus stop in Station Street, Pakenham, at about 4pm on Thursday 12 May in response to reports of a “punch on“. Those involved had fled the scene before police arrived.
THE State Government has announced the allocation of $13 million towards building a new primary school in Officer. The Gum Scrub Creek Primary School would be designed by ClarkeHopkinsClarke, Eastern Victoria Region MP Daniel Mulino said as he announced the funding as part of the Victorian Budget 2016-’17. The construction of Gum Scrub Creek Primary School is one of 12 new schools to be built across the state before 2018. Victoria is experiencing unprecedented population growth, with an expected increase of 300,000 new students by 2031. Mr Mulino said Gum Scrub Creek primary would give local families “greater peace of mind”. “This new school will meet the needs of Officer’s growing community,” he said. “It will give local parents and families the certainty they need and make sure their kids have the facilities they deserve. “By investing locally, the Andrews Labor Government is making sure every community in Victoria has great schools and every child gets the chance to succeed.” Mr Mulino said the Budget provided for the investment needed to build and acquire land for 23 new schools. Education Minister James Merlino said he was looking forward to visiting the site.
Commuters hit by signal delays A SIGNAL fault delayed services along the Gippsland line last Wednesday morning. A V/Line spokesperson said the fault was reported near Caulfield station just before 10am. The 9.15am Southern Cross to Traralgon train was delayed by 60 minutes with the train terminated at Moe and coaches replacing the service for the remainder of the journey. The fault also caused a 35-minute delay to the 10.20am Southern Cross to Traralgon train, with buses running from Morwell. The 12.20pm Traralgon to Southern Cross and 1.16pm Traralgon to Southern Cross services were also impacted. “The issue was rectified about 11.20am,“ the spokesperson said. “No further service changes are expected after the 1.16pm service.“ Customers delayed by more than 60 minutes can claim compensation for their journey by calling 1800 800 007. Call to combine help from volunteer army
CARDINIA Shire Council has begun removing 3.5km of unauthorised mountain bike tracks in Hillview Bushland Reserve, Pakenham. Hillview Bushland Reserve is protected as a conservation reserve under a Trust for Nature Covenant. It is home to rare, endangered and protected plants including the wine-lipped spider orchid and cobra greenhood; orchid species make up 20 per cent of vegetation in the 50 hectare reserve. Council’s Natural Resource planner Rob Jones said it was disappointing that the indigenous and native vegetation was being put at risk by these unauthorised tracks. “The flora and fauna in this area is rare and very valuable, and the reserve was created to conserve the plants and animals. Creating these mountain bike paths and jumps vandalise the environment and is a significant safety risk,” he said. “We encourage visitors to keep to the paths provided, enjoy the environment responsibly and contact council if you see any damage occurring.” Council has installed signage to identify tracks to be removed and revegetated. Penalties apply for the unauthorised excavation of public land.

A GROUNDSWELL of struggling Casey families are facing an unappetising dilemma - to feed their kids or pay their soaring rent, says a charity leader. Pastor Keith Vethaak, who runs Transit Food Support in Narre Warren, says hundreds of parents are being referred by school principals to the outreach service for help. “They are really concerned, seeing students come to school with no breakfast and no lunch. “We’re finding it’s a huge growing area - parents whose rents have gone through the roof and their incomes have not gone up.” Mr Vethaak says it’s hard for families - with take-home pay as low as $600 a week - to find suitable accommodation under $400 a week. The shortage of affordable housing makes it hard to make ends meet, he says. “People are now lining up outside the building before we open. We just have hundreds coming through.” On Thursdays, the charity offers up to $100 of groceries including fresh food and veg-

Hundreds of socks will also be handed out, thanks to recent donations from Berwick’s Bendigo Bank staff and customers. Some bank staff have also recently helped with dishes and handing out food supplies at the kitchen. They are among about 100 Transit volunteers. Mr Vethaak says the outreach service helps about 1000 individuals - or 300 families - a week. The service is packed on Mondays and Wednesdays as it dishes about 200 three-course hot meals - soup, main and dessert. Transit has had to limit its dinners to one a week per per-
son to meet the swelling demand. It’s enough to help the diners - some who are homeless - to get through the week. “There’s a large social aspect as people sit down to have a meal,” Mr Vethaak says. “These people really do care about each other.” The service has been run by Narre Warren Christian Church for the past seven years. It sources food from charity Avocare and growers in the Clyde and Kooweerup food bowl. More donations of fresh fruit and vegetables are welcome, Mr Vethaak says. AN ICE-addict who persistently breached intervention orders has been jailed for 14 months to “push the reset button”. Police observed the 27-yearold man wrestling with an expartner as she attempted to jump from a footbridge in Endeavour Hills on 15 February, a court was told. The man had been barred from any contact with the victim - including going within 200 metres of her home - for five years from January 2015. He had only been released from jail for the same breaches less than two weeks before the incident. A defence lawyer told Dandenong Magistrates’ Court on Tuesday 16 May the man was trying to stop the victim from jumping. Magistrate Jack Vandersteen pondered on how the pair started arguing, what they were arguing about and how that led to the incident. On 17 April, the accused wrestled for five minutes with four police officers who tried to remove him from his mother’s

ABOUT 250 creditors including tradies, suppliers, customers and employees are owed millions of dollars as a result of the shock liquidation of Hallam-based boutique builders Botanic Homes. The award-winning company – which advertises luxury display homes in Officer, Narre Warren North, Clyde North, Lysterfield and other parts of Melbourne – was put in administration on 3 May. Jason Stone of the administrators PKF Melbourne said it is too early to say how much of the estimated $4-5 million of debt will be recouped by creditors. Mr Stone said the Hallam South Road business had been taken by “surprise” by its financial demise. There had been “really good”
forward projections but the company “couldn’t get over the short-term hurdle”, he said. “The cash flow shortage seemed to creep up on them and they were just not able to find a way out of it.” Botanic Homes’ assets included properties ranging from land lots to complete display homes. Many of those properties had bank loans on them and Mr Stone said that they should show a cash “surplus” when they were sold. PKF Melbourne was also dealing with a number of interested parties to acquire the business assets. Mr Stone said there didn’t seem to be any impropriety involved in Botanic Homes’ fall but that would be part of his ongoing investigation. Directors Craig Garvey and Robert Bender could be personally pursued for some debts, having

made personal guarantees for some supplier debts and other items, Mr Stone said. Star News has heard unverified stories of creditors owed up to $250,000, and a couple’s under-construction home being “trashed” by tradies not paid by Botanic Homes. Housing Industry Association state director Gil King said consumers covered by domestic building insurance were protected. “The domestic building insurance, often referred to as ‘junk insurance’ is in place specifically for circumstances like this. “As with most if not all insurance products you hope that you never need to use it but it is comforting to know it is there when needed.” Botanic Homes’ website has been stripped of content, its Facebook page taken down and its office
phone on message bank. According to testimony from former Small Business Minister Bruce Billson – now taken down from the website – the company had employed 30 people. It provided “strong business to dozens of service providers and trades people”. “It takes real courage and belief to enter the market against established volume builders,” the testimony states. “But that is what Botanic Homes did.” Botanic Homes was founded in 2008. Its designs have won 2013 awards from Masters Builders Victoria and the Housing Industry Association. Star News attempted to contact Botanic Homes for comment.

By GEORGIA WESTGARTH AND ANEEKA SIMONIS WHEN it comes to contempt for law enforcement officers, Casey isn’t far behind Dandenong’s excessive assault figures. Victoria Police crime statistics show a disturbing rate of assaults on paramedics, police and protective services officers (PSOs) across Casey, Dandenong and Cardinia. Last year, there were 240 reported cases of police assault in the region. Exactly half of the assaults occurred in the Greater Dandenong area, which recorded 121 policetargeted attacks. Casey recorded 97 police assaults while Cardinia recorded almost a fifth of that total with 22
assault reports. Paramedics were also a target for assault last year. Five emergency workers in Dandenong reported being assaulted on the job and a further three assault reports were lodged in the Casey region. Alarmingly, paramedic abuse and assault rates jumped by almost a quarter in the past five years to the extent that some homes are now ‘blacklisted’ - not to be entered before police arrived on scene. The majority of those homes are located in the south-east, including Dandenong (34), Cranbourne (22), Noble Park (15), Hampton Park (11), Narre Warren (10) and Pakenham (9). IT IS astounding that City of Casey Mayor Sam Aziz and the rest of the councillors are hammering VicRoads for graffiti on the Monash Freeway when they don’t have their own house in order. Cr Aziz says “we have a policy of responding to reported graffiti within 24 hours” but Frawley Road bridge in Hallam, John Pandazopoulos Hall, several bus stops around Casey and several council owned signs have had graffiti on them for months. I MUST ask what sort of support Mayor Sam Aziz is getting now? I cannot believe a Casey City mayor would write about “presenting accurate facts” and then get things so wrong. I understand it must have been a very busy term and some of the councillors don’t appear to have consulted much with the community over the past three years but I would expect they would all be properly briefed. I must add that I admire the good work of the vast majority of council employees, they are dedicated and passionate about this municipality. I attended the December 2015 consultation on the rate cap issue (I knew nothing of a consultation in October) and my record is that of the 45 people present in December only two supported the council proposal to apply for an increase above the rate cap. The majority there wanted the rate cap. Generally people there were critical of the three projects the council had nominated, the lack of any earlier consultation on anything over the last few years and the absence of any council presence at the consultation after the opening. Since that consultation the vast majority of people I have spoken to, who know anything about the matter, want rates here capped and our council to be more efficient and comparable with our neighbours. It’s None Of Our Business But ... PERFORMERS at Casey Council events couldn’t say they were exactly drowning in royalties. Councillor Wayne Smith pointed out at a council meeting on 17 May that local performers were being paid as little as $50 for a gig - sometimes split between up to three group members. He said it was not fair payment for performers who are trained, provide their own instruments and equipment and, in some cases, are performing for their livelihoods. The ultimate insult was for performers being expected to play at council events simply for the “honour”. “It’s like councillors being honoured to serve without compensation for their efforts,” Cr Smith said.
Council officers will report back on a “fair and equitable” payment rate. SOME guys seem to have all the excuses for not attending court. A defence lawyer told Dandenong Magistrates’ Court that his client was unavailable to face court because of “substantial grief” for his recently-deceased grandmother. He also had a medical certificate stating he was too unwell to work for the past two weeks. The lawyer also asked the court to bear in mind that the accused was planning to get married on 23 May, with a week’s honeymoon to follow. “I know it seems remarkable,” the lawyer said. The judge said with some incredulity: “So
we’re told he’s so unwell he can’t attend court yet he’s being married on Monday.” A police prosecutor said officers had tried to check if the accused had been working despite his ‘illness’. Unfortunately, the man’s employers had not been co-operative, the prosecutor said. The judge said it had got to the point that the matter had to proceed - and shifted it to another magistrate to hear that day. HERE’S a stark reminder of the lack of emergency housing in the south-east. A Dandenong magistrate told a lawyer that there was no long-term accommodation available for their client. “It’s usually just the Prince of Mark motel for two nights.”

A HALLAM company has won a $2 million contract to supply and install the eye-catching roof on Bunjil Place arts and civic centre. Barden-Steeldeck Industries was selected by competitive tender to deliver the complex 10,000 squaremetre roof which is regarded as the defining element of the $126 million building. Manager Michael Shacklock was not over-awed by the complex geometry - which includes three levels and two arcing ‘eagle’ wings that meet in a ‘tongue’ on the building’s western corner. “We try to specialise in the outof-the-ordinary,” he said. Mr Shacklock said installers would abseil to work on Bunjil’s winged elements. It’s a low-risk, tested method of working on the bespoke-design roof’s highly-variant gradients and its curved-over front, he said. Aluminium will be used for the roof’s most curved and tapered sections and the rest will be the more standard Colourbond steel. Barden-Steeldeck has been involved in many of Melbourne’s modern landmarks including the undulating Southern Cross railway station roof - a project feted with architectural awards - and Casey RACE. The business has gone from strength to strength since four employees including Mr Shacklock bought it in 2006. It has a workforce of 52. Drive to make a difference ELAINE Smith, the founder and driving force behind the Women’s Friendship Cafe in Hampton Park, is Casey’s volunteer of the year. The City of Casey recognised the groups and individuals who enrich the community and lives of others through their volunteering efforts at the 2016 Casey Volunteer Awards on Friday 13 May. The council hosted an awards ceremony at the Lynbrook Community Centre during National Volunteer Week. The Friendship Cafe provides a safe and welcoming environment for women from all cultural backgrounds to relax, make friends, share experiences, learn new ideas and skills and find pathways to connect to services and opportunities. Mayor Sam Aziz said Elaine’s commitment to new migrants, asylum seekers, refugees and their families is evident in her work at the café. Many lives have been enriched thanks to her volunteering efforts. Jery Burniston was named the young volunteer of the year. Jery has been an active volunteer member of the Casey Youth Action Committee for two years. He is also a member of the Unite Alliance and has worked tirelessly in this group to run events and raise awareness around issues for same sex attracted and gender diverse young people in Casey and surrounds. Jery also volunteers with Man Cave, a mentoring program for boys aged 13-17. Jery has taken on a leadership and mentoring role in this program where he encourages young people who need support, boosts team morale and helps staff with the organisation and delivering of events. Jery is also the SRC representative at his school.
Fourteen-year-old Kathleen Foley was highly commended in the youth category. The group award went to the Narre Warren State Emergency Service. The Narre Warren SES is the primary response agency for flood and storm events across the City of Casey. While state offices are staffed, the local unit is run solely by volunteers. The unit responds to more than 500 requests for assistance each year and is on call 24 hours a day, seven days a week. The Casey Volunteering Pair Award went to Christopher Morgan and Vanessa Watson. Vanessa and Christopher work hard to put on events for the Lynbrook community and surrounds. In the past few years they have hosted several big and small free events including the Holi Festival of Colours, Lynbrook Lake Lantern Festival, Halloween in the Park, Pancake Day, Moonlight Cinema, Christmas Movie and Carols and Clean

spired by Vanessa and Christopher. South East Palliative Care won the Casey Volunteer Organisation Award. The volunteers at South East Palliative Care are a diverse group, made up of dedicated people who have a passion for improving the lives of clients and carers with life-limiting illness. Approximately 50 volunteers perform a valuable service in the community, including roles in family support, administration, ambassadors and bereavement support. The volunteers support more than 780 clients, multiple carers and approximately 50 staff. St Vincent de Paul’s Berwick Soup Van was highly commended.

Just marvellous By CAM LUCADOU-WELLS THERE’S a force building with Casey’s underworld of fans for comics, sci-fi, super heroes, action figures and video games. Roy Condeza, who is organising the first pop-culture mini-convention for the region on 28 May, says there’s no shortage of collectors in the south-east growth corridor. The movement in Casey started as a trade day. It has blossomed into an event expected to attract up to 500 local and interstate collectors. It will include a swap meet of collectibles as well as video games for play, cosplay which is short for costume play, club sign ups and custom artists of toys and comics. Mr Condeza says the region’s plentiful pop-culture collectors are starved of such opportunities. There are no nearby retailers, and few hubs to meet - outside of a Berwick Market vintage toy stall and social media, he says. The Narre Warren collector’s specimens start with 1980s Masters of the Universe figures such as He-Man and Skeletor. It has evolved to about 6000 items including books and a newest customised version of Castle Grayskull. “It’s small compared to the biggest collections but I’m happy to say my entire collection hasn’t been bought on e-Bay. “I’ve done the hard yards of garage sales and toy meets.” When pressed on how his passion has endured, he says there’s a special thrill in acquiring a new collectible. “There’s a couple of guys who when they get their hands on a comic, they won’t talk to you. They just want to sit and read it straightaway.” Unlike some collectors, Mr Condeza is an “opener” - meaning he’s not scared to take his action figures out of the box. “As soon as you open the box, straightaway 50 per cent or more of its value is reduced. “But I want to sit down one day and have

For the record, Mr Condeza’s a fan of the Batman v Superman flick that has been rejected by 1970s vintage-superhero followers. But it’s a debate in which the pre-teen upand-comers “hold their own” against their elders. “We’re loving it, celebrating that it’s evolving to something more realistic,” Mr Condeza says. THE stark odds are that in every classroom, one in five children has a parent with mental illness. Community health organisations Windermere Child and Family Services and EACH offer a support program that helps destigmatise mental health in primary schools in Melbourne’s south east. EACH regional manager Lisa Gort said that the Supporting Kids in Primary Schools (SKIPS) program provides a “language� to understand and talk about the issue. “If you’ve got a mum dying with cancer, the school community understands it,� Ms
Gort said. “But if mum or dad has mental health issues and you’re not getting to school on time, that’s a harder thing to understand. “Sometimes we’re well physically and unwell mentally. The question is how we support parents and children in this situation.� The program is an earlyintervention model - working in classrooms, parent info sessions and workshops for teachers. The topic is broached directly, demythologised by speakers who have “lived experience�. It gives tools for schools and parents to support children and families affected by mental illness.
“Studies show where there’s a parent with a mental illness that there’s a high possibility that their child has a similar disposition. “If there’s not that support there’s a high chance they may go on and have a mental issue of their own.� The EACH program has so far been held in more than a dozen Casey-Cardinia primary schools including Cranbourne Park, Cranbourne West, Rangebank and Garfield. PAKENHAM resident John Van Vugt has been delivering the Pakenham News for nine years and speaks proudly about how it has improved his health. “It gets me out to do my exercise. People tend to take me for someone in the middle of their 60s and I’m nearly 78,” he said with a laugh. Though John has been trekking around the community as a walker for nearly a decade, he was first involved in delivering papers 30 years ago when he was co-ordinating his local round. “They used to drop them all off at my place then I had about 15 walkers and I had to ring them up and get them to pick them up from my place, then I had to supervise them,” he said. After having back surgery, John was advised to keep active, a directive he has embraced and taken great pleasure from. “I had a back operation and I had to have my back fused. The doctor said to get out and walk so I rang up and got myself two rounds to do and now I’m a lot more involved because I do a lot of bulk drops. “I deliver the real estate sections to the agents, I go to different shopping centres, all the retirement villages and YMCA, you name it, I’ll do the whole lot,” he said. Living in the Cardinia Waters retirement village, John delivers the Pakenham News weekly and couples this with daily strolls to maintain his fitness. “I’ll walk four to five kilometres, maybe more every Thursday delivering the papers. “I live in Cardinia Waters which is a big retirement village, and I walk around that two to three times a day,” he said. And after reaping the benefits of being active, John said he has no intention of slowing down. “I’ll keep on going till my legs say no,” he said. Crest of a wave By GEORGIA WESTGARTH THEY are record-breaking fishermen who are ensuring that Victorians can stay on the water safely. The Tooradin Marine Boat Licence course has a much lower failure rate than the VicRoads online equivalent. Organiser Bob O’Connell said the local classroom taught course appeals to all ages. “Our teacher Gordon Sanders has put 35,000 people through the marine licence course in 14 years - that’s the most in the state,” Mr O’Connell said. “We’ve only had one failure and he came in drunk,” he said, laughing. The success of the face-toface course has spread far and
wide over the years and even kept one happy boater in his house. “He was 86 years old, from Inverloch and he had his boat up for sale because he had failed the VicRoads test three times,” Mr O’Connell said. “His wife ended up doing our course as well and he put his arm around us and said, ‘you’ve just given us 10 more years on the water’. “He withdrew his house from the market and kept his boat so our course completely changed his mind.” The three-hour lecture and 40 question test is run out of the Tooradin Public Hall on the last Wednesday of the month. Mr O’Connell said people from Ballarat, Echuca, Bairns-
dale and even Western Australia have made special trips to do the course. “It’s been so successful for people my age who didn’t grow up with a computer in their hands,” he said. “But also for the younger generation who haven’t had the experience out on a boat, they get first-hand knowledge explained to them. “Often it’s the 12-year-olds who beat their parents!” The cost of the Tooradin Marine Boat Licence course had stayed the same for 14 years but recently it increased from $70 to $90. However it was still significantly cheaper than other classroom boat courses, Mr O’Connell said.

Diversity spreads the talent THE ever-evolving media landscape is in good hands if the calibre of grant recipients in the 2016 Herb Thomas Memorial Trust Awards is any indication, Star News Group managing director Paul Thomas told a presentation dinner. Responding on behalf of his family, Mr Thomas said the five awardees not only spoke and presented themselves well but displayed a depth of talent across all media platforms. He said the media industry was becoming more diverse every day and journalists needed to be able to adapt to the many mediums people now used to digest their news. The award recipients at the Wednesday 4 May event were RMIT graphic design student Maria Vinogradova, RMIT journalism graduate Mark Kearney, Monash University journalism graduates Anna Harcourt, Nardine Groch and Sally Hayles. The trustees Roger Hall, George Blenkhorn, Gary Evans, Terry Williams and Mike Tyler were joined by Paul’s father Ian interviewing the 10 candidates. They also reflected on the high standard this year. Ms Vinogradova grew up in Russia with a passion for music and the arts. She attended music college and university in Russia and decided on a change of career when moving to Australia. She enrolled in a Certificate IV in design at RMIT and has not looked back. “In Australia I saw that it is never too late to change your career and try something new, or to dare to pursue one’s dreams,” she said. Ms Vinogradova intends to use the grant money to upgrade her computer to enable her to complete more complex work and to participate in a range of workshops and conferences to hone her skills. She would eventually like to return

Mr Kearney also had a career change, opting to study journalism at RMIT after six years teaching in schools across Melbourne and in London. Late last year he joined the newsroom at the Bendigo Advertiser and said he loves the connection with the community and social responsibility that the job brings. “It really satisfies me in a way my previous career did not,” he said. “I love that every day is different and I love that I can bring my interests and expertise into the workplace, finding stories that relate to education, social
justice and the arts,” he said. He said he would splint the grant money between buying a camera and sound recording equipment - the latter to pursue his passion for longer form reporting, particularly podcasting. For Ms Harcourt, the grant money fulfils a more basic requirement - buying groceries and paying the rent. The New Zealander knows how to keep busy, supplementing her undergraduate degree in Monash University’s School of Media Film and Journalism with countless internships. In her limited spare time, she also helped conceive an online dating podcast called It’s a Match.
Ms Harcourt said there was a three month stint where she did not have a day off and she was not paid for the bulk of that time. “The reality of the journalism industry is that it is impossible to get a job without multiple internships under your belt,” she explained. “I don’t say that as a complaint… the experience and exposure I get through these internships is invaluable.” She loves broadcast journalism and aims to land a job as a television reporter within a year. Ms Groch, a post graduate student at Monash’s School of Media Film and Journalism, describes herself as an envi-
ronmental journalist and videographer who has already travelled the world to pursue her passion. She spent her final semester of a double masters’ degree in Journalism and Environmental Sustainability as an accredited freelance journalist at the COP21 climate change conference in Paris where she rubbed shoulders not only with 3000 colleagues from around the world but also with the likes of US president Barack Obama. “I took a photo of Barack Obama with the same lens I used to take a photo of a polar bear,” she told guests at the trust dinner. Ms Groch has supplemented her studies by working as a wildlife photographer with Zoos Victoria for the past seven years. She would like to use the trust money to study a masters of wildlife filmmaking at the University of the West of England in Bristol, where she would be mentored by top producers from the BBC’s Natural History Unit. Ms Hales, a third year batchelor of journalism student at Monash Caulfield, will also now fulfil overseas ambitions with the trust grant. She would like to apply for a journalism unit that involves travelling to Cambodia to join a study tour with the Engineers Without Borders group. “This would allow me to gain international in-the-field experience using video equipment and expand my knowledge of cross-cultural reporting,” she said. “This would be invaluable for my career.” Ms Hales had a background in youth social work which sparked her interest in journalism. “I realised I wanted to be able to tell people’s stories and investigate issues that were impacting on the people around me and the global community,” she said.

We need manufacturing.“ Senator Kim Carr couldn’t have stated more clearly his support for the industry in Dandenong’s Drum Theatre. He was the keynote speaker at the Smart Manufacturing ’16 - Dandenong and South East Melbourne on Show symposia on Tuesday 17 May. More than 1500 people registered for the event, part of a wider showcase that surrounded Harmony Square. Students from schools across the region, businesspeople and the general public flocked in their hundreds to view displays from successful manufacturers. Stories from businesses and live crosses played on the Harmony Square big screen and trains, trams and buses blocked Walker Street. Mr Carr said manufacturing was “the key to a strong and advanced industrial economy“ and employed nearly 9000 Australians. He said Federal Government support for research and development, education and bolstering overseas competitiveness was crucial - particularly given the impending departure of key automotive companies from Australia. “The shutdown of the major car makers doesn’t mean the end of the industry,“ he said. “I’m confident there will be an automotive sector in Austraila after 2017.“ Walkinshaw Automotive’s Lisa Dwyer explained at the Clayton company’s

Maddel and Corex had on display a pop-up emergency shelter that goes from flat-packed to liveable in 15 minutes - created in Dandenong. “We’re developing a unit for a field hospital,“ Ian Harrison from Maddel said. “This is the first year we’ve had manufacturing capacity. “This is the year we’re really going to launch.“ Dandenong South’s Hilton Manufacturing put on a barbecue to raise cash for State Schools’ Relief Fund, which supplies school uniforms to underprivileged children. Managing director Todd Hartley said they had 1500 snags to cook - or one every nine seconds - and hoped to raise $1000. He also had traffic management screens on display and new LED outdoor entertainment systems. “We’ve been round for 35 years as a
subcontractor to businesses,“ Mr Hartley said. “This is our first time owning our own intellectual property. “It’s a change of direction for the business.“ IVECO brought a 1969 Acco truck alongside two new vehicles.
The Dandenong-based company sourced it from a farm shed in Dolby, Queensland, for Linfox for its 40th birthday celebrations. Linfox originally use it to deliver Carlton and United Breweries products. Ward Petherbridge from Waste Converters and Committee for Dandenong set up an interactive display, including painting and planting - all with recycled materials at the centre. The Dandenong South company is applying for Future Industries Fund cash for a $15-$20 million integrated resource recovery facility project. It will harvest recyclables and convert residual waste into fuel. Chromaflo Technologies invited guests to create their own paint colours. The Dandenong South manufacturer produces colouring for paint, plastics and more.

$100m traffic fines bill By GEORGIA WESTGARTH CASEY families are racking up huge bills on unpaid and accumulated transport fines but an overhaul of the entire State Government infringement system is set to bring much-needed clarity. In February the executive officer at Casey North Information and Support Service, Susan Magee, wrote to Attorney-General Martin Pakula advocating for a six-month, state-wide amnesty on administration fees attached to unpaid traffic fines. Ms Magee revealed how crippling the accumulated debt and fees were becoming for the thousands of Casey residents struggling to pay back fines. “We have Casey residents come in carrying shopping bags full of unopened fines and it’s affecting all aspects of their lives,” Ms Magee told Star News. In the letter, Ms Magee wrote: “Almost 30,000 Casey residents presently owe $102 million” in road fines, which amounts to “more than 10 per cent of the Casey population”. Mr Pakula met with Ms Magee in person last month to advise of the current system reform and his reluctance to consider an amnesty until the system was fully updated. “It was a positive meeting,” Ms Magee said. “The reforms will hopefully make it easier for the public to navigate - if they had done nothing to improve the frustrating system I would have pushed for an amnesty.” The State Government’s improved infringement system is set to become active by 2017 and will include the consolidation of fines. This will allow all infringements to be dealt with in one payment arrangement. Under the reformed system those in acute financial hardship will be able to pay for their fines through the Work and Development Permit scheme.

Among other amendments to the complicated system, Ms Magee said the format of correspondence would be reviewed. “It will take a more reader-friendly format that should be easier to understand,” she said.
In response to the scope of the growing debt in the south-east, the State Government’s Department of Justice and Regulation dished out $100,000 over two years, to the Peninsula Community Legal Centre (PCLC). The cash injection was to fund fine clinics to inform the public of their legal rights. PCLC CEO, Jackie Galloway said the clinics started in January and had
been “well utilised” so far. “The clinics will run over two years and are in response to the emerging legal need in the community,” she said. Training sessions for local community support workers have also started. Ms Galloway said one of the sessions has been booked out and another is planned. YOUNG people in the southeast who left school early are getting a leg-up into education. Chisholm Institute received $900,000 in the 2016-17 state budget to reach out to youths in Dandenong, Pakenham, Narre Warren and Frankston who have disconnected from formal education. The cash came from the State Government’s Reconnect Program which aims to prepare young people who left school early or the long-term unemployed for training and work. “Often young people lack the confidence and skills to get into formal training and this extra funding will make sure there is support in place so vulnerable young people can improve their lives,” Training and Skills Minister Steve Herbert said. Chisholm will employ outreach staff to work with other community groups, support services and local government. Students will have individual learning plans and achievement goals set and staff will use resources and a network of supports.

Picture: BASKETBALL AUSTRALIA “I love it, I reckon it’s really good - it’s great to live with these girls,” Shelley said. “It’s much harder back home to find a court, find a gym and the facilities here are amazing and probably what has made me improve - having these facilities around me to try and develop myself. “We’ve (the Sapphires) got a really strong team this year we’ve got a lot of big girls, great guards and a lot of the girls are up here at the AIS so we’ve all played together for a while and it’s good.” She’s also added plenty more senior basketball experience by the week - playing her role in the Canberra Capitals Academy SEABL women’s team. “I love SEABL - all the girls
are really young so we have a great advantage against the other teams as they’re a bit older,” Shelley said. “We’re new, athletic and quick ... I like that style of play. “Having the girls run up the floor and it makes you feel good when you’re playing against the older girls.” Shelley’s hectic schedule starts next week when the Sapphires tour China, before coming home and heading off for World Championships preparations in the Czech Republic. The world championships run from 22 June 22 to 2 July in Zaragoza, Spain. Australia has been drawn in Group B and will face France, China and Mexico in the pool stage.
Aura Vale to switch cricket camps? By RUSSELL BENNETT FERNTREE Gully District Cricket Association outfit Aura Vale has voted to make the switch to West Gippsland from season 2016/17 onwards. The Gazette understands the decision was made at a recent Lakers club meeting, with the overriding factor behind the decision being a financial one. The club doesn’t feel like it can compete in the cut-throat Ferntree Gully and District competition. In fact, some within the club fear that if the move doesn’t happen, the club itself will struggle to stay afloat. The move still has to be accepted by a league-wide vote at the West Gippsland Cricket As-
sociation annual general meeting on 30 May, but it is believed that is just a formality. But Aura Vale isn’t the only new club destined for West Gippsland, with another club’s switch from the Melbourne Champions Cricket League where Kalgidhar Cricket Club originated - also subject to approval. One Lakers official said 75 per cent of the club had to vote in favour of the move to the WGCA, which happened at the recent meeting. “We just can’t compete financially in the Ferntree Gully league,” he said. “The expenses are ridiculous.” The official said many of the club’s members live in ar-
eas such as Narre Warren and Berwick, meaning the travel involved in the WGCA is actually less than if the Lakers stayed in their current league. He said the club’s members were not only excited by the prospect of the move, but many would leave if it doesn’t go through. “We’d struggle to have a club,” he said. The Lakers have three senior teams, and three junior teams which are all merged with other clubs. The Gazette understands that their next vote will be on whether or not those junior sides will stay in the FTGDCA until the club is firmly established in West Gippsland.

MOVING to Canberra and living in the full-time basketball world has paid off for Pakenham’s Jaz Shelley. Shelley, who turned 16 this week, added another accolade to her impressive basketball resume with her selection in the 12-woman squad for the Australian Under 17 Sapphires. While she had a stop-start Vic Country campaign with injury, Shelley impressed through the pool stage of the Basketball Australia Under-17 Championships and earned her spot on the jet setting national junior team. To go from Pakenham - playing for Vic Country, Latrobe and Southern Peninsula - all the way to Canberra was a big enough shift. But getting into the Sapphires who will head to China, Czech Republic and finally Spain for the 2016 Under 17 Women’s FIBA World Championships in the next month or so is a lot for Shelley to take in. “It’s all kind of hit in the last few months - having gone from Vic Country and going to living in Canberra and living by myself, to being in the Australian team in such a short time,” Shelley said. “My personality, my attitude has changed since I’ve been up here as well - being more independent, living with the girls, having to do my own washing and to get myself ready. She puts a lot of her success down to a move to the Australian Institute of Sport (AIS) living in Canberra and relishing the rapid development the move up north has afforded her.
FOR more than half of their clash with Keysborough on Saturday night, it seemed the Pakenham Warriors Big V Basketball Division 2 women were set for something special - their first ever win. The contest at Cardinia Life began with them shooting the lights out from downtown as they took a 10-point lead into quarter-time - 21-11. But from there, the Cougars’ polish at both ends - as well as their superior fitness - had a huge impact. Pakenham led by six at halftime, 34-28, but the Cougars were on the charge and took the lead with a little over half the third quarter remaining. Jock’s boys do it By DAVID NAGEL SOUTH EAST FOOTBALL NETBALL LEAGUE AFL VICTORIA COMMUNITY CHAMPIONSHIP PREVIEW THE four-year unbeaten run of the South East Football Netball League will be challenged like never before when it takes on the Murray League in the AFL Victoria Community Championship clash at Mulwala on Saturday. Coached by interleague legend Michael ‘Jock’ Holland, the final squad of 23 will run onto Lonsdale Reserve minus some of the great players who have led the charge in recent years. SEFNL will be missing its two most capped players, Michael Collins and Marc Holt, who alongside Holland have engendered a spirit that is rare and unique in country football. But Holland is excited by a new group that sees only nine players return from last year’s victory over Sunraysia. “We’ve picked up a few injuries but every player in the final 23 thoroughly deserves their spot, they’re all in form and ready to play their best for the league,” Holland said. Holt was also named co-captain of this squad with Berwick’s Michael Harold, who Holland said had admirable qualities as a leader. “Obviously with Holty going down Micky becomes our captain and I couldn’t be happier with a bloke like him in the role,” he said. “He’s a fantastic leader but not just in a football sense, he’s a great leader of men as well. He’ll do a great job, and I think blokes like Brandon Osborne and Troy McDermott are ready to step up as well. To be honest, I expect all of our players to be leaders in some sort of capacity on the day.” SEFNL won’t be overly tall, with Beaconsfield star Scott Meyer set to carry the can in the ruck, with support coming from Narre Warren pair Jake Richardson and Jordyn Flannery. There is plenty of drive off half back, with Ash Smith and Luke BeeHugo, while Josh Tonna and Luke Walker are sure to mesmerise with their dangerous left boots. Clarke and Kearns will need support from Mark Weekes, and lively youngsters Jake Smith and Zac Roscoe if the Demons are to kick a winning score. Saturday’s clash starts at 1pm, preceded by an Under 18 clash between the two leagues at 10.30am.

ROUND 6 THE proof is in the pudding - Narre Warren is a genuine top-three contender after the Magpies scored their best win of the season over Cranbourne at Casey Fields. Trailing by 29 points at quarter time, the Magpies kicked 13 goals to six, including 6.7 to 1.2 in a wind-assisted second term, to claim a 16-point victory. The Magpies were led brilliantly by cocaptain’s Michael Collins and Dylan Quirk, while Marc Holt kicked four for the Eagles before injury hit in the second half. NARRE Warren premiership coach Jade Heinrich has achieved many things in the sport, but will enter a new frontier with Saturday’s interleague clash between SEFNL and Murray at Mulwala. Jade and her husband Greg will have the prestigious honour of coaching the South East Football Netball’s League’s first ever netball campaign after Sunraysia couldn’t muster a side for its trip to Casey Fields last year. Jade, who has played interleague for the Goulburn Valley and Yarra Valley in the past, said the pride of SEFNL rested nicely on her and Greg’s shoulders. “We’ve always been massive supporters of the concept, it’s such a great idea and a prestigious thing to represent your league,” Jade said. “We won’t be happy unless we come back with the win and we’re more than happy with the depth of the squad that’s been selected.” Narre Warren defenders Tracey Dell and Kara Hargrave will join forces with Pakenham dynamo Olivia Hunt as the stoppers, while Pakenham’s Megan Rosser, Beaconsfield’s Bianca Sanzaro and Narre Warren youngster Kealeigh Brown will share the pressure of shooting the SEFNL to a winning score. And with mid-courters like Leigh Taylor and
Erin Clark from Narre Warren, Kaela Hughes from Beaconsfield, and Pakenham superstar and interleague stalwart Meaghan Winter in the midcourt -there’ll be every opportunity to do so. The SEFNL 17 and Under team will take on the Murray League at 10.30am, with the seniors to follow at noon. Round 6 in SEFNL went pretty much according to script, with Beaconsfield’s five-goal victory over Pakenham the closest result of the day. Eagles’ coach Simon O’Shanassy shared the load giving 10 players at least half a game on the weekend in a game that was a make or break for his season. He has a very simple philosophy when it comes to his youngsters. “I like to win like the next person, but the young kids need the exposure,” O’Shanassy said. “But it’s not just us, Pakenham has the same intentions, an established club that is really trying to develop its youth and it was a great game on the weekend.” After an even start, Beacy blew the Lions away with an 11-6 second quarter to take a seven-goal lead into half time. Courtney Davey, Amanda McKenna and Ciara Nelson played second halves for the Eagles, while Samantha Jelo and Olivia Hunt worked their backsides off in the Lions in defence.
Tooradin has ended its two-game losing streak in emphatic style, riding a super-fast start to a 50-31 victory over Berwick at Westernport Oval. The Seagulls exploded out of the blocks, with Emma Iacovou (GA) and coach Kelly Haynes (GS) sharing the goal-scoring duties in a first quarter that saw the Seagulls dominate with 15 goals to four. Hampton Park used the mandatory seven players in its 51-40 triumph over ROC at Robert Booth Reserve, while some brilliant individual battles provided the highlights in Narre Warren’s 45-24 victory over Cranbourne at Casey Fields. Key match-ups included gun Cranbourne defender Tara Cecil (GK) taking on up-and-coming Magpie shooter Gabby Dwyer (GS), while the duel between Sharni Lambden (GD) and Tayla Shannon (GA) saw some brilliant netball played at times.
