Border pledged to a cure THE Border Ovarian Cancer Awareness Group (BOCAG) has pledged $33,000 to go towards funding research and trials to help find a blood test or cure for ovarian cancer. Support from businesses such as Elders Real Estate is detrimental to the charity organisation to help them deliver their commitment. Last week, Elders Real Estate presented BOCAG with their first cheque as part of its own pledge. For more, see page 5.

Crime-fighters freed By MONIQUE KUZEFF WODONGA’S frontline police officers are now able to better perform their duties to fight and prevent crime in the community after welcoming four police custody officers to the team on Monday. The new custody officers were stationed in Wodonga as a part of the State Government’s $148.6 million Police Custody Officer roll-out to assist police with management of persons in Victoria Police custody. Parliamentary Secretary for Justice Ben Carroll thanked the four new recruits to Wodonga and said they would be an integral part of the police force.
He said the role of custody officers would ensure regular police officers are out on the street doing what they are trained to do - to “fight and prevent crime. “It puts literally thousands and thousands of extra shifts out on the street, doing the work in community safety and working with the community to prevent crime, Mr Carroll said. “They (custody officers) manage people in police custody but they also assist the local police force with their time shifts, with management of prison staff, and with their resources. Wodonga police Senior Sergeant Chris Parr said the additional team members were a great contribution to
the local area. “It’s not only important for us but it’s important for the community, Sen Sgt Parr said. “It allows us to get that patrol unit straight back out on the road, straight back out to where it’s needed most, out on the frontline. Other responsibilities of custody officers include supervising felons in police stations, transporting people to and from court, police stations and other places, and carrying out all other prisoner management functions. The custody officers undertook an eight-week training program to be educated on responsibilities and a range of
other issues, Mr Carroll said. “It involved coming to terms with the human rights charter, dealing with people and knowing their rights when they first enter a police station and also skills in mediation and dispute resolution. “They also go through time management modules, managing staff, and they’ve also got to be quite mentally and physically fit. “They are often dealing with people affected by alcohol but are increasingly so crystal methamphetamine, so they need to be quick witted, diplomatic and very cool and calm in time of crisis, he said.
