In their memory By MONIQUE KUZEFF ALBURY’S iconic Monument Hill war memorial is on AlburyCity’s agenda to be beautified and upgraded, potentially with new lighting, seating, parking, planting and even a viewing platform. Going back to 1925, the monument was erected from the donations of Albury citizens in commemoration of those who died in service or killed in action during World War I. Since then, Monument Hill has stood as a place for people to gather on the dawn of Anzac centenary for a moving ceremony and an attraction for both locals and visitors. AlburyCity Mayor Henk Van de Ven said the war memorial was an important part of Albury and surrounding areas, and called for residents to have an input in the redevelopment master plan. “We want to develop a master plan for the long-term future of this particular precinct and want to make sure we get input from a lot of people about the future of this precinct, Cr Van de Ven said. “We want to be able to hold the Anzac dawn service here with some seating for people and other facilities such as loud speakers, microphones and those kinds of things. Other upgrade and development proposals from AlburyCity focus on areas of infrastructure, visitor attraction and public safety. Cr Van de Ven said AlburyCity Council had allocated a part of the budget that could accomplish both minor and major works on Monument Hill area including walking trails, accessibility, signature entry

and stone retaining walls. “We are trying to make sure it’s a user friendly place for people to visit because it is such an iconic space as far as Albury is concerned. “Once the master plan has been developed, minor works will be started straightaway as there’s already some money in the budget for that sort of stuff. A viewing platform was a particularly interesting concept to Cr Van de Ven who said he would personally like to be able to see the whole Albury district from Monument Hill. “If you look around here, it’s not very visible for parts of Albury, he said. “I’d like to see people be able to see the city from up here, because it’s one of the highest spots in Albury. Surrounded by significant and protected vegetation, Cr Van de Ven said the beautification of Monument Hill needed to be carefully considered. “If we do have a viewing platform up here, it is to be treated properly because it is an environmentally sensitive area. We would need to make sure we consider all of those issues as far as those redevelopment plans are concerned. “Whether that happens or not, we will wait and see what people come up with and what their thoughts are. Residents have until 13 May to have their say, and all feedback will be considered as part of the redevelopment of Monument Hill master plan.
