Vice Admiral Creswell lobbied for the creation of a completely Australian Navy, and in 1904 was appointed director of the Commonwealth Naval Forces, a role in which he helped shape Australia’s early navy. FOR the first time, two of Australia’s finest Anzacs are set to be recognised in their home town of Silvan. The names of Major William Charles Scurry and Vice Admiral Sir William Creswell feature on a plaque on the new Silvan War Memorial, which will be unveiled on Sunday 24 April. This will be the day before Anzac Day and ensures Silvan residents have a place of commemoration to honour their own piece of Anzac history. The opportunity is due to the work of the Rotary Club of Wandin, which

received funding from the state and federal governments to turn the project into a reality. Mount Evelyn RSL secretary and local historian Anthony McAleer said it was a chance not to be missed. “Silvan has never had a personal war memorial,� he said. “This creates a space where the community can come together in one place and pay their respects.� Mr McAleer said both Major Scurry and Vice Admiral Creswell were incredible characters. “Both settled in Silvan after the war, with Creswell building the prop-
