Arson hunt POLICE are on the hunt for arsonists after fire damaged a vacant Portarlington Road house just outside Drysdale in the early hours of 24 March. A passing motorist called triple-zero after spotting the fire at 12.55am. A total of six trucks from Drysdale, Ocean Grove, Wallington and Corio responded to the blaze, with firefighters preventing it from spreading to the house. Detective Senior Constable Paul Mitchell said the house had been unoccupied for 18 months and the power was disconnected. “We are certainly treating it as suspicious at this stage,” he said. Police are also reviewing CCTV footage from nearby properties. Drysdale Fire Brigade captain Brendan MacDonald said the fire started in the garage before spreading to the back of the house. It caused extensive damage to the garage, a verandah and a section of the house roof. CFA fire investigators arrived at the scene later in the morning to investigate. Police urge anyone with information to on the fire to call Geelong CIU on 5225 3100 or Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
Sharing the care By LUKE VOOGT CLIFTON Springs teenager Chelsea Novosalec is leading fund-raising efforts for classmate and friend Lachlan McKinnon, after he was hit by a car earlier this month. “I’ve known him since kindergarten,” said Chelsea, who recently visited Lachlan in hospital. “He’s a really good guy - to see him like that completely broke my heart.”
The fund-raising page raised $5000 in the first 48 hours. “It’s absolutely amazing to see that such a small community can come together to support Lachlan,” Chelsea said. The Bellarine Secondary College student started the page after “feeling useless” to help Lachlan in his plight. “I just wanted to support his family,” she said.
The page reached the $6000 mark on 24 March and Chelsea is hoping even more people will dig deep to support Lachlan. “He’s really bubbly - a bit shy at first - but once you get to know him he’s a unique character,” she said. Mother Michelle Novoselac was extremely proud of her 16-year-old daughter. “But it wasn’t a surprise to me,” she said.
“Chelsea has a very loving and caring nature.” Chelsea thanked everyone who donated or supported Lachlan, as well as The Alfred hospital, which she said had “done a great job”. Lachlan woke up from his induced coma two weeks ago. He sustained fractures and neck, as well as a shoulder injury from the incident. Chelsea said Lachlan’s father had
