I have business and governance skills and experience, but most importantly I am a good communicator and that is a necessity for the role.” She said it was fair to assume that residents of the region had lost faith in their council. “I believe that council has not really come to grips with amalgamation, and there are a variety of reasons for that,” she said. “As a result, the community has become disaffected. We can turn that around through good communication and a council that knows and understands it is part of that community, not separate from it. “A hands-on council, with more interaction between councillors and the community will make a big difference.” And so what is first for the new mayor elect when she is finally confirmed? “The first things for me are to ‘read in’ on some of the key decisions that have been made recently, get a good understanding of the Local Government Act and get a brief from the Queensland Treasury Corporation with regard to our debt management,” she said. “We as a council will consider the 2016/’17 Budget and identify key milestones that we want to achieve in the next one to four years.” Counting continues to determine the eight councillors with the final make up expected to be decided next week.

FORMER Australian Army officer Tracy Dobie is set to become the first female mayor of the amalgamated Southern Downs Council after polling almost double her nearest rival in Saturday’s council election. With receipt of the postal votes set to close on 29 March, Ms Dobie should be confirmed later this month ahead of the Statutory Meeting set down for early April. “It was quite moving on Saturday night, when my husband and I arrived at the Town Hall, to find my brother and his family waiting outside,” she said. “My brother was my scrutineer for the count, so for him to be waiting outside, meant that counting had finished. That, coupled with the big grins, told me that I had the lead. “We met up with my uncle Toby Eather and some friends inside the Town Hall and then went home. I’m not one for big celebrations.“ Ms Dobie comes to the role after a 22-year Australian Army career and subsequent experience in the rural, business and tourism sectors. Her experience includes demanding roles in strategic intelligence and as a commanding officer of the 1st Recruit Training Battalion at Kapooka. Ms Dobie managed a large staff in consulting and training roles in Australia and Asia and successfully managed multi-million dollar budgets in the private and public sectors producing results under strict financial constraints. Fire hits civic centre WORK on the new Stanthorpe Civic Centre floor has been suspended after fire gutted the facility’s kitchen and caused “significant damage” to the supper room on Friday night. Southern Downs Regional Council is playing a waiting game as investigations continue into the fire. Council Community Facilities manager Michael Bell said the alarm was raised at approximately 7pm on Friday. “By the time Queensland Fire and Emergency Services (QFES) was on site, the blaze was well underway,” he said. “Unfortunately the kitchen has been gutted, and there is significant damage to the supper room, including heat and water damage to the new timber flooring. “There appears to be some smoke damage to other parts of the civic centre, including the main auditorium. We’ll know more about the extent of the damage once the insurance assessors have undertaken their assessment. “It’s likely that parts of the new flooring in the main auditorium will be impacted. At this stage, the entire civic centre is out of action, as both the electricity and water supplies

have been switched off while the damage is assessed. “QFES and Queensland Police Services’ Scenes of Crime unit investigators attended the site over the weekend and have completed their inquiries. “Despite some community speculation, there is no evidence to suggest that the fire was caused by a lightning strike, or by arson. The indication is that the fire was an accident and council anticipates that this will be confirmed. “Council is working towards a solution, both for the short and the longer term, and will contact those hirers who have bookings over the next couple of weeks to offer alternatives, where an alternative may be available, for their events. “In regard to the floor replacement work that is being carried out in the civic centre, work has been suspended, but council is hopeful that work on the main auditorium floor may resume sometime in the next few weeks.” Anyone with questions about their Stanthorpe Civic Centre booking should contact Council’s Community Contact Centre on 1300 MY SDRC (1300 697 372).

Two men face charges A 23-YEAR-OLD man has been charged with a variety of offences following investigations into the break-in at Stanthorpe Jewellers recently. Stanthorpe police said two search warrants were executed on premises in Dalveen during the course of police investigations. They said as a result of the raids, police located a sum of money, drugs and electronic equipment. The man was charged with a variety of offences including burglary of premises in Short Street on 8 March, stealing from a motor vehicle that occurred in Farley Street on 16 March, possessing tainted property namely two laptop computers and a hard drive as well as possessing drugs. A second man, 39, was charged with possessing drug paraphernalia and a third, 52-year-old, was drug diverted for a variety of drug-related offences. Inquiries are still continuing in an endeavour to identify the offenders for the jewellery shop theft.

By TANIA PHILLIPS EXPERIENCED local tourism expert Marion Carrick has been appointed general manager for Destination Southern Downs, group chair Corinne Butler announced this week. After a two-month recruitment process, Ms Carrick was selected as GM from 33 applicants from across Queensland. Mrs Butler noted she was excited about the future of DSD with Ms Carrick at the helm. “Marion’s past positions on the DSD and Granite Belt Wine and Tourism boards provides her with unique knowledge of the industry and our operations, enabling her to hit the ground running and immediately implement our strategic plan,” she said. With a corporate background, followed by a number of years as a customer service consultant to national retailers, and later the development of an innovative, patented product sold by equestrian retailers worldwide under her belt, Ms Carrick is keen to use these skills for the betterment of the region. Ms Carrick will work three days a week, dividing her time between offices in Warwick and Stanthorpe, providing valuable strategic direction to the existing DSD team. Importantly, Ms Carrick is determined to ensure visitor needs are met and surpassed. Seven years as co-owner of Alure has provided Ms Carrick with an understanding of visitor needs and what they love about the region. “To be successful in tourism, we need to focus on what the visitor wants, and needs,” Ms Carrick said. To achieve this, delivering a new regional visitor guide and website; making the Visitor Information Centres ‘destinations’ and increasing income streams, and assisting core tourism events in continuing to grow will be her first priorities. Further enhancing relationships with core stakeholders such as council, Southern Queensland Country Tourism, Chamber of Commerce, Tourism and Events Queensland, and Wellcamp Airport will also be at the top of Ms Carrick's to-do list. “It’s important we grow stakeholder and com-

TWO people have been arrested on drug offences in the past week, according to Stanthorpe police. Police located a quantity of Cannabis within the premises in Severnlea early last week with a 25-year-old man subsequently charged with possessing dangerous drugs. On 18 March, police intercepted a vehicle on New England Highway Ballandean that resulted in a 52-year-old male offender being searched and two bags of white powder and a pipe used for smoking of dangerous drugs being located. The man was later charged with possessing drugs and a smoking utensil. Public nuisance charges laid A 22-year-old male tourist was charged with committing a public nuisance offence after witnesses observed him swearing loudly and kicking an ATM in Maryland Street, Stanthorpe, on 15 March. Police alleged the man had become frustrated with the machine after being unable to access money at the time.

At last week’s general council meeting, out-going mayor Peter Blundell proudly presented a staff donation of $215.50 to Granite Belt Support Services therapy and respite services manager Therese Crisp. “Granite Belt Support Services is the sixth local not for profit community organisation nominated by staff to receive donations under the staff ‘Casual for a Cause’ initiative. “Council staff dressed down and made donations throughout February for Granite Belt Support Services, and the donation of $215.50 brings the total staff donations made since the start of this initiative to $2081.75, an incredible show of support from coun-

cil staff for community organisations across the region. “Granite Belt Support Services does a tremendous job in improving the quality of life for people with disabilities and their families, and might I say that one of the many initiatives GBSS has undertaken was to provide disabled access to the pool in Stanthorpe. “It was a very successful project and the fundraising GBSS did for that was absolutely fantastic.” In response to the staff donation, the service’s Ms Crisp thanked staff for their generosity. “On behalf of Granite Belt Support Services, I’d really like to thank staff for this wonderful donation,” she said. “We have been supporting individuals with disabilities and their families in this community now for 25 years. “Between our respite and day services and our full complementary

DOMESTIC violence appears to be a concern to all who produce print media and TV, and forms the basis for the battle cry of gender equality. One of the proven sources of domestic violence, according to a very expensive review carried out by the former LNP Government, was the corrupted serving of Justice Examination Orders (JEOs.) These orders were to be removed or improved to prevent the known abuse of them. At the end of the term of the LNP Government, the review was placed into parliament by the Health Minister Mr Springborg, but was not passed into law by the current ALP Government. Fifteen months on these orders are still destroying lives having not been introduced by the ALP Government, in their altered form, to the best of this writer’s knowledge. Despite the higher cost I think it’s time to seriously consider an attendance vote for the next election in four years. A MAJOR upgrade to the Allora Community Hall is just weeks from starting after council secured additional funding for the work. Southern Downs Regional Council announced this week they had been successful in accessing further funding from the Queensland Government for the project. In September 2015, Southern Downs Regional Council received approval for funding of $92,000 under the Queensland Government’s 2015-’16 Local Government Grants and Subsidies Program (LGGSP) for much-needed improvements to two community and cultural facilities, including the Stanthorpe Civic Centre and Allora Community Hall. The Allora Community Hall improvement project includes

replacement of the roof and gables, along with exterior painting of the facility. Following receipt of tenders for the Allora Community Hall improvement project, a funding shortfall was identified, and council made a further application to the LGGSP. Deputy Premier and Minister for Infrastructure, Local Government and Planning Jackie Trad confirmed that additional funding of $33,922 had been approved. Southern Downs Mayor Peter Blundell welcomed the funding boost. “Council certainly appreciates the additional funding from the Queensland Government which has recognised the importance of this infrastructure improvement project, not

only to council, but to the Allora community and the broader community of the Southern Downs. Southern Downs Regional Council’s Community Facilities manager Michael Bell said with the extra funding now confirmed, plans were underway to award contracts for the work. The work will also help to make this facility safer and more accessible to the many local community groups and organisations that use it. The project was identified as a priority for the 2015/2016 financial year. The Allora Community Hall Improvement Project is a joint initiative of Southern Downs Regional Council and the Queensland Government.

“I’d like to thank Stanthorpe Hospital and staff for hosting this event, and I would also like to thank our Aboriginal elders who joined us.” DDHHS acting chief executive Dr Peter Gillies said closing the gap would continue to be a priority throughout the health service. “At a special closing the gap event at Mt Lofty Heights nursing home in Toowoomba last week I was joined by members of the DDHHS executive team to sign a pledge to continue working to improve the health outcomes for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples across the health service’s 20 public hospitals and six nursing homes,” Dr Gillies said. “While we have been working in a number of key areas such as reducing the impact of chronic disease, maternal and child health, public health and mental health, we acknowledge there is more work to be done. “Across our region there are more than 11,000 residents who identify as Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander. “I am pleased we will be collaborating more closely with the Aboriginal Medical Services to close the gap to improve the health and quality of life of local Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people. “We have made significant progress in training our staff in how to provide care in culturally appropriate and sensitive ways, with seven in 10 employees having completed our cultural practice program.”

STANTHORPE Hospital joined a number of facilities throughout the Darling Downs and Hospital and Health Service (DDHHS) to commemorate Close the Gap Day last week. Hospital director of Nursing Jan Faulconbridge described the Close the Gap Day morning tea as a great success. “This was the first time we’ve had a closing the gap event here at Stanthorpe Hospital, and it was a wonderful morning,” Ms Faulconbridge said. “We fully support initiatives that help to make a real difference to health outcomes for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people, and we were very happy to have representatives from Carbal Medical Centre and also people from the local Indigenous community joining us. “I’d like to particularly acknowledge Jo Bell for her tremendous efforts in organising this event.” Ms Bell, who is a midwife at Stanthorpe Hospital, said encouragement from DDHHS cultural practice co-ordinator Rica Lacey got the ball rolling. “A few weeks ago we were contacted by Rica who spoke to us about holding a closing the gap day event,” Ms Bell said. “The Stanthorpe community has more than 200 people who identify as Indigenous, so we thought it was important to host an event and show our support, particularly as this was the 10th anniversary of Closing the Gap day.” Joanne Lomas, Carbal Medical Centre District Care co-ordinator, travelled from Warwick to be a part of the event. “Closing the gap day is very signifi-

Caught out by obscure laws QUEENSLAND’S peak motoring body has warned drivers not to get complacent about the road rules as it released five of the more obscure laws Queenslanders have been fined for breaking. Data obtained by RACQ highlighted the number of motorists fined over these traffic infringements. RACQ spokesperson Lauren Ritchie said it was a timely reminder to motorists who mistakenly believed police didn’t monitor minor breaches of the law. “It’s of huge concern to see more than 130 people have been fined for using a mobile phone while riding a bicycle - this is unsafe and goes against all common sense,” Ms Ritchie said. “Another shocking find is motorists preventing emergency services from getting to their destination. “It’s a credit to police that they’re actively monitoring and enforcing these breaches.” Ms Ritchie said ignorance of the road rules was not a valid excuse. “The road rules are designed to keep all road users safe and if people begin to pick and choose the laws they follow, we’ll have chaos on the roads,” she said. “The legislation has likely changed slightly since most people sat their driving exam, so staying across new laws is vital.” The five random road rules that motorists were fined for breaking between January and October 2015 were: Using front or rear fog lights during clear weather - 344 fines. Cyclist using a mobile phone while riding - 136 people fined. Learner under the direction of a person not seated beside the driver - 97 fines. Failing to give way/moving into the path of emergency vehicles - 45 people fines. Driving with TV/display screen in view of the driver or likely to distract other drivers - 24 fines.

WE are in to round four the NRL, and I doubt there are many tipsters who are not pleased to see the back end of round three as results KO’d many. In fact, if you managed anywhere near a perfect score, please contact me immediately; I need to borrow your crystal ball. The results last weekend really show how close the NRL competition is shaping in 2016 and that again on any given day any team can cause an upset. The introduction of the NRL Bunker for the review system appears to be working much more efficiently and effectively than previous review systems, and recently appointed NRL chief Todd Greenberg must be breathing a sigh of relief that at least that is working well. He has certainly stepped into the role when much work needs to be done for rugby league to make up lost ground. With the salary cap issues swirling around the Parramatta Eels; news that former Cronulla players plan to sue over the supplements saga and dwindling participant and fan numbers, this is a man with a job on his hands. The former head of football however is well placed to deal with all of the issues. Greenberg acknowledges a priority is to get more people playing and watching the game for the code to reach its full potential. While more people watching the game means people at stadiums, in lounge room watching broadcasts and the emerging digital platforms. Let’s hope the key priority of grassroots football is not further overlooked. If the new boss can get more playing, more watching and grassroots strong- only then will the NRL and rugby league reach its full potential. - Casey NRL Round 4 Fingers crossed for a better round A REMINDER no Thursday footy this week. There are two games on Good Friday; two games on Saturday; on Easter Sunday it is the Dragons against the Panthers and on Easter Monday three games with the Warriors taking on the Knights at Mount Smart; the Tigers and Eels at ANZ and the Sharks and Storm at Shark Park. I am tipping the Bunnies to skip away with the Easter chocolates on Good Friday although Sam Burgess will be sidelined after a nasty injury scare last week. The Cowboys line-up that same 17 again this week in a grand final rematch. The Broncos played very un-Bronco like football in the second half last week, and I am looking for them to bounce back and atone for that loss and their GF heartbreak. The Raiders have been a revelation thus far this season, and look to strong for a vastly improved Titans. Manly cracked their duck last weekend. I cannot believe the Roosters can possibly continue to play as poorly as they have been, so I am looking for an Easter egg and a win from them on Saturday. The Panthers are certainly playing well enough to get the Easter chocolates against the Dragons on Sunday. I think it is time for a Warriors home win over the Knights who were much better last weekend. The Eels are to put a stop to the Tigers early season roars and the Sharks to nip the Storm early in the season. Good luck with those tips Casey’s Tips Rabbitohs; Broncos; Raiders; Roosters; Panthers; Warriors; Eels; Sharks VALLEYS PREMIERS AGAINST THE ODDS FOR the second week in succession, a cricket grand final saw the favourites defeated. Wheatvale went into the Warwick grand final as under dogs and came out winners and last weekend it was Valleys who turned the tables on RSL to take out the Stanthorpe Cricket grand final.

RSL had been competition frontrunners all season, but all honours belonged to Valleys when it came to the main event. Valleys were coming off the back of an outstanding win over Souths at their previous outing and their captain Damian Anderson was quietly confident they could reverse the 2014/2015 premiership result if his boys field and bowl well. They certainly did not disappoint. Under threatening skies, Valleys batted first and got away to a good start. With the score at 2/57, they looked in good shape to post a big total, but the RSL bowling attack has been outstanding all season and they were not going to be denied in the final. The fall of three quick wickets left the score at a precarious 5/77. Seasoned batsman Anthony Marino and Steve Martin steadied the innings with a well-constructed 50-run partnership and had Valleys back in the game. RSL bowlers Luke Brady (4/21) and Anthony DiBella (3/15) played their part in keeping the Valleys total in check. Valleys were eventually dismissed with one over left and RSL had a total of 157 to chase. Valleys bowling and fielding in their past few outings has been remarkable, and in the final they stood up when it counted. RSL’s Sam Dowie held his side’s innings together with a top score of 42, but a constant fall of wickets saw RSL struggling at 9/97. A defiant last wicket stand denied the Valleys bowlers for several overs, but they broke through to dismiss the final batsman with RSL all out for 118. It was Valleys first premiership for 14 years and there was plenty of celebrating for what was a special victory. Valleys bowler Steve Martin was named Player of the Final for his performance with the ball (4/22) and bat. It was a poignant moment when captain Damian Anderson accepted the premiership Shield. Anderson’s own performance has been inspirational this season after losing his wife Karen to cancer late last year. Following the win, he thanked his teammates and entire Stanthorpe cricket family for their support throughout a tough year. COUNTBACK AT THE ‘GARRA A COUNTBACK was necessary to determine the winner of the single stroke event played by members and guests at the Wallangarra Golf course on Saturday after Shane Purcel and Steven Hampstead finished equal on 64 nett. Purcel was eventually declared the winner and Hampstead was forced to settle for the runner’sup spot while Shane Williams was one shot back in third place. The pin shots were shared among the winners with Purcel nabbing three and 11 and Hampstead nine. This week we’ll be playing a single stableford. An early reminder that the Club Championships are not far away, 16, 17, 23 and 24 April will be the weekends for the event. GIVE A MALLET A GO MEMBERS of the Stanthorpe croquet club are very excited about their upcoming “come and try” afternoons. It will be a great opportunity to introduce some new faces to the various forms of Mallet Sports. On 16 April the game of gateball will be on display and on 17 April visitors will be able to try golf croquet. On both days, the action will get underway from 1.30pm. Last week the golf croquet group played triples. In the opening game, Teresa Pyne, Bill Golding and Val Fancourt combined to defeat Dianne Wren (playing two balls) and Elaine Brown. The final score a close 13- 11. Wren and Golding top scored in the game. Teresa Pyne played well, shooting a hoop in one. In game two, Bill Golding played two balls and with teammate Dianne Wren scored a 13-7 win over their opponents. Plenty of accolades this week for Bill Golding who had an exceptional day on the court. He was in both winning teams; top scored in both games played; shot a hoop in one in the first game and in the second game played two balls and scored the majority of his team’s points. Gateball is one of the other mallet games that will be showcased at the come-and-try days. It is a fast-paced, highly strategic game, and the team captain is responsible for each team’s tactics. Having a go at leading a team is valuable in helping players to understand strategies. On Friday, Les Williams led the White Team, while Joy Newman captained the Red team. In the first game, White won 13-9. The second game could not have been closer and finished in a nine-all draw. When a result could not be decided on a countback, a play-off or shoot-out determined the result. Players from both teams had one shot at the first gate. The White team managed to get all five balls through the gate, while the Red team after playing so well managed just two, handing White another win for the day. After the break, another two games were decided. Again both matches were close with

Dick Hilton and Norm Steele also had a good round and figured in the run-downs, Paul Armstrong had the best gross and David St John took the pin shot on the third. Angelo Maugeri collected the pro pin. Winners of the meat trays were Dale Gillam and Marg Locke. There will be no Sporters this Sunday- giving players plenty of time to hunt for their share of the Easter eggs. When Sporters returns on 3 April, a reminder that tee-off will be at noon for an afternoon game due to Pennants. CATCHING UP ON THE ACTION APPARENTLY the results fairly seems to have been a bit distracted recently, and there is a bit of a catch up to do on all the results and activities from the Inglewood Sporting Shooters. Looking back to Sunday 13 March, the club held rimfire events. Ray Dudgeon was the winner of the senior event out scoring Peter Solomon and Stephanie Dudgeon. There was success for another Dudgeon in the junior event with Will Dudgeon defeating Harry Schwencke. In the single action event on the same day, Tom Donald could not be bettered with a score of 24/24 to claim the win ahead of Iain Bowen (23/24) and Peter Solomon (16/24). Iain Bowen redeemed himself with a 24/24 on a second run. It was time for muzzle loading on 20 March, and the Dudgeons were at the forefront once again. With Ray taking out the event from Stephanie in second spot and Graham (Scruffy Morgan) filling out the placings. Iain Bowen had a win on the same day in the Action Pistol event defeating Peter Jones and Tristan Lane. Benchrest was also busy. There is a full weekend of shooting events scheduled this weekend commencing Saturday with Rimfire rifle. There will be a barbecue and camp over. Spotlight fox hunt Saturday evening. (BYO barbecue). In an action-packed weekend, there will also be pistol competitions. TIGERS TAKE HOME THE SILVERWARE THE Tenterfield Tigers showed plenty of courage to claim their first piece of silverware for 2016 rugby league season last weekend when they won a thrilling final in the BRL pre-season round robin competition played at Sullivan Oval. The recently reformed Inglewood Roosters

improved with every game they played during the afternoon and after earning their spot in the final took a 10-nil lead into the second half. The Roosters looked to have the final game in the bag despite a comeback from the Tigers in the second half. However, a try in the dying minutes of the game from Tigers Bailey Rhodes handed the Tenterfield side a 12-10 victory. The Roosters were the only team to score points against the Tigers throughout the round robin competition which threw up a mixed bag of results. In the opening game of the round robin, the Tigers defeated Wallangarra Rams 12-nil. Killarney then posted a 42-0 nil win over the Roosters. Wallangarra found some form to defeat Killarney 20-4 in an upset. The Tigers went on to win 20-nil over Inglewood before the Roosters turned the tables on Wallangarra with an 8-nil victory to book their place in the final against the Tigers. It is believed up to eight players have booked themselves an early trip to the judiciary after a sometimes spiteful game between the Tigers and Wallangarra. The BRL season proper commences on 2 April, and in a positive outcome for rugby league in the area, Stanthorpe and Texas will field a combined side in the 2016 season. The full season draw will be available shortly. BORDER BUSHRANGERS REP SIDE NAMED FOLLOWING the round robin on Saturday, the Border Bushrangers representative side to play in the South West trials in Miles on 9 April has been announced. Players from all BRL sides will be represented in the side which will be coached by Matt Gainey but following the round robin last weekend it comes as no surprise that the Tigers and Roosters have the bulk of the representative players. It is great to see some familiar names in the team along with some fresh faces. WATTLES OPEN WITH A WIN TRL Round Two saw Wattles open their season with a win over Oakey. Club journeyman Jason Wilmot and former club mate at the Gatton Hawks Dale Perkins have joined Wattles this season and both played a significant role in Wattles

30-20 win over the Bears. It is a new look Wattles side in 2016 with several other new faces and under the guidance of new coach Gary Lawrence. Wattles who had the first round bye looked a little rusty in the early stages, but as the game progressed their combinations improved. Wattles led the game 18-4 at the half time break and outlasted a brave second half fight back from the Bears. Both sides scored five tries, but the kicking game of Jason Wilmot who was outstanding in his first run for his new club was ultimately the difference. Wilmot a prolific goal kicker landed a perfect five from five for his new club; kicked a 40/20 and looked to guide his troops around the paddock well and earned the Hutchies Mug for Player of the Week. In good news for the club, there were no significant injuries to come out of the game. Despite the loss, the Oakey Bears showed they have improved in the off season and will be competitive in the 2016 TRL competition. Wattles next game is against arch rivals Gatton Hawks, who had a narrow round two win over Highfields, on Sunday 3 April with no TRL fixtures set down for the Easter weekend. In Reserve Grade, Oakey turned the tables winning a close game 24-22. It was a game where both teams went into the match without their regular halves and in the end the result could have gone either way. The Diehards went into the game without the Taylor brothers and Paul Cantwell and Jaime Abba were missing from the Cowboys line-up. Points were hard to come by, and both teams were made to work hard for every point scored.

Warwick were forced to defend their line for long periods - it zapped their energy and Dalby were able to capitalise.
